Welcome back. What's happening? How you doing this? I'm great show.
(01:10):
Took Friday off take care of some business and it
was kind of like uh k D missing games. We
rolled the Jonas Knocks anymore. I'm a luxury. People to
have a luxury, not a necessity. Unbelievable, go one day.
(01:30):
You know I missed three days since we started this show.
They've they've been all being in the last three weeks.
I know not this, I know all of a sudden
like Robin always, they always want all So, how you
doing you good? All good? Was in Motown for the weekend,
so some friends took here some business. Everything is good.
Good stop by the barbershop, all the guys as forty
(01:53):
cuts was great. That's good to hear man, yes, to
hear all right, let's welcome in the couple of Cool.
Wouldn't be able to do this fine radio program with
thout him. Of course. Rob g is our producer, Iowa
Sam is he our engineer, and for Alex, Brian Finley
is the sports anchor. He'll keep us updated throughout the program.
Always great to have Brian here. Of course. In turn,
(02:15):
Jonah and Elijah our social media guru, and they're all
on the other side of the glass. On this Monday,
on this Magic City Monday and magic a magic Monday,
Johnson Monday. After what he Magic City. They kind of
go together. So we'll do that as we uh, let's
(02:39):
kick some ass on this Monday. What a crazy Monday. Well,
sometimes a show will just write itself on it. There
were times we were both writers still right, when you
don't have to do anything, that's what we're calling the
press box. Just write it. It's right there. You don't
have to do anything, don't overtake, you don't get cute,
just write it. Yeah, and today that's what the case
(03:03):
is with our show. As Magic, Johnson went on ESPN's
First Take with Stephen A. Smith, Max Kellerman, great get
and just eviscerated Rob Polinka. Yep, his former partner. Magic
was a president. Rob Polinka was the gym and remember
(03:24):
when Magic stepped down, what was it a month month
and a half ago, He said that there had been
some backstabbing and things like that going on within the organization.
He didn't allude to who he was talking about it.
You and I Rob, we had both heard that, and
then we had heard and also just putting two and
two together that it was beef between here and Rob Polinka,
(03:49):
and Magic confirmed it today. Here's a little bit of it.
People around the Laker office was telling me Rob was
saying things and Rob Polinka and I didn't like those
things being said behind my back, that I wasn't in
the office enough, and so on and on. So I
started getting calls from my friends outside of basketball saying
those things now were said to them outside of basketball now,
(04:13):
not just in the Laker office anymore. Now it's in
the media and so on. He's a people you trust exactly,
and people got to remember something. Being in this business
Vold for forty years, I got allies, I got friends everywhere.
What happened was I wasn't having fun coming to work anymore,
especially when I got to work beside you, knowing that
you want my position. And I'm okay with that because
(04:35):
this is what happened, Stephen. I told him in year two,
I'm only going to be here three years. So my
job is robbed to get you ready for this position. Now.
The interesting thing is this, and Rob Pelinka alluded to
it today after the Lakers had a press conference to
introduce Frank Vogel as their head coach. He said he
just talked to Magic two days ago, said that what
(04:57):
he heard Magic say was saddening and heartening. Those are
his exact words, and he thinks it's a misperception on
Magic's part. I've talked to some people about this too,
they said. Magic and Rob Perlink are still in conversations.
Brad Turner wrote the story in the La Times today
after Magic's comments, where Magic was quoted as saying he
(05:18):
still talks to Rob and will continue to talk to Rob.
But Magic put it all out there on the table
on first take. Rob, whether you're Rob Parker, what are
your feelings about this? I'm gonna tell you, I'm pretty amazed.
I've been in this business thirty three years, Chris, I've
seen a lot of stuff done. Magic can't talk from
both sides of his mouth. I'm much he loves the
(05:40):
organization and how he wants to recruit to help them
get another star from Lebron James. When he did what
he did today, which is essentially blow up to the organization,
That's what it was. It was pure betrayal. Chris Broussard.
Magic betrayed the Lakers today to go out public. I'm
(06:00):
not saying he can't get that same message out without
going on television naming Rob Polinka by name. Here's the problem, Chris,
Rob Polinka already has a bad reputation in the league.
For to put this out out of Magic's mouth, that
he was backstabbing and doing this other stuff makes him
(06:21):
almost irrelevant and hard to work and do anything for
that organization. Whereas Magic said, he has other people out
there who are Magic Johnson, people who will look at
Rob Polinka and be like, I'm not talking to that guy.
I'm not dealing with that guy. It's a bad thing.
Magic came off sadly as a scorn lover. It looked
(06:44):
like an episode from Loving Hip Hop. That's what that
was today. It was embarrassing. And I'm gonna tell you this.
If I'm Gene Buss, I would personally get a step
ladder in a blanket and I would go out in
front of April Center and cover up Magic Johnson's statue.
I would do that right now. I would cover up
(07:08):
his statue. Wow, I'm telling you, and I'm gonna tell
you this. Are you is that hyperbole or are you serious?
I'm dead serious. And Magic Johnson is prasada non grata
and laker Land for right now. I'm not saying forever.
How long for right now? I don't know. Definitely, like
(07:28):
like James Harden was the best player in the world
right now, and definitely the next two weeks and definitely
until you know, like they can they can get back
together and make up. But I've seen this before. Let
me give you a hold on. Let me give you
my example, because it happened before. Reggie Jackson was like
a team advisor and coach spring training with the Yankees.
(07:49):
He had a job. He went out and did an
article and he ripped a rod and uh, a couple
other players, you know with the Yankees and the steroid stuff.
And then Yankee said, dude, no, no, no, no more
Yankee events, no more spring training, nothing, and definitely we
don't want you around. Reggie Jackson, one of the greatest
(08:10):
players who ever wore pinstripes. And they told them, don't
come around. Now they've they've made up, and time went
by and now Reggie's back in their good graces. But
I'm telling you, Chris, what Magic did today was so
gasoline on the building and burn everybody inside of it.
He should never never have done that on television publicly.
(08:33):
Whether you hate Rob Polinka, whether it's all true, that's
not how you handle I can't believe Magic. I can't
think of another situation where somebody supposedly loves an organization
and only wants to help it and want them to win.
But does this to make this mess even worse and
stop people from wanting to be involved with the Lakers.
(08:54):
That's what he did. It was betrayal. Chris, Okay, okay, okay,
all right, let me address what you just said. I
know you're proud of yourself. Look at you. What I
wish the listeners could see what number one I'm just
told it like, I got three points to make. I
do agree with you that Magic definitely hurt the Lakers,
(09:17):
whether he purposely went out there to harm them or
he didn't think it out and Jess was reacting emotionally
or whatever. But this will not help them in free agency,
not at all layers. So when you say you want
to help recruit them, this was the opposite. Because players
are sophisticated today and they're looking at the structure of
(09:38):
the organization and they want to know how well it's run.
That's one of the strengths of the Clippers when it
comes to free agency. Brooklyn will have that as well,
and when they look at the Lakers, they're gonna say, man,
you if you could betray Magic, you couldtray me in
any moment. Okay, an right, So I do agree with
(10:01):
you there, however, and I want to make sure you're
serious about the blanket. I'm dead serious. I would take
they'd already run like a mom and pop stool. I
would cover up that way blanket top of Magic Johnson's statue.
You talk about looking bush league. You know what I
would do, and would you say it would be a
(10:23):
move it. It would be a wet blanket. That's what
I would do. Put a whip let over there there.
First of all, there is no way because Rob that
would backfire on you. Number one, It would look bush league.
I would look mom and pop number two. A Magic
Johnson is a legend, and players and others would look
(10:45):
at it like, Okay, maybe he misspoke, maybe he was
out of turn, but this is Magic Johnson, the greatest
laker of all time. You don't do that to him.
I would revoke his past. I wouldn't let him. I'm
into the building is I would stop him. I'm telling
you for right now, and definitely I would do it.
(11:06):
New York thirty minutes. No, I don't mean I'm with it.
Maybe next season. We don't want you a magic don't
show off and here's your busy doing everything else. Go
ahead and run your coffee shops and bowling alleys at
movie theaters. We don't want you. Here goes to God.
I want the dog bit stop it, right Now that
is Magic Johnson. You do not do that and don't
(11:28):
act like the Lakers. Who are they to get on
the high horse, Genie Buss. They still, to your point,
they have not talked yet. We still have not heard
from Jennie Breed that they haven't done the right right.
They cut off today's press conference prematurely because they didn't
want to address these things. So, no, the Lakers can't
get on their high horse. Whether Magic was wrong or not.
(11:50):
Third thing, as great as Reggie Jackson was, and he
was great, he is not And you know this is
not Magic job He's as big as Magic Dy Jackson. No,
he yes he is. He is not mister join the top.
He is not one of the top five baseball players
in history. Yes he is, as far as far as stature,
(12:13):
not just mister October. Is he one of the best
feminy baseball players in his many guards? Serious, You're really
gonna sit here and say that, Yes, I'm talking about
even one of the best five Yankees in his I'm
talking about when you talk about the flaw he had
what he meant and nobody has that name. You know
what October's about. October's about World Series and no other
(12:36):
player was named mister October jack Man. Stop no, but
that nickname stuck because that's how big he was in
our Rookie Jackson and little Reggie Jackson. He's a Hall
of Famer. He's was great. He had three home Magic Johnson.
Stop it. There is no way he was Magic Johnson.
(12:58):
He was better and the big moments. You're killing your plot.
Go ahead, Oh, he wasn't better in the big moment,
So don't bring up Reggie Jackson and Magic Johnson and
the Yankees. Magic came out and criticized Lebron James and
the whole team and said they were cheating and sowing
and so forth. That might be one thing. He didn't
(13:21):
go that far, but he hurt went that far with
a ride and the steroids and all that. That's different.
So no, you can't compare what Magic did. It definitely
hurt the Lakers the day. But you're you're you're tripping.
Put a blanket over his statue? What blanket? If you said,
(13:42):
remove it and put it in the back for a
few weeks, that would make Morrison's I still wouldn't agree
with that, but that would make more sense than going
out there and throwing some cheap old blanket. They already
looked like the freaking CVS compared to you know, American
Express or something, some giant corporation, and now you want
(14:03):
him to look even worse. Our producer Rob g is
one of the biggest Laker fans. Rob Gi agrees with me.
Do you agree with that? He agreed Roby a blanket
over Yes? Yeah, let me test you. Would you say
that about Kobe Bryant. Ever, if Kobe did what Magic
(14:24):
Johnathan today, hell yeah, I would stop it. Stop it. See.
But when we talked to people, they're gonna be on
my side on this because what he did was ridiculous.
And I get it, Rob per, Lakers shouldn't be there.
They when Magic tried to fire him and he didn't
try to fire him, he didn't say, he didn't say
he didn't try to fire him. I don't believe that
(14:46):
totally because because otherwise it sounds like sour grapes said
he couldn't get him fired, and that's why he's hitting
on him. You know what I mean, banging him over
the head today, I believe you did. You're turned the way,
in my goodness. A blanket a wet blanketed, a wet
blanket eight seven seven ninety nine off, you know what,
I would pick up the phone and call Linus and
(15:08):
ask him could I ball him? Getting even worse? Let
me get you off the air before you really go
down the foxhole or whatever I'm talking about. A seven
seven ninety nine or Fox eight seven seven nine nine
six sixty three sixty nine. Do the Lakers need to
make Magic Johnson disappear? We'll continue the conversation with you.
(15:28):
Next is the Fox Sports Radio. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Odd Couple with Chris Brussard and
Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app. At
Farmers Insurance, we know every windshield collision has a unique sound.
Beatle bird boop drone. Seen it covered it? Doctor Farmers.
(15:52):
We are farmers underwritten. My farmers took fire insurance exchanges
and affiliates proucts unailable in every state. I mean no,
it's the Eye Couple. Chris Brussard and Rob Parker. We
got some great news for you. There is a quick
(16:13):

