Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Mark Maddon Show. You can follow me
on Twitter at Mark MADDENX. Like, like I said, there's
almost too much to talk about. This just is really
Craig Cray with the Steelers, Like the kids say, do
they still say that?

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Or was that a generation back? I lose track.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
The ESPN narrative is that Tomlin is not at fault.
Rex Ryan said today the Steelers would do him a
favor by firing him, because you'd get another job in
five minutes. Yeah, maybe with the New York Football Giants,
where Tomlin would be further exposed as the absolute fraud
he's already revealed himself to be. But that's the ESPN narrative.

(00:42):
Don't blame coach t he's a great coach. And then
you've got Patrick Queen and Trey Essex skirmishing on Twitter
trade leinses at four point thirty, Essex said, Queen isn't
a Steeler linebacker in the mould of Farrier Timmins, et cetera.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Which Queen isn't.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Queen fired back, calling Essex a backup and no All
Pros and no Pro.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Bowls, blah blah blah.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Okay, but Tray Essex started for the Steelers in the
Super Bowl. Trey Essex won two rings. Yo, Patrick, Queen,
That's what counts around here, Not what you did at
Baltimore when you were rogue Coontsmiths Caddie, when you wrote
his back to make it second team All Pro. What

(01:29):
counts around here, or rather what used to con around here,
is winning Super Bowls. I was gonna say Queen isn't
a Steeler, but actually he's very typical of the current Steelers.
He's fragile and petty and a deucebag. Him firing back

(01:55):
at Trey Aessex on Twitter after they got killed by
Buffalo is just indicative of the flawed culture with these
Pittsburgh Steelers.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Uh, we got some Penguins developments.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
They caught up Rutger McGroarty in Boco Imama for tonight's
game at Philadelphia.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
Boco of course a tough guy. That kind of makes sense.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
What makes even more sense is the third line going
to be the kid line of McGroarty kindle a coivenin.
I seem to recall suggesting that some weeks ago, so
it was said, so it will come to pass. Joining
me now is Tommy Radio Tom They booed renegade, which

(02:46):
I get because uugh sticks.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
But wow, that felt like rock bottom.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
It really did. And I don't even know why you
would play renegade, Like you got to read the room
a little bit there, right, and just not go with
the renegade thing. It kind of is indicative of the Steelers,
just you know, we're going through the motions here, right, like, Hey,
this is just what we do here. Everybody enjoys a
good time out of the ball game, and we play
renegade because that's the marquimo.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
But they didn't seem to be enjoying it. And they
were chanting fire Tomlin as well. That scoop and score
for Buffalo to begin the second half. You could see
the life rush out of the Steelers, probably the stadium too.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yeah, And I just don't know how they are so
easily pushed to the edge and then pushed over the
edge of you. As you've noted, they're so weak. There's
no bounce back with them. If one thing goes wrong,
they let the second thing go wrong, and the third
thing go wrong, and the fourth thing go wrong. With
minimal resistance this year, and Mike Tomlin has faded in
years past. It's not a new thing this year as

(03:44):
far as his staleness and his effectiveness as a head coach.
But as you said, rock Bottom, it's never felt this
bad where it's just like one thing goes wrong and
it's over already.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
In the weird one is there's six and six and
still tyr. But no, their collapse is easy to explain.
Like the great Terry Funklin said, there are a bunch
of heartless jackasses, that's what they are. Uh, should Rogers
be playing? I think that's a legitimate debate. I think
he's too limited and skittish with that broken wrist. Now
will that improve a lot in a week?

