Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's a pleasure to welcome out of the program. Perhaps
the tip of that spear he is eighteen year old
center Ben Kindall, Ben, congratulations onto your success in Pittsburgh
so far. That's a big leap from juniors to the NHL,
isn't it.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Yeah, thank you, Mark. It's been a big leap. It's
been a great experience and I've had a lot of
fun since i've been here.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Specifically, what's the hardest thing. Everybody says the speed. I'm
sure you're gonna say that. Besides that, what.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Yeah, I think obviously the speed is definitely increased, But
I'd say I'd say just overall time and space to
make plays is it's a lot tighter out there. Everything
happens is so fast, and he's got to think a lot.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
Faster now for a teenager playing center. You have a
real dedication to the defensive side of the puck. Who
drilled that into you and win?
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Yeah, I think just taking always taking a lot of
pride in that side of the game. Kind of just
what watching hockey and and following guys that play a real,
real two way game and just and learning from them
and and just trying to plot out to my game,
and I think it's a really important part of the game.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
It's a clicheed question, Ben, but who's like your favorite
NHL player?
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Who do you try to take after?
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeah, say, for me out of a habstunger and up
to two guys that have come to mind, where Brendan
Gallagher and Nick Suzuki, And I think I've tried to
kind of model model after each of them in their
own kind of ways.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
But yeah, what do the coaches here want from you, Ben?
What do they stress and how do they feed you confidence?
Because obviously that's real important for a guy your age
in the league.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Yeah, I think they obviously it's early, but they just
always stress the little details of the game, everything from
face offs to defensive zone, all those little things that
uh don't maybe show up on the scoresheet are very
important parts of the game. So I think just doing
(02:05):
those things early on in getting the trust is is
such a big, big key, especially as a young player.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Are you a kid that needs your tires pump to
be told you're doing good or do you kind of
look within for that?
Speaker 4 (02:18):
Yeah? I think.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Definitely. I feel I'm very self motivated. I don't I
don't need I wouldn't say, like a kick or anything
like that, And I don't I don't need violins. I
mean my tires pump. But yeah, like, yeah, I wouldn't say.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
A bunch of other young guys are here with you
in Pittsburgh Man Bruneck and now Coyven and a Pickering
recently got caught up. Does that make it easier having
like a kind of group of young guys who are
new to the NHL.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Yeah, it's definitely nice to go to go through it
with a couple other guys. Harrison and I've been been
together for a while now, and obviously adding Billy and
and Pixon now too as well. So it's been great
to go through it with all of them. And I'm
really excited to move forward with this young group.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
What's it like in the locker room and in practice,
because I sense kind of a new energy and enthusiasm
maybe because of you young guys.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Yeah, it's quite surreal to be in a locker room
with with some legends and some elite NHL players that
you kind of looked up looked up at your whole life.
And I think it's just a great, great vibe in
the locker room ever since I got here. I don't
know if I wouldn't say it's the young guys that
are creating that that. I think everybody here just just
loves to go out there and play for the team
(03:35):
and and do whatever they can to win, and I
think that's what we're doing right now, and then that's
why we're winning games.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Is it easy to get starstruck in that locker room?
Speaker 1 (03:43):
Do you have to pinch yourself sometimes, especially maybe when
you first got the camp.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yeah, definitely. At first, Uh, it was it was quite
surreal coming in and and and seeing all these guys
and guys like sid And and Malkin and Lepang and
and all these guys. So yeah, definitely early on had
to pinch myself. And then but once you kind of
get to know everybody, they're they're kind of just one
of your teammates, so you kind of get used to
(04:09):
it eventually. But yeah, definitely really surreal moment to meet
all these guys.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Did you meet Mary all the knew the night when
he was in the locker room. I'm even scared of him, Ben, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
We uh, a couple of us got to meet him,
So that was really cool moment for myself, and and
and my parents, my dad as well, especially, i'd say,
because he he grew up a big fan hockey fan
back of the dates, And obviously I didn't get a
chance to watch and play that. My my older family
and friends definitely did so that was really cool for them.
And obviously such a legendary in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
And and yeah, unreal which veterans have helped you the most?
I know you sit right next to Sid in the
locker room.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Yeah, i'd say, i'd say all the all of that's
to their part, especially just to lead by example and
show the young guys away. I mean, obviously Sid he's
an unreal person and player, but just just as leadership
on and off the eight is unmatched, I think just
maybe just getting to watch him every day, I'd say,
(05:13):
this is such a great experience and I can't be
more happy to get to witness what he's doing right now.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Yeah, other guys have said that, other young guys who've
come through. I mean, you learn a what talking to said.
