Speaker 1 (00:01):
It's Nightside with Dan Ray. I'm telling you Boston's leech.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
All right, Welcome back everyone. We have reached the end
of another week here of Nightside, and we have arrived
at what we call the twentieth hour. For those of
you who are new listeners to Night's Side, and I
hope some of you are new listeners, we're always looking
for new listeners here on Nightside. All you have to
do is realize that in the twentieth hour, the last

(00:29):
hour of the week. We're on five nights a week,
Monday through Friday, four hours a night. Do the math
five times four twenty, so this is the twentieth hour.
In this hour, everybody has a hall pass, which means
if you called earlier in the week, you can you
can call in a second time. We like to keep
callers at one call a week. However, we do have

(00:53):
a hall pass in the twentieth hour, which is right now.
It's Halloween. And before we get to the conversation of
the hour, let me just tell you that we have
had an amazing set of guests and stories this week.

(01:17):
We talked on Monday night at eight o'clock with Caravascin
of the Globe about the National Pizza Month. We've done
an hour on Your Favorite Pizza last Sunday night, last
Friday night, and we had a lot of calls on that.
We talked with Marie Beams, she's the CEFO of the
Discovery Museum and Act and talk with Dan Mazzella about

(01:39):
traffic congestion getting worse everywhere. And talk with Sierra Munez
about a new black and orange lobster, a one in
thirty million shot. Monday night, we talked with former New
Hampshire Republican Senator John Sanuna. We had talked with Scott
Brown the week before. That sets up a historic confrontation
with two former US senators running in the state of

(02:01):
New Hampshire. Has never happened before. We used to have
senators appointed in this country until sometime in the early
twentieth century. I forget the precise date of the constitutional
amendment that demanded that. This is the first time the
two former non incumbent former US senators and Scott Brown
and John sanun are facing off in a GOP primary.

(02:23):
Then we talked about being burned on the internet. It's
kind of a wild place I was on the internet,
tried to purchase something, had no idea where it was
coming from. Made the fundamental mistake of just going on
the internet as opposed to calling the number as a
company out of China. It presented itself as a US company.
Big mistake. Don't make that mistake. Thank god I have

(02:46):
a VISA credit card holder because I was able to
quickly canceled. Canceled that it was only forty nine dollars,
but it's still forty nine dollars that I didn't want
to lose. We talked about Zoon New England with the
new president and CEO of Zoon New England, Stephanie Brinkley.
On Tuesday night, we talked with doctor Escalera about anxiety.

(03:13):
Talk with Gary Rizzuto about All Saints Way in the
North End. Talk with Gary washburn Burn of the Boston Globe,
a great Celtics reporter. They were one and three at
the time. I think they're three and three now. So
the Celtics have had a really good week. Talk with
State Senator Paul Feeney about regulating grocery store Kiosk. A
lot of friends of mine disagreed with that, but that's okay.

(03:37):
We talked about the on Tuesday night about why rainy
Day funds were not being used to basically reassure SNAP
beneficiaries here in Massachusetts that they would not run out
of their benefits tomorrow. We talked with Representative on Wednesday night,
John Gaskey about excessive zoning. Talk with doctor Varshad rod

(04:03):
hak Rek Rishman about seasonal depression. We will talk with
her about that next week and you'll be able to
call in. Talk with Ken Mahone the meteorologists at the
Boston Globe about Hurricane Melissa as it approached at Jamaica.
Talked with Ray Trevino oil and gas expert about what's
going on in those markets. Talk with Melanie Trengali about

(04:24):
the Medford City Council race out there. It's a very
hotly contested race in Medford. Talked with Lady Lightning about
the bear, an actual bear in her side yard up
in Salem, New Hampshire, and we spent some time talking
about Donald Trump's trip to Asia. Talked about robocalls with

(04:44):
a lawyer who's trying to cut back on the number
of robo calls that are bothering you and me. Talk
with the author, really interesting author Jack Alick by Alick
about so many things have been lost in time. Just amazing.
Talk with Bob Gary about a book that he had

(05:06):
co written called I'm the Other about Bob Who's Jewish,
how he can or cannot get along with a Muslim Imam.
Talked with Mike Dhan of Axios about confusing traffic signals
here in Massachusetts. Talk with Professor Andrew Hale about more
freedom and flexibility for kids, which I also think is

(05:29):
just an interesting topic as far as at least as
far as I'm concerned. And we talked with Bill last
night about Bill Gates. Didn't talk with Bill Gates, but
he's kind of walking back some of his comments about
climate change. And then tonight, oh, we talked about uh,
We're going to gain an hour of sleep tomorrow night.
We talked with Mary Grower Holds about a group called

(05:53):
Old Ladies Against Underwater Underwater Garbage. They're cleaning up ponds
on the Cape. Talked with about doom scrolling where people
get locked in and addicted to doom scrolling on the Internet.
Talk with Manny Hernandez out of Chicago. He has a
scream club out there where people go down by the
Lake Michigan and they scream and they get out of

(06:15):
their system. We talked about the latest on the rules
dealing the judge ruling on the snap decisions tonight, which
is not the end of it for sure, but hopefully
it will mean that the folks who need supplemental nutrition
assistance program will get it. And then we talked last
hour with the owner of the new Boston Dragons, a

(06:36):
group that will be the first professional pickleball league in America.
So with all of that said, it's Halloween. Here's what
I want to do. I have one special call I'm
going to take right away, but I want all of
you to think about the best Halloween experience you ever had.

