Speaker 1 (00:00):
Eight three, three four one two w xdxter number to call,
or you can follow me on Twitter at mark man X.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Don't forget.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
I got a viewing party tonight at Pittsburgh Brewing Company
for the Penguins opener right off through twenty eight in Creighton.
Festivity started at seven registered to win and the game
starts at eight o'clock. I watched that Chiefs in Jags
game last night, don at Archie's on the South Side.
That was an exciting game. Trevor Lawrence, he came through,

(00:30):
fell down, got up, no time outs, said I better
score a touchdown, and he did. Trevor Lawrence looks like
a Golden retriever. He's not that classic good looking quarterback.
He's that classic good looking golden retriever.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
My Kansas City Chiefs prediction of no playoffs looks better
and better, Better and better, baby, baby, I can't get
the dusty voice to peel back. Now better and better.
The Chiefs thought they'd be good, No, I didn't. I
thought they'd missed the playoffs another two and three. After
losing at Jacksonville last night, Kansas City was up fourteen

(01:09):
to nil and then twenty eight twenty four with under
two minutes left and Jacksonville drove sixty yards in seven
plays and it didn't look that hard. Tell you the truth, Lawrence,
like I said, with a one yard run for the
game winning touchdown after tripping and stumbling like alignment stuffed
on his foot, I think right after the snap, the
Jags are better and they're tough for now. They have

(01:30):
a bit of an edge about them. And the Chiefs
have just lost that will to win. I said before
the season they weren't going to make the playoffs. Too
many extra games. Chris Canny, we got a sound bite
from him and just a little bit talking about that
the Chiefs are done. The Chiefs are done. You better
hope so, because let's say the Steelers win the division,

(01:50):
the Chiefs get a wild card, Chiefs would come to
Ackershroum beat the Steelers in the playoff game because then
that old mojo would kick in. The big news in
NFC North Flacco go trade the Bengals today, which is
like insane for a fifth ron pick. But here's what's
interesting about that. With Flacco out the picture in Cleveland,

(02:14):
if Dylan Gabriel gets hurt or sucks at aquature on
Sunday opportunity knocks for Shador Sanders and certainly for the media,
because boy, would nothing be better than that. That said,
I really liked them. I didn't realize I heard Tomlin
in his babbel today. The one thing he said that
wasn't totally babbel, was it? Dylan Gabels twenty five. Of

(02:37):
course Kenny Pickett came to the league as an old
man too, But uh, Dylan Gay, I think there's something there.
And I got to tell you, with the quality of
all the big time quarterbacks in next year's draft, you know,
they're dropping like flies.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Drew Allers stinks.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
I think he'll be a better pro quarterback than a
college quarterback.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Arch Manning stinks. Arch Manning will absolutely be Texas for
another year.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
He's already established that that would be his best course
of action by the way he's played. But the point
is Cleveland, if they finish real low, maybe they feel
Gabriel is their guy and shore up elsewhere.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Then again, do they have a first round pick? I
should have looked that up. Are they Are they done?

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Having lost first round picks because of the absurd contract
they gave to the massage guy quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
But again with Flacco going, both Steeler games got more
interesting now, right. You got Schadoran play for Sunday's game
at Acresshore. Then the next Thursday night, when I will
be on a plane in the Liverpool, you got Joe
Flacco probably start for the Bengals. We got the MLB
playoffs going on as well. La is up two games

(03:51):
done on Philadelphia, Millie walk who I'm kind of rooting for,
up to to Neil on Chicago. That could be the Pirates.
They have a playoff caliber pitching staff. That could be
the Pirates getting killed. Like Philadelphia and Chicago. The only
good series, the only one that's not two games to
none is Seattle and Detroit. Tried one to one. Seattle

(04:15):
beat Scooball somehow in game one on Monday three two.
That hurts Detroit, but Detroit reminded to win game two.
You know, you know what kills the playoffs in baseball.
There's too many layers. There shouldn't be that many layers
of playoffs. After a one hundred and sixty two game season,
if you won your division, you should not have to

(04:36):
play three series to win the championship. It should have
been like it was. They should have left it like
that in perpetuity. Two wild cards single a limb, four
versus five, then you go right to the division series
and the championship series. In the World Series, it's still
have to win three rounds, but you know you wouldn't

(04:57):
be division champs subject to that crap shoot like one
is in the wild card round. I gotta be honest.
My favorite period of baseball was twelve teams in each
league West and East in each league league championship series
than the World Series, because that was fair. You won

(05:17):
the division after one hundred and sixty two games, you
got right to it. You didn't have to wade through
crap and maybe drown in it to get to the
real series. Well, I would like to say conclusion that
you can't judge the honey by looking at the bee.
You can't judge the apple by looking at the tree.

