Stealers host Miami Monday Night Football. It's time to talk
to former Steeler quarterback Charlie Batch. Charlie, here's a question
I've been kicking around all day. Has bringing in Aaron
Rodgers been worth it? Would it be any different or
worse with Rudolph? And even if it would be, even
if it would be worse, is seven and six good enough?

I think they made the right move with Rogers. I think,
you know, he brings this ability there and they're looking for,
you know, that proven guy. And as much as you
know we like Mason Rudolph, I'm a big fan of his.
Is the way that the Steelers have made moves in
the past didn't necessarily give me the confidence that they
were going to move forward with him, even with Aaron
not on that roster. So with him being here is
exactly where the Steelers are hoping that they would be playing,

meeting for football in December, and here we are.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Did you think Rogers might play a little better? I mean,
the numbers ain't been great for me.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
It's just the fact that I didn't necessarily think they
had a lot of strength in the wide receiver group,
and that was something that they were hoping that these
young players developed, and they were counting a lot on
and Wilson because you know this last year, majority of
last season. Then he comes in this year and they're
really hoping spending a draft pick on him, that he
was going to develop in that manner, and that slowed
and ultimately you're seeing what we're seeing now by the

addition to Adam Thieling and you know MVS and they're
trying to now get things going in the passing game.
And right now with that Broman Wilson a healthy scratch,
it doesn't look like he's a part of that plan
right now.

Let's stay with Theeland and MBS getting snaps. Give me
the pros and cons of that.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
What do you like? What don't you?
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Yeah? I think just for a feeling, I think you
have the veteran experience in there. Are we you know,
going to get the player was over ten years ago? No,
absolutely not, but I think more or less the mindset
and that veteran presence that you need in that group.
I just wish he would have been here sooner rather
than later. But you're starting to see that kind of
develop a mature mature over the last couple of weeks
that he's been here, but MVS, I don't know. I

don't know what they're waiting on because he's been here
the longest and he literally only got on the field
last week. So I think there's something brewing behind the scenes.
I'm not necessarily sure what it is, but for us
not to see him as early, you know, we're just
trying to still figure that thing out. But I think
ultimately both of these guys should have fresh lags and
hopefully continue to contribute in the manner that we saw

last week. Even though NBS didn't have a lot of stats.
It's the fact that maybe they can continue this week
more than they did last.

Charlie, describe for me what you think the Steelers' identity
is on each side of the ball.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Well, right now, I don't think they have one on either,
to be honest with you, and I think that they
go week to week like we hear and talk about
all the time. I think moving forward on the offensive
side of the ball, they're going to have to continue
to spread the ball out of the manner like they
did against the Ravens and let Aaron you know, do
his thing at the line of scrimmage. And get you
into those particular plays that you know he's good at.

So I think that's going to be a formula moving forward. Defensively,
I don't necessarily know where we go with the run
game at this particular point, So I think, if anything,
you're going to maybe try to get after the quarterback
and play that bend that break mentality, and play better
red zone football.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
What's the game playing defensively against Miami Because they're running
the ball very well with the A train and you
know they got depth at running back too, But the
Steelers have done well against the run, not lately but
earlier this season. And boy, if you could just make
two a half to win the game, that might favor
the Steelers, right.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Oh yeah, that's that would be the game plan if
I'm coming in with the if I'm the Steeler defensive coordinator,
I'm like, listen, I'm gonna take this running game away
and make two a beat us down the field in
the passing game. But I don't necessarily think that that's
going to be the case. And you know, right now,
for the last couple of weeks back to back over
two hundred yards rushing. Now you know TJ. Watt out
of this particular game. They were giving up two hundred
yards with him in the game, let alone now not
(03:39):
being there. So I think this is going to be
a bigger issue as we kind of play this thing out,
only because it now weakends you're outside linebacker group, because
you have four solid players, now you're down to three.
You just hope that injury don't occur. And I'm never
gonna wish injury on anybody, But what does that look
like and how does it impact the special team games
those guys are playing a little bit more.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Let's stay with two just for a second. Trolie, you're
the quarterback. I thought it'd be better than this, And
I know injuries have really you know, heard him, but
but what's gone wrong for him otherwise?
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Yeah, you know, when you're kind of you know, you're
in that area and in some of the things, a
little short stature, a little bit some of the blisses
that you're seeing, you'd want to get him off of
his mark and get him on the move. And it
doesn't look like he's comfortable in that pocket. So I
think that's going to be a formulat that the Steelers
try to use in that particular manner. But you know,
when it comes down and when they get that running
game going, he's really good in the play action game.

