Speaker 1 (00:01):
Watch him playoff baseball on the I have a bigger
TV here in my studio than I have at home.
I just got a new TV from Voss Appliance. I'm
gonna get a much bigger one when I get kind
of a break in the action here. But when's that
going to Because I've got dismantle. I still have one
of those old fashioned home entertainment centers, which mandates the

(00:22):
smaller TV. But I want to get one of those
screens that's so big it looks like I'm taking the
throw in on the sideline during the Liverpool game.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
But yeah, watching playoff baseball.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Detroit leads Cleveland one nil in the fourth, third deciding
game of the Wildcard Series. I like watching baseball this
time of year. I've always loved baseball. Seawan Casey said
that to me. Sean Casey said to me once double
m one. I hear you talk about baseball. I can
tell how much you love it, and he's right, I do.

(00:54):
But the Pirates have just ruined it on a local level.
But what's going on now? I mean, so many good stories,
so many related to the Pirates.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Jameson Tyle. We just heard him pitching Game three for
the Cups. David Bedner.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Save for the Yankees last night, keeps their season alive.
Mars Guy, Fat Guy xbuco Guy, I love it, what's
not to love? And then staying local, Mason Miller the
different Bethel Park. He has pitched eight innings in the
relief for San Diego in this postseason and posted eight strikeouts,

(01:37):
eight batters, eight whiffs, and he threw a pitch yesterday
one hundred and four point five miles per hour, and
that is the fastest pitch ever in the MLB postseason
dating back to when they were able to start keeping
that well it probably always could keep it, but they
made it a thing in two thousand and eight. So

(02:01):
there's nothing better than playoff baseball except you know, English
Premier League soccer and playoff hockey.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
And the pen was opener Tuesday, but you get the idea.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
And I mentioned earlier how ironic it is that Cincinnati
better organization than the Pirates, wants to win, prioritize it,
which the Pirates don't much better hands on management for drafting, developing.
They got Terry Francne in the dugout and all they

(02:33):
thought from their trouble was two playoff games where they
got demolished by the Dodgers and out in two days. Now,
that's better what the Pirates are doing. I'm not sure
it's that much better, but their heart's in the right place,
so is their organization. And they had the fun of
the race to make the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
That's really in baseball with the long.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
Season, hundred and sixty two games, that's more fun than
the actual playoffs.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
I think that race. Let's go to Harrison.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Harrison, you're own with double m.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Good day, mister Madden, I said, good day, Mark.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
What do you think the chances are being that Gavin
McKenna plays in Penn State this upcoming season, that he
gets so immersed into the western Pennsylvania culture and that.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
He pulls a cutter Gautier and.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Gets drafted by some bummy team first Overall, one of
the things that concerns me is that we get.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Yeah, that's just let me just cut you off. That's
just not gonna happen. He's not gonna draw a line
from playing at Penn State to wanting to play for
the Penguins.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
That's just not gonna happen. Anything else.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
No, I just figured that, Okay.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
Goodbye, goodbye. It's a stupid thing to say. You're stupid
it And when I ridicule you because your point stupid,
don't then try to repeat the point stupid.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Let's got out of one man who's not stupid.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
He's our good friend, the Hebrew hammer, Hebrew hammer, yuk shamash.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
Yuk shamash mark.

Speaker 5 (04:18):
Hey, thanks for fitting me in. Hey, that guy's vite
that his voice sounded like Mike de Corsi.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
It wasn't Mike the Corsi. It did sound. Now are
you mad because I didn't have you on right away?

Speaker 1 (04:30):
Wow?

Speaker 5 (04:30):
I'm not mad, But hey, you want to do you want.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
To jump in the front of the line, which had
I known that guy was an imbecile, I would have.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
Hey, I appreciate it.

Speaker 5 (04:38):
Hey, do you believe the guy for the U from
Bethel Park in Waynesburg? Do you believe he really threw
the ball one hundred and four miles an hour?

Speaker 2 (04:48):
You know what? I actually thought the same thing.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
I mean, it just seems a figure pucked out of nowhere,
doesn't it. It does.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
I got I got to because they have the technology.

Speaker 6 (05:03):
I mean, the guys were throwing the ball like Chapman
maybe one oh one for like thirty forty years, and
all of a sudden, this guy beats it by three
miles an hour, three and a half months.

Speaker 5 (05:14):
I'm just not buying it. Yeah, I'm not buying it.
I just think it's like MLB just trying to grab
people in. I mean it's silly.

