(00:18):
All right, we're getting rolling today. It is the start of another broadcast
week. It is the speakeasy inhere from two until six, as we
are every day with me, MikeReiner, her Julie Dobbs should be over
there at the Helm, and TCis in with us for calves today.

(00:41):
And yeah, we got all theusual stuff here. We'll have the bucket
of crab handled by somebody coming uphere at three oh five. Little Hollywood
swinging at three thirty five. Butthat's well well down the road. There's
no reason to even mention that, let alone worry about it, because because
right now we have this. Hey, look it's Julie and she's at the

(01:03):
sports decks. Hi, everybody,Hi Jules, Hi Jules. But I
got some sports stuff for us totalk about. Uh, we're gonna get
to the Mavericks. But first,a little bit of an of NFL news
that came down today in the formof a trade that I am not sure
many people were anticipating. Former Jetsquarterback Zach Wilson traded to the Broncos today

(01:27):
ahead of this week's draft. Hum. In this trade, the Broncos will
get Zach Wilson, they'll also geta seventh round pick in this upcoming draft,
which is number two fifty six overallfor them. The Jets are going
to get a sixth round pick, number two hundred and three overall. So

(01:51):
kind of interesting because New York washolding on to him throughout this whole offseason,
saying that they didn't want to partwith him for nothing. And this
is not nothing. But a fewdays before the draft, they found a
team that was willing to take ZachWilson off their hands, and that is
the Denver Broncos. Now, beforethis draft, Denver still just had two

(02:12):
quarterbacks on their roster Jared Stidham inBend to Noucci. So you can see
why they might have been scrambling alittle bit. And this is what they
have come up with, I guess, as another option to add to their
quarterback room. So zachach Wilson afirst rounder by the Jets, the second

(02:37):
overall pick. Yeah, who,it's a pretty big fall off and he
was awesome at BYU, But don'tI don't think he's gonna work out for
the Broncos. Yeah, it seemslike the Broncos in a bit of a
tough situation now after getting rid ofRussell Wilson, So what are they going

(02:58):
to I guess they're going to giveZach Wilson, but they also have Jert
Stidham. I don't know that eitheroption is great. I do they're not
great. I bet they'll do somethingin the draft, something else. A
lot of quarterbacks in the draft.Yeah, they got to find their forever
quarterback in the draft. On theone hand, you do have a high
degree of confidence in Sean Payton toscore points. But New Orleans got so

(03:23):
lucky that I believe that the offseason the Drew Brees first of all,
that this situation happened where Drew Breesbecame a free agent that they weren't the
Charges weren't sure if he was workingout, so they drafted Philip Rivers and
then said, hey, we've gotall this money committed to Philip Rivers.
We're just gonna have to let himgo, even though he's clearly been good.

(03:44):
And then the Dolphins had the chanceto pick between him and Dante Culpepper,
and they didn't like Drew Brees's shoulderreport because he had injured his shoulder
in the final game in San Diego, and so he ends up going to
New Orleans and showing himself to bewhat probably the third best quarterback of his

(04:04):
era behind Manning and Brady. Sovery well, if you can just sign
off the street without giving up anything, the third best quarterback of his era,
then you can kind of look likean offensive genius no matter what.
And I think I think Sean Paytonis an offensive genius. But I don't
know, Probably not with Zach Wilsonat the Helm, Probably not. I

(04:27):
guess he's then again, maybe maybehe sees something'd be cool. He's a
seer, the kind that sees stuffthat nobody else does. I was cheer
for Sean Payton. He's a fellowin Naperville, Illinois. Guy. You
guys Naperville people stick together. Yeah. You took my aunt to a dance

(04:47):
once. Oh really? Yeah?Yeah? My mom taught Drew Brees in
high school. Really yeah, sowe have what Peyton Drew Brees fun fact.
Yeah. Yeah, If me,your mom, Drew, and Sean
we'erever in the room, we couldall have a lot to talk about.
We could. There'd be some familiarityin that room. What did your mom
teach? She taught language art?Okay, English language arts at Westlake High

(05:12):
School for a while. I'd loveto note the report and Drew. Yeah,
see reading Emily Bronte and loving it. Do you what it's Emily Bronte,
right, is the author? Ithought it was Charlotte. Yeah,
I don't know. I think she'she didn't Maybe maybe they are. There
is an Emily Bronte. I cantell you that, I believe. Yeah,
let's keep looking. When I thinkBronte is though, I think Charlotte.

