Speaker 1 (00:07):
Joining me now to talk a little bit more football
from the Post Gazette.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
He is Paul Seiss. Paulp.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
I've been bitching all week about the Steelers using basically
seven offensive linemen with Washington at tight end and Spencer
Anderson is the extra tackle. It's prehistoric. What do you
think is it good? Will it beat good teams in
big games? What about a playoff game?
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Well, I think Mark the thing about it is they're
doing everything in her power to make sure that Aaron
Rodgers is still upright when it gets to the end
of the season. So I mean, I don't know that
I love it when they're playing against some of the
some of the high powered quarterbacks that they're gonna have
to see in the playoffs. But in terms of just
(00:49):
trying to maul some teams and and and and you know,
be able to run the football enough that you don't
have Aaron Rodgers taking as many because really the first
couple of weeks of the season, I thought Aaron Rodgers
was probably never gonna make it the week five because
they got hit too much and was getting He was
not just taking hits, he was taking big hits. So
(01:10):
I think, you know, part of what they're trying to
do with the running game is preserve their quarterback. If
that sounds if, if it makes any sense to you,
I think early in the season, I'm actually okay with it.
I really don't know that they have to do a
whole lot more than try and get to the end
of the year with Aaron Rodgers still being able to walk.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
No, I get it, but my point would be that.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
It keeps Aaron Rodgers from being Aaron Rodgers if that's
still possible at forty It eliminates some weaponry. A you
look at Fiarmouth and John who being minimized.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
You're trying to win, not just keep him healthy.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
It reminds me of when Arians his game plan put
Bennett risk, but they won more. I was okay with that,
right and every coordinator after that protected Ben, but they
didn't win as much.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Well, I guess that's a catch twenty two. I think
Aaron Rodgers, like I said, at forty one, forty two
years old. You know, it was a year and a
half ago or whatever it was. Two years ago he
had a major major surgery. He's, you know, not the
most nimble of feet right now. They just can slowly,
but surely build on Aaron Rodgers. But here's the other thing.
(02:24):
I mean, I think that Aaron Rodgers might only have one,
you know, weapon that really scares anybody, and that's dk Metcalp.
So you know, if you want him to start slinging
it around the field, that might be okay, except for
I don't know that they have you know, the personnel
around him to do that. So to me, it feels
like they're just trying to build a little bit at
(02:45):
a time. But I do really believe that they are
trying very hard to make sure that Aaron Rodgers is
healthy and upright for you know, the stretch running the
end of the season.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
And I don't even mind it against Cleveland because it
will help contain Garrett Is coming Sunday. But but again,
when they get the good teams, big games, playoff games,
I think you need to do more than this. Uh
what's your take in that vein Pall on how little
friarm was and Johnna were being underutilized. This offense was
supposed to be about the tight ends first and foremost.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Yeah, I think that's real interesting. But it goes back
to what I said when they got John Smith, and
I said It's interesting. I keep hearing about all the
tight ends that he that that, you know, the Arthur
Smith once, but three of them aren't good blockers. So
(03:44):
if you've got three guys that aren't good blockers, you
know what I mean? Like to me, you're right, it
kind of goes counter to what it is you're trying
to do in the running game with the rest of
your offense. But it also means you probably can't use
those guys.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Here's a crazy stat, Paul. The Steelers running backs are
getting sixty four percent of the offensive touches.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
Is that good or bad?
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Uh? Boy? Probably not. It's probably not ideal. But again,
I think it goes back to what we've talked about
with respect to the uh you know, the receivers they
have and whatnot, and that is those guys I just
don't think they're that good. And so it's you know,
(04:32):
in general, when you see a stat like that, you say, well,
at who's expense, Well, as long as DK metcalf is
getting his touches, I don't know. I mean, throwing the
gagwell seems like just as good of an option as
throwing it to any of the other guys out there
that they have.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
We're talking to Paul's ice to Postcausette here in the
Mark Mann Show, Paul's Worse Cleveland at Flato's gone. Five
rookies of starting, including Gabriela quarterback. Are the Browns moving forward?