Speaker 2 (04:13):
I do not know.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
There's talk he may be able to take snaps under
center at Baltimore.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Okay, that was an bold face lie on Friday, right
when Mike Tomlin said that he could take snaps under center,
Remember that when he talked to the media, But we
couldn't get anybody from the media to say they saw
an actual snap under center. Well, fast forward to the
game and he very clearly could not do it. Well,
that's shocking Tomlin lie to the media. That is really
maybe the main reason why I wouldn't have played Rogers
if you can't get under center, if you're not effective
of taking a snap, nothing's gonna work in this offense.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
You know, it is funny, except it's sad. It's very
clear that Tomlin wants no part of committing to Rudolph,
no matter how temporary or how brief, because, like you know,
he got in there through one pick right back out. Okay,
put the one armed guy back in.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
But still at the same time, and I I agree
with you, it's weird that he is so resistant to Mason. Rudolph.
Mason is doing himself no favors there. I mean, what
a terrible throw. I mean, come on, man.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
He played no worse than Rogers.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
Okay, he had one pass, he threw an interception.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
He still played.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
No.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Rodgers was awful. I agree they're both bad. I think
they're both bad quarterbacks right now.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
I take the only logical thing to do is to
play Will Howard. That's the logical answer. You don't think
that might not happen. I'm aware that it very well
played Duc in twenty nineteen over Rudolph. He could play
Howard over Rudolph this year.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
I'm not saying that it can't happen, but it's not
a logical move. But I also think that Rudolph isn't
that great either. Rogers has one hand. If I had
to choose who to start in Baltimore, I'd still start
Mason Rudolph. I don't think he gives you that greade
of a chance. I don't think they'll let him give
you that great of a chance. But that's probably where
I live.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
I'd rather start Rudolph one hundred percent than Rodgers or
whatever percent he is. And I think that got born
out yesterday. Like you said, Rudolph only through the one
pass was awful, blah blah blah. But Rogers just can't
play like he is, like with that injury.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
Now he could a broken nose too, right, I mean,
I don't think it's officially a broken nose, but Bosa just.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
Destroyed about How about when he was sitting on the sidelines,
like when the offense was off the field, which was
most of the time, because then only hit the ball
for eighteen.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Minutes, he just looked beat, didn't.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
He literally and figurative.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
He looked like he looked like a kid waiting for
the bus in the snow, and he didn't know that
it was a snow day and the bus was never coming.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
That's a great analogy. That was the hardest he's been
hit this year, right, Bosa from that blind side, And
I think so by the way, Mason McCormick, I mean,
good lord, buddy, what a terrible effort that was. Bosa
gets around you then you kind of just see him
kind of watching as Bosa crunches his quarterback into the ground.
But I think that was kind of an eye opening
moment for Rogers, like, oh, this really hurts.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Why couldn't the Steelers defense stop the run.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
Cook is a good back, but the backup Bulls are
rushed for sixty two yards and both their starting tackles
were out.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
I don't like to just pin it on Derek Harmon
being out, but I definitely think that that had an
effect on it because what I think the Bills were
able to do without Harmon just being in there to
clog up kind of the middle of the line, you know,
eat up some of the blocks.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
I think it took away any fear factor in running
the ball, not.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
Just that the guards in the interior of the Bills
offensive line were able to get to the second level.
We're able to get onto Peyton Wilson. We're able to
get on to Patrick Queen before Queen got hurt and
left the game. And those guys just can't get off
blocks when it's linemen. They're just not good at it.
As far as you know, shedding a block and then
pursuing a tackle is not Wilson's strength. It's not Queen strength.
Harrison's okay at it, but I mean still, it's a

(07:32):
lineman on a linebacker. There was just no resistance up front.
You get into that second level as an offensive line,
and it's easy Pickens.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
I think they should have not traded George Pickens. You
wouldn't have been used right here. I know right I
haven't mentioned that. That's Tom off from Martin Man. We
come back more Steeler angst, and I want your Steeler
ranks when we do calls on the fifteens. The New
York Times ran a little brief in the notes Collu
on the Athletic about calls on the fifteens.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
Tom.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
They said, this segment is so fetch nine X. I'm
excited about the kid line tonight, Tom Cyven and McGroarty

(08:21):
and Kindle. I'n't been this excited since then. Was that
never stopped, Never stopping the pop Star movie? Or was
it Kid Contact? Who are the three guys the Style Boys?
The Style Boys, Yeah, remember their names off the top
of my head. But when they reunited, that was the
last time you were this excited. The DJ was Kid
Contact when they.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
Went to that farm and finally got over all their
problems because Kid Contact was growing weed on the farm.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Right No, No, kid no? The other that.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Is the other guy, right, smart one, The smart one
was growing the weed on the farm.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
R Right now.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
It's gonna drive me crazy. What the Style Boys' names are?

Speaker 3 (09:02):
Connor for reel?

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Is the o Connor?

Speaker 1 (09:04):
It was Kid Connor, Kid Connor, kid Contact, kid.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
Brain, kid Brain, Yeah brain, that's right.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
I'm a style boy for life, that's right.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
I forgot that he was Kid Connor and then he
evolved into Connor for real when he went solo. People
don't watch that movie like they should. So underrated.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
It's a new generation's spinal tap, not as good, right,
But there was so much truth in there. There was
too much truth in that Steeler game yesterday. The defense pathetic,
the offense pathetic, The possession was forty two minutes to
eighteen in favor of of Buffalo Buffalo, Yeah, and that

(09:52):
almost seems impossible. One hundred and sixty six yards of
total offense for the Steelers. The offense has zero identity.
Arthur Smith incompetent. Uh, nothing to hang your hat on.
They don't do anything right. Fifty eight yards rushing, one
hundred and eight yards passing, and Rogers deserves credit.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
For playing, but he sucked too.

Speaker 1 (10:12):
Friar Mouth no targets, John u two targets, Austin two targets,
Roman Wilson one target. Did you see Roman Wilson want
to get out of the locker room so quick he
didn't even take off his EyeBlack.

Speaker 3 (10:24):
I think that he is a better player than we are.

Speaker 2 (10:27):
Let on top.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
I think he's their number two receiver in terms of
calate wise and opportunity should be getting.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
Yeah, he's hiding right now.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
They decided they don't like him.

