Speaker 1 (00:01):
The last segment brought to us by shop dot Steelers
dot com. That's where to get it. Joining me now,
former Steelers quarterback got a great podcast with Trey Essex.
You hear him on the Steelers post game show on
DVE with Mike Pursuiter. We walk into the program, Charlie Batch, Charlie,
Willie Cologne said that the Steelers don't yet have an
identity on offense.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
He's not sure what they do. Well, do you agree
with that?
Speaker 3 (00:26):
I absolutely agree with that, And when you just look
at the statistics, it mirrors that because when you know
the way at the bottom of the league running the football,
they try to identify as a run for his offense
and right now that's not happening. But they're figuring out
ways to win. So I do agree with Willie.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
Yeah, figuring out ways to win is one thing now.
But you know this formation with the seven offensive lineman
basically and giving Rogers a lot fewer targets to work with.
Will that beat good teams in big games?
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Charlie? Will it come from behind when they trail?
Speaker 3 (00:58):
And that's the part where we're going to have to
see figure out as we move forward. Yes, the big
package is working, but it's not like DK is on
the field when that package is on there. They use
Ben Scronic on there. So if you're a defense you're
not fearing that, even though Ben Head does have some
catches on a year. So they're going to have to
figure out ways to get this going because right now
they don't. Do you know one thing, Well, unfortunately, that's
(01:20):
just what we are.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
What do you like and dislike about the big package?
Speaker 3 (01:26):
When you identify with that big package, you have a
lot of they have to be big, big personnel on
the field from a defensive perspective, so a lot of
times you do now have the advantage and if you
look at the numbers, I think they're about a four
yard when they have that package running the football. But
unfortunately it weakends because if you have DK on the field,
for instance, you can maybe double team him and you're
not going to use Anderson as a receiver. So that's
(01:48):
the short fall of that particular package.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Does it prohibit Rogers from being Rogers? Does he have
enough weapons? He gets protection, that's obviously a big part
of this Charlie to prevent him from getting hit, but
doesn't allow him to explore what he can be.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Yeah, and he wants to do more at the line
of scrimmage. You know, even early on in that Minnesota game,
the first two drives didn't go the way that they
were going to hope it went. It wasn't until till
the third drive where they hit DK on that eighty
yard touchdown pass. So right now, because they're not as
successful on first down as minimizing the opportunities that they
can continue to sustain drives. So we have yet to
(02:28):
really see what the full arsenal of this offense is.
I just know Aaron is eager to push the ball
down the field. Unfortunately, we don't know if that's going
to happen based off the running game on what you're
going to see here.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
You know what it reminds me of Charlie.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
It reminds me of when Arians got fired as coordinator
because he didn't do enough to protect Ben. But maybe
Ben didn't do enough after that. You know, no risk,
no biscuit. Maybe if they make Rogers a bit more vulnerable,
they get more out of them. I mean it is risk,
but I mean you rep reward too.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
Yeah, you're right, and need I mean breaking Parrison there
when you talked about Aarons and Roethlisberger, but right now especially,
he didn't get hit as much in the Minnesota game,
but prior to that he had eighteen hits, and at
that particular point, his body is not going to be
able to sustain those hits throughout the course of the season.
As they shored up protection, those hits minimize a little
bit more in that Minnesota game. But now, what does
(03:20):
that look like? How are they gonna now try to
target and really attack Miles Garrett because you can't leave
me one on one with any of those tackles, So
at some point you're gonna have to demand a double
team and it's going to free up some opportunity for
someone else. So until they prove that they can pass
Retecht on a consistent basis, that's whenever you'll start seeing
the passes being pushed down the field more of a
(03:40):
Right now, they're just not doing that.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
How do you feel if you're John new and Friar
move because this offense was supposed to be based around
the tight ends and not just blocking, and now they're
kind of on the pay no mind list.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Yeah, that's a big, big head scratcher for me because
I really expected friar Move to benefit from John new
Smith getting here. Right now, the only person benefited is
Darnell Washington and Smith and Friarmo's numbers aren't where they are.
