Newton Celebrates Indigenous Peoples' Day

Each traditional food, listen to the music, watch cultural dancers
twist and turn to the beat of a drum, and
most importantly, spark a conversation. That's what it's all about
here in Newton, celebrating and uplifting indigenous people.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
We have twenty eight to twenty five different representatives from
different nations and different parts of the world, not only
the United States.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
That's Iowatha Brown, a member of the Arrogancet tribe in
Rhode Island. He says they had to make a last
minute move indoors to Newton North High School, but canceling
wasn't even an option. He says, the Arrogancett tribe sees
rain is a form of spiritual cleansing.

As we come in here and we share our ceremonies,
it kind of makes us understand and appreciate each other
a little bit more.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
I found Lyndon Jenkins with the group Massachusetts Catholics for
Indigenous Rights at one booth.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
And also just getting to know more people. By showing
up at these things, we build friendships and relationships, which
is really important in Newton.