He's certainly a hands on leader, but just watching him
what he does and how he got there, you kind
of absorb a out of.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
That, don't you.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Yeah, one hundred percent right. I think obviously, uh, getting
to talk to him is great for them, just getting
to watch him and just how he acts on a
day to day basis and practice for games, all this stuff.
I think he just excelled in all areas, all areas
of the game, and it's it's just great for young
guys to watch and have a guy like that to
(05:51):
look up to.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
We're talking to Ben Kendall of the peng was this
segment brought to us by eighty four lumber Man. You
got two goals that Beauty in Florida that give and
go with something. Do you feel like you can score
a lot at this level? What's it gonna take for
you to kind of find yourself in that regard as
your career grows older.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Yeah, I think obviously in this league the goals are
really good. So just uh, just working on scoring and
practice and getting gaining confidence in myself to be able
to score. I think those that's the biggest thing at
the end of the day, and and just when I
get a chance to make sure it comes in the net.
(06:30):
But yeah, hopefully I can develop into a player that
can can score for this team in the future.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
That give and go with Novak and forth. That must
have been pretty sweet. That must have felt pretty good.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Yeah, it was nice. I mean I felt me and
Tommy were I've been playing together for a while and
just kept building chemistry, so it was nice that we
got to click there and and score a goal up
for our team and and hope to keep ding that
chemistry with him. He's a great player.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
Ben.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
This has gotta be fun, right, I mean, you're eighteen
in the NHL charter, playing nice hotels. I mean, I'm
sure there are elements of junior you miss, but but
maybe riding the bus isn't one of those things.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Yeah, definitely, it's It's definitely a big upgrade from junior.
I mean, I had a great time in junior, and
I can't thank my my team back in junior enough.
But it's definitely unbelievable to get to travel and stay
in nice hotels and all this stuff. But at the
end of the day, I like, I love to play
hockey and and playing NHL is just unbelievable experience. So
(07:31):
that's the biggest thing for me.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
What's the one bit of luxury that you've en connor
since being in the NHL that you just kind of
couldn't believe it.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
Yeah, i'd say, I just say, like, I just say,
like getting to play in front of a sort of
crowd every night and and then NHL building, I think
it's just just unbelievable. It's it's a dream come true
and that's it's all they want to do since I
was a kid. So just getting to live that out,
it's in the greatest luctury I could ask.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
For Now, what was last night's game? Like, give hate
the Flyers already because you're supposed to. And that was
a frisky game, wasn't it.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
Yes, obviously you knew the rivalry coming into that night,
so it was definitely anticipated. It was my first first
chance to play the Flyers and already just uh, just
semantics going on. So I'm gonna say you to keep
keep playing that rivalry, and I think it's just gonna
only get more heated the season goes on.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
What'll it be like when you play against Montreal for
the first time, especially at Montreal which is coming up
pretty soon.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Yeah, that's that's really exciting for me and my dad especially,
I think we both with a direed habs and so
getting to play in the Bell Center for first regular
season game will be unbelievable, and uh, forget that chance,
I'll be I'll be super honored to play there.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Now, you mentioned your dad a couple of times.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
I know you and your your family are very close,
and I know your mom and dad were both pro
soccer players.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
How come you're not playing soccer?
Speaker 2 (09:06):
Yeah, it was obviously duft an option growing up. Played
both for a long time. But I always had a
love for hockey, eyes knew I wanted to do, so
it was kind of a no brainer for me when
I had to make that decision. But yeah, it's a
fun sport, but I always knew hockey's that is where
it's at.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
Who's your favorite soccer team? And this is a more
important question than you think.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
I never I never really watched soft growing up, but
I like my family's Italians, So if I ever did,
if I ever did have to pick a team, I
would say Uventus.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
Okay, that's not a team I hate, so I can
I can live with that. Now.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
I saw you also said this is a great quote
by you, Ben. If it weren't for hockey, it might
be a rock star. Who's your preference there? I'm not
even sure there are rock stars anymore.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
I think that might be a quote for my dad.
To be honest, I don't know if if I, if I,
if I would be a rock star. I think that
might have been a quote from him back in the day.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
So you're not a music guy.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
I like music, but uh yeah, I don't know if
I could I could be a rockstar.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Well, Ben, if you keep playing hockey like you are,
you might get to be a rock star. Yet you
seemed a little nervous for this.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
Were you.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
Sorry?
Speaker 3 (10:20):
You seemed a little nervous to come on the show?
Speaker 4 (10:22):
Are you?
Speaker 2 (10:24):
I No, not that nervous.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
I wouldn't say, okay.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
Good because you're on You're on friendly ground here to
be sure. Hey, thank you for taking the time. It's
great watching you continued success. I think you're onto something
and we'll see at the rink.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
Thank you, Thank you for having me.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
That's Ben Kendall, Penguins rookie forward. He is onto something.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
That's a real player, okay, Harrison Brunnick a real player.
