radio and podcasts free and never sounded so good.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
If you are a Steelers fan who is hoping to
get a pick me up on Sunday and feel better
about the state of the team after Thursdays letdown against Cincinnati,
it didn't happen.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
The Packers won in Arizona.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
The Steelers get to play them next green Bay four
to one and one their first place in the NFC North.
They got three sacks out of Micah Parsons this week
and six overall.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
The Colts beat.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
The Los Angeles Chargers thirty eight twenty four. Those the
next two teams after green Bay that the Steelers have
to face the two qbs. In that game, Justin Herbert
and Daniel Jones combined for seven hundred and eight passing yards,
five tds, two interceptions. Both had passer ratings of ninety
three and one thirteen, respectively. Furthermore, coming back Jonathan Taylor
(01:01):
had ninety four rushing yards and three touchdowns for Indy,
and three different receivers had between fifty and ninety eight
receiving yards. Meanwhile, Keenan Allen had one hundred nineteen yards
receiving Aronde Gadson Junior had won sixty four. Those are
third and fourth options for Justin Herbert, to say nothing
(01:21):
of Quinton Johnson and Lad mcconkee. And remember, this is
the same defense that just got skewered by Joe Flacco
and made Justin Fields look like he was going to
be the best Jets quarterback since Joe Namath back in
Week one. Instead, since that game, Fields has looked more
like Mark Sanchez. After a late night in Indianapolis, he
(01:43):
got bench yesterday. Kenny Pickett played and fumbled his first
snap for the Raiders. George Pickens made two catches for
the Dallas Cowboys, the likes of which Cowboys fans haven't
seen since Lynn Swan over Mark Washington in Super Bowl ten.
But hey have Roman Wilson, so I'm sure they'll be
just fine at wide receiver number two. Besides DK Metcalf,
(02:07):
I'm Tim Benson for Mark Madden. Mark is back tomorrow.
And I had an epiphany about the Steelers game at
Akroscher Stadium Sunday night. It's not gonna be a popular one,
but here goes, I don't give a flying fig about
Aaron Rodgers versus Green Bay.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Sunday Night Football was already pumping it.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
Up, as they should for their purposes on NBC last
night during the Atlanta San Francisco game. I've heard sports
talk radio already pumping that well today and I don't know.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
I just can't get into it.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
And part of the reason is it's here, it's not
in Lambeau.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
That takes away some of the starts. In fact, I think.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
It's a rare angle that may work against the Steelers,
if anything, in this game, because I actually think the
Steelers are gonna win this one.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
I will tell you why in just a little bit.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
But Rodgers has been excellent playing within him so far
as the Steelers QB. He has pretty much already admitted
that this game against the Packers is likely to mean
more to him than the Jets game did. So does
that emotional component get him off his even keel that
he's been on all season? And does that make this
emotional mental ability that he's had to avoid mistakes he's
(03:21):
largely avoided having those pitfalls. Is that Conna blow up
in his face going against the Packers. I don't know,
but largely I think the Steelers flushed the opportunity of
dwelling on that Aaron Rodgers versus Green Bay storyline by
playing the way that they did Thursday night. Losing to
Cincinnati doesn't allow that storyline to be front and center.
(03:44):
The Steelers defense has stolen the spotlight for all the
wrong reasons. We'll get more into that with Tommy Radio
in just a second. But the Penguins won a game
two over the weekend. We should talk about that as well.
Tristan Jari and the Pens shut out Alex Nadelkovich and
the Sharks in San Jose three to nothing. I'll say
this though Alex Nadalkovich battled. He always battles. He battled
(04:06):
to that three nothing shut out. What a battler. But
he lost the battle. The Penguins won, and therefore and
two off, getting Malkin up to seven assists. I'll get
into that discussion with Brian Metzer the Penguins radio network.
At five thirty Penn State lost again. That seems right.
That was just a few hours after James Franklin went
on the air and acted surprise that he got fired
(04:27):
while he was on the air with College Game Day
on ESPN. The only surprising thing about Penn State football
at this point is that they haven't canceled the whole
season and just started selling hockey tickets for outdoor games
at Beaver Stadium.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
The Dodgers are in the World Series. That's not a surprise.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Toronto and Milwaukee, excuse me, Toronto and Seattle are playing
in a game seven. That's not a surprise either. I
thought that one was gonna go seven. I have Seattle.
