Speaker 1 (00:01):
Let's talk hockey now with Tommy Radio. Tom what do
you think will shill Offs leak in the first shot tonight?
I feel more comfortable that not happening with him than
if Jari were starting.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
You know, I think, just comedically and perversely, I wish
it would happen now because it would just be such
a laugh for everybody to see another goaltender come in
and do it.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
No, it would not be funny in the least. It
would be funny if it was Jarry not Shilloffs.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
It's not gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
And are you sure?
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Yeah, I'm pretty sure.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
I want to bet.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
No, I don't want to bet on it, but I'm
pretty sure that he's not gonna let in that first
go I like the decision, though, Mark, I do too.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
I think with the new coach and a lot of
young kids, you need to get as much change jammed
in early as possible. I think you need to eliminate
staleness as quickly as possible. And I think starting Shilloffs
and instead of Jari in the first game does all
of that. And I'm curious to see who starts in
(00:58):
the second game. Thursday's home opener against the new York Islanders,
because if Shilloffs plays well tonight and wins, I would
imagine he'll be right back in the barrel and that
would really send a message.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Yeah, but how could he not be Even if he
loses a game tonight where it's like three to two, right,
and he impresses and doesn't let in the first shot
and plays well, I don't know why you wouldn't just
pull the trigger on him again against the Islanders, and
then if he plays well again, you could do him
Saturday against the Rangers. We're assuming a lot, you know,
I know, but it's that optimism of a new season, right,
We're assuming.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
A lot with him playing behind that defense.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
I'm more worried about the defensive court tonight than am
how Shilloffs plays well. That's then again, he's done pretty
good playing behind Latvia and I can't name Can I
name one Latvian defenseman?
Speaker 3 (01:41):
I don't think I can't.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Well, you've brought up the point before during training camp
that if this blue line was better than what it is,
and what it is is maybe the worst in the league,
Mershoff would be up here as the starting goalie, like
he's clearly the best option. It would just be a
shooting gallery for the young man, and you don't want
to ruin that confidence right now. So I feel you
like Si Lovs could play well for a goalie but
(02:03):
still let in five goals because he faces like forty
five shots.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
The only Latvian defenseman I can find of any consequences
Sandis Ozolinch who won a Stanley Cup with Colorado back when,
but he's long since retired. What a name Uvis Belinskis
was on Florida. I don't know who that is, but
he won a Stanley cupp.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
So uh so SHEI Lov's isn't quite the national hero
or is he? Because he got him that bronze medal,
he has to be right.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
He is the g is numero uno headlan show in
Latvian hockey.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
I would think, well, I fel good about that Arnett.
Then can you name any Latvian forward? No, so we
have the number one Latvian that's good.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Yeah that.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Yeah, we had Peter skoodring goal. He was a Latvian
two that got us Bupkus. But let's hope that, let's
hope that that Shulos does better.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Yeah, that defensive court might be awful.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
I'm not sure the veterans, not just up up front
especially I'm not sure they'll buy in the structure, but
especially on defense. With Eric Carlson, I'm not even sure
who Watherspoon is.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Now. There's this notion out there on Carlson that since
it's an Olympic year and he really wants to make
Team Sweden, He's gonna kind of, you know, play buttoned
up for him and put his best foot forward. I
just don't buy that at all. I think Carlson's just
gonna go out there and be Carlson like he always is,
and he'll probably just make Team Sweden anyway.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Oh, Kenny Blueger was laughing and used to play here.
Mss Larkins the goalie for for for Columbus. Zemgis Gergenson's
who most recently played for for.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Yeah, he's still with Is he still with Buffalo?
Speaker 1 (03:40):
Uh? No, it looks like he's with Tampa. I mean, like,
I don't know. All the lat Means have cool names.
I can tell you that.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Are they the power in the Eastern European Block now
that Russia's band.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Maybe by default?
Speaker 1 (03:52):
No? Right, I mean check and Slovak as still part
of Yeah, they're still part of the Eastern European Bloc.
But yeah, what do you think of Carlson with the
new structure? You didn't go buy in?
Speaker 2 (04:02):
No, that's what I'm just saying, Like and the people
that are saying, oh, it's an Olympic year, so he
will buy in, he'll play button up. No he won't.
He'll be Carlson. He'll make team sweet and regardless, because
why wouldn't they take Eric Carlson. You're gonna see the
same kind of hand grenade hockey that Eric Carlson has
been playing in his two years in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Yes, Zemngis is with Tampa.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Now.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
I can't keep track of where these lat Fians go
Boston because there's so few. None are great, and they
all have nutty names that I can't pronounce it.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
It's tough to do radio. Now.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
I do like I said earlier, I love the sid line,
I love the power play.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
After that, I very quickly fall out of love with
this roster. Yeah, exactly. And looking at the wings that
Gino's playing with, like he's kind of had a trend
throughout his career mark of playing with some garbage and
elevating it because he was Gino, but now he's not
that great and he's playing with not that great wingers.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
Yeah, but that's too bad for him because Daddy got
to eat first. You got to give Shid what you got,
and with Russ Dott you got to pop Rikeul up there.
Eventually Gino will get Riquel, he will, and eventually Gino
will probably get get uh MCC when he comes back exactly.
