Speaker 1 (00:00):
Pre store incredible last night, Alice Cooper due, but I
also managed to watch some of the baseball playoffs. Three
of the series are going to a third game today,
Detroit and Cleveland playing right now. Boston and the Yankees
tonight will be epic classic. The one series that's over

(00:23):
is LA wipeots Cincinnati ten five and eight four. LA
can mash If the Pirates had LA's bats, well, LA
would still be better. Let me play Devil's advocate right now.
We talk about how Cincinnati the organization wants to win,

(00:44):
and they do want to win, and they made the
playoffs this year. We talk about how Cincinnati has a
better organization than the Pirates and they do better draft,
better developed priorities, better everything. But all Cincinnati got for

(01:05):
being better was demolished two straight games in the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Just say it.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
A lot of local angles for these playoffs. Mason Miller
of San Diego Bethel Park High School.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
He's pitched two winnings for.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
The Pods, six up, six strikeouts, and he threw one
hundred and four point five mile per hours one or
four point five, fastest pitch ever in postseason history, one
hundred and four point five and the difference between him

(01:47):
and O'Neil Cruz is it actually accomplished something and you
got Bednor. David Bedner, God bless you. David Bedner got
to say for the Yankees staved off elimination in the
Yankee Stadium against the hated rival. David Bedner did that.

(02:11):
I'm psyched because ax buck b from Mars and see,
all things being equal, I'm gonna root for the guy
who looks the most like me. And now today jameson
Tyle on the X Bucko on the hill in Game
three for the Cups. You look at ex Pirates in

(02:33):
these playoffs and you realize the Pirates don't stink. They
just stink when they're here. I'd listened to B Team
today their callers. I wish they'd call this show their
callers about the Pirates so I could just grab them
by the anus and turn them inside out because they're
so dumb. Everyone's accusing me guy today. All they need

(02:59):
to do is sign Suarez and Grisham. Yeah, okay, how
many times does stuff like that have to not happen
before you adults realize it's never going to happen. And
even if Nutting did want to pay him. Why in
the frig would those two guys want to come here.

(03:22):
You know what's gonna happen this offseason. They're gonna trade
Mitch Keller. That's gonna be the big move. They're gonna
get small potatoes for him. But they'll say they fixed it,
and a lot of you dopes will believe them. Certainly
that dope who wanted them to get Suaz and Grisham
gonna believe it. Let's not bring on Tommy Radio. Tom
how about Mason Miller? Six up, six strikeouts, one hundred

(03:47):
and four point five miles per hour.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
He's just nails and Mark. I know that the Padres,
when they traded for him at this deadline from the
A's were still toying with the notion of maybe converting
him back to a starter.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Well they might, yet do I don't think you should.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
I think that dude is just such an absolute weapon
out of the pen. And he's unique for a bullpen
arm because he's got that starter ability. So he can
go like two or three innings if he has to.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Yeah, but he keep in the bullpen. They'll they'll get
away from.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
That, you think. So he'll just become that meat and
potatoes closer three three.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
Well, that's how they're using him in these playoffs.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Except for the last game. He pitches what two innings?

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Right?

Speaker 3 (04:23):
Six? Strikeouts?

Speaker 2 (04:24):
No? No, I think it's one inning each game strikeouts.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
The game yesterday he pitched at least more than one inning.
I think it was one in two thirds, and he
struck out every single batter that he faced. And I
just like the ability to unleash somebody like that in
the middle of a game, towards the end of a game.
So I don't know if I would be gung ho
saying Mason Miller, you should be our closer, or excuse me,

(04:48):
you should be a starter and be part of our rotation. Plus,
I don't know if you can gas it at a
one hundred and four miles per hour as consistently as
he does. If you're a starter, you're gonna have to
take that off a little bit.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Yeah, but what would you want to do if you're him,
Because starters where the money.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
Is, starter, you gotta be a starter too, Starters where
the glam is as well. And I bet he views
himself as.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
Far Yeah, no, you're right, he but an ending in
two thirds yesterday struck out. Everybody struck out five. That's
five for five. I got that wrong, Shame on me.
And then the day before that one inning, three strike,
So he's faced eight batters and struck all.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Of them out. It'll be tough, and the only way
I wouldn't be impressed is if you were pitching against
the Pirates.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
It'd be a really tough sell to have me put
him into my rotation. But maybe you can, and maybe
he'd be a great starter as well. But wow, one
hundred and four miles per hour? What do you think
that batter was like when he saw that go by half?

Speaker 1 (05:38):
This?

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Half this?

Speaker 1 (05:41):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (05:41):
You gotta like Bedner and tie.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
On Loo could good in the postseason, and it's a
chance they don't get here. We got sound from tie
On where he talks about you know, you dream of
being in a situation like.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
This with the Pirates. You can't dare dream that it's
not gonna happen.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
And I think, once you've been here a while and
realize that, like I keep saying with Reynolds and Kellber,
it beats you do emotionally.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
Do you think Bedner could have ever imagined in April
of this year, when he was sent down to Indianapolis.
That this is where he'd be right now in October,
closing out the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium in a
do or die Game two to get it to game three.
And he's coming out to renegade Mark. That's the power
behind him, Is they really?

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yes? I didn't know that.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
He's coming out to renegade. That's why he's so great.
Bring a little Pittsburgh to New York.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
No, the reason why he's so great is because he
has a double chin and sweats like a pack horse.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
He's one of us. By that, I mean, not you me.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
He's so badass too. I mean the paint ninety nine
ninety seven miles per hour against the Red Sox last night.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
It was awesome. Now, do you get my point about
the Rams?