We'll see how that goes. I'm actually surprised that Major
League Baseball isn't found a way yet to clone Showy
Aatani and give one version of him to each team
so people watchually watch the game. He was unbelievable with
(05:05):
that six inning, ten strikeout, three home run performance. That
still has the baseball world buzzing, and it still should
have all the sports world buzzing as well. Let's bring
in Tommy Radio right now. Tom are you like me
and looking at the Green Bay Steelers game and thinking
that the most obvious storyline of Rogers versus his former
(05:25):
team has already been pushed to the curb by how
badly the Steelers themselves played against Cincinnati.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
I do like the storyline more than you do. Tim
but you're right now, this takes on more of a
Steelers better win this game exact. Things could get out
of control real quickly if you lose this one to
Green Bay feel to it, and the defense doesn't really
inspire much confidence, especially when Josh Jacobs is a really
good running back and Jordan Love is a very good
quarterback coming in and they have good receivers as well,
(05:53):
so good offense coming into Akrosher Stadium. That's what's front
and center now. And I think you were spot on
when you said it. Not being in Lambeau changes things
a bit. Him going to Lambeau would be a lot
more story bookie.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Do you worry about Rogers getting too into this and
having a rare game where he might actually play outside
of himself because I think he's been quite good at
avoiding doing that, and certainly was against the Jets in
Week one.
Speaker 4 (06:15):
I don't know. I think he might be self aware
enough to see that he's playing really well, playing within himself,
and then that could translate to beating his former team,
the Packers, which I think he definitely wants to do.
I mean, look at the results. You're third in the
league in touchdown passes, right now with fourteen, and everybody
else who's in front of you has played more games
(06:36):
than you, Dak Prescott and Matthew Stafford. So you're playing
extremely well. You're putting up a lot of numbers, enough
that you think you could go out there and put
up enough points to beat the Packers. I don't think
he'll play outside of himself. The most outside of himself
moment we've seen was last week when he threw that
interception to DK Metcalf before the first half ended.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
Or when he launched into a tirade against Broderck Jones
for tackling him in celebration.
Speaker 4 (06:59):
I was with him on that. I was on Aaron
Rodgerson's side on it. Oh my, you gotta you can't
do that, buddy.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Speaking of that, this crossed my mind when I looked
at Michaeh Parson's performance.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
And we'll talk to Matt Williamson about this in the
three o'clock hour today, But if you look back to
what the Steelers did against Miles Garrett and how well
they shut him down, the obvious thing to then say
is do that again with Michaeh Parsons. So of course
(07:30):
my brain is going to the Steelers will do the
exact opposite because they know that we know that, they
know that we know.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
And now they're gonna leave Broderick Jones on an island
against Micah Parsons and he's gonna plant Aaron Rodgers into
the shaky sod at Akershuer Stadium.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
Boy, I fear that you might be correct there, because
we've seen such a track record of that being the case,
them zigging when they should just stay on the same.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
The only thing that makes me think I might be
wrong about that is it is such a conservative move
to play with as many all defensive lineman is humanly possible,
And I do think they think that's Steeler football, and
they just want to do that and lean into it
because they'll get the run game going. And this is
sixties Packers versus seventy Stillers and they're on a bad
field and throw back uniforms too, Oh, throwback unifors can't
(08:16):
forget about that as well.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
So you think that outweighs the tendency to they know
what I'm thinking. Lafleur's in my head. I'm not gonna
help on Parsons at all. Let's see how you think
about that.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
If they don't help on Parsons at all, though, then
they're just making it a one on one battle and
he's gonna win it every time.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
This is kind of foolish to talk about, right, There's
no way, there's no way. They just you know, leave
an island out there, whether it's Jones or Frattani wherever part.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
Well, did you think the Bengals gonna do that with TJ.
Watt anytime that there was a one on one match?
They didn't do it all the time he got shipped, sure,
and there was help, but whenever there wasn't, it didn't matter.
He's still lost most of those battles against Mims.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
I think that, well, they lost most of those battles
with Mints because he had to win him in one
point five seconds or else it was over because Flaca
was just getting rid of the ball so quickly. There's
probably to be an element of that.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Then, you know what, then don't pay TJ. Watt eighty
eight million dollars guarantee what you just did?
Speaker 4 (09:05):
You want to have that discussion right now? Sure, I'm
with you on that. I think that was funny.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
I got so tired of talking about that when the
walk contract.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
Thing was at its height this summers.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
If you talked about his stats, the immediate response from
Steeler Hanks, she said, you gotta.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
Sign him, you gotta sign him, is well, what is
he supposed to do?
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Other teams get rid of the ball so fast or
are they gonna stop doing that because.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
You paid him? That's what I'm worried about moving forward, seriously,
Like teams obviously saw how much that worked, and they
also see how much the Steelers secondary.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
Can't cover for one point five second, can't.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
Cover at all. So like, why wouldn't we just with
our quarterbacks that are better and in their prime as
opposed to Joe Flacco get rid of the ball quickly
like Jordan Love Daniel Jones justin Herbert, Like they should
all just be like I got two point five to
throw this thing, and even them, more so than Flacco,
are gonna have the ability to take off and run
(09:58):
and hurt the Steelers. I mean, you can neutralize what TJ.
