Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's take a look at local football now and after
a long season that started back in April on a
club level, football wraps up this weekend. The National League
Finals are being held up in Auckland at North Harbor Stadium,
one Wellington team amongst the action. So let's bring in
our football correspondent Dale Warburton the one final look at
football this year and previewing the weekend's action Monitier Dale.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Yeah, gooday, hey Gun.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
Yeah, I'm good, thanks Dale, And we'll sort of have
a bit of a look back on the local scene
of twenty twenty four in terms of Central Leage and
all that a little bit later on. But let's look
at these two National League finals tomorrow and unfortunately none
of the Central League teams featuring in the men Dale
an all Auckland affairs sit down for our North Harboor
Stadium tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Yeah, Berginghead hosting Auklana Stey at four o'clock neat City
Rows were the only side from the Central Region who
had a chance, but they need results to go their way,
which did not happen, so they missed out. So it'd
be a pretty interesting game. They're Birkenhead, they're managed by
Paul Hobson. Theyre back in the National leagueraft missing out
last year. They've got a good balance of sort of
(01:05):
young and a more experienced players. But we kind of
stand out player there as Multi Patterson. He's had a
little bit of a professional experience, played a bit for
the Phoenix half the season or so, so he's the
kind of the one to lead the line for them Ugland,
so he kind of most lessons will recognize that name.
They've been around for a long period of time, managed
(01:27):
by abbot Riire Phoenix players himself. They've already won two
titles this year in the OBC Champions League in the
Northern League. We've got a host of call they names there,
my Bevan and Collie. Sort of their main goal threats
was sort of Dylan Manakin playing them behind him. He's
a national football player. But yeah, one perhaps one to
watch might be young talent Stripe who has scored a
(01:50):
lot of goals coming from from the beach. I think
he's a seventeen year old forward, so it could be
a pretty interesting game in Auckland won this one three
one back in September. But I think they I think
Bergnhead burnt out no person, so it could be a
bit of a close one there.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
Yeah, all right, and before then, I guess the match
that hinges on the Capitol region getting some success to
end off the year as the women's final at one
o'clock Waterside Carori with the trip up to face the
team that's been pretty dominant in the National League, Women's
Aukland United.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Yeah. Say, and have been pretty dominant last couple of years.
They've got a handful of a form of professional players.
Chloe Knot, Saskia vosper Page satch all played for the
Phoenix in one stage and they have had constants overseas
of various stages. Got a couple other standouts and a
Renee Walsh and Charlotte Roche. They finished the nationally with
(02:43):
eight wins. That draw that draw was against Waterside Crow
won one back in September. Yeah, so I've also got
a couple of players. I'm Kaylie Ward did play for
Warside Crow for the past few seasons, won the Golde
Book for them. She headed off to trial mid season
overseason and then came back and unfortunately Croy didn't have
a spot for them, so she picked up a spot
(03:04):
in Auckland. Aukland United was Corey. They were pipped by
the post by One United for the centrally, but have
imported a couple of Americans to help boast their national
legue chances and probably have probably per formed better than
I think most people would have predicted at the start
of the season. Jess Shelton's a bit of a rock
at the back of the defense, but we've got other
players like Emma star As an American and Toy Dagan,
(03:29):
she was in this Academy Offense academy set up before
spending some time in the Queens and State leagues. And
also Kendrick Pollock is another American. She scored seven goals
in the National League, so they'll be looking for her
to try overturn Auckland United dominance. But I think you
Aukland it will be favorites there, but also might back
themselves to try a bit of an upset.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Yeah great, one o'clock tomorrow afternoon and Dale, I guess
when you look back on twenty twenty four, at least
for the first part we saw more dominance from Wellington Olympic.
Probably a few people rise not to see them here
and the means National League final tomorrow. But overall, how
have you sort of assessed how how the local footballing
years played out?
Speaker 2 (04:09):
Yeah, I guess for Central League's who could stop one Sylympic,
I think was their third National Central League title in
a row. I guess for them they'll be billy disappointed
their kind of national league despite winning the Central the
Channem Cup, that their National league campaign sort of had
a few too many roadblocks in the way and they
couldn't get the three peat. I guess for everyone else,
(04:30):
it was kind of chasing for the centrally, wasn't it.
There's three or four teams vying for those last two spots.
You could see Western Suburbs bounced back from a pretty
four season the year before, and I'll see Napier and
Murram are always there or thereabouts. I guess towards the
bottom stop out struggled almost entirely throughout just the one win,
and they'll get relegated and spend a time regrouping back
(04:52):
in cap Prim. But I guess for Alan Bay, who
came up from the Cape Prim, they formed pretty well
and we're pretty comfortable staying up for another pre stoked
with that.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
Indeed, well, it all comes to a close tomorrow, so
we look forward to seeing how that pans out. Dale.
Really appreciate your time right through not just the winter months,
but the long, multi multi seasonal aspect of footballing that
is the local football scene. So thanks for being with
us each and every week here on the show. And
enjoy a bit of time of rest over the summer.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
Yeah, I'd have a little break and refresh the leagues
and the voice and come back hopefully strong mixing.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Looking forward to Dale, have a great break. Okay, nowhere
