Speaker 1 (00:00):
After all that talk about historic, it's a bunch of
washed up old men living on past glories. And for
Steeler lifers like Whatt and Hayward, those weren't all that glorious.
That hold out by cam the big extension for what
(00:21):
acquiring Ramsey and Slay that's all a joke. Now, zero
sacks and zero takeaways last night, and what in particular
a non factor?
Speaker 2 (00:34):
TJ. Watt is a fraud. Garrett had five sacks yesterday?
What had zero? Garrett has ten on the year? What
got four?
Speaker 1 (00:47):
The Steelers made all these changes in the offseason, and
it feels like the same team going to the same place,
namely Pollukaville. And that's because of Tomlin. The Steelers will
be stale until Tomlin goes. The Steelers will fail until
(01:08):
Tomlin goes. He might be the most overrated coach in
sports history. Let's talk now with Tommy Radio. Tom it
was embarrassing, and it starts with that historic defense. Four
hundred and fifty four yards allowed, bad tackling, and the
big names all suck.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
Oh, it's laughably bad, and there is just no way
it gets better because the main cause of the defense
sucking is it's too old. How do you fix that
as a season wears on, where you've already had your
bye week, Like these old timers have to play every
single week now until the end of the year, so
there's no bouncing back from this, Like this is what
you have to live with. Maybe there will be better
(01:49):
performances than what you saw out of Green Bay, maybe
you'll get a turnover, maybe you'll actually get a sack
in future games. But it's a bad defense that your
offense is gonna have to unbelievably carry. And who thought
we'd be here?
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Well, you're not going to carry that bad defense with
your offense settling for field goals. Absolutely, that is epidemic,
as it always has been. A lot's being made of
the tight end shredding the Steelers Craft, who had seven
catches and two touchdowns. But the Steelers can't tackle anybody.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Yeah, I just think.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
Everybody treads the Steelers defense. I mean, how much yards
after catch did Jamar Chase have in the Cincinnati game.
I mean he was just having DB's bounce right off
of him. And Craft's a beast. But you're gonna face
a beast this week. And Tyler Warren, like a lot
of teams have dudes at the tight end position that
can catch the ball and go downfield and break a
lot of tackles. So you combine that with you being
maybe the worst tackling team in football. That's probably fair
(02:42):
to say, especially after what you just saw last night
on a national stage.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
Oh, it's not going to go well at all. The
amount of broken tackles was just absurd. And it's all
the Steelers fucking football one oh one top. It's they're
tackling too high. They're trying to overpower the guy, trying
to get like a big hit in. As a coach,
you're just getting low and taking the guy down.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
What is the root problem with that defense? Is it
just too old?
Speaker 1 (03:08):
The big names are turning to dust before our very eyes,
and especially TJ. Watt, who just deserves to be excoriated
because he got that big money and now he sucks.
He just isn't a factor as often as not more
often than not.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Yeah, another game where he was just invisible against Green Bay.
It's they're old. That's the problem. The main problem is
that they're just too old. And that's why it's, like
I said, there's no fixing it. You just don't magically
get younger all of a sudden, So it's too old.
That's their biggest problem. Coaching is a problem too. I
mean no doubt, they're very vanilla.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Again.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
They were blitzing like crazy for the first like five
six weeks of the season.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Why has that dried up?
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Why are they just going if they got scared, they're
terrified to giving up a big play. Yeah, so they're
content to lay back and die death by a thousand cuts.
Except it doesn't take a thousand cuts because they're missing tackles.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
That's a great point. Dylan Gabriel game, it's chaotic. They
look like six seven guys are rushing him. Enter Joe Flacco.
Oh my god, we can't blitz Joe Flacco. He'll rip
us to shreds.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
And he did right whether they blitzed him or not.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
Now I feel like Aaron Rodgers did okay, But the
offense was one for ten on third down. Nobody's a
real threat, not even DK Metcalf. And DK Metcalf is
among my biggest disappointments of this season. He only makes
the occasional play and he drops a lot of balls.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
The dropping balls part, I get you. I don't know
how much of it is his fault though, because when
they get him the ball, like things happen.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
If he doesn't fault or not. If he can't make
big plays, why just sign him of course trade for.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Him rather, But I think it might come down to
the usage thing and just feeding him the ball more,
because again, things happen if he catches it and you
get him the ball, he makes plays. The only one
on that offense that can really make plays, aside from
maybe Jalen Warren out of the backfield, who I actually
thought was decent in this game too. Like I thought
they actually ran the ball decently well against a pretty
good pack ER's rushing defense.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Then they just kind of got away from that. But
they totally abandoned the run what just like three or
four attempts, and.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
I know they started losing, but Mark, it wasn't getting
out of control until.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
The leading they were leading by what four points or
five points, wasn't going into the fourth quarter.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
Yeah, So I mean, I don't know why there was
just this abandonment of the run. Rogers was okay, it
wasn't his best performance him on third down was poor,
and yesterday that.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
He got rattled when the Packers got ahead. Like he said,
it wasn't a revenge game, but it clearly you know,
got it? His is melon a little bit, not least
when Jordan loved badly up plays, Yes, badly up play.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
You know what else I think got in his head
a little bit hearing a go Pack go chant from
the other side in your new home Stagum.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Well, the fans should be ashamed of them, no doubts.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
I mean, these scumbag Pittsburgh Steeler fans, these supposed hard course.