Are they just trading?
Speaker 3 (05:04):
I would like to believe for their sake that they're
moving forward on some level. But the problem is it's
the Browns. And the other part of it is they've
so badly mangled the quarterback positions that I cannot imagine that.
(05:24):
You know, it's not that it's gonna turn out okay,
that Dylan Gabriel. I mean, you know, it's the Browns.
You're thinking exactly like I am, which is that he's
going to be a disaster. Suder Sanders is going to
be a disaster, and so all those other rookies that
are playing and playing well, it's gonna be pretty much
useless because they you know, they're on a team that
(05:44):
isn't very good. Dude.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
The Steelers have the AFC North locked up, but three
and one, with the rest of the division in tatters,
not least at the quarterback position, with all those teams
except maybe.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Glee well locked up, is probably a little too strong.
But I mean, Mark, you look at the other three teams,
they all look like they're just not They're not just bad.
They're a total disaster, you know. In the Ravens, I mean, yeah,
Lamar Jackson can come back, but I hope he can
score fifty or sixty points a game for them, because
that defense is ridiculously bad. I'm glad that the Bengals have,
(06:21):
you know, dusted off Joe Flacco to try and you know,
win a game or two. Uh, but it sounds like
Joe Burrow is gonna be out for like eight or
nine games, so you know by the time he gets back,
they'll probably be buried. So basically not locked up. But
it would take in monumental failure on the half of
the steel on behalf of the Steelers for them to
(06:42):
not win the AFC North at this point, because I
look at the Ravens and I think with that defense,
and you know, a couple more weeks of Cooper Rush,
you know, they could be every bit of like one
in six at some point.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
No, I agree with all that, And here's the prediction
I feel safe making. I think the.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
Steelers will have a two game lead in the Division
when they played Baltimore on December seventh, and the week
before when they played Buffalo. I think they'll be in
the hunt for the AFC number one seed overall. Whether
they hold on to either let alone that number one seed,
which I think is a real long shot because of Buffalo,
I don't know, but I think that's how we'll shape
up at that juncture.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Are you buying the Colts at all?
Speaker 2 (07:24):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
I think they'll be in the talk for what I'm
talking about, number one seed then, but I don't know.
I mean, they got the best running back in football
with Taylor and Danny Dimes.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
It's a real renaissance, isn't it. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
I mean I'm looking at their offense and you know,
what's the guy's name, their coach Stech. Yeah, yeah, the
offensive coordinator from the Eagles. I mean to be honest,
if this goes on for another two or three weeks,
if I'm the Giants, I'm firing this. The bull guy
who was supposed to be the offensive guru and everything else,
(07:58):
from the simple fact that he obviously has no idea
how to work with a quarterback. Seeing as the kid
comes to Indianapolis, it looks like a pretty good player.
So I don't know yet if I'm buying the Colts,
but every week I come away from the weekend saying, boy,
they might be the most impressive team in the AFC
right now.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
Paul Quick College Football Talk, what's your take on Penn
State's lost to UCLA and what James Franklin.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
Got to do the rest of the season to keep
his job.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
Well, I mean, I think he'll keep his job. I
mean again, the fifty six million dollars, I don't care
what school you are, and you know, unless you're one
of those Texas schools with oil and gas money, that's
a big buyout. Fifty six million dollars, I think is
what I've read his buyout is. It's interesting. I know
that they appear to be Detton buried, and you know,
(08:50):
you lose a play a listless game against a horrific
team and lose, you know, but if you look at
the rest of their schedule, if they run the table,
they'll be in the playoffs. And I'm not saying they
can beat Ohio State. Maybe they can't even beat Indiana,
but they you know, they win those two games, and
they finished ten and two I'm pretty sure they're gonna
be in the playoff and then pretty much everything else,
(09:12):
you know, goes away. So I think what he needs
to do is win sort of the confidence back of
maybe his players, the fan base, and the administration. But
I mean, I don't see unless they go two and
ten or you know, four and eight, and I don't
think it's gonna even be a discussion to fire. And
they might, they might ask him to make some changes,
(09:35):
you know, on his staff and do all those things.
