Speaker 1 (00:12):
Welcome back to Point Game. I'm CJ. Toldono and I'm
joined here with my co host Isaiah Thomas. I T
how you feeling.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
I'm good, I'm good. Ready to talk some hoops. Man,
you already know what time it is.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
I feel like, you know, we're nearing Christmas, the holiday time,
Like the season is really ramping up. We're finding out
what teams are good with, what players are having a
good start to this season, and who we to look
forward to come All Star break. But we got a
jam pack show this week. You know, as this as
this show evolves, we're trying to do things bigger and
better each episode. And so this week we actually have
(00:45):
a very special guest, our first guest on the show,
one of your good friends, Evan Turner, joined us for
a dope interview that we recorded in Boston last week.
And then we're going to talk about everything that's going
on in the NBA from a special player who is
calling it after twenty one seasons, Chris Paul, who I'm
excited to hear, you know, your stories with him and
your thoughts on that sure. And then we're also going
(01:08):
to be debuting a new segment with you called No
days off that it really kind of embodies what you're
all about in the brand Slow Grind. So I'm excited
to getting that with you. But I wanted to open
up the show with Chris Paul. He announced the other
day that he, after twenty one seasons, is going to retire,
So I just want to hear your general reaction of that,
Like I feel like he was another one of the
(01:30):
smaller guards that were making waves out of the gate,
just like you were, and you guys probably had some
battles together. So I wanted to get your reaction on
CP that news in his sort of career.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
First off, you know, shout out to CP, one of
the best guards that ever played a game, one of
my mentors, somebody I looked up to, you know, in
high school and college and got to build a relationship
throughout our careers, dating back to when I was in
college when I first got invited to one of his
elite camps, was able to build that relationship. Then then
(02:03):
years down the line, when I became a pro, he
invited me back to mentor the high school and college
kids like when I was in high school and college.
So you know, you got to give a big shout
out to Chris Paul. Like I said, He's helped me
in so many ways. He's transcended the game in so
many ways. So you got to give him his flowers.
Twenty one seasons for somebody's just you know, just touching
(02:27):
six foot like that, that's that's amazing feet. Not too
many players can say they did it like him, and
he's He's made a very big impact on the game.
And like I said, I can't give Chris Paul his
flowers enough because he deserves it.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
And shout out to see Pepe for real.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Yeah, man, I you know, just looking back on it,
you know, he came from that that legendary two thousand
and three draft class, and he was he's always going
to be like incredible career Hall of Fame. But I
will definitely think about him as one of the biggest
what if players, you know, because he came so close
to getting some championships. I mean, we all remember he
was supposed to go over to the Lakers, that Dwight
(03:05):
Howard team, and Adam or not. David Stern vetoed.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
That there's no superstar that gets traded in this league
unless the owner says go ahead with it, and in
the case of New Orleans, the representative of the owner said.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
That's not a trade we're going to make. But that
representative was you, if I'm correct, and was that the
right move to make? Buy a ticket and see, we'll
see how it works out.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
And it's like, you know, team up with Kobe and
d and all like who wouldn't who would have known?
And then you know, I don't know if you have
any like with the Rockets too, we all forget like
he went that Rockets team went seven games with the Warriors,
but he actually he had gotten hurt in Game five
and didn't even get to play those other two games.
So it's like, if he was healthy, they might have
been in the finals that year. So where do you
(03:50):
put sort of CP in in the what if conversation
of h could he have won a title?
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Or what do you think about that?
Speaker 2 (03:57):
I think that the title thing is is tough because
there's so many, like different things that have to happen,
Like you gotta have a lot of luck, your health
got to be on your side.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Obviously, your team gotta be good.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
And he's been on a few teams, has been really
good and been probably championship favorites, just things didn't line
up whether he got hurt. I know there was a
few playoffs postseasons that where he got hurt. I remember
he messed up his hand a few times, his thumb,
and then like the biggest one you said where I
think they were up three to.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
Two against the Warriors and he towards hamstring.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
It was something. It was something to that significance of
where like he was that close. If he didn't get
hurt that year, they probably would have won it. And
then there was another year they were up three to
one against the Rockets when he was on the Clippers
and they lost that series. So there was there is
a lot of what ifs, but that definitely doesn't take
(04:55):
away from what he brought to the game of basketball.
Probably are our lab that's true point guard is going
to play the game as of right now as the
game is changing and they're trying to go away from
the traditional point guard.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
Man. He's one of my favorites ever. Bro.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
We've had so many battles, so many times where we
got into it because we were just ultimate competitors. And
then after the game, I'm hugging and kissing his mom.
He's hugging and kissing my parents. So like he's an
amazing mentor. Man. I can't say enough about him. Am
I surprised he's retiring. I am because he loves the
(05:34):
game so much and like a guy that played all
eighty two games in his twentieth year. Obviously, obviously he's
in the situation to where you know, he's not playing
a lot.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
He's in and out of rotation.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
So that's probably a first time in his career that
he's dealt with this, and it's probably tough as well.
And then at the end of the day, he's missing
time with his family, which is most important, so I
understand where his head's at. I just always want to
give Chris Paul his flowers. He's another small guard that
paved the way for so many smaller guys like myself
and everybody after us. One of the most down to
(06:09):
earth superstars you ever you know, interact with, and like
I said, shout out to CP Hall of Famer first
ballot going down is one of the best to ever
do it.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
I also just want to say to me, he might
be one of the greatest NBA journeymen. Like like wherever
he went an impact and you know, watching the Thunder
win last year, I was kind of like, man, they
should they should show some appreciation for CP that one
year when when you know, Shay was new and in
Dort and he got into the playoffs that first time,
and that was sort of the sign of like, you know,
(06:41):
Thunder and Sam Presty's plane is playing out and like
having that that VET, that veteran presence there. Because now
s g A and those Door and all those guys
in Crusoe they're they're the vets now, but like CP
was a VET back then when they made the playoffs
that one year, So that can all start with veteran
presence at some of these younger teams.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
As we talked about a.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Lot, and not to cut you off, like he definitely
started that in Okay see. They didn't know what winning
was about when he got there. I remember when he
got traded there, people were thinking he was going to
get a buyout, not wanting to go there, okay see,
and he really changed that whole culture. And that's what
a guy like Chris Paul is going to do. He's
an ultimate professional, somebody that takes the game super serious.
