Speaker 1 (00:00):
Day live from the Don's Appliances Studios where Pittsburgh shops
for appliances. This is w dv E Pittsburgh.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Yeah, it's the DVE Morning Show. And so honored to
be joined right now by our dear friend two complete
game winner in the nineteen seventy one World Series, the
World Series champion, Steve Blast Ladies and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
All right, all right, all right, good mor night, Steve.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
How are you.
Speaker 4 (00:37):
I'm doing great. I'm doing great. You know, this world
serious time of the year, and I was. I was
glued to it. A lot of excitement, a lot a
lot of excitement. You know, usually it's the best four
out of seven, but this year is the best four
out of eight because of that extra any games, right,
crazy crazy night.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Yeah, I don't know that I remember a World Series
that had this many highlight plays. Right down to Game seven,
the last three innings, it seemed that every at bat
had a highlight play.
Speaker 4 (01:12):
Yeah, it was, it was. That was a great finish,
and you know, the Yamamoto was great. But don't forget
the role that Rojas played for the Dodgers, because I
still wonder if that Toronto runner was safe at home play.
But Rojas, Rojas had a shot at him, so he
had to give ground. So he's got his you know,
he's backing up away from the infield and throwing a
(01:34):
strike with some mustard on it to home plate on
top of hitting a home run that was critical for
the Dodgers. So yeah, Yamamoto was great, but don't forget
about Rojas. And yeah, every you know, you got to
get twenty seven outs somehow in the ball get boy,
they were precious. They were big outs. Some of them
were made, a couple weren't, but every yeah, it was
(01:57):
on the line. It was compelling television, Steve.
Speaker 5 (02:00):
Other than yourself, what's the greatest World Series pitching performance?
Speaker 4 (02:06):
Well, I got to go back to Bob Gibson. I
think in sixty eight, I think he won three games.
He had seventeen seventeen strikeouts in one game. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
well you know the great story. I can't remember the
umpire's name, I should, but the seventeen strikeouts. They interviewed
bub writers all interviewed Gibson and got their stories and
(02:29):
then he went into the umpire and I'm not sure
it was and they said, what did you think he
gives them. He said he was great. He struck out ten,
I struck out seven. Well.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Yamamoto stats in this World Series three and oh A
one point two one point zero two era A, fifteen strikeouts,
seventeen and two thirds innings pitched, and Steve Blast in
nineteen seventy one two and oh eighteen innings pitched, two wins,
including a game seven e ra A one point five
seven hits allowed total in those two complete games.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
I need, you know something.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
I think about that sometimes, and of course during the
World Series, did that guy do that? You know, it's
in the highlights of them.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
It seems like a different like you.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
Yeah, it does at times, and then I go back
and say, you know, it's just so locked in, uh,
really great, great performances. You're you're in a bubble and
there's nothing occurring to other than what many SAIG game
wants me to throw. But it was, you know, so great,
just just seven hits. Uh, if you're going to have
(03:40):
a couple of good ball games in your ten year career,
ha them in October. But you know the great thing.
The great thing was I got my face ripped off
in the playoffs, and I thought I had never been
I'd never pitched in postseason before, so I fell into
that trap in the playoffs against the Giants that, Okay,
it's not the regular season. I got to be faster,
(04:01):
I got to strike out more, and that didn't work.
I wasn't that kind of a pitcher. But you know,
when I got to pitch in the third game, because
I had I had to wait for the third game
because of the playoffs. But when I got there, we
were down to nothing to one of the great, great,
really great teams when you consider the seventy one Orioles.
They won one hundred games again during the season, they
(04:23):
were defending world champions, four twenty game winners, hall of famers,
including the evil Earl Weaver. But that was that was
a great game. We had to win that third game
or you can't go down three nothing to that kind
of a ball team. So I had. You know, you
can't look back and say, oh, I was going to
(04:44):
be great, because you know, I was obsessed with finding
out And I think I go all the way back
to that word obsession, not knowing, not knowing if you're
good enough, but obsessed with finding out from you know,
am I am I good enough to be a little leader.
