Gulf Stream Orphan Season Begins For New England Aquarium

I'm staring into a fish tank at the New England
Aquariums Animal Care Center and quinsy.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
So this butterfly fish is here because we participate in
a local field collecting effort that we call the Gulf
Stream Orphan Project.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
Mike O'Neill with the New England Aquariums has other tropical
fish like the short big eyes can be found around
New England and the Cape this time of year, and
that's because the Gulf Stream moves warm water up from
the tropics and it's toasty enough for a temporary stay.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Typically for our season, we tend to go out and
look throughout September. That's sort of the peak for southern
New England.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
I would say community scientists like scuba divers, fishers or
really anybody who likes fish trek tropical finds this time
of year through a website called i Naturalist, and that
helps scientists go out and find them and study the
natural phenomenon.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
The thing I love about this is you never know
exactly what you're gonna find. I think over one hundred
different species have been reported.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
So far this year. There's been around five hundred reports