(05:39):
At the bottom of the hour, we got Pierre Maguire
talking hockey. It's a big hockey day here on the
Mark Madden Show one O five to ninety X. The thing,
I'm not sure, just big and it's soft, and I
use a bunch of pillows and I saw the X at.

Speaker 4 (05:52):
One five nine.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
I told you, I told you before the football season
start at Kansas City Chiefs not going to make the playoffs.
They're two and three now after losing last night to Jacksonville.
Here's Chris Canny on ESPN. He's saying what I've been
saying about the Case Chiefs, and.

Speaker 5 (06:14):
Right now a lot of guys on the Kansas City.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
Chiefs are more named than game.

Speaker 5 (06:18):
This is the latest that they've been below five hundred
since the twenty twenty one season, and so you have
to wonder at what point does complacency set in with
the Kansas City Chiefs. Remember in the Mahomes era, they
played two months more of football than anybody else during
that span when you consider those deep playoff runs.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Yeah, so, I mean.

Speaker 5 (06:36):
That has to be weighed when it comes to what
we can expect from Kansas City for the remainder.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
Of the regulation.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
More name than game. I love it, testify my brother.
And it's not that the Chiefs suck exactly or the
Mahomes is washed. They're just born on from all those
extra playoff games. Like Canny said, two months more football,
it's actually more like three almost four more months of football.
Other teams are fresher and younger and hungrier like Jacksonville

(07:05):
last night, it would actually be best for Kansas City to
miss the playoffs and rest and regroup for next year.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
If we're talking big picture.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
But teams that you know, win a bunch of Super
Bowls and still have a lot of the same guys,
they're not thinking big picture.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
They're thinking now.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
But even if Kansas City would make this year's playoffs,
they're no threat to win the super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
But like I said a.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
Little bit earlier, if they would get a wild card
and the Steelers would win the AFC North and they'd
be matched in the wild card round, I'm afraid I've
got some bad news. Speaking of bad news, I was
listening to the Mike Tomlin press conference.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
Don't judge me.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
I was driving around and it's on the radio, and
there was nothing good on serious exam So I said,
okayl listen to this for change. I generally get the
highlights on Twitter, and it was just unbearable. It's very eloquent,
but it's all horseman or. He says absolutely nothing, except

(08:12):
like I said a bit earlier, he gave a real
good background on Dylan Gabriel, the Cleveland quarterback. I learn
more about Dylan Gabriel and the Mike Tomlin press briefing
than I did about his own team, the Steelers. He said,
it's very early in the process for Roman Wilson unquote,
and I'm likef Off, He's been here two preseasons and

(08:35):
twenty one regular season games. Very early in the process,
f Off, Let's go to Jeff. Jeff, you go to
Mark Madden show. That's in the world as Bobby for me,
no ar no, okay, goodbye, love Bobby Fermino. Love that

(08:58):
Liverpool song. It's just dumb the call in and be
dumb trying to think of the rest of that song though,
so I could actually have picked it up if you're
just tuning in. And if you are just tuning in,
shame on you. For six weeks. I miss Mikey.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
I do.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
I think of that whenever I listen to a Penguin
game on radio or watch it on TV. I miss
Mike Lang. I know we all do. And gets Off
and Joe brand do just a great job. And I
miss Mikey on a personal level too. He was such
a good friend and big influence on me and I
miss him appearing on the show as well.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
But the big news is Shilloffs is in goal.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
Tonight, the Latvian instead of Jarry, And that's sending a
message not just to Jari, but I think to turn
and face the strange to changes, because you know, that
takes away some of the staleness in.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
Game one right off the top. And I think Shilloffs
might be the better goalie.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
And I right now, and I think that that Dubus
and Muse might have thought that because they just you know,
got him from Vancouver. You never saw it coming. Why
they do that. They got Jari, they got Blumquist, they
got Morishov. Now, Morrishoff's their guy in the long run,
and if they had a good team, he'd be the
goalie right now.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
But they don't. He's out of harm's way.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
And Wilkes, like we've talked about a million times, but
they've lost a little faith in blumb Quist because blumb
Quist he came up last year. He didn't get shot
full of holes, but he let in some bad goals
and just he didn't have the right demeanor. I've never
seen him, even in the preseason with the right demeanor.

