Speaker 1 (00:00):
There's a lot of excitement around the territory with Bonza
entering the airways and joining me on the line right
now from Hospitality int the CEO Alex Bruce, Good morning
to you, Alex, Good morning teddy mate. Firstly, Daniel Rochford
wants you to don the budgy smugglers and can't wheel

(00:22):
down the todd more with him. Are you up for it?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Some people look better with the lights off, Katers. That's
the reality of right some of us out there.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
So's to know I'm kissing.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
I'm about promoting reasons on the territory of attractive place
to live with it.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Oh too funny. The excitement from Daniel is palpable, like
he's so pumped about Bonza entering the territory. How are
you feeling about it? Oh?

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Really positive because we've had a bit of a patchy
season for some of our operators out there, and you
know your listeners all know this. That the cost of
the flights in and out of the territory. It's been
raised by all of our family and friends as why
they're not coming up or coming up less. We've heard
it from our accommodation properties. It really has been on
Dampner on what otherwise could have been a better season

(01:16):
for all of us, and with the seasonality that's come
back in, we know it's going to be very quiet
over this wet season, so you know, opportunity lost a
little bit to get the competition in earlier. We do
support the competition, we don't. We echo the sentiments, if
not the antics of Daniel and Cca in terms of
you know, we don't think the territory has been getting

(01:37):
a fit rubber the green from the existing operators.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Now, Like I think that we've spoken about this a
bit earlier in the week in fact with Bruce Dale
and aviation expert, he said that seasonality is like it
does have a huge part to play in terms of
the aviation sector. So I reckon, like it seems as
though you know the thing is here. All of us
probably need to get onto our families, our friends, go
come on on, come for a trip to the territory

(02:02):
and come here when it's harsh.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
That kid and Truisa mentee does have a good summer
promotion running into state now and pleasingly what yesterday's announcement,
you know, the Gold Coast Airport down there at cold
and Gata. It is a gateway on it's got international flights,
it is a hub and spoke for all the other
ones as well. So it looks like there is now
an attractive path to come up north, you know, December

(02:26):
or in January and kick around and have some fun
up here and see see them hopefully and full forth.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
Alex, what does it mean for hospitality in terms of
you know, keeping things going over that that wet season
as well.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Yeah, look, I think it's going to be the locals predominantly.
We're just seeing that trend. We're going to a bit
of kick over the next September school holidays, a kickoff
next next end of next week with territorial and getting
out and about a little bit more, and then our
forecasts are for that very traditional quiet accommodation season for you.
We really would encourage everyone, get their family and friends,

(03:03):
tell them to come up and poke around a bit
and have some fun. There's a lot of fantastic things
that are accessible year round. We know it. We just
need to get more Southerners up here as well to
experience it with us. But look, you know Daniel did
touch on it, and it's right. The attractiveness of this
place for all of those workers that we will want
to recruit into the lead up to next year. We

(03:25):
do compete for the same hospitality workers as places like
the Sunshine Coast the Gold Coast, so being able to
target those places to recruit from will be pleasing that
it's you know, the first thing they do is check
out the flight costs and say no, thank you. They
might check it out and go, yeah, all right, I'll
give it a go.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
I just reckon, it's had such a huge impact in
so many ways the flight costs and you know, even
like just in terms of your connectivity to your family
as well if they live into state, it's got such
a big impact. But then, like you've just touched on,
when you're trying to recruit people here to work, it
is a huge.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Hindrance absolutely if they're not born and breders and they
want to give it a go, come join the territory.
We do have a great wife, so I know we've
got our challenges, but it's still a fantastic place up here.
But if they look at oh, well, you know what
if mum gets cruel, how much is it going to
cop a jump on a plane to head back down
and see her. Their eyes have been watering this year

(04:22):
and it has made that we know this from all
the workforce discussion wherein right across public and private sectors,
the connectivity and the cost of connectivity is a real
damp now for us recruiting.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
Hey, Alex, I will ask you, and I put this
to Daniel as well. It's something that I think for
those of us that have all lived here for a while,
do worry about You know, we've seen airlines come and go.
Are you concerned about the longevity of Bonza?

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Look, I listened to your interview. It's the Kim from Bonza.
I think they've gone as far as they can go.
I think they've they've reached their hand out to us.
And yeah, it is on territoriums now. We need to
we need to stimulate competition. We need to help support competition,
otherwise we'll end up back with, you know, the idea
that we only have one of the two major carriers

(05:09):
that's flying direct flights to Sydney right now, how do
we get to this situation? So if sadly bonds ages
through lack of support from US and Southerners and other
customers of theirs, you know, well, we know what we're
in for if it's a monopoly or duopoly again.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Yeah, look, this is the thing. And you know, as
you've touched on and look I talk about it so
often on the show. We know we've got our issues,
there is no doubt about that. We all hope that
those issues do get better, particularly things like crime and
the anti social behavior. But we really do want to
make sure that this place is thriving. We want to

(05:47):
make sure that we have more opportunities to travel into
state and for people to come and see us at
a cheaper and more reasonable price. So yeah, let's hope
that this is a step in the right direction and
things do start to move forward a bit.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
That's it. And you know this has come in a
good time for us, whilst our workforce locally are thinking
about what they're going to do over Christmas, but also
you know, perfectly time for us to gear up for
hopefully another good dry season next year.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
Yeah. Alex Bruce, the CEO of hospitality here in the
Northern Territory. Always good to catch up with you. We'll
talk to you again soon, k Katie.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
I'll keep my pants on for now.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
Good goal. Thanks Mace,
