Speaker 1 (00:00):
That Michigan coaching story. It's rotten.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Part of me says that Michigan shouldn't care whohich coach
is banging. But I guess it got ugly. You gotta
sell charges. He's banging his assistant. You can't defecate where
you eat. But the funny part, and there's not much
funny about this, but on ESPN, on Get Up, they
wanted Michigan to steal Matt Campbell from Penn State and

(00:26):
the ink's not even dry on Campbell's contract.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
With Creepy Valley.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Sports is a dirty business, a dirty business, and college
football is the dirtiest part of it. That number again
to call eight three three four one two w XDX.
The Penguins host Montreal tonight. I almost hope the Penguins

(00:51):
trail in the third period because I'd feel better about
them coming back than I would about them holding a lead.
Jari's going to be in goal, Malcot and Riquel still
out in the third period. If the score is tied,
the Penguins need to be more aggressive and try to
win in sixty minutes because you can't go to three

(01:12):
on three and maybe a shootout when you know you're
gonna lose. Either that or you got to find a
way to be better at three on three and shootouts,
because does anybody believe the Penguins are gonna make the
playoffs by a comfortable margin?

Speaker 1 (01:27):
I don't. I know that's not the case.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
Every point counts oh and five in shootout is a disaster.
Oh and six after sixty minutes is a disaster and
will probably be why they don't make the playoffs. And
you can't let a sequence happen like Kyle Anaheim tied
the game Tuesday and an order of the Penguins think
they fed up or if it was just a series

(01:51):
of bad bomss.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
Take it from me, dudes, you eft up.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Here's a topic from yesterday based on a Joey Porter
senior SoundBite we played. Do you get mad at ex
Steelers for criticizing the current team?

Speaker 1 (02:06):
I do not.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
I loved what Ben just said that SoundBite we played
from his podcast, And here's what I saw on ESPN.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
Steeler fans, you get.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
Mad when they lose, but all it takes to turn
those fronds upside down is a win. Any win, like
Sunday you beat Baltimore. Well, the Ravens lost that game
more than the Steelers won it. But the Steelers do
lead the division. But in Philadelphia, where the Eagles won
the Super Bowl just last year, and they're eight and
five and they lead their division, the fans call the

(02:39):
talk shows and want a new quarterback.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
They want Jalen Hurts to be.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Benched, traded, released, shot, pushed on a flight of steps.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
He is the scapegoat there.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Part of me says that's nuts, but part of me
likes great expectations, even if they are horribly misplaced because Hurts,
like I said, he just won a super Bowl last year,
and I think he's generally done a very good job
as their quarterback. I talked about my Steelers' MVPs on

(03:13):
each side of the ball yesterday, and it was inconclusive
down the dial. They picked the running backs Warren and gainwell.
After seventeen carries for thirty four yards against Baltimore, I'm
not sure this team has a guy you can call
valuable unquote. I'm not sure their record would be any

(03:34):
different if any one guy got hurt. And as I've
said repeatedly, I am thoroughly amazed that they are seven
and six. I mean, what looks like he couldna play
on Monday night with his lung problem.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Hope he's okay.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
And by the way, somebody on Twitter said, when I
said that Watt's health is the primary concern, somebody tweeted,
you don't care, don't say that. Oh you're right, I don't.
I mean, but I don't want him to be ill
in a fashion that a lung disorder might indicate, because frankly,
that's what's killed a whole lot of my relatives, including

(04:09):
my mother. So I'm certainly not rooting for that. But
will I lose sleep because TJ spend a day in hospital.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
No, I won't.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
But I hope he's okay. I hope everyone's okay. I
hope everyone's health can be as good as mine. Anyway,
I would assume no what Monday night. But I think
they'll be all right at Edge Rusher, what with her
big getting more snaps by any means necessary, high Smith,
assuming he's healthy, which is always up for grabs, and

(04:38):
of course the modern day warrior Jack Sawyer.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
They'll be okay.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
But it goes back to the point I just made
that the Steelers don't have any one player you could
really consider to be valuable. Again, to say it for
the million time. I'm amazed they're seven and six. I mean,
my god, they're done to their four string left tackle
and you really can't tell the difference because they all
know very good. Then number again eight three to three,

(05:04):
four one two WXDX. I am just so over the
moon about the Philip Rivers thing. Looks like he's gonna
start for Indianapolis. What a time we live in Philip
Rivers starting Kenny Pickett's starting Shador Sanders played a great game.
And like I said, just a moment ago in Philadelphia,
Jalen Hurts won a Super Bowl, but they wont him out. Uh.

