Speaker 1 (00:01):
It's Nightside with Dan Ray on Boston's Beach Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Thanks very much, Dan, walkin Jets one one. They're back
at it tomorrow night and a little after six o'clock,
so no problem. Hey, you know what, We've had a
couple of pretty intense hours here tonight talking about cutbacks
in medical research with doctor Michael Collins at nine o'clock.
He's the chancellor at the UMass chan Medical School, which

(00:30):
is a great research school as well. They they've had
Nobel Prize winners out there and it's been a It
was a very interesting hour with doctor Collins and I
learned a lot. I hope you did as well. And
then last hour talking about the federal government shutdown. I
watched some of the local newscasts on well, I watched

(00:50):
one of them. I think it was on Channel four
tonight because I think the ballgame, one of the late
the earlier ballgames, was in Channel five, so I switched
over to Channel four and they were talking about some
people who had come to Boston and when have you
come to Boston to go to visit some historic sites?
And I guess one of the things that were shut
down was the USS Constitution so people could look at

(01:11):
the Constitution where they had to look at it through
a chain link fence. They could go to the Constitution Museum.
So what I'd like to do, as I mentioned earlier,
and I have no idea where you are. I know
where I am, and I know where I've been for
the last eighteen years. Tonight we have started our nineteenth
year of night Side with Dan Ray. I've explained to you,

(01:37):
I think several times recently that this is not the
Dan Ray Show. This is Nightside with Dan Ray, and
Nightside are all of you listeners and hopefully callers, because
I can bring on the best guests in the world.
And I thought that both my guests and I were
really good. Doctor Collins at UMass Chan Medical talked about

(01:59):
substantial cutbacks that the Trump administration wants in medical research,
and I don't see that as a political issue because
essentially he was saying that last year medical research facilities
schools around the country had about forty eight thousand dollars
forty eight excuse me billion dollars, which sounds like a

(02:20):
huge amount of money, but in the context of the
federal budget, that's not a huge amount of money for research.
In trying to find cures for diseases everything from pediatric
cancers to als Luke Erick's disease. And then the last
time we talked about the government shutdown and what does
it mean, Well, it doesn't mean probably as much. If

(02:40):
you watched either Fox or CNN today, you would have
thought that it had greater impact. No, you mayl will
be delivered, your Social Security payments will be delivered. Most
people in this country do not work for the government.
Probably too many people do work for the government. Those
who are assuming the President Trump does not follow on

(03:04):
his threats, most of those who are furloughed will receive
their back pay. They basically get a two or three
or four or five week vacation. But it's the politicians,
Democrats and the Republicans taking out their own turiff so
they can go back to their basis, whether it's a
very conservative Republican base or a very liberal, very radical

(03:27):
Democratic base and say I've fought for the principles that
you believe in in someone suggesting that Chuck Schumer is
concerned about a challenge. He's up for reelection next year,
and if he does decide to stand for reelection, he
may have a challenge from AOC Alexandria Acossio Cortez, who

(03:48):
knocked off a long term incumbent Democrat to win her
seat in the Husse of Representatives. But anyway, because this
is our first night of our nineteenth year, and having
done this show now for eighteen years, and starting our
nineteenth year, the show was named night Side with Dan Ray,

(04:08):
and we debuted as night Side with Dan Ray on
October first, two thousand and seven. I had been doing
this this gig, this this format for several weeks. It
was after David Brudnoi had died, and after Paul Sullivan
unexpectedly died and I was filling in for Paul, and

(04:30):
Jordan Rich was doing some filling in as well. And
I think it my suspicion is that I probably won
the job because Jordan had other things to do. Jordan
was still very active and doing very well by the
way I talked with him recently. You know, he's been
he himself has been dealing with a medical situation in

(04:51):
his life, but he's doing really well, really well. Anyway,
I thought that as opposed to trying to introduce a
third serious topic tonight, since it's the eleven o'clock hour.
I'm just gonna go open lines. Okay, I was thinking
that we would continue and talk about the shutdown. No,
I would like to hear from as many of you
as possible in this hour. If you've never called the

(05:11):
show before, I'd love to hear from you. I'd love
to hear from you. And simply, why do you listen
if you don't call? Because the whole purpose of this
program when I started was to give everyone the opportunity
to listen to the program, but more importantly, give everyone
the opportunity to participate in the program. Because I believe

(05:35):
that many of us out there think, well, I can't
talk to my and it's only gotten worse by the
way over time. I can't talk to my friends because
they disagree with me, I think, Or I can't talk
to my family members because they disagree with me. I
think we can trace this back to the election of
twenty sixteen, when Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were both well.