Am I good enough to pitch of my high school team?
Am I? I'm obsessed with finding out. I'm obsessed with
(05:05):
finding out if I'm good enough to be in the Pros.
The night before the seventh game, I was obsessed with
finding out. I didn't know. I knew it was capable,
but I was obsessed with finding out. I had to know.
And you know, if you say you know, you don't know,
you don't know to either do it or you don't
do it. But it's every World Series. I think about that,
(05:27):
and then the gift, you know, the time he had
to be right. You got to be good, but you
got to be fortunate in other ways. The whole scenario
of that, watching Clemeny show everybody around baseball what we
had seen for twenty years, him coming up to me
the airplane after on the way home to Pittsburgh and
(05:50):
coming down to my rod where Karen and I were sitting,
and Clemeny come out of his seat down the aisle
of the airplane and said, blast come here, let me
embrace you. I mean that's I got goosebumps. Now, you
know there are moments in your life you never forget.
I just hung on. Oh Many made that gesture and
he was the MVP and he won a car for that.
(06:10):
So the next spring I said, you know, I, okay,
you deserve it. I applaud you got the car. I
should have gotten the tires at least. Then he said
something to me in Spanish that I cannot.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
Reconsize here, Steve, what do you make.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
Oh yeah, that kind of relationship.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
Yeah, sorry to interrupt you there.
Speaker 6 (06:30):
I just was going to ask you what you make
of what we saw from show Heyo Tawanny this postseason.
I mean, twelve punch outs and three home runs in
a series deciding game, and then to be on base
nine times in that eighteen inning game and then be
on the bump the next game.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
How do you even how do you even do that?
Speaker 4 (06:53):
Well, that didn't happen. We all managed it. Yeah, it's
never happened before. It will never happened again. That was
a performance for the Ages. He did something that astounding.
You know, it's not historical, it's hysterical. It's you know,
what he did is phenomenal. And you know, you talk
(07:14):
about his performance and then you talk about your moto.
You know, it's a seventh game. All hands are on deck.
They would never use him and risk his arm and
health and everything unless there's a seventh game of the
World Series, so you know, all all bets, all rules
are off in the seventh game and everybody, everybody aired
(07:38):
it out and both teams they didn't leave anything on
the field. I was kind of a foot by his
bipolar because I'm a nationally got guy. I love the Dodgers,
the cradle of pitching, but I thought it would be
great for baseball if Toronto wins it. That you just
(07:59):
can't buy. But that's a bad phrase. The Dodgers didn't
buy it. They bought talent. Yeah, but that talent did it,
and that's great to see great baseball. Nobody quit, nobody
quit in that World Series. I applaud that as much
as anything. Uh yeah, so it was. It was one
of one of the one of the more entertaining World
(08:19):
Series you're ever going to be around. Watching Otani and
in the Japanese pitcher who was who is phenomenal. Yeah,
they had shots of him working on his mechanics. Uh
in the dugout, Well, the Dodgers are hitting, I mean, uh, have.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
You ever seen a guy do that before? Where he's
actually just going through the He's going through his mechanics
in the dogs like visualized.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
I've never seen it. Yeah, I've never I've never seen that.
I've never seen that. I know all great pictures, good
pictures have routines, but not in between. You know you're
in there resting. Uh. Yeah, he was resting. When I
was pitching in the seventh game, I couldn't sit still.