But to me, I just think that's a really big
buyout to try and fire a guy.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
What about the quarterback, Drew Aller, Do you think he's
still a first round pick? I feel like him in
arts Manning might drop out of the first round, or maybe,
in Manning's case, stay in school another year.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
Yeah, I think Manning should probably stay in school another year.
Drew Llar right now, I don't know that he the
first rounder in anybody's mind. And I also, you know,
one of the things that's interesting is we were told
that they have the two best coordinators in the country,
you know, because they spent all his money on these
two coordinators. And the thing I keep reading is that
(10:13):
a Lar does not fit into the system. And the
kid that they let go to like Missouri or wherever
the hell he went is the guy that probably should
be the the you know him. So it's kind of
interesting because that probably tells me that Drue Law is
probably not going to really fix whatever it is it's
ailing him during the season. But again, with his physical tools,
(10:36):
he could go to the combine and still solidify himself
as a top you know, as a first round pick.
We've seen stranger things.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
What about pitt In this went over Boston College.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
A lot of people are going nuts, just like the
Niver Holstein last year. I like the way this new
kid quarterback, the eighteen year old Heinschel, how he looked.
But all they did was be the craft team, right.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
They'd been a terrible team. And you know, I think
one of the things I'll tell you may Heidchel was
the best quarterback in pitch spring. I wrote about that
several times. He was the best quarterback in training camp,
and actually it wasn't even close. So it's interesting. You know,
(11:18):
they lose a couple of games and all of a sudden,
the guy that they're paying all the money too goes
that goes right, out the window and and and they
you know, because I think that honestly, Pat and Mardosey
was starting to feel a little bit of heat after
losing to West Virginia then blowing that game against Louisville.
You know, at that point it's like, well, I know
that we paid this guy all his money, and we
(11:38):
got a payroll and all this other, but we need
to win. It's just kind of comical to me because
anybody that watched even a little bit of spring and
training camp will tell you the Heinchel Kidd was the
best quarterback in camp and it wasn't even close.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
Paul, great stuff, Thank you so much for taking the time.
We'll talk again real soon.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
All right, thiks Man, talk to you soon.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
That's Paul's eis.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
This segment brought was by eighty four Lumber Dynasty, partner
of the Pittsburgh Steelers. We got more Steelers talk at
the bottom of the hour with Jerry Dulac.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
Get your calls in now.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
It's your first chance of the day really to break
through and talk to the super genius A three three
four one two ninety nine thirty nine eight three three
four one two ninety nine thirty nine.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
It's the OI Show weekday mornings.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
It's always break to hear from the lady callers to
the X.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
At one oh five nine.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
Numb one one the X.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
We got Jerry Douloc talking Steelers to the bottom of
the hour. I think the Steeler are gonna win this game.
I don't think it'll be well, it'll be one score game.
It'll be close till the end, but I don't think
the result will be in doubt. I don't. I do
want to see what happens if the Bronze make Zach
be the number two quarterback and leave Shador at the
(13:03):
emergency spot. What the reaction to that is by ownership,
who clearly wants Shador to play. Maw and Pau sanders Cleveland,
they just can't get away from drama, even when things
are moving, however, slightly in the good direction, what with
five rookies played in, including Dylan Gabriel, who I thought
(13:23):
played just fine despite losing to Minnesota in London last week.
Cleveland's got a good defense, Cleveland's got a lot going
for it, but they just can't get out of their
own way. And like Paul's I said a few moments ago,
you just can't trust him to do the right thing
at quarterback. Look at all the quarterbacks they've used since
since nineteen ninety nine when they came back into the NFL.
(13:45):
I think they've started what over forty quarterbacks in games
since then. And while I do like Dylan Gabriel to
this point, I don't think he's the answer.