Speaker 7 (05:22):
I mean, he's throwing the ball fast. I mean, any
which way you cut it.

Speaker 5 (05:25):
But I'm not buying one hundred and four.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
So you are coming up with a conspiracy theory involving
Mason Miller supposedly throwing the ball abuck four and a half.

Speaker 5 (05:35):
Absolutely, Hey, and what's.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
One more thing?

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Do you really think that gets people to watch baseball?
Him having thrown that ball that fast, them saying that rather.

Speaker 5 (05:46):
Well, it gets people to talk about it. I mean,
here we are talking about it. If he'd threw one
oh one. I'm not calling your show to say, oh boy,
he threw it at one oh one. I mean, so, yeah,
I can kind of do so.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
I can blame him.

Speaker 5 (06:01):
You can blame him, you can, you can you know
who you can blame Jugs Gunn.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
That's your cue. That's a mush whammy. Let's cut it, Dan,
that was pretty good, Dan, you're on with Mark What
up man? What up man?

Speaker 8 (06:17):
Yeah? I was talking about non contact injuries in the NFL.
I don't know if you saw or talk about this yet,
but great, this year is pretty high compared to other
years already.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
I think that's coincidence. What do you think?

Speaker 8 (06:34):
Well, I thought it either would be coincidence or like
I saw something about the turf fields. I mean I
guess they've always been there.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Uh yeah, how many? How many artificial turf fields are there,
like the rubber type thing?

Speaker 8 (06:48):
Yeah, I think it's like seven or eight.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
Well, I think the NFL should mandate that all fields
your natural grass.

Speaker 8 (06:57):
Oh okay, Tom, just.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Wishing for to my fifteen state had the artificial turf.
I think, well, here's what I would do if I
ran the NFL. And there's no excuse for this not happening,
because because they make billions of dollars, make every stadium
have a roof, Make every state, Tom, have natural grass.
You can do natural grass under a roof. It's been done,

(07:19):
You take it in, you take it out. It's a
great expense. But this is the NFL.

Speaker 8 (07:25):
Yeah, I mean it should be a priority. I don't
know if it is causing injuries. But I guess the
player safety thing they always talk about.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Well, now let's let's hold it, BROV.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
You do realize that the NFL's concern for player safety
goes not at all beyond lip service. They don't care
if these guys live or die. They just don't care
about these injuries. They just they're easily replaced. The brands sells,
the team sells the TV cells. Like the NFL doesn't
need stars. The NFL could put a totally different group

(07:56):
of players out there one week and nobody would even
notice that. That's just how ingrain the NFL is in
American culture.

Speaker 8 (08:05):
Yeah, that's truth. Uh. I don't believe they do anything
for the safety.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
No, and not at all. It's next man up. Thank
you for the call, BROV. Can you get more calls in?
That was actually pretty fun? Well not the first call.
He was an imbecile and we got Jerry Dulac talking
Steelers at the bottom of the hour at one oh
five to nine.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Hates Buddy Diver and I just love good news.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
It's soft and I use a bunch of pillows and
I swore the exit one yep.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
I hate the bye week, especially Thursday the bye week.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
Like I said, tomorrow, we'll get a lot of Penguins
talk going hopefully with the final roster, well the roster
for opening night. I mean, this guy's gonna be going
back and forth between Pittsburgh and Wilkes a lot this year.
That's what happens with rebuilding teams. But I'm curious if
they're gonna, you know, wave Ryan Graves. He's looked off
at camp according to oe Atchari. I think they'll keep him.

(09:08):
I'm sure they will. But does he dress every night?
How many minutes does he get?

Speaker 2 (09:12):
What's his role?

Speaker 1 (09:15):
Music has been using rustin Raquel and the PK fairly often.
I've always thought they should use top six guys in
the PK to have an attacking element. My favorite penalty
kill ever was when Marie Lemue did it for the Penguins,
and he scored thirteen short handed goals in nineteen eighty
eight eighty nine, which is still in a NHL record.

Speaker 2 (09:37):
I was done it with Sinding Gino years ago.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
When Gino first came up, he was considered the best
penalty killer on Russia's national team, the senior team, as
a cheerleader as a teenager, I said cheerleader.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
That's weird that I said that.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
Uh, But just a lot of questions with the Penguins.
Like I said, I don't expect them to come anywhere
near the playoffs, and the or they miss it by
the better, but I expect it to be very interesting
with a lot of.