So it's not like he'll be out there. Sure it's
a good point with crap, but right now he is.
He's got there with total crap.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Right now, I'm more intrigued with the third line tonight
and seeing this eighteen year old center a line at MSG.
I mean, that's Goosebump city right there. I can't imagine
what he's feeling right now.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Yeah, I just although I don't know, between him and
Harrison Brunick, I bet they could have given it away
on Seventh Avenue last night. But let's hope they found
something more RESTful to do. Uh. I just hope Brunick
gets the minutes while he's here, and I bet he does.
I bet he stays here. I certainly hope he plays well.
But if if any of the above don't come to pass,
(05:43):
you got to send him back after nine games.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Like if he's averaging six minutes a game, seven minutes
a game, I don't.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Think that's gonna happen. But yeah, let's play what if.
But I don't think News would do that. Sally would. No.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
I think Sally's gonna play his third pair a lot more.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
No, muse, I'm sorry.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
News will play his third pair a lot more than
Salli did, especially because brune on it. I really hope
Runix stays for the season and just kind of have
a trial by fire year because as we talk about
with Maryshow, that can kind of ruin a goalie. It's
not the same with a defender, right, Like it's tough
to make that leap to the NHL. But I don't
think you ruin his confidence by making some mistakes.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Do you think Carlson and Lutang get the red ass
if if Brunick takes away from their minutes, not get
more minutes than them because he won't, but takes away
from their minutes.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Is there any potential for that to happen on the
power play?
Speaker 3 (06:27):
No, Brunick ain't gonna play that. Then I don't think
that was should the power.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Play was six in the league last year. That's a
good power play with both e K and Latang on there.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Carlson would get mad if that happened.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
The power it's just not gonna happen. It's just not gonna.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
Like like, uh, I don't think the Tang will because
Lutang didn't get the red ass when Carlson got here.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
That's true.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Latang for all, just a bit of ego that pops
through when he talks sometimes.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
Is a real team guy, really he is.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
You know, I trust Tanger to help Brunick along, just
like you trusted to help Kendle and to help koiven
In along.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
There was a nice scenario that I think Yoe wrote
about where the last two guys to leave the facility
before they left for New York were Kindle and Crosby
ye on exercise bikes together.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
Talking to each other.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Yeah, I don't get that.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
That's really cool. That's a great scene.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
I don't see the veterans beg grudging these young players
at all, are feeling threatened by them at all.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
They won the top of the line veterans.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Loan, I'm wondering about the other one.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
Well, no, but but you know they're in the dressing
room too, like Kevin Hayes.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
I wonder, I guess, but still you can't really worry
about Kevin Hayes too much and his feelings.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
You know.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
The weird thing about this season is a fan.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
Like I said a little bit ago, you know, on
the night you wanted to win your a fan, but
they got to get a top five pick.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
They got to finish loan enough to get balls in
that lotter.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
Because I've seen McKenna play for Penn State and melike,
that's a guy I want some shot of.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
Getting, no doubt, and even if you miss, but you
get the fourth pick, right or you get the third pick,
you're still getting someone that's in your system as your
top process.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
But here's the thing, Let's let's play the what if game.
Let's romanticize a bit.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Tom. If they win that order and get McKenna and
Sid's still here, and you.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
Have fifty million of cap space to spend, having guys
wanting to come in to play with McKenna and Sid,
you can be a team that can win a series
right away right away. That's what McKenna would do, and
maybe better.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
And then Mushoff obviously comes up and is part of
that equation too. He hoped that McKenna moves into Sid's
house too and just kind of completes the prophecy for
a little time.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
I would just don't want to live with Sid.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
I would not, way more quirky than.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
With some quirky, obsessive son of a gun. I just
I just would not.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
And I think that having watched McKenna play, he made
the right move ditching major junior for college hockey because
it's a challenge junior A would not have been.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
And that's why I don't want Bruni to go back.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
I just a little bit we've seen of him this
year and last year in Camp two.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
He is clearly outgrown major junior.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Yeah, it sucks that role doesn't come into effect until
next year, right where you can keep one and send
him down to the AHL team, because that would be
so useful for Brunick. Right now.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Did you ever see that clip of him and he
finished last year with the AHL after major junior wrapped.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Up Bernick and he came here, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
You said, clip him like trying to fight everybody on
the other type. Yeah, It's like there's this scrum and
he's like going from guy to guy punching. He looked
like a Hanson brought her. It was tremendous.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
You're so right about how tough it's gonna be as
a fan this year, because right now, Mark, I want
to beat the Rangers, you know what I mean, Like
season opener Slim facing Sullivan for the first time.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
To be honest, I want to show Sully yeah, yes,
you don't know as much as you thought you did
the last X amount of years.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
And on top of all that, I just hate the Rangers,
you know what I mean. Love going to MSG and
beating them.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
So I love j T. Miller. I'd kind of like
to see him flip out at something.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
It'd be great.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
He's one of those guys if I was around JT
a lot.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
I remember the scene in Bulldoorum where Tim Robbins at
the end intentionally misconstrues something Kevin Costner said and Kevin
cost like flips out.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
He goes, oh, I know what you said.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
I just I just like watching you get all worked up.
