Join Charles Beeker, Indiana University professor and director of the IU Center for Underwater Science, to talk about shipwrecks, underwater treasures and resources, and the surrounding web of related ethical and legal issues. From Indiana shipwrecks (yes! Indiana has shipwrecks and an interesting maritime history) to the Titanic, the Monitor, and Columbia's San José, each historical object is unique, but all serve to lure us into the deep, to learn their stories or investigate what lies beneath. Charlie discusses the controversy over the San José's cargo, estimated at $1.7 billion, currently the subject of a number of lawsuits (no surprise), and this summer's tragedy of the submersible that imploded while traveling down to investigate the Titanic. A expert in diving and underwater research, as well as the technological advances in this work, Charlie has also strived for decades to recognize and preserve these artifacts and explores today on the show the various considerations that must go into underwater treasure hunting. A fascinating episode about hidden but compelling things.
