Gen Z Seemingly Prefers Paying By The Drink Instead Of Starting Bar Tab

The concept of running up a tab at a bar
has existed for hundreds of years, maybe more, but maybe
not for long.

Not everyone does. I'd say it's here. We noticed maybe
twenty percent startups.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Patrolovsky has been tending bar for twenty years. He says
a staggering eighty percent of young people who come in
the bar pay for each drink up front, a phenomenon
being noticed elsewhere too.

He says this really started.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Becoming popular within the last two years, and it could
sometimes be an annoyance.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
I like to keep it fun and give a ribbing
sometimes or I'm like, sure, you don't want to open
the tab this time.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
There's a lot of speculation as to why this is happening.
He has a couple ideas, including that this generation came
of age during the pandemic.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
The younger generations didn't have that experience of going out
with maybe like older brother or older sister or even
family that like goes to bars and open stabs.