you could save fifteen percent or more on your car insurance.
Go to Geico dot com and see how much you
can save. All right, we threw it out to you.
Should the Lakers banish Magic Johnson because of what he
did today? Rob says, yes, I say stop it. Let's
(16:36):
see what I'm saying. He take it even further and
cover up that statue out in front the Staplescenter with
a blanket. That's what he deserves after the bo So
let's get to some rational human beings here. Jac in Texas,
you're on with the Eye couple. What's up? Fellas? Are you? Man? Rob?
You got my juices going? And Bro, are we gonna
(16:59):
put a web black get on the man that brought
the NBA to the hype that is right now? Thank you?
Why why don't you just get a sword and cut
the head like the game My Thrones and put it
up in the right there in front of the Staple Centers.
Come on, man, j c JA, let me ask you this.
(17:20):
You think what he did help the organization today or
did it hurt the organization? No? It it did harm
to the organization. But you know what the championships of
the Lakers speak for itself. I'm not saying, I'm not
saying forever. I'm just saying, and definitely Magic should be
(17:40):
Posada non garta. We don't want you. He hasn't done
any more harm to the organization than Genie Buss and
the Rambuses have done. Yeah, in the last month, but
Magic knows better. Those people don't know better. She's the owner,
don't I don't care. Come on, thanks jac for the call.
What about Mike and Main You're on the couple of
Fox Sports Radio. What you got Mike? Hey, gentlemen, how
(18:03):
are you doing good? Hey man? How are you very good?
If I can, I sat at a new job in October,
the only radio station I had with you guys, and
I gotta be honest. In the beginning, I was a
little too much King George and Rob, a little too
much negative Tom Brady. Okay, but I'm in a very
rural spot. I'm really glad I stuck with you guys.
You guys are absolutely fantastic. You're very entertaining, You're very informative.
(18:25):
I now find myself looking forward, Wasn't that's really nice?
Just made out day today? There you go. I agree
with you. Magic knows better. He's a professional, He's got
multiple other businesses. I think he did this on purpose.
You've got you gotta keep your mouth shut. We've all
been in situations where you can throw the match down,
(18:47):
but you gotta be a you gotta be smart, you
gotta be a businessman. I'll walk away. Keep your mouth shut. Absolutely,
get story out without going on TV and saying Laker's name.
That's all about the blanket over the statue? Is that
going a little too far? Mike Well as a selfish fan? Alright,
(19:09):
very nice. Let's go to LaVale in North Carolina. Lavell,
you're on with the Eye couple. What's going on? Fellas?
What up? Oh man? Rob rob what? What? What do
you want? You want to put a blanket over his jersey?
And the Raptors? Too right for right now? All right now, robout. Now.
I do agree what he did did not help the organization,
(19:31):
But they've been mediocriphy for the past six years, So
how much of a come up were they really are?
If anybody should be banned, it should be robbed because
now they officially what Magic did was confirmed with everyone
was telling him like he said, in the movie. You said,
people already taught him that watch out for Rob, watch
out for him. And he got his confirmation. And what
he said today just confirmed what everyone was that that's fine.
(19:54):
But but Lave, if you're a Laker fan, they already
have a mess in the front office. Now Magic is
made people even more If Robert Lincoln is a GM,
I'm not coming to La Look at what Rob did
to Magic. Why would I put my first place? Well,
but now they really are, Now they really aren't. There
was already a mess in the first place, Rob. It
(20:15):
was already a mess. Like how like how bad it
really happened? It's a hot mess now, all right? It
was appreciate the call. Let's go to a mid in
Los Angeles amid you know with Christ and Rob. I
love you guys, and Magic get the right thing. He
stood up like a man, took ownership for his mistakes.
He gave constructive criticism, and he did it all in
(20:36):
love and said he will still support That's what a
man should do. No, no, no, But you can't say
you love the organization and throw a blowtorch on it,
because because what he did does not help the organization.
It's a mod I hear what you're saying about being
a man in circain situations. But he did not help
the Lakers today. He hurt them. I think I think
(20:58):
both of y'all are right. Like on the on the Devil,
you can say Magic went out there. Enough of the
anonymous quotes, enough of the mystery, enough of people guessing
what really I was talking about. This is what I
was talking about. But you are right, Rob, it didn't help.
He could be right, but it didn't help the organization.
But to you know, how many? How much? You know,
(21:20):
how many were they gonna get? Anyway, as far as
free agents, we'll see how it works out. Let's go
to Mike in California. Mic, you're on with the outcome. Hey, guys,
thanks for taking my call. Yep, real quick, Can you
put a sock in Rob's mouth and put a blanket
over him? Say the only thing your couple is his cakes?
All right? Magic? John make the NBA with Lowry Bird
(21:46):
back in the day. Look, I'm a Celtic fan. I
do not like the Lakers at all, but he is
the epitome of what the Lakers were. They haven't won
an NBA championship and how long guys, come on, give
me a break, all right, and he spoke the truth? Yeah,
but what you do this bus man is married to
Phil Jackson or David him for what twenty years is
(22:06):
the greatest coach of all time. Don't even go there
with me that she doesn't know what she's doing. But Mike, Mike,
you gotta admit magic did not help the organization today.
Can you at least admit that? Look it, I'll admit
he did not help the organization today. But they haven't
helped themselves in what eight years since they won their
last championship, So you can't even give that. And real
quick about Reggie Jackson, Okay, there's somebody way better than him,
(22:29):
Senior October David Ortiz, No way stopping Reggie stopping. There
you go, guys, have a go all right. The Warriors
are on Jonah, look up David Ortiz and Reggie. I
want to see what the number the Warriors are on
the verge of going five and oh without Kevin Durant?
Is it fair to say they're a better team without
(22:51):
king competition? Former Warrior killinna Azabukee has the answer next,
but first let's get to Brian Finley for the Latest
in Sports. Fine, what's up, Hey, guys, what's going on? Yeah,
this was supposed to be Frank Vogel's day, you know,
the Lakers introducing him as their head coach. He was
going to go up there and explain his vision and
how he's going to lead the Lakers out of this dump.
(23:13):
But Vogel will became an afterthought in this news pecking order,
and you can blame Magic Johnson for that, as he
hopped on ESPN's first take and accused general manager Rob
Polinka of betraying him when the twos worked together with
the Lakers. Polinka later on in the day answered, right back,
I think the most important thing for me is the
two years of getting to work side by side with
(23:35):
Erwin are some of the greatest memories I have in
sports and work. He's an unbelievable person to work with.
He fills the room with joy and vision and truly
it's it's saddening and disheartening to think he believes things
are a misperception. That begs the question, what does Polinka
do anyway? Meanwhile, the Warriors looked for the sweep tonight
(23:57):
at nine pm in the Western Conference Finals. Again the Blazers.
According to ESPN, the Grizzlies have gotten the okay to
talk to Blazer's assistant Nate Timbots about the team said
coaching position. A online car shopping can be confusing, but

LeVar Ball? Actually right all along what he said earlier
about Genie Bust and the Lakers to dysfunction. It's Ball

