huge and historic weekend in the NFL with Andrew Luck retiring,
and of course we will get to all of that.
We will talk about that. We were Sean Jenny's former
NFL running back and New York Times bestselling author. We'll
have him on in less than thirty minutes. So with
that saying, let me bring in my man Rob. What's
happening brother? What's happening to mister Chris Brussar? How are you?
(02:01):
I am great? I am great. And you were out
there at Dodgers Stadium for the Yankees one of the
Yankees games, correct, Yeah, yesterday's game Sunday. Yeah. It was
what a series, what a scene out there too. It
was really incredible. And I gotta say this. You know
Dodger fans, Chris are huge, they love the Dodgers. Yeah,
(02:21):
but the Yankee fans were in full force at Dodgers Stadium.
It was incredible. So meaning what percentage of at chavaz
Ravine were Yankees fans? It might have been fifty fifty really, Yeah,
they took over almost and that ain't cool. No, it
ain't it. I mean it sounded it sounded weird cool.
(02:42):
But when the Yankees hit a couple of home runs,
it was loud for the Yankee Wow. So yeah, it
was incredible. We'll talk about that. But also, you know what,
around the country, you know, I did my vacation tour
and people stopped me and said how much they loved
the show. And I would say undisputed the Herd and
(03:05):
they would say, no, the odd couple. Hey, I'm serious.
It was. It was amazing how many people said that
they either downloaded our podcasts and listened every day, or
that they listened to the show. So it was great.
Well that's great to hear. And we are debuting on
in another city, Philadelphia. That's uh be Philadelphia, great sports town,
(03:30):
Fox Sports one h two point five FM and fourteen
eighty AM the Gambler in Philadelphia. So we are appreciate
you guys having us on and we will not disappoint.
So just tune in and call up. You know, Rob
and I do take calls eight seven seven ninety nine
on Fox if you ever want to weigh in. Plenty
of to talk about with Philadelphia sports. So we're excited
(03:52):
to be on in the City of Brotherly Love. I
love that name, the Gambler love it. Yeah, I like that.
I like that. So don't let the hit boat scare
you away. That'll be a composite of tracks, so it
should be a nice uh nice connection there. All right,
let's welcome into the Odd Couple crew, Chris. We wouldn't
(04:13):
be able to do this fine radio program without him.
Rob g of course, is our producer. USC. Chris is
in for Alex. It's good to say USC Chris because
today Chris Broussard was the first day of school at
USC with my class. I got about twenty some of
my kids, so that was cool. Enjoy the Yes, I
love it. I love every minute of them. Fight on,
(04:36):
no doubt. Ralph Irban is our update guy. He's at
the update desk. He'll keep us updated throughout the program.
For that, Ralph, thank you. And we haven't interned a
new intern, Sam. She goes to Ithaca College a softball player,
and we welcome her as well. So Christ all on
the other side of the glass. Let's kick some masks
(04:57):
on this magic city Monday, do it. And as I said,
the Big News of the weekend. I'm overshadowed everything. Andrew
Luck of the Indianapolis Colts, one of the best five
or six quarterbacks in the league, retires at age twenty nine.
The news breaks while he's on the sidelines and street
(05:18):
clothes talking with his teammates, laugh and joshing during an
exhibition game, and afterwards he confirmed the news broken by
Adam Schefter that he was indeed stepping down. Here he goes,
and it's certainly isn't how I envisioned this or planned this,
But I thought I'm gonna retire. This is not an
easy decision. Honestly, it's the hardest decision of my life.
(05:42):
But it is the right decision for me. I haven't
been able to live the life I want to live
taking the joy out of this game. And after twenty sixteen,
where I played in pain and was unable to regularly practice,
I made a vow to myself that I would not
go down that path again. I find myself in a
similar situation and the only way forward for me has
(06:03):
I removed myself from football in this cycle that I've
been in. Yeah, man, so twenty nine years old. It
was an absolute shocker. Some have called it the most
shocking retirement in if not NFL just NFL history, but
sports history. I don't know. I don't, I don't know
(06:25):
what I do with that. Yeah, I mean I was.
I was in Detroit when Barry, when Barry walked away.
And remember Barry wasn't hurt. Barry was the greatest running
one of the greatest running backs ever that he wasn't hurt.
He just decided he didn't want to play. Calvin Johnson
did it to the Lions as well. Chris not as
big as Barry, you know what I'm saying, even though
he was a great receiver, and look at the numbers.
(06:47):
The only reason why it's to me not bigger is
because this guy's been through the ringer. You know, he
just talked about it twenty sixteen. I couldn't practice. I
just I promised myself I wouldn't do this again. And
here he is. Chris can't get on the field. You know,
doesn't feel right for people who are knocking a guy.
(07:10):
The one thing I never knocked anybody. We don't Chris.
We don't feel anybody else's pain. I'm talking about the threshold.
You just don't know what's going on. Inside somebody else.
I will never tell somebody that they should be able
to play, or that there a week or soft or
whatever because they're not playing. This kind of be an
(07:30):
unbelievable decision for him to make to quit twenty nine
and with sixty million dollars on the table, seriously, and
and I mean Jim Hursey estimated he could have made
four hundred and fifty million more dollars. I don't know
about that, but well, think about it. You can easily
(07:51):
say he could have had ten more years. Right, So
let's say he would have made his next deal. Probably
would have. I mean, he's got sixty million, so what
do you have two years left on his deal. I
don't know if his next deal okay, at two years
left total of sixty million dollars, if he had stayed healthy,
(08:12):
rob his next deal was going to start above forty
million dollars a year. I think he's I think is
actually right. I think he's a little high because at
the end, they don't always pay you. I'm just saying,
you know what he could do the math. I just
think that there's a ton of money, regardless whether there's
three and the bottom line is this sixty million he
(08:35):
had on the table that he walked away. You don't
do that just on a whim. You It really must
be like I can't do this anymore. Yeah, I'm totally
with you in that when he and let's let's first
let me address the whether it's the most shocking retirement.
You make a great point about Barry Sanders when when
(08:56):
I first heard the news about luck, obviously I was
shocked like everybody else, but I did my first reaction
was the injury. Right, That was the first thought, Like,
I'm shocked, but I get it. I mean, he was hurt. Obviously,
this injury was worse than we expected, and he's been
hurt forever, right, right, So that to your point, that
(09:17):
does while still shocking. I mean Barry Sanders was I
mean two years earlier, he had rushed for two thousand yards, right,
and he wasn't hurt or anything. Right, he was year
before it was almost fifteen hundred yards, right, and he
was driving to training camp, Chris, He's halfway there, turns
around and says, I'm not doing this. Yeah, and quiz
the only reason people may not think about that as
(09:42):
a shocking and I agree with you, I mean, it
was stunning at the time, and for all the reasons
you just said, but the fact that the Lions were
so bad that they didn't win, just like we knew,
Luck was hurt. You know, you were in the true
at the time, so the feeling of just how bad
(10:04):
the Lions were, and you know there were there's talk
and maybe reports right that if they had traded him
into another team, he would have still played well. Barry, Yeah,
like he was just sick of the Lions and the losing.
But here's what I want to say, though, as we
move on on the Luck thing. As shocking as it was,
(10:25):
I really believe that this is like symbolic for the NFL.
I think it's bigger than just luck. And I think
when you talk about Chris, what guys do with their body,
whether or not they want to continue to play if
they decide, And obviously Luck twenty nine you would probably
(10:47):
say you want to play longer than that. But he
made a think eighty million dollars, And I think you're
gonna see more players get out sooner than later, just
from the standpoint that they want to They want to
they want to be okay when they finished playing football.
They want to play with their kids. They want to
have a healthy life. They don't want to be in pain.
(11:08):
I think this is the beginning of the new normal
for NFL players who just decide to get out too early, Chris,
rather than too late. If that's the case, I wouldn't
put this. I wouldn't say Luck is the beginning of that, you, Mike.
I wouldn't even say Gronk because Gronk's body be trading.
(11:30):
Luck is retiring because of his body is banged up.
He's not retiring because I want to be able to
play with my kids. Well, but that's part of it.
I mean, I mean, it's he it's four years. He
described it greatly. Injury pain rehab, injury pain rehab. If
he were healthy, he would not be retiring. But heis.
(11:55):
Somebody like that. I'll give you that if you think
that's gonna start a trend, but this is not. Every
player is not gonna be this beat up, you know what.
This is where I disagree with you. I think the
magnitude and him being that guy who stepped out and
was willing to leave money on the table is what
will make other football players think about it, even though
(12:17):
they might have We know why healthy. It doesn't matter.
I'm telling you, I think it does. I don't play.
I don't. I don't believe that because Chris he didn't
have to get it. He didn't have to quit though. Yeah,
but he I chalk that up to his integrity. He
didn't have to quit. He could have. He could have said,
I'm goin and work through and work through it and
(12:40):
just say if it takes me two years to get
back on the field, I'll get back on the field.
But I'm telling you, other guys are gonna look at
him and say that guy walked away and didn't decided
not to keep doing it. Now if whatever situation you're in,
and it might be, he's not gonna be totally like
his I just think there's a chance that this is
the new normal that players get out sooner than later. Well,
(13:03):
I disagree. I don't think it's related. I think this
guy is injured. That's what this is. And he's he's
been injured for the last three or four years. I
mean he played last year obviously, twenty seventeen, he missed
the entire year. Twenty sixteen he played in games but
couldn't practice. The year before that, he missed nine games,
(13:24):
like he I mean, the list of injuries that he
has it has had is ridiculous, right, But he also
had a great year with them last year they played
great and then he has suffers a calf injury in
April and it turns into an ankle injury six months
later he can't play. Like, I get it. I think
(13:44):
he was like, I'm sure he was like, once I
get over this, it's gonna be something else. So I
hear what you're saying, Rob. I mean, with CTE and
all the money that these guys are making, you're right,
you can get one or two big cons get out
and be able to get out. But I just don't
think this is related. If you want to say, like
I said, Patrick willis, no, I think it reason reason
(14:10):
because of his is his name. I think that that's
what people look at. And that's the whole part about
because if that wasn't the case and his name didn't matter,
it wouldn't be shocking. Chrise you just said, But everybody's
stirring because it's the injury, right, But everybody's still shocked
by it, even though this guy, you just read his
injury history, because she would be shot. They were telling
(14:32):
us it's just a calf injury, and then it's just
an ankle injury. I think that that's what it is.
I think that people players will look at this and
be like, I'm gonna I'm gonna play my own exit strategy,
just like Gronk decided, Okay, I'm out of here. I
could go, I could go do something. I'd never say
that if it were baseball. What are you talking about? You?
(14:52):
You know you mean it means not the case. Nobody
even brought up baseball. I don't know why. Why does
baseball come into every conference We're just talking about in
every conversation that, Yeah, whenever you whenever, whenever day, whenever
you're lost, whenever you're loss for an answer, come out
with I'm telling you what you have to do with injury.
I'm telling you it's gonna have an effect on other people.
(15:13):
That's my point. It is. Now we can agree to
Andrew Luck. There's I think there's a solid chance, solid
I'll say thirty five percent chance that he plays again.
I say, no, way, no, How does he ever play
an the NFL again? All Right? I don't see it
at all, but I could see him two three years
(15:36):
two years from now, his body feels better, he's healthy,
I could see it. I'm not saying he definitely will,
because it makes no sense to go back out there
and get it. Makes sense. He's twenty nine years old
to go back out there. He's been through all the
pain and all the stuff, and when the body starts,
I don't see it in his shoes. I would. I
would have it in the back of my mind. I
(15:57):
wouldn't once I quit, Certainly once I quit. And that's
what he did. He said, I can't do this anymore.
