(00:13):
A little after four, and Ijust ran into mister Dallas. He's already
here. What and he's saying thathe's got a few quick hits today.
Choke him. Now, I don'tknow what that means, you guys,
I never know. Yeah, yeah, we do, we do. I
mean I I don't really care forhim. Yeah, I don't think he

(00:37):
likes me either. So I thinka lot of times you guys are very
similar, I think, but notalways. But so maybe that's why,
Okay, maybe that's what's going onthere. Maybe that's why we have the
troubles that we do. I usedto hate people who were like me,
for sure. I get it.Okay, well you know where I'm coming
from here then anyway, he sayshe's got a few quick hits for us

(01:02):
about Dallas coming up here in justa little bit. Whatever that means with
him, who knows. But thereis one thing I do know, and
that is this. This is thebest damn, oh my gosh, snort

(01:23):
in there is that from today?Julie snorted today? She did? I
missed it. That was a piggys groovy. Didn't hear it? It
didn't happen. Damn, I don'tremember what, Yeah, she definitely snorted.
Sort. Well, he'll go backand find it. Believe me,
the devil will go back and findit. That's why he's the devil.

(01:45):
Well, I do think. So. The NFL Draft is nine days away,
and I've spent about fifteen years doinga lot of talking about Cowboys football,
so we will hit everything there isto talk about today about the Cowboys.
But I also think it's really excitingthat if you heard the sports desk
at two thirty, or I guessif you didn't, it won't change what

(02:06):
I'm about to tell you. Butthe Rangers are calling up Jack Lighter,
which I think is a super coolturnaround for a guy that six months ago
it was like, hey, ifyou could trade him for literally anything that
could help your baseball team feel free. It looked like something between when he
was drafted number two overall out ofVanderbilt, something from there to minor league

(02:29):
baseball just got lost and he lostthe ability to throw strikes, he lost
the ability to be a good pitcher, and this prospect ranking was going down
and down, and it looked kindof like a lost cause. And then
apparently he threw well in spring trainingand in the miners. He's striking out
a ton of people, he's notwalking people, and he's getting called up

(02:50):
to the big Boy League because they'restruggling a little bit pitching. Bradford's hurt
and he's going to start the seriesfinale against Detroit on thirty. The Great
Jacklider is going to make his firstbig league appearance. So I want to
know, how do you feel aboutit, Mike, because I am trying

(03:10):
not to be excited, because fortwo years I got all of my Jack
Lider excitement zapped over and over againuntil I had none left. And now
the spark is back. I'm kindof in that same boat. But on
top of that, I've seen thishappen over the years with so many guys

(03:35):
that the Rangers haven't drafted high ortraded for or something like that. They've
gone and trade for somebody else's prospectworking through the farm system, and by
the time he gets called up here, you're really excited about him because he's
had success in the minor leagues, and then he gets up here and it
just does not happen. I thinkI've kind of weaned myself off the idea

(04:03):
that you know that a guy likethis is going to come in and have
immediate success. That said, though, he was touted so highly when he
was first drafted, and then hegot into the minor leagues and had such
a rough go of it, andnow he seems to have turned the thing

(04:26):
around, And I want to think, and I kind of think, we
have to think, we have tohope anyway that the thing that made him
turn the thing back around and getheaded in the right direction was he refocused.
He started to put in the workin a way that he hadn't previously,
and now we may be about tosee the results of that. So

(04:50):
yeah, from that standpoint, it'sexciting. Yeah, I still my hopes
for Jack Lder are coming back. And I guess I've always been the people
you're around tend to influence you.So for a lot of my watching the
Rangers and thinking about their prospects andwho might be coming one day, I

(05:15):
think a lot of my thinking wasprobably influenced by a guy I worked with
for quite a while. His nameis Mike Basseck, and he know him.
He's a former major league pitcher whospent more time in the minors,
and like when you talk about prospects, he would just be like, I
don't care. They're prospects. Idon't care. Yeah, And I reached
a point of being that way toopretty much, and I ended up kind

(05:38):
of adopting that too, because thereare just so many guys over the years
that they talk about, you know, they put number grades on the tools
that guys have, and it's like, well, this guy's tools, he's
going to be this and that, and I look and I'm like, right
in, then he's in the minorleague right now, and he sucks.
And so until I see a guythat people tell me is really good,
and then I can look it upand be like, oh, and he's

