Speaker 1 (00:00):
He talks at Beebell Bowls as a popular sport for
many around the Wellington region each and every summer. Of course,
so as the finishing touches are made on the greens
and clubs for the new year, let's find out what's
in the works for the summer ahead Blake signal as
general manager of Bowls Wellington. He joins me now this morning,
morning to you, Blake, And I imagine though even though
it's technically been the off season, it's no doubt been
(00:22):
a pretty busy winter for all in the bowls world.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Yeah, it definitely is. Thanks for having me on, you know,
really really good to be able to come out and
talk to you about bowls. And yeah, the winter has
been extremely busy. We've been working in the background trying
to get some really good new events happening in the
Bowls Wellington calendar this year.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Great to hear, and I see one of them is
coming up very soon, Blake tomorrow. In fact, this ready
to roll Bowls events now pretty much an open invitation
to anyone listening, anyone around Wellington that wants to head
along to their local club and check out the sport.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Right definitely, Yeah, look we have a really really exciting
promotion which is how ready to Roll And we have
twelve clubs in the Wellington area opening up their doors
and their greens and then our community try the sport
of bowls. All you need to do is head along
to one of the closest clubs to you and get
ready to roll and have some fun on the greens.
(01:21):
This is open to all ages and we encourage you
to bring the family along, tell your friends and get
out and try and enjoy a new sport. All the
gear will be supplied, all the bulls will be there.
You just need some soft sold shoes or bear feet
and get stuck in. For more information on this, you
can hit to the Bowls Wellington website Bogswllington dot com
(01:43):
and you'll see a tab there Ready to Roll. Go
out there and find your local club and have a go.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
You're wonderful. We'll link that to our Facebook page All
Sports Breakfast Wellington as well blake this morning just so
people can check out the club nearest you. Anyone in
particularly sort of targeting with you know, wanting to get
into the sport of you mentioned families there or is
it just a real sort of white compass of different
types of people.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Look, I think we'd love to see more ladies playing
the game. We've had a little bit of a drop
off in the woman's side of a sport recently, and
we just want to encourage you know, it's a sport
that a whole family can play. You know, I've got
my own daughter that plays bowls, myself, my wife, So
it's something that everyone can get stuck into. So don't
(02:27):
feel inhibited by having children. You know, take your children
along and let them have a try at the club
because there's there's little bowls for them and there's yeah,
there's something for everyone in the family to have a
go at. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
Great. And just before we get into sort of looking
at some of the big fixtures on the calendar for
this year, how are those numbers going and looking at
this very moment of time before the season in terms
of you know, people on the books of bowls clubs
with competitions and other bits and pieces.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
Yeah, look, you know, I mean we're really excited in
the trend of social bowls at the moment. In Wellington,
you know, we had over fifty thousand social bowlers play
play some former bowls organized bowls over there. Over the
course of the last twelve months, you know, our club
level where we've still got about fourteen to fifteen hundred
(03:13):
members at clubs playing full time, so the numbers are
pretty much level in that regard that we are seeing
some real good growth in that and that social bowls
and it'd be great to see some of those players
try and take on a couple of other tournaments, you know,
and we're we're going to be looking at catering for
those players and shortening some forms of our game to
(03:34):
suit those guys to have a go all right.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
Looking at the callens of Blake. As you mentioned at
the start, an action packed summer ahead, a lot of
cool events happening within the Wellington region in terms of
bowls for the upcoming summer, and obviously no that will
be headlined by this big international events that the Wellington
region's playing hoster. But are Trans Tasman Bowls.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
Yeah mate, Look, you know International Bowls will be heading
back to the Capitol, you know this season, and you
know last year the Odds came over here and didn't
enjoy the wind a lot, but they were still able
to get out on top of the Trans Tasman Trophy.
I know that the players in the squads are determined
to not let them have it their way again this year.
(04:15):
Last year, Wellington we had four players playing the event,
including Simba mcgreekan who made his Tess deboo after the
pullout of Ali Forthy during the event. So look, I
dare say, I'd like to think there will be a
few Wellington players in the squad this year, So make
sure you get along to nine Eye. It's on the
(04:36):
first weekend of February, and there'll be some great bowls
to watch, some of the top bowlers from around the world.
