Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well. We are continuing our discussions with our candidates running
across various different municipalities at the upcoming council election and
focusing on Darwin once again today and those who've put
their hand up to be Darwin's next Lord Mayor. Now
joining us live on the line is Sylvia Klenares. Good
(00:20):
morning to you, Sylvia.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Good morning Katie, and good morning listeners.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Lovely to have you on the show now, Sylvia, you've
got six minutes to answer a series of questions.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Are you ready as ready as I can?
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Awesome? All right, Sylvia? Why did you decide to put
your hand up to be the next Lord Mayor?
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Well Down's my home, not just where I was born,
but where I've raised my family, built my career, and
proudly served our community over the past four years. As
a counselor for waters Ward. I work closely with residents
and local leaders to deliver real solutions and help shape
the future of our city. That has empowered me to
take the next step, and I understand how council operates,
(01:04):
and I've had the leadership, knowledge and commitment needed to
take on the role as Lord me. I believe Darwin
deserves bold transparent, community first leadership, leadership that listens, acts
and plans for the future, and we can work with
staff and elected members to deliver the ward initiatives now Sylvia.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
In terms of qualifications and work experience, which qualifications or
what qualifications and work experience do you have which you
think make your best place to become the mayor?
Speaker 2 (01:35):
So I bring over thirty seven years of professional experience
across the federal government, education and nonproprofit sector, and with
qualifications in business, finance, human resources, health and safety, and
project management. My career has been focused on leadership as
a HR business partner, strategic planning, governance, policy development, and
(01:56):
building the capability of management and teams whilst we're with
a range of regulatory bodies. I've also had extensive experience
in property and facilities management. What I like to further
ad is I've also got twelve years that I served
as a vice president for ant Year Int Division, where
I played a key role in negotiating enterprise agreements and
advocating for fair and transparent workplace practices. But also I've
(02:21):
already acted as a Lord mayor during my term. I'm
well versed in counter by laws, policies, and procedures, and
I've delivered results and understand that what it takes to lead.
I'm passionate about the equity, transparency and community driven outcomes
and I'm ready to lead counsel with collaboration and with
long term vision for Darwin.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
Now, Sylvia, what do you see as the most important
issues in Darwin.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Well, there's actually several key issues facing counts right now
and someone with experienced in future focused mindset, I'm ready
to lead with vision and action on them with transparency.
What we need is strong strategic planning, leadership that looks
beyond the short term and design of tomorrow's opportunities. That
means listening to our community, planning for growth and making
(03:13):
sure our decisions today set up for success in the future.
There's grassroots stuff that needs to be addressed, like the
five hours roads rates, rubbish recycling and recreation and as
well as bringing people back into the city. There should
be a customer focus approach and we need to get
the basics right then grow from there. But whilst canvassing,
(03:36):
I've been speaking to people and the biggest concerns is
affordability is also major concern. Greening Darwin and urban development
planning and revitalizing our green belts, but also whilst walking
the streets, clean sustainable public spaces, and also at my priorities.
What I'm hearing is community safety is also the concern
(03:59):
about safer road design, improved lightings and things like that,
but also the investment in infrastructure and our accessible areas
that we have, so upgrading our roads, our footpaths and
public amenities and making our places safe and comfortable, and
especially accommodating those with disabilities.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
Sylvia, what are your top three commitments to voters.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Well as a Lord mayor. I think it's important for leadership.
As a commitment is lead counsel with a strong focus
on collaboration, respect and clear communication, ensuring that we operate
as a united team that delivers real results for our community.
I believe in setting shared priorities that reflect our unique
needs for each ward. I'm committed to creating spaces for
(04:45):
every counselor's voice to be heard and we don't take
consideration to that. My campaign is about building on substance,
not just promises, but a clear plan of action, and
what I want to do is introduce ward based action
plans developed in conso tation with counselors and residents to
identify local pain points and guide targeted solutions. I will
(05:06):
increase opportunities for public forums in each ward so residents
can speak directly to the representations and help shape council priorities.
These feedbacks will be brought back into council where we
can reprioritize our strategic plan and forward planning. By leading
with integrity and transparency, will ensure our decisions are community
driven and responsive and future focus. But throughout my campaign,
(05:29):
I've been active in voicing now that I intend on
achieving our goals with a clear action but not vague intention.
In my term, I will introduce online polls and targeted
advertising to invite community feedback on emerging priorities, more opportunities
to dial into council meetings. Too often residents fill there's
not enough opportunities to engage, and I want to change
(05:50):
that by making consultations direct, accessible and ongoing. So to
ensure transparency, I will develop an online tracking and report
systems that present monthly updates on council agendas, progresses, and challenges.
These business style dashboards that will help show exactly where
our public funds are being spent such as projects, wards, initiatives,
(06:13):
and our operational costs, and also the quarterly reports we
publish impaired with online polsh allowing the residents to respond
and help shape future decisions. Promotion and using my platform
would also help support local businesses and sporting groups and
community groups and our day and events. But more importantly
(06:33):
is team and accountability. I'll work closely with counselors to
foster stronger team culture. Will hold regular planning days to
shared goals and KPIs, including a commitment for each councilors
to host at least one part per day.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Oh, Sylvia, we run. We have run out of time.
These six minutes has run out. That's okay. I do
want to ask you, though, very quickly. Are you a
member of a political party or have you ever been.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
I've never been a member with a political party or
a group, and I believe this level government should not
be driven by politics and their agendas.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
And in terms of your preferences, where are your preferences flowing?
Speaker 2 (07:13):
My preferences based on choosing candidates who are not affiliated
or associated with any political parties or groups.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Well, Sylvia, clenaries, lovely to catch up with you. This morning.
I've not spoken to you before, so I really appreciate
your time.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Thank you, Thank you very much. You'll have more.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
Thank you,
