Speaker 1 (00:00):
Weekends upon as Mike Persuda with your sports Now on
your radio Home of the Steelers one or two point
five DVE sports.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Is I brought to you by Bridgeville appliants.
Speaker 3 (00:09):
DK Metcalf back in the Steelers' locker room on the
South Side yesterday, which, according to Metcalf, beat being suspended
for the last two games.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
I'm excited to.
Speaker 4 (00:21):
Have to be back into building around my teammates, you know,
being in meeting's, going to practice, you know, all the
things that you know encompass a week of preparation.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Now, Metcalf repeatedly said he could not talk about what
happened and what's going on. Apparently there's some litigation ongoing
or pending, complicated lovels to the incident in Detroit. But
he was asked if he had felt responsible for putting
the Steelers in a bad spot, you know, still needing
(00:51):
a win in the last two games and having to
get it without them.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
No, sir, because you know, I feel responsibility for my actions,
and you know that's it. But you know I have
the most respect and you know, confidence in my teammates
were still going out there and performing to the best
of building.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
I suspect and I hope that that's what he thinks
he has to say there, because I say, it's in
a really bad spot.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
It's incongruous at best. Yeah, I just just can't have that.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
I mean, there's no explanation for it, there's no justification
of it.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
It just you can't.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
It's excusing the fan, and I know the fan is
a jackass, and they should have dealt with him differently.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Not your first road game, because they got them back.
Now they got through it, and it's funny. I'm curious
how you guys think about this. I was hopeful they
would beat Cleveland so they could rest some guys and
you know, basically take the last game off, which would
have been beneficial, particularly the longer you go in the playoffs,
it would have become more beneficial. But the way it
(01:53):
crescendoed and now they go into it seemingly hitting the
ground running and having had to already play a playoff
game to get ready to play a playoff game, did
this work out better in a kind of convoluted, screwy way.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Yes, it might have, And one of the main reasons
is they didn't suffer the attrition that the Ravens did.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
From that game.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Well, we don't think so well, we haven't heard, yeah anything,
some stuff came up after the game, but.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Yeah, but nobody got carted off. You know, when Cam
Hayward chased Derek Henry.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Down, I thought he was out, Like it, okay, one
play in Henry just ran half the field and you
lost your all program exactly.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
This is going well, right.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
And then Cam went on to have one of the
best games of his career. Like I will never forget
that game that he had there. I mean, he desperately
wants to join the guys he looks up to in
that Steeler organization who have.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Hardware, Williamson said on the point.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
After yesterday met Williamson, he said he's an All Pro again,
at least second team, if not first team.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
I mean, I thought, I think he's had an amazing year.
I know they're people, we're not fans of his, but
that age six, it's incredible.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
But what called him forty five after the game.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
Yeah, so you know, forty five year old guy doing
that stuff.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
That's really good.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
But it didn't look like any major injuries and now
it didn't look like it, so yeah, this might have
worked out.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
It might have it might have other than.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Everybody was losing their minds for six days after the Cleveland.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Game, well, because it was lined up perfectly for them
to get smacked at home without dk Metcalf against Derrick
Henry who had been running all over everybody, and Harbaugh
finally figured out, uh, if I just run him, we
can win. And it took him a little bit to
figure that out.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
The one thing that people may someday grasp and I
don't have a lot of optimism that this will actually happen,
but it's a possibility, is people may grasp that in
the NFL, what happens on one Sunday doesn't mean it's
going to happen on the next Sunday.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Wait a second, say it one more time. I'm lost here.
Like our buddy Dave Damaschek. I saw a tweet from him,
he said, how.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Goodness to Steeler team scores six points against Cleveland and
do what it did against Baltimore.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Well, one factor is that.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Cleveland's defense is really good, Jim Schwartz, And Baltimore sucks.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Yeah, they and they lost Kyle Hamilton.