I would be that way if I were JT's teammate.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
Kind of flips it on him a little bit. Yeah.
The dynamic between Robins and Costner yeah, you gotta play.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
This you gotta play this game.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
With fear and ignorance, right, but men just say ignorant
Jay Seed.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
Maybe the silver lining in that though, Mark, and what
we're talking about about how we approach this season is yeah,
on the night, it's like, let's go beat Sullivan and
the Rangers. But then when we lose six to three tonight,
it's like, well, one step closer to getting bottom five.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
Yeah, but but you still carry the loss around with you.
And you know, since I'm doing a remote tonight at
a watch party Pittsburgh Brewing Company, let's win tonight, let's
worry about losing.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
You gotta win tomorrow, right.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
Yeah, you're not gonna lose them all, although we sure
tried in eighty three, eighty four, five ninety X.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
It's the Mark manon on d X.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
How'm on the Xtre Wave, an extra our Hockey Talk tonight,
the Hockey Night Show from six till seven, going into
Penguins pregame coverage.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
Puck drops at eight here on the X.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
I'm excited about the Penguins, I'm excited about the new guys.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
I'm always excited to see Sid play. You got JT.
Miller Trocheck and Sully.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
On the other side, you've got Madison Square guard in
the world's most famous arena, and you've got hockey at
its highest level. I love the Penguins, I love hockey.
I love being a Pittsburgh Brewing Company. Tonight for the
watch party with that big, big, big screen TV, it's hockey.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
It's my time of year.
Speaker 1 (11:29):
PPG Paints Arena, the opener Thursday night, That's where I belong.
And I love it even if it doesn't go great
this season, because I see the plan. I see it
even if you can't or don't want to. A lot
of kind of anti Penguin Steelers first, Pirates first people.
They don't want to see the plan and they don't
(11:50):
want to see, especially that their team doesn't have one.
The Pirates not beyond naked greed, the Steelers not beyond
their next game ever.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
So I'm fired up.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
And then, like I said, you got the Steelers who
find themselves in the driver's seat for the AFCN or
just like last year, we got a note and they
blew that, and some stuff don't make sense, high Smith
jumping right back in front of herbig on the depth
chart don't make sense, and high Smith will just get
hurt again, soft tissue. They should get rid of that guy.
(12:26):
I don't get the way Friar Muth and John Hu
are being used or not. Now this is interesting. I've
been told maybe we got to Fable one later, maybe
he'll confirm or tell me different. I've been told that
using Mount Washington and Spencer Anderson as the sixth offensive
lineman wasn't specific to Minnesota as an opponent's that they're
(12:51):
leaning toward more of doing that, and it actually makes
sense some against Cleveland because that makes Garrett rush way wide.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
Minnesota did that sum against Garrett this past Sunday at
London and had some degree of containing him. Although even
though I don't mind that tactic, it is gonna waste
Fiarmouth and John Hu. And it shows lack of a
plan when they signed John Uh, because if you knew
(13:21):
we're gonna do it like this, you really didn't need
John Huh, you didn't. And basically using seven linemen, seriously,
it's seven linemen. If you have Spencer Anderson out there
as an extra tackle and Darnell Washington out there tight end,
that is seven linemen, and holy frig could you be
any more prehistoric seven linemen, you might as well run
(13:44):
the friggin' single wing. But the Steelers are three and
one gonna be four and one and then five and one.
So you can say, and the Steelers can say it's
working whatever it takes, like Chuck Nole used to say,
But will it work when it really needs to?
Speaker 3 (14:00):
Because for eight years that's not been the case. Tom.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
The big news in the AFC North today is the
Cincinnati Bengals are trying to resuscitate their season. They've traded
for Joe Flacco. Got Joe Flacco from Cleveland for a
fifth round pick. That's interesting from two aspects. One is
the Cleveland Cleveland Bengals. Yeah, they're like the same team
right now. The Cincinnati Bengals are gonna go to Joe Flacco.
(14:25):
And I heard somebody on the b team saying, who
in their right mind would think a forty year old
quarterback could salvage their season? And I said, if you
looked at like Aaron Rodgers's birthdate, idiots, do you think
this will work for the Bengals? And what I like
best about it is it puts Shador Sanders as the
number two quarterback for Cleveland Sunday, and after sure he
(14:46):
is in play.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
That is a great ripple effect from this, probably the
best one. You're right, I love also the ripple effect
of you're gonna play Flacco on Thursday night in Cincinnati
in a couple of games. That's fun. And I thought
we would get robbed of another Joe Flacco versus the
Stea experience when he got benched, and now we've been saved,
and that's not the case. It won't work for Cincinnati.
I think he'll be better than Browning. Although here's the thing.
