Speaker 1 (00:00):
So this morning we are going to kick off with
the incumbent, Kate Warden, whose name and voice you will recognize.
Good morning to you, Kate.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Good morning Katie. Glad to be with you.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
Good to have you on the show. Now, Kate, we've
got seven minutes for you and our Meet the Candidates series.
Are you ready to get started?

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Absolutely? One hundred percent.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Let's do it all right, Kate? Why have you decided
to put your hand up to run again?

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Look, Katie, it's very simple. I am very, very lucky
to be the member for Sanderson. It's an absolute privilege
and you know, as you know, I've been door knocking
that electorate for now nine years and it's something I've
literally done every single week that I've been elected, and
I love it. It is such a privilege to serve

(00:48):
people in the way that I do. And I think
a lot of people don't see the everyday work that
we do in the electorate and how we work and
the different things that we help out with, but you
know we will any day. Can take me from helping
out getting an age care referral, helping people with visas,
you know, some of those issues, assisting with where crime hotspots, occur.

(01:10):
Just all of that stuff, working with our school councils
to get things and also making really important community collect connections.
So I've done a lot of work over those nine
years and I've absolutely loved it. It is such a privilege,
and I'll continue to work every single day for my community,
and you know, very very proud of some of the
things that I've achieved. And definitely most recently, you know,

(01:33):
I've advocated really strongly around the buyback of licenses around
places like being all of shops because of the antisocial behavior,
and we have now achieved that well, I've achieved that
with our government and now we're seeing a massive decrease
in antisocial behavior and around an aller and I know
the shop keepers that are very very happy, as are
our community. So being able to do those things really

(01:55):
targeted things and also bring community together. You know, I
established the men's groups back in twenty sixteen or seventeen
and that's going strong, and that brings people together in
our community. So looking at the things where there's difficulties
and challenges, but also making sure that we can do
things where we can have an effect on people's everyday
lives and perhaps championing the things that people can't do

(02:18):
for themselves. It's just so important and it is satisfying,
but it's also it makes me incredibly proud, and I
know it's a great privilege to be in this role.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
Kate, what do you see as being the biggest issues
in the electorate from that door knocking that you've done.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
So, I'll talk to people about crime on the doors.
I never take a backward step on that, Katie, but
I will let you know that when I was elected
in twenty sixteen, people were talking about crime then and
we had some very specific issues with a local charity
that was feeding people and they were flocking in and
causing lots and anti social behavior, and I stepped in

(02:56):
at that stage to help out with that. And I'll
often do that in hot spots. So when you know,
that's the beauty of being engaged with your community and
always draw knocking as you can get that information you
know very much firsthand, and along with social media and
making sure that I monitor and seeing what's going on
in my community, I'll do that so's that is one thing.

(03:16):
The cost of living is really starting to buy it
for people. So helping out where I can with that,
particularly engaged with all our charities and making sure that
people are accessing services if they need it. But Katie,
you'd be surprised about the sorts of things that people
come in to see me about. I've always worked on
a Saturday every you know, since I've been first elected.

(03:39):
I've had my office open on Saturday for people that
are working, and I get lots of people that come through,
and I help people with everything from fleeing domestic violence
and helping them get engaged. I help people get their
driver's licenses. I help people put their resume together. It
seems something small, particularly for new migrants, so that they

(04:00):
can get a job, having a look at that and
helping them so lots of things. It's very very broad,
and often I'll help broker issues around council issues, so
I work across every level of government in this role.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Kate, on the issue of crime, we have had people
contact us, you know, who have said that they weren't satisfied,
you know, with the way in which you dealt with
crime when you were the police minister. Sort of looking
at that in your electorate, why do you feel that
you're the best place to combat that issue?

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Still Katie. You know, no matter what job you're in,
you're going to criticism and you're never going to make
everybody happy. I think we have to accept that. But
I am very proud we got a you know, Michael
Murphy came in as a new commissioner under my leadership,
and I also kicked off the police review, which has
now seen that very big investment coming in. I've also

(04:54):
done a whole range of stuff across my community, getting
CCTV in there, bringing in and working very very closely
with our local police. It's the things that in PHAPS
don't see that I think are making a big difference
for people. So there's always going to be that people
that are critical. There is also going to be people that,
you know, didn't feel that I responded exactly how they wanted.
I accept that this job doesn't come without challenge, but

(05:18):
I'm always up for the challenge, and I'm always very
very upfront with people and happy to meet with them
and walk through those issues with them.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Okay, two minutes to go. One of the other issues
that we've spoken to you about before, but it continues
to be a concern is Sandersen Middle School. Oval tell
us where things are at there and what your commitment
is for Sanderson Middle School level.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Sure, so we have seen hooning on that oval and
really unsafe practice. Totally acknowledged that, but I have lobbied
hard and the Education Department have agreed now to put
bollards in. I believe the early work for that has started.
I've asked them to absolutely talk with the people that
currently use the ovals to understand how they put those bards.

(06:00):
I did because you know there's details that can't be missed.
You have to make sure you've got gates so that
a car can legitimately come on the oval to remove
the goalposts and change them over as our sports change.
But I also want to work much more longer term
with the clubs that are there to make sure that
we can establish a nice little spot. We've done some
good work in at my Lack Oval, and if you've

(06:21):
been out there and seen that the new center that's
out there for football, I want to do something very
similar at Sanderson and I'm working through at the moment
how we can do that. So I've been a big
champion for that, and we have got those vollads going
in and we have to make sure that that surface
is fit for purpose and we're doing all of that cake.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Forty seconds left. Why should people vote for you.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
I've been a very strong voice for Sanderson over my
last eight years being elected, but I've worked incredibly hard
for nine years. My commitment is one hundred percent there.
I will continue to work for the people of Sanderson.
They are amazing people. And it is as I said,
I am so lucky to be in this job. It
is a great privilege and not one I take for granted.

(07:07):
And also ready and always able to step up and
take on a ministerial role in our government. And I'm
really really a strong part of the Labor Lawler team,
and going forward, I want to continue to do that
and have a very strong voice not just for my
community on the small issues, but on the big issues
of government as we go forward. It is a great
privilege to be the mem Kate.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
Very good timing, Our time is up. Thank you very
much for your time this morning, and thanks for taking
part in our Meet the Candidates series.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
No problems. It's always lovely to speak to you, Katie.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
Thank you