Speaker 1 (06:41):
All they got for their trouble and being a better
organization is slaughtered two games in the playoffs, in and
out right away?

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Yeah, but I want that trouble. If you're a small
market team like that, you at least gotta enter the
arena right and see if you can get lucky a little.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
I do too, because the fun isn't those two games. Obviously,
The fun is the race us to make it like
you know, we always talk about how the Steelers never
play a game that's meaningless.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Well, nor did the Reds this year.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
Pirates have something that the Reds don't have though, where
Hunter Green's good at the top of the Reds rotation.
But Paul Skeens is the best pitcher in baseball. So
you have a puncher's chance in the wild Card round
if you get in, even if you're an eighty three
win Pirates team.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Now LA is just a juggernaut.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
They had pitching injuries, but they might not even need
pitching because the Dodgers can mash.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
They might score eight, nine ten runs every game.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
They have Lake Snell, and he's one of the best
pitchers in baseball top ten pitchers, So that's good at
the top. A Tawnis start in Game one of the
NLDS against the Philly y'all Momoto pitched yesterday, Right, he's
really good, too good? Yeah, those three might just be enough.
Now a Tawani, that's an interesting one. He could be
really great. What kind of average? What about Kershaw? Do
you think they'll go to him? Maybe like for one

(07:50):
spot start, maybe like four or five innings. You almost
would have to because he wasn't bad this year, like
his era was under four.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Yeah, he's at the bottom of their rotation.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
Yeah yeah, but boy to clip him out of the
starts totally in the postseason when he's done so much.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
I mean, but.

Speaker 3 (08:06):
Remember he's not that good in the playoffs, like that's
kind of been his bugaboo.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
No, if you do it, I get it.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
It's kinda it's like benching the long time hero at
the very end, I bet, which sometimes is the right
move and probably is here.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
I bet you he gets a start, though I bet
you he'll be put on the mound. Try to get
at least three or four really solid innings out of him.
They are just a juggernaut though they might just score
nine to ten runs a game, and it doesn't matter
if the pitching staff gives up five or six.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
Now, Tom, who were you rooting for? Because here's who
I got. I hate the Cups. I want the Cubs
to lose, even though Tye on starting Game three today.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
I wish they had never won that World Series.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
I like them being the lovable losers because to my mind,
the emphasis was on being losers. I will watch the
red Socks and Yankees game three tonight. If Benner gets in,
I want him to win or get a save, and
I don't know who to root. Four In Game three
between Cleveland and Detroit, Cleveland's right up the road. Them
doing well pisses pirate fans off, yes, but but I

(09:06):
like seeing scoopball pitch of Detroit gets through.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
I think I'm gonna go with Cleveland in that game, though,
and see if they can try to break thicker. That's
the I think it's the most well known active curse
right now in baseball. Is Cleveland have won since nineteen
forty eight, So that's a cool angle. Plus the movie
Major League. I know they're not the Indians anymore, but
still I kind of like that running parallel.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
You know what's weird.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
I was listening to National talk radio and a couple hosts,
a couple of callers, even though they're the Guardians now
refer to them and slang as the tribe.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
I wonder if it's still Popua.

Speaker 1 (09:37):
I'm one of its kind of back doorway to give
a nod to them having been the Indians.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
I bet it is. And watching those games the past
couple of days, Mark Chief Waho is still very present
in that crowd. I mean, he's on hats, he's on jerseys, like.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
Well, that was the only thing that was racist, calling
them the Indians. I had no problem with them being
the Indians, but the wa who was over the top.
The only offensive name was the Washington football team. That's
the only one they should have left everything else as was.

Speaker 3 (10:02):
As far as I'm rooting for, probably leaning towards the
Seattle Mariners haven't won before. I went to a game
in Seattle when I was on my honeymoon out in
the West Coast too, so that was cool to see
a Mariner's game at that stadium there. Yes she did go.
I dragged her to the ballpark. I like seeing ex
Buccos do well because it makes me laugh seeing them

(10:23):
go on to other places and be big time contributors,
not just you know, some guy like Kibrian Hayes, just
some guy who got a couple of that bats. Like
the other guys were talking about, are big time. Chapman
falls into that category. Two, and look out for ikf
in the Blue Jays. With the Blue Jays coming up,
I bet you he has a big moment for them,
and I guarantee you Quinn Priester has a big start
for the Brewers.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
Well, it goes to show that these aren't bad players.

Speaker 1 (10:46):
And if you had all these players still here in
a group, it'd be a good team. But they never
have enough good guys at one time because you got
to spend to do that.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
And this isn't something new. I mean, this happens almost
every postseason. Charlie Morton go out there and in postseasons
the past couple of years, Hoo's a batista. I mean,
the list goes on and there's a.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Great story some ex pirate prospect, like he was a
non roster invitee one year. He said that the Pirates
don't even give any team apparel to non roster guys.
They're gonna come up with their own stuff. And like
he asked the clubhous guy for hoodie and the guy
just said no, just said no, And Charlie Morton came
over and gave him one of his.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
Well good for a ground chuck, it's a class move.
Guys like Morton Burnett, like Morton left this organization went elsewhere.
Like they have to just look back and be like
what an absolute joke this place is.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
Well, look a look.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
At IKF last year. I remember the quote from him
which didn't get enough play. Nothing is like I thought.

Speaker 2 (11:43):
It would be.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
Yeah, and how happy do you think he is to
be playing Division Series baseball now? Probably at the bottom
of the Blue Jays order.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
Who do you think the player was that gave Noah
Hiles those off the record quotes that disparaged the organization?

Speaker 3 (11:55):
We were speculating about that a little bit, And you're right.
It has to be somebody who's been beaten down.