(06:57):
I would love to hear from you about maybe anything
related to Halloween. I also want to ask you, have
any of you ever seen a ghost? I know that
there are people out there. We've done a show a
few times with ghost hunters. Have you ever seen a ghost?
That's the thought? And do you remember what you went out?

(07:22):
What was your favorite costume on Halloween? I've told you
this before. I used to like to go up my family,
who addressed my brother and me as a hobo because
it was it easy. I either do is take a
cork kind of dirty up your face with the cork.
You've burned the cork, and then put a funny hat
on and a big coat and you were your hobo.

(07:45):
Get a stick wrap, put a couple of things inside
a cloth bag and hold it over your shoulder, and
you were a hobo. The easiest never cost us ascent.
By the way, never cost us ascent. So i'd like
to talk about that. But before we get to that,
as we get the line set up is Halloween. If
you're up in Salem tonight, love to hear from you

(08:05):
what it's been like up in Salem. I want to
do a Halloween themed twentieth Hour, never done one, to
the best of my knowledge, is Halloween themed. You can
join and participate as long as it relates to Halloween.
Six one, seven, two, five, four, ten thirty six one, seven, ninth,
three one ten thirty. Before we go to break, I
have a special caller on tonight who last night around

(08:27):
this time I was wishing her a happy birthday, Dot
in Medford. Hey, Dot, how's the birthday going?

Speaker 3 (08:33):
Thank you so much for the show out last night.

Speaker 4 (08:36):
That great.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
I'm glad you've heard it.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
I had a wonderful ninetieth birthday tonight today with some
of my son his friends. I got a surprise Patty
and he died forty years ago when he was twenty five,
and his friends are still involved with me. And my

(09:00):
son was born on Halloween, and of course it's my birthday.
So I had a wonderful surprise birthday today.

Speaker 4 (09:08):
It was perfect.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
Oh that is so great, dog, I'll tell you. I
know we talked about this last summer that you were
coming up. I didn't mention your age last night because
you're never supposed to mention a lady's age. But but
you are sharpest attack. You've been one of our great
callers and listeners now for the nineteen years.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
Well, I love listening to you that night. I listened
to you every night.

Speaker 2 (09:29):
Well, I'm I hope you were a little surprised last night.
But I did the shout out. I did it at
eleven o'clock. I wasn't.

Speaker 5 (09:35):
Well, that was so nice.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
And I got a few calls today.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Good.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
I'm friends of mine who heard us.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
Excellent.

Speaker 3 (09:43):
Yes, but thank you so much, Dan, just you have
the greatest kid music.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
To my ears. Well, DoD, I wish you ninety more. Okay,
so just keep rolling Hey, you know they say the
first they say the first ninety of the toughest dots,
so I think I.

Speaker 3 (09:59):
Think that might be true. But my son's friends are
so good to me. Now he hit. My youngest son
died forty years ago when he was twenty five, and
then my oldest son died twenty years ago when he
was forty eight. So I mean, these kids are so

(10:20):
wonderful to me.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
Well, wonderful, wonderful friends of your son, and I'm sure
they will oh yeah, brought back some great memories.

Speaker 4 (10:26):
So oh yeah, it was lovely.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
Doc. You just you just keep on keeping on and.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
All right, thanks a lot for the shout out.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
Well and enjoy and enjoy your birthday weekend. Make it
an entire birthday weekend.

Speaker 3 (10:39):
Thanks, it's been a birthday week already.

Speaker 4 (10:42):
All right.

Speaker 3 (10:42):
Thanks Jan, my pleasure, my pleasure, Thank you so much.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
Good great great listeners and daughters. Right up there, she's
a Hall of Fame night side listener. Okay, will we
get back, let's light up the line six one seven,
two five four ten thirty six one seven N I
have contributed already to you. I will tell you that
I can't show you this picture, but I have a

(11:08):
picture tonight of my son and daughter in law's the
daughter in law. We have two grandchildren. One is a
young boy. He's a three years and four months, so
he's getting close to three and a half. He's dressed
as a policeman, and they sent us a picture of

(11:30):
him with his little sister, who is now six months old,
who was dressed up as a prison inmate, and the
picture of her looking at him, and I can just
see she's thinking, well, what is this all about? In
her mind? Is a hysterical picture. I hope I've described