Speaker 2 (13:58):
I don't think he's their long term quarterback. Who knows.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
Maybe, But if Cleveland wins like three games this year,
which is what might happen, you know, four or five games,
what if they get a chance to draft one of
those so called stud quarterbacks in the first round. Do
they eschew that and take a player at a different position
and just stick with Dylan Gabriel. It's very early returns
on Dylan gab where you couldn't commit to him one
(14:22):
way or the other in that regard. But they, again,
the Browns can't get out of their own way. I've
been keeping an eye on the baseball playoffs. One thing
you gotta like is the Yankees being out kind of
ignominiously in the division series Toronto. You know, really was
(14:46):
never in danger of losing that series. They win three games.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
To one, and the Yankees.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
You know, with all the national media on their size side.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
This just monstrous.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
Payroll third in the league this year, traditionally top two,
top three, and they haven't won a World Series in
sixteen years. They made one last year but didn't win it.
That's the only time they've made the World Series since
having won it sixteen years ago. You know, their fans
are pissed. The New York media's pissed. You know, good
(15:19):
f the Yankees. I can't stand the Yankees. Same with
the Mets. The Mets said, I think the second highest
payroll in baseball this year and did not even make
the playoffs. Playoffs, But but interesting discussion. I forget who
it was. I had sound, but I didn't play it. It
wasn't that interesting. Oh here it is a Rod and
(15:40):
Derrek Jeter talking on Fox the post game of that
Yankees loss. And they blamed everybody but Aaron Boone. Aaron
Boone's like the whipping boy, the manager for the fans.
They blame him, But you know what they blamed. They
blamed the analytics. They said, Aaron Boone isn't the guy
making the decisions. He gets every decis made for him
(16:01):
by an iPad. I'm just glad to see the Yankees out.

Stammer's host The Brons This coming Sunday at one pm.
Come watch the game with me at Big Fellas and Cannons,
joining me not to talk about it. He covers the
Black and Gold for the Post Gazette. Always great to
talk to. Jerry Dulac, Jerry, how will does Steelers deploy
their secondary without Jalen Ramsey, who's not only their best
d back but kind of a Swiss Army knife.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
A lot kind of revolves around him, doesn't.
Speaker 6 (18:17):
It, Yeah, Mark, because he's able to play three different positions,
and without him, they'll go a little bit more standard
with you know, Warren Thornhill along with Deshaun Elliott, and
then the two cornerbacks are you know, rotate a third
one in there, but you know, Darius Slay and Joey
Porter Jr. So it'll be a little bit more of
(18:39):
a standard defense in the back instead of the varied
looks and groupings that they have when Jalen Ramsey can play,
there's no doubt it'll be you know, it'll be a
little different for him not having Jalen Ramsey.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
Now that said that Steelers defense is kind of running
in the form lately, isn't it?
Speaker 6 (18:59):
Mark Best I seen him play all year. No, I
know that's a low bar. But for three and a
half quarters, they look like what everybody has expected them
to look, including themselves. You know, they dominated Minnesota, held
him the seventy yards rushing, six sacks, thirteen quarterback hits,
two takeaways. That's what they paid all that money for.
(19:22):
With that defense, and so they finally got to got
their money's worth against Minnesota. Now we'll see if that continues,
but there's no doubt that was the best they've looked
all year.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
Has Harmon made a big difference the rookie defensive lineman
since he came back from injury.
Speaker 6 (19:39):
I don't want to say he's made a big difference,
but he certainly has made a difference because one, it
gives him a talented guy up front who both you
know can play the run and rush the passer if
he has to. But there's no doubt having him in
there gives them that extra body to be able to
rotate some of the others.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
I A.
Speaker 6 (20:00):
Black has been a big positive as well. But there's
no question what they see from Derek Carmon is certainly
why they feel they drafted him where they did, and
for just you know, for missing the games that he
did early. He's played very very well and he has
made a difference.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
We got a big matchup Sunday, Jerry between two guys
who will never be on the field together, TJ. Watt
Miles Garrett, two of the very best defensive players in football,
two big money contracts, two edge rushers. Do you think
TJ sees this game is bigger because Miles Garrett's on
the other team.