it's the I a couple of thanks, Brian. We're coming

only hard part is figuring out which way is easier.
Our next guest, I'm I was so excited when I
saw who our next guest was. He's a good friend
of mine. We haven't talked in too long, so we
(25:43):
gotta get on the phone after this call this week
or something. But he's a former NBA veterans up because
Katie said you're not big time anymore, so you haven't
heard Oh no, no, he's just a good friend of mine.
We've both been lax on the NBC Sports Bay Area
analysts Kalinna a book at Kleina, what's happening man, and
tell it man? How you been christ but a long time?
(26:05):
I know, I know, definitely, definitely later this week. Let's
talk for sure, Let's do it. Let's do it. You
have an up close and personal seat for the Warriors,
and what do you make I mean, what's your opinion
on the talk that they are better that. I don't
(26:28):
say they're better. I just think it's unopened. It's a
legitimate question. They're not more talented, but the way they play,
I think, well, it remains to be seen if they're better.
But they don't even have to be better without KD.
They just have to be better than everybody else in
the league without KD. So what's your take on this
whole narrative, Clina, I agree with that they just have
(26:51):
to be better than averybody else in the league, but
they're not a better team without KD. But without KD,
I think the sense of urgency go up, the margin
of error is slimmer, and they realized they have to
be better in a lot of different areas. They have
to be better on the defensive side. And listen, I
think it's interesting when Katie went down one of the
(27:12):
things that Step said was he was looking at the
guys on the bench and a smile came across some
of the guy's faces after Kad went down, right, And
it wasn't a smile like where we're happy our guy
went down. Now let's go play. No, it's we understand
what time it is, we know what we need to do,
we know how we have to play. We're gonna run
pick and rolls. STEP's gonna be at the helm, We're
(27:34):
gonna move the ball, and we got to defend. And
that's what they did. They're confident in the way they play.
I think Draymond Greene has been incredible just pushing the
tempo and pushing it after makes. He did that in
Game three against the Blazers. After makes he was getting
the ball out the rim and pushing up the floor,
getting into the paint before the Blaze even knew what
hit him, he was making plays. And Step has been
(27:56):
incredible closing games out. So I just think there's more
of a teniversity I know. So the bench has really
woken up since Kadi went down, and a lot of
the guys are really excited about the opportunity to play
meaningful minutes in high pressure playoff games and the Western
Conference Finals, and they've been doing it since the Rocket series,
(28:18):
obviously in that Game six, and then they've been playing
well during this series. And you got Quinn Cook coming
off the bench throwing heavies at bigs and get into
the basket. You got McKinney, offensive rebounding guys are given
multiple efforts. So when your leaders are playing with as
much energy and efforts as Steph does and as Clay
does and Draymond Green, you have no choice but the
(28:41):
fall in line. And those guys coming off the bench
are already excited about their opportunity to play more minutes.
So it's all kind of adding up to this great
basketball and beautiful basketball like we're seeing. But they're not
a better team without KD. Yeah, maybe they're a little
more annoying to defend, because if I'm a defend, I
think I'd still rather guard Katie in the midpost and
(29:03):
have him be stationary and have myself be stationary. And
he's just giving me buckets. At least I'm not having
to chase step off his screens and figure out how
to get through stagger screens and and maneuver through split
action screens and all these different things. That's that's more annoying.
I'd rather have you give me buckets. But I'm stationary
and not working as hard, so maybe it's more annoying.
I can understand maybe what Set is talking about, but
(29:26):
they're not a better team. He's an unguardable player most
of the time, and it'll be helpful if they get
him back for the finals, for sure. Word just came
down at Andre Iglidala is officially out for tonight's game
with that calf. How much will I hurt the Warriors.
It'll hurt him, It'll hurt him. He's a guy that's
(29:46):
looked like he's found the fountain of youth. He's been springies.
He's been in the dunker's spot in the pick and
roll and they double staff, they give it to Draymond
and he's going two on one and the help comes
and he throws the lib to Andre Goodala. He's been
in credible on the defensive side on the floor. You
saw that strip on Damiel Lillard. And they're gonna miss them.
(30:07):
So I think they'll probably start Twin Cook. They're not
no no Quinn Cook, probably McKinney. They'll probably start McKinney,
and everybody else off the bench has to be that
much better. You lose a good player off the bench,
and McKinney if that's what the case is. But it's
just next man up. And I'm a little surprised that
he's not playing because I heard him tell him some
(30:28):
people that he was gonna play and nothing's gonna keep
him out. But I've had an achilles injury like that before,
and it's I think they're saying it's calf, but I
feel like it's more achilles. I've had ten nitis in
the achilles and that can be pretty painful. Sometimes you
can hit it with some pain medication and be fine.
I know I stuck a little platform to the bottom
(30:49):
of my insul just to to make it to where
my achilles doesn't stretch as much when I push off
of it, and it took a little pressure off the
achilles there. But I'm not sure that's exactly what it is.
But hopefully he's able to rest up this game and
the Wars will maybe have a sense of urgency to
close this thing out so he can get nine days
off and then get him back healthy for the finals.
(31:11):
That's right, So that now makes this the Warriors are
without three guys who won final MVPs, but Steph, I
guess will score ninety points and make up for that, right,
Hey with it. He's been incredible closing games out. The
one thing for him is his turnovers. He he had
I think five again last game. He just forgets the
ball fake ever now and then before he passes he
(31:33):
just kind of flips it over the top of people
and tries to catch people off guards. He's just so
excited about moving after he passes, he forgets to actually
get it to it to contended target before he moves.
But he's been just wonderful reading the defense. And the
frustrating thing about what he's doing for the Blazers is
they're throwing all kinds of different coverages at him. Obviously.
(31:54):
The first game Terry Starts took a lot of heat
because the Biggs were kind of dropping off, not even
following this screen on step Curry's ball screens and we're going,
do you realize who this is? Open? You know, just
just let them let them take office, right exactly. So,
so they made it easy for him me at thirty
six points, and the next game they double team and more,
(32:16):
he gets more points, thirty seven points, and he's just saying, well,
I'll just two to death, I'll hit mid range jumpers,
I'll get to the batsket, I'll give it up quickly
and maybe get it back and relocate or around the
three point line. So that's that's the great thing about Steph.
And that's the difference between I think him and play
and then the other backcourt and who's everybody is saying
is the other best backcourt in the league, and Damon
(32:37):
CJ is Damon CJ. I believe are easier to take
out of the game because you can double team them,
and a lot of times they're reluctant to give it up,
and then when they give it up, they don't really move,
they don't. Is that the difference because I, well, without
the ball, yeah, because Damien the defenses he's facing with
the double teams, I mean, correct me if I'm wrong.
Step faces those all the time and he's able to
(33:01):
still be effective. Is it because they move better without
the ball? Yeah? Yeah, step step will give it up
and he will sprint. Step starts working after he gives
the ball up, right, And he just relying on the
fact that human nature is the defender will just take
a quick break as soon as he gives it up,
and that's when step gets his separation, and he's gonna
(33:22):
come off the screen as teammates look for him. Someone's
gonna set a screen, maybe on the base line. He's
gonna come off to the corner at one of his
spots to knockdown three Dame and CJ. If you double team,
first of all, they don't really want to give the
ball up. They don't pass it quick. And that's one
thing about the double teams that helps you beat the
double team better. If you give the ball a fast
(33:42):
and you make a great pass to your teammates to
where he can attack and be in position to attack.
If you kind of wait a little bit and you
just don't give him a good pass, you lob it
over the top, give the defense time to recover, and
it's much tougher for the role players to score. So
that's gonna be an issue with times. And then and
they give it up, they're pretty much out of the play.
They're not really involved anymore, so you're just relying on
(34:04):
the role players to hopefully make a play in and
for the first half, Myers. Leonards was hurting the Warriors right.
He was making plays, he was knocking down threes and
all those things. But then the second half, when you
need your stars to be stars, they're not involved. They're
not really in rhythm. Even the open shots they're getting,
they're not really knocking those down. They're not really playing
with energy. I thought their body language, both of them,
(34:25):
CJ and Dame, their body languages was in the basement
and the other the rest of the team kind of
follows their lead. So the other guys had tough had
a tough time trying to get their energy up two
and the Warriors were making effort plays and just following
their leaders Step and Clay and Draymond the way they're
playing with energy. So everybody comes off the best playing
with energy. So I think that's kind of the difference
between the two backcourts and why Dame and CJ are
(34:48):
having a tough time. Right, We thought a Pelicans do
the same thing, going with with Drew Holliday and rise
On Rondo double team in them right, former NBA veteran
Collinaza Bouquet joining us on the eye. We got about
thirty seconds left. Kalina, who do you think is obviously
the Warriors are gonna win this series. Who do you
think is the better matchup for them coming out of
(35:10):
the Eastern Conference or who would, let me put it
this way, who would give them a tougher series and
have a chance to beat them a tougher series. Yea,
I'd say probably Milwaukee. I think Milwaukee beat them up
pretty good in December, and their length gave them a
(35:32):
really tough time. And then the Warriors Achilles heel at
times can be the turnovers and they struggle. They have
struggled in the past against length, just kind of throwing
the ball over the place, not throwing ball fakes at
guys before they pass it, and they just kind of
throwing the hands. And with the Milwaukee Bucks, their length
and their speed and their athleticism can be an issue
(35:53):
if you're not careful and you're turning the ball over,
So I think that's one issue. And then rebounding. Obviously
they got some size of Brook Lopez and they can
try to attack the glass, and if the Warriors aren't
focused there, that can be an issue. But I think
the Warriors will key on those things, and then the
key for the Warriors is defense really, so they're gonna
(36:15):
come up with a scheme and a good game plan.
They're good enough defensively to make it tough on Yannis.
Obviously you're seeing in this series right now with the
Bucks against Toronto, he can be taken out of the game.
He doesn't really have a jump shot. And can they
beat them without KD The Wars, I'm not gonna say
they can't. I'm not gonna say they can't. Look they're
(36:35):
confident in the way they play. It's step on the
offensive side, it's the ball movement. As long as you
don't turn over, and you rebound and you work on
the defensive end, you show Yannis bodies and the Wars
are good enough defensively to make it tough on Yannis,
but didn't help and recover and get back to other
guys and and and give them a tough time too,
especially if Bloods continues to play the way that he's
(36:56):
playing right now, that makes it easier on the Wars.
I know, so what other so in other words, so
in other words, no, you said, like twenty things had
to happen. They can be The Warriors can be. An
in the great stuff, man, I'm gonna week man, I'm
made you later this week, all right, Broye do that? Bro? Yeah, yeah,
thank you? So sad. There are levels to this game,
(37:17):
and one NBA star is learning that lesson the hard way.
That's next. It's the a couple of Fox Sports Radio
at Farmer's Insurance. We know the sound of a perfect
hot air balloon landing and a lesson perfect one. I've
seen it, covered it doctor Farmers, we are farmers under
(37:37):
written my Farmers truck Fire Insurance Exchanges and affiliates product
unavailable every state. You're checking out the odd couple. Oh man,
very white man, it's my guy right here. Yeah. White
(38:00):
was Barry Whitt. He was the first Biggie. That sounds crazy,
what mean yeah, because he was a singer. Biggie was
a rapper. But yeah, big, big, big guy, great, huge dude, overweight,
my favorite woman and first last everything. That's my favorite
Barry White song. Yeah, I don't know what my favorite
(38:23):
playing your game? I love I love so much of
his stuff. Dope. All right, it's the Eye couple Chris
and Rob and Damian Lillard. I was so high I
know when Damien. Look, he's still a great player, pretty
all star and all that, But I felt like after
he demolished the great Russell Westbrook in round one, including
(38:48):
the thirty seven foot and heard around the world, and
he was so cool, calm and collected. After that, I
felt robbed, like he had gone to that next level,
like he had gone to that James Hardened level. You know, No,
I don't, because he has struggled, not only against Golden
(39:08):
State in this round, but even against Denver in the
last round. His last ten games since he waved goodbye,
he's been good bye his right, he's gone goodbye to
the thunder. He has shot thirty eight percent thirty from
the field, thirty one percent from three. He's got sixty
four assists in those ten games, but thirty four turnovers
(39:30):
a plus minus of negative forty one. Now you might say, well, yeah,
they're they're losing three h to the Warriors, but this
include as well four. That's how bad it is. It's worse.
And then here's the thing. In this series, these three games,
he has fourteen turnovers and only fifteen field goals. Fifteen mate,
(39:56):
that's turnovers. So and Kalina Ozabucke made a great point
because when you watch obviously Golden States double teaming him
and taking the ball out of his hands. But they
people teams do that to Steph Kirby all the time,
and he obviously is still very effective. The difference though,
(40:17):
is that Dame gives it up late. So rather than
giving up to your teammate in a position where he's
gonna be an aggressor make do something, you're really giving
it up to a teammate as he's bailing you out.
Now he's like coming and get it because bailing you out,
and then they don't move without the ball, he and CJ.
So that makes it easier. Once you get the ball
out of their hands, they're done, whereas with Steph, you
(40:39):
get the ball out of his hands, but he's moving
so much he can go get it somewhere else. So
this has really been eye opening to me. Lillard kind
of struggling like this. Yeah, I mean I thought people
were quick, and I get it. He had that series
break out. Everybody thought, well, this is it. He's moved
past Ross all the narrative and all that, and he's
just he hadn't he hadn't lived up to it. And
(40:59):
I'm gonna say you had to score fifty points a night, right,
but he got built off by c J at the
end that he played terrible in six and seven. Right,
and some of this reminds me of Chris Paul some
of the struggles he's had late in the playoffs, you know.
And he's obviously an all time great, but still when
you don't get it done in the biggest moments, it
(41:21):
does come back to haunt all right. I Couple, Chris
and Rob two hours left. We will talk about our