I'd be done. I'd be moving on. Barry Sanders never
came back, Calvin Johnson never came back, Jim Brown never
came back. I could go and came back. I'm talking
about football players came back the way healthy. That's what
(16:18):
That's My only point is that if he gets healthy,
he may Now he's a smart guy, graduated from Stanford
with an architectural design degree, so he's got a lot
of other options. Heck, some people who was it, Jerry
Jones said he could be president going to policies. I mean,
he's gonna have plenty of options. But I'm just saying
I wouldn't be surprised if a few years from now
(16:40):
he's healthy and he decides to come back. Well, early
retirement become the new normal, as Rob believes for NFL
players going forward, you're turning away in eight seven seven
ninety nine on Fox has a trend started with Andrew Luck.
We'll continue the conversation with you. Next, it's The Eye
Couple of Fox Sports Radio. Be sure to catch live
editions of The Odd Couple with Chris Brussard and Rob
(17:03):
Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern, four pm Pacific on

Magic City Monday. We brought to you by Truecar. When

Not available in all areas. All right, Rob, let's get
to the callers. Let's see if they're on board with
you saying this could be a trend of players getting
out early before their bodies are banged down. Eight seven
seven ninety nine on Fox eight seven seven, nine, ninety six,
sixty three sixty nine. All right, let's start with a
(17:45):
Rob in North Carolina. You're on the odd couple of
Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Rob, Hey, Chris, Rob first
and foremost love the show. You gotta cracked me off. Oh,
thank you, Bud, Thank you love it. Andrew's I don't
think he's starting to hold on. Turn your radio down, Rob,
I can hear it the background. Turn your radio down.
(18:06):
All right, thank you. I don't think Andrew Luck starting
a trend. I think he has just hurt. And the
point I also wanted to make was nobody's talking about
Andrew Luck's offensive line the first few years he was
in the NFL. While there, they started a rookie at
left tackle. They had some no names at the guard
(18:28):
and center position because the team was dismantled after you know,
paid Manny left. And Andrew Luck is a kind of player.
I mean, he was running for his wife, and he's
not a slider, and he was taking some massive kits
his first few years. And I just lay this at
the feat of Indianapolis Colts for not being able to
put a team around him. Can you imagine Andrew Luck
(18:49):
on the Dallas Cowboys were Tony Romo's offensive mind in
the last few years he was in the NFL. No, you,
he were absolutely right. We're gonna talk. There's so many
angles to hit with this story, but that's Ryan Ricks
in the former GM. You're absolutely right. Andrew Luck got
demolished his first few his first several years in the league.
I mean he had twenty sixteen. He got sacked forty
(19:12):
four times, you know. I mean, so this guy has
been beaten up throughout his career and that is rob
You gotta blame that on the Colts. I mean, as
bad as you feel for everybody involved, and you can
feel like, man, the Colts were just putting together a
good team around Luck. They bear some responsibility for this
because if you had protected him, he probably wouldn't be retiring. Yeah,
(19:36):
I mean, that's that's a lot of quarterbacks go through that.
When you're a bad team. You get a quarterback right
with a top pick, and usually because your team is bad,
and then if they don't go out and try to
put somebody to protect you early on, it could cost
you and you may never you may never reach your potential.
Chris because of it, right right, they only drafted three
(19:56):
offensive linemen in three years, and none of them are
playing in the league now. Exactly, Max and Georgia, you're
on the odd couple. Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Max? Hey,
what's up guys. Hope y'all had a good weekend. I
just wanted to say I feel for Andrew Luck. You know,
I'm not one of those who's gonna call him bash him,
but I feel bad for him because he came into
the league accepting some of the biggest shoes to fill
(20:18):
after Teyton Manning was shown the door. The guy's been
battling injuries. I feel like the injuries obviously took his soul.
You know, he didn't have a soul to play anymore,
and so you just see it in his eyes. He's
just not the same. But more than that, he's lucky
because he has that degree from Stanford. Now, a lot
of guys are gonna have an Ivy League degree in
architectural design to fall back on. Not saying he will,
(20:38):
but that's a big thing to fall back on, along
with the money. He's already I was gonna say, first
of all's family was already rich from everything I've read
he came from any situation and he made eighty million
dollars and culture letting him keep twenty five million, right,
So he's fine. I don't think money is an issue
when you're right, having a degree and being twenty nine
(20:59):
years old, you got the whole life ahead of you.
As you said, he came from money. He was different
than a lot of guys. He wasn't playing football as
in a way to get out, you know, off the
hood or an impoverished environment. For him, it was the
love of the game. And that's why I think it
was significant when he said it's the injuries took the
joy out of it, and once that was gone, there
(21:20):
was really no reason for him to play. And he
was like he had to make all this money because
he already had money. Yeah, and he also played. Don't
forget his senior year in college when most guys would
have already bounced right right, All right, Sean and Sacramento,
you're on the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Sean?
What's up? What's your big d what's up, big Chris Man? Hey,
this is why y'all the best show on the radio. Man,
(21:41):
y'all ain't just on here wax up poetically, y'all taking
the people VNTO. That's why, y'all the people's chance, man,
just to get out of the way. You know what,
we always wanted to hear from everybody, from the listeners
as well. No doubt we we vowed when we got
this radio show, right, Chris, that we wanted to hear
from everybody. Yep, that's right, that's right, And I appreciate him.
I love I love all the characters y'all have on
(22:01):
here for me to old boy from Kentucky. Man, y'all,
y'all just keep it moving, man, That's why I love it. Man.
But my point with this man is I think Rob
is actually like one hundred percent with this man. This
is a growing trend. Mitch Moreland, Patrick Willis, Rob Bronkowski.
You can say that it's because their bodies gave up
on them, but I'm looking at it like, these guys
are way more educated than some of the previous NFL
players because of the research, because of the science the
(22:23):
medicines out there. These guys are learning that they have
a career, they have lives after their football careers. And
I mean, you talk about some of the greats. Roger
Star about guys that can't even bud up their own
T shirts anymore. Man, The evidence is there, and they're
just trying to get out before before they end up
just like those greats. You know what I mean, get
out or get out too soon than too late. All right, John,
(22:44):
I don't disagree that it could start happening. I just
don't think Luck's an example of that. But you know
the money they're making, Rob, as you said, I mean,
it gives you that option, right. You know a generation ago,
you weren't making enough to just step away when you
felt like Chris, run real quick. The other part two
is when you think about it, how they don't have
(23:04):
the healthcare. They only get five years of healthcare right
after they retire. Five years Chris. Just imagine if you
get something really bad or something happens you can't afford it.
It's like you and I have talked about that. CBA, Yes,
CBA is they get on no doubt. How are the
Andrew lux Colts teammates handling his Southern retirement. Former NFL
(23:28):
running back Rashad Jenny's has the answer next, but first
be sure to catch live editions of The Odd Couple
with Chris Broussard and Rob Parker week days at seven
pm Eastern, four pm Pacific. If it is the d
Couple coming to you live from the Geico Fox Sports
Radio studios, it is easy to say fifteen percent or
more on your car insurance with Geico. Go to Geico
(23:49):
dot com or call eight hundred and nine four seven Auto.
The only horror part is figuring out which way is
easier as Rashad is he here yet? Okay? We will
will get Rashad Jenny's on in a few moments. But
I thought one of the callers, Robb, made a great
point about Ryan Grigson and that he was a gym
(24:10):
up until a couple of years ago, and they they
they just did not build wisely around Andrew Luck. And
I think what they're thinking was is that they could
get away with it because he was leading them the wins,
you know, even though they didn't put the right offensive
line in front of him, he was still leading them
the eleven victories, you know, the playoffs here and there,
(24:33):
and so they thought they could get away with it.
They drafted skilled players, but they didn't go ahead and
get that offensive line. And I know, they don't get
the glamour. Most people don't even know their names. They
don't make the most money, but they are important. That's it.
Because there's a lot of great skill position players. You know,
(24:53):
if you put a great offensive line in front of them,
they can do some damage. Right, you need those guys.
It's just no doubt. Without the guys up front, nothing's
going on. If I'm a quarterback, I gotta have the
best arm in the world, Chris. If I don't have
any time to throw the football arm on my back,
what in the world, how in the world can I
do anything? So so it is important. It's the first
(25:14):
thing you need to do to protect the quarterback, especially,
And it's a it's a shame that he was beat
up the way he was. And I totally but I
get it. I'm not one of these people bashing them.
It's so easy to tell somebody else what they should do.
I just I don't think we you know, you could
disagree with it or whatever. But but to bash a
(25:35):
guy who feels inside his body with what we can't feel,
you know what I mean to do? We just don't
know his threshold of pain. Some guys could could fight
through it, Chris, other guys can't, right, And I mean, look,
like you said, who knows. But I just think it
was as much frustration and exasperation as it was pain threshold,
(25:55):
you know, because it was like if it wasn't the shoulder,
then it was in Mike or my kidney, then it
was the calf, and now it's the ankle. And he
had to be thinking something else is gonna give, you know,
because a lot of times when something's bothering you, you
overcompensate somewhere else in your body, and I usually hurt
something else, right, right, So, and I'm with you, like, look,
(26:18):
even if this, let's say this had nothing to do
with injury, I still wouldn't rip him. Now, I would,
says I would if he just legit up and retired,
I would be like, dude, why now, Like you could
have done this in the summer, months ago, whatever. But
(26:40):
I was still wouldn't have ripped him because, as you said,
I mean, in some ways you can say he's got
some integrity, he hasn't bigger to your point, he could
have sat there and collected paychecks and just say I'm
not healthy to go out there and just keep getting
paid and be like, well, I'm not going out until
I feel good. If it's a month from now or
if it's two years from now. Yeah, right, because he's
(27:00):
getting paid regardless, no doubt, no doubt. So I I'm
with you. I don't like people criticizing him. It's his life,
it's his body. It's not about your fantasy team. It's
not it's not even about your team. Like if you're
just a fan and I hate to look the season
ticket holders, they're saying they want their their money back,
(27:20):
and I'm actually with them on that, Rob No, I
think that they're not against the fan. I agree with you.
I think the Coats if people really want to want
to cash back out and give that, I would. I
would honor them. Those people want out because I don't
think it's that big of a number. I think not many.
That's what I'm saying. Just give them their money back
and just let them know this. This is what I
(27:41):
would say, Chris, Okay, we're gonna give you the money back,
but you can't come back in Okay, so ever ever,
will never be able to Yep, I'm not. I'm not
kidding you that. If that's I would play that kind
of hardball. I'll give you your money back because you
understand why they would want it back, right, I underst
stand that, But I'm saying, if you want out, you
(28:03):
can't get back in you. I'm totally I'm totally giving
you your money back. But when we turn good or
when uh we make the playoffs or make a run,
do you know what I mean? Say, if they get
on a run and they play well. Remember they had
a good team last year. They played well, Chris, last
year they had Andrew Luck. No, I know that, but
I'm just saying, but they have a good team. It's
not like they'd from them. I don't think they'll win
(28:26):
they're now. I actually am starting to like, not starting.
I like Jacksonville. There, Houston's gonna be okay. I don't
think they're a contender for the super Bowl. You know,
they're a pretty good regular season team. But I like
Jacksonville with your boy Nick Foles. You yeah, the Jaguars
were your team last year. You're not feeling them. They
let me down last year defensively, and I'm not I'm
(28:47):
not sure where they are, Chris. They had a defense
two years ago that that could have won. I mean,
that's how if they had the right quarterback, you know,
in the right season, that's why they could they could
have won. I'm serious. I think Boardles deflated them last
year because they started this season off well do you
remember they started off great? Yea, and but you see
him fumbling the ball, throwing away interception. You know, I
(29:12):
just think it it just exactly. It just deflated them
to the point where they couldn't be as effective mentally.