Coven and a real player Pickering a real player. Morrishoff
It Wilks a real player. This team's going places. And
I've said before because it irritates you, but it's true.
The Penguins will be a serious championship contender again before
(11:03):
the Steelers are because the kids like Ben Kendall, because
the Penguins have a plan and Ben's a big part
of it. All right, that's good stuff from him. We
got uh Tyler Kennedy at the bottom of the hour

by Top of a Lunch Exit one O five nine.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
Very happy to have Ben Kendall on the show. I
thought he did great.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
Thanks Devin Shawl of the Penguins Media relationship department for
up having a kid like him on and you know
seeing him succeed is really important to me because don't forget,
I've been going to Penguin games since the first year,
since the nineteen sixty seven sixty eight season.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
I've been covering the team on and off since nineteen eighty.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
I saw Mario at eighteen, I saw sit at eighteen,
I saw Yoger at eighteen. And when a kid comes
to Pittsburgh like Kendall eighteen, who looks like a keeper, yeah,
it's a big deal to have him on the show
and watch him succeed and for him to get better
because that's the team I've supported since I was a boy.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
Let's go to Dawn don You're on with Double M.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
What up man? What up? Mine? Hey?
Speaker 7 (12:49):
Just wanted to highlight tomlinson aptitude. When they talk about
him as a player's coach. The comparison that I would
draw is Phil Jackson with the Bulls. You know, watching
the Last Dance documentary, you know he was a player's coach,
but he took the ball out of Jordan's hands and
he made that he made adjustments to make that team better.
(13:10):
And Tomlin doesn't do that. He doesn't adjust like TJ.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
Watts.
Speaker 7 (13:15):
They throw over his head right off the they snap
the ball and they throw it right over his head
every single snap.
Speaker 4 (13:22):
Why doesn't he switch TJ. Watts to the other side,
I mean try anything.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
I mean, well, TJ. Want doesn't want to switch to
the other side.
Speaker 4 (13:29):
TJ.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
Want is comfortable doing what he does by rote in
a mechanical and a repetitive fashion that anybody can figure on,
and it is easy to draw a beat on.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
TJ.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Watt would rather be comfortable in his routine than successful
in altering it.
Speaker 7 (13:44):
Right, But Jordan didn't want the ball taken out of
his hands.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
And yeah, let's let's let's let's forget about that fiction.
It's not like Phil Jackson told Michael Jordan.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
What to do, and if so, minimally, Yeah, I just
think there in there, oh Tom, let.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Me terrible, But there ain't no Michael Jordan's on the
Steelers anyway. Let's go to our good friend Bob the
Egyptian magician. How are my friends?
Speaker 5 (14:07):
Hey? How are you? Last time I talked to you,
I told you that the formula for Steelers is, in
my opinion, the winning the time of position and having
rogers to manage the game, which she said, manage the
game well, if you look at the game's last two games,
(14:29):
basically they were up by two two scores, and they
lost the time of position and they lost the game.
We know this defense is like you said, uh, they
are very very bob.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
Don't you think for a long time in the green
Bay game, for example, that the score flattered to deceive
the green Bay was behind and didn't deserve to be,
and the Steelers had a lead they didn't deserve. I mean,
I just green Bay dominated most of that game, and
that the Steelers lad as long as they did, as
much as they did and as late as they did,
was pretty much of a fluke.
Speaker 5 (15:09):
Well, I disagree with you. Yeah, green Bay is better
football team, Okay, but in both losses they were up
by two points, two scores, and they they didn't even
run the ball in the same Oh no, no.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
Question about that.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
Them abandoning the run against green Bay was was criminally stupid.
Speaker 5 (15:32):
Yeah, I mean, that's that was their only way to
win that game, and they didn't do that. Then the
same way with the Samsey they were up by ten
and what does he do. He goes for the seven
and get the interception, get him back in the game,
and our defense is not. They're old. They can't stay
in they they need to win the time of position,
(15:56):
which means ground game. And when I say manager, no, Bob,
I disagree.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
That's not the way the league is now. Time and possession.
You know, time and possession isn't as meaningful as you think.
It's about scoring a lot fast.
Speaker 5 (16:11):
Well, uh, I'm sorry, but the Steelers are gonna lose
if we're gonna use that formula because the defense is
not going.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
To disagree disagree, Mike, of course, he just said the Steelers'
best bet is to win games like they beat Cincinnati
the first meeting against the Bengals last year, which is
just a high scoring game.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
You got to approach it like it's basketball. Thank you
for the call, Bob. Let's go to Nick.
Speaker 8 (16:36):
Hey, Mark, I really really like Roethlisberger's idea, just like
you do with Ramsey taking over the slot corner. I mean,
we obviously have a problem covering tight ends in our career,
but also now that helps with our inside run. You know,
he's definitely able to stop help stop the inside run.