tip off. I think the Golden State Warriors are going
to eliminate the Portland Trailblazers tonight. Maybe Portland gets or
(42:07):
you say momentum because Andrea gadollars right. I think Portland
is defeated, like I think they know, but the fact
that iguadollars out may give them a little hope and
change the momentum and maybe they can get a win
to Night. Are you predicting the win to Night by
Portland without Andre? I am speaking of which you you
(42:30):
love doing wing bets, So I'm betting how about that
Golden State without KD? So if he comes back and plays,
the bets off, but that Golden State without KD will
still win the finals already, Yes, Okay, now again, if
(42:50):
he comes back and plays, it's off, you know, for
both of us, unless you think you want to bet
that they won't win it even with KD. Well, I'm
sorry to think the longer he's out that he's not
coming back. Yeah, but that's really I think. No, I think,
and I think that the more they win, the more
patient they'll be with him to like no reason about
if they get down and he's ready, maybe they'll bring
(43:11):
him back. I just want to see what the story
what the storyline is when they get to the finals
and lose, and then I'll just so you ready to
make the bet, yeah, because I don't think they'll win.
Already have a wing bet on something? What is it
that it might be this. Speaking of that, guess what
I got in the mail today from Wingstop. Yeah, one
hundred dollars gift card. Very nice, that will last you
(43:32):
two days. All right, That's what I have for speaking
of Kevin Durant. Chicken wings. All right, sorry, speaking of
Kevin Durant. I say it on Friday, and I guess
it's gone viral. Said it on Fox Sports Radio here
on this show with Jonas Knocks feeling in for Rod Parker.
(43:53):
That something that goes viral is that. Now I've said
a few things, but I was not trying to hate
the habbolt, the habbad CEC. I said that the Golden
State Warriors winning the championship without Kevin Durant is his
worst nightmare coming to pass. And I'm not saying they're
(44:16):
better without KD. I think it's a legitimate question, and
I think it's one that is in the process of
being answered. Yeah or nay. We have to wait and
see can they beat Milwaukee or Toronto without Kevin Durant.
But anyone who says, oh, it's not even a question, now,
come on. All the numbers are in favor of them
being better without Kevin Durant they score more points, they
(44:39):
win by or Hire March in the playoffs. In these playoffs,
they were winning by four points a game with Kevin Durant.
They're winning by ten points a game now without him.
Their shooting percentages Hire, they're three point shooting percentages Hire.
They're scoring more points per game. And remember they went
seven and four with k D in the first and
(45:02):
part of the second round. Seoretically, at least their faith
they have faced stronger teams in the late in the
second round still Houston, and in the conference finals. Supposedly
the deeper you go, the more difficult it's supposed to be.
So against more difficult opposition, they've gone five, five or
(45:22):
four and old without KD. The only problem I have
is in the finals is not even close to difference.
And that's what we'll see. How it's not close. How
the Warriors was seven and six with without KD in
the finals and eight and one with KD. I'm just
gonna I'm just gonna wait and see, because because because
I'm not saying they're better, I'm not. I'm just saying,
(45:44):
if Steph can pull us off, it changes the narrative
for me. If step can pull it off his narrative.
To me, it remains what I've been saying, which is
will wait, It'll never be to get mold what the
greatest mirage of if he loses, if they if they're
losing the finals, you're gonna Chuch Stuff the only player
that will have lost in the finals. The only time.
(46:04):
It'll be on Stuff. I'm just telling it'll be on him.
It'll be on the team. But no, I don't want
to get that. But to say he's a mirage still
won't be fair. They get swept in the finals, that's ridiculous.
The dude is awesome. But anyway back to KD k
and let me say this final thing. Rob on that note,
(46:25):
they don't have to be better without KD. They just
have to still be the best team in the world
without KD. And I called this his worst nightmare coming
through because for three years Kevin Durant has heard people
belittle him for going to the Warriors. His own GM.
(46:48):
Bob Myers at the parade last year joked about what
Steff's been here since way way back, and KD just
got here. It was a joke, but we know how
sensitive KD is him most sensitive of all time. Walt
Clyde Fraser, another top fifty player of all time, said
there's an asterisk in his mind next to Kd's greatness.
(47:10):
His own teammate, Draymond Greene went off on him in
November and said, we don't need you leave, and I've
talked to where we had in this cancer. His former teammate,
who knows, as everybody does, how great KD is, he
said on this very show that around the league, most people,
(47:31):
most players look a little side eyed at those championships
as great as it can. But I don't buy into
that from this standpoint. I'm just I'm not saying that,
but I'm just saying I don't buy into people telling
him if he won, came on the team and didn't
do anything and they won the championships and stuff, was
the MVP and he was a role he would basically
(47:52):
became a Chris Bosh, then maybe I could buy I
don't know, but I can you know what I'm saying
that because Gosh isn't KD. Okay, But but this guy
went and won the MVP. In the finals, they swept
Lebron and they beat them to beat them twice for
the one very easy piece of cake. I just can't
look at people and take them seriously when they act
(48:13):
like KD didn't do anything, well, just showed up, but
that he still wagon to get I get it what
you get. Get Get that about joining the team that
had already wont and all that. But I'm just saying
that act like he didn't do anything is misguided. That's
all I'm he is clearly their best Okay, That's that's
all I'm telling nobody. I don't I haven't heard anybody
(48:34):
say he's not their best player. And he was the
legitimate finals MVP, no doubt about the final, no doubt.
And Steph was great too, so that that's where see,
you go overboard. But he won't great enough. He was
great enough they won the two championship, but he Steph
wasn't great enough. He was great enough. See, I can't
get done. I'm giving See I'm objective on this show.
(48:55):
Object you're not if you say see average, I just
gave me a nine eight that wasn't great enough. I
disagree with you. I'm not object No, you're not looking
at the fact get staffs from the look at my
history from twenty seventeen. You're not objective. I went to
Columbia journalism. I don't care if you went to if
(49:18):
you created journalism, all right, get staffs numbers from the
twenty seventeen finals. It was almost a triple double on
forty nine. That wasn't great. I know what to Spidey,
what he did. Nobody voted for him for at five
he was great. Kevin Durand was greater. That's I have
no problem saying that. But to sit here and act
(49:40):
like Kevin Durand was the only player great. He averaged
twenty seven, eight and nine. Come on, man, how many turnovers?
How many? I mean? So anyway, I said, here's the
thing with k D. For all those people who have
(50:00):
who diminished him or who belittled him, who crushed him,
including you, for going to a championship team that won
seventy three games the next year, this, this team winning
the championship without him will validate in those people's minds.
I won't diminish him, And it does diminish it a
(50:23):
little needed. And if this would say you're not needed
if they lose, and what would that do to him? Say,
Steph already gets to the finals and it shows that
he led a team to two championships, A great team
to two championships, because I think that's going to be
the narrative after they lose the final. It'll it'll that's
the thing. If they lose without him, it will boost
(50:45):
his two championships. But let me qualify this. He is
a champion, no, I guess, Okay, this is right. He
is a champions legitimate. I got that. But if they
lose without him, it will lift those championships up right
a little. They'll mean a little more. If they win
(51:06):
without him, they'll mean a little less. Because that's fair.
That's fair, because you'll look at it if they lose,
say they lose, you'll say Steph choked down the three
to one that they were up right, step was, but
I would and then't think it was choking. He choked
it down. Lebrin took it and then and then the
other one that they won was when uh, Kyrie and
Love were hurt. I'm just saying, no, right right, that's
(51:28):
the way it could be. Yeah, they'll never be viewed
that's great, great without him, a right right, no question,
no question. That team that started out right where you
thought after they won the seventy three had they won,
they were up three to one. Ever since then, they've
had Kad, they've had Katie and it's gone. Well, that's right,
But that is that's one of those things that I
(51:49):
don't I look at them now and I don't think
that you ever look at them as as as one
of the greatest. Well, if they win it, you will.
And that's at remains to be saying they're not gonna lose.
Trust trust Oh, you already know that they're gonna win.
But anyway, k D responded to me on Twitter. I
called him worst nightmare? Of course, Rob g What did
he say on Twitter? He replied, I see a little
(52:11):
exaggeration there, buddy, my worst nightmare. You sure that this
is the worst they could get? And that's true, of course,
of course there are things that can happen that are
way worse. But it was a figure of speech. You
know what I'm saying, Rob, No, I guess the figures,
of course, I mean off the court, even on the court.
(52:33):
Their worst things that could happen, you know, serious career
threatening injury, a season threatening, you know, and it's but
it's a hard speech. It's hard to paint a picture
for a guy who's making that kind of loot. Already
won two championships, two MVPs. Beginning life is pretty good, right,
So I get that. So he literally speaking, he's right,
(52:55):
but people know what I mean as a basketball player,
as in all time grade with legacy ramifications. This is
a nightmare scenario if they win without him, with all
the things that have gone on. So KD responded, and
that's not the first KD. And I've gone back and
(53:17):
forth on DMS and direct messages and all that stuff.
When when he didn't liked something, I say, how he
liked the Can I do this week too? Right? Can
I say this? So before you go yeah, the reason?
And I'm gonna say this, and I'm with all seriousness.
There was an editor at the Detroit News who once
hit me up, call me up because somebody sent in
(53:39):
a bad email about a column that I wrote. And
so I was like, okay, So he's he's talking to
me telling me about this email, and I said, I
said okay. I said, I wish I could take this
seriously from you, but I can't. This means nothing coming
from you because you've never sent me, you've never called
me when someone wrote something nice about me. For you
(54:02):
to call me now because somebody said something negative negates
what you say. And I say the same thing about
Katie to you. Has Katie ever hit you up with
something positive that you said about him, Chris. That's why
this means nothing. It can't be a one way street.
If he would have said to you, Chris, I saw
you today, your point was on point. Nobody's ever said
(54:24):
that about me. I thought that was you. See what
I'm saying. You can't just hit me up because you're
not only negative about him, you said good things about
him as well. For somebody not to give you compliments,
you just can't take negative feedback. And it's a good past.
I'm telling you out there in the world, if somebody
doesn't have anything nice to say about you when you
(54:44):
do something good, do not listen to their criticism. It's
not a one way stream. I hadn't thought about that.
That's a great point. I hadn't thought about that. He's
never done that, and that that negates it. Yeah, I
hadn't thought about that. And I have no problem with
players coming at us because look that's what we do.
(55:05):
We are that in locker rooms and everything. I have
no problem with a player clapping back, you know. And
I look, I don't think Kyde should be clapping back
at random fans who might have a hundred followers. But
I have no problem with him clapping back at the
media because he feels like that's what we do with him.
(55:27):
That's fine. So this is no problem. But your point
is good. If he would, if he would come at
me with, like you said, with some positive things too,
once in a while, it would resonate a little more
because it's a this is just like your isolated pick
something out you didn't like and whatever. I've told guys
that before, I said. And when I told my editor that,
(55:49):
oh no, I don't mean it like that, I said, no,
you do mean it like that, because you can't tell me.
I've been here nine years. Nobody's ever sent you a
nice about my column. So how come you've never called
me on that? Right? Oh well, could you don't have
an answer? It's true? Now have an answer, all right?

(56:57):
and the Warriors. Can they win the tie without him?
It's a Magic City Monday. One of the most compelling
questions out there. Just a foot in Magic City, Magic
City Monday and the magic magic Man Monday. Magic made
him Monday. Well that that would be good. Magic may him?
All right, let's get to the cars eight seven, seven
(57:17):
ninety nine on Fox Jabril in Atlanta. You're on with
the out come, Yo, what's happened? Kat? Cry? When they
win without him? You know, Raymond him? And if they
don't win, I can't wait for you. I want you
to call back when they don't win, and then you'll
be like, oh, would you expect that? FCAD. I mean,
(57:40):
this is the thing that kills me. Everybody's so premature
because they beat a terrible Rockets team and a terrible
stop it, say a terrible say terrible you you invalidate
terrible stop it. They couldn't wait very well, they couldn't
horrible that team. I don't trust them all. I appreciate
(58:01):
the call. Rod and Texas, You're on the cover of
Fox Sports Radio. What's up? Rod? Hey, Hey, what's up? Fellas?
Like my third time getting in love the show Man?
Thank you? And I want to feed on where Ross
said about somebody saying something good about you and you
don't listen to them if they never did, and if
they say something bad, don't listen. I'm like that point.
(58:23):
So y'all remember Draymond Green baged this man to come
to the team, and then he called them the B
word and said, we did it before you, right right,
So why did you back this name to come to
your team? Thank you? It's not a nightmare. It's like
a like, not a not a good thing, because they
definitely need him. But what if they win it? If
(58:44):
they win it without him, it doesn't demandish totally. What's happened. Yeah,
they don't diminish, but it looks like they don't need
you if they win it without you. And if they
didn't need him before, they want They begged him, Steff
even getting up his lunch money for him to call.
(59:07):
But Rob we this is the truth. If they lose
without him, it boosts those two championships a little bit.
They're legitimate regardless, but if they win it without him,
it diminishes them slightly. I just want to see the
narrative when they lose. That's all what you're gonna do.
If they win nothing, I'll do what I did. Tom.
(59:27):
You're gonna give stefish see you in that category. Like
you said, Tom Brady's looking at you like you looking
at your former editor. No, I'm not. You don't give
me props. Robed the quate quarterback, you know what you
want to pull me to. You said, he's the goal.
He's not the Joe Monte going on, Joe Monte, Mike
and North Kakilaki. You're in the yad couple of Fox
(59:49):
Sports Carolina. For those who speak English, Yes, doing great, Mike, Hey, Mike,
you gotta turn your radio down we can hear our
songs on the Okay, Kevin Durant to sleep easier because
he helped them put their worst nightmare await Lebron James
and Kyrie Irbert because they couldn't do nothing with Lebron
(01:00:12):
when they they barely won the first one with Lebron
by himself, and they saw Lebron six games? Is that barely?
They won three straights? They only they won the last
three games. They won the first one because Kyrie got
hurt and they still couldn't start Lebron only beat him
(01:00:32):
in six games, won four the last five. How's that barely?
He put Lebron the rest for them for good. That's
why I give you that. I do agree with that.
Like I think, if Kd's not there, that Cleveland State
Series you're talking, that's bird magic type rival. No, I
got it, and I you know, who knows who would
have won the two? Maybe they would have split. You know.
(01:00:54):
Let's go to Jared in Australia. Yo, Jared, we are
huge down Under. We love the down Thank j Jered.
Where are you calling from in Australia? Melbourne? Melbourne? Okay?
Great to hear from you. Good to hear guys. Um, look, uh,
I think yeah, I think because because the Warriors did
it without Duran before, Um, it'll just show that they
(01:01:15):
can do it again. Um if he's if he's not
going to be there, they win without him. Um. Not
really sort of a similar sport. Um, it's sort of
like you know how the Patriots one without Gronkowski, I mean,
Gronkowsi is as great as he was. They could win
with or without him. I mean it's I know it's
not really a similar but I know what you mean, right,
but you know what I mean, you get the point. Yeah, yeah,
(01:01:36):
all right, good, thank you, Jed, and thanks for the
support down under. Let's go to Lewis in Santa Monica.
Santa Monica, what's up? Yeah, what's up? Guys? Are you
doing a good listen? I think it'd be remembered, but
I don't think it is. Tarnis his legacy, But they're
only gonna win the title if they faced Toronto without him.
I don't see them having an answer for for the
(01:01:58):
Greek freak Um without Kevin Durant, I would all of
their bigs will dominate, All of their bigs will dominate
that series. Without Kadi there Uh, it's gonna I think
Milwaukee would be tough for them. For Chris Scott Golden State, Well,
I got Golden State, Milwaukee slowing on them. That doesn't
(01:02:20):
mean he's just got the championships because he's MVP. You
just gotta stuff light skinning. No, no, no, Golden State.
I'm watching. I'm critiquing what I'm watching. I'm not coming
in with a preconceived notion you're talking about you're just
gonna hate on the Warriors no matter what. No, I'm
thinking win tonight, my shutout. I pick you would hate
on the war But before the season I picked him
(01:02:41):
to win the championship to why I hate here? But
that was with KD Jamale. You couldn't give the light
Skinned Brothers problem, Jamil. This is all about Jamil and Indianapa.
Join the couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Jamial? Hey?
How you doing a great? Hey? I'll listen you all
all the time. Thank you, brothers. Shain't it? Yeah? I
(01:03:01):
agree with Rob on this one. And I was gonna say,
if people want to put an Ashes by Kevin Durant
two titles, then why only put ashes by Lebron three titles?
You mean too, if you're talking about talking about the
two in Miami, right, Yeah, the one in Cleveland wasn't. Yeah,
I mean, if you're gonna say that, I agree. I mean, well,
I will say this, as good as Wade and Bosh were,
(01:03:27):
they're not winning the championship without Lebron and Lebron's we're
not winning champions He did win one Withever, but he
had a star. You gotta star. Who hasn't had a star? No,
I'm just saying, yeah, I figured, but that was a
mic job. No, it wasn't. Don't do it, Sam, Sam,
Do not Sam. Just thank you Sam. We homeboys, man.
(01:03:49):
That's I was saying. You know what, Sam, I'm on
that odd couple of hoodie order for you. I'm gonna cancel,
all right. The Lakers are arguably the biggest story of
these playoffs, and they aren't even playing Bleacher Reports. Howard
Beck will explain next, but first let's get to Brian
Finley for the Latest in sports. Brian, Hey, what's going
on guys yet? Coming up at the top of the hour,
(01:04:11):
the Warriors have a sweep on their minds against the
Blazers Golden States. Andre Igodala will rest with a calf injury,
third quarters, ailing Portland and back to back games now
to an embarrassing degree, the Lakers wish they had the
playoffs to worry about. Instead, they're riddled with internal turmoil.
Would make for a good remake of the movie Mean
Girls X. Team president Magic Johnson called out general manager
(01:04:34):
Rob Polinka on National TV today, claiming Plinkott talked badly
behind his back. Plinkott called the comments quote saddening and disheartening,
and all the while, here's Frank Vogel and he gets
sent to the end of the bench in the news
cycle as he got introduced as the team's head coach
today and he had a chance to talk about what
this means to him. There's going to be a lot
of talk of getting our team back into the playoffs
(01:04:57):
and what the Lakers represent in terms of a tradition
of competing for championships. Those are end result things, Okay,
we are going to be focused on the work. Defensive
tackle Gerald McCoy is out of work, the Bucks reportedly
releasing him. They were not thrilled about having to pay
him the thirteen million he was due next season. Odell
Beckham Junior is already calling McCoy to come to Cleveland,
(01:05:18):
and according to several reports and Dominican Sue might be
on his way to Tampa Bay. The San Jose Sharks