(15:09):
Flacco got benched as early as he did in Cleveland
because he couldn't stop turning the ball over there, and
all Browning's been doing is turning the ball over, So
if that carries over to Cincy, it's the same problem.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
Maybe Flacco will be re energized by going to a
better team. I mean, Cincinnati's two and three, they're not
totally out of it by any means. But yeah, I
Bronning's proven he can't in the games we've seen since
uh Burrows hurry, Bronning has proven he can't, So I
see the point. Will it work, I don't know, but
(15:40):
I respect Cincinnati for trying to salvage their season by
any even remote hope.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
I slightly respect it. If they were truly gonna try
to salvage the season, and they weren't such cheap bastards
as we know they are, they would be calling the
Falcons for Cousins. Like Cousins is the one that you'd
want to get in there. He's just way too expensive.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
Let me play Devile's advocate.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
Even even though I think Cousins is a better bet
to salvage the season than Flacco. Flacco has proven very
malleable in recent years, moving from team to team and
grasping what they're trying to do almost immediately.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
And that's the name of the game right now, because
they probably want him to start this Sunday against Green Bay.
If he can, I'm sure he will, could he not?
Speaker 3 (16:19):
And this is scary. I think Flacco may be more
mobile than Kirk Cussins.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
At this point after Cousins' injury. Well, that's the other
part of this mark is Flacco might get re energized
by the prospect of throwing to T Higgins and throwing
to Jamar Chase. But the offensive line is so abysmally bad.
I mean, that was the reason why Burrow got hurt
and the reason why Burrow keeps getting hurt. Flacco is
going to be able to survive behind that. I'm sure
Browning's gonna end up playing another game at some point
(16:43):
this year.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
Do you think Cincinnati can save their season? I think
they can now with Flacco. Yes, they have a slight chance,
a little bit of a beep on the heart rate monitor.
There's not a total flat line anymore.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
I think Cleveland's a tougher game. Cleveland at Akroshore will
be a tougher game for the Steelers. Didn't act to
Cincinnati the subsequent Thursday.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
I don't disagree with that, although those Thursday night games
can be tricky on the road and in division. But
and now Cinnat's gonna have a little bit of do
like Cincinnati quit as you noted, and now they're not
going to like there's gonna be a little bit of
a fight in the team now briefly for a little bit.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
Briefly if if they if they can win when they play.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
Sunday, Green Bay, I mean, or keep it close.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
Yeah, yeah, like Jamar Chase will get temporarily reinterested. I
thought he was the most notable of the twitters in
that Cincinnati lost his past Sunday.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
But the Browns haven't shown any signs of quitting at all,
despite being one.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
And you know, because they're young and they know they
can get better. They they they probably know that right
now won't be good enough. You know, you know, should
be really encouraged by the direction the Brons are going
and his Miles Garrett because with some of the moves
they're making, some of the kids they're developing and developing well,
they might yet have a playoff team while he's still there.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
And Stona's prime. I mean, this guy doesn't look like
he's slowing down at all. It looks like he's even
getting better. You noted earlier in the segment. You got
to contain him. It's the only thing you can do. Like,
there is no stopping Miles Garrett.
Speaker 1 (18:06):
Although I gotta say, don't you agree with me that
basically using seven offensive linemen, I mean, why not bring
bullet Bill Dudley back and put him in the backfield.
You know, it's just absurdly prehistoric and will not work
against good teams in playoff games.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
That's the biggest problem. It feels really Service Academy, right,
like you're Navy football out there just running the triple
option over and over again.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
Except they're not as creative as Navy's triple option. No,
I just it just.
Speaker 1 (18:35):
They, like I said earlier, they never think beyond the
next game. They never think like, Okay, we can use
this to beat Cleveland, But does it prepare us to
beat a better team? Are we making progress? Are we
improving as a team? And the answer traditionally with this
team is no. They don't improve from season's end beginning
to end. In fact, they often get worse.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
And isn't the simple fact they just can't play mottern
football because they don't have the skill position players required
to do it. DK Metcalf is the only one really
that fits that mold. Like there's no other player on
that offense that strikes fear into another team. No one
fears Jalen Warner kind of the game well out of
the backfield. No one fears Calvin Austin.
Speaker 1 (19:15):
They don't fear Rodgers anymore either. I mean, they respect
him because of his guyle. But I talked yesterday about
how you know Rogers here Brady and Tampa Manning in Denver,
they ate great quarterbacks no more. They're probably at best. Well,
Manning in Denver was rotten. He won just because he
knew how to win, and they had a great team
assembled around him. But but you know, quarterbacks that old,
(19:38):
the only thing they have going for him is their
experience and their gle.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
Yeah, I think Rogers's arm is actually better than most quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
I think Rogers's arm is better than Manning's was then,
and Brady's.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
Was, there's no question about that, and Breeze too when
he was in his forties. Like, Rogers's arm has aged
the mest great docts.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
His arm might not be in the top half of
arms in the league right now among the starters, but
it's but it's in the middle.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
I mean, there's just some Bazukahs at the top now
with like Josh Allens is of the world, but Rogers
still has some talent there. I think there's a little
bit of fear for Rogers. It's his connection with DK.
That team's here, but like there's just nothing else, Like
there's nothing else you can go to. There's no game
where Calvin Austin's when he gets help.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
That Cod just thinks of this seven offensive line and stuff.
I think on one hand, he's grateful that it's going
to protect him, but I but I also think I
also think he knows it limits his options. Then again,
with the lack of offensive talent in that huddle, his
options are limited in the first place.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
Kind of where I'm going, Like, although I.
Speaker 1 (20:34):
Don't get using John Whu and Fiar moose so little
and to so little effect.