(05:34):
Yeah. She also published a bookof poetry with her sisters, Charlotte
and Anne. Look at that.So now there's a third sister in the
mix. Huh yeah, Anne Bronte. Yeah, Wuthering Heights is Emily Bronte.
Okay, yeah, Well there's someNFL news from Jane eyre Is Charlotte
Bronte. Kick off the sports desk. I'll take a buzzer here. Great,

(05:57):
you say that you didn't hear mybuzzard talking about poets? All right,
So let's talk about this Mavericks gamea little bit, because Mike,
you're just hanging out in the TorturedPoets department. Yeah, I can tell
you, hell, are you atortured poet? TC? Yeah, I
can see that Mike. I cansee Mike being a bit of a tortured

(06:20):
poet too. Actually, I'm sowe might be onto something there. More
on that, I think in thebucket of crap, But for now,
let's talk about this Mavericks disaster thatwent down in Game one of the first
round of the playoffs against the Clippers. Yesterday was an afternoon game, and

(06:41):
the Mavericks, in my opinion, just looked like they never got going.
They never got going. They couldn'tfind any rhythm in this one. Even
Luca was extremely off to start thisgame. The Mavericks are best when they're
all involved and when they're all workingtogether and when they're sharing the in my
opinion, and that's what they've beenable to figure out in the last month

(07:03):
or so of the season. Alsowhen they're that's when their defense has been
the best that it was all season, the top defensive team in the league
from like March first on or whatever. And a lot of that had to
do with the bigs that they wereable to get at the trade deadline,
and none of those things that helpedthe team find such success late in the

(07:23):
regular season, where a parent yesterdayin Game one and The Mavericks ended up
losing one nine to ninety seven, which doesn't look nearly as bad as it
was throughout this whole game. TheMavericks had their worst offensive first half in
a playoff game in franchise history,as they were trailing fifty six to thirty
at halftime, and they just neverhad this game. They never got within

(07:46):
reach, They never could go ona long enough run, They never could
stop the Clippers. It just seemedlike every time the Clippers were going down
to their end of the floor, they were capitalizing on it. When the
Mavericks had the ball, they werenot capitling vitalizing on it, and it
just got away from them early andthey could never pull it back within reach.
It was a bad, ugly game. Here's what I'm having a hard

(08:09):
time figuring out. Was it justa really really bad game all at the
same time that those guys had orwere the Clippers doing something to bring that
about. It's got to be someof both, right, And it's just
a question of whatever they're doing, can the Mavericks realize it and do they

(08:30):
have a counter move? Well? The answers to that question yesterday were no
and no. They didn't realize it, and they had no counter move.
I mean, the second half didgo better, you know, which I
went a little bit better, butby then, I mean, they were
so far in the ditch after thefirst half that, yes, there was

(08:52):
nothing they could do in the secondhalf that was going to get them back
in that game. And I'm youknow, I this is the most comforting
there. So I'm always a littlesuspicious that I'm going to this just because
I'm trying to wrap my head aroundsomething that i find uncomfortable to wrap my
head around, which would be theidea of the Clippers just that much better
than the Mavericks. But the threepoint shooting is lead, That's true.

(09:16):
I can't either. I went inthat game yesterday just absolutely sure that number
one, the Mavericks were going towin that game. Number two, yeah,
that the Mavericks were going to winthat series and it was probably going
to be over pretty quick. Andnow I'm not sure. I'm not sure
of anything. You even said.I know, I thought it was going
to be whacking their ass situation.Yes I did. I did say that

(09:41):
that's what we wanted. This isgame one, right, and I don't
necessarily think that the Clippers are thatmuch better than the Mavericks. I think
they had prepared well for the Mavericks, and the things that helped the Mavericks
succeed late in the season weren't there. They were taking away by the Clippers.
The Clippers ran some great plays outof timeouts, Like even the commentators

(10:05):
we're talking about just how the coachingseemed a little bit off balance, I
guess in the techniques that the Clipperswere showing. But yeah, the Mavericks
did get it together in the secondhalf. They outscored the Clippers sixty seven
to fifty three in the second halfwhen they were kind of settled down.
But a franchise playoff low thirty pointsin the first half of this one,

(10:28):
and yeah, second quarter you scoreeight. Yeah, terrible. That's a
problem. I mean, that's thekind of thing that makes you a joke
around the league for the next coupleof news cycles. Yes, yeah,
and just you know, the ifyou want the easy explanation, the difference
in three point shooting is right there. They shot around the same number of

(10:52):
three point shots. The Clippers madefifty percent of theirs. The Mavericks made
thirty percent of theirs. Think thatif you do the math, that explained
most to the point that friendship betweenthe two teams. And I don't think
that the Mavericks looks were worse looksthan the Clippers looks. I don't think
they were either. I think wemissed a lot of open looks. I
think those were very makeable shots. In The Mavericks were I believe, second

(11:16):
and made threes behind the Celtics forthe season. Yeah, no, it's
not like this is a bad partof their team. And I'll tell you
something else. There was a factorin this game that I absolutely, one
hundred percent did not anticipate. Andif this is the way this is going
to be for the rest of theseries, then the Mavericks in a whole
lot more trouble than we ever thoughtthey would be. And that is zubots

(11:43):
Man. I thought you were goingto talk about a Harden looking like himself
and then he's talking about man, talking about man. Zubots was was the
factor in the whole first half. The game was over in the first happened.
He was a big reason why.Yeah. He had a playoff career

(12:05):
high twenty points in the game yesterday, game high fifteen rebounds for the Clippers
yesterday and Daniel Gafford spoke about thatafter the game because he was asked about
that. He was like, Okay, look what their center was able to
do. Look what he was ableto do in game one. How do
you guys combat that? What doyou have to say about that? And