I don't know if that's based off week the week,
but I really expected more from those two, and right
now they're putting up predetrian numbers and I know they're
(04:13):
looking to add more to this offense.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Do you think they'll eventually get away more from the
big package. I think they'll use it against Cleveland, which
I get cause you know it gives you a chance
to minimize Miles Garrett. But you know Mike Tomlin Charlie,
the more something works, the more he sticks with it,
regardless of who they're playing.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Yeah, and he's banking on the fact that defensively they're
creating those turnovers and offensively they're not turning the football over.
So do I expect to see more of that big package?
Speaker 4 (04:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Possibly if they're calling for potential rain and if that happens,
then yeah, you're going to run the football in that
particular manner. But as we now look and see where
everything is at at this point, it's just my boggling
and that's why you had the bye week, and the
bye week you're supposed to do some self reflection and
figure out ways to break break some tendencies now coming
up this bow week? Does that happen in this particular week?
(05:03):
And I think that's all. We're all the things that
we're going to be paying attention to.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
Talking to Charlie Batch, this segment brought to us by
eighty four Lumber Dynasty partner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Charlie
I mentioned Miles Garrett. He's been kind of quiet for
a couple of weeks, but obviously one of the best
defensive players in football. Do you think what and Garrett
see this game as a as a rivalry game even
though they're not on the field at the same time.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
No, they absolutely do. They're paying attention as a race
to what one is doing. If one gets a sack,
I promise you the other one wants to get a
sack as well, and they want to try to go
out there and be as as disruptive as possible. Right now,
Miles Garrety did miss a practice earlier in the week
with the ankle injury. What does that look like for
him coming into this game? Either way, he's going to
be ready and he's going to want to now really
(05:47):
set him stuff as part because for years has always
been Miles TJ who's the defensive player of the year,
and this is the first time that they ultimately get
to out shine. So who can outshine one another in
their first of two head hit battles.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
Can the Cleveland defense win this game? Because I'm not
sure the Cleveland offense can. We'll talk about that unit
in a couple of minutes, but like I I don't know.
I mean, the Cleveland defense is pretty pretty good, but
the Cleveland offense barely scores.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
Yeah, and that's it. Even though they created the turnovers
last week against Minnesota offensively, they weren't able to capitalize
off of it defensively. Can they win this game? Yeah,
you create turnovers score on that defensive side. That's something
that you know, we don't know how that ultimately isn't
going to impact it. But when you look at I
know we're talking about the Cleveland offense and here shortly,
but that's one of those things that defensively, they have
(06:37):
to give the Browns offense a short field if they
feel that they can compete in this week's game.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
The part what the worries me is you got Garrett
lining up on the left side, you got you got
Malie Collins, who's a stud right next to him.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
You got Mason Graham right next to him.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
No matter how many offensive linemen you use, if you're
the Steelers, that's a trio to contend with, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (06:59):
It is.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
And this going to be something that we you know,
coming into this season, we knew that was going to
be a question mark. They got better as the week
went on, but this is truly going to be their
first test, and there should be no excuse because crowd
noise is not a factor. Aaron's able to use the
snapcount as a weapon, and you're able to use some
shift in motions to kind of keep that defense off balanced.
So if they don't get it going this week, then
(07:21):
truly we don't know what this offense is going to
look like because there is no excuses right now because
you're playing in front of the home crowd.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
What are your impressions that Dylan Gabriel, Cleveland's rookie quarterback.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
I think he's done okay, Yeah, he's.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Done okay, but he's you know, he is a little
bit older, so from a maturation standpoint, that gives him
the advantage. So when you're a twenty five year old
first year player, then yeah, you can now hopefully the
game slows down for him. They were comfortable enough last
week obviously for him to get the start, but there
were some safe passes that were happening. He didn't truly
push the ball down the field. Now that he has
(07:55):
his second start, that's happening here, you want to see
that step one, step two if he's able to do
it here. So that's something that I'm gonna look forward
to seeing to see if he's able to do that.
But again, if they don't get that running game going,
there's no way that the Browns offensive coordinator is going
to turn around and put him in a situation where
they become a past first team against his defense.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
I hope Ramsey can play. He's listed as questionable, Charlie.