(05:59):
They ran very interesting campaigns in twenty sixteen. So what
I want to do is I'd like to just throw
it out there, give you an opportunity to join the conversation.
If you've never called before, this would be a great
night to get your feet wet. If you've called before,
let me know what is it about the show that
you like? If you listen, I assume you like it.

(06:19):
Maybe you'll listen because you don't like it. You can
tell me that as well, or what you'd like to
see us do in addition to what we're doing. That's
really I think the gift that you can give your
fellow listeners. Maybe there's an element of stories that you
haven't heard. On night's side. We do that eight o'clock

(06:40):
hour and on any given night we run the gamut
with those mini I call them mini interviews for mini
interviews during the eight o'clock hours, so that you know.
Tonight we had one guest if you weren't live with us,
who talked about a book which I guess a magazine
called Uncle John's Bath from reader, which people buy and

(07:02):
they give us presents, and it's the sort of thing
that someone can take into the bathroom with them and
relax and read a little bit and get educated. We
also talked with a doctor about the rs V virus
respiratory virus that will once again make its rounds here
this winter and what people can do about it. We

(07:24):
talk with a writer about World Series Memories with Jeff Rudeimer,
which I loved talking about. And then we talked with
a woman about a national menopause program that actually is
going to be held tomorrow at Codman Square Health Center,
and you can listen to that show that hour. When

(07:49):
Rob posts tonight's show, we post it every night, all
four hours on Nightside on demand. But I'm going to
just open up the phone lines and if you've never
called before, give it a shot. If you have a question,
give it a shot. If you have a suggestion, give
it a shot. If you have a criticism, give it
a shot. It's as simple as that. As far as

(08:11):
I'm concerned, what this show is about our guests, whose
purpose oftentimes is to inform as well as entertained, maybe
to take your concerns about whether again it's medical research
with doctor Collins or the federal government shutdown, which when
you watch the six thirty newscast then you'll see what's

(08:34):
the lead story. It's like, what's this all about? Well,
you've got a pretty good explanation last hour courtesy of
Kurt Couchman, and I'm just going to open it up
here and let's have a little bit of fun. I
just felt we had two serious hours which are very
representative of the show. But now I want some input

(08:55):
from you. It's as simple as that. Six one seven, two, five,
four ten thirty six ten thirty. Oh yeah. We have
that triple eight line, which is eight eight, eight, nine
to nine, ten thirty. Wherever you are within the sound
of my voice, we'd love to hear from you, particularly
if your new call us, but irrespective, join the conversation.

(09:16):
We're going to be here all midnight, and uh, I
need people's ideas. I need fresh ideas. This is our
first program in our nineteenth year. Join the conversation. Coming
back on Nightside right after this.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
It's night Side with Dan Ray on Boston's news radio.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
All right, let's go to the phones. Love to hear
from you if you've never called before, particularly, but we'll
start off with Alex. Hey, Alex, thanks for checking in.
Welcome back. How are you, sir, Dan?

Speaker 3 (09:47):
How are you good? Eving?

Speaker 4 (09:48):
I was gonna ask so listening to night Side, you
do an awesome job because it's like I'm taking courses
online and they don't they don't cost me anything because
you have all kinds of guest speakers and all kinds
of you know, a wealth of knowledge and and it's yeah,

(10:09):
and it's a really nice, nice, uh way to uh,
you know, learn about things that you don't know too
much about.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
Yeah. I'm delighted by the number of people who are
willing to come on and spend It's not easy sometimes
to get people to come on at nine or ten
or eleven o'clock at night. Uh, But I just had
two great guests tonight that I learned a lot, and
I'm assuming if I learn a lot, as some of
my audience will learn a lot as well.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
Oh right, right, yeah.

Speaker 4 (10:36):
Now, I was wondering, now, when you were on the
other side doing uh, you know, recording as a televisister
on television, compared to what you're doing now, which which
would you say looking back to you, do you I'm
sure you enjoy what you're doing now or do you
miss that?