And I actually think they'll be tough. There are a
lot of people that think the Colts still have a
chance to win that division. I think so. I don't
think that it's I don't think that it's totally and
I'm not saying that I'm pooh poohing Andrew Luck and
(29:32):
what he does. But I'm just saying they do have
some other weapons. Their team is not that bad as
what I'm saying. Yeah, they they had I mean with
him to think about a defense right was good last year.
Offensive line is good. Eric Ebron had an unbelievable season
right as tight at tight end the former Lion. Yeah,
they had some weapons. Remember they were four and twelve
(29:53):
two years ago before Luck. So but you know, we'll
see I mean a lot of people think they'll have
a good year, so we will see about that. But yeah,
I am. I am with you. I think look, Andrew
Luck is his life. He can do what he wants.
But on the fans, here's what I'd say. Here's what
I would do with the fans who want their money back.
(30:16):
I would not ban them for life. Now you can't
come back later this season and get seasons. Now, you
can't come back like that, just put. I would say,
we're giving one time refunds and next time, if you
come back next year, two years, three years from now
and you buy season tickets, you're locked in. You're locked
(30:37):
in for that year. We're not giving anymore. But I
would not ban them for life because I understand I
was expecting to see Andrew Luck one of the best
quarterbacks in the league. I was expecting us to be
super Bowl contenders. And now I could rightly say I
don't think we're gonna make the playoffs, so I don't
want to go. I don't think that should mean they
can't go to they can't get season tickets three years
(30:59):
from now. What if they get to a tackler viola,
You know what, what if mashed up his name, But
what if they get him in the draft. I figured
out who you were saying, right, I would have said
the same thing, Rob g Is that is that too hardcore?
If I was the owner and I said, I'll give
you your money back, but you can't ever come back
and get season tickets, You're gonna put you on a list.
(31:21):
You can buy tickets, Chris, you can't get season tickets ever. Again,
I don't think that would have the desired pr effect
you're looking for. If you end him giving a refund,
why you do it? So you say you do it.
Either you do it or you don't do it, but
you put a caveat like that. I think it's gonna backfire. Oh,
I'm just telling me. He comes off his means. I'm
(31:41):
telling you, like, if you're a cult fan, you gotta
be with us through thicking thing. You can't you can't pick.
And you think all those people in Cleveland and half
season tickets when Lebron was there are still season ticket holders.
I know they're not because my parents were season ticket
hold Oh your parents are front runners? Would tell them
when Lebron left, your parents are front runners? Whatever? What
(32:03):
a shocker. The Broussards or front runners, just like I
can't blame anybody. Look, it is what it is. Man.
That's terrible. One superstars because they attract fans. But that
don't mean I had to. I had tickets. I used
to go to games. I have season tickets. But when
the metal offer, I still went to the games. I
love the team. You said it, you didn't have season tickets.
(32:25):
Season tickets are expensive, man, I'm actually surprised as many
people buy him as they do because they're expensive. Yeah,
but football is a little different. Like your parents had.
Did they have a full season package? They had? I
think they did have the full believe, so they had
it his first stint. And then my dad was so
(32:46):
upset when he went to Miami. Did he burnsey front
of your head? They had a big fat and they
didn't burn the jersey, but they had a big fathead
in our sunroom of Lebron on the wall. He took
that down. Now, my mom had a picture with Lebron
because one when I was doing an interview with him,
I introduced him and she had a great picture with him,
(33:08):
and that was in there then, right, and my dad
was like, I'm taking that down when Lebron went to
my him and my mother was like, you, if you
take it down from the den, it's going in the bedroom.
So which which room you wanted in? So he stayed
in and then but um, but yeah, they I can't
(33:28):
blame the fans. Man, Look, you're not getting what you
paid for. I'm surprised at you, Rob you usually fan friendly,
I am. But if you want to come and go,
uh if I left, tackle gets hurt or something happens,
I just you know, for people who want them money back,
that's fine. I don't have a problem with that. But
you can't jump back on board. You can't jump back
(33:49):
on board when they're ain't no to start to see you.
Not this year, this year. Yeah, what's the difference if they,
like I said, in three years, they could have two
or they could have the next great young quarterback. It's
a whole different situation. Yeah, but what if he gets
hurt a getting then they're gonna ask for that money back?
Money back, that's it. I would say, one time, that's it,
(34:09):
you get one time. We can't make a habit of
this because it's not good for business. But under these circumstances,
we're giving one time refunds if you want them. So
that's how I would handle it. I'm surprised that you,
mister serial entrepreneur. I'm just in this case. Hey, sometimes
you gotta know how it works as sport. He cuts, Now,
(34:30):
that's right, we don't play you get you want a
refund on one bad haircut, you better not come to sport.
He cuts on seven All road again, rock All right,
this is gonna excite Rod Parker. Our next segment. It
is a dream scenario for Major League Baseball, will explain
next as the Eye Couple of Fox Sports Radio. Be
sure to catch live editions of The Odd Couple with

Rob Parker. I got some great news for you. There
is a quick and an easy way you can save money.
Switch the guy Coode. It only takes fifteen minutes to
see if you can say fifteen percent or more on
your car insurance. Go to Geico dot com and see
(35:11):
how much you can save. All right, let's turn to
the one thing there. Rob Parker loves more than Magic City.
On this city Monday. It's a nice little segue, right,
you like that? And you know what you know many
loosely's paper and pencils and rulers. I throw out when
I was in Atlanta, you know, for the let's started school,
(35:32):
wad school starting today? I had to get these girls
ready for school. Stop it all right, Rob Parker Yankees Dodgers.
I know you're excited. I'm a little bit excited. So
you know, as I said when we started the show,
I did go to the game, Chris. I actually got
off the plane from Vegas, got into Uber and went
(35:55):
straight to Dodger Stadium and I made it there in
the first inning. Well a, look, this is a this
could be a World Series preview, And you're right, and
people were excited, had a little buzz to it, and
the TV ratings were good. TV ratings were Rob g
what they matched the best of the season. That were
(36:17):
highest of this season, up fifty eight percent from this
time last year ago. So well, look, you got the
two teams with the best record in each league. I
know the Yankees were tied with the Ashows. You've got
obviously two historic franchises. You got the two teams that
met have met more than any other two teams in
the World Series. Right, eleven times they've played against each other.
(36:42):
And you've got some of the biggest names in baseball
and you got two home run I know, look, a
lot of teams hit homers now, but these are two
of the three best home run hitting teams in the league.
And Aaron Judge is back on fire. Just hit three
home runs in three games at Darkness Day, right, Oh, no,
no doubt about it. And uh, you know he's been
(37:03):
down and hurt the last couple of years, but it
looks like he's kind of back. And I agree with you.
The two biggest cities in the country, storied franchise as
we know, Babe Rute, Jackie Robinson, Right, can you You
can't get any bigger than that? Can you? You can't? Can't?
And I'm are you? So are you pulling for this?
I know you don't pull for teams, but for the story,
(37:23):
it would be a great story because they haven't met
in a long time, and I think it would be
I think it would be huge. And he and Houston
just won, right, So Houston won a World Series two
years ago. And that's not to say that they can't
win again, but they did win. Well, there's no doubt
Houston wouldn't be as they're a great team and they've
got a great people, and they got a chance they got.
(37:45):
You gotta give him a great chance against the Yankees
in the AL, but it wouldn't there's no doubt it
wouldn't be as exciting, not nationally Yankees Dodgers. As you said,
it doesn't get any bigger than that in baseball Now,
Boston LA last year was tremendous, right, but not as
big as as New York, as big as Yankees. But
(38:06):
I'll tell you what, if they meet, it's gonna be
interesting because I mean, the Dodgers, you'd rather be there
than not. But the last thing they want to do
is go to the World Series and lose again. They
don't want to because they and you prefer to rather lose,
you know earlier, but don't, right, you hate to go
there and lose again. And the Yankees feast on left
(38:31):
handed pitching, right, you don't want it to be. You
don't want it to be. Uh, the Buffalo Bills of baseball,
like and the Bills went four years in a row
and they didn't win. And you know, the Dodgers are
trying to get there for a third year in a row.
So Dodger fans would would take nothing less than a championship.
(38:53):
Not that the going to the World Series will not
move their need to let on. No, no, not after
what happened last year. And like you said, they're trying
to get the three in a row. I would give
the Yankees an adventure, but you know, it's baseball. Anything
can happen. Hitters go cold, pictures get hot, so we'll
see what happens. But yeah, it was a great weekend.
(39:14):
I'm glad you got out there to see it, and
you know, we'll see if it happens. All right, It's

ar sixty eight. Both great followers, so definitely goes there
and follow us at the bottom of the hour. A
longtime friend of both of ours, Robb, he's our colleague
here at FS one. Was the man Genius for a while, right,
Oh yeah, yeah, former NFL head. That's a cool nickname.
(40:18):
He set the world on fire right away, you know,
he definitely did. It's Eric Manginie, full of football knowledge
and wisdom, so it'll be great to talk to him
about Andrew Luck and plenty of other stuff going around
as we get ready for the NFL season. But first, Rob,
let's uh, it's the story of the day. It's been
the story of the weekend. Everybody's talking about it, so
(40:39):
we don't need to be any different. Let's continue this
Andrew Luck conversation, and Rob, you and I both agree. Look,
it's Andrew Luck's life, right. He can do whatever he wants,
even if he were healthy he didn't want to, that's
his business, right, totally totally as special when the guys
(41:00):
walking away from that kind of money, yes, like then
you really can't question him, you know what, I'm not
right because it's not we said it earlier. It would
be worse to stick around and just take the money
and not play that. He could have strung fans along.
He could have strung the organization along all season long.
He really could have, and he didn't do it. So
(41:22):
kudos to him. But somebody that's been getting the pass
because let's face Andrew Luck has taken a little bit
of heat. At least the fans in Indianapolis have taken
a lot of heat, and I believe deservedly. So you
know who hasn't taken much heat at least that I've seen.
Who's that Ryan Grigson. And more to the point, the
(41:46):
Indianapolis Colts franchise right their organization. Yes, Ryan Grigson was
the gem for the Colts up until a few years ago.
They got rid of him finally, but he did not
protect his investment. Rob, you and I are both sneaker heads.
When I get a pair of Jordan's, I take care
(42:08):
of them. I want you to know I was going
for ten days. I did not buy a pair of Jordans. Really.
I know you, boss, I know you bought a pair
of shoes. I bought one pair of sneakers, Rob, just no, no, no,
Gucci anything ros sneakers, just some workout sneakers, some nikes
all black. That costs forty dollars. That's all I want
on the trip. So you that's good. That's real good
(42:28):
for me that when I buy you a pair of
forty dollars. Jordan, No, no, no, no, I want the
real deal, Rob Ge, he owes me Jordan's suddenly he
should just get it out of the way. But anyway, Rob,
you know what I'm saying. When I get a new
pair of Jordan's, I don't go clean the yard in them, right,
I don't go play I don't go play basketball in them,
(42:50):
to be honest, even though they're basketball, they walk around
the right. I want them to sport. I take care
of them, clean them up if they get a little
nicked up. Why didn't you do it with a Drew luck, Ryan,
You did not put an offensive line in front of him.
Check out this these facts. From twenty twelve to twenty fifteen.
(43:12):
Ryan Grigson drafts three offensive linemen before the seventh round.
Hugh Thornton, cut before his rookie deal was over, never
played again. Jack Mohort, I don't even know if I
said it right. Ever heard of him. Jack Muhort reached
the end of his rookie deal never played again, and
(43:33):
Collid Holmes, cut before his rookie deal ended, never played again.
And they had an expensive defense during those years, but
their offense was the second least expensive in the league
in twenty fourteen and the fourth least expensive in twenty fifteen.