(07:22):
So he's laid the foundation for guys like SGA and
all those guys to follow him. So obviously they won
a championship without him, but he laid the foundation on
how to be a pro, how to come in each
and every day and take care of your business, and
ultimate leadership in every situation he's been a part of.
He hasn't won the championship, but he's changed the trajectory
(07:44):
of those franchises no matter what, throughout his whole career.
So that says a lot about a guy like Chris Paul.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Incredible, excited to watch the rest of us this year,
his little retirement toward going on. So I want to
shift topics here. We've talked about NBA beefs a little
bit here. I don't think it's anything too serious. But
we saw the Mavericks and Grizzlies played a couple of
days ago, and there were some words back and forth
between John Morant and Klay Thompson. Just to recap here,
(08:15):
I think the quotes were from Jos said to uh Jah,
who's hurt? Who was on the bench injured, But he
had said to Klay Thompson that you're a bum now,
you know, kind of comparing him to his Clay's a legend, right,
one of the best shooters ever. We call him a
bum now. And then you know, Clay had a sort
of a long quote towards it, just like kind of
(08:36):
saying like, Jah should we should be seeing more of
Jaw playing, talking about more of Jaw's you know, playing career,
and and and he's not taking accountability.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
He's been running his mouth for a long time and
it's funny to run your mouth on your on the bench.
It's kind of the story of his career so far,
just leaving us one more. You know, we all want
to see him out there and do his best, but
he's just been but a lot of other stuff the
(09:04):
way of that.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
You know, I find some truth in that.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
I'm curious on both you know, not on both sides,
but like the bump thing that Clay, Clay had a
legendary time in the Warriors. Now he's on, you know,
the end of his career, his career but a few
more years. But I'm curious to hear what you thought
about you know, this this growing beef between those two.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
First off, I don't think it's beef at the end
of the day, Like I'm I'm I'm a professional trash talk,
So I believe that's just hoop talk. Like okay, like
John called him a bum yet, I mean, you can
call him that, but Clay Thompson is not a bum.
He's first bout the Hall of Fame for sure, four
time champion, like the list can go on about the
(09:43):
accomplished accomplishments he's had throughout his career. Even John knows that.
But I just think that was just hoop talk. Like
he was. He was big up in his shooter too
with saying that, you know, we got the best shooter
in the NBA, not the guy they played for the war,
So I think he's just talking best. And Clay Thompson
is a little older, so he took it to where like, Okay,
(10:06):
we're gonna be a little professional about this.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
Yeah, you've known what I've done.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
We need to see you out here on the court,
not just whether it be hurt, whether it be on
the bench, whether it be you know, he's been suspended
a few times. Obviously, we know about that. So he
took a little dig that might hurt as well. So
I think they both had their sides to it all.
I always say to any professional, any guy that's in sports.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
He talks mess especially who just keep it hoop.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
If we're gonna talk, if we're gonna talk our little
back and forth, just keeping hoop and don't don't allow
it to get personal. So I think I think it's
all funny games. Clay probably took it a little more serious.
I don't know if John's super serious. I don't know
those guys in terms of being in the locker room,
if they like each other or not. But that's hoop talk.
(10:57):
Like where I come from. I'm I'm from the Landa.
You know Gary Payton, seeaut the Sonics. To wear anything,
nothing's off limits. So what he said the bum thing,
I would have just said, you know, look at me.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Come back to that.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Look, I'm not even gonna say the rings because we
know about the rings. My comeback to that is, you
think your shooter's the best? Asks him who he looked
up to when he was when he was going through
his journey, Asked him who he wanted to be like,
not saying it was me, but I know I had
a big influence on his career.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
I'm saying stuff like that. See I'm like I told you.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
I'm a professional trash talker, So I'm locked in and
when anybody's talking mess. But I've been in josh shoes
where I've been hurt and on the bench, and I've
been that guy talking shit too, So like I get it.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
It's all fun and games. I don't think it's personal.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
From the outside looking in, somebody might have took it personal,
but you know, that's the game of basketball. And if
you can't talk mess while you play, they are before
and after games. The only thing I say to any
trash talker, I say, be consistent. Talk when you're down,
talk when you're up. Don't just talk when things are
sweet for you, things.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
Are going well.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
I remember Michael Jordan's saying that, like talk when the
when the when the series is zero zero, don't talk
when you're up to all up one oh, and you
got a little you know, you got a little.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
Ahead of steam, and you just talk talk at all times.
So I would.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
I'm I'm happy to see where that goes on throughout
the rest of the year, as they are both in
the Western Conference, teams are both not doing that well,
so we'll see, we'll see where that is come you know,
January February.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
Well, just to close out this segment. I guess is
you said that because everyone knows you as a nice guy,
but you were one of the best trash talkers.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
You're saying to me, Yeah, I feel like, okay, you
don't know that, So I play the game. I play
the game. I'm nice at times.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
Man, Well, what's the best trash talking moment you've ever had?
Speaker 2 (12:59):
There's so many I can't even tell you. You got
to ask with that. That comes with the guests that
we're about to bring on.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
For a couple of seasons.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Okay, so that they got to tell you, Like you
remember Evan was talking to you.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
I got some PG thirteen stories.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
I got some rated R stories that you know might
not can hit the hit the air at times, because
when I start, it's hard to stop.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
When I start.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
There's got told you. I come from the Gary Payton era.
Like there, nothing is off limits. Bro, We're going except
like we're not talking about your family or we're going
to keep it hoop like I said, but it can
get there at times.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Well to get out that is a perfect segue because
I feel like Evan, our guest, is joining us here.