He did practice today. I think if you have Ramsey out,
there's the Swiss army knife. You can do kind of
what Lebau used to do and just use different looks
to confuse a rookie quarterback.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Without him, I don't know about that.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Yeah, and This is something that really, you know, Taro
Austin hasn't had the full arsenal really all year because
whenever Joey Porter was out, Now all of a sudden
potential that Jaylen Ramsey could be out and then you'll
see Joey Porter, you'll see Brandon Echols, and again we're
not surely going to see what that whole secondary package
looks like. And that's gonna be something that, you know, really,
can Joey really hold up, because again he's coming back
(08:51):
from hamstring. He looked like he was ready to go,
and we're going to see whether he can continue to
carry on that first corner position as he's taking that
taking hold of whoever the road receiver number one is
for the Brown. So it's going to be something that
to see what they doing about. Because the last thing
that we remember from this defense is the miscommunication that
happened against Minnesota and that was the Peyton Wilson tackle
(09:14):
that happen. They have to clean our communication up. In
last week, they used crowd noise as an excuse. Guess
what you're playing in front of his home crowd. They're
going to be loud, so you better be on the
same accord, making sure they're playing the same defense.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
Absolutely correct.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
I look at Cleveland playing Gabriel and Judkins are running
back too. I look at the New York Giants playing
scatter Boat running back and they go Jackson darts starting
at quarterback. The Steelers kind of stay just as they are.
They don't want to improve, They just want to be
the Steelers. Does that frustrate you at all? Do I
have a point in that regard.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
Saying when you say they want to be the Steelers,
what do you mean?
Speaker 1 (09:49):
Well, they just they just settle for you know, the veterans,
not improving, just not taking a risk to get better,
which these other teams are doing. But to be fair,
they're not as good as the Steelers in the first place.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
Yeah, I think when you look back and to that point,
you know, really the days of building through the draft
over the last several years hasn't happened because they've missed
on their first rounders. And when you miss in that
particular manner, that forces you to change the mindset by
now having to add from free agency. Can they get
better movie before? That remains to be seen. We'll all
(10:21):
figure this thing out together, but it's going to start
with Troy Fontana's gonna start with Roderick Jones and ultimately
Derek Harmon to make sure at least the nucleus of
that front is going to be their most offensively and defensively.
So they're going to have to figure this out. But
right now, the way that they're combiding and putting this
rotter together is all coming from outside, and they have
(10:42):
to be able to build from the draft.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
I agree Charlie that said, I'm pretty impressed with Harmon,
and I think he's made the whole unit on defense,
especially in the trench.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Has made those guys better, don't you.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
Yes, he absolutely did. And this is one of the
reasons why you brought him here because the image that
we had was the one that we had from the
playoff game against the Ravens when they ran for two
hundred ninety nine yards first two weeks in the season.
They know we were getting crushed in the run defense.
Harmon comes back. He was supposed to play minimum in
the Patriots game. He played a lot more than what
was expecting, and of course we saw the full arsenal
(11:14):
against the Vikings. As long as he is healthy, that's
going to allow a Keanu Betten to have a game
like he had against Minnesota. Cam. Yes, we know he's
going to be there. He's the stout guy, veteran guy.
But ultimately these young guy has to be able to
pick up opposite Cam Hayward.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
One thing Kim Benz brought up a little bit ago Charlie,
and it's it's fairly obvious, but nonetheless absolutely correct.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Gabris only five to eleven.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
One thing, the Steelers are really good at his batting
passes done.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
Aren't they? Yeah, they are. And you know a lot
of said when it comes down to short quarterbacks, and
we know, you know, we've been able to get hands
on balls that would you know that would throwing and
batting them down. But when you have success like you
Drew Brees has had out a five to eleven, six foot guy,
Kyler Murray has as a short style at your quarterback
that is working toward Dylan Gabriel's favor only because you
(12:04):
now have things to compare it to. I wouldn't get
on the fact of saying we're going to have so
many bad at balls if you're now in manageable third
down situations, if you can now get them into third
and long third and extra long. Then yes, I can
use that narrative. So they have to be able to
be dominant on first down, to be able to be disruptive,
to allow Dalan Gabriel those third long opportunities.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
The Steelers are three and one, and a lot of
the national media, because of how much the division, the
AFC North has disintegrated, are conceding them winning the division.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
I hope it's that simple, Charlie.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
But what do you think This is where these track
games start to happen. Right the game you're supposed to win,
and all of a sudden you let a couple go down.