(05:25):
The big time quarterback draft for next April in Pittsburgh
that's falling apart. Only one maybe two quarterbacks projected now
to go in the first Tron. And while I loathe
the idea of talking about the Steeler draft now, I
will say that I wonder now if phill feel obligated
to take a quarterback and that could lead to Will

(05:47):
Howard getting a shot. I don't think so, but you do.
I heard Ray filde Paulo make a real good point
about Will Howard. He said that if the Steelers do
like Howard. They would want to see him actually take
snaps and exhibition gays before they would do anything like
remotely make a commitment to him.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
So maybe next year he gets in the mix more.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
But I would think that's the most he could realistically
hope for, And honestly, as a six dron pick, I
don't even think he should realistically be accorded that. But
the Philip Rivers thing got a couple chins in a
fat ass. He's already my favorite quarterback of all time.
Let's go to big Z.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
Big Z. You're all with Mark Hey?

Speaker 2 (06:30):
Now, doublem Hey Now?

Speaker 3 (06:33):
Yeah, Mark, So I wanted to talk about first of all.

Speaker 4 (06:35):
With the ESPN saying I was thinking, you know, I mean.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
For me, But I guess now that I'm thinking about
that loud. Dick Schaff was not Ah what was not.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
He was a host of the Sports Reporters. He was
not an anchor.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Yeah, that's a great show though, love that show.

Speaker 4 (06:49):
He was fantastic.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Dick Shaff was one of the pre eminent sports media
personalities of all time.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Did you ever I remember Long Cook appeared on that show.
Did you ever get invited or did you ever consider
going on that show?

Speaker 2 (07:00):
No, nobody invites me on their show anymore. Bro, think
about this. I see everybody else in Pittsburgh being on
every show everywhere else but me, and I don't know
why that is.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
I mean, maybe I'm two quote unquote contract, but I
don't care.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
Bro.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
Like people ask me if I missed the Sunday night
local TV shows, they pay bupkus and it waste your
Sunday night. I'm perfectly content with my careers at now.
Thanks to everybody very much. Let's go to Dan. Dan,
you're all with Mark.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Hey, Mark, two things. One about the Steelers and the
fans taking any kind of win. I agree with you,
and to be honest with you even and.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
That's okay, that's what makes the fans Dan, I.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
And I get that.

Speaker 5 (07:43):
But at the same time, if we're thinking big picture,
I mean, obviously I'm happier when they win, but at
the same time, even watching them when they're winning is like,
I don't know, I thought it was something wrong with me,
and I'm certain there is, but also it just like
is discussed thing and uncomfortable to watch them act.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Well, they're totally well, no, forget forget about that part.

Speaker 1 (08:05):
They're totally unentertaining to watch.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
There's nothing fun about watching the Steelers except if they
do win seven and six. I can't believe they won
seven games. It feels like fools gold. The win against
Baltimore felt like Foyle's gold. Everything nearly. I mean, tell
me a win this year that's been convincing, really convincing.

Speaker 5 (08:24):
Nope, exactly, nope.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
I'm sure you know there's one, but I can't think
about it. I can't. I can't think it was.

Speaker 5 (08:32):
And they say that, you know, Tomlin hasn't had a
losing season, but how many actually quote winning seasons has
he had because they say he's not.

Speaker 3 (08:40):
Losing, well, is he really winning though? You know? And
it's just medioctic.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
That just record, brov, that's just record. I'd like to
tone it down, but I can't. But look at these wins.
Two points over the Jets, seven points over to England
where they got what was it six turnovers, three points
over Minnesota. They beat Cleveland pretty good, but it's only Cleveland.
They beat Indy when Indy kept giving them the ball.

(09:07):
There's not a single win here. I mean, they beat
since he thirty four to twelve, but since he didn't
have Burrow. There's not one win here I find convincing.
How about you?

Speaker 5 (09:16):
No, And that's exactly to the point is, even when
it's a close game, you would think that'd be the
most exciting, it's actually just like it's it's not entertaining
at all, and you can't watch it because it's like
they're stumbling into a win and the other team is actually.

Speaker 6 (09:32):
Just losing more than the Steelers are winning.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
But no, but thank you for the call, Daan. Winning's fun,
no doubt about that. I don't want to denigrate people
being happy when their team wins. But the Steelers aren't
no fun to watch. Tell me what they do, it's
fun to watch. Tell me a player they got, it's
fun to watch. I'll hang up and listen. We want
more calls, next calls on the fifteens. I just wasted
to if indeed you're a believer in the sanctity of

(09:55):
calls on the fifteens, which I am. But dial now
eight three, three four one two XDX and we got
Jerry Dulac talking football at the bottom of the hour
here on one oh five to nine.