Speaker 2 (10:57):
No? It was funny at different points in my life.
It's a really good question. As a reporter in my twenties, thirties,
forties and fifties, I mean, you know, I worked for
thirty one years in television and it was exciting. It
was a great time to be in television, television was
was was booming. I mean it was. We were traveling

(11:20):
a lot. I got to go to places that I
never thought I would get to go to, several trips
over the years to Europe, Ireland and Italy and England
and Germany and Poland and in Italy. As I say,
lots of places that I wouldn'tar really never would have
gotten to if I just was a job as a lawyer, probably,

(11:42):
and then travel all around the country presidential campaigns and
PA Pope trips. Did two or three, you know, pope
trips around the country, all sorts of presidential campaigns in
nineteen eighty seven, seventy six, eighty eighty four, eighty eight,
ninety two, ninety six, two thousand. I just and you

(12:02):
got to meet all sorts of different people, you know,
got to as a TV reporter, got to wear a
bulletproof vest a couple of times in a couple of
dangerous situations, had a guy in Indiana point a shotgun
at me and my camera crew. Back in the day.
We did some really crazy things. When I look back
on it now, radio is so interesting because I can

(12:25):
reach thousands of people. When I was on a television report.
I was a part of the cast. I was not
the main anchor, but even that we were part of
a team. It was the eyewitness news team with the
WBZ News team. Now I'm here with Nightside with Dan Ray.
I'm the this is the show that my name is

(12:46):
associated with it. So I want to make sure every
night it's a little different that people feel welcome to
come and comment and try to have some conversations. And
that's what we've done for eighteen years, and I hope
we can continue to do it for a lot more.
I think I did. I did those two jobs at
the right time in my life. I don't know that
I would have had the energy now. We used to

(13:07):
have to chase people with microphones, you know.

Speaker 4 (13:09):
I mean, oh yeah, I see like some people, you know,
very elusive and you have to you have to, you know,
be on their on their heels, you know.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
Well I was, I like to I remember the best
people I used to chase with the corrupt FBI agents
here in Boston.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
Yeah, I was right, you know.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
I mean, and look, you know, I knew what I
was doing, and they knew what that I was doing,
and they didn't particularly like it.

Speaker 4 (13:36):
But that's Okay, it worked out. You can write a book.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
Well, I don't know. I've been asked to do that.
I think I'd have to find a ghostwriter and tell
them stories. I don't know that I have the discipline
to sit down. I have a lot of records in
my head. So if there's a great ghost writer out
there who wants to talk to a guy that spent
a long time in the media, I'll be happy to
talk to them. But I yeah, I got to meet

(14:02):
I mean I got to meet everybody from uh, you know,
Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, of course, Mike Dacacis,
George Bush, John Kerry, George Bush forty three, right, Bill Clinton.
It's I got I got every I was so lucky

(14:24):
in television, yea, Alex, I wish.

Speaker 4 (14:28):
I was gonna say, yeah that that sounds like an
awesome job. I really, uh, you know, years ago, I
was involved with a foreign newspaper and I was doing
photos and I did get to meet not as many
people as you, but it's really exciting. You know, you uh,
you're taking photographs and these people are you know, uh,

(14:49):
you know, a front page. You know, people and they
and they get to meet them and they.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
And they're really just the same. I mean, when it
comes right down to it, you know they put you know,
they're they're their pants on in the morning, the same
way all of us put our pants on in the morning. Alex,
thank you much. Great to hear your voice. Continue to
support Nightside. I really appreciate your your loyalty to the program.

Speaker 4 (15:10):
Well to have a good night, Gus.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
Thank you, Budy appreciate it. Let me go to Pete,
South Carolina. Hey, Pete, welcome.

Speaker 3 (15:15):
Back and welcome back to you, my friend. I was linked.
I always love when you have open phones because being
down in South Carolina, I call you a show. When
it's a national referendum, I don't want to take up
the time that the people in the Boston or the

(15:38):
Northeaster could could use to get in to talk to you.
If I'm taking up time because it doesn't really affect
me down here. Okay, if it's a national if it's
a national referendum, then by God means you know you
hear from me. Yep, and uh, you also hear from

(16:01):
me when the Yankees play the Red Sox because I
am really rooting for the Socks.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
Yeah, I'll tell you that tough loss tonight series, Yeah, tough,
tough loss tonight, big game tomorrow night. They're going to
be on the shoulders of one of those rookie pitchers
and the Yankees are going to be starting a kid
who who pitched from Walpole, Massachusetts.

Speaker 3 (16:24):
So it's right around the corner.

Speaker 2 (16:27):
Yeah, literally literally, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (16:29):
I'm going up to my daughters because she wants me
to come up for Red October and she's in Richand City,
New Jersey, So I'm going to go up to her.
My wife and I are going to go up for
a few weeks. We have a free house. So but anyway,
that's why I call I always listened. I remember one
time I listened and you were so mad at somebody

(16:52):
because you had you had on a a congress men
or an alderman, I can't think of the proper term.
It was an irishman from the south, the South end,
And I could tell just from the sounds of your

(17:15):
voice you were really ticked.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
What was the subject? You remember what I was ticked about?

Speaker 3 (17:26):
Yeah, it was it was an irishman with a congressman
with an Irish name. His dad was a congressman. I'd
have to go back and look in the.