I was pacing. So you talk about getting your steps in,
(09:04):
I couldn't sit still the bottom of when we hitting
the top of the ninth I went to in the
in the clubhouse, which was right there in Baltimore and
back of the dugout, and there's Bob Prince, the gunner,
waiting there. I said, what the hell are you doing
in here? He said me, what the hell are you
doing in here? Go get me three houts so I
can do some interviews. Okay, And I did nine pitches
(09:28):
by the Yeah, nine pitches and I'm facing the heart
of the order. It's hard to hard to throw strikes
on you're fishing your pasts. Glad we had the Gray
Road Unis on. But you know, you think about it,
(09:52):
I've got boot Paul Frank Robinson Murv Redmond boot Pol
you know, can hit the ball six miles. And then
you got Robinson, Hall of fame, five hundred home runs,
and then Merv Retman who hit something like three twenty
so boot Pal all he got many Sankie and you
called my slow curve at foot Wilson. We showed him
everything else, but gave him the flip Wilson. He hit
(10:15):
the ball five hundred feet, but it was four hundred
feet foul. He's so far out in front of him,
so he bounced out of the short Now two to one.
I got Frank Robinson, who in Game three I won
that five to one. He had a monster home run
that was the only run off a hanging slider. And
as God is my judges is the truth. First pitch
I threw to him, I let govid it felt like
(10:37):
the same slider that I threw in Game three. And
I looked up and I said, Lord, if you get
me out of this, I'll be a good Catholic boy
the rest of my life. And he popped it straight up,
and I said, just kidn't, just didn't, And he popped
it up. And every time I saw Frank after that,
he said, I want that slider back. I said, you
(10:58):
want it back when I let go of it, I
wanted it back toward both parties wanted that pitch back,
but uh, he popped it up and then, uh, you
know the ball that Retinan hit pounced off the mount
and I said, base hit up the middle, and I
was so locked in. I had no idea where Jackie
her Nanda's was playing, but we had him shaded up
toward the middle because Rutmand was a good contact hitter.
(11:20):
Like the ball hit straight away and wound up being
a routine play from Jackie the guy that Earl Weaver. Uh,
the evil or relievers said you couldn't win the World
Series of Jackie her Nanda's at shortstop. Gee, now he
was hurt and he winds up making the last play
work for the for the twenty seventh out, and uh,
(11:42):
it's the release is incredible.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
The famous blast jump ensued the league.
Speaker 4 (11:50):
Yeah, I can still do that now if I had
a ladder. I just.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Steve. Steve, thank you so much, buddy for for for
spending time with us this morning, and we love you
and those memories that we always appreciate you sharing your
experiences with us and Uh, you know, I talked with
you last week and you're a couple weeks ago and
said happy anniversary. Pittsburgh will never forget that one. Baseball
will never forget your performance in the nineteen seventy one
(12:16):

Speaker 4 (12:18):
Thanks, thanks, man. I always enjoyed the visit with you, guys.

Speaker 4 (12:37):

Speaker 2 (12:40):
Okay, well, we'll see you. That's the one and only
World Series champion Steve blast this morning on the DV
Morning Show. And there's nobody quite like Steve Blass. It's
hard to pitch.
Speaker 5 (12:53):

Speaker 2 (12:55):

With the trade deadline coming up here, there's going to
be some NFL news. You had the Penguins playing last
night and blowing it in the third period. We don't
have baseball anymore, but there's no shortage of news stories
going on in your world.
Speaker 5 (14:45):
No, we've got college basketball cracked up. Last night sports
that are brought to you by Bridgual Plights. Penguins were
dominating the Maple Leafs last night in Toronto until they
wreant three nothing Pittsburgh after two periods. Depends It out
shot the Leaves seventy to three in the second period,
but uh, something happened and Toronto scored four goals in
(15:06):
ten minutes and twelve seconds during the third period, steals
a win from the Penns four to three. Ben kindall
his fourth and fifth of the year for the Penguins,
a bright spot for the visitors. Kindle becomes the fifth
eighteen year old in Penguin's history with a multi goal game,
and he guesses as to the others eighteen year olds
(15:28):
with a multi goal game in George, that's one, Sydney
Crosby's two. Mary Lemieux, No, he started as a nineteen
year old. All right, mcjesus, Well not Penn. You're missing
an obvious one. Gino, No, no obvious eighteen year old. Yeah,
(15:55):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
Fill me in on Crosby dead. I said that.