Speaker 1 (10:05):
Listen, I's a super genius. Mark Madden, how you doing.
We're all gonna walk to the rules. I make how
you liking now Beach TX at one nine, we're just
tuning in. TJ. Watt was in hospital with a lung disorder.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
Doesn't appear to be from a blow during a football
game or in any way football related. His status for
Monday night is obviously in doubt. More news as it develops.
We got Montreal in time to play the Penguins tonight.
Montreal and another team right in the middle fifteen wins,
fourteen losses. The Penguins are at fourteen wins fourteen losses.

(10:45):
But the Penguins have more loser points seven loser points.
That's the most in the Eastern Conference. Perhaps not necessarily
a good thing. Montreal is supposed to be a team
that can break through this year, and they can skate,
but they're top heavy. I love Demodoff up front, Hudson
on defense, Kawfield could score. Suzuki's overrated at center, but

(11:07):
he's pretty good. They play a fast, clean game. The
Penguins are four and four in their last day, but
that's with three loser points.

Speaker 1 (11:17):
I still can't believe what happened on Tuesday.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
That point one second crap, Satane scored a goal in
three games, but I think he's played well, so that's
no biggie. But if there's a guy that they don't
need to slump, especially with Gino out, that'd be the captain,
Graves and Shay and Watherspoon on that left side of defense.

Speaker 1 (11:35):
They're all solid.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
I wish one of them would have been out there
for the end of the game against Anaheim on Tuesday.
I'd like to see Saint Ivany get a shot on
the right side now that he's healthy. I will always
be a Saint Ivany fan because of last year when
somebody went after Sid. He came off the bench and
went after the guy should have got suspended. I don't

(11:57):
know how they didn't notice that he came off when
was dead, but I always gave that guy credit, and
the Penguins need more of that than that. They can
get that from him specifically, So much the better, so
much the easier, because you know what you're getting later
on I'll talk. I was listening to NHL Radio today

(12:17):
on Sirius XM driving around and they were debating how
the small rink at the Olympics is going to affect
roster construction and play in the games, like three feet
three feet smaller, like that really matters. I can assure
you it does not at all. Let's go to Corey. Corey,

(12:39):
you're all with Mark?

Speaker 1 (12:41):
Hey, good day? I said, good.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
Day, Hey, Mark.

Speaker 5 (12:45):
At what point do you think Damn mus is going
to realize that he just cannot put fifty eight on
the ice with under three minutes left in the game.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (12:53):
Actually, that's just not true. Letang has some bad moments.
But I mean, what would you suggest Matt Dumba?

Speaker 5 (13:01):
Anybody but Lang Latang is horrible his career Okay, you.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
See, but that's just stupid hot.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
His career is not over, bro, if he's still a
good player, needs to temper his game. I know you
sound like one of those guys that just blames him
for everything, like you think the team would be appreciably
better if he wasn't on a correct Okay, okay, so right,
and that shows how stupid and really ignorant the hockey
you are. But so, but just let's stay with this.

(13:27):
If you would bench Latang, cut Latang, shoot Latang, who
would you play in his place? Anybody spoken spoken like
somebody that's really stupid. I keep throwing the stupid hook
out there and you keep biting it. Now answer the
question and don't be quite the smuck you've proven to
be so far. If you would bench Latang? Who would

(13:48):
you play in his place? I need a name here.

Speaker 4 (13:51):
Well, first of all, no, no no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
no no no.

Speaker 1 (13:54):
You don't get to say anything besides a name. Now
it's the me show, not the youth show.

Speaker 2 (13:59):
So I say it again or you get hung up
on which frank that I should have done a while ago.
If La Tang got benched, who would you play in
his place?

Speaker 6 (14:07):
The original question about is when.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
That's an easy one, goodbye. I gave you two chances
to answer the question, what are you gonna play? Matt
dumba Jack say and ivany Really okay, let's go over
what Latang can do well.

Speaker 1 (14:23):
And don't get me wrong.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
He's made some mistakes, including in that overtime not overtime,
but wither point one second left. He's a one man breakout.
He's strong, physically strong on his skates too, is generally
good with the puck ninety to ninety five percent of
the time. Latang's great, but there's there's a segment of

(14:46):
Penguin fans who have just decided he's the blame for everything, because, honestly,
despite it being a time that generally supports hockey, although
there were a lot of empty seats there Tuesday night,
probably again tonight, but despite being a time that generally
supports hockey and its team, you don't know what you're watching.
That guy certainly didn't like to act like it's always
the siren song of the truly stupid, Like that guy, Well,

(15:08):
who should play this place?