(43:53):
They did not protect him rob And again, I don't
you hate to blame any body in a situation like
this because it's unfortunate all around. But if the Indianapolis
Colts build properly around one of the greatest quarterback prodigies
we've seen prospects we've seen in the last twenty years,
(44:17):
and he would still be playing today and they'd have
a better chance to win a super Bowl. And when
you look at some of the other stuff where he's
been hit and sacked more than anybody during during his
span right in the NFL YEA also, what is it
twenty fifteen, two of their five guys on up front undrafted.
(44:39):
They're like, you know, walking off the street. Think about that,
when you have a quarterback of that caliber man, you
cannot be rolling the dice and hoping they're going to
protect him and I think that's where the Colts made
their made their mistake, and it took a toll. It
just took a toll on him, and I just it's
hard for me to knock him after going through what
(45:04):
he's been through and saying, I just I can't, I
can't do this anymore. No, I'm with you, I'm with you.
We saw it with David Carr. He was a nice
price to the older brother to Derek Carr. M yep,
really good prospect. I'm not saying he was Andrew Lucky wasn't,
but we never got to see what he could become.
But I ain't. Let's do this forward spin. And he
(45:26):
played much better this past weekend Kyler Murray. But Chris,
he might be in the same exact situation where he's
on such a bad team with such a bad offensive line.
Could they stump his growth? Could they beat him up enough?
You know what I mean, He's already a smaller stature,
and that already rob if he could not take the
(45:49):
type of pounding Andrew Lucky or Derek car Right, he
Andrew luck is a big guy. He's a big guy.
You can't just say I mean, obviously he's not as
mobile as Murray, but he was an athlete. Luck could run.
He could run by guys. He had a few moons,
you know, he was athletic. He could run the football.
So you can't just I mean, heck, look at Cam Newton.
(46:11):
It's kind of another one. I mean, he's obviously played
what eight years now, I mean Luck played seven, I believe,
And Newton is banged up and that offensive line hasn't
been good. That was one of the most disappointing things
about watching the Panthers last week, Rob when Cam got
hurt in that I believe it was a Thursday night game.
(46:34):
It was that. All I've been hearing in the off
season was that Carolina's offensive line had improved. And think
about this, and he gets he gets sacked two out
of three, two times in three series, and of course injured.
And the thing about it was only an ankle injury,
we believe, not too serious. But he's starting the year
(46:57):
already banged up. And think about how big and strong
he is. He's got a frail guy, Yep, yep, he's
so you're Kip. So that's that's what's scary. If I'm
Kyler Murray or his people or his family. Are they
gonna protect this guy and give him a chance to
succeed in the NFL, or you're gonna have another situation.
(47:18):
Uh of maybe a guy just uh not being able
to be protected early on and so far, and I
said he played a lot better. Uh yeah, but but
so far, the Cardinals look like a bad team. Would
you agree with that? Just because they look like they're
gonna be bad. It's gonna be bad. They are going
to be bad. I don't think they can protect him.
(47:40):
I mean, I don't hope he I'm not hoping he
gets hurt. I'm certainly not hoping he gets hurt, and
I'm not I don't want to go there and predict that.
But he's going to be running for his life. Oh,
no doubt. That's what it looked like when they played
the Raiders. The Raiders were at the house. So you remember,
and why wouldn't it Most other teams do that against them,
(48:00):
and so yeah it Kylie. You have to protect your investment.
And look, you can look at the NFL now, Rob
and see offensive linemen. That's what you have to get
for your offense. To me, that's your first order business.
We know quarterbacks the most important position. But after that,
(48:22):
as much glamorous the receivers and the running backs get
if you have to take care of that offensive line,
because there are a lot of dudes out here that
can run four or five four four four three forties.
They got moves, they got vision, and you put them
behind a great offensive line and they can do some damage.
(48:43):
And here's another thing that just came out breaking news.
The Patriots starting center is out Chris with blood clots,
so he's gonna miss Tim. What is that that might
leave Tom Brady open? Do you know what I mean?
Like that Tom Brady at forty two? You just can't
have those kind of holes or whatever. I don't know
who they have with their backup or what they'll do,
(49:05):
but I know what you know what they do in
New England, you know they do they read. I thought
you're gonna say, they're gonna they're gonna they're gonna tie
the two of the players together, like you know, tie
with some strings so that you can't get through them.
I'm not worried about the Patriots, I'll tell you that.
I'm just saying, but but that's yeah, that's a big offense.
(49:28):
That's a big spot, right you can't leave Tom Brady.
That's the hell hub of your line. Yea. And people
don't talk about the offensive line because they're nameless and faceless, right, Chris,
other than looking at a guy to restaurant and seeing
how big he is size wise, right, you don't know
who that is. People want. Football players walk around all
the time. You have no idea they play in the NFL,
(49:50):
not at all. Here's another angle to it, Rob, You know,
they're not letting you hit in practice anymore. For the
most part, the guys that are probably most impacted by
that are the offensive linemen. Like defensive lineman, defense is
easier to play the offense. Okay, offensive linemen have to
(50:14):
get in sync with one another, and not just against air,
they have to go against bodies. And I've talked to
Mark Schlayers about it, our colleague at FS one, who
was an offensive lineman, Super Bowl winning offensive lineman, and
he and others think the offensive line play really suffers
(50:38):
because they don't allow you the physical contact in practice
that they used to the skill position players. Obviously, you
gotta brace yourself and get ready to get you know,
be able to absorb hits and get used to that
but still for them it keeps you fresh, right, you know,
and for the lineman. And so watch that early in
the season, maybe the first month of the season, our
(51:00):
quarterbacks running for their lives and will they write will
they be at more at risk? Yeah, because these guys
aren't are ready. That guy's name is David Andrews. He
couldn't miss the whole season. He has blood clots chris
in his lungs. So that's very serious and of course
they have to monitor that and uh right, that's a
(51:21):
big blow. All right. Well, like we said, look, the
Indianapolis Colts are not blameless in this situation. Obviously, Ryan
Grigson has been gone. They've got a new GM, you
can't you know, and they actually put together an offensive
line now and they got it right now. But obviously
it's too late to save Andrew Luck in his career
(51:42):
for the time being. So what do you think how
much blame does the Colts front office, or at least
their previous front office deserve for all the injuries that
forced Andrew Luck into early retirement. It's your turning away
in eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox, It's the
I Couple Fox Sports RADI be sure to catch live

you have got a superstar on your roster. So when

you're ready to sell or even trading in your car,

All right, Rob, you and I I said, look, don't
forget about the Colts and how poorly they built around
their franchise quarterback Andrew Luck. And that has something to
(52:46):
do with why he stepped down over the weekend. All right,
eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox. Let's get to
the cars. All right, let's start with Marty in Kentucky.
You're on The Odd Couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's happening, Marty?
What's up? Christian? Rob By doing this Magic City Monday?
You know? And you know that would happen to see me,
(53:07):
Marty when I was in Atlanta, right, you know it
Oh yeah, I want to throw a shout out to
Sean and Sacramento. I heard him earlier. I appreciate that.
I enjoyed his taking as well, bringing folks together. I know. Yeah,
the couple. That's right, that's right, that's what it's all about. That.
I would one percent blame the coach, general management Brigson
(53:30):
and the ownership ursay. And you know at the time,
i USA had had the drugs situation, right and and
he was obviously you know, not taking the strange He
had his own issues, right right. Yeah, they didn't protect
their investment. They gave up the Peyton Manning retirement tour
to get this commodity, which was great, and they didn't
(53:52):
protect it. It's not it's just very you know, it
was poorly done and it's been done in the NFL
many times. Any guys never get hurt of you know,
you got the team couches that went to went to
Cleveland and other guys like that. A lot of people
don't even know. This guy was such a superstar. He
made a stamp even though he never had protection. When
(54:13):
he finally had a defense him in an old line,
it was too late, no doubt. That's how great. He
was rob Oh yeah, he was eleven and five his
first three years in the league, despite really not having
a line. And that's probably one reason they took him
for granted, absolutely because they were getting by Rice Marty appreciated.
How about Bruce in Atlanta, You're the odd couple of
(54:35):
Fox Sports Radio. What's up? Bruce? Hey, what's up? Guys?
Thanks for getting me on. I totally disagree with everyone
with what everybody has been saying all day. And I'm
gonna sum it up how Cameron said it and paid
in four. People get hit every day. Be Let me
let you know something when it comes to Andrew Luck,
this is all a result of the big money contracts
(54:58):
that have been going to quarterback and there's a little
privilege in this. He comes he comes from privilege. It
came a point where he's like, why do I have
to do this? There are people have been getting hit
in the NFL. You have gotten hit like him and
have had as many injuries as he has. Bruce, I
think you're wrong. This is not This is not a
(55:21):
guy who just got a bump on the head the
first day and say, oh, I don't want to play
football anymore. This guy's been playing football for a long time,
and go look at his uh his meta look at it.
Torn cartilage in two ribs, partially torn abdomen, lacerated kidney
that had him urinating blood, couldn't cussion, at least a
(55:44):
torn labor in his throwing shoulder, and now the mysterious
calf and ankle injury. Come. Don't make it like he's
a big baby and he's a privilege. He's been beat
to to blak Chris, He's been beat to bell right,
he has been said. A lot of these quarterbacks are
from it was time Brady from the hood, right, I mean,
come on, that happens. How about Patrick and North Carolina?
(56:07):
You on the couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up? Patrick? Hey,
what's going on? Fellas? Rod? Now, just just hold on
to yourself here, because I'm gonna say something. For the
first time and the years I've listened to you and Chris,
I have to agree with what Chris says for the
first time the first times. For the first time, I'm
wondering about you. Patrick's Patrick's text from from Rod. No,
(56:33):
he ain't get no text from not checking out. Guys,
Listen what Chris said. I believe one hundred percent. And
I agree with him one hundred percent. He Andrew looked
when he came into the Annapolis Colts, they did not
give him an offensive line to stay protected with. And
the boy, the man, and there's another boy. Let me
rephrase that. The man took a beating. He took a beating,
(56:54):
but yet he delivered what he had to do. He
had his game, he won games for his team, he
led his team. And yet year after year they're drafting
the six seventh round offensive lineman. Very seldom do they
develop into an offensive line that you won't. They should
have used their picks to get the offensive lineman early.
(57:16):
I mean, you look at the running backs that come
out late in the rounds, you know, and everything, and
they just did not protect him. And I agree with
what he did. It's like, you know, why should I
put my body through this any more? I don't agree
with it. And one more point, I do not like
what the Indianapolis Colt fans did by booing him for
the simple fact. Yes they were upset, but you need
(57:36):
to take in the fact listen to the facts before
you before you put the booze on the man. Look
what he did for your team while he was there.
He was a leader, He was a community leader. Me personally,
I am a Panthers fan, but I loved to watch
Andrew Luck play. But I hated. I hated to see
him run for his life. No, I get it, and Patrick,
we're going to talk about that in the next hour,
(57:57):
about the fans reaction and stuff. We're glad you mentioned that.
Thanks for the call. What about Jay in Detroit? You're
in the odd couple Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Jay,
Rob good to hear you again. Thank you, man. I
agree with the caller before this mask caller Andrew. Look
the way he played, he chose to take a lot
(58:18):
of hits. Held dude, big old dude. You can other
people have had a lot of physical punishment, and you,
as you play, you learn to avoid Jay. Jay. Look,
here's the physical quarterback. He's a big guy. There's no
doubt about. I wasn't afraid to run and and and
take some some punished. But Jay, don't don't pool pool
(58:42):
what he's been through. I'm sorry, anybody's gonna sit here
and tell that that he's uh, he's a privilege and
that's why he can't take the He's been through hell.