(11:52):
it well enough. I wish I could post it on
one either Knightside Nation or Friends of Nightside would then ray,
But I can't because it's a family picture. But I'm
sure you could talk about maybe your favorite Halloween pictures
as well. Six one, seven, two, five, four ten thirty
six one seven, nine three one ten thirty. This was

(12:15):
not my suggestion. This was Karen who sent me suggestion,
who was producing the program today. Today Marita uh is
out trigger treading well, hopefully she's in by now with
her daughter Stella. So uh, these events these days keep
you young, keep you young with through children and through grandchildren. Uh,

(12:36):
the only lines that are opened right now, the six, one, seven, two, five, four,
ten thirty. We will come right there. I will come
right back, and I hope you're there on the line,
and just let's have some fun coming back on Nightside.

Speaker 1 (12:48):
You're on night Side with Dan Ray. I'm telling you
Bzy Boston's news Radio.

Speaker 2 (12:53):
All right, let's get to the Phone's gonna start it
off with Carrie. Who's calling in from Randolph. Carrie, it's
Halloween night. Did you did you get out with some
of the little ones that did you stay home and
give away Halloween candy? Dan?

Speaker 6 (13:09):
Am I on now?

Speaker 2 (13:10):
Yes you are?

Speaker 6 (13:12):
Oh my gosh, oh Halloween. Halloween used to be my
favorite when I was a kid. But I remember, I'm
so old now. I remember the plastic mask with the
elastic Oh yeah, you couldn't breathe, and it was like
they came in a box and it's like, do you
want to be a princess or a gypsy?

Speaker 2 (13:31):
Or because you can't do that anymore? In Ireland they
called the what used to be called the gypsies. I
think they called them the travelers or the wanderers.

Speaker 6 (13:42):
Yes, yes, no, but that it became like okay, just
throw what do you want to be? My mom would
be like, just throw a headscarf on your hair, and
I'll throw a gold earring on you and just run
out with a pillow case. I grew up in Dowchester,
and I mean we get the pillowcase killed three times.

Speaker 2 (14:02):
Very effective. And then you remember coming home and you
would separate the candy. Oh, guess whatever you like. Some
people liked Reese's pieces. I was a chocolate guy, always
the chocolate guy. So I would have to negotiate with
my brother as to what were gonna who got what?

Speaker 6 (14:24):
Oh my god. My dad would always steale the Almond Joys.

Speaker 2 (14:28):
Yeah, oh yeah, well that was an adult That was
an adult candy. I mean those were the Almond Joys
had coconut and it didn't didn't they?

Speaker 6 (14:38):
Yes, yes, the coconut with the almond. And tonight I
got like tons of candy. I live in like a
kind of terraces and cul the sack were you think
you get a lot of kids? I got four kids tonight.
Really really it's just I don't know, maybe the weather.
I don't know, it was nice out. I mean, I

(15:00):
don't know. Halloween trick of treating is not what it
used to be.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
Well, I don't know. You're in, You're in, You're in Randolph.
I would think that Randolph would be busy. So I
don't know. We'll we'll get maybe some reports from some
of the other other locales. I think the wind tonight
was tough. I was out earlier this evening. Uh, I'm
where I am. The wind has been howling.

Speaker 5 (15:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:28):
I assume this is some of the remnants of the
hurricane that devastated Haiti and the Dominican Republican Jamaica. And
I think that this is where we're feeling the remnants
of this storm. And thank god, it's only the remnants.

Speaker 6 (15:44):
Yeah. So I was like, Okay, the last kid that
shows up at the door is going to get a
whole fist bull of candy.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
But here's the thing, how do you figure out there
isn't a kid coming up behind him? That's tough to
figure Yeah.

Speaker 6 (15:56):
No, I mean my my cutoff is like eight o'clock
at night, and you're still out, you know.

Speaker 2 (16:03):
Yeah, after eight o'clock at night, it's only the teenagers
who are up to no good.

Speaker 6 (16:07):
Right Yeah, now, but oh my god, the plastic masks
when we were kids, you couldn't breathe and no.

Speaker 2 (16:15):
Absolutely there was no air holes and oh my god,
you've been sweaty. Oh it was horrible, horrible, Kerry, thank
you so much for joining us tonight. You got us
off again.

Speaker 6 (16:27):
I enjoy talking with you. You make you make my
work life easier.

Speaker 2 (16:33):
Well, if I can do you last night, I'm just
very happy, and please continue to listen. Tell your friends
about nights Side. I enjoy what I do. It's a
lot of work during the day. It's more work than
people realize, but I do enjoy it.

Speaker 6 (16:45):
Yeah, I don't know how you do it. I mean,
I mean, you're just amazing and just the group of
people that you have calling and it's just a well
nice The.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
Group of people are the most important element. I keep
saying to people, this is not the Dan Right show.
This is Night's Side with Dan Ray and the the
audience are Nightside, And so I thank all of you.
All of you.