Speaker 1 (11:59):
It has to be a good player, Yeah, because a
guy who wouldn't be here if the pirates weren't bad
would never say that. A guy who gets a job
only because he's low budgeting not very good. I would
say Reynolds or Keller.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
Yeah, those seem to be the obvious choices, just beaten
down by the mediocrity. The less the mediocrity of.

Speaker 1 (12:15):
This O'Neil Cruz because he's been here like what a decade,
still can't speak English.

Speaker 3 (12:18):
Very And I don't even think he cares, I really don't.
I just think he's happy to be there.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
You know what, he's gonna care when he gets stuck
to him an arbitration.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
One point two million or something like that, something like that, Yeah, yeah,
there's the Pirates. I actually had submit under a million,
I'd be like, you gotta hit two hundred and.

Speaker 1 (12:34):
Then when he gets to low where I'd say, where
are your miles per hour?

Speaker 2 (12:37):
Now? Priest five ninety.

Speaker 1 (12:39):

Speaker 1 (13:19):
X double one on the ex Shador Sanders did like
a very immature mime routine when he just asked when
he got asked about the Cleveland quarterback situation, which is
Joe Flacco being benched in uh, Dylan Gabriel, not Chador Sanders,

(13:42):
but the third round pick starting and not the fifth
dround pick, which by the way, makes perfect sense. So
Shador did a routine he thought was funny.

Speaker 2 (13:51):
You saw it.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
It's all over the place, and it was kind of funny,
but it wasn't well received. Part of the problem is
he's a fifth round pick in a third street quarterback,
and the media still talks to them all the time.
You're in a position like that where you're you're trying
to shake off your rep for potentially being a distraction.

(14:13):
You just shouldn't do something like that. It was dumb.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
Tom.

Speaker 1 (14:16):
I'm not blaming the media, but in terms of the scrutiny,
I will say Shador Senters is in kind of a
tough spot.

Speaker 3 (14:22):
Ye, it's so bizarre to see a third string quarterback,
you know, people kind of rush to him to find
out what his reaction is to the news other than
Dylan Gabriel, Right, Like, doesn't it feel like people are
more interested in what Shador has to say about this
as opposed to the guy who's actually gonna start and
playing the game. And I'm sure they talked to Gabriel,
but it's not making you know, headlines, is not going
viral like Shador did.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
What's your gut feel for how Dylan Gabriel does.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
It's a tough first start against Minnesota, that flores defense
at London. But I don't believe Cleveland made this decision.
Likely they probably see something to go to Gabriel this early.

Speaker 3 (14:58):
I bet you Gabriel surprises a lot of people. I
don't think Gabriel's going to be a star in the NFL,
but I bet you he's a really solid quarterback. Maybe
a high end backup is a ceiling, but I think
he's gonna do just fine. Like I think he's going
to not shy away from the big moment. He's gonna
use his legs when he has to and get out
of trouble. And I think he's gonna be really conservative,
not turn the ball over. Flaka was turning the ball

(15:19):
over too much. I think that probably fueled it. I
think they think Gabriel will be good at you know,
not risking it too much.

Speaker 2 (15:24):
Now, do you think Sanders will start any games this year?

Speaker 1 (15:27):
I do, because I don't see Cleveland going back to
Flacco to start.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
I think he's the veteran backup period.

Speaker 1 (15:35):
Now, I think that Gabriel, you know, he might get hurt,
might falter in a game. And I think they need
to find out about both Gabriel and Sanders Tom because
they're good very easily probably will almost certainly you're gonna
finish low enough to get a very high pick in
a draft lousy with.

Speaker 3 (15:53):
Quarterbacks unless they find out something about Gabriel here that
they don't need to open the box of shdoor Sanders
and see what's inside that they might just be good enough.

Speaker 1 (16:02):
Gabriel could just go out there and take playing off
and even keep it for next year.

Speaker 3 (16:06):
And here here's the thing, Mark, like, what if Gabriel
is I'm not gonna say he's a phenom, but what
if he is really good in this crap division. I mean,
they're not dead if they go beat the Vikings.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
That's why they're making.

Speaker 3 (16:18):
This move, because this is it for them. This is
kind of their fine.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
I know, I don't know if it's it, but they
see the divisions wide open.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
It's so wide open.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
So they beat the Vikings and then they come to
Akrosher two and three.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
It gets a little bit more interesting, especially with that defense,
which is in every category except for funny enough points
per game because they've been blown out a couple of times.
They're great as far as yards allowed, they sack the
quarterback like they're an elite defense. They just give a
lot of points.

Speaker 2 (16:40):
Well.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
See, this is where the Steelers could learn a lesson
from the Brons, because with the division wide open, the
Brons are taking a risk with Gabriel that could produce,
you know, an upside. He could go out there and
while everybody he's obviously talented, and obviously you knew what
you had with flak Goo.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
You saw what you had with Flacco. It wasn't good
to be enough.

Speaker 1 (17:02):
So this is risk that it probably won't reap enough reward,
but it might. That's why the Steelers, despite his faux
pa against Seattle and the kickoff, should give Caleb Johnson
a bunch of carries.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
He's big, he's a better fit for the offense.

Speaker 1 (17:18):
The Steelers right now, they're I don't know that they're
better than we expected. The division is a lot worse
than we expected, but I still don't think they win
a playoff game as assembled as deployed.

Speaker 3 (17:31):
So with the division being so crappy and it almost
falling into their lap after four games, so that they're
out to a great lead. Isn't this where you should
really get aggressive on that trade market? And I'm not saying,
you know, I heard a rumor about this guy and
that guy, and wide receiver to this and wide receiver that,
But go out and get somebody like that just not good,
I know. And isn't it frustrating as hell because that's
what you should do as a team.

