Speaker 1 (00:00):
We are going to head across right now actually, and
we'll go across to our well to our candidate for
the Labor Party. Joining us on the line right now
is Nick Lovering, the ALP candidate for Katherine. Good morning
to you, Nick, Good morning Katie.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Are you doing yeah? Really well? Now?
Speaker 1 (00:18):
Nick, I'm assuming you've heard how we've done to meet
the candidates before. Are you ready to do it?
Speaker 2 (00:25):
I'm ready to go.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
All right, let's go now. You will have a little
bit of extra time, as Joe did as well, so
we got up to just under eight minutes. But I'll
start the clock for you right now now. Nick, tell
me why did you decide to put your hand up
to run.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Well, I've spent twenty five years in education, and two
thirds of that time here in the Northern Territory and
fourteen years here in Katherine, and I've got a good
understanding of how Catherine works, running schools, recruiting people to
Katherine and supporting them through their experienceperience of moving to Catherine,
living in Catherine, and then also listening to them when
(01:05):
they decide either to stay or to go. I've also
worked across the community with our defense community, with our
rural community working for Catherine School the Air, so I've
got an understanding of how Cathern works as a logistical
hub and as a strategic defense force base and as
(01:26):
a tourist destination. So I think I've got a good
understanding of how people fit into the community and how
we can best support them when they come to Catherine
and contribute to our community.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
Nick, what do you see as being the biggest issues
in the electric.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Well, our biggest issue is fighting for our fair share
here in Catherine and making sure that we've got equity
and access when it comes to our schools. When it
comes to facilities for recreation, I've heard about the issues
with the pool. We know about those. We really need
a fantastic pool. We'd love some new facilities for our
(02:09):
young people to recreating. So I'd love to see us
have an indoor sports stadium where young people can play
year round and enjoy their basketball and their netball, and
a place for the community to hold functions. But also
acknowledge that you know, we at the moment, we have
(02:31):
a current issue with crime, and I've been talking to
people as I've been door knocking around around that issue
as well.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Just on that indoor sports facility. I mean, is that
something that the Labor Party is prepared to commit to
or is that just a bit of a wish list.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
I mean discussions at the moment, and I've definitely raised
it with the Chief Minister. You know, it would it
would also double as an evacuation center for Katherine, which
we desperately need. So yeah, look it's early days and
I'm still learning about the process, but you know it's
something that I've definitely raised with the Chief Minister and
(03:09):
we're looking at.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
So taking into account those different issues, how do you well,
why do you feel that your best place to try
and combat those issues?
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Well, I suppose working at Katherine he in the last
three years, I've I took a really complex organization there
and one that was struggling, and I learned a lot
about what we needed to do with our especially with
our young people, and how that we can offer some
opportunity for them to turn their lives around. And when
(03:42):
I went there, you know, the school was struggling and
we definitely applied consequences and I hear people talking about
consequences and that's absolutely part of working with young people
is applying consequences when they do things wrong. But we
need to have opportun unity as well. And Catherine High,
you know, we said our motto was every person, every opportunity.
(04:06):
So stick is important, you know, stick, you know, but
stick followed by stick doesn't always work. Stick and then
an opportunity for that currot. What's what can we provide
you to to make a better choice? And I was
really pleased last week I was involved in an announcement
(04:26):
around a new trade training center and we really need
to look at options for young people up to the
ages of twenty four twenty five. It's not as school
aged people. We need to support those young people that
are a bit a bit lost or they need that
opportunity to turn things around and training and getting work
where he is really important. So that announcement CDU building
(04:51):
a new trade training center is going to be pivotal
to Catherine as a community. And we will continue to
do our work at Katherine High offering those programs and
this year we're going to have one of our largest
ever graduating cohorts coming out of Catherine Him. We have
about fifty young people finishing year twelve, and over half
(05:12):
of those young people are at regional students, which the
statistics on how that changes young people's lives are enormous.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
Now, I want to ask you. Beck from Willow Blue
has been in contact with us, and i'd ask Joe
a similar question. She's interested to know why you haven't
been out to go and visit some of those businesses
along the main street to see what their concerns are,
particularly after the high spike of crime.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Well, I will be. I've visited some businesses and I
will continue to get around as many businesses as I can.
I'm still working at the moment, but I'm finishing up
work this week to campaign full time so I can
say to those businesses you'll see more of me. But
just at this time, I'm still absolutely committed to making
(06:04):
sure that the work that I'm doing is front and center,
and then people will see a little bit more of
me in their coming weeks.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
Now we're at about five minutes forty we'll go intil
eight minutes. We spoke about the pool, or you're touched
on the pool just a moment ago. It is an issue,
or it is a topic that comes up in the studio. Now,
from Labour's perspective and from your perspective as a candidate
for labor, is there going to be any more investment
(06:32):
into that local pool in Catherine.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Look, I've raised it with the Chief Minister. I understand
the difficulties of getting these major projects underway. I've just
delivered a fifteen point seven million dollar steam center for
Catherine High School and one of the challenges is for
these building companies is bringing their workforce and being able
(06:58):
to accommodate their workforce. So listening in yesterday on the
radio on the ABC, you know, the current member did
allude to the fact that SITSLA are working on their
accommodation facility. So I'm really confident in the plans that
the Council's got. I've seen them. They look great. Obviously,
we would love to have a super facility, but we've
(07:20):
got a limited amount of money. But I think we
can get a really good outcome for the money that
we do have, and it's just a matter of us
And you know, it was unfortunate that the pool eventually
cracked and had to be closed. That's not ideal, but look,
I'm really confident that we'll get a good outcome.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
Nick quick One, Binjari Aboriginal Community corporation. They joined us
on the show a little earlier. They've raised concerns that
they're at risk of falling over due to unpaid invoices
and continual delays caused by DIPPLE bureaucracy and inefficiencies. Is
this something that you are prepared to work with them on.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
Absolutely? And you know I'm a regular visitor to Binjari
through my work at the school, and I was really
pleased to be out there for the announcement of the
new housing that's going into to Binjari. So absolutely happy
to listen and work on those concerns. And I see
that as a strength. I'm a bit of a strategizer.
(08:23):
You know. When I went to Catherine High we had
to bring various groups of people together to consult, the talk,
to look at solutions.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
All right, Nick, we have run out of time very quickly,
thirty seconds. Tell us why should people vote for you?
Speaker 2 (08:37):
Well, because I can convert strategy into effective action, and
I've proved that at Catherine High School. I know how
we can set a vision for our town and then
I can piece out the actions towards that. And I
want people to give me that opportunity to do that
(08:57):
and we haven't seen that. In the last four years.
We've seen a highlighting of the issues, but where are
the actions?
Speaker 1 (09:04):
All Right, we are out of time. Nick Lovering, the
ALP candidate, the labor candidate for Catherine. Thank you very
much for having a chat with us this morning and
being part of our Meet the Candidates Well segment.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
Thank you