So in all aspects, I really like that idea.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
Yeah, they're not gonna do it, you know that right.
Speaker 8 (17:00):
I do know that, but I love putting it on
out there that it's a great no.
Speaker 5 (17:04):
No, no.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
You know what the funny part is, you know the
biggest reason Tomlin would even consider that, right, because it's
Ben's idea.
Speaker 8 (17:12):
Well, because he doesn't come up with it. That's why
he don't.
Speaker 3 (17:14):
No, no, even more so because it's Ben's idea.
Speaker 4 (17:18):
Well.
Speaker 8 (17:18):
That and we also have an issue with him always
getting coaches to work for him that are nowhere near
able to be.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
A better coach.
Speaker 8 (17:26):
Not saying he's a good coach, but he definitely doesn't
set up up.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
You know, you're right, He's got no coaching tree whatsoever.
And every coach who knew more than him and wanted
to get their ideas used he got rid of, like
Lebau and Arians.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
He ran them both off. See, he did a favor
for Flores.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
Because he was involved in a lawsuit with the NFL
and and couldn't get a job, so he did Flor
as a favor, but he should have kept Flores as
coordinator and got rid of Tara Lostin.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
Thank you for the call up.
Speaker 1 (17:56):
Next, gonna talk with Stanley Cup winner Tylerkennedy.

Speaker 8 (18:51):
Yeah, Mark, Welcome show one.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
Bundy Ptating, Dusty Road, Tomican Dream So be it Baby
the ex at one oh five nine. Interesting game for
the Penguins last night at Philadelphia. They stand seven to
and two after eleven games. Joining me out to talk
about it. A Stanley Cup win in two thousand and nine.
Always a pleasure to talk to Tyler Kennedy TK. I'm
not normally of this ILK, but I like how the
(19:15):
Penguins responded at that scrum at the end of the game.
I thought they acquitted themselves well when the Flyers got.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
Out of hand.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
Yes, I love the little bit of sandpaper that's sticking
up for each other, the little bit of hatred towards Philadelphia,
Like that's the first time I think I've seen hatred
towards them in a real long time. So sorry, but no,
I again, I actually like what Zegris did because it
(19:46):
like lit a flame under the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then
you know, they started playing better and they can't. I
think scrums make teams come together a lot more too.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
Yeah, no, I think the much responded, but I didn't
like what did I get you You're citing it as
a motivational factor, but when did Zegras get balls and
Anaheim you couldn't melt him down and pour him into
a tough situation. Then he's pulling crap like that last night.
Speaker 4 (20:15):
Well one, it's because when you look at his lineup,
is he's got Like Philadelphia has a pretty tough lineup
with de Laurier Siller on the back end, and then
they have that other Hathaway guys that will fight, you know,
and again like Viigres couldn't break an egg in a corner,
(20:35):
let it alone, doing that to a fourth line guy.
But the only good thing is, like, guys, don't forget that,
And it's gonna be a really exciting next game because
I think Sidney Crosby is gonna remember that. I think
guys on the Penguin are gonna remember that. So it's
gonna make for a really fun game and something like
(20:59):
fans can look for to, like I'm looking forward to
the next time they play Philadelphia, because there is some
some animosity, there's some hatred there, there's some looking forward
to something happening. And you know, I think whenever I
watched the Penguins play Philadelphia past it was it kind
of hurt because I didn't see, like any any hatreds
(21:24):
toward each other. I didn't see any like we want
to kill each other, you know what I mean.
Speaker 3 (21:28):
It didn't for number of games exactly.
Speaker 4 (21:32):
That's exactly what I'm saying. And now with that happening,
I hope it ex it ignites that rivalry again because
through all my years, that was the best rivalry, that
was what I Those are the games that I had
a hard time sleeping the night before because I knew
something was going to happen in that game.
Speaker 3 (21:52):
Oh you hate him, right, I mean it's in the
Penguins DNA oh oh yeah, like.
Speaker 4 (21:59):
And it's weird because as soon as we become a Penguin,
they're when you play in that barn, you don't under
you realize why they hate each other because one the
Pittsburgh Penguins have someone that Philadelphia would have dream to
have in Sydney Crosby. They hate Sid so much because
(22:22):
how much how good Sid plays against them, what he's
done to that team. So when Sid goes there and
you're on his team and you look around and they're
they got every sign you could think of around the
glass and warm ups call and said every name in
the book. And then Sid plays and he scores goals
and he pretty much dominates the team. Then they get
(22:43):
it out of hand, then you get, you know, drawn
into the fight, and then you start hating them. So
that that is what makes play in Philadelphia the best,
because you're on the Pittsburgh Penguins and we just do
not like Philly.