Speaker 6 (17:07):
Oh you help me go to sleep every night. Not
that you're born, but no, I get you. Is like
I love listening to all your callers and the different
points of view, and it's just it's nice to know
that there's a nice group of people out there that
can chat.

Speaker 2 (17:24):
It's wonderful to think that there are people who you
could disagree with, they could have You know, I wish
I had the flexibility which I really don't, of being
able to put people And maybe that'll be one of
the things we'll try to do in the weeks and
months ahead. As opposed to me having a conversation, let
a couple of people who might disagree on a subject

(17:45):
and put them on together and let them have added
in a in a polite way, and I can sort
of be the referee.

Speaker 6 (17:51):
And uh, and that's I think that would be great.

Speaker 2 (17:55):
Yeah, well, I have to talk to my producers and
see how difficult that is, because obviously that's that takes
a little bit more activity. And maybe what I can
do is I'll just say, hey, look, if you call up,
I'll put you unnoticed that depending upon what side of
the equation you might come down on the issue we're
talking about tonight, if someone else calls with a different

(18:16):
point of view, doesn't have to be an opposite point
of view, but even a different point of view, that
might make some interesting radio. It's been done before, we
can do it as well. Carrie, Thank you so much.

Speaker 6 (18:26):
The world so much better if we could all just
get together in between.

Speaker 2 (18:32):
Well, as Rodney King said way back in the nineteen nineties,
can't we just get along? And I think that's I
really do. Carol, thank you so much. Is it Carol
or carry I'm it's Carol Carol? Okay, I misread it.
That's my fault, not no. Yeah, absolutely, now I have

(18:52):
a Carol. Thank you so much for your call, and
please come back soon.

Speaker 4 (18:55):
Okay, I will.

Speaker 6 (18:56):
Thanks jam bye, good We had.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
One more in here before the break at the bottom
of ye. Let me go to John and Drake it. Hey,
John and Drake it Happy Halloween. How are you the
same of you?

Speaker 7 (19:07):
Dan?

Speaker 6 (19:08):
Doing well?

Speaker 7 (19:08):
Thank you, thanks for taking the call.

Speaker 2 (19:10):
Welcome, Thank you.

Speaker 7 (19:12):
I listening to you tonight as we always do. And
you talked about Halloween, and my memory of one of
the memories we had was you'll remember the Lowel Spinners,
of course.

Speaker 2 (19:23):
Yeah. I was invited to throw a first pitch out there.
Several years would go up there and do a remote broadcast,
and I always, as we say, told the rubber and
tried to keep the ball below the knees.

Speaker 7 (19:37):
Oh well, we were season ticket holders, so I saw
you each time you were there. As a matter of fact,
what reminded me the call tonight was one of the
nights you had the broadcast station, the big van you.

Speaker 2 (19:49):
S have every time, Yeah, every one of the Knights
where you take the van up there.

Speaker 5 (19:53):
Yeah yeah.

Speaker 7 (19:54):
And as I'm walking through the area where you were parked,
you you would come by and I introduced myself, and
I was with my grandson and I introduced him, and
you were so kind to us, and we really appreciate it.
It's great memory we had. And we got to go
in the trailer and listen to your broadcast for a while.
So it was great fun.

Speaker 2 (20:11):
And and you I actually remember that because we didn't
have too many people who came in the trailer, to
be honest with you, because it was it was not
a lot of space, as you know. But I do
remember that, John, Thank you.

Speaker 7 (20:23):
Yeah, Oh, it was a great time. We were really
fond of it. And then right after you throwing that
ninety mile dollars split fingered fastball right down the middle
of the place.

Speaker 4 (20:32):
So it was great.

Speaker 7 (20:33):
But the story with that I was thinking of was,
I don't know if you you too we call. I'm
sure that they had a. The Canalligator was their their
mascot for the for the Spinners games, and this one
particularly and I'm not sure why, but maybe it was

(20:54):
because we had a young child living with us at
the time, my grandson Horror. It was because we were
see some ticket hilters or whatever a van pulls up.
The van. They used to have that. Uh, they used
to bring out different players and so forth with and
had the Connalligator and the Conalligator came to our house
and went Halloween with my grandson around the neighborhood. They

(21:19):
went around together and caught the case. So it was
great fun.

Speaker 2 (21:21):
So I'm assuming this is a guy in the cannaligated costume, right,
please tell me it's.

Speaker 7 (21:26):
No, it's real. It's real, it's real alligator. No, And yeah,
it's always great fun and the kids loved it. And
so when you said that, it brought me back to
that and also the memory of getting together with you
at the park. So that was great time and I
missed those days.

Speaker 2 (21:45):
Well I do too. It was great for the loll
Spiders up there.

Speaker 1 (21:48):
You know.