Speaker 6 (20:33):
I don't think there's any question mark professional athletes when
they you know, and he's been asked about, you know,
in the past, about who should be defensive Player of
the year. When you get those situations, there's no question
about it. As a professional athlete, you want to outperform
the guy to whom you're always kind of compared to
(20:54):
or competing against on the other team. I will say
this with the retirement of Aaron Donald, to me, Miles
Garrett is probably the most disruptive player in the NFL
because of how he plays, where they use them, how
they move them, and you know, his numbers, while they're good,
(21:15):
may not. It's kind of like Aaron Donald. Aaron Donald's
numbers weren't weren't eye popping, but man oh man, the
other teams had to do a lot change their game
plan to account for him always know where he was.
And Miles Garrett is that kind of player in that vein.
Speaker 1 (21:29):
The Steelers have basically lately been using seven offensive linemen
on a lot of snaps what with Spencer Anderson's the
extra tackle and Mount Washington is the tight end. Will
that continue Sunday given the threat of Garrett and how
much does that help in that situation?
Speaker 6 (21:46):
Well, Mark, Yeah, they won't with that heavy package against
the Vikings because of the front that they play, and
I think you can you'll continue to see it. I
don't know that you'll see Spencer Anderson play nineteen snaps again,
and you'll see Darnell Washington play the majority of the steps.
I mean, Pat Fryerman has had fifteen snaps against the Vikings.
(22:09):
He's played fewer snaps so far this year than both
tight ends Johnny Smith and Darnell Washington. I think you'll
see that change against the Browns. You know, they it's
every week market, it's always evolving, and just because what
they did one week was success doesn't mean they won't
replicate it or try to replicate it. But you always
(22:30):
see him adjusting because the other teams start getting you know,
they make changes too to account for what the Steelers did,
you know in the previous game. So we'll see. I
don't think they're going to abandon it because they had
such success running the football with it, and of course
that's what they want to do. Barkers run the football.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
Yeah, and the seven lineman protects Aaron Rodgers too. My
only concern there is it prevents Aaron Rodgers from being
Aaron Rodgers because it depletes his number of targets. And
I just don't think you beat good team in big
games using seven offensive linemen.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
And I don't think he come from behind against anybody.
Speaker 6 (23:06):
Well, that's for sure, Mark, and I agree with you,
And you've heard me say many times. They didn't bring
Aaron Rodgers in to be a mailman. He's a gunslinger,
and so you know, they want somebody to hand the
ball off. They can find a lot of people to
do that. But obviously it goes beyond that. Aaron Rodgers
at the line of scrimmage is the best in the league.
He's seen everything. You see him getting in and out
of not necessarily plays, but formations and routes for his
(23:30):
wide receivers, and he's just so good at it. And so,
but you're right, I think you're going to see a
little bit more friar moooth this week. You know, No,
Calvin Austin, I don't know. We haven't seen a lot
of downfield passing. We haven't seen a lot of dropback
passing if you think about it. From Aaron Rodgers, they
(23:51):
haven't been in the red zone a lot, only thirteen times.
That's the sixth fews in the NFL. Granted they played
one fewer game than twenty eight other teams. When they'd
have been in the red zone, they've been efficient converting
nine times and that's pretty good. I think that's eighth
in the league.
Speaker 1 (24:06):
What about what about John Who? Because John didn't play
much against Minnesota.
Speaker 6 (24:10):
Either, same reason as Friarmuth. They wanted a bigger, bigger
lineup in there. You know, John Who's even smaller than
Pat Friarmuth. I got a kick out of Mike Tumblin
the other day putting Connor Hayward and Pat Friarmuth in
the same sentence in terms of musical stature. In Connor
Haywood's six foot and two thirty, Pat Fryarmuth is sixty
five almost two sixty. I fairly don't think there's a
(24:33):
that's an apt comparison. But John who Smith is even
smaller than that, so that's not what he does well.
But I think they start they're going to need to
start getting those guys, especially Friarmuth involved in the passing
game more, especially without Calvin.
Speaker 1 (24:47):
Austin, with Laren apparently available, who's going to be the
number one backer will be like by committee?