Speaker 3 (10:35):
For whatever reason. He's a third round pick. You picked him.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
That happened was when did they decide they don't like
Friar He went from featuring him too much to not
feature him at all.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
Why do they give these guys money? He spend third
round picks on these guys and then just turn out
to not like them so quickly. Roman Wilson, Caleb Johnson.
I mean, I don't know if Caleb Johnson deserves to
be on the fielder will change much. But he's not
playing at all. He's your third round pick this year.
It's happens because they don't know what they're doing. I mean,
the fat kid can't be your big weapon. And heally
had two catches for forty five yards. He was the

(11:07):
leading offensive groundgainer. The fat kid two catches forty five yards.
And he reminded you too that he's nothing but a
big over because you remember that one play where he
turned around to get a first down and Rogers put
it right on his numbers, just bounced right off of
his chest under the ground. He's never gonna be a
guy that goes for eight catches one hundred and twenty yards,
you know what I mean, like a total game breaking.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
Out of the curve top Who said that?

Speaker 3 (11:28):
I can't remember who was that?

Speaker 2 (11:29):
It was me that right, that's who. It's a super genius.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
You know, people talk about firing Austin the defensive coordinator,
which is absurd because Tomlin is the real defensive coordinator.
But I feel like Smith and OCI is the bigger problem.

Speaker 3 (11:41):
Yeah, I mean he's I don't know if he's a
bigger problem because I kind of lump Austin and Tollman
together onto that defensive side of the ball, and I
think the defense is really, at the end of the day,
what's letting this team down more than the offense. Means,
the most expensive defense in the league, all the star
powers on the defensive side of the ball, but Arthur
Smith is not good too, and there are no adjustments
on either out of the football. And you know what's
a perfect example that shows that there's no adjustments. Mason

(12:04):
Rudolph comes in for one series and they're in the pistol.
Why are they in the pistol with Mason Rudolph because
they put in a bunch of pistol stuff because Rogers
was supposed to play the game and we can't change
our game plan, right, So hey, Mason, operate out of
the pistol for this couple of snaps that you have
to do. I thought that was telling.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
You're right, though, Rogers really did get his nose deft up.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
I mean it was like blown up it really. I
don't think it's broken, but it looked like it was
close to getting broken. Let me ask you this, and
I don't want to sound like sour grapes. Are you
surprised the flag wasn't thrown on that play on bosa
y weight on quarterback? Yeah, like, that's the penalty by
the letter of the law. Don't get me wrong, I
loved it. I think it's a great football play. But
by the rules today, that should have been a flag.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
I think that's called eight or nine out of ten times.
How about Cam with the flag and with the whining.
Is there tape of Allan allegedly knee and Cam, like
Cam Clayton's I couldn't find it.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
Couldn't find it. I know they were under like a
bunch of body but who cares?

Speaker 2 (13:01):
Right?

Speaker 3 (13:02):
And Cam's winding too about how well use different rules
because he's a quarterback and I don't have that trice.

Speaker 1 (13:07):
That's right, Cam, because nobody ever paid one dollar to
see you play. Nobody ever bought a ticket or turned
on the TV to see Cam Heyward play.

Speaker 3 (13:15):
Meanwhile, they were kids at that stadium yesterday who were
there because they wanted to see Josh Allen.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
You know what I mean?

Speaker 3 (13:19):
Like I get to see the MVP up close. Had kids,
they would have been there to watch Josh Allen in
seventeen Buffalo Bills Jersey.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
Yes, I would have bought them for them for Christmas,
but I don't have.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
Kids, absolutely, Mark, So it sounds are trying to make
me Sack have kids. No, you want to buy my
kid of Josh Allen Jersey.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
Not.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
It was really really pathetic to see Cam wys TJ
wat Jersey. You agree with me, how as pathetic as
him having a TJ wat Jersey is more pathetic what
Cam was doing after the game. I mean, it just
sounds so terrible and so tone deaf.

Speaker 1 (13:54):
He was. He was such a highly regarded the steiler
when he was the strong, silent type. Then he got
that podcast and revealed himself to be a jackass.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
And have you ever really seen a fall from grace
like gone from maybe the most likable steeler across the
board to now I think it's he might be reaching
the tipping point where he's more unlikable than like, I.

Speaker 1 (14:13):
Think that his approval rating at one point was like
ninety five ninety seven his uniform number percent.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
I think now it's fifty to fifty at best and
maybe worse than that.

Speaker 3 (14:22):
I agree. And he was going to set himself up
if he was going to remain the strong, silent type,
to get a ton of excuses made for him, right, like, hey,
Cam never want a ring, but he's a true Steeler.
It was everybody else that was letting him down, not
Cam's fault. Now, I don't think you get those excuses now.
I think you wear it, just like what's going to
have to wear it? Just like all these Steelers are.
What should you make the queen skirmish with Trey Essex.
I think it's pretty pathetic for Queen to be saying that,

(14:43):
and I think it's also telling that Queen went at
Trey with individual accolades, right like all pros, Pro Bowls,
never been at these Steelers.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
He was surprised he didn't compare paychecks.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
Right, And then Trey took the high road to came
back and was like, you know, everything he said about
me is true. If I'm gonna give it, I'm gonna
take it. But Trey, you got two rings on your finger.
You're a team player man. So well, those Steelers knew
how to be Steelers. There's a bunch of those guys
I couldn't stand.