Speaker 5 (04:22):
They lost.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
I mean matchups are different, availabilities are different, games are different. Yeah,
I expect the Steelers to really struggle on offense. Again,
haven't done the deep dive on the Texans yet, but
my initial suspicion is if they win this game, it's
going to be sixteen to ten. Yeah, it's going to
be a slog something looking like that. Punting is not
going to be a bad thing. Just don't turn it over,
(04:44):
don't put it on a tee for them, because they
should have a hard time scoring on you. Also, but yeah,
they're not going to go up and down the field
just because Metcalf's back. You still got to protect against
those edge guys to throw.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
It to them, both double digit guys. It's going to
be challenging without Washington.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
It's gonna be challenging for Houston against Watton, high Smith
and herbig and even Sawyer's giving him good reps when
he was in there. It's gonna be a fun uh.
As our buddy Wolf would say, slobber knocker.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Yeh, I mean Logan Lee was making place yea couno.
Betton might have had his game of the year this
past time.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Yes, he might have. He's played He's played well in
the second half too. When they started doing the uh
they started mimicking Baltimore a little bit and bringing the
backers up into the gaps on the line, and the
vast majority of the time they drop out anyway. But
that screws with the double teams because the line has
to think, well, this guy might come, I'm better be
ready for him. And Benton's way better against single teams
(05:39):
than double teams, and Cam is Cam and Harmon's playing
very very well.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
I just want to point out that we didn't get
an opportunity yesterday to talk about the Penguins at all,
but they just rattled off five in a row.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
They did, and uh Sydney Crosby has been recognized for
that five in a row streak. You know, the NHL
does the three Star of the Week every week. Crosby
your second star for the week ending on January the fourth.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Four goals, four assists, eight points in four.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
Games during the most recent period, He's got multiple points
in three straight games and he had an assist on
the goal that tied the game the other day with
fourteen seconds left in was a Columbus yeah, and scored
the game winner in ot Penguins have won five in
(06:30):
a row season long five game winning streak. That's in
the wake of a season long eight game losing streak.
And in the Eastern Conference they're the second wildcard right
now with forty nine points. They're five points behind Detroit,
which is the top team in the East, and they
are six points ahead of Columbus, which is the bottom
team in the East.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Yeah, you know, it's these streaks.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
Just you win a couple in a row, you shoot up,
you lose a couple in a row, you're down in.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
The near the bottom.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
And when you get a chance to congratulate Jacob and
his Indiana Hoosiers, big win for Signatian company, knock the
crap out of Alabama. You know, isn't it funny how
when everybody can pay players now the SEC.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Stakes, he should be doing this all along?
Speaker 1 (07:18):
Are there like four and nine in bowl games this
year and seven against non SEC teams.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
But non playoff bowl games? To me or yeah, there's
just no point to it anymore. There always used to
be though.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
There used to be pride in just getting the Blue
Bonnet Bowl.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
You know, you guys would actually playing it, yeah all year? Yeah, right,
would play. They wouldn't say I'm gonna prepare for the
draft or I'm going into transfer portal.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
But it makes sense to me that they do, Like
if it were if that were me, I also would
not take a chance to play in a game that
didn't matter with my future on the line.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
Yeah, I just I hate to be alarmist, but I
think the way this is heading, it's going to be
the Megaschools and nobody's gonna care about anybody else.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
Eventually.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
How can you say that Indiana is one of the
final teams, like they're the favorite, but they're a big
ten team.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Yeah, I mean, you know, and they're if Indiana, but
they're not.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Like if they slump and they end up in the
Blue Bottom Bowl, nobody's gonna care and nobody's gonna play
in it. You know, it's gonna be big ten sec.
Maybe Notre Dame will probably survive all this because what
do you want to say, Jacob nothing, Oh, he's got
his mic, Mike. I'll let Mike go off. I kind
of agree. I think he's got a good point. I
think if you're not in it, I mean, you saw it.
Speaker 6 (08:35):
You remember Kenny Pickett sat out of that bowl game
against who was it, Michigan State?
Speaker 5 (08:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Right, yeah, right, right, would have won that game.
Speaker 6 (08:42):
Kenneth Walker sat out of that game and Kenny Pickett
did too. Yeah, like, what was the point of that game?