(05:59):
playing good bay. You know, when they would talk about guys like that,
they tell you he's gonna be thisand that, and they're talking about
all the things that he can't thathe can do, right is which when
it's not reflected in him playing baseballin minor leagues, I just go,
Okay, yeah, we'll see yeahChurch and profar, but but yeah,
that's he was supposed to be greatone stud yes, And I was like,
but he's not good in the miners. When's he going to be good

(06:20):
in the miners? And it's likeWow, but his tools And I'm like,
the tools don't get to play, the player plays. Yeah, is
he gonna be good? A lotof the time. They get going all
this stuff on all this stuff aguy can do. They don't tell you
what he can't do. Yeah, they don't tell you what his deficiencies are,
and they don't tell you what it'sgoing to take to correct those deficiencies.
And they sure don't tell you whetherhe's got it in him to work,

(06:44):
put in the work and correct thosedeficiencies. Well, Jack Lder's been
rocking and rolling in the minors sofar. I mean, because he's having
a great year for sure, fromwhat we see just right now today.
He deserves this. Yeah, heis worthy of this. Yeah, he's
striking out a bunch of dudes. He's not walking dudes. He has giving

(07:06):
up some home runs. But ifyou're just talking about on the whole,
the whip got a wonderful whip.Yeah, sub one, And you know
what in this game today, guyshit home runs. Yeah, it's true.
Guys hit home runs like they neverhave before. Guys that you wouldn't
think could hit home runs too, except our guys. So so after what

(07:30):
two years since he was drafted.Being in the minors at this point,
obviously there's a need for a pictureright now. Is it more that he's
ready or is it more that theRangers need help? But maybe the perfect
confluence of both. It's both. It's that, you know, if you

(07:51):
had, like in a world wherethe Rangers brought back Jordan Montgomery and no
one was hurt, I don't thinkwe would be seeing Jack Lider right now.
Yeah, but I'll know you onebetter. If Cody Bradford could get
out there, I don't know ifwe'd be seeing him right now. Right
that's essentially who he's replacing, Yeah, pretty much. Yeah, And the
fact that they're just so many guysaren't giving him great starts, and you're

(08:15):
wearing on a bullpen and might aswell try, Like, let's bring up
a guy that if it goes poorly, at least he gave us some innings.
He goes like, Because this isthe question I wonder, Mike,
just gut feeling, is this apermanent call up? Is Jack Lighter here

(08:35):
or is Jack Lider going to makea start and then head back down.
I think the only way he goesback down is if he's really bad,
and the start does not go wellat all, and it's apparent to everybody
that he is just not ready forthis. Then he goes back down.
If he's okay, he'll get anotherstart. Even if he's okay, but

(09:00):
there's a little bit more bad thangood. I think we'll get another start.
They're in first place, but it'sbecause the division has has been really
bad. So Farson's just broken down. There are five hundred teams, so
are the Angels. Everybody else hasbeen bad so far, and so like
part of me, I like thatJack Lighter's getting called up because it kind
of reignites the ooh yeah, theJulie Monkey. Yeah, regn oh,

(09:26):
it gives me and oop because like, Whyae Langford hasn't given me that so
far this year? Evan Carter hasn'tbeen great so far this year. Corey
Seeger hasn't been hidden for power yetthis year. There's a lot of and
then the whole of the pitching staffYou're just like, oh, goodness,
gracious. So I wonder, like, would a pro sports team care about
that? The hey, you know, the general buzz he might be deserving

(09:50):
and people would go yay, yeah, I don't know. I would be
seeing this if they still had allthose other guys that we just mentioned,
they could still get out there ifthey were still pitching. The whole deal
with like a prospect like this is, you have to do it the right
way, right And that's why theyhaven't called him up to this point,
because you need him to have thetime down in the miners and to feel

(10:15):
like he's ready and not call himup too early and then blow it.
You want guys in the miners tohave some success. Yeah, and when
they do get called up, they'vegot a little success to fall back on.
They can look back on what madethem successful down to the miners,
and I think there's something to besaid for that idea. Yeah, you
don't want to David Clyde a guy. Hopefully they're not just calling him up
because of the circumstances right now.And like you said, we need a

(10:39):
little buzz, like let's get peopletalking about us again. It might be
these other rookies aren't doing too much. It might be all the perfect confluence.
Yeah, people, all of that. He's had some success and people
would like it. I'm sure that'snot a factor. It's just where part
of my brain went to Yeah, well, AnyWho Jack will throw on Thursday

