Speaker 1 (00:08):
On yesterday's show, our football ger were Matt Williamson. He
explained in detail, a bit concise breathe what the Steelers
did with that four to three look against the Colts
and the mixing it up with the inside backers and
the outside backers.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Let's listen to that again.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
That's definitely a new wrinkle and an interesting one. And
I'm basically what they did was it was a basically
a true four to three stack like you used to
see all the time. And the three was not a
her big girl Watt or a high Smith. It was
an off the ball linebacker. And I found it kind

(00:48):
of curious. I'm like, holcome's out for this game. He's
your third best guy, and Harrison's coming back. What's the logic?
I mean, is Harrison so great he has to see
the field? Like I've kind of lobbied with Herbert, you know,
you change your your personnel usage and the answer is no.
But what they were doing behind the four to three
I think was really interesting too, in that they played

(01:11):
a lot a lot more too high safeties looks. You know,
they're at the top of the league in single high safety.
You know, think about menca and center field well, in
this game they played a lot more.

Speaker 4 (01:23):
Too high safeties.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
And where I'm going with this, and I'm sure this
is the logic behind it, is Harrison's a big body dude.
He doesn't run real well, but he's kind of your
land and Roberts run thumper between the tackle, you know,
big guy that if they're going to play too high,
they're going to have a big run stuffer to deal
with the Taylor problem. And it worked really well. I

(01:47):
think it's an interesting rate.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
That's Matt Willimson. I think it can work really well
moving forward. The LA Chargers they run the ball a
ton and with with all that, they're not going to
pass as much. I would keep that in my pocket
for a Sunday Night's game at the LA Chargers. Hey,
I'm not a Mike Tomlin fan. Some of you out
there may have noticed. And Tara lost. It is just

(02:11):
Tomlin's bobo. But that tactic what Williamson was talking about.
And finally putting Ramsey at safety, which apparently is going
to be the case again at LA. It was pretty
close to genius and it went a long way toward
winning the game. So it almost pains me to do it,
but full credit to Mike Tomlin for making that decision,

(02:35):
for coming up with that number to calls eight three
three four one two WSDX. I repeat again. I would
have traded for Sauce Gardner given up two first round picks.
I would have traded for Jacoby Myers. That's the easy one.
That's the easy one. Jacksonville gave up a fourth and
a sixth. You give up a third and a sixth.

(02:57):
That's nothing. That's a small price to pay to give
yourselves a legitimate receiving corps, although I think a cornerback
is what they need more. And by the way, it's
a couple of minutes after four so if a trade's
been made, we just haven't heard about it, but it's
too late to make one because we are past the

(03:18):
four pm deadline.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
One trade.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
I haven't seen this confirmed, but there's the word that
the Chiefs are gonna take Brice Hall.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
The Jets are having a fire sale.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Much like the die Hard where Timothy Olephant was the villain,
and the Chiefs are probably getting running back Brice Hall
from the Jets for third round pick.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
And you look at the AFC.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Chiefs get Briess Hall, Colts get Sauce Gardner, Jags get
Jacoby Myers, the Steelers get. They talk a good game,
they say they want to win, they say they're all
in with these senior citizens. All they want to do

(04:08):
is have a winning season. All they want to do
is get in the playoffs. All they want to do
is burnish Tom wins legend for not having the losing seasons.
That's all they want to do. You look at the
other teams that made all these moves to be better.
The Steelers didn't do anything. They didn't do anything. How
are you not angry? How are you not mad? How
are you not just going nuts? And the answer is

(04:30):
because your marks and you're stupid. That's an easy one.
Speaking of marks and stupid, nobody is dumber than the
Steelers fans on Twitter nobody And I tweeted before the show,
Steelers should have traded for Sauce at that price. Fyes,
And here's some of the responses I got. WU Tank

(04:52):
Forever treats and the boy, I bet he's a he
gets a lot of women. WU tank Forever tweets two
first and thirty million a year pass on that. Okay,
why why you're trying to win? Or not why it's
not your money. Do you want to win? Why would
you pass? And the answer is there's not a good reason.

(05:13):
Andrew tweets they want to have a quarterback in two
years unless you believe in Will Howard.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
No, I just believe in Joe Hendry.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
But and they want to have a first round pick
next year when the drafts here. But again I said earlier,
that's no way to assemble your roster to make that
a factor.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
In two years.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Let's say they draft the quarterback of everybody's dreams in
next year's first round. Well, by the time he's ready
to be legit, all these old guys going to be
gone without having won anything, and then you'll really be rebuilding,
even though you'll never admit it.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Here's a tremendous one.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Johnny be Good, who should change his Twitter handled to
Johnny be Stupid. Stop day drinking. He's another Porter. Penalty
is starting to pile up. Okay, that's the first time
in history anybody's compared Sauce Garden to Joey Porter Jr.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
And as far as the day drinking goes, oh.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
My god, oh crap, what an unbelievable say by Madrid's goalie.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
Oh f fs.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
Oh my god, cornerkick header Van Dyke header drives it
courtois Who's just this huge gargoyle makes the save?