Speaker 2 (21:48):
Major League Baseball, as you know, consolidated and said to
each major League team, uh, you could have four bind
the league teams. It's as simple as that. Basically, Major
League Baseball now uses college baseball as as an adjunct
to the minor league systems. They're saving some money on
having fewer players within their organization, but obviously they're drafting

(22:10):
kids out of college. And one of the things about
the spinners was I remember I always used to try
it before the game because I never wanted to make
a fool of myself, although occasionally I have. I went on,
I'd go out in the bullpenner and find somebody to
play catch with, just to loosen up before the game,
because you got to be smart. And I always wanted

(22:30):
to throw from the rubber. I didn't want to do
one of those things where you're standing, you know, twenty
feet you know, down down the pitcher's mound. And I
think it was Scott McGregor, who had been a pitcher
for the Orioles, and I was out on the Oriole bullpit.
I think, what do they call the Firebirds? I think
the double A team, and playing catch, I grab one

(22:52):
of the younger guys. They said, hey, I got to
throw out the first pitch. Kun I loose it up
a little bit. So McGregor kind of comes in the
this is his his he's a bullpen coach, you know,
and he looks at me, he's who are you. I said, well,
I'm I'm a radio guy. Going throughout the first pitch,
I just want to loosen up here. He said, okay,
I said who are you? And he said Scott McGregor.

(23:14):
I remember McGregor. I remember McGregor when he pitched for
both the Yankees and the Orioles, and he was a thin,
skinny little guy. He wasn't big at all.

Speaker 7 (23:24):
But well that that was That was prot of the
fun too, was seeing all these players that came back
as coaches, saying they even had Louis Till out there
for a few weeks one time.

Speaker 2 (23:32):
With the Oh yeah, Louis was the best. I mean,
Louis was the best. But McGregor had put on more
than a few pounds he could have used to weigh.
And when he said, you know, I'm Scott Scott McGregor,
I'm pretty sure it was McGregor. I really, okay, nice
to meet you, but I didn't want.

Speaker 7 (23:47):
To say wow, well yeah, I did never recognize you.

Speaker 2 (23:51):
Well, you know, everybody can put on a few pounds.
I had put on a few pounds eventually, and then
I found awakenm on eighty I took and I took
off thirty five pounds. If I had known him I
at the time. I didn't have them at the time,
but I would have anyway. He was. He was quite
nice actually, And you know, it's great to see these
guys who you know, they were at the time where
they weren't making multi mile time million. They were making

(24:13):
a good salary, but they weren't making you know, ten
million dollars a year. So a lot of these guys
had to go coach or tea or you know, coach
in college or whatever. And but all of them, all
of them. As a good friend of mine who played
for the Red Sox used to remind me, anybody who
made the big leagues for one game, in one game,
their names in the book, that's all that matters. You know,

(24:35):
it doesn't matter if they're Babe Ruth or they played
one game. They played in the major leagues. And you
can never forget that. John, I love the call man.
Thank you so much, Thank you so much. How old
is your son now he was?

Speaker 7 (24:47):
How old you got my grandson? Your grandson are twenty
years old.

Speaker 2 (24:51):
So okay, that that works about right, Because if he
was six or so at the time, that's fourteen years ago.
We've been doing the show for nineteen years. We would
have been we would have been up there in twenty eleven,
twenty twelve in that era. Absolutely, yep, John, I recall it.
I recall it very well, and I'm still glad that
you you remembered my ninety mile an hour splitter right

(25:11):
at the knees.

Speaker 7 (25:12):
Thanks man, Thanksgiving, Thanks.

Speaker 2 (25:15):
Talk, souing pep a great one. Good night, all right.
I threw the ball over the plate every time, never
bounced the pitch, never threw it over the catcher's head,
simple as that. I will. I stand. That's that's true.
I have I did it five times back on Night's
Side only line six, one, seven thirty.

Speaker 1 (25:32):
Back after this, you're on night Side with Dan Ray.
I'm Boston's news Radio.

Speaker 2 (25:39):
I'm to bring up to date on the World Series.
The Dodgers survived. They won Game six to nine, three
to one. Tomorrow night, Game seven. For all the marbles
I'll be watching. Let us get back to the phone calls.
I'm gonna go to John in New York. John, you
were next on Nightside, Welcome.

Speaker 4 (25:56):
Back, John, Yes, happy, how right back at you, John.

Speaker 2 (26:02):
I forgot to ask a couple of people, as anyone
out there actually seen a ghost. I suspect that we
have some people in our audience who will admit to
having seen ghosts. That question out there.

Speaker 8 (26:16):
No, I haven't seen any ghosts. But I did do
the burning of the cork on the gas stove, you know,
the black charcoal st.

Speaker 5 (26:27):
I did that hole.

Speaker 8 (26:28):
My brother, my older brother did it too.