I just I'm not gonna buy into that. Thanks for
the call, appreciate it. Rob. In twenty sixteen, his pressure
ray when he was pressured was fort No. He forty
(59:04):
four percent of the time he dropped back. Think of that.
That's basically half of the throws you dropped back for.
You got pressure, right, and crazy people to try to
act like he hasn't been through anything. I think that's
misguided and I think that's wrong. All right, let's squeeze
in Mark from Sacramento. You're in the odd couple of
Fox Sports Radio. What's up? Mark? What's going on? Gentlemen?
(59:25):
How you what's tiping it? Man? Hey? Real quick? I
got a chance, lucky enough to see him and left
giving him Sacramento when you played it out here, And
I'm gonna tell you, man, they didn't put anybody with
the damn in front of that guy until last year.
He took more hits in every quarterback. And let's Scholard
is saying he chose to get it. Don't nobody choosing?
Thank you nobody, you guys right now, you right, thank you.
(59:51):
Dave got to look in the mirror. The Colts, they
get over the shock and and all that. And look
you you say that, right, you think they he might
have a decent season, Frank Wrych. I think is a
good coach. Yeah, he has been so far. Right, He's
worked with a lot of great quarterbacks, Peyton Manning, obviously,
luck Um, Philip Rivers. You know, so maybe he'll be
(01:00:12):
able to work with Jacoby Brissette. But they got to
look in the mirror and say some of this is
on us. There's just a but I totally agree. And
if they don't, they're going to ruin people coming there
down the road to say, I don't know if I
could trust that organization to protect me. Yeah, all right, Rob,
we've got our man in. Uh. He's so excited to
(01:00:34):
be on the Eye couple. He called in early, so
he must have plenty of us nuggets to drop for us.
It is none other than the man genius Eric Man.
What's happening? Man? What's up? He are you doing? Guys? Yeah,
I couldn't wait. I would have. Yeah, he thinks he's
gonna get on me, so that's why he couldn't wait. Up.
(01:00:55):
I'm sure he will. I'm sure he will. You heard us.
You probably caught the end of our conversation, we were saying, look,
the Indianapolis Colts have to look in the mirror and
we know Ryan Grigson is no longer the GM, but
they didn't protect their investment. You got this great prospect,
one of the best quarterback prospects we've seen, and they
(01:01:17):
don't put the offensive line in front of him, and
that's really a big part of why he retired this weekend.
What are your thoughts on that? Are we off base
or do you agree? Well, look, I have a couple
of uts of this. I always believe that they should
have kept Peyton manning for another year. You know, I
think that would have been the first thing I would
(01:01:38):
have done to letting Andrews sit behind Peyton and learned
behind Peyton, and he saw when end up having Payton
leaves and goes and wins the Super Bowl. So I
think that would have been the first thing I probably
would have done. Organizationally. The second thing and this is
an ongoing debate that we're gonna have and we always have,
and you're gonna see what Kyler Murray is. When you
(01:01:58):
play those young guys early, they don't always understand the
difference between you know, what's necessary, and what's just bravado.
So they take these hits to get three our gains
instead of getting rid of the ball. And it's a
learning curve that go through and sometimes that's a it's
it's worsened dramatically in some cases if the old line
(01:02:22):
isn't very good and their old line wasn't very good.
So it's it's a combination of a lot of things
that I think could have been done better in retrospect.
And you also got to look at the medical staff.
This is two different injuries now that were misdiagnosed basically,
I mean, well, well, I'm just saying you've got the
(01:02:42):
leg component and you've got the shoulder components in two
different seasons. They couldn't figure out what was really wrong
or how long it was. And look, I hate to
kill anybody without being there and knowing what's going on,
But when you have two major injuries to your star
player that aren't diagnosed and handled properly, you got to
(01:03:06):
take a step back and say, Okay, what can we
improve here, what can we do better so this never
happens again. Do you expect Chris thinks there's a chance
that he could come back and play a few years,
I don't believe it. I think when a guy quits
and he's in that situation, I think it takes so
much to be able to quit something you've done your
whole life and had success with. I don't think he's
(01:03:28):
going to play again. What about you? Where are you?
You know Ted mercher Brote a great coach that I
worked with in Baltimore. Each say never say never and
never say always. And I think that when you're in
a situation like Andrew's inn, where he's gone through such
a difficult process and he's really had to make a
(01:03:49):
decision that I'm sure he never intended to, never wanted to,
and was incredibly difficult. You know, it looks one way now,
but as you take a step back and have some time,
he's been playing football his whole life, right since he
was a really little boy. Maybe maybe a year out
where his body feels better and he looks at things
(01:04:11):
differently and he takes a step back and says, Okay,
I want to give this another shot. I don't think
that's out of the realm of possibility. However, I do
think he is a deeply thoughtful person. I don't think
that he operates impulsively, and this was an agonizing decision
that I'm sure it would be hard to go back
(01:04:32):
on it. Hey, Chris, let me jump in real quick. Eric,
I want to which one you think was bigger or
more shocking, Andrew lux retiring from the game or Barry Sanders,
And I own it. And the reason I say, I
think Barry Sanders because he wasn't injured or there's nothing
wrong with him. He just decided he didn't want to
(01:04:53):
play football. Which one Ranks hired to you was the
most shocking, you know, I remember when retired that was
that was really shocking at I think it's it's a
little bit different in the sense that, you know, Barry
was a great player on an organization that couldn't couldn't
capitalize on his greatness, right, And I'm sure that was
(01:05:16):
incredibly frustrating. Andrew Luck was a great player that was
driving the organization's greatness and really there and they were
in a position with a franchise quarterback, with a young team,
with lots of cap room, with a front office that
was dedicated to building for the draft. To be in
a position like to New England Patriots to compete for
(01:05:38):
a championship every year. So I'd say by virtue of
the position and by virtue of the impact of the position,
I'd have to go with Luck. We are joined by
former NFL head coach Eric Mangini right here on the
odd couple are Eric, How good do you think they're
going to be? As you said they were a lot
of people thought they might get to the super Bowl.
(01:06:00):
Obviously they've got some great players around Luck now, but
with Jacoby brissetting there now, I mean, are they still
a threat to win that division or and make the
playoffs and make a run or or you think that's
a tall order for him? Now? You know? I think
that division is interesting because everybody seems to be a
(01:06:21):
little bit stuck in neutral. Everybody seems to be trying
to get out of their own way to some degree,
and then also have some great things about their team.
I'd say Houston with Deshaun Watson and hopefully where he's
in is in his development, and the fact that they
had been healthier going into the preseason prior to injuries
(01:06:44):
to Lamar, I still like them a lot to win
the division. Where are you with Kim Newton? I mean,
or should we be concerned about him. I just can't
believe him. Where he was when he won the MVP,
put up that unbelievable season they would fit teen in
one and went to the super Bowl and I lost.
But it just seems like he's going the other way. It.
(01:07:05):
Will Cam Newton be that guy again or is there
a chance? Or have we seen the best of him?
That's that's such a loaded question now, Rob, because we
started with Andrew Luck, the question was should we be
concerned about Luck now that he hasn't shown up right? Yeah? Look,
I think anytime you have some consistent things happening, or
(01:07:30):
you know, consistent struggles, you know, at some point it
goes from being an aberration to being a pattern, and
you don't know quite when you when you jump the
shark there. Do I think he has the potential to
get back to that form. Yeah. One of the things
that really liked in listening to Cam this offseason I
watched some some videos about the way that he was
(01:07:52):
approaching training and the way he's approaching his nutrition and
studying and things like that. There seems to be a
level of of continuing maturity, which is to me a
big part of the battle. So do I think he
could get back to that. Yeah, I do. I do
think it's a struggle for you to change your throwing
(01:08:13):
motion at this point in your career because you've got
so much muscle memory, and once you add tension and
anxiety and the pressure of a game, you tending to
fault back to what you know. So if he can
stay along this path and and continue to develop a
throwing motion, there's a chance. It's just we haven't seen
(01:08:34):
it under pressure yet us whether he can maintain you know,
what he's trying to do. Eric. The three quarterbacks we've
mentioned recently, Cam Newton, Deshaun Watson obviously Andrew Luck, they've
all been hit a lot, you know, because of their
offensive lines. I've talked to some guys who have said,
(01:08:54):
of all the groups of players that suffer the most
from the new rule is where you can't really have
a lot of contact in practice. They think the offensive
linemen suffer the most and are the most behind, if
you will, when you start the regular season, because they
aren't able to hit like you used to be years ago,
(01:09:14):
and that stunts their development as far as getting ready
for the season. Is that fair? Is that true? Yeah,
there's a lot of truth to that. And the other
thing with offensive linement is there's a lot of development
that goes into them. And oftentimes old linemen come into
the league and they get on the practice squad and
they you know, some of the down the line guys
(01:09:36):
that end up being great players because of the work,
the consistent work that they're able to get into practice.
They become really good long term players and if not starters,
excellent backup. So when you do have those guys go down,
it's not such a huge drop off, but you don't
have that same opportunity to develop those guys to that level.
(01:09:58):
So it does become a realist you and um, it's
it's balancing protecting the players with also putting guys and
maybe artists for parents. He'd like him to be out there,
which then puts other players at risk. Right, Eric, we
got about thirty seconds here. I've been saying Tom Brady's
falling off, gonna fall off the cliff. I saw the
video eight years I saw the video on Instagram with
(01:10:20):
him and his daughter when he fell off the cliff
and took her with a What the year do you
expect from Tom Brady? Brady at forty two, especially after
horrendous Super Bowl he had what do you expect? Rob?
Rob at some point, at some point in this long pan, right,
You're gonna be right, you know so. I think if
(01:10:42):
you just keep picking him every year, probably in the
next three or four years, you're gonna be right the
whole season, you're gonna go I told you so, you already, Joe,
I beat my chest Eric. Great stuff is always We
always appreciate it. Are you going to be on with
(01:11:03):
us this year? Or what's the deal? Do we know
yet or no? You know, hopefully we'll see how the
schedule works out. But it'd be nice to you out there.
And you know, I don't know how I can you
want me out there, Rob, but no, we'll be I absolutely,
uh yeah, it'd be great. And then I'll come back
into you guys on the show sometimes. All right, sounds great?
Thanks many, all right? Yeah. Be sure to catch live
(01:11:25):
editions of The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob
Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific. You
tuned into The Eye Couple Chris and Rob on The
Magic City Monday, and as we do every Monday, we
start off the week with sources say check check check.
(01:11:50):
Sources say these two have been covering sports for nearly
three decades. Apiece, I will say this, let's put the
big Jay journalists to the test. It's sources say, that's right.
It His sources say, the our cup of Fox Sports raided.
We do every single Monday at eight forty five pm
Eastern where we put Chris and Rob's one hundred and
(01:12:11):
forty seven years of combined general experience to the test,
but dined out who's got the good sources? Did I
kick his butt last time? It was? It was? It was.
It was embarrassing for Chris Broussard. What is the tally?
Like seventy's You are on a little streak, so it's
about seventy three to twenty one or something like that. Man,
(01:12:33):
I'm on a hot streak. My cheese is hot, and
my cheese was hot. All right, guys, you know how
this game works. Let's get right to it. Topic number one,
Story number one, Rob Parker. My sources say that former
NFL running back Chris brown Man headlines this week after
he dug up a wooly mammoth skull in his backyard
(01:12:54):
when they were installing a pool. Robin. My source is good.
What's a wooly mammoth in his backyard? From Colorado? From Colorado?
He's a god though I still I still don't believe
that there was a wooly mammoth skull in his backyard.
I'm saying that is not true. Wow. Can you imagine that?
(01:13:16):
If that is true, I'm gonna go I'm gonna go true.