(11:01):
and that will be fun. Iwill be locked in. It's the best
damn sports segment period. You're tunedinto ninety seven to one. The freak
little bit of Cowboys stuff for you. Today, Stephen Jones was on with
My Friends, the K and CMasterpiece over on the Fan, and he

(11:22):
talked about a couple of different thingsinvolving the current Cowboys roster. And one
of the things, because a lotof times when you get a Jones talking,
basically what you can do is readthe quote and then tee off on
them. But he talked about what'sgoing on with the Cowboys offensive line,
and I'll just read the answer hesaid. We just think you have to

(11:46):
continue to evolve as an offensive line. Certainly, you hate to lose a
player like Tyron Smith, who's,in my opinion, going to be a
Hall of Famer. I think he'sgoing to be wearing a yellowjacket. But
at the same time, unfortunately Tyron'shad to miss a lot of games and
at some point you have to makethose tough decisions. Certainly, you hate
to lose Tyler Biattish at center interms of what he had done for us.

(12:07):
But at some point there you've gotto make a tough decision that we
can have him go to another teamand we can replace him and hopefully have
a center who's better. Which wasa fun little shot fired, Like he
knew he couldn't say be better atleft tackle, but he's like, maybe
be better. We like the youngguys that we brought in over the years,
not unlike Connor McGovern he stepped upafter being a backup for three years.

(12:31):
He stepped up and played really goodat guard, got awarded a contract
in Buffalo. We have guys likeMatt will lets Go and a sim Richards,
young players who were on the come. TJ. Bass played really well
for us last year. Obviously, they're guys are fans aren't as acquainted with
as much because they hadn't played asmuch. But we feel like they can
step up, not unlike Tyler didas a rookie at center and play really

(12:52):
well. And for once, AJones gave an answer and I go,
I don't totally disagree with him.No, I don't either, not totally.
Yeah, I hear that, andI think, okay, there there
is a level of player in theNFL that I think as an organization,
it's your job to replace them whenthey're contract's up. And I do think

(13:16):
that Tyler Beattish the Cowboys old center. I think he fit that, whereas
like, was he a capable NFLcenter? Yeah? Is he the sort
of player that I want to paywell on a second contract? No,
it's just a matter of I've seenTJ. Bass play. I've seen He

(13:39):
also talked about the center spot wherehe thinks that if they don't find one
in the draft, that they havea couple of guys already on the team,
Brock Kaufman and TJ. Bass, and that one of them could do
the job. They That's that's thehard part, right. Obviously the team
knows more than us dummies. No, but I have seen them play,

(14:01):
and when I've seen them play, they've been worse than Tyler Biaddish. And
so you know, it's kind ofa roundabout to the same thing over and
over again. As we're waiting ninedays to figure out who are the guys
that they're gonna pick in the first, second, and third rounds of a
draft, and if they do comeout of there and they're short and offensive

(14:24):
lineman or two, every team hasto do this at different spots where you
go, look, we've picked guysbefore, guys that we have drafted before.
Because what's gonna happen is the Cowboy'sgonna do their whole NFL draft,
and there's gonna be guys who talkabout guys that they pick in the fourth,
fifth, not the fourth. Theydon't have a pick the fifth,
sixth, seventh rounds, and they'llbe included when people start talking about,

(14:46):
well, we're okay linebacker because wegot so and so in the fifth round.
And I'm like, you, guysknow that you have guys from the
fifth round playing linebacker from three yearsago that are on other team's practice squads
and they didn't. They don't pretend, but we do it every rookie class.
When they're a rookie boy, he'sgoing to do something. Ignore them
if you hit on the third dayof the draft. Sweet And I wonder

(15:07):
if other organizations and other fan basesor as bad about that as the Cowboys.
I think everything's magnified. There's amindset out there that just because the
Cowboys drafted guy right in the fifthround, he's gonna be a Pro Bowl
guy someday. Yeah, then Devinwhat's his name from Oklahoma State three years

(15:28):
ago, Devin Harper should be playinglinebacker for the Cowboys. But most of
the time, third day picks theydon't turn into NFL starters, doesn't the
vast majority don't. The Cowboys fedsome really good ones. Uh, Doron
Bland was a third day pick workedout great? It happens sometimes. Yeah,
But when you're looking at what theCowboys are going to put on the
field next year and you're trying toproject that whatever draft picks are going to

(15:56):
do whatever, keep in mind thatif you're projecting that you're going to have
three guys that are going to bequality NFL starters, you're shooting for the
move. Yeah, that would berare unless your team sucks and you need
so many things and you pick fifteenguys and then there's just all these spots