Speaker 5 (15:58):
I thought you said stall Uh oh, I missurger you okay,
I'll give you the other two?
Speaker 2 (16:05):
Uh Yager ah h wait wait wait is it you
get this one? Get this one because eighteen is young.
Speaker 5 (16:14):
Yeah, Craig Simpson one time. Way, Okay, that's a pretty
good company, no question. I thought you said Yagura when
you said Crossby. That's why I was, well, then you.
Speaker 2 (16:24):
Should have give me that one. I should have either way,
you screwed up.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
You got three out of four Penguins.
Speaker 5 (16:31):
Hey over here, Hey, depends have the capitals in town
on Thursday night. Uh, then they're at New Jersey on Saturday.
Second second consecutive loss for the Penns in regulation, dating
back to Winnipeg over the weekend. It's the first time
Depends have lost two in a row in regulation since
(16:52):
October the eleventh and fourteenth, the third and fourth games
of this season. Cardinals speak the Cowboys seven to seventeen
on Monday Night Football. Last night, Arizona improved three and
five Dallas is three five and one. Steelers released quarterback
Being Bishop from their practice squad, and Jeremy Fowler reporting
(17:14):
yesterday that wide receiver Marquez Valdez Scantling was in Pittsburgh
and ready to sign with the Steelers practice squad. Scantling
has a couple of Super Bowl rings from his time
in Kansas City, and he also spent about four years
in Green Bay with Aaron Rodgers, so there's some connection
and maybe some chemistry still left there. Steel's getting ready
(17:36):
to go to La to take on the Chargers, and
the Chargers having all kinds of problems at the tackle
positions left tackled. Joe Ault will undergo season ending surgery
for a high right ankle injury suffered last Sunday against Tennessee.
The Chargers were already without their starting right tackle Rashaun Slater,
(17:56):
and they lost replacement right tackle Bobby Heart in the
first quarter of last Sunday's game against Tennessee. Heart has
a groin and an ankle injury. According to head coach
Jim Harbaugh, it doesn't appear that Heart's going to end
up on injured reserve, but his status for Sunday against
(18:17):
the Steelers is in question. The Chargers finished that game
against Tennessee with Trey Pipkins the third at right tackle
and Jamare Sailor at left tackle. They got some issues.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
We all do.
Speaker 5 (18:34):
Mike well That in particular well In Harbaugh don't have
enough time.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
To what's Mike Tomlin versus Jim Harbaugh.
Speaker 5 (18:42):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (18:43):
I'll look it up.
Speaker 5 (18:46):
Depends on how many times Harbaugh cheated in said matchups,
all of them. Ravens traded for Tennessee edge rusher Draymont
Jones conditional fifth round pick going to the Titans in return.
Jones is a okay sack guy and for Baltimore and
(19:07):
okay sack guy is a big improvement. Ravens have eleven
sacks this season. That's tied for the second fewest in
the NFL. Only Jackson, with ten has fewer sacks. Paul
Skeins of the Pirates is one of the three finalists
for the Cy Young Award in the National League. Christopher
Sanchez of the Phillies and Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Dodgers
(19:31):
or the other two Skiings led Major League Baseball with
a one point nine to seven er, and his two
hundred and sixteen strikeouts tied for the second most in
the National League. He was the Rookie of the Year
last year, and college basketball back last night. Boy if
I've been waiting for college basketball to return. Pitt beats
(19:54):
Youngstown State seventy four to fifty nine, Ducane takes care
of Niagara eighty three to sixty three, and Penn State
bet Fairfield seventy six to sixty eight. A couple more
local teams in action tonight, West Virginia hosting Mount Saint
Mary's in Morgantown at seven o'clock, and Robert Morris visits
(20:15):
Iowa at eight thirty.
Speaker 2 (20:18):
Abby's got your news coming up at the top.
Speaker 3 (20:20):
Of the hour.
Speaker 7 (20:21):
Got an update on the fan who fell from the
stands at PPG ac DC.
