Speaker 1 (00:00):
A real change of pace because many of you will
be familiar with my next guest, whose family holds a
fishing competition each year called Max's Cast for a Cure.
It's to honor their little boy who lost his battle
with brain cancer. The Kirby family raises funds through their
event every year for the cause, and they've also gotten
(00:21):
on board to help a Catherine family whose one year
old daughter was recently diagnosed with brain cancer and had
to go to Brisbane for emergency surgery. Now joining me
on the line right now is the wonderful Naomi Kirby.
Good morning, Naomi.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Hi Katie, how are you.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
You're really good, lovely to have you on the show now. Naomi,
I understand you've reached out to the young Catherine family
to see how you could help Baby Zali. What can
you tell us about their situation?
Speaker 2 (00:53):
So far as I know, Baby Zali winnen for a
twelve month check up and they noticed that who hits
a company had increased quite significantly. She'd also been quite
grizzly and fussy with food and cleaning and sort of
normal toddler things. But they sort of went in to
get some more check up done about the head circumference
(01:14):
and they found that she had a brain tumor.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
So goodness me, you know, I can't imagine how they
must be feeling at this point. And my understanding is
that they are going to need to spend quite a
bit of time in Brisbane, is that right?
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Well, yes, that was originally the plan. They were sort
of foreseeing that it was going to be, you know,
but quite a lot of treatment and staying down in Brisbane.
But it turns out that Dari's tumor they couldn't remove
it all. It was attached to her brains then, but
it was also engulfing a lot of her spine. So
it seems that with they've given her you know, a
(01:55):
short amount of time, so the family decided to bring
Zai home. So it's yeah, it's going to be quite
a tough time for them.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
So yeah, yeah, I can't, Like I say, I can't
even begin to imagine.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
And I know that, you know, you and Lincoln have
done a lot.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Through maxis Cast for a Cure to try to support
others as well going through this really really tough journey.
And you guys, you've made a donation to Zali's family,
haven't you.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Yeah, like maxis cast for a cure. You know, we
we aim to you know, obviously fund research, but we
want to help anti families at the same time. And
we you know, gave five thousand dollars to their go fundme.
We're just hoping that it can take relieve a bit
of the pressure. You know, finances as there are no
comple living is so high at the moment, and you know,
(02:51):
while they're going through this that hopefully they don't have
to worry as much about rent and bills and power
and all of those things don't stop when your child
go through cancer. And that's how we try and help people. Yeah,
so it's going to be devastating for them. They're waiting
for to stabilize Ali and I think bring her home.
(03:14):
But hopefully the anti community can still get behind them
and you know, donate to the gohot from me because
they don't know how much time they're going to have
left with her, and that's just a devastating prognosis.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
And I mean, Naomi, you like you understand this better
than better than anybody, and having gone through a similar journey,
how big a difference does it make when when you're
not sort of having to worry about money along with
everything else that you're worrying about.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Yeah, we were, you know, looking back back in twenty seventeen,
like the Darwin community got behind us, you know, so much,
and we did a go from me and they helped us,
and it was just amazing. I just didn't expect that
kind of support, you know, over the whole process through
Maxis treatment, but then obviously when eventually passed away, not
(04:06):
having to worry about every little bit of money made
such a huge difference. And I just hope that the
family can be supported by the anti community that we were.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Yeah, I hope so as well.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
And I know that as you touched on there, a
GoFundMe page has been set up, so we'll try and
share that as well on the mixed page so that
people are able to make a donation and help their
little family. Naomi, when you guys started, you know, when
you started Max's Cars for a Cure, could you ever
(04:41):
have imagined just how much the community would get behind
the fishing competition and really get behind those families grappling
with this issue.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Yeah, I honestly, you know, I didn't expect it to
get a zigsa dead. I just was sitting here one
night with Lincoln and after Max passed away, we were
sort of talking what can we do. We need to
do something to one on a Max's legacy to help
families like brain cancer kills more children than any other
disease in Australia. People probably don't realize that one hundred
(05:18):
twenty kids are diagnosed every year and some of them
are palliative on diagnosis. There's no treatment for them. So
we want to fund research. We want to just do
what we can. We really didn't expect so many businesses
to just get behind us. It was just amazing. I
just couldn't believe it and I still can't believe it. Yes,
but we're you know, we just want to make a
(05:41):
small difference, even though you know as we can.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
Yeah, yeah, and you know, even for the families that
you help and for the families that you support, it's
not only the financial thing, but you know, having someone
that they can talk to who has lived through these
as well must be really it must be really comforting
for those families to be able to speak to you
on Lincoln.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Well, I mean, I hope, so we try, Yeah, but
you know, they're going through the worst time of their
life right now. Yeah, I remember how much how hard
that was. You're just in a brain fog. You really
can't think straight, you know, there's so much information coming
at you. You don't know what to do. It's a really,
really hard time, and the family is very you know,
(06:24):
there are young families that are in the twenties, one child.
You know, this is a huge shock for them and
they've got, you know, a tough throw to head, and
I just really feel terribly for them.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
Yeah, my heart and prayers go out to them at
what must be the most difficult, difficult times of their lives. Naomi,
I really appreciate your having a chat with us this morning,
and I hope that Territorians do really get behind little
Zali's family and give them the support that they need
at this point. Thank you for having a chat with
(06:57):
us today.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
I really appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
And thank you and Lincoln for the work that you
guys continue to do for Max's Cars for a Cure.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
It's phenomenal what you've created for Max.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
We're planning on again this year eight to tenth of August,
having a bit of a change of location this year,
we're going to try the Free Spirit resorts so good. Yeah,
someone put their hand up and say they're happy to
host us there. So we thought we'd give it a change,
and you know, we just do what we do and
hope that we can make a little difference, you know
(07:28):
to brain cancer and all these kids that are affected
by it. It's devastating. It's been six children in Darwin
now and you know it doesn't seem as rare as
they sort of you know, yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
That's exactly right.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
So six kids and Naomi, you got like you try
and help those families, don't you.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
I mean, that's that's what this is all about, that's right.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, And you know we've given a lot
to research, about two hundred and thirty five k to
brain cancer research, but you know, helping families is sort
of what I'm about. I found I was really lost,
you know, all three years ago, and it was I
didn't feel like there was a huge amount of support,
and I guess I just want to make that difference
(08:11):
for these families.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
Good on you. You're a bloody legend, Naomi. I'll say it
to Lincoln as well, but you're an absolute legend. Hey
tell me when he caught the ten thousand dollar fish.
Wasn't he meant to buy something for you?
Speaker 2 (08:24):
What did he do that I was waiting in the kitchen.
Still hasn't happened. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
You've all right.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
We'll get on to him.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
We'll shave you on the radio to waiting. Oh Naomi,
it's lovely to talk to you. Thank you so much
for your time this morning. Thank you for the work
that you continue to do.