He gets into all you pull back the curtain, get
in the locker room. Here's some of those stories. So
let's take a break here on Point Game, and we're
back with our interview with Isaiah Thomas's teammate, Evan Turner.
(14:00):
We got a special guest here because we are in Boston,
honoring it, he said on the last episode, one of
his favorite teammates. You know him as twenty ten National
Player of the Year at Ohio State, second overall pick with
the Sixers. Host of Point Forward podcast, Everyone, please welcome
Evan Turner.
Speaker 5 (14:17):
What up? Thanks for having me man. I appreciate y'all.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
You're our first special guest.
Speaker 5 (14:24):
Ad Yeah, very special guests. Okay, yeah, Now, I appreciate that.
My man, Isaiah shows me a lot of love. We've
been locked in since you're like sixteen, so you know
clearly whenever he calls me or even when you just
think something, because I got so much respect for him,
you know, I don't take it for granted, like me
and a lot of people like real one, real one,
(14:45):
but like your thorough dude. So I really I'm really
honored to be here.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
Appreciated. Well, that's what I want. I was.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
I wanted to ask the question last episode, but I
wanted to know, like about that first time you guys
sort of met, you know, who you were as players
and people back then because you said sixteen ABCD can play.
Speaker 5 (15:03):
I actually we'll go further. So oh wow, so it's
super We played in Iowa. We were fifteen. Yeah, the
Super Showcase, the Super Showcase for fifteen crazy, So this
is this is the levels of difference. So he met
me at like at Reebok. I met him when we
were fifteen at the Super Showcase. So I played for
(15:25):
the Illinois Knights. For whatever reason, the Showcase wasn't as
big as it was supposed to be. I think they
were trying to cancel. It was only like ten teams there.
And it's a group called the United Nick Salad, So it's.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
Like United Salary. What it's like the food, like the
company company always walked.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
About the United Star Company.
Speaker 5 (15:44):
And it's legit and it was Nike. You might know
that they Wereaire, it's just our name was So. So
we walked into the gym and they're like, yeah, there's
a kid named Kyle Single and a kid named Isaiah Thomas.
We're like, man, who the hell do they think they are?
And then literally brought beat us bout like thirty five
points like it was. It was a blowout. So the
rest of the tournament when they played, we would just
(16:05):
watch them and I was like, Yo, there's a kid
named Isaiah that got like the best half spin I've
ever seen. And I'm like, yo, there's a white boy
named Kyle Singler, Like I don't know if y'all think
he's better than Derreck Cross like that thought.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
He was not no, no, no nice.
Speaker 5 (16:22):
Yeah, there's a ways he hooped like I'm like like
Larry Bird, but faster with a hand. I said, bro,
he didn't miss he was six six yeah, post game
And this all back in the day, so we played
them then. So I remember going back to uh high
school and just like always googling and trying to look
like them. What Isaiah Thomas doing? What's this white dude
Kyle Singler? And back then it was like og time,
(16:45):
So Oregon might as well have been like Pluto, you
know what I'm saying. And then Uh, I knew I
had to get my weight up clearly because they kicked
their ass, and then obviously I had to get better,
and I was good enough to eventually make it to
the ABCD camp, and by the time we saw each
other again, I'm kind of I don't think he remembered.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
Me too much, definitely not from the Iowa said the.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
First time was the ABC, Yeah, Iowa.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
I didn't even that was my first and only time ever.
Speaker 5 (17:12):
In the Iowa. Literally remember, I don't think you remember that.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
Yep.
Speaker 5 (17:15):
So that's that was it. So by the time we
had when I saw the A.
Speaker 3 (17:19):
B C.
Speaker 5 (17:19):
D Camp, whether you like me or now, I'm like,
you got a front so so so then we showed up.
We ended up doing our first photo shoot for U
for Slam Magazine and and who was back there.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
Brandon Jenny, Johnny Flynn.
Speaker 5 (17:37):
The Meetri McCamey uh, but you was a David.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
David, I had Little Bow pass all of that.
Speaker 5 (17:46):
And I had I had a rebok on.
Speaker 3 (17:49):
So you had a good who had.
Speaker 5 (17:52):
Had Pete Miller, yeah, the Little Romeo and had Pat Miller.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
On seventy p Miller Remember Jordan's he was the top Yeah, yeah, yeah,
he broke.
Speaker 5 (18:04):
He was bro don't keep bro even back then, like
we were all talking that he only spoke the certains
for show, like literally like you was man, I mean
when he sat there We're just like, oh, this is
a superstar, Like this.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
Is brand Jordan. He had every day, he had.
Speaker 5 (18:20):
Everything, and I knew he was good because I thought
Isaiah was unreal Isaiah like they're saying that's a.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
That.
Speaker 5 (18:31):
And then from there, you know, obviously we had CATAPULTI
I think he I went in somebody my senior year
year we classified and we.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
Were just watching.
Speaker 5 (18:40):
Each other kill. So when he came out of college
and was like, uh, you know, I remember when he
hit the big shot at the Stable Center and I'm
just like, bro, that dude been cold since we were
like kids, so never shot me. And then uh, you know,
obviously after the first year with the Kings, you just
see uh I remember j Jaylor nagelas like, man, that dude,
that dude just shows up early and like stays late,
(19:03):
but he's here super early. And he's like, I remember
we were like warming up to say something about people
that do that. He's like, that's not normal, and he's
saying he was always good. That's what jay Laarr Niggas said.
He's like he's gonna be like legit. And then from
there he uh, I was trying to resurface my career
in Boston, and uh, I think Danny didn't care about that,
(19:25):
and he brought in Isaiah and I went straight to
the bench.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
There was a few point guards on that team, but he.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
Was the point when I got here. He was he
was the point when I got Rondo. Rondo just left
right before.