Speaker 1 (15:08):
I couldn't stand hinz War, I couldn't stand James Harrison.
But I never had any doubt the team and winning
were first, as big as their egos were.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
Yeah, no question. I mean the list goes on and
on with you, right, Like Jerome Bettis, you didn't get
along with very much.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
Weren't you?

Speaker 3 (15:23):
You were cheering for Nick Harper at one point, weren't
you again?

Speaker 2 (15:26):
I was running, Yeah, I was.

Speaker 1 (15:27):
I was in a post game bootleg postgame show for
twelve fifty and we're getting ready to start when Nick
Harper picked up the ball. I was running through the bar,
going come on, come on, like you.

Speaker 3 (15:37):
Were cheering on a horse that you had a beat
onto the finish line.

Speaker 1 (15:40):
But it was okay because because Ben made the tackle thereby,
you know, making Ben an even bigger legend and saving
Jerome from being Bill Buckner in Pittsburgh, which he would
have no doubt been known as.

Speaker 3 (15:50):
But you're right, all of those guys are just real
Steelers and had the right mentality, had that winning first mentality,
and there's just too many people that look like it's
individual first.

Speaker 4 (15:59):
On tea.

Speaker 1 (16:00):
Now you're six and six, so is Baltimore. The Ravens
lost to can the Steelers regroup and go to Baltimore
and win next Sunday, December seventh Day, will live an
infant me because here's I'm hoping they win. And here's why.
If they win, the usual suspects will start saying, well,
you know this AFC, nobody's that good. They could beat anybody.
They got a chance.

Speaker 3 (16:22):
I'm so happy that they're both six and six. When
they got here, I did like a few weeks back,
So I'm happy that that came true. It looks like
I predict that you can take it. Just take it.
It was on this show. It's kind of like your
intellectual property. Whatsever said on this show. That's true. They
have a chance to beat the Ravens. I don't think
the Ravens are that good. But here I go again,
talking like we did about the Bills last week, right,

(16:42):
and then they got flattened by the Buffalo Bills, and
that game was at home. This one's in Baltimore. They're
just gonna run with Derrick Henry a billion times, right,
Why wouldn't you after what you just saw James Cook
and Buffalo They're running, right, at TJ all the time,
aren't they every They're running right at everybody. I think Mark,
I don't think they see any resistance. And I think
what Cook said up out the corners. Do you hear
what James Cook said attacking the Steelers corners because they

(17:03):
can't get tackling. I think that's gonna carry over now
for the rest of the season. You're gonna see the
Lions do that. You're gonna see the Ravens do that twice.

Speaker 1 (17:09):
He J Watt's contract is an utter, unmitigated disaster.

Speaker 3 (17:13):
We have to start using the words washed up. Right,
he might finish with less than ten sacks this year.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
Well, that's not washed up. That's merely you know, average.

Speaker 3 (17:21):
From what he is. Though, you become washed up by
just being merely as.

Speaker 1 (17:24):
I compared to what he's getting paid, because he's the
guy that made money corresponding to quality. I'm better than
Miles Garrett. I deserve more, except now you got more
and you're not better. And then you look at Garrett,
wh's ascending. He's having his best year of his career.
He's gonna win Defensive Player of the Year on one
of the worst teams in the league, which is so
hard to do. He's gonna blow by the sack record
by a couple of sacks. He is becoming an even

(17:44):
better player. While Watt looks like he's ending his career,
he's approaching his finish line. Three best defensive players ever, mean,
Joe Green won, Miles Garrett two, LeVar Arrington and he
was at North Hills High School.

Speaker 2 (17:57):
Badass.

Speaker 3 (17:58):
He's pretty badass and washing anthro Penn State too.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
He was awesome. LeVar Leap.

Speaker 3 (18:02):
You got to put Lawrence Taylor in there too though, right.

Speaker 2 (18:06):
Way?

Speaker 1 (18:07):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (18:08):
I mean, and LeVar didn't do coke. Oh that's it. No,
he didn't. But that LeVar Leap against Pitt. No, against
he did against.

Speaker 3 (18:18):
Everybody, did against everybody. H He blocked a field against Pitt, saw.

Speaker 1 (18:21):
A snap go over his head when he was punting.
He picked it up in the end zone, ran one
hundred and nine yards for touchdown.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
House. Yeah, tremendous.

Speaker 3 (18:27):
Did he return kicks like I see somebody that he
just put back there to take the house, And I
forget My memory is not not so great. It's such
a weapon in high school football when you have a
stud like that. Just take the opening kick right.

Speaker 1 (18:36):
Back Uh, Tom, a bad topic for you very quickly
pick up murdered by Miami Akroscher thirty one seven.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Were you there? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (18:42):
I was there.

Speaker 1 (18:43):
Uh tough weekend that Akroasuer. Pitt finishes eight and four.
Isn't this basically the same crappy season Pitt always has?

Speaker 3 (18:52):
Yes, it is. I think eight and four is a
good mark for a pit team. But there was nothing
to those eight wins. And you lost in Morgantown to
West Virginia, you know what I mean.