Speaker 2 (26:30):
Oh. Absolutely. But you know, I mean back in those days,
you know, your father would have had hats, you know,
some sort of a hat you could put on which
would complete the ensemble and it didn't cost you anything.

Speaker 8 (26:44):
Yeah, he had an old you know, none of the
old hats.

Speaker 2 (26:49):
Yes, absolutely sure, Yeah, yeah, anything like that, anything like
that would work. It's amazing how you know we did.
We never knew each other as kids, we did grow
up in the same area. But that was the easiest
costume for a little boy back in the day, and
it worked. It worked.

Speaker 4 (27:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (27:11):
I'd just like to mention that I enjoy your program
very much. I listen to it every night in the
car on the way home, and I'm really especially like
when the ladies call and the conversations you have. It's
so nice the way you conduct yourself, and you're so
polite and kind to these women and understanding. You're a
real gentleman.

Speaker 2 (27:32):
Well, I love I love women callers. I love all
my callers. But I think women have a different take
on many subjects. And I do think that you find
on certain issues, you know, if you're female, you're more
likely to, if not, come to conclusion. But look at it,
this from a different from the same, different point of view,

(27:53):
from the same point of view, even though you might
come with a different point a different conclude. That's what
I'm trying to say. But yeah, we've had We've had
about forty percent women callers this week. As a matter
of fact, I think it's up a little bit higher
than that, and I love it.

Speaker 8 (28:12):
That's because you're a Dan the gentleman, don't you get
John Well.

Speaker 2 (28:18):
I understand what you're saying. But look, I want I
want I want people of all backgrounds. I want young people,
I want older people. I want men, women, all different
racial backgrounds. I want, you know, people all different points
of view in every in every way. I have a
lot of callers on this program who's who literally have

(28:41):
spent time in prison. And I have great respect for
people who have been able to work through the system,
make a mistake, pay the debt to society, and come
back out. I have a lot of people who have
called this program and admity to having had an addiction problem,
whether it was drugs or alcohol. No one looks down
at those evil in this program because those people have

(29:02):
been able to survive some tough circumstances. I've had homes
people call this program. I don't know how. They may
have a phone, but they're homeless. But they have a
phone and they call the program, and they get as
much respect as somebody who calls who lives in a
million dollar mansion.

Speaker 8 (29:19):
Yeah. Well, those homeless people sometimes that's the only thing
they have. Did I know that phone.

Speaker 2 (29:24):
There are a lot of people, by the way, out
there in our society to this day who still live
in their own car. There are people out there who
lives who live in cars.

Speaker 8 (29:33):
I know, I know, I know you're right they do.
I don't learned anyhow, I know, I know. Hey, as
much as I enjoyed speaking to you tonight, I'm going
to make some rooms, some other people to get in
and say.

Speaker 6 (29:49):
Hello to you.

Speaker 2 (29:49):
John, I appreciate it so much. We will talk soon,
my friend. And it's good to know that. I actually,
as a young kid, I thought to myself have living
the life of a hobo. I mean, when I was
nine or ten, I was thinking that kind of appeals
to me. You know, he jump on the freight train,
you never know where it goes. I actually thought at
that time I was the kind of same boy without

(30:10):
of course, didn't quite work out that way. And I'm glad.
I'm glad the path that I took.

Speaker 4 (30:14):
But I'm gonna tell you.

Speaker 8 (30:16):
I'm gonna tell you rend one funny thing.

Speaker 1 (30:18):
You know.

Speaker 8 (30:18):
I used to travel for a machine company, you know,
and they gave you the DA mood and hotel it all.
And a guy, a guy I worked with from Ohio.
You know what he used to do then to pocket
the pad and he'd go to the freight yard and
in the summer time and he he and he sleep in.

Speaker 4 (30:34):
A freight car.

Speaker 8 (30:36):
Really yeah, so he should pocket the hotel money because
they gave oh gotcha, Oh.

Speaker 2 (30:43):
I got you, Okay, So he was he was taking
the hundred bucks that they were giving him for the hotel.
And okay, as long as the freight car didn't take
off and and and and take him five miles away.

Speaker 4 (30:56):
You guys.

Speaker 2 (30:58):
Have a great weekend. Alloway, all right? Talked you soon?
All right? Let me get one more in here before
the break. I got Tim up in Gloucester. Tim in Gloucester,
you were next on nightside A right, where are the
ladies tonight? Come on, Tim, go right ahead?

Speaker 6 (31:11):
Oh ready, witch don't come out then. I don't let
the witches get your damn.

Speaker 2 (31:15):
I promise I won't. Tim. Have you ever seen a ghost?

Speaker 4 (31:19):
I think I'll see. Yes, I have.

Speaker 1 (31:21):
Is that?

Speaker 2 (31:22):
Are you telling me the truth?