(16:21):
available. But if you think thatyou're going to replace what the Cowboys have
lost with their draft picks, that'scrazy. And that's why I have a
problem with what he said. Andthat's why I there, in my opinion,
is a problem with not retaining somebodylike Tyler Battish, because you have

(16:42):
to weigh the situation that you're currentlyin. Yes, he said that the
offensive line continues to evolve, likewhich is the most generic vague. Yes,
that means that could mean anything.Your whole team is evolving, is
always evolving. But if you havesomebody that could serve you well right now,

(17:03):
sometimes you do have to figure outhow to keep them and give them
a contractor els how do you findthe Tyrone Smiths and the Zach Martins.
And maybe that in itself, becauseI do think that's a really good point,
because like I viewed Tyler Biattish asthe kind of guy that you do
move on from. If somebody's gonnagive that guy ten million dollars a year,
you go, we have a salary, Kevin, I'm not paying him
that. That's insane. He's notthat good, but he is a starting
NFL center and I don't think youhave one behind him. They might think

(17:26):
that they do. And you can'texpect to find these all of these things
in the draft. No, notat all. Like now you're gonna be
bad, and doesn't that matter. They're not the well here's your thing,
Max, Canna get hurt? Donethat matter? They're not gonna be bad
because they have the quarterback, andlike they have too many they have too
many good players to be bad.Dak needs a good offensive line, I
agree, or he's nothing. Iagree. Life gets really hard if you

(17:48):
don't have a good offensive line. And because I do agree with him that,
like I watched this team play lastyear and I thought the offensive line
wasn't good enough, and I didn'twant to move on from the players that
were on it because I'm like, well, how are you going to be
better? Yeah? And so yeah, it's it's interesting because it isn't good.

(18:11):
It's a really fair point that ifyou're if your goal is to be
a real life contender, sometimes youdo have to do something that in a
vacuum doesn't sound great. I don'tthink you give average players good player money.
You find their replacement. But ifyour goal is to win the super

(18:33):
Bowl, you better make damn surethat you can block really well. And
they are going into this thing ninedays away with an offensive line that cannot
block very well right now? Whatdo you do when you have an average
player that you know you want toreplace, but you can't right now,

(18:59):
and because of the guy's contract beingup or whatever, you got to give
the average player, good player, money, something else. He's gonna haul
ass. You know what you do? Sometimes let them Walke franchise tag him,
but that would be bad. ButTyler Beattish on the franchise tag would
be hilarious because like they did thatwith Dalton Scholtz, pretty nice player.

(19:19):
Yeah, they didn't really have areplacement ready. They didn't have anybody else
they needed to tag, and they'relike, tag Dalton? Why not?
Uh so we'll see. And maybebecause because Bettish wasn't that good. He
was an NFL starter doingn't that good. I want to be better there too,

(19:42):
But I don't want them to beforced, right, I don't want
to be forced to use your firstround pick on a center, whether he's
deserving of that pick or not.Like that's how you pass on somebody like
Ceedee Lamb. Right, you getto number twenty four and they a almost
did this instead of picking Ceedee Lamb. And I'm gonna look up this guy's

(20:03):
career stats. Ceedee Lamb was theseventeenth overall pick, I believe, and
they didn't think he'd be available, none of us did. They thought he
would go in the top twelve orso, and he didn't, and because
he was available, they actually pickedhim, and a lot of us were
kind of surprised because a lot oftimes they do they zero in on a
position, and they thought they neededa defensive end and a lot of the

(20:26):
world thought they were gonna pick aguy named Calebon Chase On out of LSU.
I remember this, Yeah, andchase On in his career has five
sacks, so thank god. Insteadof picking what they needed, they went
no, no, no, no, no, no no, we got

(20:47):
to take this guy's too good. And I wonder this year would they do
that or do they need a centeror a left tackle or a left guard
if you're gonna move Tyler Smith?Do they need one of those things so
bad that they have to use theirfirst round pick for it and they're going
to pick their k Levon chas Oninstead of their Ceedee Lamb. And I

(21:07):
don't know, but that's why youhate going into an NFL draft with giant
needs, which is why most teamsuse free agency in trading to get ready
before the draft, because your needswill outweigh your once. Yep, indeed,
that's the best damn sports segment periodcoming up next. You saw him
out there right, you saw itrooting around out there. All right,
mister Dallas is ready for you withsome quick hitters.