Speaker 2 (06:38):
What a dink?

Speaker 1 (06:40):
Okay, let's get back to the tweets already in progress.
Now I can't get okay, it is okay using the
R word to say how stupid I am? That's from
That's from a guy who has passing wind as part
of his Twitter handle. You know I don't say that
F word. You can say it. I just that's what

(07:02):
I just thought. Another great save. Get out of the way,
you son of a bitch, and shut your app tweets.
That's the most low brain thing you've ever said. Hey,
you know what, I just want to win. I just
want to win. I don't even care about the Steelers,
and I want them to win more than you apparently

(07:23):
do Steelers tweets and not the real Steelers. Why would
you trade for cornerback using two first ground picks? You
miss out on drafting a quarterback for the twenty twenty
six and twenty twenty seven seasons. I would have done
it for DK Metcalf at twenty twenty six first ground
pick in twenty to twenty seven fifth dron pick. Yeah,
you would have traded DK metcalf and I'll got a

(07:44):
receiver in the deal. Like I said, Steeler fans in
general are stupid. Steeler fans our Twitter are beyond stupid.
We got Mike de Fabe at the bottom of the hour.
He's smart.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
I can't believe m f and Quartois made those two saves.
Bang bang.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
Neil nil in the forty ninth minute. At least we're
playing well. We hadn't played well well. We played okay Saturday,
but we haven't played well like this in a bit.
But still it's nil nil, all right, number to call
eight three three four one two w xdx god, I

(08:23):
want to I want us to score so bad. Now
here come Madrid. Let's go to a break before something
bad happens. One O, five to nine.

Speaker 5 (08:31):
It's the Woodie Show tomorrow morning from six till ten.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
WHOA you got a day Wednesday? Maybe on X how
you liking nappydx?

Speaker 1 (08:43):
At one nine, it looks like that Threese Hall deal
there running back going from the justic Kansas City did
not happen. One deal that is confirmed is with all
out the stud tackle for the LA Chargers. The Chargers
got Trevor Penning the tackle from New Orleans. That is not,

(09:06):
strictly speaking, replacing, you know, equal with equal, but it's
an upgrade. At least they did something. Steelers did nothing.
Trade deadlines coming gone, Tom with did his little KOI
talk with the media today.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
I like to go shopping. He didn't get nothing.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
Same old crap from this team, same old bs, same
old alleged commitment to winning, same old not doing enough,
same old, same old. I'm pissed eight three to three.
I'm pissed because Madrid's goal is playing out his ass
A three three four one two WSDX. That's the number

(09:44):
to call. We got Mike the Fabo at the bottom
of the hour. This guy's been waiting. Let's go to
Don and Bethel Park. Donal, what's up?

Speaker 4 (09:55):
What ut super genius?

Speaker 6 (09:58):
Hey, I just wanted to comment. Uh Jar's play last
night was weak.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
He's not confident.

Speaker 6 (10:04):
Uh he just sat in his net like you said,
I thought he took us out of the game. And
question for you, what is all the arbitration and rules
and waivers that would require us to call up the
guy from Wilkespear who's playing lights out and have him
in Sea loss is the is the goal?

Speaker 2 (10:21):
Yeah, they're They're just not going to do that, nor
should they.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
You could, You could put Jari on waivers if he
clears that send them down.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
They they did that last year. Uh so that that's
easy to do. Uh. But but the plan is to
have more Shoff down there.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
The plan was never to start off eight four and two,
let alone eight two and two, let alone to have
an eight game point streak. The plan was to leave
him there to develop and and let him be a
number one goalie and then go to him on a
James Bond need to know basis.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
And we've not yet reached that point.

Speaker 6 (10:53):
Now.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
If we're in a playoff spot in February, maybe then.
But then, but then, at that point, why would you
get rid of the goalies who got you there? I mean,
there's any number of things that could happen, But to
do it right now wouldn't be smart. You don't know
for sure that Morrishof's ready right now. The Penguins are
in a bad patch. I would have felt better about
bringing them up when they were eight two and two

(11:14):
and playing great, wouldn't you? At least that way it'd
be in the back of a team that was on
fire now they're not.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (11:22):
I just think is gonna cost us the playoffs, I
really do.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
Yeah, But the playoffs aren't the big picture, BRUV. Building
a championship level team in the long run is a
big picture, and developing morrishoff just right is the biggest
part of that. Thank you for the call. Yeah, I'm
right about this. That said, last night was was bad.