Speaker 2 (17:52):
Suarez and Grisham, Oh no, that's the Pirates.

Speaker 3 (17:55):
In their position, especially with the Austin injury. Now you
have no excuse to not be that aggressive and go
for it because it's it's presenting itself for you to
go out and get it.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
But you're right, they're going to sit on their hands.

Speaker 3 (18:07):
They're gonna talk it themselves into the Miller, Skoronic and
Wilson thing until Calvin Austin comes back, and they'll just
continue to risk dk me. Is he the guy who
jumps in front of everybody else and becomes the wide
receiver too in Austin's absence?

Speaker 2 (18:22):
Probably I have it either him or Miller.

Speaker 1 (18:25):
They just like him because he's a gutsy old school guy. Yeah,
and this is one of the few teams left where
being a gutsy old school guy matters like like it does.

Speaker 3 (18:34):
I think it matters other teams. It's just not as
glorified as it is here. Like on other teams, you
still need guys like Skornic. They help their glue guys
for sure, but that just gets glorified to some crazy
level here. I bet it's Miller or Scornic though. They
just don't like Roman Wilson for whatever reason. And this
is gonna prove it. When Austin's out for the Cleveland
game and Roman Wilson is still getting out snapped by

(18:55):
the Miller's and the Scronics, that proves that. I don't
know if it's doghouse, but there's just something about him
that they just do not like.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
I wonder why.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
I don't know what it could be. He's a third
round pick and they've just kind of decided to forget
him because because it's not leaking out Caleb Johnson, forget him.

Speaker 1 (19:10):
They make up their minds on guys and right away
just freeze them out.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
And I think you're right.

Speaker 1 (19:14):
I think I think Roman Wilson's definitely in that group,
and I think Caleb Johnson might already.

Speaker 2 (19:20):
Be, which is ridiculous.

Speaker 3 (19:21):
He's trending action.

Speaker 1 (19:22):
Where that's ridiculous is you're writing off third round picks,
which actually makes you seem like an idiot for taking
them in the third round.

Speaker 2 (19:31):
But nobody bothers to point that out.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
Like you were forced to take Caleb Johnson.

Speaker 2 (19:34):
I don't blame Roman Wilson for not playing.

Speaker 1 (19:36):
I don't blame Caleb Johnson for not playing, you know,
I blame him for that that kickoff ou pah. But
it's their fault for taking these guys in the third
round if they're not good enough.

Speaker 3 (19:46):
And I've heard so many people Matt Williamson included say
Caleb Johnson's m O in Iowa was third fourth quarter,
like he would get going as the game goes on. Yeah,
getting carries, get him carries, he'd wear that defense down.
How the hell are you ever gonna get to that
point if you just don't give him carries?

Speaker 1 (20:02):
You know, we need to get on the show after
the baseball season. David Bedner, Oh, yeah, I ran into
his mom and dad. I love you right well, they
said they did, But then again, I tried to get
ahold of them to get David's number.

Speaker 2 (20:13):
They didn't get back about him.

Speaker 1 (20:15):
Yeah, but would would love to have him on, especially
now that he's not a pirate.

Speaker 3 (20:18):
And he's told you I think before that he listens,
right or you've heard from told him that he listens.

Speaker 2 (20:23):
Yeah, yeah, so we need to get him on.

Speaker 3 (20:26):
Do you think he'd be more willing now that he's
not a pirate? Yeah, absolutely, because it'll be fun.

Speaker 1 (20:30):
Absolutely, I think that that pirate. I think there's probably
a bunch of pirates that listen to this show and
would come on. Agree with what you say, I have
to but like well like aayj aj Burnett wanted to
come on and we got him not going through the
channels of the club.

Speaker 2 (20:45):
Same with Tony.

Speaker 3 (20:46):
Watson because they were fans of the show. He never
said that loud, but they listened. It was like when
I talked to aj all come on any time whoever
talked to No Hiles, whoever that anonymous player was, even
if they don't listen to you agrees with your takes.
Because they basically spit him out at no Ohio. We
need to get no to tell us who that is
so we can call it.

Speaker 1 (21:05):
So we can get him on. Yeah, there you go,
good thinking, good thinking. We're gonna talk a little Penguins
in the next segment. But how about Brian Rust already
oft for a couple of weeks with the lower body injury.

Speaker 3 (21:18):
I couldn't believe it when I saw it, Like I
saw Josh getzof tweet out the line combinations today and
I didn't see Russ And then I had to do
some more digging and find that out, and I was
just like it always happens.

Speaker 1 (21:26):
It does look like Coyvenan is gonna be on Sid's
line with it would be anyway like the line had
been Sid, Rust and coyven In and now Rakel just jumps.

Speaker 3 (21:35):
Off the slider, Kel up in the said spot.

Speaker 2 (21:37):
Which is what you should do.

Speaker 3 (21:38):
It's not the worst thing ever that rust is going
to be out to start the season. That takes away
from them having a hot start potential having a hot start.

Speaker 1 (21:45):
Well, it reminds me that even though I think Rusty's
been a great, you know, servant to the cause here
and represented the logo, well, he gets hurt a lot
lot and they should have traded him in the offseason.

Speaker 2 (21:55):
That's what it reminds me. Uh yeah, I will talk
a little.

Speaker 1 (21:59):
Penguins up next, cut a bunch of scrubs like some
guy named Scooter Brunick or something like that, Scooter Bricky.

Speaker 2 (22:05):
I don't know who cares Scooter.