Watt does so much by simply just avoiding it, by
simply just getting the ball out in a manner that
you would have to be superhuman to get home. And
you don't want to give that guy that much money,
especially if your secondary can't cover.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Like you said, what did you think about what Mike
Decursi said when he was on with us and he
mentioned that the Steelers media and fan base needs to
get off this conversation about trading for number two wide
receiver and shift the narrative to getting help in the secondary.
(10:37):
I would actually extend that conversation to help a defensive
line as well.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
Is he right or is he wrong? He sounded like
in back to School? Is he right? Is she right?
Is she right? That's what I intended to do in
the name right now for that famous comedian I can't remember.
He yells all the time. I don't know. But anyway,
Bob gold Wait, No, de Corsi is right. It's terrible
that I'm blanking on the name. De Corsi is right.
(11:04):
They need to upgrade in all those areas. I think
I'm an idiot. I think that wide receiver two is
still so at the top of the list for me,
even more so than the secondary. I mean, you improved
the secondary, like you took swings at that in the offseason,
and it's failing. You're gonna keep going at it. I
guess you have to same thing with the defensive line.
(11:26):
You invested draft capital in the defensive line, you got Harmon,
you got Yya Black. You did nothing when it came
to your receiving room. And you see how much it's
affecting them when Austin's hurt. All it takes is a
decay injury for them to have nothing to work with.
Now do you think that's the hitch?
Speaker 5 (11:44):
Now?
Speaker 4 (11:44):
What if they move forward with the tight ends acting
more like receivers like they did against Cincinnati, then maybe
I could be on de Coursey's side a little bit
more where Yeah, let's start to look at.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
The def Still doesn't solve the one if DK gets
hurt problem.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
Yeah, because then they just tight ends can't carry that
load as a number one unless you're Kelsey, which they
are not.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Yeah, they refuse to allow Friarmuth to be that, and
I don't think he could if they tried to put
him in that position.
Speaker 4 (12:07):
See you said that they're going to zig when it
comes to the protection against Parsons as opposed to what
worked with Garrett. Yeah, I totally see them putting Friarmith
back on the bench against the Packers and just kind
of him being on that paido mind list.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Oh, I think there have been pretty good indications that
that is very much in their thinking because the way
Tomlin talks, like, I don't know off the top of
my head how much zone Green Bay's defense plays versus
manned man, but.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
Because they always.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
Seem to couch what Pat does well by simply saying
zone killer, zone killer, zone killer, anytime they play a
team that plays more manned man, then they're comfortable with
he's going to be a ghost because they've talked themselves
into that niche and they've got these four guys and
they often play certain ways in certain games with game
(12:56):
plan specific things instead of just saying, Friarmuth is good
at catch the ball and running, so, like, you know,
get him out there to do that.
Speaker 4 (13:03):
You might be surprised. Like I know you were kind
of joking about Roman Wilson at the beginning of this segment,
but in all seriousness, you played him a little bit more,
you gave him a little bit more.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Targets, and he surprised you with a couple of catches.
Speaker 4 (13:16):
I mean one of them he was leaping over players
look very athletic picking up a first down, Like just
play them, let them play football. They'll surprise you.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
That's my opinion, especially you paid him.
Speaker 4 (13:29):
Yeah, it doesn't have to be this great science, you
know what I mean, Like, you don't have to be
this giant brain where it's like we got to put
him in the exact right position or else it won't work.
Just let him go out there, catch a football and
put a guy in the dirt with a stiff arm.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
What do you think their record will be after these
next three games? Now that you've seen two of the
teams play each other, and you've seen Green Bay where
they are coming into this game, what's the Steelers record
and who do they beat?
Speaker 4 (13:55):
I know they're five and four. I just don't know
who the one win is yet. I feel like it's
no other way they go three and oh or zero
and three. I think they're one and two. I'm leaning
if I had to choose one of those, I would
think more towards zero and three than three and oh.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (14:09):
I don't think they're winning all three. I don't think
they're winning all three games. I just have them at
one and two. I feel like the Packers. It just
kind of smells like a Steelers win, right, like that
classic after what we saw on Thursday night that classic
Steelers loss that always follows with the classic Steelers win. Right,
this kind of feels like it Sunday Night football, Rogers
old team. I could see them beating the Packers. I
(14:30):
guess the most logical one would still be the Colts
to say that they'd win that game. But at some
point you just gotta admit, like, the Colts are really
one of the best teams in football and could win
the AFC. So I don't know where that win comes from.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
I should they put so much weight on Daniel Jones
not being all that good just because the Giants couldn't
figure him.