How many of them sold their tickets to get some
meager profit on the night and sacrificed the Steelers' home
field advantage on national primetime TV.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
Yeah, I mean, playing it simple, You're just not a
true fan. If you do that, why would you not
further term scumbag? Why would you not want to go
to that game as a fan of the Steelers. That's
like the marquee game of the year on your schedule.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
Let's be honest, Tom, The team is phony, the town
is phony, the fans are phony. Everything about Pittsburgh football
is phony. And by the way, the field was awful.
You know, played Saturday and there was so much sand
on the field.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Looked like a remake of Dune. I know, I started
seeing every place there was a bad spot, they just
threw sand at it.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
And that is done to Art Rooney being too cheap
to hire people that no matter what.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Is going to make that field be better than that.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
It is pure laziness from the field crew. That's what
this comes down to. Did you notice how they just
slapped the Steelers logo over the pit logo on the
field too, And you could kind of see the pit
logo looking through and people are kind of like, oh,
pit game before, so you have to do that. No,
you don't, that's just laziness. Get rid of the pitlow
and put on the Steelers' logo. You know there's stripes
in the end zone. People always bitch about that. Why
can't we have the yellow Steeler en zone? It's because
(07:05):
of Pitt. No, it's because the field crew doesn't want
to paint it over and over again.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
They can, they just don't want to. I hated all
the first half field goals.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
You could have put the game away in the first
half with touchdowns and settling for three just comes too
easy to the Steelers, way.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
Too easy, and I I'm upset that it's coming as
easy as it seems to be coming to Aaron Rodgers too.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
Now, maybe that won't last, but it appears that there
is sid The only way.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
That anybody's gonna put the word out that what's happening
needs fixed will be if Aaron Rodgers says it.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
And I'm not sure he'll be willing to talk about
the defense. No, but he did in the postgame mentioned
when DK dropped that one ball. What did he say?
It looked like he said, catch.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
The effing ball, probably something like that. I did notice
in his postgame though, Rodgers did work in how you're
playing good teams, you can't kick field goals, you have
to score touchdown.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Tomlin said that too, But that's on Tomlin, right. I mean,
I'm just calling Arthur Smith whoever.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
I'm just wondering maybe Rogers starting planning a little bit
of a seed there that, hey, we can't be doing
this next week against the Colts the Chargers game, we
have to go for it on fourth dolland and short
in Green Bay Territory.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
I had a great appearance last night. It celebrates as
an imperial and somebody asked me about Aaron Rodgers. His
demeanor and I concluded kind of ad libbed, and I'm
gonna say it now. You know what's really made Rogers
a better citizen in Pittsburgh. He doesn't go on Pat
McAfee every week. That was a minefield for him when
he was with the Jets. It brought out the worst
of what he had to say. And now I wish
(08:33):
he'd go on, Yeah, the way things are going for
the Steelers.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
No doubt, but it is like strictly football for him,
which is good as far as his persona is concerned.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
And still I still wish he'd say something not good
for us, And in that vein, well, I'm not sure
it's good for the team either, And that ties into
I think the leadership is obviously horrific. You got Cam
afterwards talking about the team doesn't have enough fight. Well,
who's responsibility is that? That's a great leader. And the
Steelers get rattled easy. Look at the dumb penalties and
(09:05):
everybody gets the booboo face.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
Yeah, things snowball downhill just way too easily for the Steelers.
And I hate hearing leaders talk about how there's not
buying on the team. It's just like you're telling on
yourself when two Remember a couple of weeks ago, was like,
there's not people showing up for team meetings, and they're
going to like, dude, you're the quarterback. That's on you
and like Cam and Away tells on himself here, Oh
(09:29):
you know, we just don't have enough. Fight Okay, get them,
get their ass moving, get them light a fire under them,
have them fight what most.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
Needs to be fixed, tom And can they fix it?
If you had to pick one thing, because I see
four and five in their very near future, and then
they're in trouble. If they lose the next two, they
might miss the playoffs. I said before the Cincinnati game,
they have a tough time not winning the AFC North.
They appeared determined to give losing the AFC North their
(09:57):
very best efforts.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
The thing that most needs to me is the pass defense.
The rush defense was okay against Green Bay, it was
good against Jacobs. I think it'll be fine from time
to time. Not great, but fine. Their past defense is
gonna get torched by every good quarterback.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Every single member of that secondary sucks, yes, except for
maybe Deshaun Elliott and now he's hurt.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
TJ Wats an.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
Absolute fraud Yeah, they can't get any pass. Rock Hi
Smith's a bum. Like if you put everybody on that
defense in a burlap sack and beat it with an
axe handle, whoever got a fractured skull would absolutely deserve it.