Speaker 1 (15:09):
Anybody else? Doesn't matter?

Speaker 2 (15:11):
Of course it matters. Of course it matters. If you
want to talk hockey, that's five. But let's talk hockey.
Just not indulge you. You think's a fault in that
guy's case, His mom and dad were fault.

Speaker 1 (15:24):
Never should have reproduced.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
Okay, op Nex's gonna talk football with Jerry Dulack one
five nine X Oh, wait, I gotta talk about bet
parks first. No, I don't got to. I want to
because I love bet parks. Whether your team wins or loses,
there's always another way to win with bet parks, odds, bets, slots,

You bet bet Parks. You must be twenty one and
in p eight New Jersey or Maryland. Gambling problem Call
one eight hundred gambler Jerry du lat next one oh
five to nine.

Speaker 1 (16:26):
It's the Woody.

Speaker 5 (16:27):
Show Tomorrow morning from six till ten.

Speaker 1 (16:29):
Whoa you got a day Wednesday?

Speaker 2 (16:31):
Maybe on one five nine season when you got a
young trophy? White ohs Monday to I can't even quote
the big o'bowski right, goodbye, dx A one Steelers hosting
Miami Monday night in the game. I expect it'll be
difficult joining me now to talk about it. He covers
the Steelers for the Post. Because hate always a pleasure
to talk to Jerry Dulac. Jerry, you had a great

(16:52):
tweet earlier. When you look at the possession time for
the Steelers and their opponents, that Steelers defense is played
the equivalent of all a most three full extra games
already this year.

Speaker 1 (17:02):
That has to be debilitating.

Speaker 6 (17:04):
Right, yeah, Mark, When you look at it, what it
is is the Steelers have run the fewest plays in
the league seven hundred and eighteen, and they've allowed the
most plays in the league eight hundred and ninety seven.
So that one hundred and seventy six play difference. When
you divide it by what is the average amount of
snaps league wide for a team, which is sixty one

(17:28):
and a half, it comes out to nearly two point nine,
which is nearly three full games, three extra games more.
That that means the defense has played. So instead of
playing thirteen games, Mark, this defense right now has played
six sixteen games. They got four more to go. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (17:45):
And it's an older team, an older defense, and older
teams and players don't rally, They just get older and
in that vein not related to age.

Speaker 1 (17:55):
But TJ. Watt hospitalized with a long disorder.

Speaker 2 (17:58):
Is there anything you can add, Jerry to what will
already know isn't in any way football related, like a
blow he took or whatever.

Speaker 6 (18:05):
Yeah, Mark, I don't know that. I'll just add real
quickly too, to the previous point of the Steelers, there
hasn't been a game this year where they've run more
plays than the opponent. And you know, the biggest difference
disparity was Sunday in Baltimore when the Ravens ran twenty
six more plays. Know what they're saying is about all

(18:26):
I know, You know, I don't want to say. I
get the sense that it's not serious. But I can't
sit here and even speculator say because I don't know.
You know, they're saying his playing availability for Monday is
in question, but we shall see. But I really can't Mark,

(18:47):
I don't know that it had anything to do with
with a blow to the chest or anything like that.
But again, I don't know that. I haven't heard that,
and so I be hesitant to say anything more that
just might until I hear something more concrete. You know,
I don't want to misrepresent.

Speaker 2 (19:05):
Any Miami's a formidable opponent right now, aren't they four
straight wins? They're running the ball now, are they good?
Or did they just beat a bunch of bad teams recently.

Speaker 6 (19:15):
Well, that's part of it, Mark, But like as I
always say, that's part of that's part of the job.
You beat the teams. And it's not like the Dolphins were,
you know, an eight and three team. They were struggling
just like everybody else. They started one and six. They've
won five of their last six games, four in a row.
But what they've done, Mark is you know, they've kind

(19:37):
of taken the ball on a two of tago by
Lowa's hands and they're running the football. And so when
you look at two his stats, you know, early in
the year he's throwing thirty two thirty five times and
they were scoring some points and maybe that's because they
got behind, but you know, fourteen picks he was turning
the ball over. And you look at these last four games, Mark,

(19:59):
the averaging one hundred and sixty five yards rushing. He's
only thrown three interceptions in that time. And so two
hundred and thirty nine yards rushing last week and that probably,
you know, matchup wise, doesn't gode well for the Steelers,
who have given up two forty nine and two seventeen