Speaker 4 (14:48):
Out, you know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (14:49):
Like, at some point I have to get away from
that and say he really might be good.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
And this is on the Giants. Yeah, And also think
back when he made the playoffs and won the playoffs
with the Giants. They had a good offensive line, they
had a solid defense, but they had the best running
back in football in Saquon Barkley entered Jonathan Taylor with
the Indianapolis Colts in twenty twenty five. It's him or
Bjeon Robinson as far as I'm concerned, as the best
running back in football. He's got a really good formula
that we've seen kind of work for Daniel Jones before.
(15:14):
They're gonna be Green Bay and then they'll lose to
the Colts and the Chargers, they're.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
Gonna lose to the Colts. I don't like that coaching matchup.
We've seen that fish before. And the Charger game, I
don't know about. Depends on what the Chargers are at
health wise. If their line is still in shambles and
they don't have their running backs back, I think the
Steelers can have a good shot.
Speaker 4 (15:32):
At the same time, we.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
All thought that the Bengals offensive line was a bad
matchup against the Steelers front seven, and what.
Speaker 4 (15:37):
Of that proof Herbert threw for four hundred and twenty
yards and three touchdowns and the loss against the Colts.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
Without his top two wide receivers doing anything. They took
away the top two wide receivers and he turned a
Rondez Gadgsten into Kellen Wilson Will Winslow.
Speaker 4 (15:49):
Yeah, So he's just gonna take whatever the Steelers give him.
And based on the Sinsy game, the Steelers give you
a lot with that secondary. So oh and three more
likely than three and zero, one two. Most likely. I
have a tough time seeing two and one, but two
and one would be like perfect, That would be like, Okay,
you're fine. Now let's navigate the next portion of the schedule.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
I'm gonna say, I'm gonna say one and two, but
I'm gonna say they beat Green Bay because this is
just a game that they always tend to win. They
always tend to win this game after a terrible loss
at home, primetime home game, NFC opponent. The storyline, for
whatever it's worth with Rogers, he won it once already,
(16:29):
I think it win it again this time. Steelers win
this week despite all the talk of their demise and
maybe the Packers cresting. This is the kind of game
the Steelers win. The next two are up for grabs,
but I bet you they lose to the Colts, and
then the Chargers really becomes a swing game. And you
know what, it feels right, that could be a huge
(16:49):
swing game two in terms of playoff positioning too.
Speaker 4 (16:52):
That feels right. They'll win this one, lose the Colts.
Everything will kind of be on the line of my
hunts just to say they lose it. But I'm not
marrying myself to that yet like you win that Chargers game,
you win the AFC North.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
I think you made a really good point. Let's see
where they both are health wise in two weeks. Let's
see where they both are style of play wise in
two weeks. But my hunt right now is to say
one and two. With the win coming this week against
Green Bay, you.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
Go one and two. It becomes a little tight about
that division. It depends on what the Baltimore. If Baltimore
stubs their toe again though, it can help you, but
what if they win the next three.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
When we come back, we'll talk a little bit about
what James Franklin had to say on college game Day.
We'll talk about the Penguins some too. A fantastic trifecta
coming up before the top of the hour as well.

Speaker 2 (19:37):
All right, Tom, what did you think of the James
Franklin interview on ESPN College Game Day? Because let's be honest,
what happens with the Penn State football team at this
point is irrelevant they are on the field results. Actually,
I'll go so far as to say this, I am
ten times more interested in where James Franklin goes than
who is replaced by.
Speaker 4 (19:58):
Honestly, I agree with that.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
I think the dominoes of where he goes and who
hires him first to me is there's a lot more
dynamics that play there than who replaced him, because it's
just gonna be Matt Rule or some of the other
names that I've heard about, Like, I'm underwhelmed by pretty
much unless Saban goes to Penn State.
Speaker 4 (20:20):
Which is not happening, Matt Rule or Urban Meyer losing
to Minnesota. By the way, the week after all the
buzzes in the air about him and going to Penn
State and Franklin being fired, like, yeah, that's a good idea.
Hire the guy that can't even beat Minnesota. What if
UCLA goes and beats Signetti on the road in Bloomington.
It was a little shaky start for Signetti against Michigan
(20:42):
State this weekend, and I was thinking, oh my god,
it would just be so perfect for him to get
that contract and then Sparty to roll in there and
pull the upset that did not happen, though they took
control of that game. I agree with you about where
Franklin goes is the more intriguing part, because now he's
the guy right like, he is the number one coach
in this cycle, and I don't really foresee anybody else
(21:04):
opening up that would be that unless, like you said,
a legend like Saban, which is't gonna happen, would throw
his hat back in the ring. Maybe Brian Kelly gets
fired from LSU if they missed the playoffs, but too hard.
I wouldn't do that if i'm him, Franklin and Kelly.
I mean, it's kind of neck and neck as far
as who the guy is, I might lean towards Franklin there.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
I want to play the SoundBite of him on college
game day with Herbstreet and company.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
How'd we get here so quickly?
