Mass. Woman Stuck Paying $20,000 After A Bat Flew In Her Mouth

So because I got stuck and I started screaming, it
went into my mouth, and I don't know what part

That's Erica Kahn, a Westward woman who was stargazing with
her father in Arizona when the wing mammal in question
swooped in for a close encounter. That meant rabies shots
for sure, but to add to the complications.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
And unfortunately, I had just lost my job and it
was like eleven days or so after I lost my benefit.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
She elected not to sign up for Cobra, thinking she
was young and healthy and it was expensive without income.
That turned out to be more costly.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Sixteen thousand, three hundred or so, and then the next
three doses ranged from five hundred to two thousand, so.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
All told, she's paying twenty grand out of pocket. She
says it's on her, but that medical care shouldn't be