Speaker 2 (20:25):
Not done yet and with some new info coming out
the loof heist got even more dumb. I can't find
for some reason, Mike Tomlin versus Jim Harbaugh. It's like
because now that the search John. Yeah, the search engines
are like, Oh, Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh have a
vera Did you mean John? No, we think you did.
Here's what they did.
Speaker 5 (20:46):
You know, put in Mike Tomlin versus the corrupt nut
job brother Harbaugh. See if that comes up.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
Mike, what is it that you have against Jim Harbaugh?
I don't get it. I'm just kidding, just kidding, as
he's wearing his sparty hat today.
Speaker 5 (21:01):
Yeah, we started our basketball season last night.
Speaker 2 (21:04):
How sparty? How you do?
Speaker 4 (21:06):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (21:06):
Beat Coldgate by eleven? So I'm not sure how to
answer that question.
Speaker 2 (21:11):
Four out of five dentists.
Speaker 3 (21:14):
I was playing for I was.
Speaker 5 (21:15):
Expecting, was expecting more than an eleven point victory. But
he takes to Doug's where you can and get him.
Speaker 2 (21:22):
That's what I always say, Steelers Chargers this Sunday night,
eight twenty pm. That means our pregame starts at four
thirty with Tom Offerman and Matt Williamson and then he's
not killing that.
Speaker 5 (21:33):
By the way, Tom. Yes, him and Matt Tom very great,
very good together on the DV pre game.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
Well Tom's Tom's great and Matt is a liket. Yes,
savant is the work You could say idiots. Well, I
didn't want to say idiot because I always feel like
that that's like an insult. But I don't think idiot
savon is supposed to be indicate somebody's like's one hundred
and fifty pickups on the ground or are you know,
tooth picks on the ground, Like it's not like we
have a natural inclination. Yes, but idiot I think is
(22:04):
a misnomer for that, Or am I wrong? It's just
it's a harsh word for it, that's all.
Speaker 3 (22:09):
But he's not Steelers rain Man.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
Right, That's what I'm trying to say.
Speaker 3 (22:13):
Definitely definitely had six turns.
Speaker 2 (22:15):
Right, Yeah, definitely definitely. Idiot savant is a person who
has exceptional aptitude in one particular field music mathematics, despite
having significant impairment in other areas. So yes, right, yes,
(22:37):
he's just a savant.
Speaker 5 (22:40):
What's the other definition of idiot? Can you be both moron? Yes,
not an idiot savant. You're kinda just a derelic savant.
Chris Cardoki. I'll never forget Chris Kardoki coming up to
me at that AFC Championship game in Denver and he's like,
why are you on the field right now?
Speaker 3 (23:01):
I'm your backup.
Speaker 2 (23:05):
They let me on that in the fact that for
no reason you were. I was so banged up that
in the movie Step Brothers, they make the bullies name
Chris Gardaki.
Speaker 3 (23:17):
Oh really, yeah, he's.
Speaker 2 (23:19):
Like, Chris Gardaci beat me up on my way home today,
and it's just because you know, he knew him as
an NFL punter and thought that name was funny and
they put it in there. He was a good guy.
Was he not there this weekend?
Speaker 5 (23:31):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
Jeff Reid was there, by the way, we didn't talk
about this. Oh my god, I love Jeff dude. He
looks like a WWE manager.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
He means like a Colonel Sanders bow tie.
Speaker 2 (23:48):
His his like gait in his like just stature. Right now,
he looks like a Kentucky colonel. Yeah, totally, because he's
got like the the goat and his hair was slicked back.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
The amount of tanning he's done, he's basically fried.
Speaker 2 (24:04):
Nobody was funnier than that guy. Honest to god, he was.
He was like if Bubby Brister was a kicker, it
was Jeff Reid. Yes, yeah, no it was. It wasn't
that wasn't it. Sheets? He ripped the paper towel dispenser
off the bathroom in sheets when he got in a fight,
And I think it might have been with Matt Spaith
or like.