Speaker 6 (21:30):
Yeah, I can't answer that, to be honest with you,
I'm still working through it myself. It feels surreal. I
just got a message, you know, from Drew Aller's dad
that he's sitting home as well. We both should be
in Iowa. It's what we used were used to doing
and how we operate, and I've been doing this for
thirty years and fifteen years as a head coach. To think, essentially,
(21:53):
six games ago, we were fighting for a chance to
be in the national Championship a two minute drive away.
So that's the thing I really can't answer that, Kirk.
Twelve years, a ton of good moments, a bunch of
big wins, but decisions were made and I'm not involved
in those decisions. I'm very, very grateful for the time
(22:15):
I had it, most importantly for the relationships.
Speaker 4 (22:17):
I was able to build.
Speaker 6 (22:19):
I thought we were gonna win a national championship there,
we were close.
Speaker 4 (22:23):
That goal hasn't changed.
Speaker 6 (22:25):
We're just gonna go win a national championship somewhere else now, hell.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
No, right, hell yeah, McAfee, hell yeah, hell yeah.
Speaker 4 (22:32):
I love how Franklin slid in there that I wasn't
a part of those decisions. Really, you aren't a part
of your firing yourself and even put in that one, James.
Speaker 3 (22:41):
I also like the quarterbacks. Dad still likes me the quarterbacks.
Speaker 4 (22:46):
Dad still texted me exactly like, Hey, Penn State fans,
I didn't lose faith at the quarterback he's.
Speaker 2 (22:51):
Telling everybody else out there, looked, I still get along
with the players and their parents.
Speaker 4 (22:54):
You can hire me. Locker room's fine, and my relationship's good.
Like I don't have let me rephrase that.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
The problem that I have with the question that set
that up from Herb Street was, and to be fair,
we didn't put the whole preamble into it.
Speaker 4 (23:07):
It was a long preamble and I wanted to get
through it.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
He asked that question from the standpoint, we said quickly
talking about the fact it was just a few weeks
ago that they were playing Oregon in overtime and you know,
the number two team in the country.
Speaker 4 (23:19):
But this didn't happen. Quilp was going.
Speaker 7 (23:22):
On his entire ten uere what's the record? The graphics
for turn it up on the screen four and twenty
one did not just happen. This didn't just happen. Now,
where's he gonna win this national championship? So you brought
up LSU. Potentially some people have said they're gonna he's
gonna wind up in Wisconsin.
Speaker 4 (23:40):
He doesn't want to go back to the Big Ten.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
He'll get out.
Speaker 4 (23:43):
It'll be the SEC or the ACC. Virginia Tech will
beat the school in the ACC. I would come hard
at him if I was Virginia Tech. He already give out.
Florida State. Florida or Florida State is an intriguing one too.
Florida's SEC. Florida State's not open yet, but there's no
will being Norvell survives this season. He's owing four right
now in the Commerce. He just lost Stanford, for God's sake,
so he's done. I think Virginia Tech would be just
(24:06):
ripe for there. He already has it. He already has
that pretty much on lock. It would just be, hey,
don't come to Penn State, come to Virginia Tech. He
could sell that atmosphere too. It's not as Penn State,
but it's got history with it.
Speaker 2 (24:18):
The beautiful thing about it is then it becomes beating
Miami and Clemson as opposed to Michigan.
Speaker 3 (24:28):
Good one.
Speaker 4 (24:29):
It's a good one.
Speaker 3 (24:32):
Oh, I didn't see that coming.
Speaker 2 (24:33):
We can put Syracuse in there too, No, we cannot, No,
we absolutely cannot.
Speaker 3 (24:37):
Eddy Johnson again.
Speaker 4 (24:38):
At the end of the half, it's the Miami's, the Clemsons,
the Florida States. Now that become your big dogs. But
like they're not that big Dog anymore. Like all five said.
Speaker 3 (24:47):
Davo should be done at Clemson. I don't disagree with them,
and we didn't take the Clemson job. Then Miami on
Friday goes to Penn State and James Franklin goes to Clemson.
See this is what I'm talking about.
Speaker 2 (24:59):
It's so much more interesting to talk about it from
a Franklin angle than it is a Penn State angle.
Speaker 4 (25:04):
Yeah, because I think the Penn State highre is just
going to be really boring. What if they hire the
Vanderbilt coach, go the same exact route they did with James,
I'd be ironic. He's actually good though, Like make me
the cycle. He's more successful there at Vanderbilt than Franklin
was at Vanderbilt young defensive assistance. What the Steelers did
with Cower and m right, it actually might not be
(25:25):
the wrong higher or excuse me, it might be the
right higher right now. I bet you they'd be scared
off of it though, because it'd be the hiring the
Vanderbilt coach again.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
Okay, something very weird happened during the Penguin game. Something
really sloppy happened during the Penguin game, and it didn't
come from Eric Carlson or crys Latang.