Think about a couple of years ago, you know, they
had a chance to really have a number one seed,
and then there was a week that went by where
they lost to the Cardinals, and then on a short
week they lost to the Patriots, and then they went
from like the number one seeds and number five and
(12:57):
you're like, wow, we're supposed to beat those teams. I
just hope that this team is not starting to read
the headlines thinking that they better, they're better than what
they actually are, and start losing games that they're supposed
to win. Let it all go they'll block out the outside.
Control what you can control, regardless of the injuries that
are happening within the division. Just go out there and
win because that's who's on your schedule, and then we
(13:20):
just start talking about what that looks like at the
end of the season.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
Finally, Charlie, here's the subplot for Sunday's game. They traded
Flacco and the coach didn't even know about it, he says,
And Shador is the number two quarterback.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
The owner clearly wants him to play. I think the
owner drafted him.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
As a matter of fact, what would it take for
Shador to get in the game on Sunday at Pittsburgh.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Yeah, that's I think. Really, you're probably four or five
six consecutive series that maybe that Browns offense goes three
and out and then you're looking for a change. And
I just what I saw, even the breaking news of
him than the beam the announced as the number two,
I'm like, wow, was I really breaking news? Because I
really went back to my career. I'm like, was there
ever breaking news when I was in the backup to
(14:02):
Ben Roethlisberger? Like, no, it didn't happen, But either way,
we're here. But he's one snopple, one play away from
going into the game. Do they have a package for him? Possibly,
but either way you got to prepare for him. But
this team knows what yourdor's strength and weaknesses are because
they were evaluate him, valuating him heavily into draft in April.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
Charlie, you're a Homestead guy.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
I respect that everything you did was breaking news on
this program.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
Well, I appreciate it. Mark. You gotta come over to
the foundation, buddy. Hey, we just went from fifty three
hundred square feet to thirty three thousand square feet, so
we're eager to show it off. So when you get
a break, you get to come over and check it
out and see the kids in action.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
You know I will. I'll gladly serve the best of
the Batch Foundation. Just say when Charlie, great stuff, great insight.
We'll talk again soon. Enjoy the game.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
Yeah, I appreciate it. Thanks for having me.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
That's Charlie Batch. Don't forget.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
Check him out on the post game show on DVE
after the Bronze and Steelers on Sunday. Always great to
talk to Charlie at the bottom of the hour. It's
not always great to talk mister Friday afternoon.
Speaker 6 (15:03):
From the one five nine the X Traffic Center.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
This report is sponsored I'd love to get the balls.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
Very good point the ex at one nine.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
We've been talking a lot of Steelers and bronze. Thanks
to Tim Bens and Charlie Batch for joining me so far.
On today's program. We also talked a lot of hockey.
We got the New York Rangers visiting PPG Paint Arena
tomorrow night, the comeback game for Sully after the Penguins
beat him and the Rangers on Tuesday at the Garden.
The Rangers did bounce back to win four IL at
(15:40):
Buffalo last night, so Buffalo sucks again, but I I'm
not sure the Rangers are going to be very much better. Yeah,
we come up with some storylines for the Steelers. It
took a little digging. But does the offense have an identity?
I would say no, except real big, real conservative and
not an offense that's going to come from me behind
(16:00):
or beat a good team in a big game. Is
this game a Tomlin special? The loss that shouldn't be
which we see all too often, and it seems like he's.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Due for one of them?
Speaker 1 (16:13):
Wat versus Garrett? Do they see it as a rivalry.
I think they do. Who's going to get to win,
who's going to get the stats? And what would each
rather have if you gave them truth serum the win
or the stats.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
I really do wonder.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
We've been talking about a lot of Steeler fans on Twitter,
a lot of media stooges as well, saying the steelershould
have drafted Scatabo after his big game last night for
the New York Football Giants, scoring three touchdowns while they
killed the Philadelphia Eagles, defending Super Bowl champions. I don't
think they should have drafted Scattabo. Scatabo won the fourth round.