Speaker 5 (19:38):
And it was between me and Smart, so you see
why the upgraded and uh but no, that was it.
And from there we were able to do some Uh
it was one of my favorite teams. Obviously one of
my favorite teammates, but we were able to do some
amazing stuff. And I think in part of my career,
like what Isaiah was able to take it. He carried
us along with him, and I was able to being
(20:00):
some big games, big moments and partaking that due to uh,
you know, the greatness and and and uh on an
effort that he put in. Like during that time, we
didn't even have a national TV game. And then from there,
like it was just like a guaranteed theme. He lost
the Big the Big Three, They traded Rondo, like nobody
paid attention to us, and then second he came like no,
(20:20):
I'm saying, but the second he showed up, we had
they forced National TV Gameiversity Troit and then we just
started cooking from there. But it's energy, like mentality and
stuff like really revigorate all our careers.
Speaker 1 (20:32):
So we get to the Celtics, he was saying, I mean,
you can look it up, but the roster was interesting,
and you guys ended up making a run with that
squad and it wasn't like, you know, the most obvious
stars on that team. And he was talking about that brotherhood,
so I guess you know there was Jay Crowder, was
Marcus Smart?
Speaker 5 (20:47):
Who else was on that squad? Tyler Zeller? Damn? Who
else was on our team?
Speaker 3 (20:54):
Uh r?
Speaker 5 (20:55):
J Hunter shout out?
Speaker 3 (20:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (21:00):
Who else?
Speaker 3 (21:00):
We had?
Speaker 5 (21:00):
Amir Johnson? Uh Sally jonas yourrapko. And to say about
that team, I think we were all in like a
spot where we had a chip on our shoulder, like
in a positive sense, you know. And I think, uh,
not only did we have a chip on our shoulder,
I thought that was a real locker room where we
(21:22):
communicated heavily and we all all kind of comprehended like
what type of cock we were in that system? And uh,
I think Brad did a great job just keeping it
real when we showed up like we were trying to
figure out who was gonna do what He's like, Isaiah
is the best playmaker we have. Does anybody have a
problem with that? No? Okay, so now let's figure out
what we're gonna do from here. But I think I
(21:44):
think we all wanted each other and win very very badly,
and there was no there was no real hate. And
I remember we had a conversation actually saying what type
of leader Isaiah was going back and forth in the
locker room and an individual, and we are kind of
feeling like he wasn't he wasn't being the best teammate.
Speaker 3 (22:05):
And when we.
Speaker 5 (22:06):
Sat there, we're just like, hey, bro, just so you know,
like we need to do better to seem like some
hay and ass ship, Like as a teammate, you need
to step up, brou and like be accountable. And to
his credit, the man did step up, became a better teammate.
And but those little conversations were everything, you know, well.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
Because Brad was still coming to his own I feel
like in that moment, like you know, they hadn't found
like that coach, right, so like you guys were all
again rebuilding. So like what clicked finally in that following season.
Speaker 2 (22:34):
I think I honestly, I think what made our teams
good And it's just like he said, like we were,
we messed with each other. We really kicked it with
each other, like especially me and him, like we'll be
in the hotel late night, just chopping it out till
two three in the morning, no matter where it's at.
So but we had guys like that on the team
(22:55):
that did spend time with each other, whether it be
on the court or off the floor, going to dinner,
all those types of things, celebrating with each other. So
I think that was like a big thing for that
group because we wasn't talented like that. We wasn't If
you look at us on paper, like we probably looked
like we ain't winning anything the group we had, but
(23:15):
like we all, like he said, we all was counted out.
We all was trying to prove to I think everybody
in that point in their career was trying to prove
that they were more valuable, they were worth more, they
were better players. And then we just all came together
and really did our thing together for that little time.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
But it made it made a big impact on the
city for sure.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
So of me ask you this so like funniest teammate
and I guess funniest moment on that squad.
Speaker 5 (23:42):
Bro, we just had a goofy ass group of like
like I thought, he'll probably get pissed us at this.
But we used to gamble on the plane and I
would play at the table where they were really paying money,
like you're saying, I'm playing Ano fight the fight. So
(24:04):
they did this, man so bogus. So we know they
about to wave David Lee, but they all old David
Lee like collectively like a quarter. So David like I
could be gassing. It's a bit David like, Man, I'm
goinna get brought up. I'm going to man this. So
you get up and go to the bathroom. I ain't
gonna say who at the table these niggas was like, yeah,
(24:26):
so the deadline Tuesday, are we paying? Literally paining like
like are we paying? Are y'all paying? So like literally
they like, now we ain't gonna pay. So so then
by the time we see him next, like when we
play the MAVs, David is like in the shooting around
line like, hey.
Speaker 3 (24:46):
Bro, we're at bread.
Speaker 6 (24:51):
Got damn you wanted like broadcast and he's as smart
ass to it's that damn I can't get my little
sixty thousand, like damn big ballers.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
Like it's like a casual NBA fan. We don't like
people don't know about David Lee at all.
Speaker 5 (25:11):
It's the funniest, that's the funniest, coolest, like wavest I
was telling somebody the other day. I was like when
not even like the daily I won't talk about like
real money and people finding somebody. Man, David Lee was
just getting to it now. So he's living like, yeah,
different life and yeah, you live in Tom Brady's old
house for like k yeah, Like he was so booming
(25:33):
that like we might be like what you're wearing a
night and I'll be like man, Gucci and Jordan's and
like our fit might be like twenty three hundred. I'm
like what you're wearing, d league man jeans, a black
tea and a quarter nain dollar watch. He might pull
up to like for sure, I ain't gonna go in here, bro,
like I'll buy a bottle And it was a second,
like he'll do like five figures, like.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
Like the way he's a cool I still talk to
d I still talked to d to was one of
And I always thought d Lee and Brad's relationship hilarious, hilarious.
I don't think Brad thought I think Brad thought d
Lee was done. I think thought Brad was an idiot.