Speaker 4 (25:42):
That's next in one o five nine the X one
oh five nine, The X as your shot at X
drug Cash. See what I did there.
Speaker 1 (25:50):
Thirteen times a day through nine pm, d X will
give you the keyword at the top of every hour.
Enter it at wxdx dot com and you could win
one thousand dollars.
Speaker 4 (26:00):
With that much money, you could buy like ten coffees.
You know what.
Speaker 1 (26:03):
I was homeschooled. I'm not good at enough. Listen all
day for your chance. Had some extra cash. On one
oh five.
Speaker 3 (26:09):
Nine, the X hits Bunny Diver and I just love
good news. Okay, So this is a great story I
just heard about on.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
An expanding coverage of the Mark Madden Show. Back by
the personal injury experts Shandorovich, Shandorovich and Fishman.
Speaker 4 (26:26):
They've got your back, not your wallet.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
The good folks, the San Jose Sharks might need Shandorovich,
Shandarovitch and Fishman. I'll just see what happened Tom during
the game between the Sharks and the Penguins on Saturday night.
Speaker 4 (26:39):
I did now after you include me in in the
commercial break.
Speaker 3 (26:43):
So it was let me get this exactly right here.
Speaker 2 (26:46):
Hispanic Heritage Night for the San Jose Sharks against the
Penguins on Saturday. And during the course of Hispanic Heritage Night,
somebody on the JumboTron when they did one of those
montag of messages that you can send from your phone
to go on the big screen, somebody sent in the
following quote, which was San Jose Sharks fans love ice,
(27:11):
get them boys, not.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
Ice like ice hockey. Are you sure about that ice
like ice that is going after people who just sit
for the sake of argument.
Speaker 4 (27:22):
Might be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Night. We're sure they're not
talking about the ice.
Speaker 3 (27:27):
And I love the fact that katvu dot com. Fox
two in the Greater Bay Area interviewed a man by
the name of Daniel Gomz of Fremont, who said, I'm
really surprised to see that at a Sharks game.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
I'm a big Sharks fan. Very inappropriate and honestly, the
Sharks should do better. They should do some pre checks
before any of the messages go out.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
I'm sure there are a lot of people in the
arena that night where were pretty surprised by that message.
Speaker 2 (27:54):
To this, I'm surprised anybody noticed, because like when those
things go up in the jump.
Speaker 4 (27:57):
A like, who actually looks at those you're in the
line getting a right, or you're looking at your phone.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
They're gonna be nineteen thousand people at that building. And
if you told me that all nineteen thousand people weren't
looking at that, I wouldn't be surprised.
Speaker 4 (28:08):
But I guess enough people didn't. Now, if there is
no screening process, like how many bad messages have gotten
up there at San Jose Sharks games that we haven't
noticed to your point, that have just kind of been
like a tree falling into forest that no one heard.
Speaker 3 (28:18):
Well, Metzer and I you're gonna hear from Mets at
five thirty.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
We were theorizing that they've got some sort of AI
or bot that like checks the message.
Speaker 4 (28:27):
They can put ice in it.
Speaker 3 (28:28):
They just take ice hot thing surface and it just
lets it right through and nobody looks at it.
Speaker 4 (28:33):
Go get them boys.
Speaker 3 (28:35):
Now.
Speaker 2 (28:35):
The difference is when the Pirates do that, because the
Pirates have those messages that go out of the Jumbo
Tron two, there's four thousand people in the stands. They
can check everyone. It doesn't matter, like you know, maybe
the Penguins brought a big crowd.
Speaker 4 (28:46):
I don't know. I'm pretty sure at Pirate games, those
are team employees that have to send in those texts
because no one's playing ball in the arena like in
the stadium.
Speaker 3 (28:53):
Love you Bucks. Why does that say? From iPhone?
Speaker 4 (29:01):
Right? Nutting family playing one, having the best night at
the ballpark with my team, best team in baseball, Love
the Pirates, I love pup.
Speaker 2 (29:12):
Night from missus Nutting. All right, we come back, Tommy Radio.
Is quite the I think divisive trifecta for us to digest.
I think there's gonna be a lot of disagreement on
this one. And in fact, I don't even know which
direction you've decided to go on this. You could go left,
you could go right. I don't know which way you're
gonna go, But either way people are gonna fight about it.
(29:32):
This next one of five nine The X The Only Show.
Speaker 5 (29:35):
Mark Madden, all the Penns games, wherever you are and
totally free on the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (29:41):
One oh five nine The X from the one oh
five nine The ex Weather Center, Mark Madden and.
Speaker 4 (29:48):
Tom Upferman on the X.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
Time for the trifecta, Right now, Tommy radio, What do
we have for the trifecta?