So I think this is going to be something that
you know, how does he play you know with the weather?
What does that indicate? Because I know before he talked
about not wanting to play in cold weather, So hopefully
mentally he's thinking about the weather and what's going to
happen on Monday, and hopefully that impacts him. But yes,
I hopefully expect the Steelers to make it one dimension
unfortunate to beat him with the past you.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Mentioned the weather, is that overrated? Underrated?
Speaker 1 (04:53):
I mean, Miami's a warm weather team, to be sure,
they play in Florida, but all those guys have played
in cold weather through out their careers.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Yeah, they do. And I think, you know, it becomes
more of a narrative because we make it that way.
But the players, you know, nobody will Nobody truly wants
to play in the cold weather, even if you are
up north. So that's one thing that you don't want
to do. But I think ultimately it gives you know,
you think that it gives you a mental advantage because
they have to think about all week leaving Sunny Florida
and then coming up there having to pack all the

layers of close and figuring out how they're going to
prepare in this particular game. They're in the AFC East,
they play in Buffalo, they're playing it, yet they know
how to prepare for the cold weather. So I think
it's more of our story than it is anything else.

a little excited about herbig playing more.

Yeah, I mean, we all wanted to see him on
the Fulfilled, especially with the production that he's been able
to produce throughout the course of this season. So now
this is going to be a huge opportunity for him
because he now gets the showcase in front of a
national audience that he can actually be a regular starter.
So this is a bigger game for him maybe than
other people. But I think ultimately when you look at
just Hassmith and herbick out there now Jack Sawyer now
(06:26):
being part of that rotation, you know, what does that
look like? Movie before could but herbig Ann Sawyer plays
a lot of special teams. So this is going to
be something that I'm paying attention to. But I think
ultimately herbig I'm not worried about him. This guy can
go out there and play. I'm a big fan of
his and Alex Hasmith just have to go out there
and dominate. Now it's just a matter of which person
that the Dolphins identified by double teaming more than the other,

and we'll see how that plays out as the game
goes on.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
I would think it would be high Smith, and I'm
a big fan of the season.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
He's having Charlie up. His only enemy's been injury.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
But I think really when he's healthy, he's had more
great games on defense than any other play on that
side of the ball.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Yeah, he absolutely has, and I'm a huge fan of
his and this guy just linging or injuries that has
occurred and those are the things that you know, really
has kept him from potentially being that Pro Bowl player
that we're all hoping that he can be. So he
as long as he's healthy, there's not an issue that way.
But to your point, yeah, I think the Steelers are.
I mean, the Dolphins are gonna run away from Hatsmith
because there's a lot better in the run game, So

expect a lot more activity.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
To herbic side, What do we make of the Minka
trade now? Because Mink is in Miami, He's done, you know,
pretty good. He's not going to make first team All
Pro like he did a couple times here in Pittsburgh.
But who got the better of that trade? Now that
we have the games this season to look.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Back at, I honestly think it's a tie because you know,
when you look back, or maybe the Dolphins got a
better deal only because the Steelers that the Dolphins traded
away two players and now John news Smith isn't playing.
You look at you know, when you look at where
Ramsey is at, you initially wanted him as a shutdown corner,
but now he's back at safety in the same position
that Mika Sistaster would have been at. So you know again.

But again, if you flip the flips out of the Dolphins,
they're playing Minca in the nickel where Jalen Ramsey played at.
So I just think it's even tie when you look
out all of these things play out, and I think
there's a lot more at stake for Minca that it
is Jalen, only because Mika wants to say, hey, you
let me go, and any kind of team typically gives
up on you in the manner that is it's a
more motivated game for you. So I think this game

is going to be something that Mienca definitely had on
this calendar circle, and he's going to want to do
it more because it's in Pittsburgh, so they're going to
try to They need to figure out a way to
neutralize him because he's still a talented player.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
In that vein Charlie, I sometimes wonder what the Steelers
about the communication between the GM and the coaches, because
you traded for John Hu and he barely plays. He
was thought to be the difference maker in that deal,
and you pay Moods and he's not in there much either.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
Right, A lot of these questions that we're trying to
figure out because you're thinking, Okay, you're going to see
continue to see more fire Mooth than Smith, and that
just has the materialized and nobody had on their bingo
card that Darnel Washington was going to play more than
those guys in that tight end group. So again, but
you have to credit Washington for doing his part and
being ready to play. So I think this is something