Speaker 2 (17:40):
In the I normally get along pretty well with people.

Speaker 3 (17:44):
I wonder you know you you it was about it
was about bussing and stuff like that, and it's just
just got crazy. I have to go back and look
a few months ago. That's why I call. I called
because you know, now this government shutdown. Yes, this could

(18:08):
affect me. I'm a social security guy, just like you.

Speaker 2 (18:11):
You're gonna be fine. Social Security is not going to
be interrupted. Okay. So I don't like it when politicians
use that threat and upset people. That bothers me a lot, Okay,
I I mean, because you know, tell the truth, don't
you know, don't guild the lily. So it's better for

(18:33):
your political argument, you know, if you want to guild
the lily and say to everybody, I'm the greatest congressman
in the world, and if you vote for me, I'll
have a car in every garadget and chicken in every pot.
That's fine, that's what politicians do. But don't scare people.
I don't. I'm horrified to think that there are you know,
older folks who are who are dependent upon their social scurity.
Check who I want them to know? By listening to

(18:56):
this program, your social scurity check is going to arrive
this month on time, and it's it's not going to
be in any way, shape or form diverted or intercepted.
And that's why we do some stuff. Also on scams.
I I know that there are scamsters out there that
take an advantage of people terrible.

Speaker 3 (19:15):
But I have one more point to make to go
with a laugh. Okay, how are we going to pay
off our lobster rolled cheesesteak bet?

Speaker 2 (19:26):
And say, now, what are we betting on it? Or
is this a bet that we had.

Speaker 3 (19:31):
The Boston Red Sox.

Speaker 2 (19:33):
If we get the Phillies in Red Sox, we can
work that, will work something out there. But if it
is the Phillies and Red Sox, we need to consummate
the bet. Okay, And what I can do is you
could go buy the best cheese steak you want in
South Carolina if you can find one, and.

Speaker 3 (19:50):
I'll my hot my daughter in Philly.

Speaker 2 (19:53):
Well that's okay too, but then she's gonna eat it.
You're not going to enjoy it. Think about that.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
Don't worry about that, all right, we.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
Could work it out. We'll work it out fair enough, Okay,
all right, thanks people.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
Talking to love your show. I've been listening. It's gotta be.
We retired thirteen years ago, so it was a couple
of years before then, so maybe I'm on your fifteen years.

Speaker 2 (20:18):
That's a long time that I love it.

Speaker 3 (20:20):
I love it.

Speaker 2 (20:21):
I appreciate it, and I hope you never stop. And
I wish your great health and in this upcoming year,
it's that's all I want. I want everybody to stay healthy.
I heard today.

Speaker 3 (20:32):
That you're out a way to get to Boston. Then
we can have a nice lunch.

Speaker 2 (20:38):
Absolutely, I've done that with others and I'd be honored
to do it with you, that's for sure, Pete, You'll
be well. Okay, I was going to tell you that
I heard today that a girl that I went to
grammar school with passed away. I'm not going to mention
her name because but it was someone who I knew
and I had reconnected with her. You know, it was

(20:59):
just as as you know when you're in grammar school,
you know, you know, you're not thinking about girls. You're
thinking about my little league team or your pony league
team and what you know, all of that. But she
was she was a really smart girl. And she ended
up a dean of a un at a university. And
I got reconnected with her through a mutual friend and

(21:21):
had a couple of phone conversations with her three or
four years ago, and life was going really well. And
I heard today that she passed away. So, you know,
with your friends, as David Bredner reminded us before he
left us, you know, tell you keep in touch with
your friends. And even if you you don't have to
be a talk show host or a guy listening in
South Carolina to develop a friendship, keep in touch with

(21:43):
your friends, simple as that. Because we'll all be going
to all right, Pete.

Speaker 3 (21:48):
Thank you much, my friend, go and listen to the
rest of the show and go to Red Sox and
we'll see what happens tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (21:57):
Yeah, it's going to be an interesting game, that's for sure,
and hopefully it'll be over by time nightside stars.

Speaker 3 (22:04):
Thanks might have to feed your little notices here and there.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
Thanks be talking Dan again.

Speaker 3 (22:12):
And as I said, if it's a national event or topic,
I call. If it's the local you know, you know,
whether they want to have the dining room tables al
Fresco up in North up in the North End. That
really doesn't affect me.

Speaker 2 (22:30):
All right, sir, I think we got it loud and clear. Thanks,
be to talk soon it comes to newscast.

Speaker 3 (22:36):
Okay, thanks for Claire step By.