You know you've got your your Aaron Wilson's, Shannon McElroy's.
I'm sure that these guys are going to be in
that in that team. There will be no Aaron Sheriff
this year after he's announced his retirement this week, but look,
you know there's still going to be some really great
(04:56):
players in that event, So make sure you head along
to Nine Ey Bowling Club to watch it in February.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
Wonderful first weekend of February. Locket in your calendars and
obviously blake. The summer will be filled with the usual
sort of into center and inter club events as well.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
Yeah, look, we're quite fortunate this year to be hosting
both the National Intercenter and National Interclub events in Wellington.
You know, last year the Wellington men's side were winners
of the inter Center for the second year in a row.
They're going to be looking at trying to make it
a three peat, which has only been done twice before
(05:32):
in the history of the inter Center. So that's going
to be played hosted at nine to E Bowling Club
and that's in mid March, and then a couple of
weeks later in early April, we're looking at having the
National Interclub Finals and that's going to be hosted at
Johnsonville Bowling Club. And yeah, look, we're really excited to
(05:52):
host these national events. There's going to be thatin the
players from around the country turn up for these events.
So it's really really exciting to see such good players
from around the country coming to Wellington and playing on
our greens.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
Wonderful to heir. How competitive is it with the other
regions Bake in terms of you know, wanting to secure
these these type of events for Wellington, Well, you know.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Everyone sort of puts in their their nominations for these
sort of events and yeah, there is quite a bit
of competition the inter Club and Into Center. They generally
like to try and hold it at a more centralized,
larger location, so your Auckland or christ Church that have
the capabilities for accommodation. But yeah, look it's it's it's
(06:37):
pretty prestigious to be able to get the Intero Center,
especially two years in our own in Wellington. So the
clubs are doing a really good job of being hospitable
to the people that are coming along and so make
sure you get out there and help out your local
club because they need to use plenty of them.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
On the ol Sport Breakfast and we are previewing the
season of Bowls ahead too, have Bowl Wellington at General Manager,
Blake Signal and Blake locally. I know there are always
new initiatives across the busy calendar, and I see there
are some development series in the works this summer as well.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Yeah, look, you know we've got a new in house
development series where what we're trying to do is create
the gap between the bridge, the gap between development players
and open players. So we have three of our high
performance coaches, Rachel Wyburn, Curtain, John Swift and Dale Jackson
who will be providing expert coaching to players and we're
(07:33):
also going to have a series of matches between between
these players, so there'll be twenty one men and twenty
one women the playing in house competition over the months
of November and December. So yeah, it's really quite exciting
and we're really looking forward to seeing how this series
develops and there may even be some more for junior
(07:56):
bowlers in the future.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
And in terms of that youth events overall, how's their
calendar looking? And I guess Para Bowls is another one
that has been a big focus for you guys.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
Yeah, look, I mean this year we're really excited to
introduce a Power Bowls Championship in Wellington and this is
the first time Bowls Willington has ever tried to hold
such a championship. I know a couple of other sentences
have tried to host something similar to this and we
thought it was about time that we did. We've had
(08:27):
the absolute legend Peter Horn who has been a big
part of driving this so big thanks to Peter for
all his help, along with Adrian Brown who's also done
a fair bit in this regard too. So we've got
the championship is going to be paid in the last
weekend in November this year, and what we want to
(08:49):
see is a few more entries. At the moment, we've
got about eight to ten entries in the singles and
about four entries in the pairs. So if you have
a parking permit or if you're not sure, if you've
got an ailment, give us a call or send me
an email at Bowls Wellington and so at Bowleswellington dot
com and let me know and we can and we
(09:10):
can see if you can actually be able to partake
in this event, because we want to try and get
as many people out on the green as possible. You know,
bowls is one of the few sports that's totally inclusive
and it's fantastic for those that want to stay active
in our communities. So do let us know about that.