Coming up next, a little bit of Penguin Talk. Got
a whole lot of great guests. Matt Williamson, our football guru,
the Old two nineer, Phil Bork, Bryan Batco, It's the
(10:41):
Mark Mannon Show on one oh five ninety X.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
Penguin's host Saint Louis.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
Tonight, we got the Hockey Night Show tonight from five
thirty till six. Lots of news with the Penguins Hall
of Fame ceremony before the game on Saturday was terrific.
It was absolutely first class. Got lost that night to Columbus.
Sloppy game, but the Penguins came from don for too
late and got a point. But Raquel broke his hand
(11:08):
needed surgery. He's not at least six weeks, so that's bad.
Covenan's back up. That's good. Probably should never have gone
down after just two NHL games in the first place.
Coyn isn't on Sid's line in raquel spot that's Philip Hallander,
which is weird. Co is on Kindle's line, so that's
(11:30):
two thirds of my proposed kid line. Kindle's on the
top power play. That's good. He has more power play
acumen than Raquel and sounds kind of odd to say
that about an eighteen year old bit. I've seen enough
to know that's true. H Sid must really not want
to play with Covenan. I bet he thinks Coyvenan is slow.
(11:51):
I don't feel tardy. Brunick and Kindle were both sat
on Saturday. Brunick for second straight game. I get pulled.
That'sload management, but that's more like a healthy scratch. When
Bruneck and Kindle are out, the energy level of that
team plummets. It's too many veterany scrubs paycheck guys, and
(12:13):
Brunick and Kindle are two of their better players. It's
a shame about Raquel, but Coleyvenon was torn at Wilkes
almost two points per game. Like I said, penns at
home tonight against Saint Louis.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
I'm going.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
At Philadelphia at six pm tomorrow. You can watch that
game with me and grab some wings too. At Archie's
on the South side tomorrow, and I'll get there at
six because the Penguins Network pregame show starts tomorrow at five,
gets me out here a bit early. That six pm
start time is because it's one of those games, one
(12:52):
of those nights where every team in the NHL play,
so they staggered the game times to get as much
hockey on TV as possible, thereby giving the entire continent
the best chance possible to not watch. Let's talk pucks
with Tommy Radio. Tom I'm glad to steal a point
on Saturday, come back late from two goals down. But
(13:13):
Shilloffs was zero for three in the shootout and looked
really terrible doing it.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
You just gotta do better.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
There, Oh no doubt he was awful in the shootout.
But Mark, even though they lost in their win streak
was snapped. It was another game that just felt refreshing
because instead of blowing a two goal lead late against
the team like Columbus and having to just settle for
that loser point, they fought back with five minutes left
and earned a loser point in a game that looked
like they were doomed to lose. So again, it's just
(13:41):
kind of different A different field to the team.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
Yeah, I'm still bummed about Shilloffs though, and I know
Jari's terrible on the shootout as well. Chiloffs just stood
there and got beat and none of the goaltenders around
the league polk check anymore on a shootout that was
Flowers Forte.
Speaker 2 (13:58):
It's busy with the stick and nobody he doesn't know.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
Do you think they even practice it that much anymore?
Do you think that that was a Sullivan thing or
is that more of a league.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
Goalwis in the last ten to fifteen years have all
been coached to play the same way with like that
VH pad set up on the post. I think it's
all just by rote now, like too many things in
sports are in general.
Speaker 3 (14:18):
Did you have any problem with Muse's selection of shooters,
specifically Malkin as the third shooter, because Sid and Jean
are latang and Sid I think are great one toos.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
No, I don't think Sid's that good ed. I think
he basically the same move every time that shuffle for him.
But he did score their best shootout guys ross statistically,
so I'm encouraged that Muse wet with him to lead
off Raquel's injury is unlucky. I'm surprised Coynan is not
Sid's line, but I'm glad he's on Kindle's line because
that was my plan has published Tom and has talked
(14:48):
about on the show Get Together, that kid line.
Speaker 3 (14:50):
Yeah, but he would kind of like to see him
with Sid, right, that's probably what's best for development.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
Yeah, yeah, but but this I can It's okay. I
can live with.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
What does it have against coyven because Hallander on Sid's
line seems an odd choice?
Speaker 3 (15:02):
Is Calendar even faster thanquiven in?
Speaker 4 (15:04):
Like?
Speaker 3 (15:04):
Is that like if your theory of Covenent's too slow?
Speaker 1 (15:07):
I have heard that the prevailing opinion in the organization
is that the worry about coven and he is slow. Now,
I think the best way to cure that is playing
with Sid and make him keep up.
Speaker 3 (15:18):
This would have been a decent opportunity to maybe try
to splash Kindle up there on the top line on
a wing with Sid. But they I think they just
like him as the third line center.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
No, I think they like him as a center period period.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
Which by the way, is why you can't bring Geno
back next year, because you can't block kids got to
be the two c. Yeah, and make him be the
third center indefinitely.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
Power play was one for three and it's second in
the league at thirty three percent. But it's starting to overpass,
Like the early success, a lot some conceit to settle in.