Speaker 2 (19:01):
That's my point.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
Every one of their losses was to some degree a disaster. Yes,
you lost the crappy West Virginia. You blew a big
lead at Louisville. Yep, you got killed by Notre Dame
in Miami, and both of those were act for sure.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
What was the crowd like on Saturday?

Speaker 3 (19:16):
It was actually dead. Not that much of a turnout,
to be honest with you, like percentage m probably like
sixty percent of that stadium full. The lower bowl was
still showing some spottiness on the season. The seat think
that was the students didn't turn out cold.

Speaker 1 (19:30):
What a great college football time, now, Einschul flashback into
his pan down the stretch. He might not be the
new Marino Tom, he might be the new hole Steam.

Speaker 3 (19:38):
I mean, I hate that people would say he's the
new Marino. I still think he's pretty good. I think
he's going to be better than Holstein.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
We oh, we thought Holstein was great though.

Speaker 3 (19:45):
Sure, but I think Heinschel is gonna be good. I
don't think he'll be good at Pitt though. I think
another team's gonna swoop in and take him. I think
Pitt's offensive line also sold him out against some good
teams at the end of the year. He had no
time against teams like teams like Notre Dame in Miami
show just how big a gap is, especially in the trenches,
like Miami did whatever they wanted up front at that
defensive one.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
College football blows I'm looking at right now.

Speaker 1 (20:05):
I want to talk about the Kiffin thing later, but
that sums up everything that just sucks about college football. Okay,
Penguins at the Flyers tonight. You can come watch the
game with me at Pittsburgh Brewing Company. Right off through
twenty eight and Creighton they got the biggest big screen
TV ever and I'm giving away bobbleheads and there's no
real rhyme and the reason to.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
Be doing it.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
I just have collected a bunch of bobbleheads over the
years and I don't want them. So tonight we have
like malc and Lemu Crosby and an oldie bit of
goodie Mark Reki also USA Hockey Jersey.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
So join me tonight.

Speaker 1 (20:37):
What's the Penguins and Flyers at Pittsburgh Brewer Company in Creighton,
biggest big screen TV ever and we'll talk Penguins in
just a moment. One o five nine, It's the EXES
Kick Ass Christmas Show with Highly Suspect to.

Speaker 4 (20:54):

now at WXDX dot com. Okay, Highly Suspects with flight Attendant.

Speaker 3 (21:12):
Tis this He's.

Speaker 2 (21:13):
Into the Jolly party, rocking something.

Speaker 4 (21:17):
It's the XS Kick Ass Christmas Show from one oh five.

Speaker 3 (21:21):
To nine the X TIS this season, It's.

Speaker 4 (21:25):
The Mark Madden Tree Game Show with Mark Madden and
Tom Upferman on one oh five nine the.

Speaker 1 (21:32):
X Time for some hockey talk. Not a great weekend
for the Penguins. They played horrific in every period but
the third period of Columbus. They did get a win
in that game, in overtime La Tang with the goal.
Sid scored a couple. Sid scored again on Saturday at
home in Toronto killed the Penguins. Chilloff's Terriblin goal against

(21:54):
Toronto got pulled. Peng was early competitive, but tonight they're
at the old enemy at Philadelphia.

Speaker 2 (22:00):
England's are two points behind the Flyers.

Speaker 1 (22:02):
Flyers have won their last three and have certainly rallied
to be a bit better under Tockett as coach. I
still think the Penmans have a better roster and a
better future, but we'll see what happens tonight. Come watch
the game with me at Pittsburgh. Grooen Company in Creighton
just off through twenty eight, the biggest big screen TV
in town. Tom we got news at Imama and Rutger

(22:26):
McGorty got called up. We got the kid Line, which
I suggested weeks ago be put together of Kendall Center
and Cloyvenin and McGroarty. So I'm curious to see how
those three play together. I think it's good to give
kids that platform to kind of grow together and kind
kind of bond together too.

Speaker 3 (22:43):
Yeah, I'm excited to see the kid line play. I'm
excited that Bocas in this game too, because I like
a little bit of that edge against the Flyers, connect
me to scumbags, egress to scumbag. I want to see him,
you know, get heavy against those two guys in particular. So,
but the kid line in particular, I think is the
headline for this game. And Kindall and mcgrorty need to
get coyven In going because coyn In has really been

(23:06):
a struggle to start this season. He's got to find
the back of the net a few times, find something terribly.

Speaker 2 (23:11):
I just don't think he can score.

Speaker 3 (23:12):
He's gotta score, though, that's his no question, no question.
So I hope that maybe playing with McGroarty, playing with Kendall,
getting some consistency with line mates will start to spark
some scoring from coven In.

Speaker 1 (23:22):
Well, I'm glad to see mus come up with something
in terms of lineup and tactics that feature kids, because
he's been drifting away from that a bit. It kind
of got me a bit a bit flustered when he
called up Bros. And scratched him two out of three
games before sending him back. That's very Sullivan esk.

Speaker 3 (23:39):
Yeah it is. But I'm also glad that he sent
Hyden down to. You know, it didn't just keep hiding
up here to be a roster spot veteran respect with him.
They just need to get healthy too, don't you think.
I mean that the problem without Raquel and the top
six just isn't as.