(16:51):
They got Caleb Johnson in the third round. They should
be given Caleb Johnson the ball. And I know a
lot of you think, well, the Steelers don't think he's
good enough. It takes a long time to learn that offense,
horse manure. That offense is dumber than ever with seven
offensive linemen. How much do you have to know to
run the ball behind seven offensive linemen? They just would
(17:15):
rather give the ball and the snaps and the starting
job to a couple of backups rather than give their
third round pick. Who's a power back, who's a better
fit for this offense than either Gainwell or Warren. They
just don't want to play rookies because worldless Steelers, and
that's how we do things.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
Here's how the Steelers do things.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
They don't want a playoff game in eight years, well
going on eight. That's how they do things. So don't
sit there like a door and say they should have
drafted Scattabow.
Speaker 2 (17:42):
I know, don the dial. That's all they're saying.
Speaker 1 (17:44):
They're not looking at the actual situation, which is they
should be playing Caleb Johnson. And if you want to
cite that that kickoff faux pa he made that lost
the game to Seattle. That's got nothing to do with
him playing running back. He never returned kickoffs at Iowa
in college. It's got nothing to do with the other.
(18:04):
So again, this team is three and one, it's gonna
be four and one, gonna be five to one, it
could be seventeen in one.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
I don't think they have any idea.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
What they're doing in terms of coaching, personnel management, nothing.
I think they're idiots. I look at teams like the
Brons and Giants using rookies improving. I use the Penguins
as a comparison, and the Steelers are just content to
have the same team in Week eighteen, they have now
only older, tireder.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
And more beat up. And I'm right about this.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
You can bitch about me, you're fat, you don't like
the Steelers. Both are true, really, but I'm right about this,
and we'll be proven right about this, just like I
have been proven right.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
About stuff like this in perpetuity.
Speaker 1 (18:53):

Oh good, oh what did you do that?

Ouch?
Speaker 2 (22:03):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (22:04):
I I wow, stop that.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
That's kind of weird.
Speaker 1 (22:09):
It must have been like a default setting based on
the contract. We that that wasn't meant to happen. But
I'll I'll clear it up by next week. It seems
to me be a technical difficulty.
Speaker 5 (22:19):
That's okay, I't just talk.
Speaker 4 (22:20):
I'll just h bring it up with legal.
Speaker 2 (22:23):
Well, No, I talked to HR. They said, they said
it's okay.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
Now.
Speaker 4 (22:26):
Oh, no, I want to I want to HR. I'm
talking to legal. No.
Speaker 1 (22:29):
I talked to them as well. They also said it's
it's okay. Now, Let's get to the picks. First off,
the Steelers pick. Steelers favored by six at home against Cleveland.
Is this a typical Mike Tomlin trap game? Because it
seems kind of like one of those is do doesn't it? Well?
Speaker 4 (22:48):
It's got like every good trend and the Steelers working
on it does Cleveland is one of the worst, uh
travel spots you could ever be. And they flew overseas,
they flew back home. They're on a short week. They
gotta go back on the road to Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh's
had a week off. Not to mention Tomlin's success against
rookie quarterbacks. However, I just still can't get over the
(23:13):
fact that the Steelers, as favorites, you know, usually have
trouble covering the number because they're playing defensive style and
it wasn't being clean like eighteen straight times.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
I don't think that, you know, yeah, you're supposed to
know that.
Speaker 4 (23:29):
I mean it his own Cleveland, they got a rookie quarterback.
Thomin's great against rookie quarterbacks. However, I think Vegas has
just made this line like a little bit too high.
I think this is gonna win the game. But I
mean I can clearly, I think as well as anybody
can see like a sixteen to thirteen field goal battle,
(23:50):
you know, against the best defense in the league and
plus two there. Do you know that Aaron Jones that
his age does not want to be mauled by Miles Garrett,
So I'm expecting them very Uh well, by the way,
Miles Garrett owns t J.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
Watty just saying that, you're just saying that because you
hate the Steelers, Uh.
Speaker 4 (24:11):
No, that's not sure. He's just he's just he's just
a far better defensive player of the TG wat he
owns he's CG watch dad. So, Uh, I think they're
still gonna be scared.
Speaker 3 (24:21):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
Okay, for some reason, mister Friday Afton's phone say that again,
your phone was fading you.
Speaker 2 (24:31):
You need to get a better FO. You need to
be more professional.
Speaker 4 (24:35):
Well, I can't help them with the satellite situation, with
the WiFi the I just think it's too many points.
Just say Cleveland the points Textsford to win the game,
Cleveland cover.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
Now, I don't think Aaron Rodgers is in danger.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
The Steelers have been using seven offensive linemen, including an
extra tackle and a monster tight end. It's kind of
a prehistoric approach, isn't it.