we go way back with, one of the best NBA
insiders in the business. He's a senior writer for Bleacher
Report and also the host of the Full forty eight podcast,
longtime Lakers beat writer for a while, as well as
(01:06:47):
Howard Beck. Howard Howward Man, what's up, gentlemen, good evening,
how are you. We're great? Great to have you on.
Just I mean, look what you make of today from
Magic Johnson on television. Let's just start with that. Uh
we got three hours or so unbelievable it was. I've
never seen anything like it, to be honest, Howard, Well, Rob,
(01:07:08):
We've never seen anything like it except that time that
Magic resigned on National Right. We've never seen anything like
that either. So you know, every time Magic pops in
front of a camera and starts talking, he makes some
kind of weird NBA history lately. You know what's funny
is if he was this good on his TV show
would still be on. It's that, you know, that's a
(01:07:31):
really great point. Is this? This is better than the
Magic Hour ever was? Yea, And the Lakers probably just
hope it ends sooner gets canceled as quickly. How much
does this hurt them their free agency chances? Does it?
Because obviously it makes the organization and it makes while
Polink could be the worst guy in the world who
wants to come be work for GM like this, Yeah,
(01:07:54):
listen the extent of the damage, Chris, I don't think
we can We can know yet, will know. The moment
of truths will come in July when they either get
guys or don't, and we'll hear the rumblings by then
whether their decisions not to come had to do with
all of this, or whether it was just, hey, you
know what, I want to do my own thing, or
I want to go to the Clippers, or I want
(01:08:14):
to go to the Nets, I want to go to
the Knicks or wherever guys may go. Will it have
to do with the infighting and the dysfunction. Will it
have to do with Rob Pelinka's reputation, which, by the way,
wasn't that great even before Magic out that that was
already the case. Will it have to do with Genie's
Genie busses, seeming lack of organizational control, or the lack
of vision. I mean, all of these things could come
(01:08:37):
into play. And I don't think we'll know the answer
to that question for a while yet, but I will
say this is certainly all damaging. And I want to
make a quick point here about this because one of
the things when people, you know, ask me about the
current situation, to say, well, you know, you cover the
Lakers for seven years in Shack and Kobe were fighting,
and you know Lakers, they've always been about drama and dysfunction.
(01:08:57):
And what I would like to tell people now, to
make very very clear, is what's happening now has no analogy,
is not in the least bit analogous to what was
going on in the Shack and Kobe era. Shaq and
Kobe had feuds, we know this. They had ego issues,
they had worked ethic issues, they had all kinds of
issues with each other, and they fought. They won three
(01:09:17):
championships anyway, they went to finals four out of their
last five years together. And there were other there was
palace intrigue at times, right like Phil Jackson and Jerry
West did not get along until Jerry West resigned. Jerry
West had problems with Phil Jackson and Genie Buss dating
while Jerry was still there was part of what you know,
drove him away, not all of it, but part of it.
(01:09:38):
There was tension. There was tension between Jerry West and
Jerry Buss at times. So there's always been something, but
not like this. You never before had the kind of
instability that's been created by this situation by Magic and
Rob Polinka not being qualified frankly to do these jobs
in the first place, and then Magic resigning and Rob
(01:09:58):
Polinka being elevated, this whole coach search. This is the
during the Shack and Kobe are No matter what else
was going wrong, you always had a certain amount of
confidence that the Lakers were stable, knew what they were doing,
had solid leadership, and we're a place that guys wanted
to go. Caromelone, Gary Payton taking pay cuts, massive pay
cuts to play there in two thousand and three. What's
(01:10:20):
happening now is a completely different phenomenon. It is destabilizing,
and it is far worse than any other Laker drama
that people could think about. Howard Beck of Bleacher Report
joining the eye couple, Howard, I'm not defending the Lakers
organization and Jeanie Bust because I'd say she wus the
Lakers like a mom and pop store. Everybody's related, everybody's
(01:10:43):
friendly and friends, family friends, and the rambuses and Polinka
because he's Kobe's former agent, and even you know when
she hired Magic because that was her dad's one of
her dad's best friends. All that. But in this case,
what Magic did today, and I'm dead serious, is if
I'm the Lakers, I pushed back from Magic Johnson because
(01:11:04):
of the damage he did, and and I'm serious, I
would I would say he would be banned from any
kind of Laker involvement. I'm talking about anything. Uh And
definitely I saw the Yankees do it to Reggie Jackson
for stuff that he said about a Rod and you know,
beating up on some Yankee players, and I think what
Magic did today equals that. I just think he really
(01:11:24):
hurt the organization and I wouldn't want him around right now.
Totally get where you're coming from that, Rob, And I
think that there's, you know, a case to be made
there that they need some distance, but not forever. Rep Magic,
but Magic and Genie refer to each other basically as siblings.
They that's that's how close they are. And Ganie has
(01:11:45):
her entire adult life has known Magic Johnson. I mean
he arrived, uh, you know, at a time when she
was what, you know, eighteen nineteen years old. They've known
each other forever, and you know, siblings have their their fights,
and they they've still you know, are are bonded. And
in their case, I think that they are. And you know,
I don't. I don't think anything to be gained by
(01:12:05):
trying to throw Magic Johnson out of the Laker kingdom.
You know, I do think that, you know, Genie and
Magic to the extent that they're still talking, and I
think they probably are. You know, they need to at
least come to some sort of agreement about how they're
handling what's transpired. And maybe Magic just needed to get
all this stuff off of his chest about Polenka and
everything else, and maybe this is the last ll hear
(01:12:27):
of it anyway, But he's still talking like a guy
who was part of the recruiting party. This was the
exact opposite of recruiting, right, I agree, And it is strange,
but listen, having watched the Knicks in my own backyard,
botch relations with their former players for many, many years.
(01:12:47):
I don't think the Lakers or anybody else should try
to go down a path where you're actually just you know,
you know, casting guys out. Howard you when you covered
the Lakers, Genie was running the business side, and I
mean had a tremendous reputation. Are you surprised, I mean,
she seems to really be bumbling as the owner in
dealing with the basketball side of things. Are you surprised
(01:13:09):
at the way things have gone and what appears to
be a lot of ineptitude. I am surprised. It's I'll
say this just this is not in her defense. This
is just a general observation I would make about NBA
owners and especially new NBA owners, and Genie falls in
that category. Even though she's been around the game for
her entire adult life. She's only been in charge solely
(01:13:32):
for the last couple of years. But whether it's her,
whether it's vek Renadiva and Sacramento, whether it's Dan Gilbert
who is no longer that new but but you know
he's new ish. We've seen him go through the learning curve.
Whether it's Mark Cuban even coming along in two thousand,
it's you know, he's been you know, in that role
for twenty years almost now. They all make certain mistakes,
and there's certain common ones. And I think the toughest
(01:13:53):
thing an owner has to do in this league, and
I imagine other leagues too, but in the NBA, the
toughest thing you have to do is you're out who
to hire to run basketball because you, the owner, don't
know anything about the game. You might think you do,
and some of them believe they know more than others.
You don't. You got to find somebody that you trust
and who knows basketball. And the problem what happens is
(01:14:15):
instead owners reach for the person who they know the
best or trust the most. So Gene reaches for Magic,
and vvek Rennadive reaches for Vlade Divats and on and on.
You see this constantly, and you know, Geenie needs to
get out of her comfort zone here and just hire
somebody who actually has experience in the role. And she
had that chance when Magic stepped down, and instead she
(01:14:37):
doubled down and stuck with Rob Polinka empowered him all
that much more. And they've you know, their front office,
frankly is understaffed, and they don't have you know, somebody
who's a real season professional who and they they had
their chances too. They could have gone out and grabbed
David Griffin before the Pelican side. Hope they did. Howard,
what do you think of a Kd's tweet push it
(01:14:57):
back at Chris BUSSA? Did you see that? How surprised
were you that Katie didn't use his burner account? You
know it was it was interesting because look, I mean,
we've seen Durant do this before. It's usually to to
clap back of people who are like literally, you know,
set something on Twitter, on Instagram or whatever, twenty five
(01:15:18):
followers in their mother's basement. Usually, yeah, listen, at least
he's he's throwing a bigger targets, you know, Chris, he
usually comes at me privately in a DM or something
like that. But you know, kay D, it's all good.
You know, what what do you do? You? Um? What
are you making this whole situation with him? I think
(01:15:40):
the more they win, uh, they're gonna be more and
more patient with him. And it like if they were
to keep winning, maybe win the next game tonight and
the first two games of the finals. I think it's
less likely that he comes back this season, possibly And look,
Chris to your comments earlier that set him up in
(01:16:01):
the first place. I Katie may not want to admit
to it, and I don't blame him, but I think
there is a germ of truth in that. No matter
who you're talking about, none of us want to believe
that we are that easily disposable, right right, and and
he is too. And look, I have no doubt in
my mind that Kevin Durant is thrilled that his team
(01:16:22):
is still winning, that they're still in play to make
the finals and win a championship, and that he can
get a third straight title. And I'm sure it's killing
him not to play, regardless of any other narrative that
surrounds it. But the idea that people are now throwing
out while they're thirty and one or whatever the number
is without him now and saying and throwing it up
as proof that that he's extraneous, which I don't agree with.
(01:16:45):
I think he, you know, has been essential to them
at you know, in important moments, especially in the finals,
no doubt about it. And he's been the Finals MVP
both those years for a reason. So I don't blame
him if he did feel some of that, and he
may not want to admit it that maybe he doesn't
even admitted to think it consciously. But it's hard. I
(01:17:05):
think it's got to be. It's harder to see that,
no question. All right. It's Howard be always does a
great job for the Bleacher Report. Check him out as
the host of the Full forty eight podcast as well,

will say this. Let's put the big Jay journalists to
the test. Its sources say, Christy, you just yawned during
magic Stick. I don't think. I don't think Rob's friend
Fitty Sands gonna appreciate it. Yes, what are you doing?
Oh yeah, you know Fitty? You know Fitty. That's right
(01:18:30):
from Jamaica. Queens like to say fitty. You just say naturally,
just say fifty cents. You know what his name was
before he met me? What he heard forty five cents?
And then I loaned him a nickel? All right, go ahead, Rob,
that was good. I don't care what you say. Thank you,
Thank you Jay, the our couple of Fox More Raider.