(20:19):
yards rushing in their last two games. So there's no
question what the Dolphins are going to try and do,
and that's to continue what they have been doing. Don't
have to to throw it more than sixteen seventeen times
twenty times tops, depending on what the score is, and
try and you know, stay ahead of the stay aheaded schedule,
as Mike Tomlin likes to say so, and it's going

(20:42):
to be up to the Steelers to stop it, which,
let's face it, haven't. There have been games would have
been pretty good Jonathan Taylor, Josh Jacobs, but they haven't
been consistent stopping the run. They certainly haven't been the
last two games. And I think maybe getting Derek Harmon back,
which appears to be the case, has to help Jerry.

Speaker 2 (21:00):
I don't wish any will on Darnell Washington, but I'm
almost like to see him miss this game in concussion
protocol because I think it's absurd that they've fallen so
in love with that fat kid tight end package.

Speaker 1 (21:12):
I want the real tight ends there, Friarmouth and John u.

Speaker 6 (21:16):
Well, especially Friarmuth, Mark and I hear you about that.
You know, Darnell Washington plays so many snaps because one
because they've involved him in the past game, but two
and most importantly they you know, they love his blocking
and understandably so. But I the fact that they've gotten
away from Friarmuth, as you know, if they're they're one

(21:38):
of their two primary targets. It's just still baffling to me.
I don't get it. He's as dependable and as reliable
as you have and and to not target him and
throw the ball to him more is just unconscionable. Mark,
and I'm with you in that regard. Get Pat Friarmuth involved.

(21:58):
Every game has a high target. Look, you don't have
to get ten targets, but how about at least four
or five every game minimum, and rely on him, especially
in those short yardists situations, third and four, even third
and three. You know, have them sit down over the
line of scrimmage, turn around, sit there and throw them
the ball, whatever the case may be. Utilize him more.

(22:21):
And you're paying him a lot of money. And the
fact that they haven't utilized him really as much as
you would have thought since he signed that big contract,
and especially this year, I don't get it. And you
know what, shame on them.

Speaker 1 (22:33):
Well, Jerry and the follow up.

Speaker 2 (22:35):
It's like there's no communication between you know, personnel people,
the coach, the offensive coordinator.

Speaker 1 (22:41):
You traded Minka for for John.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
Hu and for Ramsey, and now Ramsey is a pale
imitation of Minca at safety. I mean, he's doing okay,
but he's not Minky even Minca in the last couple
of years here and John who is barely being used.
Don't don't you think about where everybody fits before you
make could trade.

Speaker 1 (23:00):
For the love of.

Speaker 6 (23:01):
God, well, Mark, yes and yeah, and it was by
necessity that you know that they ended up having to
move Jalen Ramsey. But you know, I will disagree in
one form. Jalen Ramsey has made more plays this year
than than Mika Fitzpatrick has made the last two with
the Steelers. But John new Smith's the biggest disappointment of

(23:23):
the year. You know, they were going to make that
trade early on, just or they talked about it, just
for John new Smith. You know, he caught eighty eight
balls last year with Miami and once he had thirty
catches for like an average six yards per reception, and
he's just you know, barely used. I don't know if
it's because they don't use them or you know, he's

(23:44):
he's just you know, at age thirty one has slowed down,
not getting open whatever the case may be. You know,
you thought that was going to be a big part
of the offense and it has really been effectively, Let's
face it, Mark no part of the offense.

Speaker 2 (23:57):
We're talking to Jerry Doak at the post because that
here on the Mark at Madden Show. Jerry's brought to
us by bud Light, Easy to drink, easy to enjoy.
Obviously TJ. Watt being okay as everybody's primary concern, but
I feel like they can cover an edge rusher providing
Highsmith stays healthy in this game against Miami.

Speaker 6 (24:14):
How about you, well, Mark, while he has been healthy,
Alex Heismith has been their best defensive player the last
four or five games. Yeah, the numbers show it. I
thought it was fitting on Sunday that he ended the
game with that sack. You know, he has five sacks,
I think eight tackles for loss in his last four games.