that is we continue to move forward. As the weather
starts to turn, You're hoping that we're going to see
more Smith because Smiths should be in Arthur Smith's head
all or in his offense all week, saying you know,
this game matters to me. I want to play against
the Dolphins. So maybe he's included in the game. Play
a little bit more this week.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
Yeah, I would like to see it. How big does
this game feel to you, Charlie. It's not a division game.
You beat Baltimore, you're on top of the AFC North,
and even if it would lose, I mean, you're still
right in the thick of it, but it would feel
like it's back to square one. The Steelers haven't won
two in a row for a couple of months, and
I just feel like they got to win this one.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
Yeah, I'm with you on that. I mean, when you
get to this point of the season, you have to
start stacking wins, and right now that that hasn't happened,
and when one lose one and you're essentially you know,
one game above five hundred. So these are things that
you know, you start to be concerning. And I think
this is something that for me, I get a little
concerned about only because you come off of a big game.
Now you're preparing in this game. Is it a potential
(10:08):
drop off because you're like, we don't necessarily needed to
win this game. Maybe we could lose it and still
get away with it because we beat Baltimore at the end,
you still win. No, we want to see that domination
because we want to see you get us fans excited
about what's potential possibly going to happen if you eventually
get into the playoffs. So I think this team has
to figure out a way to get this particular win
(10:29):
because you know what's coming down the pipeline because on
a short week next week they're playing the tough Detroit
team in Detroit, So this game they have to.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
Have Charlie, would you do anything different the Steelers to
run the ball better or is it just lack of
commitment to the run.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
Well, I think it's a little bit of lack of
commitment there. But I think ultimately they have to get
off to a faster start and try to establish that
running game. I'm just hoping that they get because they're
playing in front of the home fans, crowd noise shouldn't
be a fact that they should be able to get
off on the same accord. But again, I can now
Isaac say Amalu help out whoever is going to start
at that left tackle position, because they Saamalu has been

solid and that's where Rogerick Jones saw the development week
after week. So that's a position right there that we
have to pay attention to and ultimately that he helps
contribute into that running game.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
I'm glad you brought up Siamalu because he deserves to
be talked about. They're down to their four string left tackle,
and honestly, I think all their left tackles this year
have looked okay because of Siamalu.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Plan the next one absolutely of the offensive line there.
I know the center typically is, but he's the veteran
of that group and the more that he plays, and
the better he plays each and every game, Guess what,
Now the other guys have to rise to the equation.
So I think everything that Isaac has been doing up
until this point has been phenomenal, and really, when you
look at just the offensive side of the ball, he

probably is the only person that probably can scratch and
maybe sniff a little bit of Pro Bowl consideration.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
What would you do differently on the defensive side of
the ball to stop the run? We both agree that's
paramount is running. They should do different I.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
Don't necessarily know that thing, don't for me. I would
just like to see a little bit more twisting fund
It's give me some run gain stunts that are in
there to maybe take away some of those things, because
when you become stagnant and the defense knows where you're at,
it's a lot easier to create those running lanes. So
this is going to be a game that's going to
be extremely important for actors or fans and these Steeler
fans that are going to be in the stadium here
this weekend to be loud, to try to make it disruptive,

to get that offensive line of the Dolphins to get
off on a split second slower snap countenance they can do,
so maybe the advantage goes to the defensive side of
the ball. So this is going to be a critical
game for those fans to continue to stay in. But
it's also important for the Steelers to give the fans
something that you're about too.

Here's an amazing stat and I know you've talked about it.
The Steelers haven't lost at home in twenty two straight
Monday night football games. That's almost hard to believe. I
saw that on Twitter. I went to two different places
on the internet to look it up and make sure
that was right. Like I said, it feels impossible.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
I got scratched my head too. It's like, what are
you right about that? But again, it's a game that
you know, it takes a little bit more precedence over
anything else because your peers are watching and everybody around
the country are watching you in this particular time slot,
and you want to go out there and put on
your best performance. And I've played five seasons with Kawer,
I played six with Tomlin, and it was a heavy
emphasis on these national games. But that's the one thing

about playing in Pittsburgh, and if you are a fan,
You're going to be miserable five times a year because
you know they're going to be playing on time time,
and one of those typically are on Monday. And guess what,
All Tuesday, Pittsburgh fans are on fumes as you're trying
to go to work. So this is a game that's
important and everybody takes it with the you know, with
a lot more grain of salt.