One hundred and seven years of combined journalism experience. Man,
Now I think I'm out. Man, Man, I don't like
this tandem now to Robs against me. All of these
stories sound a little bit rear. They all sounded a
little bit fake. So you guys got to decide which
(01:19:12):
sources are good and which sources are bad. So let's
get right to it. My sources say that a rare
Mike Trout rookie card was found inside a piano that
was sold for over thirty thousand dollars at auction last week. Robin,
my source is good the card was sold for thirty
thous Yes, I'm gonna say that that's true. Considering what
(01:19:34):
he keeps doing stats the big contract, having a Mike
Trout card, he could be the greatest player of all time.
I'm gonna say, yes, that's true. I'm gonna say you
sit on the bed of lies. I think that's a
little high for even though as great as he is
for right now, that's a little high this early. Who's
the base by expert. That's all I got to say,
(01:19:55):
Mike drop whatever, don't do it. I will stop doing that.
Boy man, you better get somebody here from Motio. You
get that story from Rob It was it was Babe
Ruth and it sold for one hundred and thirty thousand.
Oh wow, okay. Story number two. My sources say that
someone took a picture from across the street of a
(01:20:15):
rod dropping a deuce inside of his apartment and posted
it on Twitter, stopping Chris source is good. Wow, that's
so vile. I'm gonna say no, I think we would
have heard more about that. I think that's true. O dag.
I let him back in. But how did he know
he's dropping a deuce? It's through his window, you could
(01:20:38):
see it. Maybe he wouldn't he close the curtains a ride.
Maybe he was your name sitting down, he was tired.
Story they hear the water splashing sound effects. Story number three.
People are gross radio stationing with Scots and has decided
to ban radio play of all Drake songs while the
(01:20:59):
Bucks are face seen the raptors in these playoffs. Rob
my source is good. That's gotta be true. That's such
a hokey radio thing. We're not gonna play. I think
we're losing in the ship because I do agree with that,
all right, Rob Gee, when you become a producer a
program director, you'll do that absolutely. Two games a piece here,
(01:21:23):
the couple sources say Fox Sports Radio Story number four.
My sources say that Philadelphia icon Will Smith one hop
the first pitch at the Phillies game last week and
got booed by the home fans. Chris, I, my source
is good. I think that is false. I think it's
false too. It wasn't him, it was Bruce Willis, Bruce
(01:21:44):
will Man, you gotta get some stuff. Now you're slipping,
rob Gee, you're slipping. All right. Here's a here's a
tough one right here. I don't even guys know this
version that was? Was that a Martin? Uh? That was yeah,
Martin Weiss. They might have had a right. My sources
say that New York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimo rolled his
(01:22:07):
ankle sprinting the first base after a walk over the
weekend had to be pulled from the game. Robin, My
source is good, that's true. I think that's false. You
sit on a throne up. Yeah, boy, who was I
take the title back? You're talking about Sespis who didn't
Nobuddy sprints the first base and rolls their ankles? You
(01:22:28):
should know that, mister Bati Iowa Sam is my boy,

guys who won three finals MVP every time they won
a championship. What they've been down to they've been down
the guy that won two all right, No, but now
they got they are missing Andre wood Dollar tonight official
And that makes sense to me because why I would

if you can get plenty of cushion to play with
because he said he we just had a guest to
him that he was gonna play. Yeah, and I think
if he had to he probably could. But let him
rest man. But anyway, that'll be coming up in fourteen
fifteen minutes. But you are on with the Eye Couple
for now. And the big news of the day, Magic
Johnson went on ESPN's first take and just went ballistic
(01:24:16):
on Rob Polinka, the GM of the Lakers, and Magic
said that Rob Polinka backstabbed him and that's why he
stepped down as the president of the Lakers. At one
point during it, he called Rob Polinka, Judas, didn't he
just kid? Uh? Yeah, I didn't hear that one, but
(01:24:38):
he really went off on him. But Rob, g let's
play a little little bit of sound from Magic's talking today.
People around the Laker office was telling me Rob was
saying things and Pa Rob Polinka, and I didn't like
those things being said behind my back. Do I wasn't
in the office enough and so on and on. So
I started getting calls from my friends outside of basketball
(01:25:00):
saying those things now were said to them outside of
basketball now, not just in the Laker office anymore. Now
it's in the media and song He's a people you
trust exactly, And people got to remember something. Being in
this business fold forty years, I got allies, I got
friends everywhere, all right, And so that is a big
(01:25:24):
problem for the Lakers. They already had an image problem
because people are looking at the way they've done things
this year and especially since Magic Johnson stepped down about
a month ago, and they just look like they're winging it,
like they're flying by the seat of their pants. And
Rob Polinka, who I always had a good relationship with
(01:25:46):
when I dealt with him as an agent, and you
didn't have any issues. No, I never had any issues
with Rob. I liked him. I thought he was a
nice guy and he was a good agent. He had
Kobe James body. But they don't trust him, and that
there are a lot of people around them, not everybody,
but a lot of them around the league say they
(01:26:07):
don't trust him, that he lies all the time, and
that image, that reputation. Magic just validated it, and that
is going to hurt the Lakers as they recruit these
free agents. Ramona Shelburne has uh from ESPN has tweeted
out a few things recently, kind of an update or
(01:26:27):
the Lakers, rob Gie, why don't you read the relevant tweets? Yeah,
this is actually a tweet stepping from an interview she
did earlier today on ESPN where she was asked about
the Magic Johnson situation and whether or not the front
office knew what he was gonna say. I'm first taken
this is what she said. Quote. They ringing. Polinka and
(01:26:47):
Jeanie Buss asked the Magic several times in phone calls
and private dinners, flat out asked him, is there anything
we should know about you stepping down? What was that
tweet about? On April t He fits saying, quote, the
truth will come out? Yes, what's the truth? He never
told them anything said, He just waited to unveil it
(01:27:08):
all on first take. Well, Magic has been talking and
this has been reported and I've been told it as well.
He's been talking to Polinka somewhat regularly since he stepped down.
It's certainly Jeannie and Polinka said today they spoke two
days ago, and obviously Magic gave him no indication. Why
didn't Magics have that conversation with Polinka before he went
(01:27:29):
on the show today. No, that's that's that's all right,
because if I got an issue, we could talk about it,
and then you don't know what's coming up. You and I,
You and I are boys, They weren't. No, I know,
right right, But but I will tell you one hand.
I I applaud Magic for just being like, look, dude
was doing me dirty, and I'm man enough to get
(01:27:50):
up here and say it. On the other hand, it
definitely didn't help the Lakers when it comes to recruiting
for well, and and that's my issue is that Magic
kids say, well, I'm gonna help them crewed and I
love the Lakers and all that. He did some major
damage today. He betrayed the organization. No matter what you
rob Pelinka can come and go. Genie Buss as the owner,
(01:28:12):
now I get it, she's in control. But if you
really love the organization and really want to help it,
what he did today was not helping. He heard it severely.
And because of that, I'm serious when I say this.
If I'm the Lakers Magic Johnson from here on now,
not and not not forever, but indefinitely, he's posida non grata.
(01:28:33):
You can't do we don't want magic, we don't want
magic around. Magic is not going to be invited to
any events. I mean, this is magic, I understand. But
he's not bigger than the organization. Yes, I dude, nobody's
bigger than the organization. Now, he has not done as
much damage as he's done today. He has not done
any more damage than Genie bust his crew and he
(01:28:56):
don't in the last month or two known the team
and I'm just telling you the rambases or Polinka. If
I was the owner, if I was Genie Bust and
I'm serious, I would go out there myself with a
blanket and tape a wet blanket and I cover up
his statue and I'd say Magic for right now is
pasada non grad? I love using this vague phrase right now,
(01:29:20):
right now? How long the last time you use that
phrase when when you were saying James Harden was the
best player in the world. How long was right now
for James Harden? That was three months? So maybe Magic.
All I would say is Magic, you know what, don't
call here, We're not don't answer Magic's phone calls or Texas.
You know, we're done with you for right now. We're
(01:29:43):
furious about what you did today on national television where
you heard our organization. You probably gonna stop anybody from
one to ever called Rob Polink or have any dealings
with them, which is gonna be hard for us because
he's our guy. So I would do that, and I
know people say you can't do that to a star,
The New York Star, the New the Former Star, Alegend Superstar,
(01:30:05):
New Freaking Yankees did it to a legend. And Reggie
Jackson when he went out and ripped a Rod and
some other Yankees about steroid use, they said, you know what,
we know you're a special scout. We know you're an
ambassador for the Yankes. You know what. You you you're
poshata non gratta. Don't come around the house that Ruth built.
(01:30:26):
How long? Definitely, I know, maybe six months or a
year or something. But but he wasn't around. And you
know what, eventually you're gonna welcome him on back because
he's because he's a legend. But he welcome him back.
Reggie Jackson is a legend. I'm not going to belittle
what Reggie Jackson was, but I think even you have
to admit Rob One, he is not Magic Johnson. Maggie
(01:30:49):
Johnson one of the top five players of all time.
Magic Johnson and Larry Bird honestly may have saved the
NBA in the eighties. I understood, cannot band Magic Johnson.
And here's the other thing. If he does Reggie Jackson.
As great as Reggie Jackson was, Reggie had just, you know,
(01:31:09):
voluntarily kind of taken himself out of the spotlight in
the decades following his retirement, Magic has never done it.
Magic is still still all up in the spotlight, So
if you banned him, it would have major ramifications. You
think players are looking at the Lakers now a skance?
I think I use that right. Check that out, Rogie,
(01:31:30):
A skance. You don't think they would be looking if
they banned Magic freaking Johnson. You don't think players would
be like, oh no, no, they can do that to Magic. No,
I definitely ain't going I totally disagree because what we're
about to watch, what's gonna happen in New York where
they threw Charles Elkley out of the build out Charles Oakley,
(01:31:54):
but he's a fan favorite in New York. Understand how
the Magic Johnson? I'm saying k D. Of course I
watched Magic. I'm talking about k D and maybe Kyrie
are talking about coming to join the Knicks. And they
threw Charles Oakley out of the garden like a rag doll,
and they humiliated a guy who gave his all for
(01:32:15):
an organization. They have the worst owner ever, and these
guys are not gonna sign with the Knicks, so forget
about that and they move on. That's my first of all,
magic gonna be the reason why. Let's see if they
signed with the Knicks number one. I'm saying that, No,
I am hearing that players are looking at the owner.
Now I don't know, I'm not. I tend to be
with you that k D and Kyrie will go there.
(01:32:36):
But dudes are looking at James Dolan and saying, compare
him to Steve Ballmer I c w P owners in Brooklyn,
they say they believe that they have definitely KAD isn't well.
I tend to agree with that too, But I'm saying,
let's see it happen first, and then Charles Oakley is
not Magic Johnson a favor. But here's the other part.
(01:32:58):
I want to say this. When this whole story broke,
I knew what had happened, and Magic today revealed that
what went down and really what when he realized he
had no power with the organization. Let's take a listen
to is this a microwave? Take Chris and listen, because
because you guessed I would spotting on it wasn't a guess.
(01:33:18):
This is my time to go COLDI of the Outside
the Metal's Microwave take with the on cover of Genie
Buss is the biggest Luke Walton fan. And this to me,
when you don't let your GM do what you need
to do, you know what I mean, and make a decision,
(01:33:40):
that's the only reason you would step down. That's why
you would step down. For no other reason, Chris, Why
a power struggle with the old wasn't for Magic when
he goes to Genie and saying, I'm making a coaching
change for next year, as she says, no, you're not.
You're not getting with it, Luke, He's not gonna be
blamed for this. There were so many Jews, Lebron didn't
(01:34:00):
do this, blah blah blah blah blah. And you know what.
And Magic talked about it when he mentioned was that
a guy's named Tim Tim Harris we all of a
sudden making decisions. And he said, I realized I didn't
have power. Didn't he say it out of his own mouth?
And I'll tell you that that'll make you quit like
lickety split, like the way he did, because it's so abrupt, Chris.
(01:34:23):
When you don't go back to Genie butter supposed to
your sister, and you don't say, hey, Genie, you know
what I just figured I got so many other things
to do. I would love to help you, this just
isn't working out. Let's have a press conference. I'll bow
out gracefully. You'll save face. I'll save face, and I'll
go off into the sunset and everybody still love magic. Right.
How do you think this is going to affect him
(01:34:44):
in free agency? Like? Do you think this will deter
players from going in? I mean, think any anyway. I
think he made the organization look even worse. And Rob
Pelinka as a guy who's now a y a guy
that people don't want to be around. Like, I really
believe that he's really put them out there because you
(01:35:06):
know what, you never hear that from somebody's mouth, I
mean on television, batically saying this guy's a weasel, this
guy's a bad guy. I couldn't trust him. Well, here's
the thing about players, they're fairly sophisticated. You know, when
they choose a place to go, a lot of times
they're looking at the organization, the infrastructure, the front office,
(01:35:28):
and do they believe it's a front office you can trust,
and it's a front office that will build a great
team around you to try to win championships and their
agents also remember age. As you know, Rob agents are
influencing players. And if agents feel that way about Rob Pelinka. Look,
money talks in the NBA, and if the Lakers are
(01:35:50):
offering more money, then they will get the guys. But
if all things being equal, right, this very well could
work against the La Lakers. We'll have to wait until
you lie to really find out. But Magic, just to
go back to what he said when he did retire,
He's still gonna help the the Lakers. Yeah, I mean
this to their recruiting efforts, all right, eight seven seven
(01:36:16):
ninety nine on Fix you'll turn away in eight seven
seven nine nine six sixty three sixty nine. Will Magic
Johnson's comments today on First Take hurt the Lakers this
summer in free agency. We will continue the conversation. It's
the eye couple. Fox Sports radied. That's right, great news.
There's a quick way you could save money. Switch to Geico.
(01:36:38):
All it takes is fifteen minutes to find out if
you could say fifteen percent or more on your car insurance,
and Geico offers coverage for more than just car insurance.
Got a motorcycle, Geico's got you covered. Got an RV covered,
got a boat covered, and there's so much more Geico