Speaker 2 (08:47):
Well, we won, so it was a great point to it.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
But uh no, I mean like East Carolina played pitt
East Carolina had got half their team sat out or
transferred and they played in Annapolis, Maryland. Yeah, like on
a Friday afternoon or whatever it was.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Hey, no, but it's fun to gamble on all that stuff.
Speaker 6 (09:07):
Mike, Mike, do you think if they had done the
right thing and made the Pinchrip Bowl pit versus Penn
State guys would have played in that game? It's a
great question instead of screwing it up and putting Clemson
it instead of Pitch.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
Yeah, it's a great question. Maybe maybe not. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
I just I don't like the way college sports are headed.
What do you think is going to be in the final?
Speaker 2 (09:31):
It's he's all smiles, all chick lits over there in
the ore is a big game? Hard to beat a
team twice in one years? Yes, it is. And they're good.
You guys are very good. They're very good.
Speaker 6 (09:44):
Dan Lanning, who's the Oregon coach, and Sig who's obviously
the IU coach of all active head coaches. Regardless of
how many games coaches, they have the two highest winning
percentages in all of college football.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
Wow, Signetti is just every time I see that he
had a press conference, I find the clips. Oh yeah,
he has been just listening to him and the way
he talks and his attitude entertaining beyondbelief.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
And I love the fact that he's like, I don't
keep guys here till two in the morning. You get
your work done and you get out of here and
go home. He's an hour and a half hour and
forty five minute practices.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
I saw somebody put a thing up on Twitter the
other day.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
It was like twelve head shots of Signetti, and you know,
he's always got that look on his face like he
hasn't taken a dump in a week and a half.
He's never happy, and it's the same like ticked off expression.
And it said like Signetti after a touchdown, Signetti after
a sec yeah, Signetti winning, Signetti losing, Signetti after a
kick return.
Speaker 6 (10:41):
And a season like this, I got a lot of
you know, I've spent a lot of money with game
tickets and merch after they won the Big Ten Championship game,
I got a shirt to commemorate that Womendozo in the Heisman.
I got a shirt for that when they won the
Rose Bowl last week. I spent a lot of money
on that stuff. But the one shirt I always wear
for a game is shirt I got at the beginning
of last year. Would you guys know is the Marlborough logo.
(11:05):
It's the only shirt I wear. Like I got all
this new stuff as the season has gone on, the
only shirt I wear is that Signaty shirt. You gotta
keep it because he, I mean without him, I mean,
this team is nothing.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
Do you have a pair of those red and white
vertical stripe basketball world pants.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
I've had those since freshman year. I've had that and
a issue.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
You're a freshman and you register for class, do they
give you your white vertical basketball fans?
Speaker 6 (11:32):
I just hated the games Thursdays like the Indiana student handbook,
and you get a pair of candy strip pants?
Speaker 2 (11:36):
Is it? One game Thursday? One games Friday? This week?
Speaker 6 (11:39):
Yes, Ole Miss, Ole Miss and Miami is Thursday.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
I know the NFL playoffs here, but just the reason
why Miami is sneaky, good dude, are you kidding me?
Speaker 3 (11:49):
Lost a couple people pushed Ohio State around, people overlook them.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
They got a lot of talent.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
All right, We got Charlie Batcher coming in and talking Steelers.
When we return, Abby, you'll have your news coming up
at the top of the hour.
Speaker 2 (12:00):

Speaker 5 (12:01):
And also, unfortunately, we're going to do a year and
review of all the things that ended up in people's
butts and the ers all across the country.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
As we said, Charlie Batch is not going to talk
about that. He was talking about the Steelers though. When
we come back the first mic randal.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
The holiday season may have come and gone, but it's
still hockey season and basketball season and the most wonderful
time of football season, the postseason. That means, if you
aren't on board already, it's time to blast into January.

Hey, good morning, how's everyone.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
We're doing great.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
We were telling people how much fun Abby and I
had visiting the Batch Foundation for Chris Smiths and being
a part of the team of elves wrapping presence for
the gift bags that you guys put together this year.