Speaker 3 (15:47):
Yeah, looking for the tic tac toe goal a little
too much.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
I like the kindle like there's some silver linings with
Riquel's injury, even though it really sucks that he's out
for almost two months. Coiven in coming back up is
a good one. But Kendall being on that top power
play I think is huge. I think maybe he can
add some juice to that.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
I think by the time the dust clears and everybody's healthy,
he stays. He stays on the top power play unless
Muse just goes to the veteran respect car, which I
hope and pray exited with Mike Sullivan.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
Here here's something funny.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
Tom Crosby had scored on five consecutive shots coming into
the game and then early on passed up a bunch
of great shots only sid But he played very well,
so no complaints.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
He's been unbelievable to start the season. And again, as
we said, I think last week you know, you're not
surprised to see it, but it still is just such
a marvel Every year he comes out of the gate
looking fantastic, looking like a top player in this league.
Still how Gino has the most assists in the league
so far.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
Not a great game for Gino Saturday, though.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
Still dish it out though had an assist.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
I worry about his adrenaline, you know, fading like last year, well,
not as adrenaline so much, just as his conditioning will
let him down because he ain't SID, he ain't Tank. Well,
Tank's played better and his conditioning won't let him down.
I think he's I think when the games pole up
a little bit, like you know, we played Saturday, then
again Monday and Tuesday. I think then in his mind
he accepts more readily that less can be more in
(17:10):
terms of what he tries.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
You know, they're implementing this load management when it comes
to Kendall and Brunick, and I was not a fan
of back to back scratches for Bernick. I think that's
over him.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
You know what.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
You know what happened there when Caleb Jones got hurt.
I don't think they wanted to throw him out there.
In a righty, righty pair. But then again, I mean,
Caleb Jones is not for weeks.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
What you're gonna do just bench Bernick for a week
now or a couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
You can't do that.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
You can't do that. Would you call Pickering up and
send Bernick down? We can't send Bernick down. He's stuck here.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
So you send call Ryan Graves up and then ko.
I'll answer my own questions.
Speaker 3 (17:43):
Maybe Pickering, though I don't know, that might be something
that they can do. I bet you Brunick plays tonight,
though he'll be in. I bet you Hey and Doomba
will be the bottom pair tonight.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
If he doesn't play tonight, then I'm gonna wonder about
him staying here and not being returned to junior.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
Saturday wasn't a.
Speaker 1 (17:57):
Good game for the Peng was exciting but sloppy, and
it had the feeling of adrenaline wearing et. Guys like
Brazo are visibly slowing down. Yeah, they need McGroarty to
get back.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
They need and they need to have a little bit
of a youth movement starting to be called on from Wilkes.
Like bros is playing really well on the third line.
In Wilkes, like, I think that dude needs to be
up here soon, Like start leaning into those young guys, because,
as you said, with Kendall and Brunneck in the lineup,
the guys like Gino and the Legs are under them
a little bit more. There's a more jump for the
entire team that can only become more of the case,
(18:28):
the more youth you implement in and the more you know,
paycheck guys you phase out.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
The Hall of Fame thing was great. I can't wait
till I get inducted.
Speaker 1 (18:35):
The displays like the Mike Lang thing, the plaques, and
they're going to expand it. I plan to contribute some
stuff from my collection to be displayed, like my Greg
Polis All Star Game MVP stick stuff like that. I
have a bunch of other stuff as well. You know,
it was great to I mean, I talked to Artie
fairly often. You know, I see EJ all the time,
so it's great to catch up with Ronnie, who as
(18:58):
always was very gracious and and I'm always like honored
when Scotty remembers me or whys about remembering me, but
it seemed like he did, and Cuz like ten year
old me Tom is like I'm talking to Scottie Bowman,
the Canadians Coach, the Blues coach even before he came here,
and then one with the rand Wings. I mean, he
was such a big name in my eyes as a kid.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
That's how ten year old me feels about doing the
show with you.
Speaker 5 (19:23):
Every day, Mark, one o five nine, The X one
oh five nine, d X has your shot at X
dra cash. Oh yeah, here we go, guys, thirteen times
a day, nine am through nine am.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
The X will give you the keyword at the top
of every hour.
Speaker 5 (19:38):
Enter its at WXDX dot com and you could win
one thousand dollars in non consecutive unmarked bills.
Speaker 2 (19:45):
I don't know he's here.
Speaker 5 (19:46):
That In detective shows, listen all day for your chance
and some extra.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
Cash unless you've gone something better to do. On one oh.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
Five nine, the X people are freaking out over.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
This year, so bad Heart Radio all three got twenty.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
He's inted by Capitol One.
Speaker 6 (20:01):
Welcome Down the Biggest The Mark Madden Tree Game Show
with Mark Madden and Tom Upferman on one five nine.
Speaker 1 (20:13):
Today is what they call a sports equedox, the thirty
second time it's ever happened where the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL,
and Major League Soccer all have games, not not exhibition games,
but all games that are meaningful on the same day. Tom,
I I again, I it's a great opportunity to not
(20:34):
watch all this. I mean, I think it's kind of cool.
