Speaker 1 (00:00):
Twenty nine to a.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
So on the All Sport Breakfast, let's continue with our
club sport raps heading into another weekend, and football is
into the Chatham Cup semi finals this weekend, so let's
bring in Dale Warburton.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
For a preview.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Welling Dale now, good morning game and obviously a couple
of weeks left in the Central League. But of course
welling to the Olympic. Dale held to a pretty surprise
draw last week. Weren't they unable to lock away that
the Central League title for another year just yet?
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Yeah? I want to draw with upper hearts and fairly
tough conditions a record from last weekend. It was three
blowy on Saturday and Wakefield Park is probably one of
the most exposed ones to the southeast. I think both
teams struggled on that and I guess the Olympic still
have four points lead at at the top and should
you think claim a title next week? But they will
(00:47):
have to wait to see. I guess what happens after
their chim Cup game this weekend.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Indeed, yeah, it was certainly tough watching even on the
stream of that game to look at those cold conditions
out there last weekend, right and I'm sure they'll face
a little bit of warmer weather up in Auckland today
for the semi final. Let's start with well, the first
listed semi final anyway, Dale and it's Auckland University of
c taking on as a team that I'm sure are
very pleased to be here at this point.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
Nelson Suburbs FC.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Yeah, I think probing Jason Fines probably are very place
to see Nelton Suburbs in the semi finals. So I
think he played from them back in nineties that don't
want to age and too much, but it's my understanding anyway. Yeah,
Nelton Suburbs. Yeah, they're the fifth and the the Southern
League quite far a drift on the top. There're eleven
points behind and no real chance of a National leagu
qualification whatsoever. But a very surprised winners over Birkinghead in
(01:34):
the quarter finals. That game went to extra time after
it was locked at one to one. Truman Myers eventually
got the winner there, so they'll be stoked to get
into the semifinals. Auckland. Auckland, not of their third in
the Northern League, had a really big tough battle for
a National League Spot's pretty congested in that league at
the moment there's two points covering first to fourth. Melodotada
(01:58):
is the leading goal scorer who used to play down
in Willing and for quite a few years. He's got
evan goals for them the season, so who bet the
big target for them. They qualified in the courts from
the quarterfinals with the four to one over crish at
Unia which also required extra time and they scored twice
in the final ten minutes to take it extra time.
So pretty interesting game there. Another side have won the
(02:18):
Channel Cup and neither side have made the final either,
so one of those records are definitely going to be
broken after this one. You'd think probably Orchy Night will
be the favorites at home and perhaps in a slightly
better formed than Nelson Suburbs.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Yeah indeed and yeah at the very same time, and
so no team will have the advantage as to who
they possibly could be playing the following week, also at
two o'clock kickoff, also up in Auckland and as you
say Dale it's Wellington Olympic with the trip up there.
Looking to get past Eastern Suburbs to on the journey
to defend their title.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
Yes, could be a pretty pretty tight in tense game.
I thank you this one. Eastern Suburbs their fourth of
the National League. They've had a long history of the
Chamnel Cup. They're six time winners that put some second
in the all time list there, just behind Sich United
and University of Mount Wenington. Five of those have been
in the fifties and sixties, so they had a good
spot back then, but the last one was in twenty fifteen.
(03:09):
But they also runners up in twenty twenty two, so
they've got a bit of recent history there. Looking across
the squad, they have got a few names that stand out.
There a few players who have super been in and
around the Whites a little bit. Noah Been, Billinsley and
Colvin Kolu players sort of at the back and midfield,
and Noah Courdent who used to be at the Phoenix
reserves or academy side. A place for them too. They
(03:31):
got through the semifinals with to nor win over Sencibles
becaus to a couple of second half goals. Are pretty
comfortable with their for Olympic. Their first in the Central
League and it's just said just one point in their
final game two games to secure it and another title.
They're two time winners and defending champions, are looking to
go back to back. Only Kashmir Tech have done that
and since the turn of the century for Olympic they've
(03:54):
had a pretty tough run of the Central in the
Channean Cup. All four of their games previous to this
have been away from home, all against Central League opposition,
so they've got another away game this afternoon. They didn't
require ever time to beat Western Suburbs to get through
to the semifinals here, but yeah, it should be a
pretty tense tapaing game. Once surprised if it goes to
extra time.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Yeah all right, well two o'clock kick off for those
games obviously live streaming on FIFA Place and some results
through the afternoon here on ZIB as well.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
So appreciate your.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Time as always, Dale, and we'll be back chatting Central
League next weekend.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Yeah, look forward to then.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
The women's game. This weekend will see the semi finals
of the Kate Shepherd Cup, but also the continuation of
the Central League. Hannah Wignell back with us for a preview. Morning, Hannah,
good morning. Let's start with the Kate Shepherd Cup and
of course all eyes from a Wellington perspective as it
reaches semifinals this weekend. Hannah will be certainly on the
Phoenix women's reserves team. They're at home for this one,
(04:49):
which they'll be happy about taking on cash Med Tech
tomorrow afternoon.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
How do you see this one?
Speaker 2 (04:54):
They're playing up in the semi final of the semi
finals of the national competition.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
Yeah, I think this will be a really interesting in game.
The Phoenix Women's reserves bet Waterside colorI for to one
in early July to secure themselves a spot in the semifinal.
Kashmir Tech beat Otago Uni two to one in christ
Church in their quarterfinal. Kashmir Tech are an ambitious club.