Speaker 2 (22:38):
All right, we've got to take news. Got one line six,
one thirty. Feel free. This is kind of a real
free flowing. I don't want to call it open lines.
I just want to hear from you, as simple as that.
Coming back on night Side. Who's up next? We got
we got Tommy and Quincy coming up next, we got
We're representative in Idaho. We got this, we got Lowly

(23:00):
in San Diego. We got Dorian Deutsche and Worcester. We're
doing great. One line six, one seven, two, five, four,
ten thirty, join us, comment, criticism, congratulations, whatever you want.
We'll be back on Nightside after this.

Speaker 1 (23:15):
It's night Side with Dan Ray on w b Boston's
news Radio.

Speaker 2 (23:21):
Back to the college we go. Let's go to Tom and Quincy.
Tommy and Quincy, Hey, Tom, how.

Speaker 5 (23:24):
Are you hi?

Speaker 3 (23:26):
Mister Dan? How are you? Sir?

Speaker 2 (23:28):
I'm doing great? Thank you for calling in. What's your
thoughts on tonight?

Speaker 6 (23:32):
Well?

Speaker 5 (23:32):
My thoughts, uh, I'm just so happy and proud that
you're still on the air. You know something, we share
a lot of things in common, like athlete. I'm sorry
I started sometimes athletes at pure criticism. You went to
Boston Latin. I went to Catholic Memorial. You went on

(23:54):
to Boston State, A great school, great school. I know
you're from the Hyde Park area, Quincy, and I traveled
all that far away in that distance, right, but uh
and you was a picture in a goaltender that's like
real real, like the spotlights on you and you always
rose to the occasion football.

Speaker 2 (24:14):
You gotta be crazy to be a goaltender.

Speaker 5 (24:16):
Tom Well, my father was a goaltender. He played for
Charlestown High School. His nickname was red Light and they
know what did you know what that means?

Speaker 2 (24:26):
A lot of us had that nickname.

Speaker 5 (24:27):
Yes, yeah, yeah, you got a sunburn in the back
of your neck.

Speaker 3 (24:32):
Yes, sir, yes, sir, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 5 (24:35):
No, I just call him a checking back what you've
missed it. And you do such a good thing for
our community and boss, and it's a wonderful thing, Tom.

Speaker 2 (24:43):
I appreciate. I appreciate. Have you called the show before.
Is it's your first time.

Speaker 5 (24:48):
Yes, A couple of times before. I was a long showman.
So like when they were having the school and the strike,
I called in late Yeah, one time you had a
drug abuse substance abuse professional. I'm talking about recovery I
called into before, but no I doing. Are you doing

(25:09):
a lot better? And I really appreciate your program. It
goes nationwide thirty eight states, right some.

Speaker 2 (25:16):
People, Yes, sir, there are people in about thirty eight
states listening to your voice right now, which, again, you know,
it sounds to me like you're you're somebody who's recovering.
And I can't tell you how much I admire people
who have dealt with any form of addiction and they've
been able to get themselves out from under the thumb

(25:37):
of that addiction. Congratulations.

Speaker 3 (25:39):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 5 (25:40):
And also to us a very good friend of the
Brett family. I know Jimmy, I know Bill.

Speaker 2 (25:45):
I talked with Bill yesterday.

Speaker 5 (25:46):
I talked with her yesterday.

Speaker 2 (25:48):
Guy whatever whatever, he whatever, he calls so well his
daughters the program. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yeah, absolutely, she's
a great photographer. When Bill calls me, he'll he'll uh,
I'll say hello, and he'll say first time call her.
So that's our little inside joke. When you see him
say hello for me, Tom I appreciate and I so

(26:11):
appreciate you.

Speaker 5 (26:13):
Can you do me one favor?

Speaker 2 (26:14):
I'll try. What do you need?

Speaker 5 (26:16):
One shuttle to my brother, sure, and and and and
also one shuttle to Glenn and Brighton.

Speaker 2 (26:24):
Well you just you just did him. Legend you just did.
Your brother is geo excellent?

Speaker 5 (26:32):
And Glenn from Glenn from Brighton.

Speaker 2 (26:34):
Well right now, I'm sure Glenn is very proud that
someone is thinking about him. Tommy, thank you so much.
I'd love to love to hear back from you. Okay,
call more Roth right back at you, Tommy, thank you, pal,
all right soon. I love those calls. Those are enthusiastic people.
Laurie is an Idaho. Hey, Laurie, tough night for the

(26:57):
Red Sox. I know you're a big Red Sox fan there.

Speaker 7 (27:00):
Yeah, but you know we didn't expect anything less with
the Yankees. I mean we've come back down, you know,
from down three zero, so you know.

