That's the sound of some eighty volunteers just before heading
out to reach students who have a history of being
chronically absent. BPS Superintendent Mary Skipper says that's about ten
more than last year.

One of the things the Mayor and I have both
done is to really talk about this being a village
and that it takes a village to be able to
embrace our Boston Public schools and our students. And I
think people are responding to that call.

which ended with a guarantee that they would be at school.
Still much work to be done, as the current absentee
rate in BPS elementary schools runs in the high twenties
and high forties in the high school level in Roxbury.