Speaker 2 (23:54):
What that is you and Brazo out.

Speaker 1 (23:58):
I mean, those guys, they shouldn't kill your lineup, but
you can't have Kevin Hayes on Sid's line. Options are limited,
so uh, their their depth is really revealed.

Speaker 2 (24:07):
Lack of depth when even a couple of.

Speaker 3 (24:09):
Guys like that are hurt, well, especially their lack of
someone who can slide in on Sid's line if a
Rostoa Raquel goes down. I mean, there's just no one
that's been able to fill that role. And they've tried everybody.
They've tried doers, they tried Hollander for a little bit,
Coyvenden wasn't able to make it happen. Didn't they even
sprinkle Malkin up there for a second or two for
a couple of shifts there. So they've been trying every.

Speaker 1 (24:29):
Sh and together never never works, never never meshes five
on five. And that used to be something Bosma would
try in the third period all the time, and it
just never worked and he kept trying it.

Speaker 3 (24:39):
And a credit to Sid for, you know, not being
able to have consistency with one of his wings all
year and he's just plugging along. Mark sixteen goals, scoring
a ton of points.

Speaker 1 (24:47):
Touch right now. The goals he scored over the weekend
just impeccable.

Speaker 3 (24:51):
The one in Columbus, I mean, the goaltender for Columbus
was just like, I don't even know what I was
supposed to do on that play when he just let
it bank off the wall to him into the Columbus zone.

Speaker 2 (25:00):
Findically just kind of just kind of chipped it.

Speaker 3 (25:02):
Insane and just to have the knowledge to let that
puck go to the boards to his next level now.

Speaker 1 (25:06):
Shiloves was terrible against Toronto after Jari had played two
straight games in a row. Uh, Jari's gonna play tonight.
Do you think we're kind of working toward Jari being
the number one goalie and ending the goalie rotation.

Speaker 3 (25:20):
I was just going to ask you that she loss
has had a couple of really rough performances in a row.
You play Monday, Thursday and Sunday this week, so there's
some nice spacing between your games. Do you just give
Jarry the week? I think I would. I would just
give him these next three games in a row, and see.

Speaker 2 (25:33):
How I would not give him the week. I would
probably start him two of the three.

Speaker 3 (25:37):
Start him Monday Sunday, give she Lofts one shot on Thursday.
I would make it after jar See what happens tonight.

Speaker 2 (25:44):
You see how he plays tonight against Philaelhia.

Speaker 3 (25:46):
Yeah, if he plays great tonight, you know, hold him
to one goal, maybe even shuts them out. Then I
think you just give him the net in Tampa on
Thursday too, and see where you go from there.

Speaker 1 (25:53):
Game tonight's a little bit scary. Philadelphia's won three straight
all on the road. Just won five to three at
New Jersey on Saturdy, New Jersey, you know, highly regarded
Ziegris is their leading score after coming from Anaheim and
flat ar and goal. He's getting to start tonight. He's
done well after coming from Calgary, and I knew with
Rick tockin coaching, new guys would stand out because new

(26:15):
guys wouldn't get a chance talk never has preconceived notions.

Speaker 3 (26:19):
He's a great coach, so it's not surprising to see.
The Flyers are playing a lot better this year. Such
a massive game though for the Penguins. So two points
back are the Flyers and the standings. You are in
that second wild card spot right now, but you're hanging
on only by regulation wins over the Islanders. You have
the same amount of points as them. Everything is just
so condensed here, Mark, I mean, they're gonna go into

(26:39):
the last week of the season probably a point out
or a point in the playoffs. Don't you think it's
gonna come down to that this week? So get a
win tonight against the Flyers. Always good to do that.
But also you're competing with them for a top spot
in the metro, a top spot in the East.

Speaker 2 (26:51):
I got Covid in scoring tonight. He needs to he.

Speaker 3 (26:54):
Needs to find because of the kid line. You think
he find You think it'll be in five on five.

Speaker 2 (26:59):
I just thinking, guy that good can't cook forever with us?

Speaker 1 (27:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (27:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (27:04):
By the way, this will preempt the try not preempted
old kind of. It's a trifecta before the trifecta.

Speaker 3 (27:10):
Tom Wow.

Speaker 1 (27:11):
Top three moments all time highlights between the Penguins and Flyers.
Number three is two thousand nine on next help but
shlush the Flyers and the Penguins eliminated them for second
straight year. Number two is beating them at Philadelphia nineteen
eighty nine, the end the fifteen year losing streak at Philadelphia.
Number one is eliminating them in eight. It was the

(27:31):
handshake on I waited my whole life for the first
elimination of the old enemy. And some people might say, well,
why not Marios five goals and three assists in that
ten eight went over the Fires in eighty nine playoffs. Well,
because we lost the series. Yeah, okay, anything related to
going through the pass. Looking what we've done against the
Flyers has to be related to winning.