(26:15):
But I think they pass so much respect for each other.
They really liked each other.
Speaker 5 (26:18):
But they liked each other.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
They were like opposite of who each other was.
Speaker 2 (26:22):
What d did, Brad hated, hated what Brad how Brad
coach d.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
Like, come on, man, we're not doing that.
Speaker 2 (26:30):
Because Brad was coming from college, so a lot of
stuff Brad did, like especially early on, was kind of
like college type stuff, which is.
Speaker 5 (26:38):
And also too Brad was trying to win, so like
every even sometimes, I know this dude was killing us,
do you know what I mean? We were. We were
so bad at the time where it was kind of like, hey, bro,
you can't be worse than our worst right now, you
fucking the game.
Speaker 3 (26:54):
It was funny because he was coming from the Warriors. Ways, man,
we did this, we were and I get that, but
it was like trying to hear that ship.
Speaker 5 (27:02):
Yeah, man, like your three man is shooting twenty two percent.
You're not You're not at you are not at the Warriors.
No more, Yo, you're big man is shooting that is Yes.
I thought he was super cool man, but David le
was wavy and then Kelly Olinok. For whatever reason, I
don't think people knew how cool and Kelly Olenic used
to uh, I don't know if he sent it to
(27:24):
you when on snapchat. Him and his friends used to
do forty bar Friday. Yeah, so I used to every Friday.
They just I would just get like one hundred snaps
and I said, you know what, you know what today is?
And like like I'm finding video of us in the basement.
I went to his basketball camp in can Loose, Canada, right,
(27:46):
I remember I was supposed to go. So he said, man,
just come over to the house. Bro, we just kicking
a mob out. So I'm like all right, So I
go downstairs. I have a bunch of Canadians. It is
twenty sixteen twenties. I'm like, min about, how are we mobbing?
Type shit? So they're like, bro, just line up, bro,
we're about to get started. Like so we're around the table.
I'm like, get started with what? And it's like, bro,
(28:07):
it's Friday. So literally they play that E forty so
on and warm them ups, like you ever been in prison? Nope? Nope.
So like while I'm sitting here, I'm like, what is
going on? I just keep hearing Nope, and just see
all these white boys is bouncing. And then like so
now they really turned and I'm like, oh.
Speaker 3 (28:26):
This is serious.
Speaker 5 (28:28):
So two minutes goes by and then like they warmed
up and then we freestyle till like three am. Bro,
I'm gonna send y'all.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
Is one of the coolest teage his hat all the
way backwards. Yeah, take a shower in that hat.
Speaker 5 (28:45):
You said something. We all were discussing our like our
scouter report coming out of college and like what our
pre draft was like, can remember you were like, brou
imagine what scouts start when they saw Kelly a minute
back then it was twenty fifteen shooting through. He's crazy
and he's the first one that started to slow stop
for sure, and they kept to you, if you go
(29:08):
back this year the first one that before it was
called anything all that all that bullshit that uh gang
Pard Groom did. Yeah, I believe he was doing all
of that. He was unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
That's crazy.
Speaker 1 (29:23):
Okay, So you talked about you guys played for Brad
Obviously they've been through a couple of one coach and
then Missoula. Now who is such a strong personality. So
I guess, like, what do you guys thinking about him?
Would you guys have flourished under under Joe? Like how
have you seen it from the outside? I guess the
identity of the Boston Celtics changed since the time you
guys were there.
Speaker 5 (29:40):
I was a prima diner, so you had to talk
to me nice or else I wasn't or else you
were going to talk to my agent. Let that go
by the time I hit Boston. But uh not, bro,
you got to be able to play and make the court.
I think one thing that occurs that when you go
certain places, and we all know it's culture. Culture is
(30:01):
a very important thing and whether you think so, uh,
the best way that somebody can show your respect is
trying to compete hard versus you, or coach you very hard.
And I think as a professional athlete, especially like Isaiah
when he wanted to take you to the next level
every single year, like you gotta you gotta have somebody
that is with you in that in that circle, pushing you,
like how Joe does how the standard email Doka has
(30:23):
from his players. Even with Brad, It's like, now, this
is what we do here, this is what I expect
from you, and that's the standard, and that's just a
Boston culture.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
I want to ask you, guys, because you guys both
come from strong basketball scenes Chicago obviously, Seattle Tacoma. Which
which scene would you think is better?
Speaker 5 (30:39):
I'm be you? Can you honest with you?
Speaker 6 (30:41):
Ji?
Speaker 5 (30:43):
I was telling somebody recently, I want to see like
a scoring doc Like I just want to see, like
I want somebody to put together a documentary of all
the scores that like Malachai Flint, like I'm talking about
like you're talking about like y'all got nothing but Aaron Brooks.
Speaker 3 (30:57):
Yeah, I forgot about Snakey.
Speaker 5 (31:01):
But our hoop scene is like I've been popping since
I was twelve, like our you know what I'm saying
what I'm saying, Like Chicago high school scene.
Speaker 2 (31:09):
I remember watching what was the show called when I
was your preps?
Speaker 5 (31:16):
Goodness will will the high school like the high school
game I don't know about, but the high school games
are bigger than the pro pro games. And my person
on my line, yeah, right, So especially when d Roses
around like that.
Speaker 1 (31:30):
Ship was a You played against the Rose in high school?
Speaker 5 (31:32):
Yeah, yea, yeah, were the same class.
Speaker 1 (31:34):
And you got what was in the playoffs? You guys
you lost him in.
Speaker 5 (31:37):
The Yeah, the go downstate? Yeah I did it. I
did it to him.
Speaker 3 (31:42):
You know these stories did.
