Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, yes, for one last time for the season, it's
time for our regular Bowls reports here on the Allsport Breakfast,
a bit of a look back on the year and
a recap of some of those champions for the last
couple of weeks. Jason Puddickson Studio, Montesia, Jason Morning Adam,
all right, well, we've been talking a lot about the
Champion of Champion events over the last few weeks, been
previewing a lot, and we can now finally report on

(00:20):
some winners.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Yeah, so last weekend we found another eleven champions, starting
with the singles and the women's we had a semi
final that had to be finished off with Victoria winning
that one over Tawa twenty one to thirteen. So in
the final we had Clear Hendra of Silver Stream up
against Helen King of Victoria and Clear running out the
winner there twenty one ten and it gives clear who
fourteenth center title. On the men's side, we had Ray

(00:43):
Martin and Victoria up against Steve Dipford from be Tony
Central and Victoria winning that one twenty one to fourteen,
giving Ray his seventh Center title.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
And the junior singles.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
We had Elizabeth from Whitby up against Carmela Ikeolano from
Island Bay and Liz Wins that won twenty one thirteen.
And on the men's junior singles were James McMillan from
Patoni Central beating Jordan Keen from Stakes Valley twenty one
to nineteen.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
Okay, fantastic, and we'll move up in the numbers and
go to the Pears.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
So in the Pears women's semi final nine I beating
Johnsonville eighteen fifteen, Patoni Central beating Tara twenty two ten.
So in the final we had nine O which was
Rosanna Merrowuay and Karen hewittt beating the Patoni Central team
of Debbie Hannah and Lorraine Hollow sixteen six. Then that
gives Rosanna hr sixth title and Karen whos second, Karen

(01:38):
second one for the season and Rosanna's third one for
the season.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
So good season for those two.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
And the men's in the semifinals States Valley beating Tar
was seventeen fourteen, Upper Hut beating t Tabay twenty three ten.
So in the final we had Stakes Valley with James,
Cameron Powell and Jordan Keen beating the Tony Hewitt and
Morris Picard from Upper Hut seventeen twelve, giving James Cameron
his second title in Jordan, his third title in a
couple of years. And in the mix pears as we

(02:05):
spoke last week in the semifinals, Hartthead defaulted to Whitby,
so Whitby already in the final. We also mentioned Nicky
and Corey Carroll last week being Nicky's first tournament this
has ever entered, unfortunately losing in that semi final to
Victoria thirteen twelve on an extra end, but a great
effort to.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
Get that far.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
It's all about the final.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
We had the Victoria team of Ben and Helen Keen
up against the Whipby team of Elizabeth and Simon Alis,
with the Victoria team running out winners nineteen seven. So
that gives Ben his fifteenth Wellington Center title in his
third gold Star, and Helen picks up her thirty fifth
Wellington title. Her seventh gold Star puts her one behind

(02:46):
Judy Howitt and so she'll be looking no doubt next
year to go and pick up another one. Go level,
maybe get two and be the highest winning woman's player
in Wellington Center.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Great awesome stuff, some great achievements. There, we're up to
the triples now.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
So in the women's triple semifinals we had nine I
beating Johnsonville twenty shots to seven, Island Bay beating Victoria
seventeen to nine. So in the final we had nine
I up against Island Bay with the nine oteam running
out close winners fourteen thirteen. That was the team of
Wendy Mackie, Kenny Critch Lowe and Tina Stare. Gives Wendy
her twelfth title, Kenny her eighth, and Tina picks up

(03:24):
her first title, which is great to see. In the
men's semifinal, Tarwa' beating Newtown twenty five nine nine I
beating Victoria nineteen eleven. So in the final from tarw
we had Gavin McLeod, Robin Johnston and Torry john beating
the strong nine oteam of Robbie Bird, Sam Allison and
Ross Thorne twenty one fourteen. That gives Gavin his second

(03:45):
title and Robin and Tory pick up their first title.
So great to see again.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Yeah, awesome, great congratulations as well. I'm glad I can
count because we're now up to the fours.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
So in the fours we were down to the final.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
On the women's side, the Stakes Valley team of Bertie Love,
Angelas Signal, Theresa Crowhurst and Shavannah Williams beating the nine
I team of Aliet de voulu Leone Goff and Robinson
in teen stare fifteen six. In that final, Birdie picks
up her fifth title so picks up her gold star.
Angela picks up her fifth title, gets a gold Star
as well, Thereesa's first title, so another one great to see,