Speaker 3 (27:53):
No notes on that. I'll throw a couple honorable mentions
in there. When Sid scored his rookie year in Philadelphia, Yeah,
with no teeth, fantastic moment. And then there's also one
I don't remember the specific game, but do you remember
when Malkin got dumped by some Flyers in his own
zone and he was just so mad. Then the puck
trickled back to him when he was behind the plane.

Speaker 1 (28:10):
He just rips the splash, but he was tired.

Speaker 2 (28:14):
Yeah, he was gassed. Yeah, he just wind up and blasted.
Do you know?

Speaker 1 (28:18):
And how many times he's done this? But usually if
you get the number one store on the road, you
don't bother taking a lap. Sid does when he's number one,
start Hilla he's in Philly. Yeah, he waits and goes
out there, which I think is just so sit He
always says he does n eate the Flyers, but he does.

Speaker 2 (28:36):
He's one of us. One oh five nine The X.

Speaker 1 (28:40):
Tonights the Pen's face off against the Flyers.

Speaker 3 (28:44):
Game time is seven. Our coverage starts at six here
every game and the best coverage right here on your
home of the Pens one five nine The X from
the Dollar Energy Fund Weather Center. This report is Sponsoredvice
super Sure.

Speaker 4 (28:59):
It's got a cloudy today with a few snow flourries,
steady temperatures, potential winter storm tonight. Snow likely one to
three inches expected dropping down to thirty. Snow will eventually
taper off tomorrow. Look for a high in the low thirties.

Speaker 3 (29:11):
Do you own a small business, Tom?

Speaker 1 (29:19):
What did you make of the atmosphere at Aquashore yesterday?
The fire Tom on chance, the booing of Rende Gade
like I said, it was surreal. It came across on TV,
even though that's tough for the atmosphere to permeate a
network broadcast, and it makes me wonder.

Speaker 2 (29:38):
Let's say this season finishes like it.

Speaker 1 (29:41):
Is right now, where they're like nine and eight eight nine,
don't win a playoff game and just look as inept
again in games.

Speaker 2 (29:48):
As they did yesterday. What's the crowd going to be
like at the draft of April.

Speaker 3 (29:52):
I think that's a great question.

Speaker 2 (29:54):
They could turn on the Steelers.

Speaker 3 (29:55):
You could be hearing a bunch of fire Tomlin chants
in the middle of the first round.

Speaker 2 (29:58):
Sell the team.

Speaker 3 (30:00):
You think it would go that far?

Speaker 2 (30:01):
Yep.

Speaker 3 (30:01):
I think it absolutely could go that far, and it
would be an embarrassment that the Runies do not want
to have because this is a big thing for them,
the draft, Like this is their baby now moving forward.
They got their baby out of the way this year
with the Dublin game. Now they move to their next baby,
which is their fun draft here in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 1 (30:15):
I want to encourage all the people out there, all
you stealer maniacs, if you want what's best for the franchise,
if you want what's best for the city, if you
want what's best for the logo, go.

Speaker 2 (30:26):
To the draft and ruin it. Ruin the draft.

Speaker 3 (30:30):
I don't think you have to encourage them either. I
think I think that's what's gonna happen, and that's what's
going to keep happening at Akroser Stadium when you see
this now and.

Speaker 1 (30:39):
Then for that not to happen, I don't even think
that's crossed Art's mind, although maybe after yesterday it has
that that fans could could ruin the draft.

Speaker 3 (30:46):
They'd have to win the division and win a playoff game,
right for it to turn so drastically the direction that
it's currently heading in.

Speaker 1 (30:53):
I don't think they're gonna get a wild card, by
the way, to you, and that's done. Win the division
or nothing.

Speaker 3 (30:57):
Yeah, that's done. I mean I think that goes for
Baltimore too. I think so. The three wild cards right
now are eight and four. Colts are eight and four,
Bills are eight and four Chargers eight and four. Chargers
and Bills have tie breakers over the Steelers. Yeah, wild
card's dead and gone, and in fact I was I'm
looking at it right now. There's a team outside of
the wild card spot. Houston is the eighth seed. They're
a game in front of you right now, record wise,
So yeah, that's done for you. Gotta win the North.

Speaker 2 (31:19):
I think Houston's going to catch Indy, don't you.

Speaker 3 (31:21):
Jacksonville already caught Indy. Jacksonville's in first place in the
division right now. But I think Houston's the best team
in the South. Yes, I think they might be the
best team in the conference. There's a chance they could
go to the super Bowl. That defense is that good.
As Stroud can come back and play okay, which he
did against Indy. He was okay against Indy.

Speaker 1 (31:34):
We overreacted to Danny Dimes. He's New York Danny again.

Speaker 3 (31:38):
Yeah, you think the Steelers kind of did a little
thing of exposing there for the Colts, like, hey, you
cut Jonathan Taylor out, there's really nothing else they can
do to you. Don't get me wrong, it's tough to
cut Jonathan Taylor out of the equation. He's great. But
if you can accomplish it, like you said, Danny Dimes
is still Danny Dimes. That seems to be what most
teams are doing moving forward.

Speaker 1 (31:54):
That said, I think at the very worst he's serviceable.
I don't think they did wrong by bringing him in.