Speaker 4 (29:58):
Since we have a Game seven tonight in baseball, Tim,
I think we should go down memory lane when it
comes to Game seven's around Pittsburgh sports teams.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
Oh, this is good, and by the way, it's sponsored
by Danny's Pizza and Hogies, Pittsburgh's original oven baked hogy
since nineteen sixty Route eighty eight in Bethel Park. Now,
of course, since there is no NBA team here, we're
kind of limited to just two sports, but there's still
plenty to choose from. Are we doing Game seven defeats
or are we doing Game seven triumphs.
Speaker 4 (30:27):
I think we should do both of them, because I
lean towards doing defeats, but I don't want to be
accused of being a sour puss. So we can lift
list off the triumphs as well, But let's start with
the defeats. Number three on the list has to be
ninety six Fitzgerald fifty eight foot slapper behind Tom Barrasso
in the East Finals against the Florida Panthers, sending the
(30:48):
Florida Panthers to the Stanley Cup to face off against
I believe the Colorado Avalanche that year.
Speaker 3 (30:53):
True, I don't know if it has to be, but
we'll get into that.
Speaker 4 (30:56):
Keep going. Number two is Volk in ninety three against
the Penguins the Islanders, of course, beating what many people
think might be the best Penguins team in team history.
Of course they did not win, though, But Number one
as far as the bad game seven moments, and this
is number one by a mile, Sidbream against the Pirates
Atlanta Braves.
Speaker 3 (31:16):
We all know, Yeah, it ruined a franchise.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
It ruined an entire team. It didn't just ruin a season.
It ruined a franchise.
Speaker 4 (31:23):
Sure, they have never been the same. You're right, you know.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
It was so bad that in our conversations we had
to remind ourselves that we should also talk about Game
seven at home in Pittsburgh the year before, when Smoltz
shut them out on six hits in a four nothing game.
But that's so buried by what happened the next year,
since the next year was so incredibly heartbreaking that Game
(31:45):
seven in ninety one. That was the better team, no
doubt about it. That was the better team.
Speaker 4 (31:51):
Now, you said you had some debate when it came
to Fitzgerald's goal in ninety six against the Penguins. Yeah,
because that's number three in my lifetime, as I remember, Yes,
I would do for my lifetime.
Speaker 2 (32:02):
I would do the three that you did in that
exact order, Okay, But I would also point out that
the seventy five, so I guess technically was my lifetime,
but I was one. But the seventy five blown three
nothing lead against the Islanders, that game seven should probably
(32:22):
be number three.
Speaker 4 (32:24):
Yeah, probably, and Mark would be able to wait. Mark
would make that at least he'd make it on that
for sure, and he'd weigh in more about, like, you know,
the details around it, but just thinking about blowing a
three to zero lead, Tim, don't you kind of go
into game seven already defeated under them circumstances.
Speaker 3 (32:39):
Like you basically nobody just drives it home all the more,
you know.
Speaker 4 (32:42):
I guess it does. You do have to actually go
out and lose that game. But he kind of knew
what was gonna happen, whereas like Volik or Fitzgerald, like
you went into that game seven not thinking like, oh, well,
we've just collapsed three straight games. We have no shot
in this one.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
I think that Fitzgerald game the seventy five game and
the ninety one game are all pretty good candidates for
this list to get the bronze medal.
Speaker 3 (33:04):
But silver and gold are they are beyond reproach?
Speaker 4 (33:08):
Well, gold, I mean Bream should just have all three
on this list, to be honest with you, one, two,
and three. As you said, the franchise of the Pittsburgh
Pirates has literally gone in the tank, starting with Sidbream
sliding safely across that plate. What would you do in
terms of victories? I think you'd have to go with
the nineteen seventy nine Pirates win over the Orioles in
Game seven in that World Series for number three. Number
(33:28):
two would then have to be the Penguins against Detroit
in nine flurries save, and then number one. Similarly to
Bream being number one in the negative by a long shot,
the positive one has to be Mas's home run against
the Yankees in nineteen sixty and that's got to be
number one by a long shot. I mean, Tim, we
can look at Game seven moments from a national perspective,
(33:51):
and mass is going to have a claim there's none better. Yeah, right,
So I mean, like not that obviously should be the
local number one two. I agree with that list one
hundred percent. There is more debate, I suppose on the
loser list, because like we didn't even talk about yet.
For instance, the Canadians coming in here and closing Melon
Arena the year after the Penguins won the Cup and
(34:11):
the Flurry save. Yeah, in two thousand and nine.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
That was a pretty bitter loss, but because the Penguins
then went on to win a couple more cups. You
can't bring back Melon Arena, but they still won a
couple more cups. During the Sid era, you know, there
was a while there where it felt like it was
going to be a black hole, and they did lose
some Game sevens, like that zero for seven on the
power play against Tampa Bay in twenty eleven, when everybody
(34:38):
was yeah, Rollie the goalie.
