Winter Hill Residents Celebrate Demolition Of Abandoned Grocery Store

And with that, an excavator cut a ribbon and started
tearing down an old star market that's been abandoned for
seventeen years in Summerville's Winter Hill. The demolition will make
way for the new two ninety nine Broadway development. Couple
add over three hundred units of housing, including half being
affordable retail spaces and an outdoor plaza. City Councilor Jesse
Klington represents Winter Hill and has lived here almost his
whole life. He says this new development will be a

game changer for one of the city's less developed neighborhoods.

I always imagined like, rather than this be a sort
of a thoroughfare, like a you know, a place where
people are just driving through, it would actually we could
actually have a development or create a space where community
could come together.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Mayor like Jake Wilson, lives in winter Hill, so he's
thrilled to see the building come down. He says this
development can be the blueprint to address the city's affordable
housing shortage.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
We have a goal of getting to twenty percent affordable
in Summerville. Mathematically, we all know we'll never get there
if every development is that twenty percent minimum inclusionary zone.
It will not happen right. That's why we need projects
like this
