Speaker 2 (00:08):
Be right on half past seven Getting exciting at the
Rugby World Cup semi final, Black Fans is a comeback on.
They were training by twenty four points at the start
of the second half. Coupler tries the latest, a brilliant
one to Braxton Sorenson McGee down the right corner to
get New Zealand back in the mix. She was unable
to convert it spart the deficit now thirty one nineteen,
(00:31):
Canada in the lead with fourteen minutes of the game remaining,
but the White the Black Fans were down by twenty
four points thirty one seven heading into this second half,
so still much more needed in the fight back to
get New Zealand back in the game, but they're still
in it.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
For now.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Let's talk cricket because next month the Summer of cricket
is underway. The Chapel Hadley Trophy Series will see three
to twenties between the Black Caps and Australia up at
Bayoval and Mount Mongan Nouie back in the black Cats
T twenty teen is Wellington speeds to Ben Sears, who's
had another little injury niggle over the off season, but
he is back in the mix and in the squads
(01:11):
for alongside Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy and Zach Folks and
the fast bowling stocks. So let's chat to Ben willingtonon
Ben and I'm sure getting the chance to play Aussie
and a few matches here is an exciting one for you.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Oh yeah, yeah, absolutely, I'm super excited. Yeah, I think
the playing gets Australia is yeah, dreamed of anyone growing
up as a cricula in New Zealand. So yeah, yeah,
it's for Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
So the latest injury and I guess a reasonably long
list of injuries you've had in your career, Ben, is
the side straining you you've been battling. How's that recovery?
Sort of been ticked off?
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Oh you pretty fortunately, pretty common injury for a fast ballist.
So it's about three months ago now. Just worked close
closely with Chris Donaldson who's trainer at New Zealand Cricket
and he's outstanding and yeah, just just putt put a
(02:03):
lot of time benefort into that. Just going through the
details with the gym working stuff and the bowling loading
and yeah I've been pretty good.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Yeah great, and a better time up in the northern
hemis here, I know, a little bit of part of
the US, wasn't there. And then and a bit up
in the UK as well.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, So I went to Yorks some four
days and yeah that was that was an awesome experience
and got a chance to play with Joe Route and
Harry Brook in a game and the other Yorkshire Ed's
which was an amazing experience. And then went over to
the MLC which was really cool and yeah, unfortunately picked
(02:36):
up sidestrain there, but yeah, it was a great learning
experience and yeah great playing some cricket.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Wow, Joe wrote and Harry Brooke. It doesn't get much
better than company on the cricket field than that, Benn.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
No, it was. It was pretty incredible really just seeing
those guys in your slip cord and there was Adam
Life as well as open the benning for England and
Doug Milan and Johnny b still keeping behind stuff. So
yeah pretty crazy.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Yeah great, and and good news that you know, on
the back of that, the injury, the injury has come
right for now.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, feeling good and ready to go.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Yeah, wonderful. I guess when you look at injuries and
you look at you know, the pace bowling lineups you
know around New Zealand, and there's not many names that
you look at that that you can't really associate with having,
you know, disappointing injuries through their careers. Is it sort
of just just what you guys have to put up
with as pace bowlers, knowing that you know you are
going to be prone to more injuries than maybe others
(03:36):
on the field.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Yeah, it's certainly part of what you sign up for. Unfortunately,
like a behind cricket ball, trying to bowl as hard
as you can, not nobally natural action. So yeah, you
live with it, but yeah, wouldn't you wouldn't change it.
I wouldn't go to a game and yeah, not trying
to bull as hard as I can. But it's part
of what you get excited for, and yeah, you just
(03:59):
go live with the consequence of that time.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
And I'm sure over time you've worked out what to
do to your game to try and minimize the chances
of picking up the old leggle what have you kind
of just you know, tried to focus on in that regard.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Oh, my actual changed a little bit since the start
of my career, just trying to get straight of lines
down the wicket. I used to jump behind myself a
little bit. Now I jumped through with my back league. Yeah,
that's helped with the alignment, helped with a little bit
of pace, and then obviously, yeah, there's a strength and
conditioning that goes with it. We're just so lucky to
have Chris Donaldson as our trainer at New Zealand. He
(04:33):
was an Olympic sprinter. He's just hea'ts all over it
and he's just brilliant at what he does, and so yeah,
you put a lot of faith from that. And then yeah,
just bowling loading, just to make sure that you're managing
how many overs you're bowling and keeping those loads up
and try and keep them as consistent as possible so
you're not spiking up or down and that's what's been
known to lead to a high likelihood of injuries. But yeah,
(04:56):
it's a process and yeah, I'm enjoying it.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Yeah. Great. When you look at the Aussie line up,
I mean Glen Maxwell there in particular, I'm sure it's
a name that's seens some bowlers night bowlers into nightmares.
What are you sort of preparing in terms of specifically
targeting some of the top bossie guys come tight on
on a few weeks.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
Yeah, well it's it's the heck of the line up
and it's an intimidating line up to bowl you. But yeah, yeah,
you got you've got to be fixable with your plans.
You've got to have You've got you've got to be
ready to challenge them on multiple, multiple different shots. Make
sure they're not they don't know what's coming at all times,
because yeah, if you just settle into a length and
(05:34):
just try to beat them at one thing, yeah, they're
going to dominate you. So you've got to you've got
to mix it up. You've got to be ready for Yeah,
the new better is different plans and yeah, don't how.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Does be Oval usually serve you as a deck?
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Oh well it's it's quick and bouncy when I played
there in the past. So yeah, really excited, really looking
forward to that and yeah, we'll see how that goes.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
So obviously Adam Melnvillow raw Glock, thank you. Ferguson not here,
but you've got yourself alongside Jacob Duffy, Matt Henry and
Zach Folks. What do you feel you bring us a
point of difference to those three others to get the overs,
get the selection in the eleven.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
Well, yeah, look I'm trying to bring a bit of
extra pace, hit the wicket hard and yeah hight and bounce,
but yeah, I think it's a pretty balanced attack with
Dustin Folks, you're being able to swing it quite a
bit there as well, and yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
Brilliant And obviously you know it's all about the t
twenties at this point with the World Cup not far
away as for you, is that your focus being a
part of that next big ICC event?
Speaker 3 (06:41):
Well, look, that would be an awesome It would be
awesome to be involved in it. But it just got
Australia coming up, which is Chapel Handley here, so I'm
pretty focused on that at the moment. And yeah, just
go one game at a time, but yeah, really looking
forward to all these games and yeah, a long season.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Yeah, and you played a bit of rebel stuff as
he set up in the UK, is you know, get
another test to your name for the black Caps also
kind of just you know, in the back of your
mind long term? Is that something you want to sort
of work towards at some point?
Speaker 1 (07:08):
Oh yeah, well Test crickets for pinacle, like any of
all the guys bowing and this team's this current T
twenty team imagined would say exactly the same thing, like,
you want to be playing Test cricket, you want to
make yourself available for that, and yeah if I, if
I get the chance to be selected in another Test team,
it'd be absolutely fizz for Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Great, and your your long time Wellington team mate Michael
Bracewall with the captain's arm bands for this time. Looking
forward to working under him again.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
Oh yeah, absolutely, he's a great man. He's a heack
of a cricketer, so yeah, really looking forward to playing
with them.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Brilliant Ben, Hey were congratulations on the selection, mate, Looking
forward to seeing you in action up there at bay
Oval over the next few weeks and all the best
for the summer ahead, mate.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
