Somerville To Launch New Food Waste Collection Pilot Program

The city is partnering with a service called Garbage to Garden,
which picks up foods grass from residence doorsteps and delivers
them to farms to be composted. Somerville's environmental policy manager,
Kate Crowley tells me only certain residents will be eligible
for the pilot program, which is expected to start this fall.

First, they have to be here in East Somerville, and
they also have to be in buildings of six units
are fewer and not already receive curbside composting service.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Director of the Mayor's Office of Sustainability and Environment, Christine Blaze,
says the pilot will cost somewhere between three hundred and
three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Three hundred thousand is dedicated to our vendor to provide
the service, and the remainder would be for you know,
things like marketing and then that sort of support, and
for the for the bins and the liners in the
startup kit too.

There's also another program in the works that would create
composting drop off sites around the city. Jeremy Russ WBZ,