Speaker 1 (22:07):
If I if I were doing what I call him
and look your cut, we really didn't pay attention.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
Now you played your cut because your name is Scooter.

Speaker 1 (22:14):
One OX the only show weekday mornings at six wherever
you are and totally free on the iHeartRadio app one.

Speaker 3 (22:24):
This is Will Howard with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Speaker 2 (22:27):
It's the mark Man Free Game Show one DX.

Speaker 1 (22:34):
Pregame Show brought to us by Shnderov and Shandrov's and Fisherman,
the personal injury Experts. They got your back, nut your wallet.
I gotta get a plug in. My buddy Red Beach,
White Steak and Winger. He's got his solo band at
Jurgles tomorrow nights and uh not sure if I'm going
or not.

Speaker 2 (22:50):
Penguin's Final Exhibition. That's a tough heat. But I don't know.
I'm leaning toward Reb. But you should go see Reb.

Speaker 1 (22:59):
John Bell from Gene the Werewolf on vocals just it's great.
They play Winger White Snake, Classic Rockets. They're gonna do
living after midnight. They do it all the time, which
you just heard at the open of the show with
Priest who were great at Start at Starlight last night.

Speaker 2 (23:14):
My Starlink experience, Tom, wasn't that terrible?

Speaker 1 (23:17):
Uh? I got a good parking spot in the VIP
parking The gate that I didn't get into the last
time was open this time. The people in the VIP section,
like the club, are very nice all the time. And
I actually Alice's last song was Schools Out, so I
got up to the top of the section when it
was ending. In the minute en I just flew out
of there, so I got out pretty quickly.

Speaker 3 (23:38):
It's a great feeling walking past all those cars right
and just getting into yours and just driving right up
the road. But the staff was nice to you, because
that was the big problem last time too. It wasn't
the VIP staff. The VIP staff has always been as
all of them. It was the other staff that was
giving you stick. Remember you were trying to get out
and in and they were like giving you a hard time.

Speaker 2 (23:55):
Yeah, the one like they had a teenage kid looked
like when to fight me.

Speaker 3 (23:59):
Maybe he did want to fight.

Speaker 1 (24:00):
Yep, he wouldn't be the last. But no, it was
a good time. Although you know what two people did.
Tom asked to take a photo during music. Okay, one guy,
I said, wait till the concert, wait till they wait
till between acts, and then got one guy wanted to
do it.

Speaker 2 (24:17):
Drink alice. I just said not now. That's always it
was not now.

Speaker 3 (24:20):
That seems like you give him one, like you could
get one where I'm just gonna be really direct and
stern and say not now. But if you do it
one more time, it's nuclear.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
Well the guy.

Speaker 1 (24:28):
The guy came back the first guy between between shows,
I said, oh my god, listen, I go. It's it's
two things. One, I come here to see hear the
music and everybody should know that by now. And the
second is we were I was in front of the stage, right,
that's really disrespectful to the artist.

Speaker 3 (24:45):
Yeah, you take a selfie right now while they're trying
to break into lune like halferd's like fifteen feet away
and the dink's taking a selfie with me or wanted
to weird just social behavior to do that because you're
there too, as the person who's hunting for the selfie.
I assume to see Judas Priests and to see the band.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
Yeah, I was very impressed by both bands. I'll talk
more about that later, but setlist was kind of weird.
Priest did not play Uh green Man at Leashi, which
might be my all time favorite pre song.

Speaker 2 (25:11):
They didn't play Heading On Onto the Highway.

Speaker 1 (25:14):
Alice didn't play Elected, maybe because who got elected? You know,
but that was that was shocking, but small complaints. I
I always say, they don't have to play what I want.
They're not a jukebox.

Speaker 2 (25:26):
But it was. It was really really good.

Speaker 3 (25:28):
So Alice closed the schools out. What did Judas close with.

Speaker 1 (25:31):
Uh Living after Midnight? Yeah you have to because that's
the big sing along too. Yeah, but no, it was.
It was definitely like and like Priest, like they're all
old men, but they still look the part. They do
the weather.

Speaker 2 (25:43):
Yeah, Alford rode the motorcycle out.

Speaker 1 (25:46):
For the encore, just like you know, and Alice does
the he gets beheaded, you know, he brings, he brings,
he brings the dummy of the woman out for Cold Athlo,
which is about necrophilia. I mean, it's just he's still
Alice and one good thing about Alice is you know,
the makeup and the and the that doesn't age. He

(26:07):
still kind of looks like he did back when.

Speaker 3 (26:09):
Yeah, he kind of looked like Wrinkley in Wayne's World
all the way back when he had that cameo in
that movie. The kind of had an aged face. Breaking
the Law is one of the best songs out.

Speaker 1 (26:18):
Oh more, the hockey coach just just texted, uh, I
didn't realize this. It's only the second time he didn't
see him play Billion Dollar Babies, Alice Cooper, you.

Speaker 2 (26:26):
Got a billion dollar baby? Why? Well, sometimes you want
to change it up for yourself too.

Speaker 1 (26:33):
Getting bored with it, Priest concentrated on Painkiller, one of
their albums. They played a lot off Painkiller. By the way,
one reason I glad we're talking about this and we'll
talk more about it later. I got a really nasty
email from some guys said, you should be talking about music.

Speaker 2 (26:47):
Stick to sports. Yeah, stick to my paid buddy. Here's
your music talk for you.

Speaker 3 (26:51):
That's like, you know, when you're getting bullied, or if
someone gives you a nickname that you don't like and
you immediately tell him that you don't like it, and
then it just sticks that's what these people do when
they give you that kind of that's like I don't
like the way you're doing something.