Speaker 2 (27:07):
We can go yeah. Yeah, it'll make it all that
much more sweeter Tomorrow night.

Speaker 8 (27:10):
It's going to be really interesting because they're using the
kid Conley early babies. They're using babies, yes, yes, Well,
what people don't know about him as he went to
West Point for a couple of years and.

Speaker 2 (27:22):
Really yeah, and then he he left there because he
I guess he felt that that his baseball, you know,
his pitching, had had improved, and he went to UVA,
got drafted by the Red Sox. And here he is
at twenty two or twenty three, starting in a very important,
like the most important game of the year.

Speaker 3 (27:40):
Huge, and he's going to be.

Speaker 2 (27:41):
Pitching against the kid who grew up in Walpole, Massachusetts. Yeah,
how about that? I talk about reversal role reversal here, just.

Speaker 7 (27:57):
Right, man, I die, I don't know what happened to
uh dayo to night the man that was poor Terry
Terry Francona. His pixie dust bowl must be running a
little bit low right now.

Speaker 2 (28:08):
But well did they did they lose both games? I
know they lost the first one to the Dodgers. Did
they lose the second game tonight that they eliminated?

Speaker 7 (28:18):
Oh god, Now I don't mean Francone. I always say that, Cora,
I'm talking about Chorra.

Speaker 8 (28:21):
Sorry, oh, Cora, Yeah, Well, francona core thing just never
like clicked in.

Speaker 2 (28:27):
Oh no, no, Francona is managing the Reds as you know. Uh,
and they're they're playing the Dodgers in the best two
out of three.

Speaker 7 (28:35):
And I did not know, I did not hear that.

Speaker 3 (28:36):
I misspoke. I meant Cora was playing with six dust.

Speaker 2 (28:39):
Well, I'll tell you he did a couple of things
which are interesting today. He gave the hook real early
to bail, which.

Speaker 7 (28:46):
Well, that's because he's burning up them. But he said
burning up the bullpen. So if everybody pitches one or
two innings, they're still available for tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (28:53):
Yeah, but sometimes it's tough to bounce back with Locke.

Speaker 7 (28:57):
Even from one or two innings.

Speaker 2 (28:59):
Yeah. Yeah, if you don't want to be using your pictures,
I mean in a series like this, obviously you have to.
But during the season, you know, for a guy to
get for somebody to get up in the bullpen, you know,
it takes realistically thirty thirty five pitches to get to
where you want to be, right and then if you
go in and you're throwing in as another twenty pitchers,

(29:20):
that's fifty five pitchers. Yeah, you don't want to do
too many back to backs in my opinion, But what
do I know.

Speaker 7 (29:27):
I mean, now do you know you do know? It
just it's kind of like it seems like he kind
of saved some of them for like, well, maybe they'll
have half an arm tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (29:35):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (29:35):
Well, yeah, I mean I think that that early, this
young pitcher will do a great job. He's been very
effective every game he pitched. And they'll have Harrison behind him,
they'll have they'll have somebody. Look, everybody came in tonight
did a pretty good job. They did they but yeah,
they hung in there. It was funny they didn't.

Speaker 7 (29:57):
They didn't use Chapman, which is huge.

Speaker 2 (29:59):
Right, but I think he was up at least stretch
and I don't know if he threw it all, but
I think he would have been ready if if Whitlocket
held on. But hey, yeah, yeah, we don't want to
turn it into a baseball show for now. That's yeah exactly.

Speaker 7 (30:13):
I want to say, first of all, your the first
the prior two hours were really informative. I love that Collins,
doctor Collins, and yes, he really defended his point well
and just next dude, man, that was really informative. I
kind of almost want to get that book, even though
it's like an economic numbers book. But he was very
informative and really interesting to listen to. So those were good.

Speaker 3 (30:35):
Well.

Speaker 2 (30:35):
I also with that, I want to sort of like
take the edge off of people. I don't want some
you know, eighty year old person thinking this, so scurity
check is not going to because a lot of people
rely upon those solid scurity checks to pay the rent
and buy the groceries.

Speaker 7 (30:49):
So that was And I found it interesting at the
day that I have Trend who's an immigration attorney, and
he had a meeting or here. It wasn't hearing I
mean this morning, and so I talked to earlier on
the day and they said, oh you had it, and
he said, oh yeah, immigration is fully fund It's self funded.
They're not canceled.

Speaker 3 (31:04):
Said okay, yeah, well yeah it's again.

Speaker 2 (31:08):
There will be. They'll always show like that there some
park somewhere in Wyoming that people couldn't get into or whatever.
And yeah, and hopefully hopefully you'll get resolved quickly and
we can we can get onto more important things. Laurie,
love your calls, you know that. Thanks Mike.