Speaker 2 (20:40):
Well, that's really poorly done by them, And going out
and getting all those tight ends.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
Why signing far move through that long term deal and
trading giving John Hu a big deal. It's just stupid.
If you thought you would go to this, then it
would be necessary. You have to have some effing foresight
when you put a roster and plan together. And this
Steelers don't, like I said, they never ever think past
the next game.
Speaker 2 (21:04):
If they are pulling the plug on you know, Johnny
and Pat Fairemouth and utilizing those tight ends, why are
they doing that because they've never even tried it, Like
Johnny Smith's averaging like point six yards per reception. They're
just telling them to like turn and face the quarterback
once the ball snapped and catch it and try to
take it up field like they're not using them over
the middle of the field, they're not using them in
creative ways. How are you ever gonna know if it'll work?
Speaker 1 (21:22):
But yet the Citizens are lapping it up because they're
three and one.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
Well, and I think you know it's that nostalgia you
get into with the big, big boy Steeler football, right,
run it up the gun.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
They're still not that physical, Honestly, they're not blowing people
off the ball.
Speaker 3 (21:34):
They're just getting in the way.
Speaker 2 (21:35):
More Minnesota was the closest they've come to blowing team Minnesota.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
They got a good push then, no question.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
I don't know if that carries over to the Browns
defensive front, though it's a better defensive front.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
Well, I want to see what happens now moving forward
when more and more opponents have seen the seven offensive
lineman looking and plan for it.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
Right, because remember they just dink and dunked their way
to that eleven and zero record when Ben came back
the COVID year and then teams figured it out and
it was over for the Steelers. They knew how to
play on That's the same thing that's gonna happen here.
Speaker 1 (22:05):
Uh, if you were Cleveland with the Steelers using all
them linemen, how would you deploy.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
Garrett Probably on the weak side, right well.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
But if they use Spencer Anderson, there really is no
weak side. If Anderson and Washington are out there.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
And you're saying you'd split them, have Anderson on one
side in Washington on the other instead of like stacking
them together, what are they doing more of I think
they stacked them together against the Vikings to FABO would
know for sure.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
But then the play goes the other way.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
No, not for Garrett, saying if Garrett, it goes away
from Garrett.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
I know, but I think he might have the speed
to be able to, you know what I mean, shoot
down the line.
Speaker 1 (22:39):
Actually he did exactly that on a big play against Minnesota.
Came all the way around. But here's what I'd do.
I'd line Garrett up more in the middle. O Zach Frasier,
because no matter what anybody says, I am told by
those who know but won't say it out loud that
he's not having a great year, that he's only been okay.
Speaker 2 (22:56):
I would just have Miles Garrett roaming around like he's
the predator monster, you know what I mean, just like
kind of like creeping back and forth like he's stalking
his prey and then he just decides where he wants
to run.
Speaker 3 (23:05):
Pick defensive tackle, the first round pick for Michigan.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
The first round pick for Michigan that they have. His
name's escaping. We were Mason Graham, Mason Gravey. You know
what I would do?
Speaker 1 (23:12):
I did Mason Graham like lift him up like a press,
slim and swing from hield. Yeah, that would be That
would be fun to watch with seven offensive lineman. You
might want to try something, all right, Uh, don't forget
On today's show, got a lot of great guests. We

It's the Mark Madden Pregame Show with Mark Madden and
Tom Afferman on one five nine.
Speaker 1 (25:16):
The Xblem back on the pregame Show, brought to us
by good friends at Shenderovich, Sendrorovich and Fisherman, the personal
injury attorneys. Everybody else charges forty percent, but they say
f that we're only charging twenty five.
Speaker 3 (25:34):
I got told yesterday after the show by a.
Speaker 1 (25:38):
Decent source at the New York Rangers want to trade
for Ricard Raquel. I bet they do. It won't happen
before tonight's game, but I bet they do. I bet
a lot of teams do, and Kyle Dubis isn't done
making moves for sure, but a lot depends on how
the peng would start, and mostly their record of Thanksgiving.
(25:59):
I think if they're out of the playoff picture of Thanksgiving,
they will trade Raquel, maybe trade Rust. I think they're
still trying to trade Carlson. I think Dubas. I think
that's rescrewing up. I think that they wouldn't miss a
beat without Carlson. I think he's the likeliest to not
want to adapt to the way MWS wants to play,
but Dubas is holding not for too much in trade,
(26:20):
too much in return, and I just think it would
be a cleaner fit for the whole team, like with
Bruni's minutes, if you didn't have Carlson here, and I
had thought Detroit was interested and maybe still are, but
Carlson is still here. Tom, how long do you think
Dubas gives the Penguins to not be a contender before
(26:41):
he starts, you know, making moves that that might discourage Sid.
Speaker 2 (26:44):
I think Thanksgiving is a good place to start, and
Pierre always says that, right, like, that's like the point
of delineation for teams.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
Very rarely do teams not in a playoff spot at Thanksgiving. Yeah,
get back and make the postseason. And that sounds ridiculous,
except it's true. It's so early, but that's true.