(10:46):
He's like very I don't know its plastic A good
way to describe it. I mean Morrishoff. He's athletic. You
notice him, He's conspicuous, he battles, So I think the
bloom is a bit off.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
One Quist Rose.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
I don't think they thought they could count on him
to be an NHL goalie this year, so they brought
in shilloffs and you know, for one night anyway, he's
Numero Uno head honcho. Don't know if that'll last, but
I do like starting him, uh for Game one. Up next,
the hockey talk comes sticking fast. It's our main man,

(11:25):
Pierre McGuire. Pierre McGuire up next to one O five
to nine, one.

Speaker 4 (11:31):
O five nine, The X has your shot at tags drink.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
Cash money like that secret Lucho dinner ros.

Speaker 4 (11:39):
I'm rich, rich, Rich, Gim listen all day for your chance.
Has some extra cash on one oh.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
Five nine The X. This is Doug Gottlieb. Here's what's
trending from the iHeart Sports Network, presented by Mercedes Benz.

Speaker 6 (11:54):
The Penguins open the season tonight against X coach Mike
Sullivan and the Rangers.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
It's the twentieth opener.

Speaker 6 (12:00):
Sidney Crosby Crystal Tang and have Guinny malkin the football
and after their bye week, the Steelers are turning their
attention to a Week six showdown with the rival Browns.
Pittsburgh three and one on the season and after rampant
speculation about a retirement announcement, Lebron James's second decision today
was an ad for Kognak Brand Hennessy.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
I'm Scott David SI looking for an exceptional driving experience.
Find it behind the wheel of the Mercedes.

Speaker 1 (12:24):
Mister Madden. Their mock might say no right now, but
in their hearts they're saying yes, yes.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
Oh yes d X at one five nine, the NHL
season is upon us. Thank God.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
Let's talk now to a man who's done everything there
is to do in the great game. You're gonna hear
one the Penguins Radio network this season. He is Pierre McGuire.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
Pierre.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
The Penguins are at Madison Square Garden tonight to open
the season and shive offs his in goal instead of Jari.

Speaker 2 (12:50):
Does that surprise you not at all?

Speaker 3 (12:54):
No, you know you look at it right now. Christian
Jerry has had some work to do to get back.
I think his confidence mark and get back to the
way he used to play. Archer Sea loss coming off
the championship season in the American Hockey League. He had
a very good playoff two years ago with Vancouver, he
was the MVP of the American Hockey League playoffs. He's
had a very good training camp and I just think

(13:16):
for the Pittsburgh Penguins, they wanted to try to make
a statement lay out of the gate. If you played well,
you're going to be rewarded, and any Sea loss has
proven he's played well.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
Totally agree.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
We're seeing a lot of change with the Penguins, but
I think Shilov's in goal tonight kind of force feeds
some to the locker room, to the fans a little
bit more right off the bat.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
Rug Wall said, and I agree. The other thing too
is you know, you look at the kids that are
in the lineup, No pun Intendant, Ben Kindall being in
the lineup, Harrison Bruneck being in the lineup. They're being
rewarded for very good training camps and they should be
really proud of that. It is hard to make a
Pearl Hockey roster, whether it's in the East Coast League,
the American Hockey League, or the NHL, it's really really difficult.

(13:59):
The amount of competition is fierce, and so for those
young players who have done this, I think it's a
huge statement from a Penguins organization to their fan base
and also a statement to the players that are part
of the organization. If you work hard, if you're diligent,
if you're coachable, you've got a chance to play at
the highest level.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
Well, those kids are going to add a lot of energy,
and like I said, take away the staleness. How do
you think the veterans will accept playing with kids, And
how do you think the veterans will accept a new
coach and Dan Mues, who apparently you know and rightly
wants a bit more structure.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
I think they'll respond, well, you know, he's got a
captive audience and a brand new canvas to paint on.
Because the last three years have not been good for
the Pittsburgh Penguins. Outside of Sydney Crosby having three straight
years and ninety plus points, this has been a team
that you buy and large has really underachieved, and so
it was time for a new voice. That's not a
knock on Mike Salivan. Mike Saltan's going to go to