(24:35):
The problem with Alex is he's had those soft muscle
soft tissue injuries that have kept him out, you know,
a couple of games here and there. But yeah, he's
been He's been very good, and you know, Nick Herbig
obviously is going to be the guy who's going to
step in for what if he can't play. I was
surprised because they drafted Jack Sawyer for or the reason

(25:01):
that they suggested. You know, the way the Baltimore Ravens
dominated them in a playoff game, pushed them around. They
wanted a bigger outside linebacker. And he only played three
snaps against the Ravens. That surprised me. But obviously if TJ.
Watt can't play, he'll he'll go back to playing the
amount of snaps he did before. They were using him
quite a bit. To only use the three snaps against

(25:21):
the Ravens, I'm not sure what that was about, but
you know he'll he'll play a little bit more. But hey,
Nick her Big stats are or basically the same as
t J. Watts in terms of tackles for loss. He
actually has a couple more h he has the same
amount of fumble recoveries. He has I think one fewer
sacker or the same amount I think the same amount

(25:43):
of sacks. So he's been productive when he's played, But
obviously he's not the physical linebacker that TJ. Watt is.
But then Miami relies on speed and especially with Devon
a chain and so, uh, you know, having Nick Herbig
in there. Look, it's not t J. Watt, let's face it,

(26:03):
but having Nick Herbig in there is is not a
bad substitute.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
Jerry, We've talked about this before, but the question to
me is not yet been answered.

Speaker 1 (26:11):
Do the Steelers haven't identity yet? On either side of
the ball?

Speaker 6 (26:16):
Mark I would say offensively no, and defensively probably the
same answer, because their identity wants to be stopping the run,
and they've just been too inconsistent as soon as they
showed it in a couple of games, you know, against
the Colts, against the Packers, and even against the Bears.
You know, you're talking about three of the best rushing

(26:38):
teams in the league. You know, the Bears, they you know,
they ran for ninety nine yards, but you know a
week later they ran for two ninety nine. And they've
been doing it. They came in against the Steelers as
the NFC's number one rushing team, and so I think
they're number one overall now. And so I thought the
Steelers showed in some of those games the ability to
contain the run if not stop it. And then you

(27:01):
turn around and you see what they've done the last
two weeks. And again, maybe that's because Derek Carmon wasn't
in there. I never like to blame it on one person,
you know, good or bad, So I can't imagine that's
the reason. But that's the identity that's missing from this defense.
They just don't shut the other team down on any
amount of with any amount of consistency. I will give them,

(27:24):
give them their props though for this mark. You know,
in four other previous games it's quality teams Seattle, Chicago,
green Bay and I'm missing who's the other one I'm missing,
But they had a halftime lead and oh at Buffalo
and failed to protect it. At least they did that

(27:45):
on Sunday, and they did it by you know, when
you think the Ravens got to the Steelers ten on
three separate occasions in the fourth quarter and they came
away with just two field goals, and that's not counting
them getting to the thirty yard line at the end
of the game where was ended with Alex Heismith sax.
So I give them credit for making the plays them

(28:05):
then to keep the Ravens you know somewhat at Bay
at that point, but their lack of consistency game in
and game out, for the most part, I think deprives
them of their identity. And for a team that wants
to run the ball offensively, again, we've seen sporadic instances
where you know, whether Kenny Gamewell or even Jalen Warren

(28:27):
have been productive. Thirty four yards last week, mark that's
the fewest in five years, and so you know, obviously
if you want to be a running, run, somewhat oriented attack,
that's certainly not the way to do it.

Speaker 2 (28:42):
And in that vein Jerry, I mean, your record is
what your record is, but part of me can't believe
they're seven and six. They're a top to division for
what that's word. But it makes me wonder where they're
really going. I don't look at any of their wins
this year has been particularly convincing.

Speaker 6 (28:59):
I think Minnesota and Indianapolis games, and I know that
Minnesota is not the playoff team of thirteen and three
team they were last year, but I thought those two
games were convincing, and I thought being able to pull
out the game the other day or hold off the Ravens,
I thought was big for them, given the fact that

(29:22):
they had been in a slide, you know, five of
their last seven games, Mark, they lose that and they
get that six out of eight. Man, the Wolves would
be out on Monday night for sure. So but again
that goes to the consistency. They haven't had back to
back wins since Week four at this time of year.
Maybe they went through their little streak, but they need,

(29:43):
you know, they need to do that. And you know,
I'll say this to Mark. You know, they're one of
three teams who've been in first place the entire season
from week one and whether that's is that whether you
want to applaud them for that or you know, throw
more shade on what's going on with the rest of
the division. Regardless of the fact, despite all their foibles,

(30:07):
they've never been out of first place in the division.
And so I guess that doesn't matter if you're thirteen
and three or seven and six. You know, seven and
six right now. So we're going to see where it
takes them. In these last four games I think, you know,
are gonna be indicative of at least what you think
this team is or might might might be able to

(30:27):
do in the postseason.