Speaker 5 (31:46):
D Roses unbelievable, Like don't let me like, yeah, like
hype that up, but we had by time I hit
what happened By the time I hit my senior year,
like I was obviously topping the country and there was
a conversation where I was a second best player in
the state. But it was looking like it was worth
discussing verse Derek, even though it wasn't. So they set
up two games. Obviously. The first game was a pretty
(32:09):
a pretty big game, and uh we both had thirty
a piece. And then like the second game, which was
such a big game to go down state. I think
I like he got in fould for I had like thirty,
but they had such a good team. We lost, But
I did my thing. Bro, I don't ever wanted this
to go. Like Derek was big for Chicago, but like
that's it.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
They gave him twenty four. Yeah, we'll put the tape together.
Speaker 1 (32:35):
That's my job is you guys remember those games and
we'll find it and we'll put we'll.
Speaker 3 (32:39):
Cut it together.
Speaker 5 (32:40):
I want to see it.
Speaker 3 (32:41):
I won't.
Speaker 5 (32:41):
It probably won't look as good as uh that's I think,
but it would be be legit. What do you think
about like the Seattle like because because because it's a.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
Difference, I'm not sure. I mean, we got we got Hoopers.
Speaker 5 (32:57):
But you know I didn't score score bro. I think
like eventually, if you look at some of our guys,
like our ship comes like with a physicality, like defensive minded,
like blue collar, like like posting it is Pat bad,
like Pat bad, average thirty, like our hoopers look like that,
and one of the best guards ever ready played like
you play like a six three postsman, sure what I'm saying,
(33:19):
And like our just all physicality like.
Speaker 3 (33:22):
A little just smooth West Coast. That's what.
Speaker 5 (33:27):
We get in the seventies for we rest like we
playing scoring that Yeah, and like everybody from that area
is similar in that way in terms of they ain't
really no point guard, they ain't really know like they're
they're they're getting a basket.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
But the one thing I will say about where I'm
from is we we can play outside inside.
Speaker 3 (33:50):
All of that.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
And I'm not I'm not saying y'all can't in Chicago.
It's all respect to Chicago. But that's one thing I
think that stands out for us, Like we can play
at the park. We can go really hoop in the
gym and be really good at it, like a lot
of the guys that made it out of where I'm
from can do both.
Speaker 3 (34:08):
And that's hard to do both.
Speaker 5 (34:09):
That is so that remember we always have those conversations
in the locker room. We be talking like hooping and
like sometimes Jay might say this, every might say this,
and we always all right, I'm cool on ones like
roll the ball out. I know I'm goody, I'm good
on one. So tell me Hooper here about. I think
(34:33):
Jared'll be like, that's when dudes to get quiet. Don't
don't don't talk no ship, you can't do this. Yeah,
And that's when I think we were always super tighte.
I'm like, hey, bro, you nice brother.
Speaker 3 (34:45):
You know I can get to it.
Speaker 5 (34:47):
You know I can get to it. And when he
be in the locker like can y'all y'all want to
talk about Hoopers like some of y'all play basketball. Bro,
we hooped like like pop, there's a different You leave
me in the gym, have a heart attack on you,
brother thought, you know what I mean? And I think
that's I think that's the difference sometimes where like when
you sit there like those West Coasters, especially his scores,
(35:10):
man like Isaiah scored fifty, like until he's fifty five,
Like you look at Ala Kinna Flynn. You look at
it like I said, Aaron Brooks is the perfect example.
He was doing that back in the day's five nine
like no nothing and then be Roy Black Bright Live Roy.
That's my favorite. Roy. Roy is my favorite.
Speaker 1 (35:32):
He's a huge what if I mean like people talk
about d rosewood if, but like Brandon was in his
prime until that new.
Speaker 5 (35:37):
Stuff, because what was he Rookie of the Year, NBA
All Star time and then he was first team All
second team on NBA coach did.
Speaker 3 (35:48):
They said? The typest guy and he had no weakness.
That's what they shaid.
Speaker 5 (35:53):
You guys.
Speaker 1 (35:54):
I love you guys bringing up names of like when
you're in high school, who are some of these other
guys who are like, oh they might do something that
you know the generations now know, like any other guys
besides you know the d Rose is the Malachaisa, any
other players that we missed out.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
On mail.
Speaker 5 (36:10):
J was tough. So there's a kid, uh with these
big ass eyes, like a long head and like crooked
teas that just kept always looking at me. And I'm like,
the fun keep looking at so then like he just
kept like just looking through my soul like all the time,
Like bro, what is to this? Like you know? So
when we finally start playing, he just keep looking at me,
and then we start hooping. He's like I got him,
(36:31):
and I'm like, bro, this man is on my top.
They were, Bro, this gave me the longest day of
my life. You want to know who it was? James Harden.
I kid you not nor hair no long end And
I tell you one battle I never want, but he
been busting my I remember one time, right BJ Mullen's
(36:57):
played for OKC Thunder this one James is coming off
the bench. BJ Mum's coming to my house the night
before and I always going on and say, oh, such
a such a sitting. I think, uh, I think James
might start tomorrow. But he's like, hey, bro kill him.
Speaker 3 (37:09):
Bro.
Speaker 5 (37:09):
He was talking crazy about this something.
Speaker 3 (37:11):
I got him.
Speaker 5 (37:12):
I got him in my head. I'm like, yeah, so
like the next day, I might fuck it, Bro, I'm
just gonna come out and I'm gonna really try to
kill this bro. If y'all go back and look at that.
But it's man, I think he like he could have
ran off like sixteen. This is okay, see James, So
this is before like it was really popishure like so
(37:34):
like he was I don't know how I was able.
Like I left the game where Kevin Durant is there,
and this man gave me the most work. I'm talking about,
like chilled me the whole night. Bro. He must have
gave me like sixteen in the first half. But that
was I think, Yeah, that was the wildest. Uh.
Speaker 3 (37:48):
He's been lying you up.
Speaker 5 (37:51):
I don't know what my mama told him, but that
he's still doing it the other night man cold bro.
Speaker 1 (38:00):
All right, And so the reason why we're here in
Boston is you are giving the award, the Basketball Legacy
Award to it here from the city of Boston. So
I guess, like what does that mean for you? Like,
how is that is that special that you were chosen
to do this?