(14:56):
New York and coaches dry eroff and he'll do a
good job. But you know, you the voice gets stale
after a while, especially if you haven't wanted that one
in three years, you know, and the last time they
won a playoffs series a lot longer than three years.
So you look at it. I think it was a good,
really smart move. It's an opportunity for obviously coach from
News to make his mark. I was talking to Scotty

(15:17):
Bowman about this today. Mark. I don't know if he's
done any Recer Child up, but this is for your fans.
Scotty Bowman was the first ever assistant coach in the
National Hockey League and he was only that for sixteen games,
and then Lynn Patrick and Craig Patrick's father stepped aside
in Saint Louis in nineteen sixty seven and allowed Scotty
to start this unbelievable head coaching career. The next assistant coach, ever,

(15:41):
was a guy that worked for Fred Chirou in Philadelphia,
And so you look at that, and I thought of
it today, and I don't know if you guys have
talked about it. Dan Hues was the assistant coach in
New York this past couple of years, and he's gotten
to Pittsburgh to take Mike Sullivan's job as a head coach,
and Mike Sullivan's gone to take, you know, Peter Laveolette's

(16:03):
job in New York. I don't think we've ever seen
an opening night where a former assistant for one team
as a head coach of the opposition and the former
head coach of the opposition. It's now where the assistant
coaches to be and they're coaching against one another. Gott
he doesn't think it's ever happened in the history of
the NHL, and I would agree with him.

Speaker 1 (16:23):
Yeah, I would bet that's for sure true. And I
think Muse will do well. I think Seally'll do well there.
Like you said, now you mentioned Brunick and Kindall. The
young kid who's slipping under the radar a little bit
because maybe he played several games of the Penguins last
year is Billy Cloyvenan. He's going to play in the
line with Sid. I see him as against the one

(16:44):
in the making. I think he could wind up in
the Rookie of the Year conversation.

Speaker 3 (16:49):
He's a tremendous offensive force. He was a really good
player over in Finland for a bunch of years. He's
from up north, and he's got how Keyrun is the town,
and he's a talented kid. The biggest thing that I
like about him is, and I like this about most
of the things that come over. Most of the European

(17:09):
rinks are two hundred and you know, two hundred and
three two hundred and four feet long and about one
hundred feet wide. In Finland they play the hybrid. It's
two hundred feet in length, the same as a North
American rank, but instead of being you know, eighty five feet,
why it's ninety to ninety three feet wide. And there's
way more impact, more collisions, less time and space to

(17:31):
make plays in Finland than any other country in Europe.
And I think that helps players like really poor even
and come over and really make the adjustment much easier
than maybe some of the other kids that come over.

Speaker 2 (17:42):
I think Bruneck will do.

Speaker 1 (17:44):
I think it would be wise unless he totally falls
flat in these first nine games, I'd keep him here
because I think he's outgrown major junior. We talked about
that some last week and watching him a Kenna play
for Penn State makes me realize why he went to
Penn State, because he's not dominating there like he did
in Major junior.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
It's more of a challenge, and Brunick's not on.

Speaker 1 (18:05):
McKenna's level, not quite, but I think the comparison applies.

Speaker 3 (18:10):
Oh my gosh, yes, it absolutely applies. The biggest thing
for Harrison doing it going forward is to show over
these first nine games of a trial run that he
can handle the everyday consistency that you have to have
to last in the league as a defender. And if
he can do that, that's going to be the telltale
signing that he should not go back to junior. The

(18:30):
good news for Penguins fans if he does go back
to junior and dominate at the major junior level, that's fine.
The biggest thing that could happen for him, though, I
was playing or the World Junior Championship, which this year
is in Minnesota, and that that is a fantastic developmental
tool where the Penguins could still let him go playing that,

(18:52):
even if he stays in the NFL. They could let
him go and playing that and then come back and
join the Penguins if they don't want to send him back.

Speaker 1 (18:57):
To junior now with Rust and McGroarty out, the Penguins
look like a one line team to me, Pierre, no
disrespect to Gino, but you got Sid, Raquel and Coyven.

Speaker 2 (19:08):
I think that's a potent line.

Speaker 1 (19:10):
But that's gonna force some matchup problems for Sid's line,
won't it.