That is an incredible operation that you got going on.
Speaker 5 (14:11):
Oh, we appreciate you coming through you and Abbey and
everyone else who have volunteered throughout the holiday season, and
we just got like to follow the journey of the
toy and being able to deliver as well. So we
go through the collection, rapping and the delivering and with
this year we adopted for one or eleven families, which
was eighteen hundred and eleven kids, and it took over
seventeen hundred volunteers to make this happen. So we are
(14:32):
truly grateful. So thank you to each and everyone who
played a part in this year's holiday beat.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
That was so cool.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
You entire high school football teams there loading like working
the loading docks and stuff. It was just I cannot
believe how big the facilities and how much you guys
are accomplishing for the community. So I continued success to you,
and we'll bring an even bigger crew next year.
Speaker 5 (14:51):
Charlie, Hey, we appreciate you. Thank you.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
All right, So let's talk Steelers and Ravens. Boy, that one,
it was one of the all time classic Steelers Ravens games.
You know, two days after it, I am still basking
in the glory of that one.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
I spent all day yesterday.
Speaker 1 (15:11):
Rewatching the highlights from the game and going over all
of the scenarios that the Steelers were able to overcome.
I cannot believe the way that one unfolded. And now
they've got a real opportunity here with the Texans coming
into town. Wild Card weekend for the Pittsburgh Steelers with
Aaron Rodgers and company. What do you think is the
(15:34):
thing that bodes the best for the Pittsburgh Steelers in
their quest to get a playoff win for the first
time in eight years.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
Yeah, they truly believe.
Speaker 5 (15:43):
And if you heard Annon Rodgers afterward, he said, we
believe And that was the whole message all the way
through the week. Getting through this game. I figured out
a way to win and getting into tournament, and they
truly believe that they have an opportunity. When you just
look at the field, they're not afraid of anybody. There's
nobody out there causes them a threat, and they are
excited to be there. And ultimately here we are with
the new season now that they're in, and this is
(16:05):
the reason why Aaron Rodgers brought here to be able
to participate and get us to and get us over
the hunt. Like he said, like we know.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
He can, Charlie.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
If they could have picked the scenario in which they
entered the playoffs, would they have picked winning a big
game in a dramatic fashion such as they did against Baltimore,
or would they rather have rested everybody and just kind
of taking the weekend off before the postseason.
Speaker 5 (16:29):
Yeah, I think getting in and winning a game like
this gets people excited, because the last couple of years
they kind of limped into the playoffs and didn't expect
much in the first round. But during this time of year,
you have to get lucky, obviously with injuries, making sure
that you're injury free, and then you have to get
hot at the right time. And everybody's talking about the
Houston Texas winning nine in a row, but This team
here has won four out of the last five.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
So this is a.
Speaker 5 (16:51):
Formula that kind of reminds me of that Super Bowl
forty run when we had twenty years ago that we
celebrated just in November. Watching this team unfold and they
truly reminds me.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Of that run.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
How shocked were you that the Steelers defense stepped up
after giving up a whole lot of rushing yar to
Derrick Henry early, they ended up shutting him down and
that defensive line ended up having one hell of a
game when all of a sudden done.
Speaker 5 (17:20):
They really did. And you have to give hots off
to Cam Hayward. Man, this guy is playing phenomenal front.
I know we talked about Derek Harmon and the reason
why we bought him in the first round. That Cam
has really rallied those guys around. We're seeing a lot
more production from Keanu Bitten. Even Logan Lee had a
big play in the game. Won't show up in the highlights,
but man, he had a huge pass defense and on
(17:42):
that tip ball. So again, these guys are all rallying
the round and that starts with that leader up front,
Cam Hayward.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
Cam was brilliant offensively do you think they have enough
of an array of weapons right now?