(11:47):
Blowing a three and the lead Toronto after two periods
to lose four to three in regulation in the vacuum.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
It soul crushing.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
But like I keep saying, the Penguins are at a
point developmentally where that's going to happen a case. Yeack,
it happens to every team just about occasionally. Oh there's
a chance lays it off. Yeah, I mean that's the

(12:14):
kind of loss that happens to teams at this point
where the Penguins are going. Like I said, to every
team once in a while, just don't let a trigger
tailspin because it could. But mistakes were made, like Jari
was bad. Playing sid with Gino was a big mistake.
Big mistake not teeing up Kindle when he was the

(12:39):
hot hand on that last power play. Didn't like that?
How do you let Matthews get behind you, a former
sixty goal scorer when you're head three nil. Yeah, mistakes
were made, but the Penguins are far from a finished product,
which disappointing. And I nobody criticizes Sid nor should they.
He's the closest thing to a perfect key player there is,

(13:00):
even age thirty eight. But he got his assignments messed
up after he lost that draw that led to the
first Matthew's goal. You know, it's bad enough when the
kids make mistakes, but you expect that they're kids. In
terms of the veterans, especially the three nail lead, you
want better. And like I keep saying, and I said

(13:22):
this the last how many years with Sullivan, the Penguins
are never good at seeing themselves at.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
One nil, one nil, alf so freaking lutely one nil.
Finally a header.

Speaker 1 (13:33):
Goes past that freaking giraffe tremendous. Couldn't be happier? Where
was I? Where was I? I really do forget uh
the Penguins here I picked it up. Now the Penguins

(13:54):
need and they have trouble with his, as have had
the Steelers for years. They need to see themselves as
they really are. And what they really are isn't what
they used to be. They used to be a team
that when they got a three nil lead, they would
come out, Oh, don't tell me.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
It's off side. They used to be a team that
would lead three nil and extend the lead. Now they're a.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
Team that needs to take a three nil advantage and
grind it out and protect it. And if that's not
what they want to do, that doesn't detract from the
fact it's what they have to do. And if they're
not willing, they're not going to make the playoffs. And
what worries me again, and I've been saying this since

(14:48):
and because of the a two and two start and
the eight game point streak. You, oh, it looks like
it's off sides. F me running It looked on side
to me. But it looks like they're calling off side. Anyway,
what a great goal. God, I hate video review when

(15:09):
it doesn't benefit us. They're a different type of team
and maybe they don't get it. Well, if he's off side,
it's by a fraction. We'll see what they call.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
Okay, let me get to them. I wish like goal goal? Yes, yes, yes,
one nil.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
I wish I could have bet in game and bet
on Alexis mccalvis to score.

Speaker 2 (15:36):
But you can do it.

Slight chance of a rule. Oh money, I can't even
quote the big o'bowski right. Goodbye the ex at one
oh five nine.

Speaker 1 (17:16):
Double im on the X joining me not to tuck
Steelers in the wake of a uneventful trade deadline day.
Well for Pittsburgh anyway. From the Athletic He's Mike de Fable.

Speaker 2 (17:26):
Mike.

Speaker 1 (17:26):
If I'm the Steelers, I'd have made that deal Jacksonville
did for Jacoby Myers, and I might have made that
deal Indy made for Sauce.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
What say you?

Speaker 4 (17:35):
Yeah, I completely agree with you. Mark. The way I
look at this, you know whether the Steelers are right
or wrong. When they went out and they acquired a
thirty one year old Jalen Ramsey, When they gave big
money to a thirty one year old TJ. Watt, When
they kept a thirty six year old Cam Hayward on
their roster, when they brought in a thirty four year
old Darius Lay, when they brought in a forty one
year old Aaron Rodgers. They were trying to win within

(17:56):
a certain window, and the window is now, and you
clearly don't have enough depth and talent at the wide
receiver position, and you're not anywhere close to a good
position to deal with a possible injury to DK Metcalf.
I would have given up as much as a third
round pick to make the trade for a wide receiver.
And even if you bring in a Jacobe Myers, I

(18:16):
understand he's on the last year of his contract. You
can resign him and that answers your question with the
guy's coming off his rookie contract, who's still young, who's
still talented? I personally would have made that move based
on the other moves that they made. If the Steelers
hadn't invested, if the Steelers had turned around and traded
Minka Fitzpatrick for draft capital, if they had brought in

(18:37):
young defensive backs and tried to build for the future.
I would have understood sitting on your hands, But if
you're going to bring in these aging veterans and you're
trying to win within a certain window, I think they
should have been much more aggressive.