Speaker 3 (19:15):
It will for sure, And this is why we talked
about Ben kindall before playing with Tommy Novak and Tomasino.
That line could be sneaky good if they don't get overmatched.
And so if they're getting the third d pairing of
the Rangers tonight, so that would be back in nine
and them Braden Schneider. If they get those guys, they
got a chance to do some work and that could

(19:35):
help the Penguins. But Shid and Raquel and Cleveland and
they're gonna definitely have a matchup Fishes tonight for sure, Pierre.

Speaker 2 (19:45):
What any of the Rangers? Are they any good?

Speaker 1 (19:48):
I'm not sure. I like a lot of their players.
I like the addition and the captaincy of JT. Miller,
but I see some holes in that lineup.

Speaker 3 (19:56):
I didn't think they did enough work in the summer
to make the team better. They going to tell you
that they went out and signed Dadvitoff as the UFA
from LA and they spent seven million dollars a year
on a guy that's more of a shop blocker than
an offensive force. So I'm not sure that's good enough.
They're going to tell you that they turned Noah Laba
pro out of Colorado College. He's a fourth round pick

(20:17):
and he's gonna play in their team. I'll see them.
Matt he's a good player. I've seen him play for
a lot of years. He's a good player. But the
truth of the matter is they had other pressing needs
and I don't think they were as addressed, and so
for that, I think they're going to have issues in
terms of consistency offensively. If Panering or Trotech or Miller
ever goes down for a long period of time, any

(20:39):
one of those three, they're in big, big, big trouble.

Speaker 1 (20:42):
You mentioned JT. Miller, who's the Pittsburgh kid. Will he
work out with the Rangers and as their captain?

Speaker 3 (20:50):
I think so. I've always been a fan of JT.
I've known him at the rank and i've known him
away from the rank. One of the best things that
happened in terms of me understanding JT being in Edmonton
for two and a half months when he was with Vancouver.
They were there for good portions of that time that
I was there, and I spent a lot of time
in the hotel lobby talking to JT. And I was

(21:12):
really fascinated by the way carried himself. I thought he
was a leader on that team. I know he's hard,
but I like that. I like that in players. I
like players to challenge other guys to want to be better,
and I saw that in JT. And I admired that
a lot. And he was kind of like the pied
piper A lot of those guys in that Vancouver team
back then at the beginning of COVID, they were following
him around and they were listening to every little thing

(21:34):
he had to say. So I liked. You know, I
think it won't work for him in New York. I
just don't know if the team around him is going
to be deep enough.

Speaker 2 (21:41):
Is he a center or a wing? He's played both.

Speaker 1 (21:43):
He's playing center, I ask you, because I'm not sure.

Speaker 3 (21:48):
I'm going to say that. I think he's a better
winger than a center. But one thing I do know
He's very good at taking faceoffs. I just like his
physical grit and determination on the boards. He wins a
lot of races. He's fearless on the floor check, and
he can drive you mess. If you're a start offensive
of the other team, he can get app You're pretty
good as a winger. As a centerment it's not as

(22:09):
easy to do that because you got to come back
and play deep in your owns off. So I prefer
him a little bit as a winger, but I understand
why the Rangers are playing him at center.

Speaker 1 (22:18):
Right now, we're talking to Pierre Maguire here on the X. Pierre,
I got to mention my guy, Vincent Trocheck, another Pittsburgh
guy playing for the Rangers. I think he's among the
best second or third line centers in the league, and
very few guys are better at playing that bumper position
on the power play.

Speaker 3 (22:36):
Well said, Well said, and well said. And one of
the best things that happened to Vinnie Trochek was having
an opportunity to play for Rod Brindamore and Carolina, And
the other thing that really helped him was having Michael
Peck as an assistant coach for the New York Rangers.
It rounded out and then his game. Brindamore helped him
defensively and being aware a lot that really helped him.
And then in New York, I can tell you that

(22:57):
Michael Peck and what he did in terms of help
him with face offs and understanding how to play deep
in his own zone helped him a ton. So I'm
a big Trocheck fan. Obviously a kid that did not
go to college, Root went the major junior route, had
some really guardy numbers before he turned throw with Florida,
and I think he will have a very large year
with the New York Rangers this year.

Speaker 1 (23:18):
You mentioned pen I love Paneren How could you not?
But if production dropped last year by thirty one points,
what happened there?

Speaker 3 (23:26):
Was?