Speaker 2 (17:56):
Even with DK coming back? Boy, I mean Aaron Rodgers
was really ringing the towel dry.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
They're trying to figure out a way to move the
ball there, and he took advantage of Kyle Hamilton not
being there, I think. But is the lineup going to
end up being DK Feeling and Calvin Austin.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
What are going to be his best options? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (18:18):
I think they'll probably figured that out. We all know
DK is going to be out there. But again, you know,
as you studied this Houston defense and they put the
game plan together, they're going to put the right Corps
receivers out there, depending on personnel group. So what gets
me excited about it is fact that nobody expected too
much coming from Cleveland to Baltimore. I didn't expect Aaron
to get close to three hundred yards passing. I thought
(18:39):
they would win the game. But just to see him,
you know, methodically work the football around and getting your
weapons back now a causes a threat so that Houston
defense can't turn around and say, Okay, there's going to
be one dimensional because he almost threw for three hundred yards. Again,
is Baltimore in a game that matter. So now you
truly have to defend both pass a run.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
Now, well, being that that's the case, I mean I
wanted to see them run the ball a whole lot
more than they did. I mean, the circumstances dictated that
they had to throw the ball a lot there in
the fourth quarter in particular.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
But is this a game?
Speaker 1 (19:10):
Is this a defense that they can go to their
two headed monster in the backfield and see only team
in the league that had two guys rushed for over
a thousand yards this year?
Speaker 5 (19:21):
Yeah, I mean those guys. I mean they're going to
be tough of front, there's no question about it. But again,
every week is different. And when Baltimore started kind of
loading the boxes that we dare you to pass, you
can't beat us, and lo and behold, they were able
to do that. So it's going to be a matter
of what Houston truly tried to take away. And if
I'm them, I probably try to take away the running game,
make it one dimension or see if that pass ruts
(19:42):
if the Texans can get after the Steelers offensive allowed.
But here's the beauty of playing at home. The one
weapon is going to be Aaron Rodgers snap count being
able to keep that defensive front off balance and not
allowed them the time up to snap. And if that's
the case, the advantage goes to the Steelers.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Charlie Batch, how about that crowd on Sunday night. That
was unbelievable.
Speaker 5 (20:03):
I mean, it truly felt like a playoff atmosphere. Me
and Mike talked about that on the post game. It
was electric all the way through and even up to
the point of the field goal attempt, the crowd was
still in and of course you still had a few
folks that were kind of in the you know, the
concession area, and they were attempting to leave. And I
think I heard that the today Steelers turned off the
TVs down in those areas, so they didn't even get
(20:25):
a chance to see it on TV. So they heard it,
they heard the crowd, but they didn't see what their
own as. So it'll be interesting to see if some
people are willing to step up and call in and
say they missed the moment. But again to the point
of the crowd, they were in it, and I was
watching those fans behind the field goal and ultimately during uprights,
and then when they started yelling, everybody else started yelling,
(20:46):
and it was just truly excitement and the way to
see everybody celebrated. So who kudos to those fans that
acting Shore Order need you again this week?
Speaker 3 (20:54):
They shut the TVs off, Yes, maybe maybe they Direct
TV and they didn't have NBC like a lot of people.
Speaker 1 (21:03):
I don't know if you saw that a lot of
people had to find other means to watch the game.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Oh is it okay?
Speaker 1 (21:11):
Well, the good news is this one will be on
Monday night football the Steelers and the Texans, and Charlie,
you and Michael be staying up late once again for
the post two am shift.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
Chuck, we're sitting.
Speaker 5 (21:23):
Back, We're like, yes we made the playoff that we
look at each other like it's Monday night. Oh my goodness,
we're gonna be up.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
Later a year.
Speaker 5 (21:28):
So but again, this is you know, you also have
to credit the schedule makers at the NFL, at the
league level, man going back and putting together a regular season,
a schedule in early parts of the year, announced it
in May and make this game the last game of
the year, and it goes down to the buzzer man.
That is an awesome man. Great job at the schedule
makers of the NFL.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
Charlie Batch brought you by Edgar Snyder and associates this
morning on DV Charlie.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
Thanks as always, Buddy.
Speaker 5 (21:52):
