Speaker 1 (00:05):
Gold, a sides podcast. The story's behind just great rock.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
It's Gold. I'm Tracy Donaldson, very excited to welcome a
couple of legends to the studios Affternoon, Sir Graham, Henry
and Howard and Nico. Now, before we get talking about
the TV show Match Fit. Graham, you're just saying you're
a huge fan of our station Gold. You love your
classic rock, but your favorite artist the late Ray Columbus.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
You were saying, yeah, yeah, yeah, oh my god, there
was such a good song.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Well, icons, it's incredible to have you both in here.
TOWARDA and Sir Graham Henry. Did Match Fit new season
starts this week? No, you're back. You've had a season off?
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Yes, I have. We had two seasons and then they
had a rugby league season last year good season, right,
and now a combination which has been fantastic. The league
guys are very good.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
I've watched the promo. It looks brilliant. I mean two
titans of your codes rugby and league Match Fit season four.
I mean any show that makes it to season four.
You know you're onto something really good, don't you.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
Oh well, I think it's the talent that comes onto
the show ted and I were just helping the boys out.
But Tracy has been great because we've had some titans
from rugby league and rugby union and the competition has
been fierce this year.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
And it's a great message, isn't it a great message
for middle aged men? Keep yourself fat both physically and
mentally mentally, and there's a huge correlation between them, the
physical fitness and the mental fitness. So if you get
yourself right physically, it's good for the head.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Well, let me just say that for anyone that hasn't
seen Match Fit. Obviously at famously shed's light on players
shedding weight, which we all love to watch, but also
just as importantly as their mental health, doesn't it post
their professional careers, which has just become such a big
talking point over the last few years.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
Yeah, I think one of the big challenges that we've
talked about and we see is players playing at the
highest level once they finished from the limelight and the
challenges that they've gone through. Tracy is very inspiring and
motivating to see the boys share their journeys and what
they've been through so not only physically, but the mental
side of it and how they being able to overcome
those challenges.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Because when you have been at the peak like these
guys have in terms of fame and fitness, they've got
to readjust you know, to a lot, don't they when
the foot is finished, Like how do you transition to
just being back and rather.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
The team things really important? And I think the message
is there, you know, to work with your mates to
get fitter. And these guys have been working with their mates.
They're still doing it. They're still on a WhatsApp every day,
a lot of motivational stuff coming through on that, so
they're still working. But the big thing is you don't
want to let your mates down, so do it with others,
get ftter with others, your mates.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
But to someone who is listening right now, who is
perhaps quite isolated, they might live quite rural. We have
a lot of farmers listen to us and that maybe
they don't have a big friend network around them, you know,
to go to training or even to catch up with
what is a piece of advice that you would give them,
just to take that first step to start feeling better.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
Yeah, one of the big things. And I do a
bit of work with the Rural Support Trust because I
live on a farm and do some farming stuff, but
really just waking up in the morning, and if you
are on a farm, try and get off the farm,
you know, on your days off, go and do something
something different, going to the city, maybe go surfing. There's
a whole lot of things in the farming network that
people are doing. And if you are isolated, you know,
wake up every morning and just be grateful for what
(03:14):
you have. I think you know that mindfulness, that gratefulness.
The other things that we talk about, Ted and the
show is around you know, working together, being your teammates.
But if you can't do that, hey, you just have
a good support network around you also.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
And help put very good answer to very good very good.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
As because a lot of people are alone, an't.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
That impressed with? I hope they're listening.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Thanks to It's very enlightening though it really was welcome Trasa.
How quick typically does it take for the guys on
the show to be authent because obviously they're aware of
their reputation and how they used to look and probably
still do a pair of fans, so it must be
hard literally for them to have to take their shirt
off in front of the whole country and get on
the scales.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
Yeah, they got very vulnerable. Yeah, and they've shared the
with the nation their challenges, which is I think the
key to the show. You know, they've showed a lot
of resilience these guys, they physically and mentally, and to
be vulnerable in front of the nation is difficult because
they were heroes, yes, but you know they came a
long way, so they've got some confidence and built that
confidence over fifteen weeks. You need to watch the show Tracy,
(04:16):
you know, oh I do, well, it would be fantastic
and you just show how these guys change and it's
a big message there for the rest of the nation.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
Yeah, I think one of the big things Ted for
you know, a lot of our Maldi and PACIFICA players
out there. We're at the back end of the statistics
and health statistics, you know, heart disease, you know, a
whole lot of diabetes.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Apologize for European no.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
No, no, that's all right. But it is a challenge
for the boys because you know, once you finished, you
have the chocolate bars, you have the chips, you know,
and you get out of that routine. So coming back
on the show Tracy was really great for the boys
to actually uplift and help each other through that, and
as Ted said, they're still doing that today, so you know,
it's been a fantastic transition and they wouldn't been able
(05:00):
to do it without their mates.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
It's interesting that you raise that point, because do we
see any return players from previous seasons who have gotten there,
you know, acts together again and gotten back in shape,
and then do they let it go again? Because it's
all we all do.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
That, everybody's human. But they get into a into a system,
you know, they get into a routine and they stick
to their routine and they've got that mental strength to
do that. They can do that well.
Speaker 4 (05:24):
One of the boy is pretty weepoo. This is his
third time back on the show, so you know he's
been through three times now. He makes them, He makes
the awesome trends.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Did the same in the All Blacks. You know, we
had to get pretty special special work just to get
himself and good neck again. But that was s s Perry.
But once he got himself and good neck, he was great.
One of the best All Blacks ever, really is.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
And what about you guys, as mentors coaches, do you
physically take on board all the training does buy Osmosa,
so you walk in the walk alongside them there.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
Of course, just take a look at me. Take a
look at me, Tracy, have a look handed. He's looking
good for seventy eight. He's better, better shape than Joe Biden,
are you guys?
Speaker 3 (06:01):
Thank you very much for they go down there.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
I love that.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
Better than Joe Biden. He's just pulled out of the race.
Thank you very much for that's a better compliment.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Hey, you guys must be excited for the Olympics.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Eh oh. I think we've got a good team. Yeah,
I think they'll do the country proud. I can't wait.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Rugby sevens are up first, aren't they, like really early
on Thursday morning?
Speaker 4 (06:23):
Yeah. Well, I think the girls, you know, I've got
a good chance and the boys fantastic athletes that we
have played there.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
We have a lot of pressure on the girls and
I don't know, they've done exceptionally well. And if you
were going to retire pusha Woodman for example. She's going
to retire after the sevens, the expectation will be massive
and I think that's been the biggest challenge for them.
Of course, and Australia are good, which is annoying as annoying, Yes, annoying,
but those would be the two big teams. I think.
Speaker 4 (06:48):
Yeah, I'm looking forward to the rowers as they always
in What's our kayaker? Lisa Carrington? I can't wait for
her to bring home.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
A few Number one sports person, Lisa is amazing her head.
If you could put their head on all our athletes,
we'd win a lot of gold medals. She fent mentally.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Oh, really excited to see it. Of course, the opening
ceremonies underway. Isn't it five thirty Saturday morning? Coming down
the River Seine rather than into a stadium this time
the athletes.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
Yeah, I saw one of the incredible was it the
Meal of Paris or someone swimming in the river the
other day just testing showing that it is match fite.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
I do think they were drinking it. You're gut swimming guys.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
What a tree to have you in here. You're both
absolute icons, honestly. An all star cast of Union League
Legends Match for Union versus Le premiers on three and
three now tomorrow night at seven.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Thank you so much for coming in pleasure, Tracy, Please
thank you.