Speaker 2 (27:02):
I didn't really like it that much either, but now
I love it.

Speaker 1 (27:04):
Like George stands with Coco. He wanted to be called
t Boone, but they called him Coco, Coco the Monkey.
But here's here's the here's a priest story from the
first time I saw them, and it involves my friend
George Schuster, who was a hockey player for North Catholic,
who who passed away not too long ago.

Speaker 2 (27:20):
So I kind of like bring it up because I
think of George and.

Speaker 1 (27:23):
Uh and uh uh there's a great story involving George.

Speaker 2 (27:27):
I'll tell you off the air.

Speaker 1 (27:29):
It doesn't reflect poorly on him, but we saw something
reflected poorly on those involved. Anyway, there's about seven or
eight people from Mexica. I know what he's talking about.

Speaker 2 (27:40):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (27:40):
We went to see uh Priest headlining on British Steel
White Snake. First time saw a White Snake and Iron
Maiden with the original singer Paul Deano. So at that
time Priest hadn't broken through except with what was on
British Steel, and Uh it was a it was a
long It was a long concert. I might have been high,

(28:02):
George might have been high. And we want to see
White Steak primarily right who were great? That was like
the bluesy version with John Lord. I'm really screwing that guy.
Now I'm going into details of what White Steak sounded
like in nineteen eighty. But so so we decided, okay,
we're going to stay for Priest. But the two songs
we really wanted to hear were Living After Midnight, which

(28:24):
was the single off British Steel and heading on out
to the Highway. First two songs outs nice and I
feel bad because I now that I really love Priest,
like I've seen them like fifteen times. I feel bad.
I feel bad. That's like, like, you know, another one
of my concert confessions.

Speaker 2 (28:43):
I have two more. I think I've said them both
on the air.

Speaker 1 (28:45):
But I only saw the original Leonard Skinnered once and
that was when I was in high school and I
got blasted and didn't remember any of it and the
plane crashed. That was my only chance to see Leonard Skinnered.
And since then I have not drank or anything session
excess yeah before concert, so I couldn't remember and I

(29:07):
just got over my third bout of COVID. Have I
ever said I had COVID three times? I think I
mentioned that. I think so I know I've mentioned I
had it. So I got over my third bound of
COVID and I went to see Joe Walsh open for
Tom Petty. And I love Joe Walsh, I like Tom Petty,
I like Joe waltsh better. And I was feeling really sick,
and I've seen Tom Petty before.

Speaker 2 (29:27):
I felt really ill.

Speaker 1 (29:28):
After Joe Walsh I left and then Tom Petty passed away.

Speaker 2 (29:31):
Oh to see Tom.

Speaker 3 (29:32):
Those are two really rough ones that you got. I
lived with Mark, Oh.

Speaker 1 (29:35):
I've seen I well, the worst one is skinnered. I'd
seen I had seen Petty before. Yeah, okay, but been
skinnered just like, Oh, that's like.

Speaker 3 (29:43):
That being said. Those don't fit this circumstance. But the
thing you mentioned before about Judas Priest does when you
get the excuse to leave something early, like a big
event early, and get out of there, and you kind
of did this at Starlake a little bit too last night,
that's the best feeling to me. It has to happen organically,
Like I don't go to events and hunt out the
early ag it, but like when it when the opportunity arises,
like a football team's getting blown out or something, you'd

(30:04):
be like, let's get out of it.

Speaker 2 (30:05):
But here's the thing.

Speaker 1 (30:06):
I hold music so dear that I hate to leave
while they're playing.

Speaker 3 (30:12):
I think it's disrespectful.

Speaker 2 (30:14):
Yeah, a little bit, a little bit so.

Speaker 1 (30:16):
But like I said, Alice was done when I turned
my back on the stage and started walking.

Speaker 3 (30:20):
She was just the first one to start walking.

Speaker 2 (30:22):
Yeah, exactly right.

Speaker 3 (30:23):
Did they play an encore?

Speaker 2 (30:25):
No, it's funny.

Speaker 1 (30:26):
Priest left the stage and played an encore coming back
to Alice just finished Alice.

Speaker 2 (30:31):
Alice did the gimmick where what song is? Oi? Women bleed?
He stabs the I think his wife.

Speaker 1 (30:38):
Plays the roles he stabbed, stabs, he stabs the girl
who comes out, and then the the police arrest him
and drag him off and they behead him, maybehead him
the other side stage, and then uh, the band does
like a brief instrumental. Then Alice comes back for schools out.
So I guess that is kind of.

Speaker 3 (30:52):
A kind of a little encore. Feed my Frankenstein. Did
he play that?

Speaker 4 (30:55):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (30:55):
Yes, yes? Uh. Nita Strass the lady guitar player they
have was awesome. She is just awesome. She's so good.
But but then again, everyone in their band is great.

Speaker 3 (31:05):
Sounded awesome.

Speaker 2 (31:06):
Yeah, yeah it was. It was one of the best
signing bands I've heard a long time. Uh all right.

Speaker 1 (31:12):
We did an entire segment on music. So I wish
I had that guy's name because f you.

Speaker 2 (31:17):
That was for you. One oh five nine The.

Speaker 3 (31:19):
X from the Dollar Energy Fund Weather Center.

Speaker 4 (31:22):
This report is sponsored by McVeigh Plumbing, Heating and Cooling.

Speaker 5 (31:26):
It's gotta be another nice day, Sonny. A few more
clouds this afternoon, though him. Seventy five partley cloudy tonight,
dropping the fifty one party cloudy to start today tomorrow
that mostly sunny tomorrow afternoon look for him.