Did you have all those options? And part of me,
if if I wasn't going to the Penguins game tonight
against the Blues at PPG, I would probably sit in
front of TV and flip to a couple of minutes
of every sport so.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
I could just say I did.
Speaker 4 (20:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
I think I'm gonna try to do that, although I
don't know. Is the MLS game on ESPN. That would
be the key. If I can have an easily accessible
it might be streaming. The Monday night game would be
on the isstuam Actually, now that I'm thinking about it,
but it's a charm to it, right, I appreciate the
charm to it.
Speaker 2 (21:06):
Most of the MLS games are on streaming. I think
someone on Fox.
Speaker 1 (21:09):
I think they made a mistake going almost not not exclusively,
but pretty close in terms of streaming.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
But but I get it because that's where the money was.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
Yeah, I guess, but a sport like that, you kind
of need to glom onto the traditional cables.
Speaker 2 (21:22):
I think the exposure. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
Like and especially like with with Messi in the league,
and you know he's signed an extension, He's going to
play until he drops.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
Like an NFL goes to streaming and it drives traffic
to the streaming site, and MLS doesn't necessarily do that.
Speaker 2 (21:35):
You know what's great about Messi?
Speaker 1 (21:36):
Messi won the Golden Boot, you know, led the league
in goals, and he's there's he plays only about eighty
percent of the games.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
He just like there. I haven't confirmed this. There's some
cities he just doesn't want to go to and he
doesn't have to go to them. I mean, no, he's messy.
He can he can do what he wants.
Speaker 3 (21:53):
Is he gonna play in the World Cup. I think
he's announcing this week. I saw like a tease for
that day of the Serio game.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
Do you want to be there when Argentina cuts? Because
I do. I just don't believe Argentina. It's the same
with Portugal and Ronaldo.
Speaker 3 (22:05):
Yeah, but Ernando still scores for Portugal from time to
time and they bring him off the bench.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Now didn't they kind of do that with him? He
is a liability in the other two thirds of the fead. Okay,
no question.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
He doesn't track back, not that he ever was. He
used to be such a great athlete, his legs would
just automatically take him there. Well, he's still a great athlete,
just old.
Speaker 3 (22:21):
If he wants to play Messi, you cannot cut him
after you just won.
Speaker 1 (22:25):
The most specially because the way he plays, like Ronaldo,
is so dynamic that when he slows down it does
hurt his effectiveness. But Messi, like I've seen him play
for Miami. I went to that game between Miami and
Columbus and Cleveland. He just pings passes all over the
place like bing ping ping, like you know, thirty forty
yards right on a guy's foot.
Speaker 3 (22:43):
You think he's still be very effective in Europe, just
maybe a little step slower, not the dominant Messi.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
I think there's a better chance he'll be effective in
the World Cup because not every opponent's great, true, and
he can he can pick a spots when he plays,
when he comes out and stuff like that. Now, Tom,
before we get back to the Steeler crucifixion, Pitt killed
NC State, Pitt six and two and four and one
the ACC. But of course is a team you support.
But but how serious are you taking where they're at
(23:10):
because it's only the ACC. If Pitt did lose to
West Virginia. But Pitt could be eight, no, maybe even
should be. And if they were, they'd be ranked if
they were, if they were seven and one, if they
hadn't lost to West Virginia, they'd be right.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
They'd be ranked right now if they didn't lose to
West Virginia because Louisville's a good team and ranked themselves.
Uh God, that stings too, just seeing that loss against
West Virginia because they bad. I mean they really more
so maybe now than when it happened, because of what
it's cost Pit right exactly. I'm excited for Pitt. I'm
not getting too far ahead of myself. The ACC is
so bad. But if you win the ACC, you get
(23:42):
into the playoffs, so I mean, you have a path there.
They're not gonna do that though. To win the ACC.
I mean they have they have a championship game, Craigs.
You gotta finish top two it regularly, yeah, and they're
just not gonna do their schedules brutal after this game
at Stanford this week. But my goal is Marcus to
beat Stanford this week. B seven and two when Notre
Dame comes to town. That's a big matchup. Some buzz
both team seven and two. It'll be on national TV.
(24:03):
That's what you're shooting for the season. You know, it's
odd people are saying that if they had gone to
what's in Kinschell? Yeah, the bomber, the bomber, right, if
the bomber had played all the games, that they'd be
you know, undefeated or one loss. But if the bomber,
if if the bomber had played all the games, excuse me,
(24:23):
I got I screwed this all up.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
It was a good show till now too. No people
are saying they should be you know, one loss, zero losses.
But if they were one loss, zero losses, Holstein would
still be the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
Like they needed Holstein.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
They needed Holstein to lose the West Virginia to get
Heinschel in there, and I think Heinschel has been to
their benefit.
Speaker 2 (24:43):
Going in the West Virginia thing started.
Speaker 3 (24:45):
I think the idea of maybe turning to Hinchel and
then blowing the Louisville game and him throwing interceptions to
blow the Louisville game wasn't necessary. If he doesn't blow
the Louisville game, he starts the next week against Boston College.