Speaker 3 (22:59):
No, I'm in your corner, as you're well aware.
Speaker 1 (23:01):
I mean, I grew up hating the Flyers when they
used to beat the crap out of us in every
way you can beat the crap out of us back when,
and as much as the cups I've seen TK, I
loved when you guys eliminated Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference
Final in two thousand and eight, six nil at home
in Game six to wrap it up.
Speaker 3 (23:19):
I waited my whole life.
Speaker 1 (23:21):
For that.
Speaker 4 (23:23):
Mark. That was probably the best game, Like when I
look back in my career, that was one game that
I always remember. Not so much the game, but when
we left the rink. It was an afternoon game. So
we left the rink and the bus was where like
(23:46):
all the players load, but the fans were able to
like walk on this walkway above the bus. Obviously there
was like a lot of fencing and stuff, but these
fans they didn't even say anything because we were all
outside the bus enjoying the sun. They literally walked by
us with their heads between their legs, and it was
(24:09):
the best feeling I've ever seen. And then at that
stadium there's the football and the MLB. I think it's
the MLB. They're all in a big like circle. Yeah,
and they have this outdoor bar bar. It's called the
Extinity Center whatever, and it's just like huge bar our
(24:32):
bus drove by there. I bet you our bus got
pelted with about forty beer bottles and it was again
just like awesome because you knew how mad they were,
You knew how much losing in front of their home
fans to the Pittsburgh Penguins meant. And they had a
whole summer of thinking about how we just beat them
(24:54):
six nothing or six to one, sorry.
Speaker 1 (24:57):
You're thinking about nine eliminated them there in OH nine.
That was when Max shushed them oh eight with six
nil with Bugsy scoring twice.
Speaker 3 (25:07):
Yes, yes, great though.
Speaker 4 (25:10):
Both were great, but the one from oh nine was
that that was just a different level just because of
what happened after the game, no question, and seeing the
response and their attitude after it was it was unbelievable,
Like that whole thing. Even you know, there's cities that
(25:31):
you go to mark and you you get there early,
you get on the road. You know, we fly in
around two, we get to the hotel around three thirty.
You can walk around the city usually, you know, especially
in New York. You go to Philadelphia, you literally go
to you go to the restaurant and you come home.
There's no going to a bar for a beer, just
because the hatred. You know, again, it's Sid's gotta watch
(25:53):
himself because it people know what he you know, what
he's done, who he is, and what he's done to
that team. Like Sid goes for dinner and he comes
right back to the hotel. It's pretty funny.
Speaker 1 (26:03):
We're talking to Tyler Kennedy here on one five to
nine the x TK. How crazy was that overtime with
two disallowed goals and both calls were correct?
Speaker 4 (26:11):
I think, yeah, like it was. I I like one.
I wish the Goali would have saved a little faster
because you know, you know, but that was a great
game going to ot Obviously we like to win. But
both goals I thought they were, you know, definitely not
(26:32):
goals like Gino jumped on way too early. Their goal
was definitely shouldn't have been allowed. But again, Mark, you
must have enjoyed seeing that scrum, seeing that energy in
that rink during that game, and when it went to overtime,
it just made it that much better, no, no question.
Speaker 1 (26:51):
And uh and it was great seeing the Flyers think
they won but didn't win. But unfortunately at the end
they finally did win. The Penguins have been in eight
of eleven games and again last night.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
TK. Is that a problem.
Speaker 4 (27:07):
Yeah, I do think it's a problem, just because eventually,
you know, you play the odds, the more you shoot,
the more chance you are that you're gonna score. And
obviously the goalies are playing pretty good, but they have
to cut down on the shots. I think they got
to front more shots. I think, you know, some of
the guys like I think Carlson struggled a little bit
last night and some other guys. But I do think
(27:32):
that will eventually start changing the outcome of the game
if they keep getting out shot. And I think it
all comes down to having cleaner breakouts, getting the puck
deep when they can, and just playing a smarter game,
Like they're playing really smart right now. It's how long
can they last? Like, how long can they stay on
track playing this kind of structure, because I haven't seen
(27:55):
them play this well, this structured in a long time.
Speaker 1 (27:59):
My paint about last night for that matter, Saturday and
the he lost to Columbus another shootout. You can't lose
every shootout TK, and the Penguins just don't have a
good shootout goalie like Flower the shootout maybe the best
ever money in the bank, but but shilloffs has been
in two shootouts, still have five goals on six shots.