Speaker 4 (24:57):
Uh? Did they have eight offensive linem because they're probably
gonna meet another one against like Cleveland defensive front.
Speaker 1 (25:02):
Okay, so take Cleveland plus six. Let's go out of
your pick of the week.
Speaker 4 (25:09):
Uh, let's go with the Vegas Raiders of the Bounty.
You know, Pete Carroll is like twelve and three in
his career on three straight losses. They got embarrassed. Last week.
Tennessee had the luckiest when I'm sure you talked about
on your show, like every every survivor Pool the Bills
and the Arizona and Arizonians a joke. They were getting
(25:30):
killed again. They were able to go down twenty eight
to six, and some miracle happened that came back. So
whatez on.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
The air with that huge nose, ears, what the hell
was going on?
Speaker 4 (25:43):
That electric shock that you gave me disrupted my service
that it makes me sick. So it's like, this is
all your your this is your fault. Okay, okay, okay,
so yeah, so let's take uh, let's take Vegas. All right,
I must win situation. I get the Tennessee team and
play their second game. Well, they got lucky last week.
(26:03):
I live for Vegas to comfortably witness game as long
as they're gonna run the ball a lot because Geno
since got nine interceptions and says that's like from our
conservative game planning, and they're the better team.
Speaker 2 (26:12):
So Vegas minus three and a half.
Speaker 4 (26:15):
Correct?
Speaker 2 (26:16):
Okay, And now it's time for the daily double. I
don't know what, let me ask you this. I get
excited for the daily doubles. Still don't.
Speaker 4 (26:29):
Oh yeah, well, the daily double is one of my
favorite kids the week.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
Okay, laying on us, We're gonna go.
Speaker 4 (26:37):
Back to the wall with Green Bay plus lawyer with
excuse me, with Cincinnati plus fourteen a half, I expect them.
They've been They've been lost by double digits three weeks
in a row. They actually have some good players on
this team. They got a new quarterback and Jake Brown
into his interceptions left and right. I they should keep
it close within three scores, were gonna Green Mays. God, No,
(27:02):
no reason to get marged in this game. You know
they got they got a stretch coming up of some
tough games.
Speaker 3 (27:08):
Look at them.
Speaker 4 (27:08):
They get ahead Coast and Placo to get him in
the back door at the end. Or maybe they keep
it close. You might be they may want to keep
them to a one score game the whole time. So
that's just so many points in the NFL when you
got Jamark Chase and see Higgins, and you know fourteen
and a half is too much.
Speaker 1 (27:25):
Take green Bay plus fourteen and a half and that
is the daily double. Excuse me, take Cincy plus fourteen
and a half. Green Bay plus fourteen and a half
would would be a lock, obviously, right.
Speaker 4 (27:37):
So correct, since Cynty plus fourteen and a half is
the daily double.
Speaker 2 (27:42):
Okay, now you have zero doubts.
Speaker 4 (27:47):
Well, it depends on what the super colliders.
Speaker 2 (27:55):
Well, the super Collider I've thought about.
Speaker 1 (27:57):
This is a great deal because, as you know, the
super Collider is my baby, and I think it's the
most important pick of the week. So I'm going to
make the Steeler game the super Collider.
Speaker 4 (28:10):
Well, go figure, I mean you, I mean, why don't
you know? Why would you not want to make the
super Collider. You'll put it on top of the Daily Double.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
I'm trying to spare you embarrassment. That would be extra losses.
Speaker 4 (28:24):
Yeah, but I mean I told you I have zero
doubt about the Daily Doubt.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
I have zero dot about the super Collider.
Speaker 4 (28:36):
Between from between the super Collider and the Daily Double, I.
Speaker 2 (28:41):
Have zero doubt.
Speaker 1 (28:44):
Well, I like you, I have zero doubt about the
super Collider, but I do have doubts about the Daily Double.
Speaker 4 (28:56):
Although we'll just have to see how it plays out there.
Speaker 2 (28:59):
We really will. Would you like to talk to your fans?
Speaker 4 (29:02):
Absolutely?