Boston College stinks. He probably beats Boston College, so you're right, Like,
I don't think this butterfly effect exists. Like if Holsting
didn't crap the bed, you'd never get to Highscholl because
that was a money decision. I think that's very clear.
(25:07):
They went to Holstein because he was one point five
million dollar man. Heische was apparently blowing him out during training,
and it works. I absolutely, you know.
Speaker 1 (25:15):
I Liverpool lost again un less said the better, but
as always I am resolute in my faith. Uh you know,
I feel funny not talking about the Steelers because we
did the Penguins last segment. Now we've done done Pitt
and talked about the Sports Equinox. But but I mean
the Steelers are done. I mean, but no, they're not
because they that division, so batter keeping them alive. I
don't feel like they have any potential to do anything significant.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
Can I make a prediction? Am I allowed to make predictions?
Of course? December seventh, when the Steelers go to Baltimore.
It'll be a day that will live an infamy.
Speaker 4 (25:45):
Get it?
Speaker 3 (25:46):
And I bet both teams are six and six at
that point. I bet both teams are six and six.
That would mean the Ravens lose one game between now
and then, and that would mean the Steelers win just
two between now and then.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
That'd be great, though.
Speaker 3 (25:56):
I think it will actually be great. I actually think
the Ravens have a chance to be seven and five
and the Steelers six and six at that meeting.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
How many people do you think just now got the
day that will live in infamy? Reference?
Speaker 5 (26:05):
Not many?
Speaker 2 (26:05):
Did you get it? I did?
Speaker 3 (26:07):
After you just explained it, I came back around and
remember December seventh, Yes, Pearl Harbor Day, Yes.
Speaker 1 (26:11):
A day that will live in infamy. You know I
have I have a my one of my closest friends
is Japanese American. Every day for the last thirty someone years,
I've called him on Pearl Harbor Day and said, man,
you guys are win with the chance. Better better follow up,
you know, and he just hangs up. Do you think
the Steelers can bounce back and beat Indy? No?
Speaker 3 (26:33):
I don't think they have any shot against Indy. This
is the best offense. And by the way, that guy's
probably listening now, do you see them bouncing back against
the best offensive football?
Speaker 2 (26:43):
You know, you know what's funny is we all went
to the the old the old saw that.
Speaker 1 (26:48):
Well, this Green Bay game after they lost the cincinn
it's the kind of game they bounced back and win. Well.
I mean, you know what happens too with Steeler fans,
especially the real stooges, the true believers. They could lose
seven games in row and they'll keep using that bounce
backing and then when they win, they'll say see, see see.
Speaker 3 (27:07):
Yeah, you're you're right about that. And I'm sure some
of that will pop up this week. I'm just done
trying to resist the Colts being a legit Super Bowl contender.
They're one of the best teams in football. They murder
bad teams and they played good against them good teams.
Speaker 1 (27:19):
They're certainly a legit Super Bowl contender in the in
the AFC, which which has like maybe a.
Speaker 3 (27:23):
Couple good teams. They played the Chiefs in a couple
of weeks. I can't wait for that. Chiefs and Colts
is going to be a AFC teams.
Speaker 1 (27:29):
Do you take seriously besides, uh, Buffalo, the Colts and
the Chiefs, and I kind of knack on the Chiefs bandwise.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
Yeah, the Chiefs, they're probably gonna win the same Yet
you really think so? Yeah, I'm still sticking with them
not making the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (27:41):
I think tonight they might murder Washington and just start
really fine tuning in things. Denver's good in that division.
Speaker 2 (27:46):
Happened to Washington? I mean, I know Jane Danielson has
been is that the summon substance.
Speaker 3 (27:51):
He's not playing super great when healthy, but he's been
banged up all year.
Speaker 2 (27:54):
Nice hurt big.
Speaker 1 (27:54):
I think, to quote slapshot, they got too much too
soon last year and they were almost bond to recede
a little bit.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
I think he actually pointed that out in the off season,
because they're always right about everything.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
Well right, but no, but that wasn't up to me.
That happens in every it happens a lot.
Speaker 1 (28:09):
And he used the peak a bit early, generally received
a little bit before they get to their true peak,
because I think Washington, I think Jane Daniels could win
a super Bowl sooner or later.
Speaker 3 (28:18):
When Lamar comes back next week and they start to
get some mojo going. I mean, the defense played better
against the decent Chicago offense. I know, Chicago looked terrible,
but that offense was playing well and they have Ben Johnson,
so the defense kind of bounced back for Baltimore, they
needed to win that game. I might take Baltimore seriously
in a few weeks here.
Speaker 2 (28:35):
I'm just disgusted by the Steelers. I watched that game
last night.
Speaker 1 (28:38):
I was just disgusted, and I wasn't surprised, but like
just just I mean, they looked like they quit in
the fourth quarter once uh, green Bay got ahead, they
just put their heads down. Yeah, quits maybe too strong
a word, but it looks like they knew the inevitable
was losing. It started to feel like a funeral. Like
that was the vibe around the game. What expect when
(28:59):
the subag fans give their tickets to Green Bay people
for some meager profits so they can pay off the
mortgage on their shanties.
Speaker 2 (29:06):
I mean, what what?