Speaker 2 (27:02):
So the data says, So if they're healthily out of
it by then, you gotta start making moves. You got
to start trading Raquel's and Carlson's. The Carlson thing, you
think it's because he's trying to get more than he's
ever gonna get for Eric Carlson and he's not coming
to terms with I'm just never gonna get this King's ransom.
Or maybe it's not that extreme, but you know what
(27:23):
I'm saying, is there a little bit to it where
Dubis is thinking, you know, this was my really first
big swing here as Penguins GM, and I don't want
to punt on it completely yet, Like I kind of
want to see if it turns the corner a little bit,
because it was a huge move when he came in
here and it has fallen so flat.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
I have never been more disappointed with the Penguins acquisition
than I am. Eric Carlon right, I've never seen a
guy go against the grain of what you needed him
to be more than Eric Carlson. His offense kind of
you know, it's still good, but it petered out from
I mean, one hundred points in San Jose and his
defense and his lack of concern for score and situation
(27:58):
the game. I always go back to his couple years
ago when they were fighting for a playoff spot, which
they just missed by two or three points.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
This was two years ago.
Speaker 1 (28:05):
We led Detroit by two in the third, he committed
two absurd pinches and Detroit scored twice and we in
Pittsburgh still won in overtime, but Detroit coulda lose a
point that could help him, and he just, you know,
I refuse to believe Sully fell on the sword. He
like kind of said that Carlson didn't do anything that
(28:26):
he did.
Speaker 3 (28:26):
Not want, but he was lying.
Speaker 1 (28:27):
No coach wants a defenseman to pinch with with with
four minutes left in a close game that you lead nobody.
Speaker 2 (28:36):
And if I remember correctly, he was the one who
scored the goal in the overtime in that game to
win it for the Penguin.
Speaker 3 (28:42):
I think you're right. I'm liking the press, like, oh
f exactly was that a Detroit?
Speaker 1 (28:46):
I forget? I think it was at Detroit. It's right,
I remember watching the game somewhere, but like, my.
Speaker 2 (28:52):
God, it had to be him, right, And that's just
the perfect Eric Carlson experience, and his time as a Penguin.
Speaker 1 (28:57):
Is just sometimes sometimes he shows flashes of that brilliance.
So like like in that in that overtime win against Columbus.
Uh when when the when Sid scored late to make
it for four?
Speaker 3 (29:12):
Okay, is it Coombus?
Speaker 2 (29:14):
Remembering now?
Speaker 1 (29:15):
Whoever it was it was the last exhibition game we
played Commas for FI right Buffalo, Right, So Sid tied
it late and everybody hates overtime in the preseason, but
they won nine sixes because Carlson came down the left side,
his off side and made this great feathered past to
Sid as a late trailer wide, which is such a
tough pass to make, and he put it right on
(29:36):
his tape bang game over, and that's there. Cost I
thought would see moro of but I had somebody who
covered him an autoi say when when Pittsburgh got him.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
Now you get to see him every day, and let's
see what you think.
Speaker 2 (29:47):
I mean, there's probably what ten to twelve games a
season that he's been good for to be like, wow,
there's the Norris Trophy winner. That guy kind of dominated
all of this game. He played twenty five minutes and
he was the best player on the ice for most
of them. That's just ten or twelve games, and then
the rest of it is just the human hand grenade hockey.
Speaker 1 (30:04):
Yeah, he's just I mean, and like his lack of
concern about like he can just blow the game and
go talk to the media afterwards and like do like
a game show.
Speaker 3 (30:17):
He just plays how he plays.
Speaker 1 (30:18):
I've never seen a guy so cavalier about this is
who I am, this is what I do. And he
doesn't even get mad if you like, nobody's pushed. Like
I never heard a word about what I've written and
said about him, and he has to see some of
it because I've been really critical.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
He just doesn't care.
Speaker 2 (30:37):
Last year he basically skipped out on all of camp.
I mean, he was quote unquote hurt, but he was
playing in like charity golf events and stuff like that,
So I think he basically was like pulling the old
eye of my arm to get out of it. Do
you think he felt a little bit of pressure because
of a new coach to show up and do it
this year because he surprisingly did?
Speaker 3 (30:52):
Oh good lord, what has this buffoon done?
Speaker 1 (30:55):
Now? Maybe I don't know. I don't think so. I
think he was legit hurt something I do. I don't
think he's a I don't think he tanks. I don't
think he doesn't try.
Speaker 3 (31:05):
I just think he plays how he wants all the time.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
He did have the Vegas fleu though that one time
that they went out to Vegas. Remember anything they missed
the practice.
Speaker 3 (31:12):
Yeah, he missed the practice because he was out playing.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
No doubts, no doubt he had Vegas three in the morning.
Speaker 1 (31:16):
Well, I know for sure because I was at the
black Tech table right down the same pit like I had.
Kyle asked me how I knew that, and I said
because I was. I was like, I don't have a curfew.
Speaker 3 (31:26):
I was. I was in the same place.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
I was the one who told him to split those tens.
Speaker 3 (31:29):
No, he was playing craps. He just playing craps. Craps
are fun. I just never figured out how to play.
Speaker 2 (31:34):
I'm too intimidated by craps. But you're right, doesn't it
look like such a good time when you're throwing the
dice and everybody's around the table chair.
