Suffolk County Sheriff Tompkins Pleads Not Guilty To Extortion Charges

Outside Boston Federal Court. Sheriff Stephen Tompkins appeared before the
press silent as his lawyer Martin Weinberg did the talking.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Steve Tompkins informed Judge Kelly that he's not guilty of
the pending charge that was brought.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
He's accused of coercing a local cannabis company to sell
him fifty thousand dollars worth of stock and then demanding
a refund when the investment didn't pan out. Tompkins has
been the sheriff in Suffolk County for more than a decade.
He's frequently spotted with Democratic Party leaders.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
It is my expectation, strong expectation, that a year or
so from now, will be walking out that door, and
then mister Thompskins will be found not guilty.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
The Sheriff's made no indication that he'll resign. The maximum
penalty for the charges twenty years in prison and a
two hundred and fifty thousand dollars fine for each of
the two counts. He's next due in court for hearing