Speaker 2 (10:07):
Different sidebars and storylines.

Speaker 1 (10:11):
If you only watch a team when it wins, if
that's all that matters to you, you need to get
a life.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
You need to get some loyalty. You need to be
a fan.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
Just supporting a team when it wins and going crazy,
ballistic mad when they don't. That's just not being a fan.
One thing about me. I know how to be a
fan my two teams. I'm unflinchingly loyal to you, Stealer fans.
You can really take a lesson from me in that regard.

(10:45):
Dulex up next next two games man Cleveland at Accrasture
than at Cincinnati, and they don't have Burrow got to
win them. You're five and one, like I said, you're
five and one, and you'll be in first place in
the division by one game and probably two.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
When the Steelers go to Baltimore in December.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
Seventh, you will absolutely be in the driver's seat if
you win these next two games. And for those who
think it's you know, the be all and all to
win a playoff game, your best bet is to win
the division, have a home playoff game, by far your
best bet.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
Anything else will just smack of the same old story. Now.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
We're looking at party Cloudy's Guys tonight, dropping down to
an overnight low of fifty one. Start out with partly
Cloudy's Guys tomorrow, then mostly sunning in the afternoon.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
Can you draw off and happy?

Speaker 1 (12:59):
But they have no real impact in this world, unless,
of course, they're good enough to make the NFL the exit.
One oh five nine Steelers with a bye week, they
host Cleveland one week from Sunday, joining us not to
talk Black and Gold football. He covers the team for
the Post Gazette. It's Jerry Dulac. Jerry uh, You've reported
that Jalen Ramsey's going to be out a couple of weeks.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
How will that shake up that Steeler secondary.

Speaker 9 (13:23):
Well, Mark, I will tell you he will be out
as long as Joey Porter Jr. Was out, so you
can figure it out from there. And I mean it
just it just limits their options because he plays so
many different positions. Now that being said, Mark, you know,
Justin Jefferson had what ten catches the other day and
I know, of course Ramsey was out of the game,

(13:46):
you know, into the fourth quarter, but they never put
Jalen Ramsey on Justin Jefferson and I was surprised one
that they didn't do it. That's why they brought him
in for the Jamar chases and Justin Jefferson's of the
world and then two you know, Jefferson has five catches
in the first quarter, he ends up with ten, and
I was surprised they never put Ramsey on him, you know,

(14:10):
to travel with him the whole game. Now, I'm bringing
that up because obviously they like to deploy him in
different spots throughout the game, and that's what they're going
to miss.

Speaker 7 (14:22):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (14:22):
You know, with Jalen Ramsey being.

Speaker 1 (14:24):
Out of the line, Jalen Warnol's thought for a couple
of weeks can gain well establish himself as the number
one back or does that go to war and when
he returns.

Speaker 9 (14:34):
Yeah, I don't think there's any issue about that. But
I think what you saw, you know, when he was
with the Eagles, Mark, I always liked Kenneth gain Well,
what you know, limited amounts that I saw at him.
I thought he had a quick burst. You know, he's
not a big forty guy. I think he runs like
a four or five, so it's not like he has
blinding speed, but he plays fast and he's elusive, and

(14:56):
he's quick to cut. And you know, that was a
high for him the other day, and so I didn't
the career high in yards. I'm wondering if it was
career high and carries. I never did go to look
and see if that was the case. But I mean,
he was very impressive the other day. And the other
thing the Steelers liked about him since training camp and
you knew he was going to be a big part

(15:18):
of this offense more than just a backup, was that
he's very good out of the backfield.

Speaker 10 (15:23):
And so.

Speaker 9 (15:25):
You know, I think he did himself well to prove
that he needs and to continue to play and he
will continue to fly.

Speaker 1 (15:34):
The weird part about Gainwell and Warren Is they previously
had filled basically the same role, which is third down back,
kind of a change of pace back as well. Caleb
Johnson's more of a first two domes back. And he
got a few carries at DUB one, but not very many.

Speaker 9 (15:49):
Yeah, And but at one point there he carried the
ball four straight plays Mark, And I think that was
important for him and for them. And I think he
got like seven yards and nine yard you know, in
those carries. And I think that was a big step
for him to show one that they if they need
to use him, they will, And two, I think it

(16:11):
was a big step for his big boost for his
confidence after you know, the kickoff gaff and not even
playing in game three. You know, he only had two
snaps in each of the first two games. So I
think it was a big step for them to see
that he can do that. But more importantly, it was
a big step for him. And so yeah, I think, yeah,
he's a one in first and second down back.