Speaker 6 (24:53):
Yeah, it's not even enough for debate Mark Jalen Warren
as they're running back. But what we have seen all along,
even when Jaylen Warren is healthy, Kenny Gainwell plays a
lot and he will continue to play a lot. He
certainly showed last week what he can do. They they
kind of knew that. I always liked him when he
was with the Eagles, Mark, and but I don't think
(25:14):
anything he did last week is going to change the
pecking order. I really don't know that it's going to
amount to more snaps for game. Well, maybe a few,
but he's been playing a lot anyhow, even when Jalen
Warren's been healthy. So you know, we'll see, but there's
no question it might be more instead of number one
(25:34):
and number two. Maybe it gets more to what we
saw the last couple of years with Najie Harrison, Warren
one and one A.
Speaker 2 (25:43):
The running backs have sixty four percent of the offensive touches.
I'm not sure what that means. Jarre, what do you think.
Speaker 6 (25:50):
Yeah, I'm not sure what it means either, but what
it does mean is that's kind of how they you know,
they don't want Aaron Rodgers is certainly at least right
now throwing thirty five to forty times a game. I
think in the opener mark right, he threw thirty three
times and he was sacked four times, So that's thirty
seven dropbacks.
Speaker 3 (26:08):
I don't think they really.
Speaker 6 (26:09):
Want to play like that, even though he played very well,
very productive, had four touchdown throws, and so I think
they've tried to develop the run game, get you know,
be able to use play action, even though we saw
play action work again in New York took perfection even
though they couldn't run the ball. But it's something that
(26:31):
Aaron Rodgers does very well. But I just think it's
a byproduct of kind of how they want to start
the season to get that running game going, and we
saw a little evidence of that last week. Obviously, one
hundred and thirty one yards not bad.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
Where's Cleveland at Flacko's gone?
Speaker 1 (26:47):
Five workers are starting, including Dylan Gabriel quarterback. Are the
Browns moving forward or just moving deck chairs around on
the Titanic mark?
Speaker 6 (26:57):
That's what they are, you know they and that's you know,
it's a firm Denaley d Are depending on which is
the most dysfunctional franchise in the National Football League. And
it's hard for me to say they have a plan
because I don't think they ever have a plan. It's
why they flounder around the way they do year after year.
(27:17):
Even when they had something going with Baker Mayfield, they
tried to move away from him and bring into Shaun
Watson and that's just blown up in their face. So
they bring in two veteran quarterbacks. They trade for Kenny Pickett,
they bring in Joe Flacco, and now they're going to
go into a regular season NFL game with two rookie
quarterbacks who have never won a game. And you know,
(27:38):
to me now that Deshaun Watson could come back this year,
that's a possibility. But while the Bengals make a move
to get a veteran, which tells you they probably think
they can still be in the race, when the Browns
do what they do, that tells me then you know
that they don't have a plan to stay in a race.
They're just going to stockpile some picks and tried play
(28:00):
for another year. But they do that all the time, Mark,
and it never works out. And that's not starts at
the very top of the organization.
Speaker 1 (28:07):
It strikes me that their owner wants Shedor to play
because he's clearing the path for it by trading Flaco.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
The coach doesn't.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
And there's even a report Jerry that with the Flacco gun,
Bailey Zappi might be the number two quarterback in Shador
still might be the third string.
Speaker 6 (28:23):
Well that's possible, but again that could be up to
the owner because it appears that he's calling the shots.
Stefanski did not even know that Flacco was going to
be traded, and so you can see where that's coming from.
It's the same reason they drafted Shador Sanders. That was
not the coach or the GM, that was the owner
telling them what to do. And so but it depends, Mark,
(28:46):
if you elevate a player, elevate not sign them, elevate
a player from the practice squad. I'm still trying to
get this determined from the league, to get some clarity
whether he has to be the number two if he's elevated,
or you know, he can be the third quarterback if
you But if you sign him to the active roster,
then you could designate them to be whatever you want.
(29:07):
But if he's merely elevated, I think I think he
has to be the number two quarterback.