Speaker 3 (31:59):
I still think they might probably make the playoffs, Like
I still think that they're a wild card team. But
I'm getting a little nervous fun with the car.

Speaker 1 (32:04):
It's weird, though, because we all thought the AFC North
would be this superior division, and to turn out the
AFC South, which always sucks, is much better.

Speaker 2 (32:12):
What do we got for the trifectam?

Speaker 3 (32:14):
For today's trifecta, Mark, I have three kind of faux
moves the Steelers are gonna make this offseason to give
the illusion that they're making change, but it really isn't
gonna lead to anything because Mike Tomlin's still gonna be here.
Number three for me, They're gonna either trade high Smith
or Friarmouth. They're gonna have a big, splashy move like that,
get out from one of those contracts and say hey,
we're gonna have some change that way with some personnel

(32:34):
in those vein, in that vein. I think they're gonna
change quarterbacks. I don't think Rogers is gonna be back.

Speaker 2 (32:39):
No, I don't think he is. He might become a bit.

Speaker 3 (32:41):
Of a scapegoat down the stretch here.

Speaker 2 (32:44):
Chris Canny from ESPN later.

Speaker 3 (32:47):
Starting to creep in a little bit as far as
this is Rogers.

Speaker 2 (32:49):
Fault, because if you blame Rodgers and saw Tomlin's.

Speaker 3 (32:51):
Fault exactly, So, I think there's.

Speaker 2 (32:53):
A certain dynamic there that dare not speak its name.

Speaker 3 (32:55):
So they'll turn the page there, get some freshness with
the quarterback. Maybe it's Will Howard, maybe it's someone they
draft this year. But the obvious number one on this
trifecta is firing Tarrell Austin. I mean that is obviously coming.
It won't happen in the middle of the season because
then Tom would have to use play calling duties and
that would really over expose him for that. The defense
is mine and all as shortcomings, but this will be

(33:15):
the big move quote unquote that they make in the
offseason is firing Ta.

Speaker 2 (33:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (33:21):
I think that's all true. But here's here's my one disclaim.
I think I think the first two are more likely
the fire Tarrell Austin one. Him and Tom Win are buddies.

Speaker 3 (33:30):
Yeah, but I think Tommy, I think Toma can hire
another body to you know, be a good.

Speaker 1 (33:34):
Well in the coordinators, like I rode on my trip
Calm Today trip live dot com. Uh, the coordinator traditionally
the franchise is sacrificial lambs.

Speaker 3 (33:42):
Yeah. Absolutely, another prediction. If they do fire Terrell Austin,
you can't put it past them for hiring somebody with
some Pittsburgh ties on that defense. Right for the defensive coordinator.
I don't know, but there's somebody out there that's from
Pittsburgh or at least had a dad from Pittsburgh or
something like that. That's just always a classic move they
do in the off season, too, is they bring someone
locally in.

Speaker 2 (33:59):
Are trees some making Patrick Queen's boss.

Speaker 3 (34:02):
Now there's something Trey would be a better defensive coordinator
than Tara Austin. I'm saying that right now on record.
I have no reason to say it, but I'm going to.
I like, Trey should have kept Brian Flores. Oh, Brian
Flores should be a head coach somewhere. Probably you think
you'd ever get a chance to again.

Speaker 2 (34:18):
Now you're talking, how about here?

Speaker 3 (34:21):
Sign me up. I hate this narrative that is starting
to pick up t tow where people are like, well,
who you're gonna get if you get rid of Mike Tomlin,
You're risking having worse than nine to eight. This purgatory
that they're in right now is awful and there's no
way out of it.

Speaker 2 (34:33):
Well, here's the thing.

Speaker 1 (34:34):
Whenever people say that to me, I generally go right
back to ground zero for my personal level of care.

Speaker 2 (34:40):
Which is, do whatever the frig you want. I don't
care what you do. This ain't my team, it'sure team.

Speaker 1 (34:45):
But if you can't see the forest for the trees,
I don't know what to tell you. If you can't
see that Mike Tomlin is like one hundred and one
percent responsible for the extremens showed that team's become again.

Speaker 2 (34:57):
I don't know what to tell you.

Speaker 3 (34:58):
You just have no out anymore, Like there's there's no
out to be like, well, he should do this. It's
not his fault here. Everything is just pointing towards him.
I mean, you've made so many changes at coordinators, You've
changed the quarterback out every year. It seems for the
past three or four years. Nothing changes. You go nine
to eight and ten and seven, and the same things
happen throughout the year. The defense is underachieving. They go
through these two three game losing streaks where they just

(35:19):
look completely crappy with no heart. It's just the same
movie over and over again. It's like I Got You,
Babe plays every time we wake up in the morning,
Mark groundhog Day.

Speaker 1 (35:28):
They say, I Love won't pay the rent before it's earned. Armne,
he's always spent. I know we ain't got a lot,
but at least I'm sure of all the things we've got.

Speaker 2 (35:44):
It ain't defense, it ain't offense.

Speaker 3 (35:46):

We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today.