They put a lot of effort into supporting the women's
(05:18):
side of the club. They are the only South Island
club and team are a women's National League license for twenty
twenty five. I've heard that this team have been in
really good form of late. They currently sit third in
the Women's South Island League on twenty seven points. They
had nine wins and four losses. Katie Harris is one
(05:38):
to watch for them, joint second on the league's Golden
Boot ladder. The Phoenix on the other hand. They'll be
looking to dominate this game, but we won't know what
kind of form they're in, and they may or may
not have the confidence of the Kashmir Tech side, who
have got nothing to lose and everything to gain. If
Kashmir Tech bring all they have, we could see history
made for this club. And I guess the only thing
(06:00):
I'll say is you can watch this game free on
FIFA Plus, so I'd tune in and watch it.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yeah, indeed, so yes, two o'clock tomorrow, and of course
they will know who their opponents are by the time
it kicks off, because five this evening is the other
semi final, Auckland United taking on the Eastern Suburbs and
an all Auckland Affairs. So yes, FEFA Plus. With all
that action, let's go to the Central League, Hannah. And
of course last weekend it was Wellington United lifting the
trophy for yet another season. And I guess before we
(06:26):
get into the fixtures, Hannah, it just shows, you know
that the dominance of that club continues to produce, doesn't it,
despite you know, some some personnel changes on and off
through the years.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
Yeah, totally.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
I mean they've you talk about clubs that have invested
in women's football and they've done it right from you know,
your youngest, youngest girls coming in right the way through,
and you know you can see that the Central League
and the premier team they're full of They're a young team,
but they're a young team that has success. Discipline is
(07:00):
core to that and an embedded playing style. But it's
it's massive and if they're really ambitious and have done
really well.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Yeah, congratulations. They're all involved and so yes, the Central
League continuing obviously some relegation battles to look out for it,
of course, our National League spots still to be played for.
Let's start off this afternoon at mid day Carlori Park.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
What a side could be taking you on Patoni.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
This is a huge game and it will help decide
he'll be the team from the Women's Central League to
qualify for the National League competition. Color are really strong
at home. However, if Patoni can get three points this weekend,
they'll leap leap frog Karori to a third place. Patoni
will be looking to win and get closer to qualifying
(07:44):
for the first ever taste of a woman's national league.
So they'll be bringing everything they've got to this game.
Teams can either crumble under this kind of pressure or
they can pull something magical off. Platoni have had an
up and down two weeks. They crumbled the United five
mil and then they reasserted their league against Palmston North
United four nil. They won't want to feel the pain
(08:04):
of such a heavy loss again. If I was a coach,
I'd be looking at their back line, focusing on the
necessary fixes ahead of this weekend's game. We know Batny
can score, but can they stop Claudy finding the back
of that a drawer would leave Colordi with a two
point advantage, but it's a tough but they have a
tough match still to play against the Phoenix Academy. I
(08:25):
would absolutely get down and watch this.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Game all right midday for that one.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
Then soon after that kicking off boyd Wilson Turf, not
too far away from Colaly Park will be University hosting
Miramar Rangers.
Speaker 4 (08:36):
Yeah, another big game. It was a huge win for
VIC last week three to two to them against Taradale.
The game was played at VIC and was a really
intense game. VIC with the lead going into the half
they were two nil up. Taradale clawed back to hold
the match at two to two until the eightieth minute,
when vic Unie's Georgia Gardner secured a goal and much
(08:59):
needed point.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
For the club.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
They're still bottom of the table, but they are now
just two points behind Motroa and a win this week
could see them jump off the bottom of the ladder.
Marmma know how to score, They're a tough team to
play against and they'll stay in the mix right until
the very end. I think this will be another really
good game to watch and vic Corby giving everything they've got.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Yeah, and of course Matodoa, Yeah, they'll be a bit
worried about this one, I would say for them this
afternoon because they traveled to Newtown Park to take on
the victorious Wellington United at two point thirty. You know,
how do you expect both teams to approach this game?
Obviously Wellington United have secured that trophy.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
Yeah, it's an interesting one. I mean that I was
thinking about this because the Diamonds, right, they've.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Won the league.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
They've got sixteen wins from sixteen games. It's a huge achievement.
They've got a new coach, Andre Andre coach VIC last year,
so he's used to kind of the up and downs
of a season normally, and so I wonder, and they've
got their their points, they've got their title, what are
(10:04):
they playing for? And there's a couple of games this
week where it really is about the discipline and not
taking your foot off the pedal just because external pressures
aren't there. So I don't think Andre will let them
take their foot off the pedal, and I hope he doesn't.
So I do think they will show up, more so
to a need a result. Their second from bottom and Vic,
(10:27):
as I've said, of creeping up behind them, they'll be
They'll have to find something from deep within and try
and get a point and hope they can. Hope United
don't show up, but I think they will.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Yeah, all right, two thirty for that one at Newtown
Park as well and at Fraser Park tomorrow it's a
levena and kick off. The Phoenix is under eighteen team
they're hosting Palmerston North Merist.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
Yeah, an interesting game to analyze on paper, Phoenix, you'd predict,
you'd predict that they'd take the win. You could argue
neither team have a huge driving force behind them for
this game. It won't affect their positions in the ladder
too much. So how each team performs will really show
us their character and their resolve. It'll give us a
(11:12):
taste of each team's discipline and whether they lose focus
when the spotlight is Ofesome. A little like with United,
this game will be about internal motivation and playing for
the love of the game. It could be a game
coaches want to try new tactics or give fringe players opportunities.
Either way, I'd be looking out for the players that
(11:33):
show up like it's a final and there's everything to
play for. Those are the players I'd want in the
squad for next year and the year after all Right.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
Yeah, interesting stuff and an interesting batch of games with
a lot riding on most of them across the weekend,
so I appreciate the preview head it. We'll see how
the results go. We'll touch base again next weekend. Appreciate
your time.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