Speaker 1 (29:07):
What?
Speaker 2 (29:07):
Just awful? Awful fans.
Speaker 1 (29:09):
I mean, Steeler fans have always overrated themselves, and for
that reason, I'm glad last night when don like it
did with the.
Speaker 3 (29:16):
Packers fans taking over. Yeah, you know, Cincinnati stunk before
that Thursday night game. You didn't see any Steelers black
or gold in that stadium. It was all Bengal white
because since the fans weren't gonna sell to Steeler fans, they're.
Speaker 2 (29:28):
Better than that.
Speaker 1 (29:30):
What did you make of the throwback unis they're disgusting.
I thought they looked like a flag football team from Zillianople.
I kind of like the helmets, like I kind of
like the Matt yellow helmet. I think that could be
a nice change up. How about when Roman Wilson cut
the long ball early, I know, and he ended up
with what four catches.
Speaker 2 (29:45):
Hit a touchdown?
Speaker 3 (29:46):
He cut the garbage time I hope they keep using them.
They have to hit forty six percent of the snaps too,
so that's encouraging.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
I love the garbage time touchdown because like almost wasn't
a touchdown, but the rest made the right call.
Speaker 3 (29:57):
No, it wasn't touched on you right, And you know
I call a garbage touchdown, but it wasn't exactly garbage time.
Speaker 2 (30:02):
Because if they get the two, then there Johnny just
drops the ball. What the hell's that about?
Speaker 1 (30:07):
Well, he's another one. I cited DK Metcalf earlier, is
a great disappointment among new guys. I think John Smith's
been a great disappointment.
Speaker 2 (30:14):
Now.
Speaker 1 (30:14):
You might say it's cause he hasn't been utilized as
much as I expected, but still that drop DK two.
I mean, they just aren't as good as they should be,
even if their opportunities have been somewhat limited.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
I think you could probably say John Who's been the
biggest disappointment, unless you count like a Thornhill and a
Sleigh as newcomers too, which you'd have to in.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
This you know, you could make the argument Jalen Ramsey's
been a big disappointment, but I think that was due
to overestimating him and them giving him too much to
do at age. What is he thirty one? Yeah, I
mean he's you know what he is now and I've
said this repeatedly. He's just a slot corner. He's probably
a pretty good slot corner, but that's all he is.
He's not a guy who can go out and blanket
the other team's top receiver as we thought he could,
(30:53):
and Jamar Chase decisively proved he can't anymore.
Speaker 3 (30:56):
Rat Ramsey's still okay. He's had some splash moments this year,
Thornhill and Slay Suck. I mean those two are cooked completely.
I mean liabilities on the field, especially Thornhill.
Speaker 1 (31:07):
Well as I as I said, I'm gonna talk more
about later. I think they made a mistake. And I
praised the trade when it was made, but I think
trading Minka for John Whu and Ramsey has turned out
to be a mistake because John, who's not in the
role i'd hoped for. Ramsey is nothing more than a
slot corner. And even though Minka hadn't been a standout
in Pittsburgh for what the last couple of years, they
(31:28):
are crippled at safety. I like Deshaun Elliott, who's now hurt.
But if DeShawn Elliott's your best safety, you are in
trouble at safety.
Speaker 3 (31:36):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (33:57):
For the traffic Today, I've got three coaching decisions that
I just think are insane and I completely disagree with
number three. They could have been running the ball more,
especially at the beginning of the second half. What was
it three carries in the second half, they were running
the ball well. They both were a game. Will had
a good game.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
They would no.
Speaker 3 (34:15):
It just makes no sense. And it was a great
rush defense that they were doing a good job against.
I don't know why they didn't build off of it.
I think that was a stupid decision. Number two are
the field goal layups. There was a fourth and three
at the Green Bay thirty two, they decided to kick
a field goal. There was a fourth and four at
the Green Bay twenty four. They decided to kick a
field goal. Used Aaron Rodgers get four yards, keep the
(34:36):
drive alive.
Speaker 1 (34:37):
I agree, I don't think you win in the NFL
three points at a time. Tomlin even said that after
the game. That was the first thing he addressed. But
I mean, that's on you, Tomlin.
Speaker 3 (34:47):
He chose not to go for it on that fourth
and four, on that fourth and three. But the number
one decision that is just so baffling is her BIG's
playing time. Again, they had like twenty four snaps high
Smith and Watt severely outsnapped him. High Smith has done
nothing since returning Herbig or Watt hasn't really done anything.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
Smith's not there to stop the run. I disagree just
like you do. But that's what they're thinking. Okay, but
it didn't work against green Bay. They didn't stop the run.
Speaker 3 (35:11):
And sure they were fine against Josh Jacobs, but the
backup Wilson averaged like five point two yards of carry.
He all of a sudden became an effective rushing threat
for the Green Bay Packers in this game. I know
Mike Tomlin's gonna get asked tomorrow at his press conference
about Nick Herbig's playing time, and he's gonna lean on
game plan was specifically designed to stop Josh Jacobs and
Herbig can't stop the run, and that's just a crutch now,
(35:31):
that's just a default for him.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
Herbig needs to play stopping the run.