Speaker 4 (28:20):
Yeah, I think Mark, I swear you you've we've we've
talked about this last year too and the year an issue. Yeah,
this has been an issue for years, you know. And
I don't think you can take up a roster spot
just having a shootout. Guy, I think, you know, back
in the day when we were good at shootouts, like
(28:41):
Crystala Tang was like almost like a guarantee to score,
like Crystal Tang from like oh eight to eleven, like
he was goalies couldn't read him like he was very
good at shootouts. I think they don't. I think, guy,
they haven't found their guys that have their go to moves.
And I'm not sure if it's they don't know who's
going the shootout where it's that you know, the coaches
(29:03):
isn't communicating like, hey, if we go to a shootout,
it's chrys Latang of Guinny Malkin, Sidney Crosby or whoever
it is. Because I think the more information you can
give a player on who's going in the lineup of
who's going. I agree, the better you are because you
you know, like I would think, and I know guys
(29:25):
would be practicing in practice their shootout move because hey, yeah,
if we do go shoot, I'm going second, so I
better know what I'm doing. I think there's a little
miscommunication there because sometimes we I don't even know as
a fan who's gonna shoot. But you know, when I
was playing for dan Baalisma, we would do shootouts. I
(29:48):
would say every second game, every second practice, sorry, and
and it was and we had a great record because
that's we've practiced so much. And chrys Latang was again
he was so good on his back and throw in
the fakes. I don't know if he's something's changed in
his curve or whatever, but he's not as effective in shootouts.
They're not giving him him as much opportunity. But they
(30:10):
definitely need to work on that because those single points
can cost you at the end of the year, and
they have cost it in the year. So again, I
don't know the solution, but I think what would help
is again giving players more of a heads up of
the lineup of who's going in the shootout. So they
(30:31):
can prepare better.
Speaker 1 (30:33):
Now, sid couldn't go in the shootout because he got
a game of conduct because he left the bench doin
the altercation. Technically, TK he could get a ten game
suspension for that. I don't think the NHL is dumb
enough to do it. Then again, the NHL is pretty dumb.
Speaker 4 (30:49):
Yeah, I would be very shocked if they give him
a ten games spence for leaving the bench for that. Yeah,
Like he's honestly, he's one of the guys that, you know,
like you don't screw around with doing that kind of
(31:11):
stuff with like, you know, just throwing them suspensions to
prove a point. You know, my first year, I I
jumped off the bench and I thought Luke shen and
actually Luke shn like pumbled me. But I got a
game for it, you know. And I literally jumped off
the bench to fight someone, you know, and Sidney Cross
he didn't end up actually fighting him, And there's a
(31:34):
big difference. But I don't think I think this will
be kind of swiped under the rug and kind of
moved on, because again it's Sidney Crosby. You look at
his track record, Like, I don't know if there's a
better face for the NHL still than Sidney Crosby.
Speaker 1 (31:50):
Uh would you keep Bruneck and Kindle or send him
back to junior? What are the pros and cons?
Speaker 4 (31:56):
Kendle, he's up for sure, he's showing me enough and
he's made enough, and he's bringing enough energy and he
skates well like he deserves to stay up. I think
even if he struggles a little bit, I think it's
better staying up here in practicing and being around team.
And he's earned a spot in the lineup so far,
(32:16):
and he's and he's produced. I think he's definitely a
guy that can stay up and and help develop. He's
better better to develop up here than going back and
riding the bus. That's I think, that's like it's the worst.
Bruni's a different story. I think he struggled a lot,
a little bit more than Kindle. And obviously it's because
(32:39):
he plays defense, and I think defense mistakes get emphasized
because you're the last defense before you know goals and
all that stuff. But it's it's it's when you when
I when I think of brunic then I start thinking of, well,
where is the team going? Like what what what is
this team? Is it a team that we're trying to
(33:02):
get more young guys in and willing to like maybe
not make playoffs to give these guys experience. Or are
these twelve games give us almost like a false hope
that we have a team that can make a deep run.
And do I think we might make playoffs? I do.
I just think we're scoring from a lot of different place.
Speaker 3 (33:22):
It's a bad to TK. I think that's what makes
me think there's a chance.
Speaker 4 (33:28):
But for Bruneck, it's it's like he's like a fifty
to fifty for me because I can see both where
he goes down and he's the guy, and I think
confidence as a defenseman, you need that confidence. And we
go down like he's gonna come, He's gonna go down.
He's gonna go back and be the stud and have
confidence and hopefully it oozes all year and then next
(33:50):
training camp. He is the guy and he he has
that like I've been here, done that. But is it
gonna hurt his development? Sure? I don't think it ever
hurts when a guy goes back and he is relied
on in every situation and you learn and he gets
called up. When Wilkes makes playoffs and his junior team's done.
(34:13):
I think that gives him enough experience. So I think
Kendall will stay. Brunick might be sent back.
Speaker 5 (34:19):
In my opinion, yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (34:20):
It's tough because if you think Brunick's one of your
best three right side of defensemen, I mean I think
he is.