Speaker 4 (31:24):
I'm telling you the truth. That was a great digger
Woodbrook Cemetery. For two years, I buried about eighty people,
four guys from Vietnam alone. Wow, I've seen ghosts I did.
It was here for two years for the city of Woving.
I did good service and they were pleased with me.
It was tough, the Vietnam guys. I did it alone.
The guy who go to dig with me didn't show up.

(31:45):
I dug a hole alone, and I put the earth
on them alone. It was the hottest thing I ever did.
The undertakers used to tip all the grave diggers. After
the people would leave. They come out and give me
a tip. I say, get that away from me. Good
for you, dyo. God bless am, God bless the veterans,

(32:07):
God bless your brother, the state trooper, and God bless.

Speaker 2 (32:11):
You, Tim, Tim. I appreciate that. I really do and
enjoy Gloucester. It's gotta be pretty windy out there tonight.
I'm hearing it down here. How wind is still howling.

Speaker 4 (32:23):
It's Holland's like a holocuanes anyhow you see Charlie Ray
tell him, I said, I but yeah, let me.

Speaker 2 (32:29):
Tell you, you bet you. I hope to see him
at some point. Thanks, buddy, will tell you.

Speaker 4 (32:33):
I'm miss Fritz. My dog Fris was the host is
with the Mostessue was a girl with a boy's name
sixteen years. Still have a broken hot.

Speaker 2 (32:42):
They all leave too soon, They all leave too soon. Too.

Speaker 4 (32:47):
Oh we see them again like we see our relatives.
God bless you.

Speaker 2 (32:50):
Right back at you, Thanks Tim, talk soon, but my
friend will talk soon. Be well, be well, all right,
it's Halloween, folks. Come on, Lee. I have the only
lines that are open our six one, seven, two five
four to ten thirty. A couple of folks are dropped off,
So fill that line here. It is six one, seven, two,
five four ten thirty. We're talking about Halloween. This has

(33:11):
not been like a off the phone call chart, which
is okay, We're doing fine. Join the conversation. My name's
Dan Ray. This is nights Side. I'm coming up. I
got Pete and Revere, got Margie. Margie up in the Catskills. Uh,
and we have room for you. I have three lines
at six one, seven, two, five, four to ten thirty.
Your memory of Halloween, your Halloween story. You have ever

(33:34):
seen a ghost? I can't say that I have, but
I'm sure they exist. I don't know how to describe it,
but I'm sure they exist. I'd want to know which
to thank. Back on Nights Side after.

Speaker 1 (33:47):
This Night Side with Dan Ray, I'm telling you BZ
Boston's News Radio.

Speaker 2 (33:55):
All right, here we go, let's keep rolling.

Speaker 7 (33:57):
Here.

Speaker 2 (33:57):
We're going next to Pete in Revere. Here, Pete Revere.
Bet it's windy on the beach tonight. Pete, how are
you tonight?

Speaker 4 (34:05):
Very good man. I haven't talked to you in a while,
and I'm busy.

Speaker 2 (34:07):
Well, that's Okay, what's your Halloween story? Thank you?

Speaker 4 (34:13):
Well, several things. Okay. First of all, there is a
book put out.

Speaker 2 (34:17):
I do have it in my.

Speaker 4 (34:18):
Collection called Haunted Houses and Castles in America. Oh yeah,
well I just get that make a party library. I'll
talk about. Uh, go to colonial in first and in
the center of Conkerent where the battle took place, to
Colonel In. As you go in, go right up to
the front desk and they'll give it. It's all written out.

Speaker 2 (34:39):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (34:40):
Many many brides. It's it's a bridal suite upstairs and
uh you know, after people leave, they right back and
I say, this is what happened. And it's always the
same story.

Speaker 6 (34:51):
You know.

Speaker 4 (34:51):
I just don't say anything at first, but eventually they
write to the to the management. So it's all documented
about the about the ghost there and if it's not
if it's not taken, they even take you in to
look at it, but they come out late at night,
as they say, so you're not going to see it
during the day. All right. Wow, I wish I had
known that.

Speaker 2 (35:08):
I remember taking some friends. I wish i'd known that
at the time.

Speaker 4 (35:13):
Pete, I offered you a tour many times, some day,
you'll come with me till for thirty years I've been
doing this, and I'll give you the most that there
are in one place in Newport, at the Belcourt Castle,
owned by the Tennis are you aware of Are you
aware about this place?

Speaker 2 (35:29):
Nope?

Speaker 1 (35:30):
No?

Speaker 4 (35:31):
All right again, well I'll take you there, no charge,
all right, missus Tenny herself had told me when she
moved there. She was a big, big hall upstairs with
her get married, very large hall, has a set of
several pieces of armor. Okay, But she would leave the room.
She set the light, walk across the other the other
side to go out in the light. We go on.
She did several times. She did it. She just gave up.