Speaker 4 (34:41):
Yeah, but Gino and Sid weren't even playing there, so
that we were just kind of happy to be in
that series.
Speaker 3 (34:44):
You know.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
There was the Spicy Pork in Brocco League give Sway
to Tristan jar in his bad.
Speaker 4 (34:49):
Foot Broyes, where Jari actually played maybe his best playoff
performance of his career, right exactly.
Speaker 2 (34:56):
There are some great game seven wins for Penguins, but
they were all in conference semifinals or conference finals, which
you know, I guess for the younger generation that have
no clue what nineteen seventy nine meant.
Speaker 3 (35:11):
For we are a family.
Speaker 2 (35:12):
You know, maybe you take the games against Ovechkin in
the conference semifinals in twenty seventeen or twenty oh nine
and say those games were better. Maybe if that Benino
game or you know, the pucks going over the glass
the year before that in twenty sixteen, maybe if that
had been a conference final as opposed to a semifinal,
(35:32):
or a game seven instead of a game six like first,
if that had been a game seven, Okay, maybe that
makes the list, But I think that's a generational thing,
and really it shouldn't be because that's the last World
Series we're ever gonna see period.
Speaker 4 (35:46):
Yeah right, See, those ones that you just described are
obviously more prescient for me as far as a memory,
like I went, I witnessed those games. I didn't witness
the nineteen seventy nine World Series against the Orioles. But
I just think when you're doing these lists, you kind
of have the default too. If a moment happened in
a championship round. That just adds to the weight of it.
And then if we're talking about game seven's in a
(36:07):
championship round, I mean, there is no greater pressure spot
in sports.
Speaker 2 (36:11):
And you talked about the mass thing again, as I mentioned,
it's a generational thing, but that spans generations here. I mean,
they kept the wallup, for God's sakes. That's got to
count for something, doesn't it.
Speaker 4 (36:22):
Oh, no doubt, And they still do. I don't know
how many young kids go out to this, but they
still do that event. They just did it last week
where they listened to the radio broadcast at the site
of Forbes Field.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
I didn't do that this year, but I did it
last year for the first time. And it's more fun
than you think. And you know, one thing that they
do is.
Speaker 3 (36:39):
They play the entire real radio call of that and
the entire real radio call, which is since this year
actually been submitted to the Library of Congress for the archives.
They kept the mistakes of the final play by play
call in there. Did you know if there were mistakes
in the final play by play call? Yeah, it's like
(37:00):
and it's jarring.
Speaker 2 (37:00):
I almost missed the home run by Masarowski because who
is at Chuck Thompson, I think who was doing the
play by play. He referred to Ralph White the pitcher,
as Ralph Terry, sorry, the pitcher as Dittmeyer, who was
the pitcher warming up the bullpen, and he just had
like a Freudian slip because he had mentioned him warming
up the bullpen and he mentioned the bullpen guy's name
(37:21):
is so the guy who's actually on the mound, and
like it catches you, you go win a minute.
Speaker 4 (37:25):
That's not the guy who's pitching.
Speaker 3 (37:26):
And then Mask hits the homer, and in the moment
of celebration he says they won the game ten to nothing. Well,
obviously they don't win the game ten to nothing because
he just walked him off. It's ten to nine as
a ten run homer, which you know what if the
Pirates could hit ten run homers, now, Tom, I'd like
their chances a lot more going into next season. But
I still don't think that's allowed.
Speaker 4 (37:45):
You're right, that moment is going to live on. It's
going to pass down from generations to generations, not just
because home run in the World Series Game seven, But
don't you think it's because it beat the Yankees? Harry, Yes, absolutely,
hate the Yankees.
Speaker 3 (37:59):
Who the Yankees were that year.
Speaker 2 (38:01):
They were like the ultimate Goliath and the Pirates were
like the little engine that they're good peak.
Speaker 4 (38:06):
Of evil Empire Yankees.
Speaker 2 (38:07):
And you look at that World Series based on how
badly the Pirates lost in the three games that they
lost for them to win that game, and there was
so much back and forth in that game.
Speaker 4 (38:16):
They were in front, they blew the lead, they got
the lead back, and I mean their run DIFFERENTI was
like minus fifteen or something, wasn't it in that World Series.
That's good enough to lead the ANFC North champs. All right,
in thirty seconds we get back to the Steelers. You
could comment on this too if you want eight three, three, four,
one two ninety nine, thirty nine, if you want to
talk some game seven as well, with the game seven
(38:37):
in the ALCS tonight. This is one of five nine
the X Now it's your chance to win.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
One thousand dollars just entered this nationwide keyword on our
website