Speaker 2 (18:48):
What about the trade for Sauce, like two first round picks.

Speaker 1 (18:52):
I know you want to have a first round pick
when you draft here when the draft comes to Pittsburgh
next year, but I don't know, he's twenty five. You
can keep him forever.

Speaker 4 (19:01):
Yeah, that's a tough one because the only variable there
is I think the Colts were in a position to
make that trade because it sure seems like they're going
to ride with Daniel Jones going forward a quarterback. And
the Steelers, I think, you know, their moves today to
me telegraphed that they're still trying to stockpile draft capital
to move up in the first round and get a
quarterback this year or next year. So you know, I

(19:22):
could go both ways on that. I know that it's
challenging to find a talented defensive back so many guys.
Our teams go out and they spend first round picks
on cornerbacks who just aren't any good. And so if
you get a young, talented guy, I can understand that
even if the price tag is big, it's worth doing it.
But I think if you're in a situation where you
know you need a quarterback, I think that that's a

(19:44):
significant factor in the conversation.

Speaker 1 (19:45):
Well, here's the big thing. I'm shocked the Steelers did nothing.
You know, they got Doug or who cares. It's the
same team and had been Jacksonville and Indy, the LA Chargers.
They all made impact moves. I mean, going on there,
the Steelers say they're all in, but not where I'm standing.

Speaker 4 (20:04):
Yeah, that's a great point, Mark, and I brought that
up to Mike Tomlin in this press conference day last year.
Mike Tomlin described the current state of the trade deadline
as an arms race. All of the good teams make moves,
they just do. And so not only are the Steelers,
you know, right now they're sixth in the AC standing
they would be in a playoff position right now, but

(20:24):
you look around and all the other teams that are
ahead of them got better right now, And what did
the Steelers do to improve? Very little? And so you know,
I agree with you in that regard. Mark that this
is a league that's changing now. If you feel like
you're in a window, you have to mortgage your future
to some degree, or at least be willing to give

(20:45):
up future assets. And the Steelers still are kind of
stuck straddling the line between, you know, holding onto those
future assets and playing for the future, but also saying
that they're trying to win in the current window.

Speaker 1 (20:57):
At the very least, I would have made a better
offer for Myers. I would give him up a third
and a sixth something like that. Now, does getting sauce
make Indy the favorite in the AFC?

Speaker 4 (21:09):
It to me, it all depends on if Daniel Jones
continues to look like you know, the Daniel Jones that
we saw last week, or if he looks like the
version through the first couple of weeks of the season.

Speaker 3 (21:18):
I mean, he looked horrible.

Speaker 4 (21:19):
That was an awful game by a quarterback, so bad
that he Joey Porter Junior had an interception. I mean
we were right to Joey Porter Jr. A guy who
you know, I don't think I've seen him catch any
balls in practice as long as I've covered the team,
so you know, I think that it all hinges on
the quarterback. They're betting by bringing in Toast Gardners that

(21:42):
Daniel Jones is not only going to be there answer
this season but going forward. But you know, I like
that team. I think that they've got a great play
caller in Shane Stike, and he's got a quarterback that
fits his system. And I think that they're going to
win the AFC South, a division that doesn't have that
many real contenders in it, and they should host a player,
and I think that we're gonna be talking about them,

(22:03):
you know, through December and into January.

Speaker 1 (22:05):
It's worth noting that the the LA Chargers, you know,
they lost all off their stud tackle to it knee injury.
They brought in Penning from New Orleans, and that's not
you know, even for even as a replacement Mike, But
I get it, and at least they tried.

Speaker 4 (22:20):
Yeah, they really needed to because they lost both of
their offensive tackles. And looking ahead to this matchup this week,
it looked like a nightmare matchup for the Chargers, just
because the strength of the Steelers right now is their
their edge rushers. That's where they're strongest right now. And
you know, they needed to make a move like that. Also,
you know Harbaugh, going back to his Stanford days, going

(22:43):
back to his days with the San Francisco forty nine ers,
he is big into running the football, and I mean
with Greg Roman as the offensive coordinator, that's such a
staple of what they do. And if you don't have
the horses up front, that whole operation falls apart. So
I think, especially the price tag, I think it was
like a seventh tick, a conditional seventh round pick that
feels like absolutely nothing to give up to improve your

(23:05):
offensive line. I think that was a very prudent move
by the Chargers.

Speaker 2 (23:08):
We're talking to Mike de Faibo. He's brought to this
by Armstrong the Internet.

Speaker 1 (23:11):
You con on the people you trust, that's Armstrong one
Wired dot Com. Mike, looks like Jalen Ramsey's going to
stay at safety at least this week.