Speaker 4 (31:37):
Seventy eight Noises from sink drains, quads and odors can
be a sign you have a problem in your sewer
line called the sewer and Draine experts at McVeigh Plumbing Heating,
and nine the X.

Speaker 1 (31:50):
Double one on the X we got boots you on
a three thirty to look at the NHL season. Penn
has made a few cuts today, just a bunch of scrubs.

Speaker 2 (32:00):
Tom It was the guy's.

Speaker 3 (32:01):
Name, Oh, Scooter brun Brinki Bricky.

Speaker 1 (32:06):
Yeah, he just got cut because his name is Scooter.
That's a terrible thing to say. But they turned him
out right right. They didn't even send him to wil
because Okay, and like we mentioned Brian Rustott for two
weeks with the lower body injury, Jack Saint Ivany the defenseman,
not six weeks with the lower body injury. Though I
don't think he makes it anyway. I mean, they have

(32:26):
so many right handed defenseman. Uh.

Speaker 2 (32:29):
Still no word on Brunick or Morris show.

Speaker 1 (32:32):
I think they're gonna keep Brunick for the nine games
that you're allowed before you either have to return him
to Junior eight or keep him period and see how
that goes.

Speaker 3 (32:42):
Who's he played for?

Speaker 2 (32:43):
Though?

Speaker 3 (32:44):
Who's he played for?

Speaker 2 (32:44):
Though?

Speaker 3 (32:45):
In those nine games?

Speaker 2 (32:46):
Pittsburgh?

Speaker 3 (32:47):
No, I'm saying, like dumba Carlson, like, who's.

Speaker 2 (32:49):
He If you're not married to lefty righty.

Speaker 3 (32:51):
Then he can just go on a pair with one
of those.

Speaker 1 (32:53):
Yes, the Tan could play left Okay, it's pretty good
at that actional Okay, then so I you know, it's
it's not like.

Speaker 2 (32:58):
Sully where he's we're muses married to that.

Speaker 1 (33:02):
But you only wrote an article about how the younger
players are out shining the veterans, and how Ryan Grace
was lazy on a goal against last night in the
preseason game. And the cuts, the big ones, you know,
the ones we all knew were made today. The other
ones will be made. I guess tomorrow morning, maybe tonight.
The last preseason game is tomorrow, and that's usually a
dress rehearsal for the opener.

Speaker 2 (33:23):
Which is Tuesday.

Speaker 1 (33:24):
Come watch that game at New York Rangers with me
at the Pittsburgh Brewing Company in Creighton. Got a couple
of jerseys to give away, a whole bunch of free stuff,
puck drops in eight.

Speaker 2 (33:35):
I'll be there at seven. Now.

Speaker 1 (33:39):
I would keep kids, give it a choice with veterans.
I would keep kids over veterans, but not Morrishaw for sure.
And I still would return brunic because I think, well,
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (33:52):
If you keep it for.

Speaker 1 (33:53):
Nine games, you get a better feel how the team
is then whether it's worth keeping. But there might be
two right now, righty pears, look at this list of defenseman.
Sally would turn over his grave if he was dead,
But the graves thing is worth discussing because Graves is
soft in the first place, no physicality to him. If
he's in the tank and not trying, it should be

(34:15):
no problem to even waive him.

Speaker 2 (34:17):
I agree, you want to get their shoot a host.

Speaker 3 (34:21):
I agree. And as Yowe pointed out, and you've been
to some preseason or seen some preseason, like everybody's saying
that the young players are playing better than the older ones.
And Dubas said when this all started, when he had
his training camp opening press conference, if that was the
case and the young players were pushing the veterans, the
youth was gonna get the preference. Well, let's see if
that actually it plays out that way, because that has

(34:42):
happened throughout the preseason in camp. So does he defer
to that youth in in certain areas like Brunick, you
gotta do what's best for him long term. Mushoff, do
what's best for him long term. But like guys like
bros like put them on the roster, have them make
the Penguins. What's the point of having some bummy Achari.

Speaker 1 (34:57):
When Moorshoff is ready to play in the lead, when
he's truly ready, whenever that is, because it gotta be
organic gotta be when it actually is appropriate. He will
get them in the playoffs earlier than people think.

Speaker 2 (35:10):
He's that good.

Speaker 3 (35:12):
You said yesterday we were talking about him. If the
team was just a little bit further along in their
rebuild and their defense was better, he'd be ready. Now
he should play in the NHL. Now he should make
the team and be the starter.

Speaker 1 (35:20):
You know what'd be a weird circumstance if they're in
a playoffs plot halfway through?

Speaker 3 (35:24):
Do you call him up?

Speaker 1 (35:25):
Then you'd be tempted to, like stick with the guys
who got you unexpectedly in a playoffs plot halfway through,
But you might be tempted to to call him up
and just drive the nail. And if it's important to
you to make the playoffs, which it shouldn't be.

Speaker 3 (35:38):
Yeah, but if you're already that deep, you know what
I mean, Like, you're gonna finish in the mushy middle
at worst. So why not pull the trigger and bring
him up like some stud prospect?

Speaker 1 (35:46):
Depends how he's playing. Yeah, and it might not be
good in the locker room because no matter what, uh,
no matter how bad we know Jari is, they love
him right.

Speaker 2 (36:02):
They think he's good. I forgot that trifecta, didn't I
you did? Sorry, Well, go ahead, what's trifecta?

Speaker 3 (36:08):
Well, it's gonna take a sharp left turn into Steelers time, of.

Speaker 1 (36:11):
Course, by Danny's peaching Hogies Pittsburgh's original of hn bake
Togy since nineteen sixty.