You sit on, Chris, are you kid? What are you watching?
The flint Stones? What are you talking? He's hold on,
it might be somebody else? Is it true? But it
was somebody nobody? I take you. Come on, Chris, Come on, Chris,
what are you thinking? Some day? You almost saying true? Rob,
(01:13:37):
I wasn't gonna say. First of all, the wool was
gone because he's been dead that long. So how did
you know it was a wooly mammoth? Okay forget okay,
all right, you see, just go ahead. I got a rally,
Rob Parker. My sources say that that former ESPN writer
who wrote the quote chink in the Armor headline about
(01:13:58):
Jeremy Lynn back in the day, he's resurfaced as a
Catholic priest. Rob My source is good. It's too detailed
for it not to be about him. But I don't know.
Can you just be a priest at any age? I
don't how does that work? I thought you have to
(01:14:18):
be celibate. Um, let me think. Give us an answer.
I'm gonna say, no, that's false, that's not true. I agree.
I mean he's older. It wasn't that longer. It's maybe
five years ago, as he had time. I guess he
could have went to seminary. You know what I'm gonna say. True,
just I got a rally, I got a rally. True.
(01:14:40):
Oh all right, we're tied. What that's interesting? Hey, he
could be a priest. They need some more Catholic priests out, dude,
they yeah, all right. You know it's interesting. I saw
a priest and nuns for the first eighteen years of
my life all the time. That's right, all the time,
because I went to Catholic s and now I hardly
(01:15:01):
ever seen him. And the most telling about the whole
thing when you talk about priests and nuns. Never mind,
I'm not going to say that. Thank you. I appreciate that. Rob,
we get to stay on the air. It is the
sources say, Rob Parker christ be sorry one to one
here in this game. My sources say that Jet safety
(01:15:21):
Jamal Adams says the team has a quote feeling drapport
in their meeting room, which includes punishment for players being
sensitive to criticism. Chris, my source is good, feelings report
a feeling drapport because you're you know, yeah, I'm gonna
say true. I like that too, well, you're always in
your feelings on the soft My goodness. Man up, there's
(01:15:44):
a there's a video out there, Dion Sanders talking about
coaches and players. Mind, I'll say true. Don't copy me.
I'm just getting the right hands, so I'm not copying
you copy all right. Story number four, we're all tied
up again. My sources safe. Former Lakers big Matt Aldon
Campbell announced over the weekend he was getting divorced for
(01:16:05):
the fourth time and he's only fifty one. Chris, my
source is good. I think that's false. Sounds like it
would be uh true, only because you said and he's
only fifty one. That that's the that's a little caveat
that you threw in there, because what would that have
to do with how many times you've been divorced. I'm
(01:16:27):
gonna say it's true. You sit on a throne. Rob,
you know what. I can't stand you? Hey, you usc Chris?
You know what to do? No? What do you know
what to do? Ain't over? Don't play that much times?
Rob time? That's who is Rob? G wasn't like twenty seconds?
No right here, No, just grow to its. Let the
(01:16:51):
music sue you. I'm gonna go back to the school
and change the grade I gave you. I can't believe
you anyway. It's the Couple, Baby, the champions here. Be
sure to catch live editions of The Odd Couple with
Chris Broussard and Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern
(01:17:13):
four pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio AB.
It is the I Couple. I am Chris, he is Rob.
We are coming to you live from the geicoed Fox
Sports Radio Studios. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent
or more on your car insurance. Visit Geico dot com
for a free rate quote. We've been talking a lot
(01:17:34):
of Andrew Luck in the Indianapolis Colts, and in about
thirty minutes, Stephen Holder, who covers the Colts for The Athletic,
will join us, so we will have a lot to
ask him, and I'm sure he'll have plenty of answers
for us, So definitely keep it locked for that Rob.
A big part of this story with Andrew Luck was
(01:17:58):
his last memory, Marie, was it Lucasfield at Lucasfield, Lucas Oil,
Lucas Oil at Lucas Oil Field will be of getting
booed here? It is this season win behind an excellent
defensive performance, a strong third quarter offensively from Tyler Bryant Company.
(01:18:20):
And now you're starting to hear the reaction to some
of the fans. It almost to me it sounds like
some of these fans are booing as Andrew Luck starts
to head back towards Philocera here. Yeah, you could definitely
hear the boost and until they walk into that man's
shoes and what he's been dealing with. He's done a
lot of great things here in Indianapolis. Obviously the playoffs
(01:18:42):
all right, And just to update you if you haven't,
you don't know the backstory. The news of Andrew Luck
retiring broke during the exhibition game. So he was on
the sidelines, you know, yucking it up with his team
in street clothes, a T shirt and shorts or something
like that, just talking with his teammates watching the game,
(01:19:05):
and Adam Schefter tweeted that Andrew Luck is going to retire.
So the fans knew before most of his teammates knew,
and other people in the organization. And so as Andrew
Luck is walking off the field, the fans already knew
he was done. And he I guess somebody told him,
(01:19:28):
maybe as he was walking off, or maybe even before that,
that the news is out. But that was kind of
the backstory. But Rob, I'm gonna say this, I still
don't like it. No excuses. I get that you were shocked.
I get that you feel like the season may be lost.
(01:19:50):
I get all that. I get that the season is
about to start in two weeks, three weeks, whatever it is.
But I still don't think there's any excuse to boo
Andrew Luck. And here's why you knew. This injury was
mysterious for lack of a better word, it was a
(01:20:11):
calf injury that he's suffered in March or April. It
was supposed to be no big deal, and yet he's
been able to practice three times since then, and then
they say, oh, you know what, now it's an ankle injury,
and again nobody expected this to cause him to retire.
(01:20:33):
But when I heard the news Rob that he had
indeed retired, my first thought wasn't he's a quitter. It
wasn't he's a chump. It wasn't how soft Andrew luck is.
It was Wow, that injury was worse than we thought.
(01:20:55):
And so that's the context. And I think if you
understand that he is retiring in large part, if not entirely,
because of the injury, then how could you boom? That's
my problem with it, Rob. I don't have a problem
with what the fans did. I'm actually with the fans
(01:21:17):
from this standpoint. Chris, two things I'll point out. Number one,
you're a media member who can take some time and
let it all you could. You could take an honest
look at it for what it is. Fans right. The
word fan is derived from the word fanatic, which means
you care about something. You live, you breathe, you eat
(01:21:39):
the whole thing. That's why you're a fan and why
you buy the paraphernalia, why you pay money to go
to the games, and you invest your time, your money,
and your energy into these things that most people be
like they don't really matter. It's just a game. No,
it does matter. You do care. And here's the problem.
(01:21:59):
They didn't know really what was going on. You know this, Chris,
The worst place to find out something is where in
the stands. You don't know. Why would you boo though,
because it's not booing him. The person is booing that
this is our season just got wrecked. What how you
saying they're not going the person they're not. They're booing,
(01:22:20):
boing the scenario that they're not the scenario the game.
They booed him as he was walking It was him. No,
but they're booing that he our chances for a super
Bowl is guard. They can't blame any No, they did
not have to wait till he was walking out, Christian.
Don't you know what? You don't start booing when when
(01:22:43):
everybody's on the sideline, when you get a clear view
of him, when he starts to walk and then you
realize the news that that he's not gonna be playing
and he's retiring. That's a that's a normal reaction to
be upset. How do people deal whenever they're upset? What
do you do? Chris? You you applaud them? Normal? It
(01:23:03):
is normal. Who cares about the Super Bowl? Who cares
about your Fanly? Fans care about guys. That's why they're fans. Yes,
it does. It gives you the right. It gives you
the right to be an idiot, Chris. It gives you.
That's why you go to games and cheer people the
(01:23:24):
same way you have games has to be crazy. You're
you're you're you're saying a fan is short for fanatics.
So these people are nuts. No, they're human beings. They care, engineers,
their accountants, they their teachers know, they're custodians. They're regular
people when they make new decisions, not when they giving
(01:23:46):
them no, not when they go and spend their money
and buy the paraphernalia, and and they lose sleep when
their team loses, right, and then you're foric when their
team wins. When the Cubs won the world. You know
what people said, Chris, I can die in peace. Now,
how could a ball gave me that much? To you?
A world said I can die in peace. That's all
(01:24:09):
people like this is a small number of are crazy.
I'm telling doing so when so when the team wins,
I have they done this in Detroit? When a team
wins the championship and they burn up the city and
burn up cars. Oh, they're fanatics, that's why they do it. No,
they're crazy. No sleep, but it is that all right? No,
(01:24:30):
they were trying to stay warm. It was a cold
night in Detroit. Don't don't get Kawhi up in this. Kawhi. No,
that wasn't funny, Rob. You know what I said. You
are trying to say, because they're fanatical, they can do crazy,
stupid stuff. No, they're rational human beings. And like I said,
(01:24:51):
we know the guy has hurt. I'll give it to you, Rob.
If he was healthy, if this was, say, you know
who's healthy, Carson wins or you know, Patrick Mahomes or
Aaron Rodgers or somebody that's got no injury issues right now,
I would get it. But we knew he was injured.
We knew the injury was strange. We knew the coach
(01:25:14):
didn't seem to know what the heck was going on.
But nobody knew that he was going to quit. We
didn't know he was gonna retire, but we knew it
was worse than we thought. And you just said the
word you could you could dress it up anywhere you want.
He quit he didn't quit. He quit quitting there, No,
he quit, he retired. No, he quit. How he quit.
(01:25:35):
He decided that he didn't want to play anymore. He quit.
Why but Chris, he quit? No, it's not. Yes, he quit.
There's a difference in just quitting on your teammates. And
know he didn't quit on his teammates. His body has
betrayed him. He quit. He said he didn't want to
play anymore. That's quitting. I don't know what. I'm not
(01:25:57):
talking about the reason why quit, but the reason it
is important. He quit though a Quinn. He's not playing,
that's what That's what quitting is. Well, I look at
quitting as a negative, and I don't look at what
he did as a negative. Do you maybe, if you
use do you think quinning is not a negative in
some case? No? I don't. People quit every day. They quit, Okay,
(01:26:17):
So that's fine as long as you're not saying it's
a negative. No, because there's nothing negative about what he did.
I told you I'm on board with what he did,
but I also shouldn't be booed for what he did.
Fans react because the fans are wrong. No, they're not.
They are wrong. They care. That's why everybody care in
indian I don't care if they care. It doesn't give
(01:26:39):
you a right to boo a human being something like that. Yeah,
you look at boo him if he makes a bad
player because you're upset about what It doesn't give you
that bad What what what reaction would you do, Chris?
What would you are? You just find you could honestly
shitter for what that he's leading to be for being
(01:27:00):
in a great player when he played and forgiving it
his all. No, he was a twenty nine year old
guy who wants nothing more than to play football. His
body can't be training him year after year, month after month.
We'll cheer him at the height, We'll cheer him at
the Super Bowl parade. Oh wait a minute, didn't have one.
So there's just no reason. What are you cheering about?
(01:27:21):
If you want? If they see him, I bet you
if they see him in Indianapolis, like if they have
some type of e vitnan he's there, what are they
gonna do? They're gonna cheer him. But that's after the fact,
after everything. But when you know when your law motion,
Chris is this stop it. I just paid what I
just paid three thousand dollars for season tickets, and this
dude just quit. Oh my god, what am I gonna do?
(01:27:44):
Injury doesn't play in the effect. No, you don't even
think about that. He stopped it. That's the first thing
they knew he was in jured. Doesn't matter. You can't
tell me that. What was your first thought when he
when you heard he retired, What was your first thought? No,
I realized he was heard. I god, okay, thank you.