Speaker 2 (23:20):
That worked pretty well on Sunday, didn't it.

Speaker 3 (23:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (23:23):
I think he might have to stay there. I mean,
he's thirty one years old, and you know, in his
heart he wants to still be that lockdown guy that
can shadow the opponent's number one wide receiver and shut
them down. Unfortunately, we have enough data points to say
that that's not the case anymore. I mean, Jackson Smith
and Jigba and Cooper Cupp lit him up when they
played the Seahawks. Jamar Chase lit him up when they

(23:46):
played the Bengals. So I think that moving him back
to safety, you know, he's going to have an opportunity
to see the field from a different perspective. I think
he's going to be able to act on his instincts
back there, and it could prolong his career the way
it did with Rod Woodson and a couple other guys.
So I like the move. It's also out of necessity
because you know, jan thorn Hill wasn't really getting a

(24:07):
job done. He was losing playing time. Chuck Clark kind
of is what he is, and so I think it
makes a lot of sense what the Steelers did recently.
They moved to more two high safety structures and in
doing so, it kind of like lessened the burden on
those safeties, and I think that that makes a sense.

(24:27):
It also provides some support for the cornerbacks underneath that
they know that they have two safeties over the top,
they're not going to get burned deep. So I think
that that's going to continue to be part of the
game plan going forward, and I like the move to
move him to safety.

Speaker 1 (24:40):
What was your take on Duggar For a guy who
just showed up and pretty much jumped on the field,
I thought he was pretty impressive and he plays hard.

Speaker 2 (24:47):
Doesn't he?

Speaker 4 (24:48):
Yeah, he does. I think he fits what the Steelers
needed at that position, because when they lost to Sean Elliott,
they lost a physical box safety who can be impactful
against the run, but also has the versatility play post
safety or a half field safety, and so Dugger does
a lot of those same things. You know, he has
a reputation as a big hitter, and I think it

(25:09):
showed a lot that he I mean, I don't think
we we noticed him in any kind of bad way
or in coverage at all. The only play that I
remember him really standing out was when he made a
big tackle and near the line of scrimmage. So I
think that he fits what the Steelers are looking for
and I appreciate it. Afterwards, apparently they gave him a
game ball and we asked him about it, and he
was like, I don't care. That's that's not me. I
don't care about a stupid game ball. I care about

(25:31):
being on a team where I'm getting playing time and
I can make an impact, And I appreciated that sentiment.

Speaker 1 (25:36):
What about that four to three wrinkle the defense used
and they you know, went with different looks on the edge,
different looks with inside backer.

Speaker 2 (25:44):
What was the impact of that? Is that what slowed
Don Taylor?

Speaker 4 (25:49):
I think that that was part of it. And so
what they did was they had a four man front
and three linebacker inside linebackers behind it. And what it
did was it allowed them to put Leek Harrison on
the field. And he is a much more physical, run
stuffing traditional inside linebacker on the field, and so that
gave him a little bit more bulk when they were

(26:10):
in a four down front. But at the same time,
you still were able to keep Peyton Wilson on the field.
And I don't have clarity on this, but I know
when they've done stuff like that in the past sometimes
that the guy that the role that Peyton Wilson was playing,
he's effectively representing his safety in what is kind of
like a big nickel and so you saw him out

(26:30):
like basically a line to like a nickel or like
a slot corner would be including on the play when
he came on the Blitz and Bad of the Past
that was ultimately intercepted by Jack Sawyer. So I think
the benefit of it is you're getting a bigger, more
physical inside linebacker and Malik Harrison on the field, and
so that helps you. But then you also have the
speed in the range and the instincts of Peyton Wilson,

(26:53):
because I like Peyton Wilson as a player, but he
has limitations against the run. He's such an interesting player
because he flashes and he has like he's one of
the fastest players on the field at all time, but
then you put him in a traditional role against the
run on early downs and he's getting out physical. So
it was a way to kind of keep him on
the field get stronger against the run. And I think

(27:16):
they accomplished both things in that game.

Speaker 1 (27:18):
Did watch Stripsack win the game? It looked pretty much
that simple. It was seven to nothing, Indy. They were
driving again. That totally reversed the momentum and dare I
say rattled Indy. I mean, I know they were seven
and one, but that kind of what's the word I'm
looking for.

Speaker 2 (27:32):
It brought them back down. They seem to be flying
and they just got the booboo face.