Speaker 1 (29:14):
A lot of people were saying the Steelers have the
AFC North locked up, but I bet they do lead
it by the time they played Baltimore on December seventh,
which may or may not be a key game.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
What do you think, how sikuur are they?
Speaker 1 (29:24):
Because I know they are only three and one jerion
and they are not without flaw, but the division is
in shambles.
Speaker 6 (29:32):
Yeah, Mark, you know, I went back and look, it's
the first time since Bill Kauer was coached in nineteen
ninety two that the Steelers have led the division after
five weeks and the other three teams in the division
were under five hundreds. Never happened before, And not that
that's a historic, significant moment or occasion, but I think
what it points up is the Steelers have built themselves
(29:54):
a nice little advantage. But Mark, way too early. A
couple of things. The schedule's been easier, it gets harder.
The Ravens are playing the hardest schedule started the schedule
in the league. The Rams this week are the fifth
twenty twenty four playoff team, they will have already faced theirners,
schedule will get easier, and we know the Steelers history
in December. Does that mean it's going to repeat. No,
(30:16):
but for the last six years we've seen them have
three game losing streaks in December.
Speaker 3 (30:20):
So it's a.
Speaker 6 (30:21):
Long way to go. They have a nice two and
a half game lead on on the Ravens, which is
what interests them the most, but long way to go. Mark.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
I think the Steelers win Sunday Jarre, how about you?
Speaker 1 (30:33):
But I bet it's a one score game because I
feel like that's what Tomlin wants every week.
Speaker 2 (30:37):
And I bet it's a rock fight.
Speaker 6 (30:41):
Yeah, I think it's gonna be a low scoring game, Mark,
And hey, look it could be one score. I have
it like at twenty three twenty three ten, and I
think is what I said. But you know, we're seeing
the offense, you know, unlike last year, start quick and
when they have to finish strong, they have it's and
in between, you know where they haven't performed very well.
(31:05):
They haven't run a lot of offensive plays. Mark. They're
averaging like fifty two plays. The opponent's averaging like sixty six. Now,
part of that is a byproduct of the defense, but
those plays were inflated last week by those last two series.
But I think after after what we saw in Ireland,
the way the defense played and the offense being you know,
(31:26):
fairly efficient, especially in the red zone. Uh, you know,
I think it's gonna be more than a one score game.
But Mark, it's the NFL. We see it every week.
Who knows what can happen.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
Jerry, great stuff, Thank you for taking your time.
Speaker 6 (31:38):
We'll do it again next week always, Mark, good chat

Speaker 6 (33:23):
Hey, Mark, I was wondering at home when you're doing
your work, like, what.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
Kind of setup do you have?
Speaker 3 (33:28):
Do you just have a laptop, a tipwriter?
Speaker 1 (33:31):
What do you do you mean when I prepare my
notes for the show, yeah, or writing well and I'm
doing my call for the trip I have a laptop
on my kitchen table.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
Because my kitchen's very well lit.
Speaker 1 (33:44):
I feel comfortable there easy access to everything to eat
or drink, So I write it on a laptop in
my kitchen. For my show, my notes are almost exclusively handwritten.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
If I'm working at.
Speaker 1 (33:57):
Home, I'm generally sitting in my big easy chair watching TV.
He kind of his background music, background noise, whatever you
describe it as.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
And I make my notes with paper on a clipboard.
Speaker 3 (34:12):
Gotcha, thank you?
Speaker 1 (34:13):
Okay, if you're inspired by that, you're a less Serman
than I would hope you are.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
Let's go to a talkback.
Speaker 1 (34:20):
Hey, Mark or Ryan Graves ever play another game in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
Again, that's a good question.
Speaker 1 (34:28):
Obviously signed Graves to a contract that was too much
and for too long. He's in Wilkes, having cleared waivers.
He could be called back up christin Jarry was last year.