But the same reports than everybody else. But if they're
(01:28:04):
that serious, if they're that fanatical, they're reading the reports,
they know he was injured. No, but there, but their
their emotion takes over because stop, No, they just saw
everything that just went before them. They had a chance
to win a Super Bowl is taken away from them.
Their tickets are now in their pockets, are worthless, and
(01:28:25):
they go, I just got a ninety five dollars Andrew
luck jersey. What I'm wanted to do with this? Now?
They something that's all that people don't wear Michael Jordan,
Peyton Manning jerseys. One they were stop. You don't wear
what losing jersey unless you're a Raider's fan. Gary Payte
stopping I'd love a Gary Payton signics Jersey. Better yet
(01:28:50):
a Sean kept rain Man Signic Jersey. Anybody out there
feel free to send Bruce wall is that looking at it?
I'm serious. Don't rob you're, you're, you're, you're making it excuses.
But these are rational human beings. They didn't just lose,
you know, all control. Oh my gosh, Oh my gosh.
We got a booing this guy, you know what he's
(01:29:11):
going through. And I don't even want to hear people
to talk about. I don't like the timing. He could
have told him this early. He tried to give it
all he could. He tried to wait till the last
minute to see if he could indeed play. And that's
the other part, the timing. The seasons about the start,
and you lose your star franchise quarterback. What other reaction
(01:29:33):
would you have other than the boot to say no.
They weren't saying boot. They were saying no. They were
rob Well, no, who do you know in Indianapolis? Who
are you protecting in indian I thought about protecting somebo booing.
They weren't. I'm in the situation. They were booing Andrew Love,
I'm somebody's in the witness protection. No, I don't know.
(01:29:54):
I'm shocked at you. You're the hit boot. I'm stunned.
You must they got soft on your trip or something
my national tool. What happened? No, trust me, I was
not soft. There was a great trip a woman. All right?
What say you guys? Eight seven seven ninety nine on
(01:30:16):
Fox Robed you you with me? No? No, he's not
with you. No, I was with you to that very
last comment that you made about your trip past that.
I was glad Chris we sorry didn't catch it because
he would have to it. I caught it. I just
chose to be the bigger man. Tuesday show is the
Eye Couple with and Friends. That's what it's gonna be. Alright,
(01:30:39):

True Cash offer not available in all areas. All right, Rob,
Let's see who the callers are with eight seven seven
ninety nine on Fox. You're gonna get your feelings the
boom Andrew Luck or not. Let's see what they say.
Let's bring it. Let's start with Levia in Virginia. You're
in the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up? Levia?
(01:31:44):
I can tell Robert first of all, I love the show.
Thank you for an amazing job. Keep doing what you're doing.
Thanks go Rob. First of all, because the fans felt blindsided. Man,
their expectations weren't met. And the red then why they
weren't met? Because they expected Andrew Luck to play. They
did not think he was gonna miss the season. Now
(01:32:07):
did they know he was heard he had injuries yet,
but they still expected him to play. Crib and they
felt blind Yes, no, I don't care about what do
you expect them to do? It? Why I expect them
that man, do what Chris, that just found out they
lost their starting quarterback. In the season's over. You're super Bowl,
(01:32:29):
your fantasy team, your season tickets don't matter when it's
a human being involved. That's this dude didn't just up
and quit. This dude is injured. That's what this is.
That doesn't give him an excuse. Just because you blindsided
doesn't give you an excuse to act like an idiot.
And they recognize it now because they know they acted
(01:32:50):
like idiots. LEVI, finish your thought. They were set up.
He was gonna have a process. Somebody leaked the new
who so they felt blindsided. You can't follow them for that.
I can follow them, no doubt, Levi. You know they
were wrong. Great call. Call the couple all the time.
Leave I appreciate. Yeah, you know you've been knowing right
for like thirty years that your boy from Sport he
(01:33:11):
cuts in Detroit seven mile row. Look at christ You
gotta right something? No, uh, Nate in indeed he was
at the game. You're on the odd couple of Fox
Sports Radio. What's up, Nate, Rob, Chris, what's up? Fellers?
What's up? Man? Okay, First of all. What you said
last segment about the tickets is you don't like them
(01:33:32):
when they're losing, you cannot like them when they're winning.
That's my first point. But I'm a season ticket holder
Road twenty two orner end zone with the coach going
to the locker room. So when they're going into the
locker room, the whole game, okay, is outnumbered. The bearers
were outnumbered the coach Sans two to one at this game.
It was ridiculous how many Bears fans was there the
(01:33:55):
whole game. They were booing everybody from the start, regardless salty,
the still salty from the Super Bowl game back in
two thousand and six, So there were there was three
quarters where you're booing there. So you think the bos
were Bears fans, Well, I was there and then look
and did you boo that did that? Hello? I had
(01:34:16):
too many tears to boo Chris to be ho. There
you go. I get so most of most of the
few Colts fans that were booing are the ones that
got cheap preseason tickets to go to the game. That
was up in the nosebleeds. As everybody started leaving, they
started moving down at the start of the game. Everybody
that was down their booing was not there at the
(01:34:39):
start of the game. They were the ones that got
cheap seats and wanted to come down, and they're the
ones that was booing. It can't be all on the
coach time, all day long. Oldbody's bashing the coach fans.
I get it, Nate, and we appreciate you that look
as you lucks a good guy. He didn't deserve that.
(01:35:00):
I get it. But I understand also too, how people
can be upset when you're blindsided. You didn't know what
was going on, and all of a sudden, your whole
season is wreck your franchise quarterback who had an unbelievable
year last year, and then all of a sudden he's done.
What he mean he quit? Nate was crying. I understand
and cried. I mean, come on, but he was crying
(01:35:23):
because he had some black pepper I think, or something.
I haven't had something doing at something else. Mike and
san Antonio, you're in the odd couple. How you doing? Hey, Rob,
you know what they did? They he came Wait a minute,
hold on, I'm glad you said that, Mike. When he
came back the first time, in public in Detroit. He
(01:35:45):
went to a Pistons game, him and his little son.
They put on the big screen and they booed the
hell out of Barry Sanders. Well that wasn't the football fans, no,
but it was Detroit sports fans they booed. That's a
little difference. They were, man, Barry Sanders didn't quit because
of or retire because of injuries. Saying, Chris, you said
it quit he quit. He did quit. That's a difference
(01:36:08):
if you if you right say, and I'm not mad
at Sanders, but but yeah, he just stopped playing. But right,
Eddie quit that he quit. He was hurt. Why I
keep playing? I understand my ill rob If if if
um Luck had just decided I'm done, I'm healthy, I
(01:36:29):
could play. It's two weeks before the season and I'm
abandon in my team. That's one thing I get if
you boot him for that. But he's injured and he's
been going through injuries for the past four years. All right,
Jason in North Carolina, you're on the odd couple of
Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Jason? What's up? Yeah, thanks
for taking my call. I've got an analogy for you here.
(01:36:50):
This is my Andrew Luck analogy. Okay, he's bretty blonde
girl and the red convertible the drives by you on
the side of the road, and he was she waves
and blows you a kiss and makes you think she's
gonna give you something, but she never does. He's a
big teas. He never did anything for the Colts. I mean,
I can understand why the fans are upset. He just
never did anything. I know it was hurt. Wait wait, wait,
(01:37:12):
he was fifty three and thirty three over his six
years there. He got him to the AFC Championship Game
at one point, and I get it. If he wasn't injured,
you could say, oh that you just said, But don't
you understand he was banged up for the last half
of his career. I do understand. I'm an Andrew Luck fan,
(01:37:33):
but he never lived up the expectations. And there's a
lot to it. I mean, I know his his his
offensive line was terrible, but I just don't I think
he was a big tease. I think that's why they're
so upset. All right, Jason, thanks for the call. Is
this uh a different Nate from India? I was gonna
say this is weird Nate from Indian Outputs during the
odd couple of Fox Sports Radio, What's Up, What's Up?
(01:37:54):
Fella's great show? Great show was always thank you. I
think the biggest issue that we're dealing with, and I'm
gonna let the last caller go, I'm not I'm gonna
I'm gonna try to ignore what he just said. But
I think the biggest issue that we're dealing with is
we've got a very smart young man, m financially, intellectually,
You've got a great hand on the shoulders, and I think,
I think what a lot of folks are not kicking
(01:38:17):
up on. This is a guy who knows and sees
everyone that's around him and sees how when everybody leaves
the leak, how they live their life and what they're
going through and where the NFL basically doesn't give a
damn about chip um So am I upset to the left,
of course I am. I'm an entire heart Tolds fan,
(01:38:39):
and I love Andrew Lucky. He's a great guy and
needs a great quarterback. But at a certain point in time,
it's if you know that, if it's not in your
heart and it's not in your mind, if you walk
out on that field and it's not in your heart
and it's not in your mind. You're gonna get killed. Period. No,
you can't play that why everybody else, Nate, no doubt.
You can't go out there half warded. Do you understand
(01:39:01):
the booze or do you think it was embarrassing for
for Indie Colts fans? I'm I'm I'm embarrassed. Um, I'm
embarrassed as a Colts fan because that's not That's not
who I represent, and that's not who we as Colts
fans represent, and that's that's just not how we You know,
if you come to Indianapolis, we're a great city. We're loving,
(01:39:21):
we're carrying, you know, we're welcome everybody with open arms.
So we don't do stuff like that typically. I just
I just feel like it's definitely it's definitely a bad
way to go out for the Sands. Um. But no,
I mean, I understand why they're upset, but no, it
was uncalled for completely. I appreciate. Are the Colts destined
(01:39:41):
for mediocrity? With Andrew Luck out of the picture? Stephen
Holder from The Athletic has the answer next, but first
be sure to catch live editions of The Odd Couple
with Chris Brussard and Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm
Eastern four pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the
iHeartRadio app Ralph. It is the Eye Couple Company, live
(01:40:02):
from the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios. It's easy to
say fifteen percent or more on your car shots with Geico.
Go to Geco dot com or call eight hundred nine
four seven Auto. The only hard part is figuring out
which way is easier covering it. We're fortunate to get
Stephen Holding Yeah, the best in the business. Yes, yes, Stephen,
(01:40:22):
what's happening, brother? He covers the colts for the Athletic.
What's happening man? I am doing great man. It's great
to talk to both of you, brothers. Uh. I take
two guys who have, at different times in my career,
been a lot of help to me back in my
NBA day, so I appreciate that from Yes, we both
way back with you man and you Athletic yea, and
(01:40:44):
we're glad to have you on. Um. I mean I'm
gonna get to a football question, well, I guess we'll
get in the emotions of the Andrew Lux thing as well.
But as a how good will the Colts be with
Jacobe Brissette under center. Look, I will tell you now,
and maybe I'm too close to it. You know, you
(01:41:04):
go through training camp and you see the team every
day and you kind of you get a work to do.
But I am so so intrigued by this team. I
think they have a chance to be interesting. And I
will tell you this was going to be, without a doubt,
with out a doubt, this is going to be the
most talented team answer Ruck had ever had in his career.
And it wasn't close. I'm telling you now, I say
(01:41:27):
that with no one play vocation, this is going to
be the deepest team and the best team that Andrew
Luck had played with. And so I think when you
take that into considerations, that tells me something. And listen,
all of this is on paper, granted, but that's all
we got right. And I think when you look at
the depths they have, you look at the skill positions. Look,
(01:41:48):
they have t Y Hilton and then after t Y
at receiver. They don't have a lot of household names,
but they have a great tight end unit and they
have a really smart offensive coach in Frank Reich. And
I think their offense just had limitless potential with Andrew Luck,
but I still think it has a lot of potential
with Jacobe Bursett under center. He had he was sacked
(01:42:10):
more than any quarterback in the league when he started
in fifth twenty seventeen, started fifteen games in place of
Arew Lucky, just sack in the any quarterback in the NFL.