Speaker 2 (23:26):
It just kind of a blip? You know? How do
you figure?

Speaker 3 (23:30):
I just think their team was lost right from the start.
There was a malfunction at the junction. It started in
the summer when they were talking about what are we
going to do with Jacob Trueba? Are we going to
keep them? Are we going to trade him? Are we
going to keep the vantage out A We're gonna trade him?
What about the potential of moving Chris Cryder that was
a dressing room and fluxed the entire year there. And

(23:50):
I think Paneren took that to heart. I really do,
and I think a lot of their guys did. Adam
Fox had a terrible year last year, and he's somebody
that I'd known for a long time, and really there
just was a malfunction at the junction there, I really do.

Speaker 1 (24:03):
You know.

Speaker 3 (24:03):
You look at what they did in the summer, and
they moved Keandrey Miller down to Carolina. I brought in
Scotty Moroll, a kid that I know very well. I
played with my son for five years in youth hockey.
And Scotty's already been sent to the American Hockey So
I just think the Rangers were a little bit this
combobulated last year. And again I'm not sure if they've
done enough to make their team better. We'll see how

(24:26):
it goes this year, but right now, I still think
they have work to do to make the roster better.

Speaker 1 (24:30):
Can the Penguins possibly get a playoffs block Pier? I
doubt it. But what has to happen because it's obviously
a long shot, Well, they.

Speaker 3 (24:38):
Have to get off to a good start. That's really important,
you know, that market. You know, you understand that if
they don't get off to a good start, everybody's gonna
start saying Wen's crossby getting traded, Wen's crossby get trade?
When's mouth and getting created? When's the bang getting trade?
So you don't need that around the room. If you
get off to a good start, all of a sudden,
he goes like, Wow, this thing could work. We've got
youthful enthusiasms and guys that guys that care guying on

(25:00):
to stay here. We've got some great young prospects in Wilsbury.
And by the way, I think Wilsbury is gonna have
a very good team. I watched them play against Hershey
Bears on Friday morning at ten thirty, and they won
the game in a shoot up. But I thought they
looked really good for a team that had a lot
of guys that eventually got sent to Wheeling. But I
would just say this, I think the Penguins, they did

(25:21):
one team that really has to have a good start.
If they're playing from behind after the first fifteen games,
it's going to be a tough year. They got to
get a good start.

Speaker 2 (25:29):
Who's your sleeper on the Penguins to have a big year.

Speaker 1 (25:32):
Not one of the obvious, not one of the you know,
established guys who can you see coming through more than
we expect.

Speaker 3 (25:39):
Well, you talked about coryven and I think he'd be one,
so he might be a little obvious. I think the
other one is Tommy Novak. You know, Tommy's been hurt
a little bit, but Tommy is a good player at
the University of Minnesota, he did some really good things
with the Nashville Predators. I was excited when he came
to Pittsburgh because he's a faithful player that I think
really fits the way pitch for Lights to play. Even

(26:01):
though they didn't play that way last year, I think
they're starting to final way they like to play again.
So I think tom you know that is a depth player,
is a guy that could really surprise some people.

Speaker 1 (26:11):
Pierre, we got to talk about the McDavid extension. He
gave a discount and only took a two year deal.
What's McDavid's purpose with that contract he accepted, which apparently
he suggested.

Speaker 3 (26:25):
Here's my theory on it. I've not spoken to anybody
in Edmonton, but I have talked to the great Scottie
Bowman about this. Today as I said it's time to
him earlier. So he asked me what I thought, and
I said, well, it's year one of Leon dry Sadles
eight year deal, so they match up on mat for
three of the eight. It's year four of eight for

(26:46):
Darnell Nurse, so they'll still have, you know, time left
if they have success. It's year one of four with
Bouchard on the back end and he's really tight. And
it's a new three year contract for the coach who
they really like. And I can tell you right now
Chris Knoblock is one of you know, Connor McDavid's favorite

(27:08):
coaches of all time. So if you look at it,
the contract kind of matches up with all those other
big name players on Edmonton that they have to have
that they're going to be successful. That's number one. But
this is really important and Scotty brought this up to me,
and it makes sense. Nobody knows if there's a no
trader and no move in that contract. So really, while
everybody's saying it's it's three years you have with them,

(27:31):
what happens if the first two years don't go well?
And what happens if there's let's just say a no
trader or no move in year three.