Speaker 2 (36:16):
That's on Route eighty eight and Bethel Park.

Speaker 3 (36:18):
I have three Steelers here, Mark that absolutely need to
start playing more. Number three, I'll jump on the game
train with you and go with Kenneth Gainwell. I don't
think Jaylen Warren shouldn't play at all, but let's flip
the rotation right. It's been Warren leading it and then
Gainwell as the kind of relief. Let's flip that. Let's
have game.

Speaker 1 (36:32):
But they're both third don Max. I talked before about
how it'd give Caleb Johnson more carries.

Speaker 3 (36:36):
Probably that's the best case scenario, but right now they're
not going to do that. So Gainwell shown the most
to be in the lead back. Number two, I'm gonna
go with Nick Herbig. He's just flat out better than
Alex high Smith. He should play more than Alex Higsmith.
I think they should play all three of the ed
Rushers a lot when they're all healthy, but her Big
should get the first crack at things. He should be
the starter when games happened like he proved that he's
good enough against the run, and he's a far better

(36:58):
pass rusher I think than Alex Highsmith. So Herbig deserves
more snaps. But number one mark is Darnell Washington. I
don't know if you've seen these splits yet, but someone
put together when he plays over forty offensive snaps in
his Steelers career, the team six and oh, they average
one hundred and twenty five rushing yards per those games.
They have seven rushing touchdowns, and they're two and zero
against Baltimore. In those circumstances, that's a good sample size.

(37:21):
You run the ball when Darnell plays a lot, why
not do it?

Speaker 1 (37:24):
Stats like that could be misleading, though, Tom, because Darnell
played that much because the situation dictated what the other team, you.

Speaker 3 (37:31):
Know, might be weak against the defense, right So, but
I would still throw him out there against teams that
are good against the run.

Speaker 1 (37:36):
And Washington played really well and a lot against Minnesota,
but I expect him to play a lot less this week.
I think Friarmouth and I hate John who get back
in the swing. Well, no, it depends again. I'm talking
about next week against Cleveland, the next run Steelers. But
you know, it's what the situation with the opposition dictate.

Speaker 3 (37:54):
I okay, I feel you on that. And Cleveland's a
much better run defense than the Vikings. Cleveland's a really
good defense. But it worked so well, why would you
abandon it? It reminds me of Russ just taking the reins
against the Bengals and then you put the clamps on them.

Speaker 1 (38:07):
As because the thing they did was Spencer Anderson too. Yes,
were they basically the jumbo lineup in there? Do you
think that beats a good team in a playoff game?

Speaker 3 (38:17):
Not in a playoff game, but it beats the Browns
next week beats the Bengals without their quarterbave it again.

Speaker 1 (38:22):
I said earlier that I would give Caleb Johnson the
ball more in terms of gambling, taking risk, maybe producing
a reward that makes your team better. Okay, why do
that jumbo stuff all the time if you can't use
it in the playoffs because the minute you get behind
you can't use it.

Speaker 3 (38:38):
You can't use it the minute you get behind by
two scores, they're not gonna win a playoff game regardless, though,
are they Like even if they get away from the
jumbo package and can run.

Speaker 2 (38:47):
The ball, if they win the division, they could win
a playoffs.

Speaker 3 (38:49):
And they get a home game.

Speaker 2 (38:50):
And right now they're in the driver's season.

Speaker 3 (38:52):
It's the same thing we were at last year, though
we were in the same spot. It's a little bit
better for them this year though, because of the Lamar
injury and the Burrow injury. But we were saying the
same time. Play this week Houston at home. They're underdogs
at home. I bet you they beat the Texans. I
bet you they bounces.

Speaker 2 (39:04):
Texans're okay.

Speaker 3 (39:06):
Now, Baltimore's defense is awful, so maybe the Houston can score.

Speaker 2 (39:09):
But Strouds doesn't look good. You know what, I can
easily see happening.

Speaker 1 (39:12):
Though, Steelers win the division, play Baltimore in the first round, lose.

Speaker 2 (39:16):
Yep, yep, yep. Couldn't you?

Speaker 3 (39:18):
Absolutely I could. Baltimore is not bad. People that think
Baltimore's bad or some terrible team, I think they're sorely mistaken.
They have a lot of injury luck, and they lost
to really good teams. I mean the Buffalo game. Yeah,
they collapsed at the end, but they lost by one
point to a team that might be the best team
in the NFL. Like Baltimore is still a better team
than the Steelers. The Steelers might just get lucky and
beat Baltimore. Anyway, I still think Baltimore has the best

(39:40):
roster in football.

Speaker 1 (39:41):
They might just a lot of injuries, especially defense in
just a couple bad games.

Speaker 3 (39:45):
And Lamar's outstanding. Like he has ten touchdowns and one
interception this year. He's the best quarterback statistically in football.

Speaker 2 (39:50):
Who's their backup?

Speaker 3 (39:52):
Cooper Rush?

Speaker 2 (39:52):
Oh, the Dallas guy, Cooper Rush. He'll be used.

Speaker 3 (39:55):
They're gonna hand the ball off the Henry fifty times
and that's just gonna be theirm and they'll win the game.

Speaker 2 (40:00):
Henry fumbled away a couple.

Speaker 1 (40:01):
Games, right, Yeah, but that's a fluke, I know, but
it goes to show you how tenuous even then being
one in three is.

Speaker 3 (40:08):
That's a great point. Yes, if he doesn't fumble in
those two of those games, they probably win. They definitely
win the Bills game.

Speaker 1 (40:13):
Oh, we overreact everybody's record this time of year, because
that's the business we've chosen. Like it's a long four
hours and like I watch ESPN, like get up and

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