Speaker 4 (27:38):
Yeah, definitely. I mean like they were about to drive
and go in and score and make it ten to
nothing or fourteen to nothing. And at that point, the
Steelers have been playing from behind. And as much as
Aaron Rodgers has impressed me and outperformed my expectations this year,
I think that the Packers game kind of shows what
happens when the Steelers get down by two possessions and

(27:59):
they become one dimensional and they count only on Aaron Rodgers'
right arm, and so that play completely got the Steelers
back into it. And I don't know what the heck
the Colts were doing on that because they had an
unbalanced line. They only had two offensive linemen to the
right of the center, and then they ended up pulling
the right guard. So it was just a pure one
on one situation for TJ.

Speaker 3 (28:20):
Watt.

Speaker 4 (28:20):
He's gonna win those all the time. And I don't
get it because the smart teams realize if you get
four hands on TJ. Watt, you can pretty much take
them out of the game. And in that situation, the
you know, the Colts decided to gamble a little bit.
They left what one on one and they paid for
it handsomely.

Speaker 1 (28:38):
Why can't the Steelers run the ball and why do
they so quickly abandon it in the last two games.

Speaker 4 (28:43):
Really, you know, it's interesting because it's like this run
game has been so up and down and so jeckle
and hide, and overall it's been poor. You know, you
look at the overall raw stats and they're near the
bottom of the league top three or top five, and
basically any rushing category. And you know, I felt like

(29:04):
they had discovered something with Spencer Anderson as the extra
offensive lineman, and you know, I felt like they needed
that balance to take some pressure off of Rogers. So
you know, I think that throughout the rest of the season,
rediscovering that running game and having that as a reliable
piece of your offense is so important, and beyond just

(29:25):
this year. If the offensive line in the running game
develops this year, I think that that means more than
anything else, because I don't I don't see an incredibly
high ceiling for this team. I don't think they're gonna
win the Super Bowl. But if they develop those offensive
linemen that they've invested so heavily into and they start
being the reason why you're winning games.

Speaker 3 (29:44):
In late November and in December.

Speaker 4 (29:45):
Then you could feel good going into next year that
you have something offensively that you can build upon. But
you know, if that running game continues to regress or
be inconsistent as they've been, you know, where does that
leave you next year when you have question marks about
Israe going to come back? Are you drafting a rookie quarterback?
Are you playing you know, Mason Rudolph or I don't
even know Will Howard at quarterback, Like, you need the

(30:07):
running game to support you next year, and so they
really have to have to recapture what was part of
their identity for you know, a handful of games before
these last couple how.

Speaker 2 (30:18):
Good has Rogers been. He's not been dazzling.

Speaker 1 (30:20):
His numbers aren't great, but I think he's been incredibly
effective at impact moments.

Speaker 4 (30:26):
Yeah, I think you see his impact in a variety
of ways, even subtle things like getting the Steelers into
the correct play or adjusting things at the line of scrimmage.
I think that that's been really big. But I mean, overall,
I'd say he's probably a top fifteen quarterback in the
league this year. And really that's all you were counting on.

(30:49):
If you're the Steelers, He's performed as well or better
than the Steelers could have hoped. And so a big
part of the formula was supposed to be. They were
supposed to play great defense, they were supposed to run
the ball effectively. Rogers was supposed to push them over
the edge. Rogers has done his part. The defense and
the running game have been inconsistent, and so you need
the other parts to perform up to expectations. If Rogers

(31:12):
is going to give you that little jolt that you
need to push you over the top. And I think
that that's really the key factor for the Steelers right
now is if you're listing what is going wrong for
this team or where they have shortcoming, Rogers wouldn't even
be in my top ten right now, and he was
probably my number one biggest concern coming into the season.
I think he's been more than solid in the times,

(31:33):
very good, and so you know, to me, it's about
can they continue to play this style of defense that
we saw on Sunday and can they continue to have
consistent production from the running game.

Speaker 2 (31:48):
Yeah, I agree with all that.

Speaker 1 (31:49):
I think Rogers has actually been the team MVP so
far in a very subtle way, like he just keeps
them together.

Speaker 2 (31:55):
Like there's something about him that.

Speaker 1 (31:57):
Rust didn't have, and I can't put my finger on it,
but it's there.

Speaker 4 (32:02):
It's authenticity. That's what's the difference.

Speaker 10 (32:05):
You know.