That's Geico dot com. Christ Insurance, we know every windshield

(01:37:24):
You're tuned into the eye couple, Chris Brusorry, Rob Park
on this Magic City Monday? Where are you getting these
beats from Iowa City? Sam? Iowa? Sam? I should say
these are classics, Hey, classics up there in Iowa City,
all right? I know the Nyang Twins, all right? That
has made it Tiowa by now I hope all right? Hey,
seven seven ninety nine on Fox, you'll turn the way in.
(01:37:45):
Will Magic's comments today hurt the Lakers in there as
they go after free agents this summer. Let's start with
Sam in Seattle. Sam, what's up with Chris and Rod? Hey, guys,
I'm just really confused about Magic. After listening to this interview,
I really thought, like, I mean you're Magic Johnson, like
Will Chamberlain gave you dabs for off court work that
(01:38:08):
you did. Be HIV. You got like five rings, you
got tons of money. How are you working the dude
who barely got minutes at Michigan? Thank you? He was
a part of the five five. No, he was, and
he was on that team. Sam, So him talking behind
(01:38:30):
your back makes you quit the league. This guy Rob
Pelink makes you quit. Hey, I don't really understand when
you go. You could have gone to Janie and said, Hey,
it's either Walton or me. We'll do a press conference.
Whatever you want, I'll roll with because I ain't gonna
try to do that to you. You know what's saying?
I want you that's a good that's a good point.
(01:38:51):
It is like Magic could have easily just gone to
He could have had a meeting with Rob and Jeanie
and been like, look, Rob, I'm hearing that. You're saying that,
and you gotta chill. You know if I hear another
one in either you're going, I'm right the bottom lines.
He probably didn't want to do the job anymore. I
(01:39:11):
gotta Chris. I got a question for you. How do
you deal with all the talk that does Rob does
behind your back with calling Joy. I see there. I
tell him on there every time he's on he you know,
Chris Brussa on the Eye Couple saying blah blah blah blah.
I'm always told that, but he says it in public,
So that's a difference. That's different. At least he's doing that,
(01:39:33):
and and and behind closed doors, I beat him down.
That's it. I always beat him up. Hey, Sam, thanks
for calling. We appreciate How about Tom and Los Angeles.
You're on the Eye Couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's
up Tom? Hey, how you guys doing that? First of all,
thank you so much for taking a call. Man. I'm
a huge fan of you guys. Thank you. We appreciate that.
Um So, I agree with that last caller. I mean,
(01:39:54):
that's the main thing with me is that I'm just
really confused about Magic because it seems like he says
one thing but as another thing. You know, he said
he's going to help the Lakers out, but then he
really trashes us today, right and listen, I'm I'm a
huge Magic fan. I've been I'm forty six years old.
I've been watching since I was a kid. The Lakers,
and I got an autograph Magic Johnson Jersey right above
my desk at work. So I love the guy, but
(01:40:15):
I feel like he's he's he's kind of not being
genuine with us at this point, and he's really hurt
the team. You know. As far as how he left,
I thought it was unprofessional and abrupt. But even to
this point, he could have waited till after free agencies
on television said all that he could have said, even
even back a month or two ago. Listen, guys, I'm
gonna bounce out, but you know what, I'm gonna help
you out through free agency and I'll be gone in
(01:40:36):
two months. Let me get out of here quiet. There's
a lot of things he could have done. Now. I
almost feel like he's trying to sabotage the team, that's what.
And Tom, there's a way to do it. We could
cover up his statue tomorrow. There you go, Tom right right,
Tom right there, Hey, Tom, you gotta wet blanket, You
(01:40:57):
gotta wet blash talking tuesdays tomorrow you got to you
gonna man about trash. But it's right, no one is
bigger than the organization. You know, we gotta be loved
loyal to the mothership here. I mean, what does he
get out of the Lakers doing poorly? What does he
get out of Rob Polinka doing poorly? Yes, I actually
respect the way Rob Plinker handled things in his press
conference today. I thought that was very professional, very well.
(01:41:19):
He had no choice, he couldn't do anything that was bad. No,
I understand that. I feel you on that. You know,
I'm just saying that. It's just it just seems kind
of childish what they're doing with what Magic is doing
at this point. All right, let's go to CJ in Indianapolis.
Cjon with the Eye Couple. Yo, what's up man? A
big fan of shaw. I just wanted to call in it.
Thank you. Uh, first off, who Magic did? It is
(01:41:40):
gonna hurt them, and uh, it is going to hurt
them the free agency. But I want to say this, man,
I think it's Magic had to come out here and
say something because when this first happened, all I heard
was Magic Johnson is a coward. For the way that
he stepped down. Magic Johnson is bitch. Magice Johnson is
bitch and that and unprofessional. Well, he had a list
of something that he came to a breedment with what
the Lakers like. When he said, I'm not going to
(01:42:01):
be in an office all the time so I can
run my businesses. I make more money doing this, that
was fine. So why did he take the job? Why
they agreed to it, why they say this is okay?
I don't know. I don't understand it here. That's the
thing Gennie said, it's all right, he's not gonna be
So if this is so, if these are all the
things that they agreed to, when yes, I'm gonna have
power and do all of this stuff, and then you
come to find out that you don't have you can't
(01:42:23):
do any of this stuff, then what are you supposed
to do? You can't do the job. It's gonna look
like you failed. But what wyant c J. So then
if if, if, if that's what he agreed on with Genie,
what does he care what Rob Polinka says, if she
knows he was gonna be there part time, I don't
understand that. Why what is I don't think it was.
I don't think it was necessarily about Rob Winker talking
(01:42:45):
about behind this back. I think what really got to
magic what the lack of power, like you said, and
you take a few weeks ago or months ago. I
think it was a to the lack of power that
he couldn't get rid of Rob Link, he couldn't get
rid of Luke Walton. I agree. I think that's why
that is. That is the main problem. That is the
main problem. Robina don't care about Rob the winker, right.
(01:43:07):
I will say, we talked, We talked about this in
the show Rob It was low level backstabbing. It was backstabbing,
but it was it wasn't right. He ain't in the
office and all that. Let's go to Chris in Virginia,
Chris Yon with the Eye Couple. I'm so sick and
tired of the media and everybody dumping all over Rob Polinka.
Rob Pelinka is a grinder. He was a grinder when
(01:43:29):
he was at Michigan. What Magic Johnson did cause his
animosity in any workplace, not showing up, just want to
come in every now and then, making sweeping moves and
sweeping changes. I mean, all Rob Polinka did was tell
the truth. Magic ain't around, and I'm sure everybody didn't
like that. I just don't think the media is dumped
dumping all over Rob Polinka, and I think it's wrong,
(01:43:51):
Magic Johnson, thank you. That's fair. That's fair. That lot
of a little bit support for Pelinka. Yeah, I know,
but it's fair. I mean it did happen, Yeah, Magic Admo.
Thing is Janie knew that that was going to be
the case, you know, and so it's interesting. We'll see
how it plays out, all right. In an effort to
(01:44:12):
clear the air, Magic Johnson only made things messier for
the Lakers. Bill Plasky from the LA Times will explain next,
but first let's bring in our man Brian Finley for
the Latest in sports. Bryan sut Yeah, Hey, what's going on, guys?
We got some Western Conference Finals going on, and I'm
gonna turn this down. I think you can hear the
game going on in the background. Yeah, I see Golden
(01:44:32):
States out to that early leads and Robs dismay. Yeah.
Twenty one eighteen is our score in the first quarter,
and Clay Thompson has seven points. The Warriors have made
eight of the first ten field goals. Again, twenty one
eighteen in the first quarter. Golden State looking for the
sweep tonight in Game four of the Western Conference Finals.
Miles Leonard has six points. According to the LA times.
(01:44:53):
The Dodgers will remove Julio Urius from administrative leave and
activate him. Just a week ago, cops arrested him on
domestic violence charges. In the NFL, the Bucks are releasing
defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. They must have been thrilled about
not having to pay him the thirteen million he was
due next season. Odell Beckham Junior was already on Twitter
calling for McCoy to come to Cleveland. According to media reports,
(01:45:17):
Nadamic and Sue might be a viable candidate to make
his way to Tampa Bay. Meanwhile, multiple reports are saying
that Redskins lineback and Reuben Foster tores acl today at
OTA's he has done for the season. Hey, online car