Speaker 1 (29:03):
Okay, if you like to talk to mister Friday afternoon,
call now eight three three four one two ninety nine
thirty nine. And that's eight three three four one two
ninety nine thirty nine. Seriously, getting back to what I said,
you said it was under my business, but it is
my business. This is my radio program. Why do you
think you're you're picking? It's like every year you have
good streaks and bad streaks. What is depriving you of consistency?
Speaker 4 (29:27):
Well, I'm not going to reveal my trade secrets.
Speaker 3 (29:29):
Well because I.
Speaker 1 (29:31):
Don't think you should have a problem with revealing your
trade secrets when you're ten and fifteen.
Speaker 4 (29:36):
Okay, Well all right, So I started a new strategy
this year, and what I've been doing is I've been
putting all the picks in a hat and for this
show I had picked, I draw the names out of
the hat and that's my picks.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
Yeah. That that's just like contradictory to everything being an
experture to entail.
Speaker 2 (29:56):
You're making it absolutely random.
Speaker 4 (30:00):
Yeah, but sometimes the randomness, uh, the kid comes clarity.
So what could happen is is like I could I
could go three and know this week I could win
the Super Collider, I can win the Daily Double. You know,
I had the domains, the teams I picked out of
the hat had a lot of good stuff backing it up.
(30:21):
So I also have zeroed out.
Speaker 2 (30:23):
Let me ask you, this is it a pirates hat?
Speaker 5 (30:27):
Is excuse me?
Speaker 3 (30:28):
Do you hire no?
Speaker 5 (30:30):
Who?
Speaker 4 (30:30):
Who would?
Speaker 3 (30:30):
Who would?
Speaker 4 (30:31):
Out a pirates hat?
Speaker 2 (30:33):
That's mister Friday afternoon.
Speaker 1 (30:36):
The picks once again, take Since, Take up Green Bay,
Take Cincinnati plus the points, Take Cleveland plus the points.
What's the other freaking pick? Take Vegas, giving giving the points.

Yeah, what you said the ex at one oh five nine.
Now it's time to ask Mark anything now eight three
three four one two ninety nine thirty nine. That's A
three three four one two ninety nine thirty nine. Or
(32:38):
you can still leave a talk back via the iHeart
Media app. Just click on the microphone icon. But the
number to call is A three three four one two
w XDX. Did I even give the number out the
dan last segment, I'm clearly you know, losing memory, going
(33:00):
a little milky in the Philbert Dementia's amility. However you
want to phrase it, and I can make fun of
it because I'm getting it. Maybe hope not. But that's
the number to call. Eight three three four one, two
thirty nine. Let's go to Newman.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
Hello, Newman, Hello, Jerry.
Speaker 5 (33:21):
I have two questions, If that's all right, go ahead.
So first question, so I know you and your mom
had ten season tickets back in the day. I was
wondering what section.
Speaker 3 (33:30):
You were in.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
Oh, I can answer that easily.
Speaker 1 (33:33):
We were in section D twenty seven, Row A, seats
five and six.
Speaker 5 (33:40):
That's crazy because that's actually the section where I sat
in my first game. But uh yeah, my tickets were
typically up F two could literally touch the ceiling the
building was.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
Yeah, yeah, I uh anyways, I uh know.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
I the last game they played in that playoff lost
de Montrell in twenty ten, the last game in the
Civic Arena. I actually the crowd was clear enough, so
I actually went and sat the last five minutes in
those old seats.
Speaker 5 (34:06):
Oh wow, that's great.
Speaker 2 (34:07):
Yeah, it really was. It was.
Speaker 4 (34:09):
It was.
Speaker 2 (34:11):
Sad but great.
Speaker 5 (34:12):
Yeah right, all right. So second question, so it pertains
to the Flyers. So it's always fun watching them lose,
perhaps even more fun watching them lose than even watching
depends when. But I'm wondering whether you'll be rooting for
them to lose a bit less this season so they
don't end up winning big in the draft.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
Well that's my big scares that they get Gavin McKenna.
That really does frighten me because I think they're bad
enough to finish low enough to get a bunch of
balls in the lottery and get that pick. So but
as always, I want the peng Was to finish ahead
of the Flyers. That's how I want the pen Was,
then more balls in the lottery. In so many ways
this season now, especially Newman, compounded by the two and
(34:53):
Oho start, it really is a cat's twenty two for
the Penguins, isn't it.