Speaker 10 (16:33):
Mark.

Speaker 9 (16:33):
He's not very good in protection, despite the fact that
when he came here he said he wanted to show
him how good he was, and he's not very good
at all.

Speaker 10 (16:40):
But Jalen Warren is the best.

Speaker 9 (16:42):
Of the three in protection on third down, but Kenny
Gainwell is very good out of that backfield.

Speaker 2 (16:47):
By the way, Jerry, you were right on the money.

Speaker 1 (16:49):
Gainwell career high in yards, touchdowns, and carries in the
game at Dublin.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
Is the AFC North falling apart? Mike?

Speaker 1 (16:58):
The Steelers win because somebody got or is Baltimore gonna
get healthy and regroup?

Speaker 9 (17:04):
Well, Baltimore schedules going to ease up too. I mean,
so this is week five, so for of their first
five opponents were twenty twenty four playoff teams. And the
fact that the Chiefs put up thirty seven on them, Mark,
and that's the second time in four games they've allowed
at least thirty seven points. That does not goode well

(17:24):
for their defense. But hey, look the Steelers last year,
you know, we've talked about this before, Mark, they were
ten and three going into December and in first place
against a Bravens team in which Lamar Jackson was having
an MVP season. So yeah, they're off to a slow start.
I'm not going to dismiss them, but you know, you know,

(17:45):
the Steelers are three and one, and they're doing what
they have to do. You know, I thought if they
came through that stretch three and one, day'd be okay. Sure,
four and oh would have been nice. But they're three
and one and they're in a good spot. It's a
long way to go, but they're off to a good
start and they're doing what they have to do to
winning those games well.

Speaker 1 (18:02):
Jerry, I hate to extrapolate results too far down the road,
but I'll go the next two weeks. If the Steelers
beat Cleveland at home and then when at Cincinnati with
out Burrow, I think they'll be in the driver's seat
to win the division for the next month or so.
Certainly when they play at Baltimore December.

Speaker 9 (18:19):
Seventh, Mark, I couldn't agree with you more. I mean,
there's no question about it, because that puts them at
five and one, and that's why this is a good.

Speaker 10 (18:27):
Little stretch for them.

Speaker 9 (18:28):
Now, their schedule gets more difficult later, unlike the Ravens. Now,
the Ravens schedule is going to be a little bit
more difficult because they finished in first place, so they
get all the other division winners as well. But the
Steelers schedule gets harder later, and we saw what happened
last year. I'm not saying the same thing's going to happen,
but hey, look I'm with you, Mark. They get you know,

(18:50):
the next two games set up very well for them,
and Cleveland coming off the buy and then going to
Cincinnati with that Joe Burrow. Yeah, it's you know, the
schedule doesn't get too difficult for them until later and
if they can build themselves a little bit of a
cushion like they did last year though too, Mark, But
if they can do that, then yeah, going into December,

(19:13):
they could be and maybe should be in the driver's.

Speaker 1 (19:15):
Seat, Jerry. I said they'd be in the driver's seat.
I didn't say they would hold on to it indefinitely.

Speaker 10 (19:21):
I know you did, Mark. I noticed your choice of words.

Speaker 1 (19:25):
We're talking to Jerry do like he's brought to us
by bud Light, easy to drink, easy to enjoy, Jerry.
I think Herbig's been a ball of fire? Is he
worthy of more snaps than high Smith? And I saw
Tarrell Austin said, as he has before, that they might
use all three Edge guys at once.

Speaker 9 (19:43):
Yeah, and they thought they've done that a number of times, Marks,
so that that's nothing new. But you know, Herbig's a
different type of player. He's an up the field, go
get the quarterback guy, and but he makes with that
quickness and you know his pass rush moves, he works
very hard on it. You know, he'll dip underneath. You know,
he almost has that like James Harrison move, which James

(20:05):
Harrison showed him that a couple of years ago. He's
so quick off the edge. And high Smith is a
different type of player. High Smith's better against the run,
and he's also a very good you know, he's a
power rusher. So you know, he's you know, uh, you know,
it just depends on what type of packages they want

(20:25):
to use and what the what the situation is. But
I mean her big obviously. Look, that's why they like
the guy, and that's why they give him plenty of
playing time and plenty of opportunities.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
He's kind of a catch twenty two though, isn't he?