Speaker 2 (30:28):
Yeah, I agree with all that, And to that point,
I think this game feels huge.

Speaker 1 (30:33):
It's at home.

Speaker 2 (30:34):
They've won like what, twenty two straight games on Monday
night at home. Miami has won four in a row.
But they're not thought to be that good. That said,
they have one win less than the Steelers. If they
lose this game, it'll feel very much like same old story.
If they can win, maybe maybe momentum would actually build.

Speaker 6 (30:51):
Finally, I agree Mark, and to your point, if they
win the game, then all they have to do is
win one more games against the Ravens and then it
doesn't matter what they do in the other two. And
so if they go two and two in the last
four games and one of those wins is against the Ravens,
they win the division title. They could go one in

(31:13):
three conceivably as long as they beat the Ravens. And
given the Ravens schedule I see the New York Times,
their computer analysis still gives them an eighty percent chance
of winning the division because you know, Baltimore is poor
as they have been playing. You know, they had the
Bengals this week who beat them already. Then they have

(31:34):
Green Bay and they have New England and then another
game with the Steelers. So Steelers beat the Dolphins. That
puts them one win against the Ravens at the very
least from clenching a division.

Speaker 2 (31:45):
But by the same token, didn't I read somewhere if
the Ravens win out, they win the division no matter what.

Speaker 6 (31:50):
Well, that's why I said. That's why I said that
the Steelers have to beat the Ravens, okay, in that
final game, So one of those wins has to be
against the Ravens. But that's provided you know the Ravens
are going to win all the rain remaining games. And
when you look at their schedule, Packers, New England and
even the Bengals the way they've been playing, I don't

(32:12):
think that's uh. I don't think. I think that's nice talk,
But looking at it, I don't know how realistic that is.

Speaker 1 (32:18):
Jerry, great stuff. I appreciate the time.

Speaker 6 (32:20):
Enjoy the game, all right, Mark, always good chat with you,

want to reiterate the Darnel Washington thing I brought up
with Jerry Dulac. Washington is in question for Monday night's
game because he's a concussion protocol. I hope he can't play,
and that's no knock on him. I wish him well.

(33:45):
I want everyone to have perfect health, especially the Steelers
because they've done so much for the city.

Speaker 1 (33:51):
But I would love to see Don L.

Speaker 2 (33:53):
Washington unavailable, and let's get back to using real tight
ends like John Newsmith and in particular, Pat Fryarmouth.

Speaker 1 (34:02):
Done.

Speaker 2 (34:02):
Washington just this fat kid with minimal athletic ability. He
has no talent beyond big. The Steelers have fallen in
love with him as a novelty act, but what they
have him doing isn't working. Except for the one viral
moment where he caught a pass and ran over some people.
They're running game stinks. He's in there the block right,

(34:23):
the jumbo package.

Speaker 1 (34:25):
What about that?

Speaker 2 (34:26):
It don't work neither you now I know, because they're
running game sucks. That's the problem with the Steelers, always
has been with Tomlin, even with Coward to a degree,
they come up with stuff that doesn't work, but they're
so in love with being clever that they don't change it. Oh,
jumbo package, Big Fat's so tight end. We're the Steelers
power football, and it's not working. It's not effing working.

(34:53):
I never thought I'd be the biggest supporter of Pat Fryarmuth,
who I've always felt has been a bit overrated and
certainly overpaid more than ever.

Speaker 1 (35:01):
But that guy should be playing over the fat kid.
Let's go to a talkback.

Speaker 5 (35:09):
Hey, Mark, in your opinion, what is the best Chinese
food in Pittsburgh?

Speaker 2 (35:16):
Uh, Jade Grill and Mount Lebanon. I really like that one.
I eat Asian. I like their sushi too, and it's
a local chain. I think it's just local. But sesame
In I like Jade Grill and sesame In both a
great deal.

Speaker 1 (35:36):
Let's go to another talkback.

Speaker 6 (35:38):
Hey, super genius.

Speaker 8 (35:39):
I know you're more of a classic slash hard rock guy,
but what did you ever think of the Moody Blues.

Speaker 1 (35:45):
I liked a couple of.

Speaker 4 (35:46):
Other songs, but just one of your thoughts on them.

Speaker 8 (35:48):
Thanks.