Speaker 1 (31:39):
My my buddy, one of my ball hockey buddy's Chris Hauser,
who practically invented the sports guy from Leminster, mass Niagara Falls,
originally great player Kid, a great player too, was on
my team that won the World Championships for under twenty
back in oh six. Bobby Hawser and uh and Chris
loves to play craps and I was in. I was
with him in Vegas one time, and I never played
(32:01):
craps and I was hammered. So I just I just
bet on whatever he bet on, and like, I ended
up winning like six hundred dollars and had no idea
what happened, no doubt like when when when they cheered,
I cheered.
Speaker 3 (32:12):
I just it was fun. It is fun.
Speaker 2 (32:14):
There's no doubt. That's one of the better atmosphere games
right at a casino. Like, if you're not gambling, it's.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
The best atmosphere game then, yes, like blackjack is I
love blackjack, but it's a grind people. Yeah, Roulette is
really random. Yeah they're all random, but you know what
I mean.
Speaker 3 (32:30):
Yeah, I do.
Speaker 2 (32:31):
Roulette, I would say is probably second place there. I
like Roulette, just spelling out chips on a bunch.
Speaker 1 (32:35):
My only Roulette experience of any of any consequence was
I was betting fifteen dollars a spin on three different numbers,
so so forty five bucks a spin. I I I
think I won playing I don't know why I did.
Speaker 3 (32:50):
It was it Rivers too.
Speaker 1 (32:51):
Was there with the friend of mine who was visiting,
and he liked to play Roulette, So I bet fifteen
bucks to spin. I hate that red and black stuff. Yeah, okay,
it's two nickel me. I hate the sections. I hate
parsing through the section up. So I was betting every spin,
straight numbers right, three, goalie numbers, Flurri twenty nine, Regget
(33:12):
thirty one, Barrasso thirty five, how about Barrasso thirty five?
And I hit Barrasso. So that's like what thirty six
to one times fifteen?
Speaker 3 (33:20):
You do the math. That's pretty good money, big time. Yeah, Okay.
Speaker 1 (33:23):
Then the next spin, I didn't know that when they
paid you, they left the winning bet on the old number.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
I didn't remove it. I won again.
Speaker 2 (33:30):
It hit again.
Speaker 1 (33:31):
I hit Barrassos twice, and like those were the only
two times I won.
Speaker 3 (33:35):
But by the time I left, I walked away with
like four hundred bucks.
Speaker 2 (33:37):
It was the second hit. It was massive.
Speaker 1 (33:40):
I was like, what happened? I didn't know you again,
I didn't know they. I didn't know they left the
bet out there.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
I love that strategy because that's the same strategy I
use when I play roulette. I go on sports numbers
like Larry Bird thirty three, Bus thirty six.
Speaker 1 (33:51):
I've gotten in big arguments at roulette wheels twice, once
in Vegas, once at the rivers because I will see
people talking out loud like, well, Reds hit seven times
in a row, it has to come up black now,
and I will say to them because I.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
Can't help myself.
Speaker 1 (34:07):
You do know the wheel doesn't have a memory, right,
You do know that every spin is a separate occurrence
of fortune, that it has no bearing on what previously happened.
It's a wheel, not a person. It's a wheel.
Speaker 3 (34:22):
And I will say it like that because I get
just I get so pissed.
Speaker 1 (34:25):
Off at you'll lunch instead of just doing what I
should do and mining my own business.
Speaker 2 (34:29):
Your percentage doesn't increase from what was it, like forty
nine percent since you got the two greens in there too,
Like you don't go up to like fifty.
Speaker 3 (34:37):
In Vegas now.
Speaker 1 (34:38):
You know, I always bitch about how Vegas blackjack is
six to five. Now now they're doing triple zero wheels.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
I hate that. Yeah, there's always still a tempted to
throw on a little green though, just to cover there's.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
Some wheels downtown that do single zero.
Speaker 2 (34:52):
See that's the one where I'll split it.
Speaker 3 (34:54):
That's the place to gamble now is downtown.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
When there's one just one single zero.
Speaker 3 (34:57):
And where they pay three to two blackjack. Everywhere.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
I always split the zeros if there's two zeros, little
insurance there. I know you said you don't like splitting,
but I think that's a good strategy because nothing's worse
than it coming up green and nobody hitting.
Speaker 1 (35:09):
There's a lot worse I've experienced. Yeah, a lot worse
all right up next to trifecta. And don't en at
three o'clock. You don't want to miss it. My semi
regular tribute to the American Dream Dust the Roads, because
I'm going to talk about the penguins. Daddy, the penguins
haven't had times one oh five nine X.
Speaker 4 (35:26):
God, it's the Woody Show, weekly mornings at six.
Speaker 3 (35:29):
If you're not the wiser, does it really matter?
Speaker 2 (35:31):
On one oh five nine d X from the Dollar
Energy Fund Weather Center. This report is sponsored by Flynn's
Tire and Auto Service. We're gonna see rain on and
off throughout the day, high of sixty eight, just a
few clouds tonight, dropping down to an overnight low of
forty four. Ex.