Speaker 3 (34:26):
But then again, Dumba is not too terrible either.
Speaker 1 (34:28):
I agree that Kendall should stay, but honestly, Tee Kat
keep them both because I think the energy they bring,
an enthusiasm, and the way they've transformed the room and
just the routine is big.
Speaker 4 (34:41):
Even like when you see pitchers on the ice and
then practice in the room, those two are always smiling. Yeah,
you know, it's like and when you're a guy going
to work and sometimes we've all you know, when you're
in work and you're a veteran guy, you know you're
a little bit grumpier the more the years go on.
And when you see a young I'll come in in
and enjoying every second and makes you take a step
(35:03):
back and be like, wow, this this kid is like
maybe I'm taking it for granted. And another reason why
I think that young energy is good. They push the
pace in practice right, they're always full of energy. Like
young guys are the guys that when when you're tired,
the young guys are still full of energy. They're the
ones that make the speed of practice move up. You know,
(35:26):
Dan balim woant to say, TK, part of your job
is to make sure our team plays really well in practice,
and you push the pace and you push these guys,
you know, out of their elements sometimes in practice. And
then another thing I always noticed more at the end
of my career mark was when I saw a young
guy and I saw him doing well, it made me
(35:47):
pick up my socks as a veteran guy because I
knew he wasn't he was there to steal my spot,
like he was in the weeds, poking his head out
going if you if you take a night off because
you're being a baby, or you're being tired and feeling
sorry for yourself, this kid is going to take it.
And I think that kind of stuff means a lot
(36:11):
when you're building a team because it makes sure everyone's
on their toes and it's a good environment. It's one
thing to lose your spot to a player that's been
in the league, but it's another thing to lose your
spot to a young guy who's hungry and is ready
for the moment.
Speaker 1 (36:28):
Finally, TK, how much do you buy into the seven
to two and two start? How legit is this team
as a playoff contender? Like, like we agreed a moment
ago in an Eastern Conference that's.
Speaker 3 (36:38):
Not real good?
Speaker 4 (36:43):
Well, one like what I really like about this team,
there's a different feel in a different attitude and it
just feels different. And I think it starts with having
a new coach. You can see there's a different mojo
with these guys. Do I think they'll make playoffs? Yes?
And why I think they make playoffs? I have a
(37:03):
lot They have a lot of similarities to the Washington
Capitals when they were aging and they made you know,
they've been playing well for the last two years. And
what I really like is one another one is where
they're getting their scoring from the biggest problem, one of
the bigger problems we had last year was depth scoring.
(37:24):
We only had two lines scoring right and now when
you look at the lineup, different guys are scoring. Young
guys are scoring. They have a third line, They have
a fourth line that plays a grinder fourth line like
they enjoy wearing teams like they know what they're doing.
They enjoy wearing teams down. So I like the dynamic
(37:45):
of the team. And again I I'm pleasantly surprised of
how well they've played. Do I think they're gonna make
a deep, deep run? Probably not? But are they gonna
make playoffs? And maybe someone maybe? But again we've only
played twelve games, and the teams we've played haven't been
(38:07):
all star teams like like San Jose, like teams Saint
Louis like those. I want to see them play. You know,
some teams like when Florida is healthy, you know the
Carolina Hurricanes. Teams that are like that, have New Jersey.
New Jersey, a team that are looking to be more
(38:28):
than just make the playoffs. They're they're looking to go
for deep runs. That's where you're gonna see the test
for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Speaker 1 (38:35):
But so far, so so good for me, TK, great stuff,
Thank you so much for taking the time.
Speaker 3 (38:40):
We'll do it again real soon.
Speaker 4 (38:42):
All right, thanks for having me, Mark.
Speaker 1 (38:43):
That's the great Toddler Kennedy, always a pleasure to have
on the two thousand and nine Stanley Cup champion. Now
it's time to ask Mark anything eight three three four
one two w xdx. That's a three three four one
two w xdx. Or leave a talk back using the
microphone icon at the iHeartMedia app. I'm Mark Man one
O five nine.
Speaker 6 (39:02):
It's The Woody Show weekday mornings at six Pretty cool.
Speaker 11 (39:05):
It is a super cool v X at one oh five.
Speaker 12 (39:08):
Nine and Kenny Ross SUPERU now through October thirty first
fight any new in stock twenty twenty five super and
receive six years, one hundred thousand miles.
Speaker 3 (39:16):
Execut this show. Now, I'm gonna cut you off before
you gonna make a joke with the X at one
O five nine.
Speaker 1 (39:24):
Time to ask Mark anything blacklist by People's Natural Gas,
People's Hyphengas dot Com. Get your calls in now eight
three three four one two w xdx. Liverpool trailing two
nil in the second half. Basically a lineup of a
lot of our substitutes against Crystal Palace in the League Cup.