Speaker 10 (20:38):
Jair?

Speaker 1 (20:39):
Because I love how he plays, I love his speed,
I love his drive, I love everything about him. But
at his size, the more snaps, the more risk.

Speaker 9 (20:49):
Uh, Mark, You're right about that. But let me because
you brought him up, let me point up something else too,
is that Jack Sawyer has played very well the last
two games, and you've noticed him in the backfield, and
so I bring that up because Jack Sawyer is the

(21:10):
bigger body guy like high Smith, and you have herbig
so quick off the edge. You know, Alex Highsmith one
costs you a lot of money, and two he keeps
getting injured with those soft tissue muscle injuries, and so
you know chances of him being resigned when he's up
with those two guys, which gives you both the big
guy to sixty five to sixty guy like high Smith

(21:33):
and the fast guy off the edge like Herbig. I
don't think you will see the Steelers resign Alex Heismith
only because of what they have, how much they pay him,
in the combination that they have with those two, with
Sawyer and Herbig.

Speaker 1 (21:48):
What wouldn't shock me if Pat Friar Moose in the
same boat and he only got what fifteen snaps at Dublin?
Why is his role shrinking so noticeably? And for that matter,
John who only got sixteen snaps?

Speaker 9 (21:59):
Mark, I don't understand the and I didn't last year,
and it's even more so now through four games. The
both the devaluation and the lack of usage of Pat Fryerman.
That's not why they paid him. Pat Arthur Smith is
a tight Ends coach before, he's a big tight Ends guy.

(22:21):
But why Pat Frarmuth is not playing a lot? And
you could sit there and say, oh, well, it's part
of the game plan, but Friar Mooth is one of
your trusted receivers and him not playing a lot, I
don't know the answer to that directly. I know what
answer that I will be told, But I am just
surprised at how not only how little he's being targeted,

(22:46):
but how little he's even playing. And it's just it's
it's yeah, it's kind of confounding to me.

Speaker 2 (22:51):
Well, yeah to me too.

Speaker 1 (22:53):
And the offense looks nothing like I thought it would
under Arthur Smith. I mean, using Spencer Anderson is the
extra offen some lineman Washington in there. It's like going
back almost to the thirties. I understand the importance of
running the ball, but I'm not so sure what we're
talking about.

Speaker 2 (23:09):
Beats good teams in big games.

Speaker 9 (23:12):
Well, I mean that remains to be seen. But one
thing is for sure. And you know they didn't bring
Aaron Rodgers in to be a mailman. They brought him
into be a gunslinger Mark, and he's going to throw
the football so long as they give him the time,
and whether it's whether it's you know, to the running
backs at tight ends, the wide receivers. Obviously favors DK

(23:33):
Metcalf and understandably so and rightfully so. But they are
going to throw the football. But Arthur Smith is ready
to do that if necessary. Would he like to run
the ball, sure, but you know what, Bill Kawer loved
to run the ball too, but his philosophy was always
you throw early to run late. And Arthur Smith basically

(23:55):
adopts the same philosophy. You don't always see it because
they've had problems in the past getting getting the lead.
But that's the way he wants to play too. And
if that means coming out and we've seen Aaron Rodgers
do it, that means him coming out and throwing the football.
He's going to throw the football and you know.

Speaker 2 (24:14):
Run it later, Jerry.

Speaker 1 (24:17):
I want to get back to the defense per second.
Is the defense what it should be right now? Maybe
on the way to that, uh, because the last two
games have been better and it seems like Watt and
Hayward have caught up a.

Speaker 9 (24:28):
Bit yeah, Cam especially, I mean I know TJ. Yes,
I mean he had the two sacks the other game
and a lot of pressures and everything in Ireland. I thought,
what we saw Marcus. Now, I know what happened at
the end in the last two possessions, but I thought,
what we saw for three and a half quarters with
that defense is what everybody expected to see, shutting down

(24:50):
the run, pressuring the quarterback, stacking the quarterback, hitting the quarterback,
and forcing you know, bad plays, and the the defense
finally looked like what they expected and what I think
all the fans and everybody else expected with those with
that high price with that high price group. And yes,

(25:11):
they had some leakage there at the end. I'm not
going to make excuses for him, but when their cornerbacks
were all out, they had to play three safeties and
you can't play man coverage, they're playing zone, and you know,
some guys got mixed up and they hit him with
a big play obviously on the eighty one yard to
Jordan Addison. So but what I saw for three and

(25:32):
a half quarters, to me, was a very big positive
for the defense.