Speaker 1 (35:51):
You know, Tom, if there's one phrase I live by,
it's you can't judge the one by looking at the other,
and you can't judge book by looking at the cover.
More of that later on. What do you got for
the trifectam?
Speaker 2 (36:05):
I got three fun Penguins factoids before the season starts tonight.
Number three.
Speaker 3 (36:11):
Yeah, we'll see how fun they are at about nine thirty.
Speaker 2 (36:13):
Well, these are fun. They have nothing to do really
with the game. Well, I guess kind of the Big Three.
They become the first trio to play twenty seasons together
in NHL history, and a lot of what the Penguins
do right now is serving nostalgia, So it's cool to
have that little historic nugget attached to those three. Number two,
Kendall and Brunnic become the third set of teenagers to
play together in Penguin's history. They are also the third oldest.
(36:37):
They're not the youngest of this three. The second youngest
is Chrys Latang and Jordan Stall combined five hundred and
fifty four days, the youngest pair though, do you know it? No,
the Big Boys a part of it, Mario Lemieux and
Doug Bond, So.
Speaker 3 (36:51):
That makes sense.
Speaker 1 (36:52):
Yes, they had three first round picks that year was
a bad team and they all came straight into the
opening like squad, including Roger Blaney.
Speaker 2 (36:59):
Uh Mario and Bodger were combined four hundred and eighty
six days years old, four hundred and eighty six days
into their teenage years.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
Right, right, they're very young.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
Number one, though, is Sidney Crosby. He joins Steve Eiserman
as both the person in NHL history to be a
captain for the most total seasons and then obviously the
most total seasons with one franchise being a captain at nineteen.
When he takes the ice tonight, I had.
Speaker 1 (37:22):
A bunch of really inappropriate jokes I could have cracked
at almost any time.
Speaker 3 (37:25):
I'll tell you what they were between segments.
Speaker 1 (37:28):
But yeah, I think all that's interesting, and I think
the more we can focus on what is interesting, the
mortal take this thing out of some losses that are
gonna pile up. But I will say I would not
be surprised that the Penguins win tonight, and I'm predicting
they'll win two out of their first three. The New
York teams, the Islanders Arrangers aren't that good. It once
(37:49):
shot me to see them get the dubbed tonight in
New York. I think hill Off starting he could stand
on his head I think he'll be inspired by starting,
whereas Jarriot, which just would have been well like goal
on the first shot.
Speaker 3 (38:03):
Probably.
Speaker 2 (38:03):
I mean, it is kind of a perfect year when
you look at it from the angle of you know,
nostalgia and historic achievements from your best player. Sidney Crosby,
he does this thing nineteenth year as a captain before
the season even starts, and he's gonna pass them you
and Eierman this year as far as points is concerned,
I mean, as long as he averages a point per game,
which I hope he does, and if he stays healthy,
(38:24):
which I hope he does, he will definitely pass both
of them. And those are both of his idols. I mean,
he'll become the leading scorer in Penguin's history when he
passes Mario and then Iserman's his guy from birth. I mean,
so from that aspect, there's a lot of stuff that
you know, has a little bit of a fan service
element to it when it comes to Sidney Crosby this year.
Speaker 3 (38:43):
Yeah, oh no, you need it, no question like it.
Speaker 1 (38:46):
Like I said, there's gonna be a lot of storylines
this season, a ton of them. I mean, there might
be some bad ones, you know, that. Like I said,
I've seen far worse, which I'll talk about just a
little bit. But the most important thing is to get
that top five draft pick, to get one of those
star caliber forward talents and hopefully you know when the
lottery and get Gavin McKenna.
Speaker 2 (39:08):
You know something Borkiy said yesterday when he joined the
show too. If they are flirting with that playoff spot
by Thanksgiving or they're slightly in the playoffs, you better
make it then, like they they cannot kind of float
around in that mushy middle and then be the ninth
team in the Eastern Conference. If you're gonna do it,
do it.
Speaker 1 (39:24):
I don't think they're bad enough to lose like ten
in a row, and I I if it's gonna happen, though,
you know what, it could happen this trip out West
right after the first three games. That'll be testing. That'll
either be a real good thing or a real bad thing.
And either way it'll be start to find out thing.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
What if the Penguins, with this new structure with mews
to just get better with a lead, And I mean
they've not had a problem getting out to a lead
in the years past. It's been preserving the lead. That's
been the problem.
Speaker 1 (39:51):
Well, when you get a lead and you have that structure,
you're gonna play Carlson or not.
Speaker 2 (39:55):
You're gonna play Carlson. Yeah, there you go.
Speaker 1 (39:58):
The Trifector brought to us by Danny's PiZZ and Hogies,
Pittsburgh's original oven bake togy since nineteen sixty.
Speaker 3 (40:04):
That's Danny's on Route eighty eight in Bethel Park.
Speaker 1 (40:07):
And the pregame show brought to us by our good
friends at Senderovich, Shander Rovitch and Fisherman.
Speaker 3 (40:13):
They got your back, not your wallet.
Speaker 1 (40:15):
Up next, I'm going to talk about hot Times Daddy
one oh five ninety X.
Speaker 2 (40:21):
Now it's your chance to win one thousand dollars. Just
entered this nationwide keyword on our