But my hunch is no. My hunch is they've turned
the page on that. And I gotta be honest, I
think Graves is a gutless wonder. I think when challenged
to improve, he he turned tail and fled even this
(34:51):
year in a more systematic system, a defensive way. Of
playing that Dann mws is trying to install. It should
have been fitted him. He should have looked better in
camp than he did than under the Celly system, which
did not fit him well with all the pinching and
all the activating. But again, Graves didn't rise to the
challenge of camp or in the exhibition game. So I think,
(35:13):
barring emergency, he will not play another game here in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 7 (35:18):
Let's go to a talkback kid, I said, Virginias, I'm
just wondering what your thoughts are about Tarantino bringing out
the whole Killed Bill saga two parts in the one
four hour feature length movie for a couple of extra
bits cheer man.
Speaker 2 (35:35):
Yeah, I think that's overkill. I'm really not that interested.
I mean, are Tarantino's movies overkill in the first place,
too long? I mean they're good, but no, I'm not interested.
Speaker 1 (35:46):
And the Kill Bill, I'm not sure that was his
better work those two movies. The first one was okay,
second one, and I did like when the girl got
buried alive though, that was that was a pretty good scene.
Speaker 2 (36:00):
Let's go to Mike. Mike, you're on with double M.
Speaker 6 (36:04):
Hey, Mark, thanks for the call, Hey, When do you
think the NHL started going like softer with like hitting
and all that stuff.
Speaker 1 (36:13):
I think, as in with almost any UH sports league,
including the NFL, especially perhaps the NFL, once the players
get really highly paid, I think that the league will
take more precaution to make sure those highly paid players
don't get hurt.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
Don't you think that's a big part of it?
Speaker 6 (36:33):
Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
And I don't.
Speaker 1 (36:35):
Think the NFL is necessarily sissified, that it's pusillanimous by
any means. I just think it's faster. I don't think
faster and softer are the same thing. I think it's
more faster than softer.
Speaker 6 (36:49):
Agreed, I understand that.
Speaker 1 (36:51):
And I and I hate and I hate the fighting.
I always have hated the fighting. There's no place for
the fighting, right. It's neanderthal and it's stupid. Let's go
to Tom.
Speaker 3 (36:59):
Tom.
Speaker 2 (36:59):
You're all with Mark.
Speaker 6 (37:02):
Hey, Mark, Yes, Tom Selik here with some gun suppressors.
I thought you might be interested in buying.
Speaker 1 (37:09):
Yeah, this isn't funny. I know you're thinking it's funny.
Just won't be so I'm gonna get ready. And you
didn't sound at all like Tom Selick. So let's go
to a talkback.
Speaker 4 (37:19):
I'm just curious if you could only pick one more
protein to eat for the rest of your life, whether
that's beef, chicken, pork, you know whatever, which one would
you pick?
Speaker 2 (37:32):
Thanks, that's actually a real good question.
Speaker 1 (37:35):
What protein if I could pick to eat for the
rest of my life would I pick. Wouldn't be chicken,
even though I eat a lot of chicken, wouldn't be pork,
even though I like pulled pork. So that's down to
beef or fish. I really like fish, but you know,
I'd go with beef. I'd go with prime rip. But boy,
I miss fish. I miss fish more than chicken. And
(37:57):
I don't really fish that often, but I really like
it when I do. I say it like whether it's
salmon or halibut, even the occasional swordfish, shrimp, and boy,
there's a wider selection of taste if you would stick
with seafood over beef.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
But no, I'm gonna stick with beef.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
These line open four one two, excuse me, eight three
to three, four one two ninety nine thirty And by
the way, to get back to the question, the guy
asked yesterday, I gave the wrong answer. He asked me,
if I could interview any athlete I have an interviewed,
who would it be? And I think I said Gretzki.
I definitely said Dan Marino. You know it would be
no contest. Number one uber Alis Steven Gerrard, former Liverpool captain,
(38:41):
one of my three favorite athletes ever with Sid and Mario,
no doubt about that. If I could interview Steven Gerard,
that would be a real thrill for me. I'm not
even sure I could get through it, and even over
the phone, I'd be just incredibly starstruck. So number one
athlete to interview of all time, at least Stephen Gerard,