Speaker 2 (35:50):
I thought they sucked, And when I was reviewing Conscience
for the Post Gazette, I wrote a review that said
they sucked, that they were just blame and boring, and
O'Brien and Gary, who were a real popular morning show
I think on twelve to fifty back then ripped me
to shreds for my review, saying I was the only
one there that didn't like the Moody Blues. And that

(36:13):
might have been true, but I was also the only
one there reviewing the concert, so no, not necessarily a
Moody Blues fan, Although I did attend a show a
little bit later that I reviewed, and I said, Okay,
they didn't.

Speaker 1 (36:25):
Suck quite as bad.

Speaker 2 (36:27):
I will say this, there were times that I would
adjust my review to get a good line in. For example,
Joan Jet who I really like. She opened for Robert
Plant and she played a perfectly passable show, but I
gave her a one line review.

Speaker 1 (36:46):
At the end of of.

Speaker 2 (36:48):
Course, canonizing Robert Plant's performance, I said, I love myself
for hating her, but she was okay.

Speaker 1 (36:57):
Let's go to a talkback.

Speaker 8 (37:00):
Why don't you refer to the mouth breathers as the
pores anymore?

Speaker 1 (37:05):
It was some of your best work, well not my
best work. That's stolen from MJF.

Speaker 2 (37:12):
Maxwell Jacob Friedman, who's the lead heel when he's used properly,
which isn't very often in all elite wrestling. Yeah, I
got Max refers to the poors as the poors. I
don't know why I dropped it, but I haven't said
it in a long time. Maybe you've refreshed its juice.
Let's go to Matt Matt ask Mark anything.

Speaker 8 (37:35):
It become pretty clear that the pirates are only trying
to turn a profit rather than win but what kind
of move or multiple moves would show that they're actually
trying to win within.

Speaker 1 (37:46):
That Well, let me tell you what they could do
to convince me.

Speaker 2 (37:53):
They could make this trade for Brandon Low the second
basement of tamp and signed him to a long term deal,
and no matter what they had to give up for him,
give up some legitimate prospects, do something while Paul Skeens
is here.

Speaker 1 (38:05):
If they got him and went out and got another.

Speaker 2 (38:07):
Legitimate, big time back, like I keep hearing Eugenio Suats,
who who you know is a flawed player but has
great power, he would still be real expensive, but he
might be a guy who would be willing to come
to the Pirates if they overbid a little bit. So
if you made that trade for Low and got Suarez
and didn't sacrifice Chandler or obviously Paul Skeens, then you

(38:31):
wouldn't con me, but you would at least convince me
you're trying more than I believed you ever would.

Speaker 8 (38:38):
Yeah, I agree with that simply from the perspective too.
As Low, he'll be at the end of his deal
at the end of this year. This next season is
going to be a knifemare with a lockout. So I
think signing a guy to a one year deal makes
more sense than any especially for small market.

Speaker 2 (38:52):
Well, no, but you're not gonna get Suarez for a
one year deal. If you trade for a branded law,
you're not gonna re sign him for one year deal.
You might him as a rental for the one year.
And I'm saying these things without even a shred of
conviction that they have even a one percent chance of happening.

Speaker 1 (39:09):
Let's go to David.

Speaker 4 (39:12):
Hey, Mark, I listen when you talk with Pierre Maguire
a lot, and I know he stresses, you know how
he thinks some important gold differential is correct. That being said,
Washington has the third highest gold differential. Do you think
that's fools Gold or do you think they're for real?

Speaker 2 (39:31):
I thought they were to collapse last year. I thought
they were too old.

Speaker 1 (39:35):
Last year. I thought OVI was too old. Last year.
They just won't go away, will they?

Speaker 3 (39:41):
No?

Speaker 4 (39:41):
When I saw that the other day, I couldn't believe it.
I think, Plus, I.

Speaker 2 (39:44):
Think they have the best record in the conference currently. No,
it's not fools Gold, BRUV. I mean, would it shock
me if they finally did run out of gas?

Speaker 5 (39:53):
No?

Speaker 1 (39:53):
But but I think they're for real.

Speaker 2 (39:55):
I think they will be at the very least the
playoff team and maybe at the top of the the division. Again,
didn't they finish first in the division last year?

Speaker 1 (40:04):
Yes? Yeah, and good for OV Now now they got brakes.

Speaker 2 (40:08):
Like I know, Sid had wondered why Washington was still
up there and the Penguins weren't. Well, that's because guys
like Oh and Backstrom had debilitating injuries to cut them
cap relief.

Speaker 1 (40:21):
But nonetheless why ask why?

Speaker 2 (40:24):
And also because they didn't trade away as many picks
to try to win more like the Penguins did. But
the Penguins won three times and the Caps won once.
Thank you for the call, one oh five nine y X.