Speaker 7 (31:23):
No, most importantly, I'm just calling to acknowledge your first
day of your nineteen and I really appreciate it and
all the accolades that have gone before me. I second,
and you were amazing, And thank you for being here
on the radio with.

Speaker 2 (31:36):
Us, Laurie. I appreciate it so much, you know that.
Thank you, Grany very much. We'll talk to you very Thanks.

Speaker 3 (31:40):
Good for great one, good night.

Speaker 2 (31:42):
Stay Well all right, let me take a very quick break.
I got Lola coming up. I got Dori, I got
Jason and Waltham, Joe and Lynn. We'll be back on nightside.
The only line is six months is six months seven nine.

Speaker 1 (31:54):
You're on night side with Dan Ray on Boston's news radio.

Speaker 2 (31:59):
Okay, we're going to get everybody in. I promised. Lola
and San Diego. Lola, how are you? What's going on?

Speaker 3 (32:06):
Hi?

Speaker 6 (32:06):
Dan? So I'm making pesto, homemade pesto, because tomorrow I'm
going to Sedona for four days with the fourteen girls.
We're going to meditate and do sound healing and be
with nature.

Speaker 2 (32:20):
Good for you, Good for you. How long you've been
back in San Diego?

Speaker 6 (32:24):
A week today?

Speaker 2 (32:25):
A week today? And the weather must be beautiful out there.

Speaker 6 (32:29):
It's gorgeous right now.

Speaker 2 (32:30):
Yeah, well hopefully it'd be gorgeous for many months to come.

Speaker 6 (32:35):
Because I well, we'll see. But I've called to congratulate you,
and I just started listening to you during COVID. I
found you and I've been listening ever since.

Speaker 2 (32:49):
Well, you're one of my most loyal, loyal listeners. You're
a caller, you keep us posted on what's going on
in southern California. You're an integral part of my program,
and I mean that.

Speaker 4 (33:01):
Thank you.

Speaker 6 (33:03):
Dan. So, I know you've met a lot of celebrities,
but my experience because of you, I met the likes
of Ron Gardjett, Glenn Eileen, people people from Watertown that
I don't have their name. When we went to the
ball game over Thereds.

Speaker 2 (33:26):
Yeah, and.

Speaker 6 (33:28):
You know, I've really developed a good friendship with Ron.
We recently went to Singing Beach and he took a
million pictures. I only took about a hundred. We had
a great time. I didn't get to see Glenn or
anybody because I was so involved with, you know, the
sale of my mother's house, and.

Speaker 2 (33:49):
I know that you were dealing dealing with some issues,
and yeah, it's great. It's great that that that I
know people within Nightside who have big who have developed
frendship speaking and often because of some of the events
we do, whether it was the big Sunday brunch we
did earlier this year in Westwood or the couple of

(34:09):
a couple of games out in Worcester, and we'll do
more of those, and we'll try to time it so
that maybe you'll be back in our neck of the wards.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
Okay, sure, sure.

Speaker 6 (34:18):
So you know I saw Jazz over there in Medford
for the Bronx Tale, right, Yeah, I met him. I
met the kid from Newton. I think it's Peter Leoni
that painted the sign.

Speaker 3 (34:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (34:33):
You you went to some of those demonstrations this summer,
which was.

Speaker 3 (34:38):
Stuff.

Speaker 6 (34:39):
But this is all because of you. You know, I
went over there, I went to see jazz.

Speaker 2 (34:44):
And but you also have to be that outgoing personality, okay,
which which clearly you have an amazing personality. Yeah, and
it comes through clearly every night, your passion. You always
call with a passionate point of view. Uh Lola, I
got three more to try to sneak you do, so
we will talk soon.

Speaker 6 (35:03):
I just I just want to wrap it up just
real quick. I was on board with the Karen Reid thing,
and you were kind of well, we'll see when I
came back. When I came back in June, I met
Turtle Boy on the steps of the Deadham Court House.
I have pictures with him, Oh my god. Yeah, and

(35:23):
I wanted to do a standout at market basket for
the guy, just the gout fight and everything, but I
just couldn't get it together to go do that because
Walsingham has a big market bask That's.

Speaker 2 (35:35):
That's that's a great market basket, Lola. We will continue
our conversation next time, Thank you much, doctor Sue. All right,
let me get it. I'm going to get three people
in here real quickly, Dorry and Worcester. Hey, Dorry, how
are you tonight?

Speaker 9 (35:52):
Good Dan.

Speaker 2 (35:54):
Dory. We're a little tight on time, but I got
you in and I want to get two more. What's
on your line tonight.

