Speaker 1 (00:00):
We have got a phenomenal Territorian who's just been announced
to see Australian rugby League women's assistant coach for the
upcoming Prime Minister's thirteen international against Papua New Guinea. Her
name is Shari Togo and she joins me on the
line right now. Good morning, Shari.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Good morning to you, Katie. How are you?

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Yeah? I am so good and I was so excited
when I found out that a Territorian is the assistant
coach of the Australian women's rugby league team.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
You are a bloody legend. How good is that? It
is so good? Now, Shari, how did you find out
that you were going to be the assistant coach?

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Yeah, so I found out last month and it was
all of it, hush hushan up until now. Brad Donald,
the Australian angela ruy coach which is also the head
coach of the Prime Minister's thirteen, gave me a call
up and yeah it was a bit emotional and yeah,
well good to go.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Sorry, how did you feel when you got that call?

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Because from what I've read, you've been involved in rugby
league for a long time. You play yourself, You coach
at a number of different levels.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
So how did you feel when you got that phone call?

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Oh? Really emotional actually, like yeah, I was like I
had to hang up on him and then bring my
husband and he was just like why are you calling me?
Hung up and say yeah, I was all just the
quickest like ten seconds of my life.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
I love that. Did you think you did? You think
it was like having you on? But he wasn't.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
For real. Yeah, it was just a random day at
work and I just received this phone call and it
was just unbelievable. It's still a sinjury moment actually that. Yeah,
Brad gave me the call up.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
That is so awesome. Now tell me when do like
when is the tournament?

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Yeah? So the tournament is played next Saturday, but we
head down to camp on the Gold Coast. This this Sunday,
we fly out to the Gold Coast into Camp and
then from the Gold Coast we head straight over to
Port Moresby in New Guinea.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
So playing against Papua New Guinea for this game? Is
that correct?

Speaker 3 (02:26):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (02:27):
And and you know have like have you met most
of the girls before?

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Is it sort of going to be you know, is it?
What's it going to be? Like heading into camp for
the first time this weekend.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
I've never met the girls. I've met most of the
coaching stuff before, which I'm really excited about the girl
meeting the girl's team for the first time. It's really
keen to get around the girls and athletes and hear
their stories and get them pumped for the week before
we head over.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
And the thing that I love about you is I've
been told that you are a mum of two kids,
You're a proud Indigenous woman, you work full time with
kids with disabilities and disadvantage backgrounds, but you still find
the time and you've got the energy to captain and
play rugby league and also coach a number of different
age groups. So how do you reckon you know, all

(03:22):
of those skills as well? Shari going to help you
know when it comes to mentoring. What are some young
quite young women as well in the team.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Yeah, just look, I just throw off my family morals
and values a lot too, and it's just about building
a safe space and building relationships and a strong foundation.
And that's where I get my most motivation from. When
I go coach my under fifteen girls or if I

(03:53):
playing captain now senior women's team. It's just all about
keeping a healthy relationship with my team player is yeah,
it's good.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
How are they?

Speaker 1 (04:04):
How's your under fifteen girls feeling about you going off
to be the assistant coach of the Australian site.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
Are there? They are? Look teenage girls. They don't really
show much motion, but oh look they they care and
they've got my back one hundred percent, just like I
got there. So yeah, they said to give them shout
outs and that. So under fifteen girls, Hello, I'm the life.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
Oh so good Sarry, I just reckon, this is awesome.
I mean a lot of people that listen to this show. No,
I love rugby league. Both my brothers are assistant coaches,
one with the Dolphins and one with one with Saint George.

Speaker 3 (04:49):
So and yeah, and well one of.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
My brothers actually coaches the Tonguan international side as well.
So I know how huge an opportunity this year for you.
And I just think it's absolutely incredible that we've got
a territory woman that is going.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
Off to do this.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
Thank you, yeah please?

Speaker 1 (05:12):
And you know, like I think that sometimes we hear
in the territory, you also can think to yourself, oh
you know, am I going to be able to get
opportunities like that when I stay living in the Northern Territory.
So I just think that this is really wonderful that
You've got the opportunity to do this, and I'm sure
that you're going to absolutely shine.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
Oh thank you so much. And yeah, I've got a
big support unit here in the Northern Territory which is
unbelievable and all over the state. So I just can't
wait to do myself proud and everyone that's supporting me
proud also.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
Well, Shari, I reckon that everybody's going to be watching
the Australian Rugby League women's team, well with a little
everyone from the territory with a bit of extra interest
than usual this time around.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
Oh yeah, it's going to be ethic. It's going to
be an experience that I'll never forget and I'm just
keen to get in and learn and grow as much
as possible. Yeah, I can bring it back here.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
How do you reckon they're going to go? Is the team?

Speaker 1 (06:14):
I know that you haven't gone into camp yet, but
how do you reckon the team's looking.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Look, there's a strong, strong, talented bunch of girls there. Hey,
so they're all athletes and in their own right, and
football is so I reckon they'll be able to get
the job done.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Shari, it is lovely to speak to you this morning.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
Can we try and catch up with you once the
game's done and dusted as well and find out how
it all went?

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Yeah? Too easy?

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Oh good on you.

Speaker 1 (06:48):
Congratulations again and thanks so much for having a chat
with us this morning. I just think this is such
a good news story.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Awesome. Thank you so much for having me.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
Thank you. Thanks, Shari,