Speaker 6 (24:24):
No, I think that that was like appeeing by the stadium,
like behind the dumpsters, and.
Speaker 2 (24:31):
The cops busted them, and they said when they tried
to bust him, Jeff Reid assumed the fighting, and we
all thought, that's why wouldn't it be We should have come, man,
I should have reached out to those guys, and like
Red was in town too, we should have tried to
get Fanic on. But he did. He did a great
(24:52):
job and they won and they well McAfee was talking
about this yesterday. Do you think there's some thing to that,
those guys being in the building, Like it's like when
Lacey walks by the pool at Caddyshack and they all
straighten up. It's like when Mario Lemue walks into the room.
(25:12):
Bill You've seen it, a room full of shoes.
Speaker 5 (25:15):
They're like I think for Joey Porter there was. I'm
not sure for too many others.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
You don't think Aaron sees Big Ben and he's like,
I want to light it up today.
Speaker 5 (25:28):
No, I think Aaron wants to light it up every day.
Speaker 2 (25:31):
Yeah, Tank Carter was like, I'm going to light it
up right now.
Speaker 8 (25:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (25:36):
I'm not sure if Juwan Williams was inspired by uh
the Steelers team from twenty years ago or uh, well
all right, yeah, these guys are younger. I don't know
they I don't think they study the history of their
sports the way we did growing up.
Speaker 2 (25:57):
They don't, especially in base They don't drive me crazy.
Speaker 6 (26:02):
I mean, maybe Jalen Ramsey's speech was more impactful for
this game, but still I think that stuff matters. Like
when they were over in Dublin and and Tomlin got
up and gave the speech about d m R and
what what that country meant to the Rooneys and what
this game means to their family.
Speaker 5 (26:19):
I think that that's I think that stuff matters. But
I don't think Jayleen Ramsey got up there and said,
let's win one for the guys now.
Speaker 3 (26:24):
You're definitely not. That's what I'm saying that might have
been more impactful for this game.
Speaker 5 (26:29):
I do think, Hey, what Aaron Rodgers talks about that
making an impression on him as a guy that's as
old as he is and it's been around as long
as he has and doesn't even play on that side
of the ball. Yeah, that must have been a hell
of a speech.
Speaker 2 (26:44):
All right. Charlie Batch will get his take on it.
He was there. He was there, was of those teams,
part of that celebration, he joins us. When we come back,
the answer is always yes. When you build them menu,
you know what, that would make my base so much better.
Speaker 1 (27:00):
Request the Electric Lunch weekdays at noon on DV at
Kenny Rossford.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
We've always served our neighbors, your radiom of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
One of two point five DVE. Our next guest brought
to you by Ed, your stander and associates. They're always
looking out for you in this imperfect world. Before you
talk to the insurance company, find Edgar Ladies and gentlemen
from the Steelers Audio Network postgame show Charlie Batch, Ladies
(27:27):
and gentler.
Speaker 3 (27:29):
Super Bowl winner.
Speaker 2 (27:31):
Charlie Batch, Yeah that's right, super Bowl Winner. How was
that celebration for you being honored as part of the
Super Bowl forty team this past Sunday at Hinzfield or
an Acrocer Stadium Heightsfield. This took me back to the
Super Bowl forty days.
Speaker 9 (27:45):
Trust that there's a lot of players who haven't been
back in that long, so they were just still calling
it and and didn't realize actually, sure was your name.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
But it was really cool to catch up.
Speaker 9 (27:53):
Models go right, But it was really cool to be
around all of that, to see all of the gads.
You know, twenty years that went by and the stories
are still the same and regardless of how long you
have seen somebody that the stories just picked right up
like it never left. So it was just really cool
to be around and be able to celebrate those moments.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
Who's the funniest dude on that team?
Speaker 8 (28:15):
Oh my goodness. Uh, to be honest with you, Brian McFadden.