(12:26):
Gafford's quote was this, he said, there are guys that came out that
were ready to play, and thenguys like me for sure that was out
there on the floor just running downthe floor. I wasn't able to commit
to anything and give anything to theteam at the time, which is are
you talking about his health or no? Just the way that he played,
Like yeah, because he did leavethe game three points and no rebounds in

(12:50):
fourteen minutes. And then, uh, you know, I don't want to
over index plus minus, especially inone game, but Lively was a minus
nineteen, so hard to feel likehe was killing it during the time he
was there. Neither of them were, and they're a huge part of They're
supposed to be the thing that's different. Yes, they are supposed to be

(13:11):
the thing that's different, And whatthey did was shoot us back down a
time tunnel to nineteen eighty two.All over again and when we get our
center. Yeah, well and lively. Like in his case, he's a
rookie, right, it is hisfirst playoff game and it's going through a

(13:33):
lot. Yeah, I know heis. I know he is, but
I no, no, no,I know. That's not the excuse.
It's all that I would say, great news. All you got to do
is contain Zuba, which apparently isnot an All Star than they thought it
was going to be. But hedid post about his mom, like right
before the game on his dyeah. They talked about it in the broadcast.
Yeah, like he was like, you know, so, I don't know.

(13:54):
I'm not saying that's an excuse byany means, but just when you're
a rookie and you're navigate things likethat and you're on the road in your
first playoff game, it's more apparentthan if it was a veteran guy that's
working through personal stuff and whatever. So I would say that. Yeah.
The some of the younger, lessexperienced Mavericks didn't show up for this one.

(14:16):
Luca was not in a rhythm tostart the game, but Luka and
Kyrie ended up scoring a combined sixtyfour on twenty one to forty four shooting,
but they really weren't. It waslike they were kind of it offensively
for Dallas. It was tough. It was it was very tough. This

(14:37):
is all without Kawhi too. Wehadn't even mentioned. So yeah, as
far as without Kawhi, it's Imean, do we know that he's coming
back for game two? We don't, right, No, I think it
was kind of assumed that he wouldn'tbe back for game two. Yeah,
so you you might have more opportunity, Like it's a disaster that they lost

(14:58):
one of the games where Kawhi wasn'tplaying. If they lose this series,
which they're now in much greater dangerof after dropping the opener, they're going
to really rude that they ever leta kawhilest game get off the hook.
But whenever you're trying to make excusesfor it afterwards. One, the fact
that Kawhi didn't play is still agood sign for the Mavericks because it means

(15:18):
he might not play in other games, and the games that he does play
in, he might be compromised. And then they got good James Harden,
which if you've watched James Harden playoffseries over the past several years. You
know that there is no circumstance underwhich they get seven games of good James
Harden. Yeah, he could havefive points in game two. That's that's

(15:39):
happened all the time in the latterhalf of his career. So you know,
good James Harden is as good asKawhi. But the reason why you
would much rather have Kawhi than JamesHarden is yeah, and you know the
defensive effort's pretty different too. Yeah. But you know, if if James

(16:02):
Harden is playing like his peak selfand he was their best player, uh
yeah, then the fact he gotPaul George and then zu Bots turning into
an All Star, that's enough totake game one. But I don't think
they can. I don't think theClippers can win this series off of James
Harden and Zubosh being two of theirbest three players. So yeah, you

(16:22):
that's the ross. I think not. And you know there's a thought like
maybe it got in the Mavericks headtoo much, like whether or not Kawhi
was going to play, and thenthis news came down just two hours before
the game began, that Kawhi wasn'tgoing to play, and then the Clippers
kind of able to use that totheir advantage in a way that they were
they knew the whole time, right, So they're preparing without them. The

(16:45):
Mavericks are trying to figure out,Okay, were preparing for Kawhi? Are
we not? And then they getthe news and then they start playing,
and then the game gets away fromthem and then they could never catch up.
But yeah, I heard the announcersaying yesterday that the Clippers were kind
of seeing the as like, everygame that they can win without Kawhi,
that's buying him more time to nothave to rush back from this inflammation from

(17:07):
the surgery that he's dealing with. And they know that, right they want
to go on a long playoff run, so they're like, we can manage
one, two, maybe three winswithout Kawhi. Like, wow, that
helps us on the other end ofthis thing as we try to move forward
in the play Yeah, hope nottoo. I don't get any more wins
at all. Yeah, that'd benice. The Mavericks play Game two tomorrow

(17:30):
night in LA and we have afew other NBA playoff games tonight. The
Magic at the Cavaliers Cleveland leading thatseries one to zero, the Sixers at
the Knicks New York leading that seriesone to zero, and then you have
the Lakers and the Nuggets Denver leadingthat series one to zero. The Dallas
Star is also kicking off They're playoffstonight, and I'll have to find a

(17:55):
spot later in the show to maybeat four o'clock to talk a little bit
more about the Stars and the GoldenKnights matchup that's getting going tonight at eight
thirty at the American Airlines Center.Let's see. Coming up next, TC
is going to present to us hisbucket of crap. What you Got?
