Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right here in the WBZ newsroom, I am joined
(00:02):
by Boston Calling co founder Mike snow Here. We go fast,
approaching crunch time for Boston Calling. Exciting time of year, right,
Christmas Eve. Big news on the stage, a little different
this year. Tell us about it.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
A massive single stage instead of the red and green,
We're going to go just to green and Yeah, we'll
make it so that both bands and you know, one's
playing one setting up, you know, so the downtime will
be minimal.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
You'll be you'll be pretty excited.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
I'm pretty excited.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
So a good way to keep it moving. That's so
you guys are always thinking that, I know, with these festivals,
it's going to be snappy and tidy. I got a
nice I had the opportunity last year to actually walk
back there and see you guys kind of building even
last year's stage. That is not an easy project. No,
the lineup, I know you guys are always proud of
the lineup. This year is no exception. Great taste of
(00:47):
mega acts, local acts. What are you most excited about?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
I fell in love with Megan from work, a local
band play on the Orange stage on Friday. We did
some work with Latrell James, same thing, same stage, same day.
TLC was awesome. Assarm last fall. That's gonna be fantastic.
And then the Tea Paine Chet set from Coachella was
absolutely amazing, So I can't wait to see that. And
then I mean, Public Enemy come on Sunday night with
Public Enemy.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
It's pretty cool. That must be when you guys drop
that announcement for the first time. Is it like, is
everybody just watching? Like you just feel like the feedback
and you know, it's just see what people are saying.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
Yes and no, you know we watch or you don't
care y? Yeah, well we watch. How many people sign
up for like the alerts to buy tickets and whatnot. Sure, listen,
social is a dangerous place. Oh, I hear as many
lovers as there are haters.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Yeah, no doubt about that. But okay, cool so and
you landed some big names as always. But you guys
really take a lot of pride in kind of spreading
out like you know, you get some country, you got
folk music, you got rap, you get hip hop, you
got rock, you get pop, you get everything.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Yeah, we we don't really try to do it. It
kind of comes together, right, You book a headliner of
a certain genre. So then you look at the other
stage and say, okay, well, what can I give the
person who might not like country?
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Right, And you know you do that with the first
three or four bands, and then the rest you kind
of slot in. You get a feeling about some buddy,
you know, Remy Wolf, you know, goth Babe, things like that.
You know, you can get funky and you know you
want to turn people onto new music. That's what a
festival is about to us.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
So yeah, you see the lineup, you don't know maybe
a third of it, maybe half of it. So that's
that's why you have discovery of new music.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yeah, it's such a great thing. That's why people love
attending festivals. Right. The food and drink is another reason
why people love doing that. You got some old staples back,
and I remember when you guys released the list, it's
like there were some new ones on there too, which
I thought was pretty cool. Sure.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
I mean, we have Zinniken's and we have a Smokeshop,
barbecue and Tasty Burger. There are some of our veterans Roxies,
grilled cheese and Mazela. But yeah, then bring it in.
Penny packers, sally A, Pete's, Flip the Bird off the
North Shores, get some chicken sandwiches.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Rolling loads or something.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Yeah. Yeah, you can ice cream from foamu oh wow,
Joan Chang and flour. So yeah, it's we got twenty
seven different vendors I think in total.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Wow, you guys must take a lot of pride in
like becoming a summer staple now around here. Like this
is like people are either talking about there's not much
talk about Moorial Day weekend except Boston coll around here.
It's pretty much a simple as that.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Yeah, we like we like to kick off the summer
with everybody before everybody kind of leaves, right the kids
are still in school, colleges or some in some out.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
A lot of years for you here, that's uh, what's
the biggest change. I mean you've changed venues of course,
but been on quite a progression.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Yeah, I mean this year will be the biggest, you know,
logistical site change. So really excited about launching that. And yeah,
just just learning you know the whole area, learning the site,
learning how to work with with vendors. And we've got
some of the best vendors around now, so it gets easier,
you know, over the years. So that's been fun.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Yeah, I bet it doesn't work if you have poor
relationships with vendors.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Listen, I have been the guy throwing trash bags into
the into the dumpster, like running to make doors, right,
we try to like never ever miss doors. That's like
a real pride point of ours. At one pm, those
gates better open.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
It's gotta work like clockwork, that's right. And you're obviously
a diehard music fan, so this is uh, it's work,
but passion, I see it is.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
I wish I got to see a little bit more
of the music. We all take turns there. Sometimes you
just hey, I'm going to see this band, you know,
call me if you need me, and hopefully if everything's
running smooth, you just you can sit there and be
a fan for a while.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
That sounds like a call me if you need me,
but really don't call me.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Yeah, just give me this half an hour.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Please, jeez. Boston calling co founder Mike Snow. I have
a great weekend. It's coming quickly, and to have a
great three days of music looks like a blast.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Thanks, we'll see there.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
And Drew Mahaland in WBZ newsroom Boston,