Speaker 1 (25:36):
Whose fault was it on that Addison catch and run?
It looked like Chuck Clark Terol Austin fell on his sword,
which is the right thing to do.

Speaker 2 (25:44):
He needs to stick up for the guys. But what
did you see, Mark?

Speaker 9 (25:49):
You know, I'll be honest with you, Well, I know
what I saw, a mass confusion, but I can't, I
honestly can't tell you what actually happened there because Mark,
after the game, I took off for for Paris, so
I didn't concern myself too much with the fallout from
the game other than the fact of what you know,
what I knew about the injuries and everything else, So

(26:12):
I didn't at that point, I'll be honest with you, Mark,
it didn't concern me to follow up on it. I
was more concerned about getting the Paris.

Speaker 2 (26:20):
Jerry made the right decision.

Speaker 1 (26:22):
Speaking of decisions, what did you make of the two
bade my mic common in the fourth quarter as chewing
the field goal on fourth and goal from the three
and then punting on fourth and one.

Speaker 9 (26:34):
Mark, I was a little surprised with the punt, and
I wasn't totally surprised with the field goal At the time.
I was thinking he made a mistake, but I had
to score. In my mind, confused. I thought the field
goal would make it a three point game, so I
know why he went for it. But the punt, I mean,

(26:56):
it didn't really surprise me because again, he's playing with
the lead, and I know where he was at that point,
but he's playing with the lead. His defense had been
pretty good, and he just thought, you know what we're
gonna We're not going to take that chance of being stopped.
And so it didn't surprise me when he gets to
that point, you know, I understand, I understand what he's doing.

(27:19):
So that didn't that didn't neither instance really surprise me.
But I really thought he might take the field goal
more so than go for You know what.

Speaker 1 (27:29):
Was weird was when they punted on the fourth and one.
They just drove it through the end zone, which seemed
to me obviously intentional. Why wouldn't you try to, you know,
stick in the corner or something like that.

Speaker 9 (27:39):
Well, Mark, and those were the instances, and I said
this that I said this when it happened, I go,
that's when you want the Ben Roethlisberger pooch punt. Put
him in the game, get them you know, in the shotgun,
have him drop back a little bit more. You know,
we've seen it years ago, and he gives that little
pooch down around the five yard line. That's what I
would have expected the punter to do, but apparently they

(28:01):
were content doing what they did and that that surprised
me more than anything.

Speaker 1 (28:05):
Jerry, if I had my way, would bring Ben back.
You know, I know you feel the same way. Now,
how bad is Cleveland and now with the quarterback situation
kind of I don't know if it's a distraction, Maybe
it's a fix the sudor things out of control like
we knew it would be. But they're one in three.
They're not making this QB change the punt on the season.

(28:26):
I think they probably see this division as wide open.

Speaker 9 (28:30):
Well I think too. Mark is the pressure, and I'm
sure it's coming from the top, and of course we
know the decisions they make from the top are not
the smartest. But when you draft two quarterbacks and you're struggling,
you're not gonna let those quarterbacks sit very long, and
you're going to use one of them because you feel

(28:51):
the pressure to use them. So Dylan Gabriel was the
higher draft pick. They did like what they saw from him.
They're going to use them, and so they're not just
gonna stand still, you know. I mean it's the same
reason Kenny Pickett went in when he did. I mean
they drafted him, you know, at halftime of the fourth game,
you know, because of some blow up in the locker room,
they throw Kenny Pickett in because they wanted to get

(29:12):
him into the lineup as soon as possible. And I
think so when Joe Flacco was struggling, the offense wasn't
scoring points. It just doesn't surprise me when you draft
a rookie, the fans, everybody, and then the owner two.
And what's next is if Bill, if Dylan Gabriel struggles,
they're gonna go right to Shador Sanders, Jared.

Speaker 2 (29:31):
What do you make a Rogers? So far? I saved
that for last.

Speaker 1 (29:35):
His numbers aren't impressive, but I think the control he wields,
the way the offense looks very buttoned up and doesn't
make mistakes in his crisp I think that's worth maybe
as much as numbers.

Speaker 10 (29:47):
I Mark, I agree with you.