In regards to other events, obviously we're hosting the national
(09:33):
under twenty one Kitty howk Singles this year again that's
going to be played over Easter this year. Bowls New
Zealands were very impressed with the way we ran the
Kitty Hooks event last season and they have sanctioned this
event as a national title this season. So Brady, our
youth coordinator. He has been paramount and making sure that
this event has just been getting stronger and stronger, and
(09:55):
it's absolutely fantastic that Bolds New Zealand have recognized us
as a national title now, So absolutely fantastic work to Brady.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
What about sort of age group events Blake, some sort
of over sixties, maybe some some other youth divisions as well.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Yeah, Look, we introduced our over sixties events last season,
so we had singles, peers and fours and they were
extremely popular, so we're really really happy to have them
carry on this year. And like I say, we've got
the Kitty Hawk National Under twenty one singles and we
also host an event for under twenty six later in
(10:36):
the year which has proved to be very very popular
and is a big selection event now for the national
under twenty six side. Brady has also been doing a
lot of work with use in the region and I
think it's worth mentioning that this calendar year Bolds Boll
Engine has worked. We're close to ten thousand tamariki and
(10:57):
rangatahi in the Lower North Island. Brady has just done
a wonderful job of setting this up this year and
schools can't get enough of bowls, believe it or not,
so that they're absolutely loving it and their students are
absolutely loving it. We'd love to do more in the
space next year also, so schools are interested, please email
(11:18):
myself at at Bowlslollington dot com and we'd love to
try and set up some more sessions for our young
ones to get.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Involved in and in the club locally. Blake, when is
that also a kicking to get.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
Yeah, Intero Club starts in a couple of weeks time,
so I think it's the nineteenth. We've got the serious
rounders into club, so yeah, look, it's going to be interesting.
We have had a couple of new teams come up.
We've got the news system now where we have two
teams promoted and two teams relegated. So we've got a
couple of new teams that will come up into the
(11:53):
Division one competition and the men and the ladies and yeah,
look at I think it's going to be a really
hot competition this year. We're going to be playing it
over seven weeks throughout the season and year. Look, I
think well that Carrot have been host of the National
Interclub Finals in April. You know, teams will really want
to go out there and Stampley Mark.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
That's great news. And speaking of our coverage through the summer,
Blake a bit of a changing of the guards for
the in terms of the way well who will be
hearing from bring us all the Bowls information through the summer.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
Yes, for sure. Look, I would just like to before
everything else, just a huge thank you to Dave Hewitt
who has given up so much of his time over
the last twenty plus years being the voice of Bowles
Wellington on the radio and sometimes on the screen for
the live streaming. So look, his informative comments and opinions
(12:46):
on our sport have become a huge reason why our
segment is so well listened to on your shows. So
it will be strange not to hear Dave's voice on
the radio on a sad day morning. But look, he's
done an absolutely fantastic job over those years and we
appreciate it. And now he can go out and just
concentrate on his Bowls on a Saturday morning instead of
(13:09):
instead of talking about it straight away. And we're very
lucky to have Jason Puddick come in to be the
new voice of Bowls. Jason has a huge background in
the sport, having played it for well over thirty years.
He is a current Bowls Wellington board member and current
Wellington Open selector. Jason will give a new insight to
the bowl season and I'm sure the audience will love
(13:31):
his thoughts and opinions over the course of the year,
so yeah, it's going to be interesting.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
Well echo everything you said about David Hewett Blake. He's
been a big part of our Saturday mornings here on
Newstalk Z'B as you said, for many many years, both
with myself the last few years and Jason Pine for
the decades before then. So yeah, we also here would
like to thank David for his brilliant reports and waking
up nice and early for us every Saturday morning through
the summer, and very excited to be chatting to Jason
(13:57):
as well from next week. Well Blake, plenty happening. Really
appreciate you filling us in on everything you've got on
the horizon for the summer ahead. It sounds like it's
going to be a great one for it for Bowls
in our region, so es hoping the weather plays ball
and we'll be cracking onto things very shortly.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
Thank you. Very much for having me mate.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
Cheers, Blake, thanks for the thorough run through of everything
going on the summer. Black Signal, general manager of Bowls
Wellington and our regular summer reports has mentioned. We'll resume
next Saturday morning from ten past seven and the usual
summer slot for balls here on the All Sport Breakfast.