Speaker 4 (32:05):
I don't dislike Russell Wilson, like, I mean, he visited
children's hospibles and stuff. He's not a bad guy, but
I think he's in authentic sometimes, and I don't think
that that message resonates with guys, whereas Rogers is just
like he's a straight shooter. I mean, guys mess up
in practice and he just curses them out. And I think,

(32:26):
you know, if you're on a veteran leaden team or
Rogers was on with these guys for a while, maybe
that act would wear a sin. But right now, when
they've got so many guys on rookie contracts and so
many guys who don't know what the heck they're doing,
you know, they're responding to a guy who's a four
time MVP and a Super Bowl champion, and so a
lot of the things that were written about Rogers as

(32:46):
a teammate, you know, the infamous Red Line press conference
with Mike Williams last year that was seen as such
a bad thing. But if you take it and you
translated to Roman Wilson and you see in practice Aaron Rodgers,
you know, detailing exactly how he wants the routes to
be run, in telling Roman you need to be where

(33:07):
I want you to be when I want you to
be there. Roman is responding to that kind of thing,
and it is improving on the practice field. I mean,
I was kind of shocked by his performance because he
probably caught every pass a practice on Thursday. I mean
they were targeting him like every single throw. I thought
he was in line for a big game. So, you know,
I've been very underwhelmed with what we've seen from Roman,

(33:28):
but I think that if he's going to reach his
potential this season, it's going to be because Rogers is
there walking him through each step and pushing him to
get there.

Speaker 2 (33:39):
That was a weird win, wasn't it.

Speaker 1 (33:40):
I Mean, they were worthy winners, but they they Oh
Jesus Christ, this guy made another freakin save another one.
I'm sorry, Mike, this is very distracting. So I'm sure
you can understand. They got six takeaways but only one
by seven. They got out gained badly. Yet I felt
they were never in danger of losing.

Speaker 4 (34:00):
Yeah, that's kind of the way I felt about it too.
It was really a strange game because the first quarter,
I would say, unfolded exactly as I anticipated. The Steelers
offense well, three and out three times after the Colts
had the ball only once during that entire sequence, and
you know, they gave up a long drive, Jonathan Taylor
was running the ball well, and then it all flipped

(34:22):
with that TJ. Watt turnover, and so you know, it's
kind of funny because like the dumbest, simplest, stupidest version
of analysis is to say, if you stop the run,
if you run the ball, and you win the turnover margin,
you're going to win the football game. It's dumb, it's cliche,
it's simple, but it's so true when it comes to

(34:44):
the Steelers. When they stop the run and when they
win the turnover battle, they're a really hard team to beat.
And when they don't get turnovers, you're seeing thirty plus
points and three hundred plus yards in a forty year
old Joe Flacco lighting them up. So Mike Toman called
turnovers the ste with life blood, and I think that
that's really true. I think going forward. They are such

(35:04):
a turnover reliant defense that when they get them, you know,
they look like one of the best defenses in the league,
and when they don't get them, they look like one
of the worst.

Speaker 1 (35:13):
My great stuff, I appreciate you taking a time enjoy
the game this week.

Speaker 2 (35:16):
We'll talk again next week.

We're past the five minutes of stoppage time.

Speaker 1 (37:04):
My advice there has always kicked the ball straight up
in the air, and when it comes down, the game's
usually over. Why yes, yes, one nil, Liverpool over Madrid,
over Madrid, Real Madrid. The whole world was watching the
game and Liverpool win one nil.

Speaker 4 (37:27):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (37:28):
We've been talking all day about these Steelers lack of
doing anything at the trade deadline. I just want to
point out that you talk about being all in, they're
not all in. They just want to make sure they
don't have a losing season to keep coach T's record intact.
LA made a big move, Jacksonville made a big move.

(37:49):
Indy made the biggest move. Everybody got better, not everybody,
but well in Buffalo they didn't. And the Buffalo fans
are bitching. Steeler fans. You should be bitching too, but
you're too stupid. Well, let's ask Mark any Let's go
to Polly PAULI ask Mark anything.

Speaker 7 (38:04):
Hey, Mark, what was your initial reaction when Kiss was
on the Tom Snyder Show and Ace was drunk and
being silly and Peter was laughing with them. But Jeane
and Paul were just sitting there all agitated.

Speaker 1 (38:17):
In some think that was well, they should have been embarrassed.
Ason Peter had personalities. Gene and Paul looked like dinks.
They looked like self important morons sitting in there, in
there kabuki makeup, Ason Peter had a good time. I
was definitely team Ason Peter in that instance, and really
after that, there are a lot of people thought that
that was the beginning of the schism between As and

(38:39):
Peter and Gene and Paul.

Speaker 7 (38:43):
Yeah, I mean, well, I'm not old enough to I wasn't.

Speaker 2 (38:46):
Old enough to be around that time.

Speaker 7 (38:48):
But from what I saw on YouTube, I thought it
was actually pretty funny and just fun to watch. And yeah,
I couldn't see why the older generation Kiss fans seemed
to like Ason Peter more than they do Gene and Paul.