There was a disaster. They had offensive line injuries. It
was a mess. That offensive line now a year later,
allowed the few sacks in the NFL last season and
has multiple first round picks on it. So I think
(01:42:32):
they're set up to do some things and defense is
actually got a chance to be surprisingly good. I think
Stephen Chris and I disagree about the booze that came
down with Lucas Oil, and I understand why. And I
say this is because fans come derived from the word fanatic,
where people are just they're all in and they were invested,
(01:42:55):
and they hear that their quarterback has quit. You're in
the stand. You don't know all of details. All you
know was your quarterback just walked out. He's not going
to be playing. I understand why fans reacted the way
Chris disagrees that fans should have never booed him. Where
are you on that? And how loud was it? And
were you surprised by the boot? So I will say
(01:43:17):
I will start by saying, look, I was I disappointed
by yes, and I felt bad for Andrew Luck because
the one thing I would say about Andrew Luck. You know,
we can There's been all kinds of opinions espouse about
you know, the timing of the decision and all of that.
But what I will tell you is Andrew Luck is
an absolute ten as a human being, and for that
(01:43:38):
reason I felt bad for him. But that being said,
at the same time, the way it unfolded, I somewhere,
I guess I'm somewhere in the middle. I know that's
a neutral answer, but I'm kind of switcher in on
this because I will tell you again, I felt terrible
for him. But at the same time, I used this
analogy on local television last night, and I'll recycle it here.
The way the news unfolded, with fans getting text alerts
(01:44:02):
and you know, friends and family sending people text messages
and Facebook and all that is the way it unfolded.
Angelo standing there on the sideline, just a fee feet away.
It was terrible. It was almost like my analysy I
used was it was like your girlfriend breaking up with you.
Like text, I would probably hate. I would probably hate
my person for a long time, and so it probably
(01:44:26):
would get over it at some point. I probably would
come around and be like, all right, we have some
good time. I'll move on. But initially I'm probably going
to hate. So I get it from both sides, and
I understand it. The emotions were so charged. I mean
I had all kinds of adrenaline running for me because
if you were you were well no, but I was.
(01:44:49):
I was booing because it's like, man, I'm gonna be here. Well,
we always think about ourselves that Stephen in the future. Man,
we need fresh material from you. Don't recycle. We're on
four hundred stations around the country. It's Stephen Holder from
(01:45:12):
the Athletic Covers the cults for them joining the Eye couple.
You mentioned the timing, I mean from Afar, I'm looking
at it like he the timing is bad, just because
he wanted to, you know, see if he could get
healthy and play, like he was almost kind of waiting
until the last moment to see if he could play
and so talk to me about that. But also I've
(01:45:35):
heard speculation that maybe the doctors told him, look, you're
gonna be out for a few months, and that's when
he was like, look, this is ridiculous. I mean, you know,
if it's not one thing, it's another. Have you heard
any rumblings to wear something like that is true as well?
I had not heard that. And now what I will
(01:45:57):
say is that within the last several days, the information
was really hard to come by and the flow of
information stopped. And obviously now we know why, right, it's
very clear now. But but before that, when people were talking,
what I was being told was that they were still
working through it. They didn't have concrete answers. But that
is almost as frustrating as knowing it's gonna be a while, Right,
(01:46:22):
So I don't necessarily think that's better, right when you're
antre luck and you have have dealt with so much
uncertainty and waiting and going through these these processes as
he outlined, you know, injury and rehab, injury rehab, I mean,
it's just gruing mental drain on you. And so I
(01:46:43):
think facing the potential for that again, that alone, okay,
it could have pumped Angel Luck to get to this one.
And I don't say this too, you know, I don't
think he was necessarily thinking about retirement a long time
ago and just waiting it out to see what would happen.
I don't think this is the first time retirement has
clocks to the mind necessarily. I'm sure it sort of.
(01:47:05):
I'm sorry he broke the subject internally with himself at
some point, but I don't think he was there. I
don't think he really got there until now. I really
think his intention was to get back on the field.
I mean again on January excusing. On July twenty fifth,
I went to the first practice of training camp and
Ante Luck was out there, and he was doing the
things that Angel Luck typically does. He was limited, granted
(01:47:29):
that that was Claire. They were going to protect him.
But for three days Angel Luck was out there, and
after three days of training camp, he came in and
told the trainers something doesn't feel right. And that's when
this thing started cascading and going the other way. But
he had every intention of playing and seemed really excited
for training camp. I didn't send any difference in him.
(01:47:49):
He seemed to be very optimistic about the team's chances
and he had every right to Steven they decided that
they're gonna let him keep like twenty five million dollars.
Would you consider that hush money put up the way
that they've botched his career as far as you know,
misdiagnosis all the other stuff. Is that the reason they're
say and a hanging on to that money or what? Well,
(01:48:12):
I want to say, I wouldn't say misdiagnosis, but what
I would say is it's a good will gesture because
he took a lot of He took a hell of
a beating in the name of helping the Indianapolis Colts.
And so you know what they I'll say, Look, Jim
Mercy has his issues, and he's quirky and all that,
but the man loved him to Andrew Luck, and I
think he just figured, you know what, this isn't a
(01:48:33):
battle that I'm going to fight against a guy who
I have a lot of love for. And so I
mean to be honest, I mean, I think Jim Mercy,
if he could, Jim Mercy their owner, he pay angel
Luck fifty million dollars to make this go away and
for Angeluck to be on the field this year. I mean,
I don't think there's any amount of money he wouldn't
pay for this to have turned out differently. So so
the twenty five million or whatever the sum is, I
(01:48:56):
think that is the Lifetime Achievement Award for Andrew Luck
for thanks for all as that she did. I think
that's what that is. Stephen. We got about a minute left.
I would not be surprised personally if a year, two years,
probably more like two years from now, Andrew Luck, his
body feels fine, he's healthy again, comes back to play.
(01:49:18):
Is do you think that's a possible. I'm not buying it.
I'm against, you know, legitimate possibility. I don't think it's likely.
I'm not ruling it out completely. But inflections difference. And
this is not Brett Farve, the Saint Roger Clemens. He's
a different guy. He's not eating up with it right.
I mean, he doesn't care about fame, he doesn't care
about money. This guy, he just happened to be good
(01:49:42):
at football, and he played football and he loved it.
He loved the game, but it was not his life's skull.
Like you know what, I'm gonna be an NFL quarterback
that was never Andrew luck. God gave him a gift.
He was good at it, he loved it, he enjoyed it,
and it just so happened. It worked out for him.
I don't know that he's going to wake up every
morning and miss playing football necessarily. All Right, great, great
(01:50:03):
Steve Man, We appreciate it. Keep up the great work.
We'll back in with you, no doubt. All right, Yeah,
the story is not over. Absolutely, we'll talk again. All right,
bro Peace, one of the biggest names in sports must
be a glutton for punishment. That's next is The a
Couple of Fox Sports Radio. Be sure to catch live
editions of The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob
(01:50:26):
Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific. At
Farmers Insurance, we know there's a crucial difference between a
kick drum pedal and your car's accelerator pedal, because at
Farmers we've seen and covered it. We are Farmers underwritten
my Farmers Truck Fire Insurance exchanges and affiliates products unavailable
(01:50:47):
in every state. All Right, Rob Parker's favorite song, this
is my theme song, Magic City Monday. Did you see
my Instagram? Chris, did you see it or not. Uh no,
what I may have I got of it. I just
(01:51:07):
put it up there nude. I've got a hundred singles said,
that's what you put on your Instagram. Yeah, I'm ready.
I take I take Magic City Monday, seriously is what
I wrote. It's on Instagram, all right, it is the EYA.
But that's Rob, of course I am Chris Bruce hard
and uh Rob, let's switch. We've been talking football. I've
(01:51:29):
been talking Colts all show long. We talked a little
bit of Yankees Dodgers. Let's go to basketball NBA. All right,
there was a big move. I don't know if you
saw it. An guaranteed contract is a big move, and
a d there is a big three. They get to
Whight Howard. Look at you? What are you a hype man? Really, Chris,
(01:51:53):
I'm being facetious. Um, look to me. This is how
I look at it now. As you said, I guaranteed deal.
This is a no risk, not even low risk, no risk,
potentially solid reward move. I think it's a good move.
I'm not saying I expect much from Dwight Howard. I
(01:52:14):
wouldn't be surprised if he's gone in two weeks into
the season because he was acting like a knucklehead in
the locker room or something. But here's a problem. But
if it, you know, it's like, let me just finish,
then you can go ahead. It's like Mellow in Houston
last year. They didn't work out, they got rid of him,
no sweat all right. If the White for whatever reason,
(01:52:35):
if it doesn't work out and they see it going south,
you get rid of him. You don't even have to
pay him a dime and then you just move on
with your season. So and if it works out, you
got a shot blocker, you got a rebounder, you got
a guy that can you know, bang with the big
centers in the West and save Anthony Davis from doing it.
So I actually think it's a good move because there's
(01:52:58):
no risk. I think it's a terrible move. Laker fans
hated that guy the whole way that it played out,
him coming to LA not getting along with Kobe. Remember
that same guy who just came for a non guaranteed contract,
left thirty million dollars on the table to escape from
LA and then to bring him in just comes across
(01:53:20):
as desperate. Why in the world do you want Dwight
Howard and if he was any good, If he was
any good, he'd have a guaranteed contract. They know he's
garbage before he even stepped foot. That's why he didn't
have a contract that's guaranteed. How many NBA players have
a non guaranteed contract. It tells you Dwight Howard is garbage? Why?
(01:53:42):
Why did they know? But why did they bring the
garbage in? The Laker stone came? What happened to the
Laker of himself? Yeah, he's a Laker? Did you really
care that? You don't want that out before you want
him to wear a Laker jersey again? I want all
the bad things in life to happen to Dwight Howard
and nobody else. Wow, Paul George, you're upset about Paul
(01:54:06):
George's second Wanna was the key reason that that Dwight's
not gonna play enough for people to be really upset
about it. But I gotta tell it, But I gotta
tell you. Lakers Twitter was heated when this announcement came
down on up with everybody, Oh my god, what people
(01:54:27):
just saying, no, we don't want him right but around
it's not so much that you know he the way
he left anything like that. He has the reputation of
being soft, and that's the worst thing you can have
if you're coming to the Lakers and you expect to
compete for championships. Next thing is mush Parker's gonna be
added to the roster. Here's the thing, though, he actually
(01:54:49):
could add some value. Like I said, he can rebound,
he can finish, he can block shots, and he can bang. Hey,
and if he's not willing it now, the reports are that,
you know, he met with some players, met with the
front officers and coaching staff, and he's said, look, I've
been humbled, I've hit rock bottom. I'm not coming in
(01:55:13):
expecting to post up on the block and you guys
to get me ten touches, post entry passes down there.
I know who I am now. It's not Lebron, it's
not a d it's not even Kyle Kuzma, Chris. He
just wants to be a part of something. If this
was a baby making team, I want Dwight Howard on
(01:55:33):
my team. He can get that job done. Well, I'm sorry,
I'm not buying it. I'm I think it's a ridiculous.
It's it tells you how desperate the Lakers are shame
on the Lakers to bring that guy back. They're not desperate.
If you think they're desperate, then you think they have
absolutely positively no chance to win the championship because the
(01:55:55):
White's not changing anything. Why bring him in White? Bring
him in there? If he does, you don't want Anthony
Davis to have to bang with the big centers in
the West. I'm sorry, I'm not barring it. I think
it's a mistake and he will not finish the season
with the Lake. That might be the case, but if
if if that comes to pass, you didn't lose anything.
That's my point. I couple go to iTunes, Apple, SoundCloud, podcast,