Speaker 9 (29:49):
You know, once he have eight touchdowns, you know they're
three and one. The offense has been they've scored early
in games, they've scored back to back. They were late
in games to win games. You know, even you know
the week before in New England where he struggled in
the middle, but they had two impressive drives to start
and when they needed to score at the end, they did.

(30:12):
And you know, he brings a sense of calmness to
those guys, and you can see him redirecting plays and
in terms of redirecting routs and whatnot, and so you know,
you haven't had that since you had been and when
you have that, that's that's the big equalizer mark too
defensive schemes. And I've had no problem with the way

(30:35):
he's played. Hey, look he's forty one. He's not gonna
move like he did. But he's actually been moving around
a little bit better each game. But I think each
game he goes, as long as he stays healthy, he'll
get more and more comfortable with that, and he'll get
more and more comfortable with his linemen. And I and
I they are, and Broderick Jones among them, they're doing
a much better job of protection.

Speaker 1 (30:57):
Jerry, who would have thought Lamar would be sidelined, would
be sidelined. Joe Flacco has been benched to Aaron Rodgers,
we're only four weeks in.

Speaker 2 (31:04):
He's the last man standing in the AFC North.

Speaker 10 (31:08):
That's right.

Speaker 9 (31:08):
He's the cream of the AFC North quarterback crop.

Speaker 10 (31:11):
And we who would have thought that is right?

Speaker 2 (31:14):
Jerry, great stuff. Appreciate the time, all right, Mark, good
chat with you, my friend.

Speaker 2 (32:24):
You know what, I know?

Speaker 1 (32:25):
It was weird last night in the baseball playoffs, by
the way, LA eliminated Cincinnati, just dog pot them two
games in a row.

Speaker 2 (32:33):
What was it?

Speaker 1 (32:33):
Eight four and ten five? And afterwards they celebrated with
champagne like they had the full thing in the club house.
The lockers covered the goggles and whatnot. You just won
the World Series last year. Why would you break all
that crap out for a wild card round win. I
think a team that good that just won the World

(32:55):
Series should be more business like.

Speaker 2 (32:57):
Then again, maybe Otani had a big bet down on.

Speaker 1 (32:59):
A weep and he treated the guys. Is there any
dot in anybody's mind?

Speaker 7 (33:04):
Ough?

Speaker 1 (33:04):
Tawny made those bets and they just weren't going to
throw him out of baseball? Is there any dot in
anybody's mind? Let's go to Nate Nate as Mark anything?

Speaker 7 (33:17):
What up?

Speaker 10 (33:17):
Mark? What up?

Speaker 4 (33:20):
Would you go on a ayahuasca journey with Aaron Rodgers
if he was inviting you.

Speaker 1 (33:27):
Bob, I would heed my doctor's advice. If he thought
I I would be okay, No, I'm serious. If he
thought he would be I would be okay. At the
completion of the Ayahuasca Journey, I would definitely do it.

Speaker 10 (33:41):
Love it awesome.

Speaker 2 (33:42):
Let's go to Miles. I can see for Miles. You're
on with double.

Speaker 7 (33:46):
M Hey, what up mine?

Speaker 10 (33:49):
Mine?

Speaker 7 (33:51):
First off, I couldn't agree more on the Dodgers celebrating.
It's kind of lame. And I also hate when players
do those stupid dances on second base. Anyway, about the
movie Goodfellas, I remember you've you've spoken about that movie
a lot, and you said one of your favorite scenes
is when Jimmy smashes the phone booth after finding out
Tommy was killed.

Speaker 1 (34:11):
Yeah, it's the one time that Jimmy showed humanity.

Speaker 10 (34:16):
Right.

Speaker 7 (34:17):
Did he do that? Do you think because he actually
loved Tommy? Or was Tommy like their golden ticket?

Speaker 2 (34:23):
You know, that's that's a good question. That's a real
good question, because if.

Speaker 1 (34:27):
Tommy's made, he could intervene on their behalf whenever needed.

Speaker 2 (34:33):
Remember that everything went the scene in.

Speaker 1 (34:35):
The scene where they thought Tommy was gonna get made.
In the voiceover, Henry Hill goes, uh, it was like
we were all being made.

Speaker 7 (34:44):
Well, yeah, for sure. And then after he dies I
mean it goes back quickly for those guys. So I
always wondered that did he love Tommy? Do you think
because he doesn't now.

Speaker 2 (34:57):
I don't know. Although the way he got really emotion like.