Speaker 5 (38:13):
No, I told him when he told me. I was like, damn,
like uh, like you know what I mean, almost brought
it to her my eye. I got so much respect
for for Isaiah, like him as a man, like I
literally like watch it like he worked, even like what
he's going through now you know his whole story. He
is like the pity like the epitome of a man,
and like it's like biblical in that sense, you know.
(38:36):
And uh, you know I've I've always uh just just
just looked up to him and like been a fan
of his. So anytime, like the just as a person,
everything anytime like it's reciprocated. You don't take you for granted.
Could have asked one hundred different people, and you know,
to be in that circle, even to share that moment
(38:56):
with somebody, that's a rarity, like a one percent, Like
I don't that that is, that's an act that's better
than even getting inducted, you know, and it shows like
a reward of like being a decent human too. Like
you know, I think one thing that I've taken great
pride in is like the same thing that makes you
(39:17):
laugh makes you cry. And I remember I put up
thirty thirty one night, and I remember and the locker
room guys were cool with it, and I remember Isaiah
reached out to him. It's like, hey, you was killing
the night cause and you might not think it is
at all, but that's like, damn, that's some realist shit,
especially in the heat of like competition, like I need
to be that challenged me, like to be a better teammate,
(39:38):
better friend. I'm like, this is real, Like this is
actually real, like you know, and from there, you know,
it's just dope, Bro. I don't take it for granted,
like the longevity of our friendship and even just being
able to talk about like our kids and shit and
see somebody like he's getting his just due to get
like glorified. It's one of the best basketball players I
(39:59):
ever been aroun one of the hardest workers I ever
been around in like pound for pound, Like and you know,
sun he deserves all the sunshine, bro. And and for
me just to be part of it and just to
wear a suit, bro, Like I'm grateful, and you know,
I wear this with a badge of honor.
Speaker 3 (40:16):
But it's.
Speaker 5 (40:19):
And I want to say this one last thing about Isaiah, uh,
because it's the dopest thing I took from him. I
remember watching him as a pop like as a dad,
and I used to be like, what you do today?
So I had to wake up take my little man
to school. I said, if you do that, like yeah,
just like man, you know sometimes I wake up. I
(40:40):
was up early. Man, my little man want the hoop.
And I'm like, bro, you just had thirty, like thirty
last night, and you do that now. I remember he
wasn't there one day and he was flying back the
same day from Boston and Seattle to take James to
his first basketball practice.
Speaker 3 (40:55):
And uh, I.
Speaker 5 (40:57):
Remember even when I go through like hell by my
friends are here and I kind of go through like
some of that stuff hell of high water, be a dad,
and uh, every time I stopped, like I'll text him,
I think, and I'm like, no, I said done this.
I've seen him do it and ain't never bitch. And
that's one thing I always took away from him, just
like like the new standard of like what it takes
(41:18):
to be a dad, but a black dad. But just
even like nobody even knows that he did, like there's
ninety percent of that ship and he did all that
while averaging thirty and like no credit, no, like no
nothing like and being there for his wife and everything, like,
but being there for his kids, like his kids know
him and like and like like the intentionality they show
us up with daily, Like that's what I've I've taken
(41:40):
so much and I've tried to be like that for
my daughter. And that's that's He's amazing man. And I
don't think he gets a credit.
Speaker 3 (41:46):
My fault for like nah, but.
Speaker 2 (41:50):
You know we always talk even if we ain't on
the phone, we text. He always sent a text every
now and then just about our friendship and that ship.
For you to be the first guest like that, that
that means you know how I feel about you.
Speaker 3 (42:06):
General for shut up?
Speaker 1 (42:10):

All right, welcome back to Point Game. That was our
interview with Evan Turner. I mean we got to keep
having et on because those stories were wild. We had
to leave someone on the cutting room floor because we'll
save it for another time.
Speaker 3 (43:41):
But also say we're rated R like you said, Oh yeah,
he's he's one of a kind.
Speaker 2 (43:46):
So if we ever need some good conversation, he's always
invited back.
Speaker 1 (43:50):
We're going to close out this episode. It you and
I've ben talking and there's some things you wanted to
do here on this platform a Point Game. You're really
excited about this segment, so why don't you take us
through what we're about to do in your brand new segment.
Speaker 2 (44:02):
All right, So I got a new segment called No
Days Off. That's a little mantra of my Slow Grind brand,
you know, and it's really given shine and light to
guys in the league that you know, aren't the superstars
that don't get all the headlines and the social media,
don't get all the interviews and the public they deserve
(44:22):
to give. And as we go through this week, by week.
Some weeks we have a couple of players, some weeks
we have one. And this week I want to give
light and shine to somebody that has that slow grind
mentality over a rookie over there with the New Orleans Pelicans,
Derek Queen, somebody who you know had to mentally have
(44:45):
a slow grind mentality because he got hurt in the
Summer League, I believe, and had a little surgery where
he had to just you know, slow down a little
bit and get his mind right. And when he got
back healthy, as everybody's seen this year, he's a he's
a he's a light on the New Orleans Pelicans.
Speaker 3 (45:03):
He's been having a hell of a rookie year.
Speaker 2 (45:05):
I think he's played against Joker last last few games
where even Joker said some some really high level things
about him.
Speaker 8 (45:13):
He's good. You know, he's good. He has some moves,
he's definitely crafty. He's so he's unorthodox, great touch for
the touch around the field, for the game. It's good
to see somebody some of the different.
Speaker 2 (45:26):
So I got to give a shout out to Derek,
a rookie the New Orleans Pelicans that's had a really
great start to the year. Also another shout out to
DeAndre Jordan, who was a vet over there showing him
the ropes, you know, leading the way for him, you know,
giving him all the inside on the right things to do,
stand away from the wrong things.
Speaker 3 (45:47):
Shout out the DJ over there in New Orleans.