tremendous columnist for the Los Angeles Time friend of all
and you have to check him out on the Bill
(01:46:42):
Plashka and Mike Harmon show every Sunday right here on
Fox Sports Radio nine am to one pm Eastern Time.
Also go to the La Times Today. Great article he
wrote on the Magic Johnson controversies, talked about how well
the title is Magic Johnson has made things messier for
the Lakers. Magic Johnson makes the Lakers situation messier by
(01:47:06):
sighting Rob Polinka's betrayal. He'll have one tomorrow in on
the Frank Vogel hiring Bill Plasky. Bill, what's the bill?
What's going on? Guy? Yeah, we know you're busy today,
so thanks for joining us. Just talk to us about
how you felt about Magic's you know, thing today and
how it made things worse for the Lakers. Well, I
(01:47:27):
think he was and again I'm I'm just finishing up
a column on the press conference and the whole day.
The whole day was crazy. But I thought it started
with Magic globbing those grenades from New York. I thought
it was selfish. I thought he picked. He picked the
day when he knew the Lakers were having their big
press conference. And everything he said was right, and everything
he said I agree with, But everything he said could
(01:47:48):
have been said yesterday, the day before. I just thought
it made him look bad. It made him look petty,
I think, and people were, so we're all jump on
the bandwagon. Rob Polinka's a backstabber and all that, and that's,
you know, that seems to be what everybody agree is
to be true. I'm not going to dispute that. I'm
not gonna dispute the fact that why Plinkett should not
be in charge there. But I just thought it made
Magic look selfish. I just thought doing it on this
(01:48:09):
day for all the lake. You know, he you know
he could like, Bill, what do you say to though?
I mean, you know there're been reports that this thing
was scheduled a few weeks ago. Both know if Magic
Johnson scheduled something in your studio for a Monday and said,
you know what, I want to do it on Tuesday,
you all would clear they would make changes. There's no
(01:48:30):
doubt about it. Hey, Bill, this is what I said.
Here was my I agree. I thought. I thought what
he did today was sabotage. He hurt the organization. If
I'm if I'm Jennie Bust and I'm dead serious, I
mean what he did, I would suspend him and definitely
not have him involved in any Laker stuff because he's
(01:48:51):
not helping the organization. And I would go up there
with a steplout of myself and cover up his statue
with a blanket. I'm dead serious, Bill, because I what
is he doing? He's not helping, He's I don't understand
that he's all they've done for him and This goes
back to all the stuff he's been through and all
they've done for him, and everything he said is fine.
(01:49:12):
He's got every right to say it, and it's a truth.
Why do you say it today? And why you say
you love Jeanie buss on one hand? Right? You just
they just he just blew that press conference apart. He
tore it down. They were waiting to him writing is
They were waiting through the rubble of the press conference
trying to get out of there. It was a nightmare.
Were there today. Poor Frank Vogel, He's mister positivity. That's
(01:49:35):
gonna be great. You guys were like, really, poor, poor
misguided man. You have no idea what you're in getting
into it. It was terrible. No, it was terrible, Bill.
How are people within the organization feeling? Are they as
negative about it as you are? They're really mad at Magic, Yes,
they are really mad at him. I've gotten stuck off
(01:49:56):
with several of them today. They were furious at him.
They are And now now I'm not saying they don't
disagree with him. Remember this is a different, two different things.
But they're really mad at him for the timing. I mean,
they do the press conference was planning for a week.
Polinkas haven't talked since April ninth, you know, I mean,
you know, let him give him a chance to do
something nice. We were killing him. I've been killing him
(01:50:17):
every week. I'm killing him every day. Give him a
chance to do something to celebrate this new coach at
least give him. Give Vogel a moment in the sun.
Let Polinka answer questions. You know, Yeah, it was that
too much to ask if Magic kind of just this way?
And what don't you all think so if I do? Yeah,
(01:50:40):
I think I think I think he thought Polinka was
gonna rip him at the press because the press conference,
we would have asked Pelinka, what about you and Magic?
Why the Magic quits? The first chance to ask why
Magic quit? Why were the backstabensive? You want on the offensive?
But you know what, Polinka wouldn't have answered. He had
to know Plinka would not have trashed him at nobody.
(01:51:01):
You don't win in this town trash and Magic Johnson.
So he would not have trashed him. Right, there's no
way he's gonna trash him. He mad. Magic had to
know that. He could have waited till after the press
conference to do it. Or do it? Do it yet?
Do it yesterday? You want to do it, do it friday,
Let's give it a weekend to marinate or something. I
don't care, but don't do it today. So I thought,
this is of course again again, this is a selfish
(01:51:21):
to somebody who would quit on the spot before the
last game of the season two, right. I mean, it's
the same thing with love him. I love Irvan, but
gosh damn it. But Bill the power thing. He admitted
that he realized he didn't have the power that he
thought he had. I I speculated to day quit. Chris
and I were doing the show, and I said, the
only way you quit like that is when you realize
(01:51:43):
you're you're worthless, you know, are powerless, and you just
say I'm out of here. You know what I mean,
You just you just want to get out of the
place because you realize you don't have any power. Were
you surprised that he admitted that? No, no, no, because
that was the truth. What I'm surprised about is that
he actually admitted that. Plinka said, he's not in the office.
He's never in the office. He's never here because guess what,
(01:52:04):
he's not in the office He's never there. That's the truth. Yes, right,
And Plink is not the only one to say that.
I've had numerous people I said that to you on
the show, this show before. So I was surprised he
would admit that something that Polinka said about him was
would would be so true and he'd actually admit it
that Plinka said that. But I was just surprised about
(01:52:27):
the whole thing. It just and it just threw up
just the Lakers considered I heard you considered canceling the
press conference. Wow, I'm like, no way, you cancel that
press conference? Right with a new coach? Way, Poor Frank.
Frank's like, I heard, I've heard you, guys. Frank said,
you know what you know. I know you have to
wait and see. But this is gonna be a positive thing.
(01:52:48):
We're gonna have a great team. We're gonna love how
we look. Everybody's looking at him like, oh my god,
you poor guy. You so you you're so naive guy.
I like him. He sounded like the don't in the
room at times. Yes he did, he did something, you know,
brother Flicka was shell shocked. Flinka was shell shocked. But
if you're listened to the thing, my point of pride
(01:53:09):
in the press conference is I actually got the name
Linda Rambis into the conversation. So that was that's I take,
I take. But you know what, how crazy the press
conference was. Bill Warmer the Athletic asked what I thought
us was the most amazing question I remember heard in
the Laker press conference. He said to Rob polincol, Grob,
do you answer to Kurt Rambis? Wow? You ask him that?
(01:53:30):
And what did he say? He said, no, but request right,
no question. Well, this is speaking of that, and we're
joined by Bill class Street Pasky of the La Times. Bill,
what are you surprised? I mean, Jeanie's reputation when she
ran the business side was great, are you they just
seem in nept and magic as wrong as he was.
(01:53:52):
You know, he brought up Tim Harris having saying basketball
decisions whether he was gonna be at the fire. Luke Walton,
I mean, how much of a mess is this? Just
from that standpoint? And are you surprised at how Genie
seems to be floundering? You know in her new and
her role as running basketball. This is a person who
took over the team by running a coup on her
(01:54:14):
brothers through her, she fired her own brother, okay, and
so I thought, this woman, this woman's tough. She's tough,
Genie's tough. We all love her, we love we still
love her. But we loved her for being tough, We
loved her for being assertive. And then she just and
then when it came so that that was one thing,
(01:54:34):
she asserted her control over the team and then she
gave it up. But Bill Lincoln have it, so I don't.
So we are very surprised by this. And what's happened
in two years has been shameful. How much very surprised.
How much is Kobe if at all behind the scenes,
I see, I think you're You're not the first person
asked me that. I say, absolutely not. I know Kobe
(01:54:56):
pretty well. I've talked to him, not not not about
this recently, but in the past about he just doesn't
want to get involved in a basketball's mess. We people
from our paper have tried to get him on this
and he's like, leave me out of this, bro, leave
me out of this. What is it about Polinka though?
The part about why uh, Jennie feels so uh? I
(01:55:18):
think it's Linda Rambuson. Is it what it is. Yeah,
I think that's what it is. I think he meant
Polinka manages up really well. Do you know what that means? Right?
That means he knows, he knows what they know of
the people that he needs to be good? I put
can I put the word brown noser in? The only
times I tried that? And I don't know if I
should try to get better? What happened? They edited it out?
What I said? Did they edit it out? When you try? No?
(01:55:40):
I haven't tried it yet. Should I try? You should try?
By everybody knows what that is. That's that's good. I
like that to try. And I looked it up. It's
it's one word. I thought it was two word, just
one word brown. Others was one word. So, Chris, how
do you think this will affect the Lakers in free agency? Terrible? Right?
(01:56:02):
I mean, who's gonna want to give their lives? These guys?
Remember all these talk reagents can make the money anywhere,
who's gonna want it? Basically, when you're sign alone with
the team, now you're making all these millions of dollars,
you're becoming a partner in the team. You're a partner
that you're your ownership. You base gave an ownership stake
in the team for three or four years. You're there
(01:56:22):
that your whole, you know, economy, your whole, you know,
pay your payroll and everything is all involved in the team.
Are you going to give yourself to the team that
you have no idea, has no idea, who's who's running it?
That has no direction? So like a bunch of kids,
they're snitches and synca paths and all kinds of stuff. Right,
They're all fighting for their territory in the playground. Do
(01:56:44):
you do? Would you want to join that? Yeah? It
looks bad. I don't think so. It looks bad, all right,
But appreciate you're busy. We'll be reading your stuff in
the LA time tomorrow. Thanks a lot, all right, Your
brown knows they're natural brown knows. All right, man, lay
It only took two minutes for one man to change
(01:57:04):

written my Farmers truck fire Insurance Exchanges and affiliates product
unavailable in every state. All right, it's the Eye. Yeah,
you better edit that stuff, Iowa, Sam, It's the trying
(01:57:48):
to get us fire right right, It's the Eye couple.
On a Magic City Monday, Chris Brusar, Rob Parker, Yeah, Rob,
I'm you know I love boxing. In fact, we went
to the Donte Deontay Wilder Tyson Fury fight. We did
the show from the press conference down downtown LA, and
so here I am Saturday night. Of course, I'm watching
(01:58:08):
the Warriors Blazers game, and on my phone, I'm scrambling
to you know, get my get the fight on my
phone right the Deontay Wilder uh Dominique Brazil fighting. We
had Wilder on last week and Brazil was twenty and
old with eighteen knockouts. So we're thinking, oh, this is
(01:58:31):
gonna deear boy's gonna be slugging, and so I'm scrambling
to get the fight, and then I see a tweet.
It's over. Wilder knocks him out. And before I could
even get the fight on. And obviously I've seen it
with the replays. I mean, now you know, Wilder caused
some controversy last week when he said he alluded to
(01:58:55):
killing a man in the ring, which is not unique
in box. No, it's just something I want to talk about,
especially nowadays. Yeah, yeah, it's more sensibi. He would have
said that fifteen years ago. Nobody. That's a different world
we're living, right and so um obviously nobody wants to
(01:59:15):
see anybody get killed in the ring. But he killed
him in a boxing sense. You heard the thud when
he hit him, he landed. He connected that that wasn't
no lucky. I mean that was flush, not a not
a grain. No, no, no, what I'm saying. He caught him.
He caught him and he went down like a ton
(01:59:37):
of bricks and got up at ten. I give him credit,
but he was in no it would have been over
and the right He definitely did the right thing. But
one thing I like to Rob g brought this up.
We were talking between uh segments Wilder who when he
fought Tyson Fury to a draw months ago, Wilder looked
wild no pun intended like he was just throwing all
(02:00:00):
over the play. Yeah, he was throwing haymakers and caught
him a couple of times, but he looked like he
didn't know how to box. I mean, granted it was
only like two minutes, but in the first round he
looked like he was actually throwing some jabs, his punches,
throwing some straight shots, and he looked like he had
learned from the fight with Wilder or with Fury. So
(02:00:22):
now you know, everybody wants to see the rematch with
Fury or the big fight of course, is Deontay Wilder
and Anthony Joshua. Joshua seems to be running though. He's
either running or he's being smart and saying, look, let
me make a lot of money, let me keep dominating
and building up this fight to be bigger. So right,
(02:00:43):
he can get a huge gate when we finally do fight.
But it was it was a monster, monster knockout. And
if Wilder, I mean, he hits, we have to have
very few heavyweights to hit harder than him. Ernie shaved,
you know, but but man, he he hits like a ton,
(02:01:04):
So it's gonna be interesting. How about if you were
at the concession stand buying the drink a hot dog
and you're not in your seat. That's why when you
go to fights, you better get you better be sitting
right from the better be there. But not reminiscent of Tyson.
Yea nobody early on, do not because so many of
(02:01:25):
its fights ended in the first first round. You couldn't
even wait. I think it was Charles Barkley saying when
he went to the Tyson Michael Spinks fight and went
to get some popcorn or something in the first round
and missed him. He knocked Spinks out with a body shot,
I believe. But this did remind me of that in
(02:01:47):
that it was just a one punch knockout early and
he crumpled to the ground. The difference was, and I'm
not saying Wilder was as good as Tyson or is
as good as Tyson, No, no, no, but just a point. Yeah,
but Brazil was twice as big as Michael Spence because
back then I was covering a lot of boxing for
the Free Press. I will boxing column every week. Uh
(02:02:11):
for the Free Press, I went to a lot of fights.
I covered a lot of that stuff. But uh, right,
don't you do you think a lot of it got
to a point where some guys were falling out of
fear from fighting. Tyson like the first landed a few
good shots, they were done. I still remember and you
might remember, I know you remember this fight when when
he fought Frank Brew. I was actually that was the
(02:02:32):
fighting on my mind when you start talking because Frank
Bruno and people he swol Man. I mean, he's as
big as you could get his way bigger than swool
And I remember that a close up of him, and
he looked nervous like and he got knocked on the
first round, and dudes were it was early. I don't
know if it's the first dudes were terrified, like you
(02:02:55):
could see it on their faith. I've never seen guys
into the ring terrified like they were against Mike Tys.
Once he really got that reputation, he was a knockout
artist man, and it was quick and he knocked dudes.
Remember the knockout of Trevor Burbick when he won the championship.
He had Burbick stumbling all over the ring. And that's
(02:03:17):
one of the great things about Ali was he didn't
fear George Foreman like everybody else was going in there scared,
and he getting the courage. All right, go to uh