But that's no excuse. Is just isn't a great season
(39:45):
after having won the league last year.
Speaker 5 (39:49):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (39:50):
If you want to watch the River Hans, they have
their playoff game first run in the USL Championship against
Hartford on Saturday night at high Mark Stadium. So check
out the River Hunts website get your tickets. It's what
is it like now, eight or nine straight salots for
the river Hunts this year and it's going to be
a big crowd and a big events.
Speaker 3 (40:11):
Let's go to a talkback.
Speaker 13 (40:13):
Hey Newman here, I was wondering what you think about
Arnie Slot starting a bunch of junior players today. I
get that it's an inferior tournament and I get, you know,
the load management, especially with a number of games they
have coming up, but I just feel like today was
a good opportunity for the first team to get something
going finally, and it's not looking good.
Speaker 1 (40:34):
There's certainly an argument to be made, like you just did,
I don't have a problem either way. I mean, you
never want to see them lose, but I've also seen
lineups of substitutes win in the League Cup for Liverpool
and get them deep into the tournament until the starters
came in and took over, like in the quarters, semis
and finals. So I'm just disappointed to be trailing because
(40:55):
it's been a rough season after a great start.
Speaker 3 (41:00):
Let's go to a talkback.
Speaker 12 (41:01):
Answer your question Mark, this game feels like we're gonna
play the Patriots with Brady, We're gonna get it's gonna
be a slaughter. We don't intimidate anyone anymore. We make mistakes,
so we can't out play anyone. And with the way
the CBA is and about limiting contact practice, I don't
(41:23):
see how we're gonna correct this this season.
Speaker 1 (41:26):
I don't think the problem is that they can't have
contacted practice. I think they have a lot of older
players on defense that are overpaid and wanted to get
the bag more than win, and now they stink. That's
what I think is happening. And I think the problem
is compounded by the Steelers stink. Their defense stink, They're
(41:46):
coaching stinks, and they're playing the best offense in football
on Sunday, I mean Sunday.
Speaker 3 (41:50):
I mean, you know what it would be so.
Speaker 1 (41:53):
Steelers to go against the grain and make a game
of it and maybe even win that A're not totally
dismissing that possibility, but I'm calling it very unlikely because
Indy's a juggernaut and this could be like a twenty
or thirty point margin of defeat for the Steelers.
Speaker 11 (42:10):
Let's go to a talkback, Hey, Mark do you think
there's the chance the Steelers could lose nine of their
last ten games of the season in finish five and twelve,
Because I look at that schedule.
Speaker 3 (42:22):
It's brutal.
Speaker 11 (42:23):
And the only win I see as a definite is
the Monday night game December fifteenth against Miami.
Speaker 4 (42:30):
What do you think.
Speaker 3 (42:31):
I'm not sure that's a definite win.
Speaker 1 (42:33):
I think Miami had a good game this past week,
and I think they're capable of scoring points and the
Steelers could be outscored, no question about that. But yeah,
Pete Prisco from CBS said they could lose eight or
nine in a row, and that was before they lost
to Green Bay. I think it's a bad football team.
And I still think they're gonna finish around five hundred
(42:54):
because that's what they do. But it's a bad football
team and right now it's playing really bad. And if
they could won, not by Indy, I think things could
go from bad to worse and stay worse. I think
if they lose to Indy by I don't know twenty
or even you know, seventeen or whatever, that things could
could could really snowball in a bad direction. That that
(43:17):
excrement could could trickle not trickle, but just flow freely
down hill.
Speaker 3 (43:22):
Let's go to a talkback.
Speaker 10 (43:23):
Hey, Marcus is Dan. I just want to comment regarding
your Steelers comments about them losing this week, probably pretty
embarrassing fashion. Their defense is trash averaging, allowing thirty plus
points like it's it's not a good look at all.
I would bet the house on the Colts at least
(43:46):
minus ten point five.
Speaker 1 (43:48):
Well, the culturally favored by three, which strikes me as
a narrow spread. So get to bed Parks, the sportsbook
app and lay your money down. Yeah, I think the
culture is certainly going to cover three points. Then again,
like all these Steeler diehard is saying, Vegas knows it's
gonna be real close. Could go either way. What good
(44:08):
to a talkback? Okay, we lost that one, Okay, get
your calls in now though. Anyway, eight three three four
one two w xd x. That's eight three three four
one two w xd x. I'm next gonna talk about
that that lost to the Flyers last night. A little
bit in that rat Trevor Zegras one oh five ninety x.
Speaker 3 (44:28):
Now it's your chance to win. One thousand dollars
Speaker 13 (44:31):