Speaker 1 (35:00):
I would think if his first priority was that, you know,
Tommy was going to get made and help them, if
that was his first thought, that that was gone, I
think he would have got mad, not sad.

Speaker 7 (35:11):
That's a good point.

Speaker 10 (35:12):
Thanks Tom Lam, thank you.

Speaker 2 (35:14):
Let's go to Cosmo. Cosmo, ask Mark anything.

Speaker 4 (35:22):
So yeah, one of us see if you by the way,
that was awesome good fellows talk love that movie. Wanted
us see if you had saw that. City council is
calling for formal discussions with Bob.

Speaker 2 (35:34):
Nutting about what.

Speaker 4 (35:40):
Uh. They just want to have us sit down with
him about formal discussions first time about what his finances finances.

Speaker 1 (35:49):
Yeah, he doesn't have to disclose his books. He uh
is a private business.

Speaker 4 (35:58):
But if there's criminal malpractice, No, what.

Speaker 1 (36:03):
Is criminal about about the way he runs the team?
Tell me give me one identifiable example, one provable example.

Speaker 4 (36:11):
So their their whole argument is that this the this
is a tax funded part, okay, and he is obligated
to put so much towards the product, and they can
see if you know.

Speaker 1 (36:28):
The guarantee that's not in the lease or any of
their business agreements.

Speaker 4 (36:33):
Well then why else would a city councilman or councilwoman,
a person of government be calling for formal discussions.

Speaker 1 (36:39):
Because she's naiven, stupid and doesn't understand that they have
no power in this regard. I got the story up here. Yeah,
it just won't work. She's and she knows that, bru.
She's grandstanding, she's trying to make a name for self.
They cannot force nothing to compete, and if they try successfully,
he'll just move the team.

Speaker 4 (36:58):
So you think it's futile.

Speaker 1 (37:01):
What part of anything that's happened with the Pirates for
the last how many years has brought to mind any
word but futile.

Speaker 2 (37:10):
Let's go to a talkback.

Speaker 12 (37:13):
Hey, Mark, in the Sydney Crosby era, who would you
say is the most underrated penguin and who's the most
overrated penguin in terms of performance and contribution to the team.

Speaker 1 (37:27):
See, I wish you would call to ask that that's
a good discussion. Most underrated penguin probably Brian Rust, Probably
nobody else jumps immediately to mind, I was gonna say
Nick Benino, who had that great stretch when the Penguins
won their first Cup, who just went off the last

(37:50):
I don't know, a dozen games in the regular season
and all through the playoffs. Never played like that again
or before in his career.

Speaker 2 (37:57):
But I would.

Speaker 1 (37:58):
Probably say Brian Rust Justin Schultz is there too, And
that's who I say overrated.

Speaker 2 (38:09):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (38:10):
When you've had the success they did, it's hard to
call anybody overrated. I mean, Derek Bissard came in here disappointed,
but that's different.

Speaker 2 (38:23):
Carl Hagelan was just fast.

Speaker 1 (38:24):
And I think to some degree fans overrated him. But
he was part of a changeover with those five trades
Rutherford made that made the Penguins the fastest in hockey
within Like I said, five trades in a few months.

Speaker 2 (38:38):
So I don't know. I don't know who the overrated is.
I think the underrated is Rust.

Speaker 13 (38:43):
Let's go to a talkback, Mark, do you believe pirates
ownership when they say they're in it to win it
next year? And if not, does this mean it's Paul
Skins last year as a Pirate.

Speaker 2 (38:58):
They're not in it to win it.

Speaker 1 (39:00):
If not, could anybody believe one word that comes out
of Travis Williams's mouth, or Bob Nutting's mouth, or Ben
sharing his mouth? Kelly, I like, he's just a dupe.
And in terms of Paul Skins, they'll leave. He'll leave
when they decide. If they want, they can keep him
prisoner here for four more years, so they will.

Speaker 2 (39:19):
He will leave when they decide.

Speaker 1 (39:20):
He might ask God, but they don't have to let
him leave for four more years. All right, ask Mark
anything brought to us, like I said, by people's natural gas.
Get your calls in. Now they'll talking about other stuff.
Eight three, three, four two nine. We're gonna talk about
a little discussion John Butcher gross Head on Twitter with
a baseball announcer.

Speaker 2 (39:38):
Next on one O, five to nine.

Speaker 9 (39:40):
Now it's your chance to win one thousand dollars.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