Speaker 1 (39:02):
Oh, no question, and I definitely do. And I thought,
as did the best solo album. Hey, when we were kids,
you picked a favorite member of Kiss, just like the
generation before me picked a favorite member of the Beatles,
and my favorite was Ace Frehley. And uh, and yeah,
I that Thom Snyder thing was just hilarious. It was
really funny. And I remember when Gene thank you for

(39:23):
the call. I remember when Gene Simmons was on the
Mike Douglas Show that used to be a mid day
syndicated talk show which was very popular, and Jean sat
down to be interviewed and Mike Douglas said, what are
you supposed to be? And Gene goes, I am Evil
Incarnates and this comedian of the day, Tody Field, said,

(39:44):
now you're just some Jewish kid from Brooklyn that that's
actually on YouTube somewhere. Let's go to Mater Mater as
mark anything.

Speaker 4 (39:54):
What do you think? What do you think the real
reason is that the Steelers will not move on from Mike?

Speaker 2 (40:00):
Well, I know you think it's raised, don't you.

Speaker 4 (40:04):
I do not. It's questioning because you have ties to Israel.

Speaker 1 (40:09):
Or goodbye, goodbye your pieces crap. No, it's because they
just don't fire their coach. And that's the only reason,
believe me. Let's go to Finnegan. Finn again, you're on
with double m.

Speaker 6 (40:25):
What's your favorite holiday?

Speaker 2 (40:27):
Well, how about you answered that first? Buddy? What's your
favorite holiday?

Speaker 6 (40:31):
My favorite holiday is Halloween.

Speaker 2 (40:33):
Why did you get lots of candy?

Speaker 5 (40:36):
Well?

Speaker 7 (40:37):
I don't give a whole out of this?

Speaker 2 (40:39):
Very cool? What's your favorite candy?

Speaker 10 (40:43):
I guess your little chocolate.

Speaker 2 (40:46):
That's the basis, Finn again, I respect that.

Speaker 1 (40:48):
My favorite holiday is probably Thanksgiving because an old fat
guy like me gets to eat a lot and I
love stuffing. Do you like stuffing? Yeah, well Thanksgiving have
some stuffing for me, buddy. Thanks for the call. Let's
go to David and Washington. David, ask Mark anything?

Speaker 10 (41:05):
Hey, Mark, you talked to Pierre today about young players
making the Canadian the team.

Speaker 4 (41:10):
I wanted to know if you think.

Speaker 10 (41:12):
Can guys like Baguard or Celebrini make the team this
year or they just I.

Speaker 2 (41:16):
Think Celebrini will.

Speaker 1 (41:17):
I think Canada always, like Pierre said, they learned from
the past. I think Celebrini will make it. I don't
think Bdard's good enough, honestly. I think he's been mostly
disappointing for his entire NHL tenure. I agree with that, but.

Speaker 10 (41:31):
I think the way he's playing right now is pretty great.

Speaker 1 (41:35):
I think the way I think the way Madard is
playing currently puts him in with the chance.

Speaker 2 (41:40):
Is that fair to say?

Speaker 4 (41:43):
Yeah, I think so. But I agree with what you
said about Madard.

Speaker 10 (41:46):
I'm just saying this year he looks like he's poised
to break out finally.

Speaker 1 (41:50):
Well, my big worry is that, like the US team
picks Patrick Kane, who ain't that good no more, instead
of Logan Cooley. But I think that's the way that
US team's going to operate. Look at the way Mike
Sullivan operate rated down the stretch with the Penguins, and
he's coaching the US Olympic team.

Speaker 2 (42:05):
Let's go to a.

Speaker 8 (42:06):
Talkback, Hey, Mark, I don't think the Penguins got any
quality shots off at the end of the game when
they pulled with a polie.

Speaker 4 (42:12):
But don't you think they got some really nice passes
in around the perimeter.

Speaker 2 (42:17):
That's sarcastic and funny.

Speaker 1 (42:18):
Hey, you know what, they blew it and it sucks,
but they out played a really good team badly for
two periods and maybe there's something to be said for that,
even if they got no points.

Speaker 2 (42:29):
If you think you can make the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (42:30):
And I'm sure they do think that after the start
they've had, points are the big thing. But there were
some good things from that game. Let's go to another talkback.

Speaker 8 (42:40):
Super genius Eric in Toledo. Hey, I just tuned in,
so if you discussed this at all earlier, I apologize
I missed it. But Roman Wilson already struggled getting on
the field. Do you think his attempted flip and subsequent
fumble cost him maybe a helmet the rest of the season.

Speaker 3 (42:56):
Thanks well.

Speaker 1 (42:57):
Tomlin said today that even though that was horrible ballper detection,
that he thought Roma Wilson's making good progress, but it
wouldn't surprise me if he played less. I don't know
how with that wide receiving corps, you know, with that
with those receivers, I don't know how you don't at
least stress Roma Wilson. But I would have had him
in a bigger role a while ago. All Right, we