Speaker 2 (45:49):
But the No Days Off segment, I got to give
a big shout out to Derek Man.
Speaker 3 (45:54):
The world's not showing you all the love you deserve,
but we got to give.
Speaker 2 (45:57):
You a shout out over here sooner now to show
to show that you've been doing your thing.
Speaker 3 (46:02):
Bro.
Speaker 1 (46:03):
And I want people who are listening to this podcast,
you write these names down so when everyone's talking about them,
when they're on All Star teams and they're you know,
having crazy plaid performances. You heard it say it first,
but you said you actually you had an experience watching Derek.
Speaker 2 (46:19):
Yeah, so last year NCAA Tournament. Last year, second round
of the NCAA Tournament. I took my boys to go
see his game last year, which was in Seattle, and
he had a hell of a game. He ended up
hitting the game winner at the buzzard they run, They
ran a play for a freshman and he he sealed
the deal with a buzzer.
Speaker 4 (46:39):
Beater from the pounds to the freshman queen who's tried
it with life to the sweet sixteen.
Speaker 2 (46:51):
So that game I seen the promise that he had
and the future that he had, and after that I
knew he was going to the league. So you know,
shout out to him, hell of a player. Future is
super bright. Stay on your slow grind, my brother, and
keep battling and keep pushing.
Speaker 3 (47:08):
You know what.
Speaker 1 (47:08):
I saw it the other night because dude's a dog
and there's this one. You know, everyone every Hooper knows
this tradition where if the game's essentially over, there's a
big lead or whatever, they're actually down by I think
like twenty or eighteen.
Speaker 3 (47:20):
And he stole the ball.
Speaker 1 (47:22):
Figure what team, and everyone was just like dribbling out
the clock. He stole the ball and dunked it. And honestly,
I feel like we got to revisit that tradition because
it was like, you don't do that, but it's just
like you play to the buzzer. You know, there's a
little bit of like bro So I thought I liked that.
Speaker 3 (47:38):
Yeah, I love that. Look. I was that guy. I
was the guy that were yelling at when I was
a rookie and I was.
Speaker 2 (47:43):
Getting in in the last two minutes of the game,
down twenty or up twenty, I'm playing to the buzzer.
If you gonna let the ball just be out in front,
I'm going to get it so I don't fault him.
Get your baskets, get your extra rebounds, get your extra assists,
play to the buzzer.
Speaker 3 (48:00):
Sounds you doing your thing? Bro Yep, we.
Speaker 1 (48:03):
Got to rewrite that rule. We got to revisit that one.
Speaker 3 (48:05):
We got too.
Speaker 1 (48:06):
We got to I'll do a quick shout out for
no days off for this segment. I like Dannis Jenkins.
I mean I was texting Zeri, our producer, about two
weeks ago. I think they were playing the Wizards, which
they should have handled that game a little bit better
because of the number one in the East. But it
went to overtime and Danis Jenkins was having a game.
I think he's had like twenty four but he had
a huge clutch shot in overtime, and I was like, oh,
(48:28):
maybe this is a fluke. You know, this guy was
a two way player G League, but since then, last
two weeks he's been going off. He's one of those
guys where I mean Detroit. This is how they're going
to keep getting better and being at the top of
the East. They just find these guys and these guys
who just know what to do with the opportunity. You know,
(48:49):
there was the first time hearing about him two weeks ago,
and I just keep hearing about him. I think they're
going to as as the Pistons continue to just shine.
And they just got Jade and Ivy back and so
the that can they figure out how to like work
the caid, Jayden, Dannis, you know, just they got players.
They're deep over there. So shout out to Dannis and
(49:10):
I'm I'm excited to keep watching this Pistons team, Like
who knows, guy's a limit for them.
Speaker 3 (49:14):
Big shout out to him.
Speaker 2 (49:15):
I've been seeing them too in the stat sheet and
the box score doing his thing. Shout out to the
Detroit Pistons. You you you mentioned the decisions that they're
making in the front office to get these guys. A
big shout out to Treasure Langdon too. Like they're they're
doing their thing over there, man, and and it's good
to see a team that's you know, not counted on
(49:37):
to be a championship contender, to the to the to
the main media, to the to the world. And if
you really watch a Detroit Piston game, they got all
the tools to make some real noise in the playoffs
this year, as they've been showing everybody at the start
of this year. So shout out to them, Shout out
to Ky Cunningham. They're doing their thing.
Speaker 1 (49:57):
Yeah, JB, that's a that's a nice organization over there.
Speaker 3 (50:00):
Detroit Basketball is back. Joy basketball.
Speaker 1 (50:03):
All right, Well, everyone, please keep it locked. You're gonna
get some more knowledge dropped on to you some other players.
If you got League Pass, you're just like scroll away
from your favorite team watch some other hoopers.
Speaker 3 (50:13):
You know.
Speaker 1 (50:13):
That's what we're trying to do here. We're trying to
give you guys some great basketball homework to check out
who else is doing their thing in the league. But
this has been point game. It you got anything else
to leave us with?
Speaker 2 (50:24):
The piggyback on what you're saying, man, we want to
give love to everybody, not just the easy guys, not
just the superstars, the guys that are on all the commercials.
So you know, we just want to show love and
respect and give everybody their flowers that they deserve.
Speaker 3 (50:40):
And you know we're going to keep talking the game.
Speaker 1 (50:41):
Bro, Yeah, jevity shout outs. I know there's some birthdays
especial people on.
Speaker 2 (50:45):
My Yeah, shout out to my wife Kayla. Her birthdays
in a couple of days. She's a little older than me,
So you're getting old. But you're still beautiful. Man, You're
still beautiful. I love you. Shout out to my daughter too.
She'd be watching these and she'd be wondering why I
don't give a shout out. So shout out to my daughter,
Journey girl. You know I got a shout out to
the women in my life.
Speaker 5 (51:04):
Love it.
Speaker 3 (51:04):