Speaker 1 (27:39):
Well yeah, yeah, but even if there is a no movement,
he can waive it. I feel like the deal at
s lengthened the price was an ultimatum win within two years.
I've given you some resources to make the team better,
or then trade me before that last year commitment.

Speaker 2 (27:52):
I really think it might be that simple, or.

Speaker 3 (27:56):
Or it could be you know what, I'm really mad
at you guys after the first two years and you
know what, I'm just gonna leave here and you're not
gonna get anything for me because I sacrificed a lot
of money to stay here. So that's kind of how Oh,
to be a snarky hockey person would look at that.
But I agree there's two ways to look at it
for sure.

Speaker 1 (28:14):
For sure, Pierre, speaking as a snarky hockey person, we
are not always wrong, and I think we might be
right with this one. Now, does McDavid's price bring the
market back down after Kaprosoft got paid seventeen million per year?

Speaker 3 (28:29):
No, I don't think it does. And you know what'd
be the two test contracts on that. It's gonna be
what happens with Jack Digel in Vegas. And what happens
with Kyle Connor in Winnipeg. Kyle Connor's got better numbers
than the Caprice off and Jack Gigel's already want to
Stanley cupanies in natural center Iceman. So this is gonna
be really interesting. If both those guys go north of

(28:51):
fifteen million, it's going to really create a market upheaval
for a lot of teams. And I just don't know
how winnip be able to pull that off financially if
they do have to do that to keep Kyle.

Speaker 1 (29:03):
Connor, Pierre real quick, who's your Stanley Cup champ?

Speaker 2 (29:07):
Who's your MVP? Let's get the cliched questions in there.

Speaker 3 (29:11):
Yeah, I think that Toronto Maples are gonna win the
Stanley Cup this year. I've never ever once picked the
Leafs to win the Cup. I thought they'd be closed
last year, and they were pretty close, but they dunk
in Game five in Game seven after having a two
nothing neat in their series with Florida. But I just
look at the additions they've made in the offseason. I
talked to Craig Groovey at length yesterday. He's in such

(29:33):
a good place as a person and as a coach
right now. I think his players really will feed off
him and the MVP. If they do win, I think
it'll be Austin Matthews.

Speaker 1 (29:43):
Yeah, depends what kind of shape he's in. He was
dealing with some injuries for a while. Pierre, I gotta
tell you, the Eastern Conference is so beat up and
not very good.

Speaker 2 (29:51):
The Leafs really don't have an excuse.

Speaker 1 (29:52):
I wonder if Tampa Bay might have one last one
in them given the state of that conference.

Speaker 3 (29:59):
The only certain I have for Tampa is on defense.
They're a little bit older, especially with McDonough and Headman,
and they've lost a couple of young guys that people
don't realize, Like Purvis was a pretty good player for them.
He's moved up to Nashville, so they've they've had some
issues in terms of defection, and I don't know if
they've been able to replace those guys in the house.

(30:20):
I'm looking forward to watching them play a regular season game,
but no, Tampa is going to cause some problems. I'm
a little concerned for the Florida Panthers. Mark. I won't
even pretend I know that Pritty's sock and three P
three P. You know the Sasha Barkoff injury is pretty significant.
Ka Chuck not being able to play until January is
pretty significant, And they're gonna have a boatload of guys

(30:41):
playing at the Olympics in Italy, and usually when you
come back from that, it's probably a two to three
week window where your better players are really fatigued. So
I worry about Florida a lot being able to do
a three pat but their team that's got a lot
of heart and soul, that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (30:57):
Pierre will be You're doing a bunch of work for
the Penguins radio network this year.

Speaker 2 (31:00):
Will you be on tonight?

Speaker 3 (31:02):
I will be on tonight and I can't wait. I'll
be on the Coolbe Armstrong and also with my dear
friend and superissar Paul Stigerwall can't wait to do it.
And uh, I'm so grateful of the Penguins organization and
to everybody involved with this, and I can't wait to
get going. Mark, And I know you played a role
in this too, and I'm forever grateful. And now I'm
so happy to be part of the family again. Really excited, Bar.

Speaker 1 (31:23):
You're on the team. I'm excited, You're excited. Let's see
what happens tonight? Great stuff, We'll talk next week.

Speaker 3 (31:29):
Can't wait, my friend. Thank you.
