Former State Hospital In Medfield Will Soon Become Arts Center

Dozens of abandoned brick buildings dot the grassy landscape, and
I'm about to enter one of them, a giant chapel.
This is the to the Bell Tower with permission, of course.
This sprawling former mental hospital campus in Medfield is the
future site of the Belleford's Art Center. Gene Minio is
the executive director.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
With the question of would people come to an abandoned
hospital campus for cultural experience, it's been a resounding yes.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
The center is converting the chapel in a nearby building
into a huge performing art space, and the rest of
the buildings will be renovated and preserved as housing. They've
been running out too our events here for three years
without the trappings of an indoor space.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
There's no utilities on the campus, so we're doing everything
with generators and doc tape.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
That'll soon change. They hope to have nationally touring artists
at the center when they open in the next couple