I don't necessarily know where we go with the run
game at this particular point, So I think, if anything,
you're going to maybe try to get after the quarterback
and play that bend that break mentality, and play better

the ball very well with the A train and you
know they got depth at running back too, But the

ultimately herbig I'm not worried about him. This guy can

his and Alex Hasmith just have to go out there
and dominate. Now it's just a matter of which person
that the Dolphins identified by double teaming more than the other,

trade now? Because Mink is in Miami, He's done, you know,
pretty good. He's not going to make first team All
Pro like he did a couple times here in Pittsburgh.

Back at, I honestly think it's a tie because you know,
when you look back, or maybe the Dolphins got a
better deal only because the Steelers that the Dolphins traded
away two players and now John news Smith isn't playing.
You look at you know, when you look at where
Ramsey is at, you initially wanted him as a shutdown corner,
but now he's back at safety in the same position
that Mika Sistaster would have been at. So you know again.

But again, if you flip the flips out of the Dolphins,
they're playing Minca in the nickel where Jalen Ramsey played at.
So I just think it's even tie when you look
out all of these things play out, and I think
there's a lot more at stake for Minca that it
is Jalen, only because Mika wants to say, hey, you
let me go, and any kind of team typically gives
up on you in the manner that is it's a
more motivated game for you. So I think this game

is going to be something that Mienca definitely had on
this calendar circle, and he's going to want to do
it more because it's in Pittsburgh, so they're going to

neutralize him because he's still a talented player.

about the communication between the GM and the coaches, because
you traded for John Hu and he barely plays. He
was thought to be the difference maker in that deal,
and you pay Moods and he's not in there much either.

figure out because you're thinking, Okay, you're going to see
continue to see more fire Mooth than Smith, and that
just has the materialized and nobody had on their bingo
card that Darnel Washington was going to play more than

you have to credit Washington for doing his part and
being ready to play. So I think this is something

that is we continue to move forward. As the weather
starts to turn, You're hoping that we're going to see
more Smith because Smiths should be in Arthur Smith's head
all or in his offense all week, saying you know,
this game matters to me. I want to play against
the Dolphins. So maybe he's included in the game. Play

Yeah, I would like to see it. How big does
this game feel to you, Charlie. It's not a division game.
You beat Baltimore, you're on top of the AFC North,
and even if it would lose, I mean, you're still
right in the thick of it, but it would feel

I just feel like they got to win this one.

get to this point of the season, you have to
start stacking wins, and right now that that hasn't happened,

this is something that for me, I get a little
concerned about only because you come off of a big game.
Now you're preparing in this game. Is it a potential

drop off because you're like, we don't necessarily needed to
win this game. Maybe we could lose it and still
get away with it because we beat Baltimore at the end,
you still win. No, we want to see that domination
because we want to see you get us fans excited
about what's potential possibly going to happen if you eventually
get into the playoffs. So I think this team has
to figure out a way to get this particular win

because you know what's coming down the pipeline because on
a short week next week they're playing the tough Detroit
team in Detroit, So this game they have to.

run the ball better or is it just lack of

Well, I think it's a little bit of lack of
commitment there. But I think ultimately they have to get
off to a faster start and try to establish that
running game. I'm just hoping that they get because they're
playing in front of the home fans, crowd noise shouldn't
be a fact that they should be able to get
off on the same accord. But again, I can now
Isaac say Amalu help out whoever is going to start
at that left tackle position, because they Saamalu has been

solid and that's where Rogerick Jones saw the development week
after week. So that's a position right there that we
have to pay attention to and ultimately that he helps
contribute into that running game.

I'm glad you brought up Siamalu because he deserves to
be talked about. They're down to their four string left tackle,
and honestly, I think all their left tackles this year
have looked okay because of Siamalu.

of that group and the more that he plays, and
the better he plays each and every game, Guess what,
Now the other guys have to rise to the equation.

look at just the offensive side of the ball, he

probably is the only person that probably can scratch and
maybe sniff a little bit of Pro Bowl consideration.

when you become stagnant and the defense knows where you're at,

be extremely important for actors or fans and these Steeler

so maybe the advantage goes to the defensive side of
the ball. So this is going to be a critical
game for those fans to continue to stay in. But
it's also important for the Steelers to give the fans

All Tuesday, Pittsburgh fans are on fumes as you're trying