Speaker 1 (35:36):
Like like I wrote my Trip column, the Steelers have
just been a NonStop parade of bad decisions, both on
and off the field for a number of years now.
And among those bad decisions is their decision to give Friar,
Moot and high Smith big money over the long term.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
There just was no need to do that.
Speaker 1 (35:53):
Those two were eminently replaceable and uh, and I'm not
sure there'd be any worse off now with their with
their rush ends being what her Big and Jack sawyer.
Speaker 2 (36:04):
They would not be anywhere off now.
Speaker 3 (36:06):
No, they would actually be better off because they wouldn't
be spending so much money on the defense.
Speaker 1 (36:10):
Maybe you could spend it somewhere else, Yes, exactly, So
maybe they'd have a number two receiver they're working at
that well, I would say Mark has Valdez scant way
and that'll solve everything.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
Getting him.
Speaker 1 (36:20):
I always like when we act that a guy who's
available to sign off the street yeah in October is
somehow going to be the answer.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
Yeah, I know, it's so laughable.
Speaker 3 (36:33):
The her Big thing, though, you've brought it up, and
you could be right about this that you know, maybe
if you do increase his workload, it's not going to
be as an effective her Big. Okay, that's the Devil's
advocate angle to what I'm saying. We go find out exactly,
like what's the point of just keeping him in that
role if he can, if he can't be in an
expanded role, then you'll find that out early.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
But you gotta try. You have to try something. Your
past rush has been invisible for two weeks.
Speaker 1 (36:57):
We got some great sound later, Tom the usual Tomlin
and Steeler stooge's like Rex Ryan and Steven A.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
Smith.
Speaker 1 (37:05):
We got sign of them burying the defense. I mean,
just being cruel and certainly not to be.
Speaker 3 (37:10):
Kind, but it's warranted. I mean, this is one of
the voice.
Speaker 2 (37:13):
It would have been warned weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (37:14):
It's the one of the worst defenses in football. There's
no way around it, especially now that the turnovers has
dried up, because that was something that they were doing
decently well. Do you think that the citizens will turn
on like Watt Hayward. No, I think they're gonna turn
on Tara Austin. They already have started to date.
Speaker 1 (37:28):
But that's a bunch of nonsense because he's not even
really the coordinate, but he's this one's really the coordinator.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
He's the scapegoat that's coming. You can see that they'll
make some some.
Speaker 1 (37:36):
Uh some just move to play Kate like Tom went
announced he's gonna handle the defense.
Speaker 2 (37:43):
Yes, when he's been handling the defense all along. D Yes,
I love that.
Speaker 3 (37:46):
A good I'm taking over play calling move by a
head coach that always reeks of desperation.
Speaker 1 (37:50):
Tomlin is absolutely incompetent, and he's probably never been a
good coach, and he's probably the most overrated coach of
all time. And that was a great tweet somebody sent
to me last night, you know, with the at and
I just don't see.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
Why people buy into him.
Speaker 1 (38:07):
And I'm hoping by the end of the year that
even like the usual suspects, the stooges with the media,
and it's happening a little although like stephen A and
Rex Whyen, they're not blaming Tomlin.
Speaker 2 (38:18):
They're saying that defense.
Speaker 3 (38:21):
You know how this goes fast forward to August next year,
it'll be the same song and dance with those guys.
Speaker 1 (38:26):
Well, part of the problem is he's never gonna get fired, no,
and for that reason, nobody calls him to be fired.
Speaker 3 (38:31):
But those people go on those shows with just lazy.
I gotta get through this segment. Steelers are up on
the block. Okay, Tomlin's gonna have him well coached.
Speaker 4 (38:38):
That's what they do.
Speaker 1 (38:38):
You're not gonna get a better coach than Mike Tomlin.
That's what people always say, exactly. Shane Steichen is a
much better coach toan Mike Tomlin because he's actually coaching
in the year twenty twenty five. To tom Win is
just so behold to the old way that worked once.
And to Tomlin never was a good coach. That's gonna
be my end of the season. Call him that he
never wasn't good coach and literaria for he won with
(39:01):
Coward's team, with Coward's leaders and Coward's culture.
Speaker 2 (39:05):
And the further we get away from that, the more
foolish she looks.
Speaker 3 (39:08):
You know, the Colts game too, Stichen just dominates Tomlin
with bad Colts teams. Now he's got the best team
in football right now, what's he gonna do with that?
Speaker 2 (39:16):
That could be like a thirty point win for Indy
at after Sure.
Speaker 1 (39:21):
The trifecta brought to us by Danny's Petron Hogi's Pittsburgh's
original oven baked togy since nineteen sixty. Check out Danny's
en Route eighty eight in Bethel Park. More Steeler talk.
I'm gonna tell you now, not next segment, but the
segment after. If you call with angst, I'll.
Speaker 2 (39:38):
Get it on. I'll get it right on because I
want to hear you suffer. That's like, oh at Ace
Frehley reference inadvertently. I hope you suffer. What's that rip
it out? One oh five ninety
