Longtime Boston Liquor Store Near Northeastern Looks To Reopen Its Doors

Huntington Wine and Spirits had been around for kind of
a long time.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
We've just been a major icon of the neighborhood because
of our longevity.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
The liquor store near Northeastern opened just after Prohibition, but
after about ninety years in business, it closed down this
past March. Now, owner Stephen Rubin is trying to keep
the historic liquor license for the store alive, and we have.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Such a following. I think anywhere we go people would
know us and remember us.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
The city Licensing Board says the owners of the license
need to actively be selling liquor to keep it. If
nothing changes, they want to take it away. He's planning
to ask for a six month extension to open a
new store nearby. I asked how he plans to keep
it afloat this time.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
So we're going to try to focus on items that
aren't readily available in other stores.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Things like half bottles of wine, soju, and ice cream.
