Mansfield Middle Schooler Has Sights Set On Engineering/Shipbuilding

Thirteen year old Caleb Huffiness and his friend turned heads
on Fulton Pond one sunny afternoon as they cruised across
the water in the Aerial, a wooden motor boat Huffiness
built at home by himself. He already had experience working
with his dad crafting different projects in a makeshift workshop
with two by fours in plywood, but building the Aerial,
complete with a four horsepower motor involved him learning new skills,

like how to work with fiberglass.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
I've never worked with something like that before, so it
was a lot of looking up videos and figuring it out.
I had a few failed attempts that all of it
ripped apart a few times, had to peel it off
start again, but eventually I got it.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
His mom, Samantha says he's always been interested in building.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
When he was little, he never used to want to
follow lego directions. He kind of just wanted to do
everything himself and be creative, so I was not surprised
when he wanted to start building boats.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Huffiness says he hopes to become a mechanical engineer someday.