Speaker 4 (28:19):
Like WHENO and.
Speaker 9 (28:20):
Larry would go together, like it's like it's like an
encyclopedia of information. They just start throwing names out there. Hey,
where did Jack Cadam go to school? You're like what,
And it's just it's just really cool and everybody just laughing.
You know, bring back that locker room feeling.
Speaker 5 (28:36):
Yeah, so High State, didn't it?
Speaker 2 (28:39):
Jack tays, Yes, absolutely, yes, Oh my god, didn't he
Did he just pass away? I don't know, I believe that.
Speaker 8 (28:45):
I'm not sure about that one.
Speaker 2 (28:46):
I don't know. I don't want I hope, I don't
want to. Where did he pass away? Columbus? Wait? No,
where where does Ohio State go to die? Definitely not Lan.
Speaker 8 (28:59):
That's Mike Suitor there.
Speaker 9 (29:00):
Mike and Souter couldn't even say the name over the
weekend as we had a caller from a Columbus boy,
but I'd to let you know how you know the
rivalry were games.
Speaker 2 (29:08):
You wouldn't say Columbus.
Speaker 5 (29:11):
I wouldn't say the other place in Michigan.
Speaker 8 (29:15):
He wouldn't say Michigan.
Speaker 2 (29:17):
That's hilarious. Jack Tatum died in twenty ten, by the way,
so you know we're safely past the grieving period, and
thankfully we're not grieving the Steelers season after that win
on Sunday night, that's a rickety transition. But look, we
win the game against the Colts and Charlie you called it.
I was.
Speaker 8 (29:37):
I just had a feeling.
Speaker 9 (29:38):
It was one of those steals where everything was going
against the team. They were literally last in every category.
There was no category going to get to the game
that they were favored in. And just having a feeling
that Colts playing on grass being a little slower than
what they typically are, I just had to feel in
the defense was going to get after them and they
were going to lean on the crowd at Akashure Stadium.
And they sure enough did that because that offensive line
(30:00):
they were getting off at a split second slower account
and they were able to get that pass rush going
for the Steelers.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
So I was not sure that defense was going to
be able to respond when the team is, you know,
being just destroyed in the media for a week, the
fans are having a funeral for the defense in the
parking lot. Does that noise get through to them and
did that really contribute to Mike Tomlin and those guys
(30:27):
riding the rudder here or is it just this is
part of the NFL football that fans don't understand. There
are weeks that are up and weeks that are down.
Speaker 8 (30:37):
That's exactly what it is.
Speaker 9 (30:38):
And you know, anytime you have a game at home,
and of course no, you know, they don't necessarily use
the home field advantage like over the past few years.
But this was a game that literally players always say, hey,
we don't hear about it.
Speaker 8 (30:49):
We blocked the noise out.
Speaker 9 (30:50):
But you have friends and family that's going to tell
you about what somebody says because they're watching everything on
social media.
Speaker 8 (30:56):
So what ultimately gets back And of course you win
a game like this.
Speaker 9 (30:59):
Then you get up to the pony. I mean just say, hey,
we keep receipt. We know what they said about us.
But yet now it's time to move on because now
you have to build on that victory.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
How much did the defense looking better have to do
with Ramsey being at safety yet, because to me, it's
like I thought that things were in the secondary were
gonna look much worse, and they ended up kind of
looking better than they had been. And I know a
lot of that is because the front seven was so good,
but I assume we're gonna see Ramsey there for a
long time.
Speaker 9 (31:26):
Yeah, I'm thinking that that may be his permanent spot
right there, And I know injuries kind of put him
in that particular position, but they weren't giving up the
big plays in that particular manner. You know, at least
guys just running scot Free. There were a couple of
mistackles that they had here giving up those big games,
but in the most part they contained that offense of
the Colts who was high scoring coming into.
Speaker 8 (31:44):
This game, and it was just good to see.
Speaker 9 (31:46):
So I really expect to see Ramsey stay in that
spot at least for a long period of time, maybe
over the next month or so.
