Speaker 1 (00:00):
Today catching up with a couple of the candidates for
Darwin me. Now joining us on the line is Edwin Joseph,
who's put his hand up. Good morning to you.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Edwin, Good morning Katie.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
Now Edwin, you've got six minutes to answer a series
of questions. Are you ready?

Speaker 2 (00:19):
All time? At best?

Speaker 1 (00:20):
All right, let's get started, Edwin? Why have you put
your hand up? To be me?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Kerry. I move to Darwin for a job with anti
government and I fell in love with the territory. Or
later I have changed jobs. Now I'm working for an
agency in third working from home. But whatever happens, I
don't intend to leave territory. This is my adopt at
home and I am passionate about serving the community and

(00:49):
making it better. So this is not my first time
running for local government. I already ran for local government
elections in twenty seventeen and twenty twenty one and I
ran for richardson Ward. And this time I feel that
after a lot of community works in Darwin, I thought
I am ready to take up the top job. I'm

(01:11):
also running for richardson Ward, so that's why I'm running
for Now the position.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Tell me what qualifications or work experience do you have
which you think make you the best place for this position.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Yeah, so very One of the important things of the
Council is to make right decisions that provide best deals
to the rate payers. So I'm qualified. I have got
a multidisciplinary education, including a doctoral degree that helps in
making sound policy decisions. So I have got testory qualifications

(01:47):
in it in business administration and human resources training and assessment, micration,
law and practice. So I'm a jack of all trades.
I also work for the Anti Government and Policy section,
and I have experienced working for private and public sectors.
I work for federal government, I work for anti government.

(02:10):
I used to work for the New Hotealth Department of Education.
I have done roles in education, HR, project management and research,
policy consultancy, etc. So all this combination or this combination
makes me a better person to work for the council.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Now, what do you see as being the most important
issues for council in Darwin.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
I'm hearing from people. The most important issue is in
anything we need to should be a genuine consultation. So
people have lost faith. Many of the people have lost
faith in the council. So lack of consultation is the
main issue, and the role of the council is to

(02:58):
provide basic services. Some people are a good number of
people are not happy with the tip fee, and there's
some people are saying that there are not enough shades,
trees are not enough and some people also reported in
some areas they reported about the issues with the darks neighbors,
dark walking and and some of the aggressive dogs. And

(03:21):
the safety is one of the issues. Even though it's
not directly related to the local government. Many of the
things are with the anti government and other things. So
safety is an issue. So it is also the role
of the council to work with the national and tertiary
governments to provide a better lifestyle to the people here.

(03:42):
And even they relate that to homelessness. So there are
so many issues in then here which I will work
on if I get elected Eden.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
What are your top three commitments to voters if you know,
if you are elected, I would.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Say, as I would repeat that, my my aim is,
like you know, the governance that based on the community needs.
So the number one will be genuine consultation as you
said earlier, So genuine consultation means it's not reaching many
people it's it's actually listening to them and I'm doing

(04:25):
what they want. That's one thing. Second thing is second
commitment would be transparency and accountability in financial management. So
that will that is based on like you know, so
some people are not happy about how things are done,
how tenders are are are released, and I'm not sure

(04:51):
about the details, but there is an artical news article
which I read that there is a there are two
options for Civic Center, but only one was released for
public consultation. I don't know about the complete details of that,
but you might go here. They're like you know, I
read on in the Independent that there are two options,
but one option was kind of hidden. So if I

(05:14):
was if i'm if I get elected, definitely there would
be full financial transparency. There would be my second commitment,
and that commitment will be based on a safety of
the people. So I'm seeing like you know, and even

(05:36):
though the safety is an anti government issue, but I
suggest doing the expanding the work of arranges to work
with the police. And there are other mechanisms we can
include to improve safety, like ccdvs and more lighting. Better
lighting would help avoid ter antisocial behavior. And there are

(05:57):
also maybe if I go for four you let me.
People are talking about affordable parking as well, so that
is important. Like you know, so I have when I
listened to people, many of the people said that they
have stopped going to city, especially when when they've implemented
that meters. I personally being like you know, I found

(06:18):
that the paste and other things are very easy for me,
but it is not for everyone. And some of the
seniors stopped going. They said they stopped going to city.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
We have the six minutes is run out. I'm afraid
we're trying to keep it fair for everybody. I do
want to just quickly ask you though, are you a
member of a political party or have you ever been?

Speaker 2 (06:42):
Yes, I used to work for a politician four years ago,
but that there's nothing to do with my with my
election or any of the community rules. I stopped working
for that because that didn't go well with in the
community rules.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Actually know, so are you? I would have said which
political party? Just to our listeners know, we have been,
like I said, we've been asking that of all the candidates.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
I used to be a member of Labor Party.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
Yeah, that's okay. Now in terms of your preferences, just
very quickly, who are you preferencing.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
I prefer independent candidates, so I prefer the Leah part
of the mayor and Andrew Johnath for the.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
What Well, that is all we've got time for Edwin Joseph.
Great to find out a little bit more about you
this morning. Thank you so very much for your time.
Thank you, thank you,