(35:53):
She said, hey, they want it on, and leave it on. Okay.
In another situation, I'm talking about this armor now, okay.
You can see one with the helmet on where you know,
you pick it up with your hand up and down,
you know. And that's why they swooped the army anyway.
You can see where a spear went through that piece
and killed the person aside. Well you don't, you walk

(36:15):
in half as anytime and the arm of the armored
piece rises, and they had a bunch of girls. Once
they on the bus, they flew out so fast.

Speaker 2 (36:25):
Unbelievable would have been ahead of them, never mind.

Speaker 4 (36:28):
Well, but also there's a music when I'm upstairs, very quiet.
There's a window never opened the fireplace, and two mirrors
on the wall. I mean big mirrors like your house window. Okay,
Now you can see the reflection of the chandelier in
front of you in the mirror. And now, Dan, I've

(36:50):
been there over one hundred times in reality, I would
say at least thirty five to forty times. I tell
my clients watch the mirror, just stand there and watch
it to reflect and starts turning left and right, sometimes easy,
sometimes fresh, and there's no winds. It's a solid mirror
that'll blow your mind.

Speaker 2 (37:09):
So all right, that is so much, so much good information, Pete,
I got pack lines, so I've gotta go. I loved it.
This was tour. I'll take you up on it, trust
me on that. Thanks, all right, buddy, Talk to you soon,
Margie and the catskills, Margie, I got three more behind you.

(37:29):
So everybody's calling late, as often happens. What do you
got for me, Margie?

Speaker 9 (37:35):
I'll make it short and sweet, it's a funny tail.
My first Halloween in a country, rural setting. I came
from a city setting. So I had a huge bags
of candy and I sat there all evening waiting for
trick retreaters. Nobody came. Ten o'clock. I went to bed. Midnight.

(37:56):
My husband wakes me up. There's trick and treats at
the door. They big boys without masks. He said, no,
they've all got masks. I promise you. I go down
and open the door, and they all had masks. Six raccoons,
and I took my bag of candy. They were whole bars.

(38:19):
Each one came in line. Nobody fought. They held out
their little pause. They each got a candy bar and
they sat there eating them.

Speaker 2 (38:28):
Oh that's a great story, Margie, that is a great story.
Thank you so much.

Speaker 4 (38:32):
Happy Halloween to you, you too, Bye bye, Thanks, good night.

Speaker 2 (38:36):
Let's keep rolling here. I'm gonna get Doug in North Carolina.
And Doug, you're a veteran CALLI. You gotta be quick for.

Speaker 4 (38:41):
Me, buddy, Go ahead, Yeah, Dan, good evening. I'll make
this really short. For a number of years I lived
in Amityville, Long Island, and every Halloween because I lived
within feet of quote the haunted house that was never haunted,
that the whole thing was a fraud, but we had

(39:02):
police details around that house. People would try to steal
rip off shingles on the house and its for like
a mile every Halloween, and the local people we just
dreaded that day because it into a spectacle.

Speaker 2 (39:22):
Ye all right, I got you and Doug your your
audio is failing me right now, but I got the
drift of the story. Thank you, buddy, call earlier man.
I love to talk to you. Doug. Have a great Halloween.

Speaker 4 (39:33):
Okay, okay, fens Dan be well, right.

Speaker 2 (39:37):
Back at you, Robin Halifax, Rob, you gotta be quick
for me. I got to listen to it.

Speaker 5 (39:41):
Yeah, And and I do Halloween differently. As of twenty
twenty three, I couldn't make it during the daytime. I
got hold while cricket treating was going on, so all
I could do was go up and find all the
dollar bills. I couldn't house. And this kid ran up
and down the driveway. I gave him a buck here
a buck yet I ran out. But today I prepped

(40:03):
and miss twenty four due to this injury. But I
had Scott, my one of my caregimers get two hundred
to pack a packet of two hundred dollars.

Speaker 2 (40:13):
Whoa bill? Hey.

Speaker 5 (40:14):
Yeah, he sat down at the bottom of the driveway
game two at a time, two at a time until
he went through the first hundred and across the street
was another. Uh he does the lawd for my other nighbor. Yeah,
he does us both.

Speaker 1 (40:28):
You know.

Speaker 5 (40:28):
So we had a great fun.

Speaker 2 (40:30):
Good for you. You're going to be the most popular
house in the neighborhood. Oh, I am thanks, Thanks man,
I gotta go. Thank you much. Uh, we're tight on time, Linda,
I give you ten seconds. Let's w let's wish each
other Happy Halloween.

Speaker 6 (40:45):
Happy Halloween, Dan, I'll do so, that's it.

Speaker 2 (40:49):
Yeah, unfortunately we're flat out a time.

Speaker 9 (40:52):
We shoulday, I know, I'm sorry.

Speaker 4 (40:56):
And and also also thanks day as well.

Speaker 2 (41:01):
Absolutely we've got to cont forget that, that's for sure.
Thanks so much. It means hallo, deed hallow Eve. Thanks