Speaker 2 (31:51):
They didn't really establish the running game. Is it a
situation where they didn't need to because of circumstance or
were they struggling to get there again, because I would think,
you know, all we heard going into the season is
that Arthur Smith was going to predicate this offense on
controlling the ball and running it and then using Aaron Rodgers,
you know, not sparingly but run setting up pass. And boy,
(32:15):
they're throwing the ball a lot. Not as much as
Daniel Jones did. But Jalen Warren had sixteen carries. Yeah,
I don't know, doesn't it seem like we should be
are we were going to be relying on the run
more than we are?
Speaker 4 (32:29):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (32:30):
I thought that going in, and I really thought that
Jalen Warren was going to have a monster game because
you're looking at the person on the other side that
everybody is anointing and Jonathan Taylor and that was going
to motivate him going into it. But for whatever reason,
it just looked like that five man front of the
Colts caught the Steelers off guard. They weren't prepared for
that front and it did kind of disrupted things early
in the game. But once you know, they felt they
(32:51):
had to get back into the game, that's where they
were throwing the football in that particular manner. So I'm
not saying that this offense made it by any point.
I'm not anointing him in that particular manner. They only
had two hundred and twenty five yards of total offense.
That's not going to could cut it consistently throughout the years.
It's because the defense created those turnovers. They had twenty
four points off of those turnovers. So that's just something
that they know they need to get better at.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
Yeah, their longest drive was fifty six yards on Sunday.
It's not like they're you know, mounting these big drives
and they're going to need to do that against the
Chargers on Sunday.
Speaker 8 (33:22):
Absolutely.
Speaker 9 (33:22):
This is you know, again in the nationally telebas game,
you know, Steelers Nation is going to represent they always
do in LA, so this is going to be something
that they're going to have to give those fans something
to keep stay into.
Speaker 8 (33:33):
This particular game.
Speaker 9 (33:34):
But the Steelers know this is a crucial another AFC
game that they have to win because when you start
getting to those tie breaker scenarios at the end of
the season, you want those to shift in your favor.
And if they can beat the you know, just like
they beat the Colts and that they could beat the Chargers,
they're standing pretty good at the as it relates to
playoff hopes towards the end of the season.
Speaker 6 (33:53):
How did they keep this turnover train going, Chuck, because
it seems to be feast or famine. They had that
game against the Patriots where they turned them over five
times and then all of a sudden, TJ.
Speaker 3 (34:03):
Watt doesn't have a sack for a month.
Speaker 8 (34:06):
Yeah, that's that's always tough.
Speaker 9 (34:07):
And you know you can kind of see that, you know,
those outside linebackers were you know, shortened the edge and
they were really getting to the quarterback there and it
was really rough.
Speaker 8 (34:15):
But again that's playing with proud noise.
Speaker 9 (34:17):
What does it look like on the road when the
quarterback now has the snap count as a weapon, being
able to now keep those guys honest. But a lot
of that comes down to being successful one first down
and creating those thirtain long situations. So I think if
they use that formula, you know, that's gonna be something
that they can, you know, continue to lean on.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
Did Joey Porter, you know, with the with the pick,
did he take a significant step forward in your estimation there?
Speaker 8 (34:41):
Charlie, Yeah, he's getting there.
Speaker 9 (34:43):
You know, when you get to that particular point, we're
gonna need him to take that next step. And that's
why they brought a Jaylen Ramsey in here so he
can learn, you know, how to play that position at
an all pro level. He has all the potential in
the world and there's plays that go by and you're like,
he didn't really need to grab in that particular manner.
Speaker 8 (34:59):
Just trust your eyes, trust your feet to get you
to the place. So he just has again, remember he's
still a young player. He just has to continue to
grow off of that.
Speaker 9 (35:07):
But until you eliminate those penalties, you're always going to
be a target for an offensive coordinator.
Speaker 2 (35:12):
Charlie, in the pocket is just nine days away the
