Speaker 1 (00:03):
This is Connes Who's corner. I'm Jordan Rich continuing our
series with the author of New England Sweets, Susan Mahra Bregman,
and now the moment you've been waiting for the story
behind marshmallow fluff.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Marshmallow fluff does originate in New England. As we know.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
It's kind of a sweet, white.

Speaker 4 (00:19):
Gooey spread.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
It traces its origins to the city of Summerville.

Speaker 4 (00:24):
Archibald Querry who was.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
A French Canadian immigrant and he was living in Somerville
and he was selling his homemade marshmallow cream.

Speaker 4 (00:33):
Door to door in the years before World War One.
And then entering the picture.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
We were two men, Fred Mower and Alan Durky, and
they lived in Swampscott.

Speaker 4 (00:43):
Mower actually met Quarry.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
They were both working at a candy company.

Speaker 5 (00:48):
And Mower and Jerky ended up purchasing the recipe for
marshmallow cream for five hundred dollars and they opened the
Durky Mower Company in Swampscott originally in nineteen twelve, and
then they moved.

Speaker 4 (01:01):
To Lynn a few years later and they're still in Lin.
So the fluff factory is in Lynn.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
And it's still manufacturing marshmallow fluff to this day. They
rolled out the Fluffernutter sandwich in nineteen fifty eight.

Speaker 4 (01:15):
Basically peanut butter and marshmallow fluff.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Marketing genius, partly because of the name and partly because
it's loved it and that's really what put fluff on
the map.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