Speaker 5 (34:58):
Yeah, I mean I feel like it's are the situations
where in the moment we got a root for the Pens,
but whenever we probably inevitably end up being a losing team,
it at least gives us some solace in the end.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
Wait, in the moment, yeah, it's like last night with
Mario there and and Sid and Gino having good games
and Tanger you know, in the scene in the dressing
room afterwards with the big boy there. It was such
a great night. So yeah, I can't ben happy about
them winning. And I think the people like the usual suspects,
and I hate it.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
Newman.
Speaker 1 (35:32):
You go down the dial except for the afternoon show
Starkey and Pompiani, none of them mfors give a frig
about hockey. They talk about it when it's you know, obligatory,
well perceived anyway, when there's nothing else to talk about,
they do the absolute minimal, and they're bitching on Twitter
and bitching on their shows about how well two points
away from Gavin mckvin McKenna, here's an idea.
Speaker 2 (35:54):
Don't freaking talk about it at all. You don't care,
don't pay attention.
Speaker 3 (35:58):
F off.
Speaker 5 (36:02):
I agreed.
Speaker 1 (36:02):
I thank you, Newman, I said, good day, Las Line
open at eight three three four, one thirty nine.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (36:10):
I mean, hey, anybody with the microphone could say whatever
he or she wants, no doubt about that. But if
you don't care, I'm gonna know you don't care. And honestly,
the same probably applies to me a bit with the Steelers.
Speaker 2 (36:26):
I don't care.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
I have no emotional attachment, but I I think I'm merciless.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
In my analysis, So there you go. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (36:33):
Maybe I'm just as bad. I don't care. If I'm
just as bad, I'm just as bad.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
Effort.
Speaker 1 (36:38):
By the way, always great seeing seeing other media members
that I like. There aren't that many of those. But
at the Penguin game last night, so Shelby causey who
uh is.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
A Channel eleven now?
Speaker 1 (36:51):
I think after the fan didn't use her nearly as
much as they should have, so it was great to
run into Shelby.
Speaker 2 (36:59):
Let's go to a talkback.
Speaker 3 (37:01):
Hey, Mark, if you were Mike Tomlin, who are you
starting at running back?
Speaker 1 (37:08):
If I were Mike tom When, I would have opened
the season splitting Caleb Johnson and Jalen Warren as the
starting running back and using Kenneth Gainwell as the third domback,
And the idea would have been to work eventually to
having Caleb Johnson as the first and second down back
once he gets a little better pass protection maybe and
(37:28):
and you know, facing Jaylen Warren out period because I
think he's a scrub. I think he's a scrub. I
don't think he's done much to prove to anybody he's
not a scrub. I would have been working toward Caleb
Johnson being the starter and Kenneth Gainwell being the third domback.
I look at at scatter Bow, people making a big
(37:49):
fuss about him doing well with the Giants last night,
and and you know, I mean, maybe he's not great
to pass protect either, but maybe they decided to take
a chance to let him learn on the fly and
just do what he can do, which is ball people
over running the ball. I just I don't understand the Steelers' trepidation.
(38:11):
And it's constant to not use young guys, and people
cite exceptions many times, but they are exceptions. If there's
somebody else to play instead of a rookie, they play
to somebody else. And you look at Dan Morehowe using
him just ruin Broderick Jones by moving Jones to right tackle,
just confusing him, making him a swing tackle, breaking his confidence.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
And they did that for Dan Moore, who sucks.
Speaker 1 (38:37):
And if when they drafted Broderick Jones they figured out
pretty quickly that he wasn't good enough and they should
play Dan Moore left tackle, then shame on them for
their their scouting and drafting in taking Broderick Jones.
Speaker 2 (38:50):
Again, I say, I know.
Speaker 1 (38:52):
The Steelers are three and one, and everybody says yeahoo,
they're gonna win the division. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
Yahoo.
Speaker 1 (38:57):
I don't think they had the Vegas clue of what
they're doing. I think they're coaching, they're personnel, they're scouting.
I think the most knowledgeable guy in that organization is
Andy Weinel, and they don't give him nearly enough pull.
So well, whatever, whatever I mean, you guys believe what
you want. At the end of the season, it turns
(39:18):
out that I am just about always right.