Speaker 9 (36:00):
Dan Allen? Love more authors?

Speaker 2 (36:05):
One more authors, okay, any particular type of author or
just generally authors.

Speaker 9 (36:13):
Just generally okay, like historical fixtures for fiction and in general.
But I would love that, like it's the ten o'clock hour, okay.

Speaker 2 (36:24):
Well, you know, I still hope someday we'll get John
Grisham on here. He's he's like one of the authors.
And maybe we'll get the great William Martin on. He does,
he's done back Bay, we've had him on before. We'll
have him on pretty soon. Bill Brett's coming out with
another picture book, so we'll have Bill Brett on and

(36:46):
I'll keep you in mind for those that's a great
suggestion authors. All right, can consider consider it on the board.
Thank you, Dory, Okay, Toxic, good night, very quickly. Here
I'm going to Jason and Waltham. Jason, did that connection
work out the other day? I hope, yes, sir, Yes, sir.

Speaker 10 (37:05):
And that's what I called. I just called said thank you,
thank you very much. I connected with you on the
second stage reviewing materials. But the other thing we talked about,
I still having phoned the right people. Yeah, but I
think we'll have that conversation of air. But I just
want to give you your flowers, and I said, thank
you so much. I know you help a lot of people,

(37:27):
you connect with a lot of people. I don't know
what kind of memory you have, but you got a
great memory. Shout out to your assistant for all the
phone numbers you take down, for all the follow up
you do, and for all the connections you connect people with.

Speaker 3 (37:41):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 2 (37:42):
And God bless you well. Jason. I appreciate it, and
I do believe that you have a lot to offer
to that uh, that location that we talked about, UH.
And I just hope that that little miscommunication of a
week ago got resolved and you've had a chance to
talk to some people over there and keep me posted

(38:02):
as to your progress.

Speaker 10 (38:03):
Okay, yeah, said we had a zoom call. I'll send
it a couple of emails and I'm waiting by for
the email sometime next week.

Speaker 2 (38:09):
So very much, Jason, thank you. It's wonderful that I
can I had the ability to sometimes make a connection
for someone, and why would I not do that for
for someone of your character and your caliber. I'm honored
to be able to help and work work with you
and get you into a place that get you into

(38:31):
a place where you're going to be helping people. So
you know, that's that's what's the beauty of this one.
This is when I take a great deal of pride
in to be honest with you helping people. You're going
to be the one.

Speaker 3 (38:44):
You've got a friend that you never made before.

Speaker 2 (38:46):
Right back at you, Right back at you, Jason. Okay,
thanks man, I talk soon. You goodnight. Okay, we're gonna
wrap it up here, Joe and Lynn. Joe, you have
the honor of the final call on our first show
of year.

Speaker 11 (38:59):
Number nineteen, to congratulate you and say, Hidi Glenn. He's
a friend, and I wanted to talk thank doctor Collins.
I liked him. I wanted to mention the government shut down.
I have bixed feelings on it. Maybe it's good, maybe
it isn't. These congressmen Dan, and they get away with
so much. I've heard through other sources, you know, your
talk show, not just yours. Others said there are people

(39:21):
that are working in that government offices. I even heard
a lady call up. I'm not going to say who
were where?

Speaker 2 (39:26):
Thank you, Thank you for not plugging other talk shows.
Go ahead.

Speaker 11 (39:30):
No, no, she just sits there and gets her check
and she quit her job. She says, I can't do that.
I would have gotten one hundred and twenty thousand dollars
a year on a pension, and her colleagues say, just
take it to the bank. That's ferocious, that's disgraceful. We
don't need that. We need to help people like you
were just talking about.

Speaker 2 (39:47):
Absolutely, we're all on this road. Of life. And you
know what, we got to help each other along. Simple
as that. Joe as always, thank you very much for
your loyalties at the program over the years, and we
will talk soon.

Speaker 11 (40:00):
Take care of thanks by thank you right back at
you all right.

Speaker 2 (40:03):
We are done for that, and I want to thank Marita,
want to thank Rob. I want to thank all of you,
particularly those of you who took the time to call
in the last hour. Phones are still ringing. Sorry, we'll
get you. We'll get you next time. Back tomorrow night,
for sure, Marita will be no. Let's see tomorrow. I
do pregame at four thirty. I will see you on
Facebook right after the show. As a postgame of tonight's show,

(40:26):

all dogs, all cats, all pets go to heaven. That's
where my pal Charlie Ray is, who passed fifteen years

believe you'll see them again. Hope to see again tomorrow
night at Nightside. Please tell you your friends about Nightside.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