(04:19):
and Shavanna picks up her second title and the men's
on the semi final nine I beating Kindala nineteen four.
Lyle Bay beat Hut fourteen eleven. So in the final
we had the nine I team of Robbie Bird, Sam
Allison and Jimmy Madden and Adrian O'Brien up against Lyle
Bay which was jim Maitland, pet Johnson, Simon Bennett and
Jamie Morgan and nine ozer run out winners fourteen to

(04:42):
six in that one, so Robbie picks up his ninth title,
Sam picks up his second title, Jimmy picks up his
fifteenth title, so another gold star there, and Adrian picking
up his second title.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Congratulations to all at nine nineteen. Brilliant stuff. Then I
guess that means he comes after the champion of champions
some civil war wards to acknowledge the high performers of
the year.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Yeah, So throughout the year and all the events we play,
we have women's and men's players of the year. They
pick up points through rep games and winning competitions and
semi finals and whatnot. So happy to say that women's
player of the Year was Rosanna Mirrorway from nine I
picking up three titles across the season. And Men's player
of the Year finmn Barmagogan from Stakes Valley. Of course,

(05:24):
he's had a pretty good season, picking up four titles
from the four events that he entered.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Also equally with we have.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
A champions women's club and a champion men's club. Again
points earned by their players across the season into club
and all those things. No real surprises here when we
just talked about who were the players of the year.
Nine are the women's club of the year and Staates
Valley are the men's club of the year.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
Great, yeah, congratulations to two of the hot clubs. And
we know Jason. The Bowls is a twelve month a
year sport. It's not just all the summer stuff, so
there's a fair bit on the horizon as well coming up.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
Yeah, so over the winter. While most of us locally
don't play a.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Lot of bowls or stuff at nine I, but all
our winners we've just spoken about in the Champion of
Champions excluding the Junior singles, will now go on and
represent Wellington in the National Championship Champion Finals, playing against
all the other winners from around the country. And of
course Jordan Keene won the champions Champs singles last year,
so it'd be great to see some more success for
Wellington players. But one of the big ones is an

(06:24):
actually overseas tournament coming up in a couple of weeks time.
It's Australian Open on the Gold Coast, which is just
a massive festival of bowls I guess you can call
it for a couple of weeks. It's a great place
to go and play bowls, by the way in the
middle of winter, and they have a number of.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
Events that this makes up.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
It's open singles, pairs, fours, mixed pairs, these under eighteen singles,
multi disability vision impaired singles and pairs and over sixties pairs,
So a massive event that caters to all ages across
their sport.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Again another massive benefit of the sport.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
It doesn't matter what age you are, you can go
out and play and be comparitive. So, like I said,
over two weeks it involves fifteen clubs, four thousand plus entry,
so this is the biggest bowls event in the world,
and people come from all over the world as well
to play in it.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
And I just picked out.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
Look in the men's single there's three hundred and thirty
four sections of four players, so we're looking at one
three hundred and thirty six players and that one event alone.
So to win that or even get deep into that competition,
you have to go a long way. You've got to
play good balls for a number of number of days
to even get close. And of course a lot of sports,

(07:38):
you need volunteers, eleven hundred volunteers to make this event
go ahead. But the real big one, I think three
hundred and fourteen thousand dollars in prize money, So I
think for well, I guess we consider an amateur sport, right,
we don't make a lot of money out of balls,
but there is some big money to be one on
the Gold Coast over the next few weeks.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
Yeah, that's worth your time for that one, doesn't it? Absolutely?

Speaker 3 (08:01):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (08:01):
Definitely Yeah, great stuff. And just when you look back
on the summer, Jason, what stood out to you on
the whole look?

Speaker 2 (08:07):
I had a quick look last night, and I think
for me, going through all these winners that we've had
this year, I'm.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
Reasonably sure I've got these numbers right.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
I might have to double check them, but I think
we're given out eight gold Stars this season, which for
my time in Bobs, I don't remember. I've given it
out eight and one season. And we've had seven first
time winners as well, which is great. I mean, I'm
lucky enough to win events myself, and you always remember
the first time right, and you enjoy it. And I'm
sure all those players that have won their first event

(08:39):
this year have loved it and they'll be coming back
next season a lot hungrier. Of course, our men's inter
center team winning three in a row, going for four
in a row, so they have equaled the record next
year histories in their lap. They go up to Auckland
and looking to I do a great job again, I guess,

(08:59):
and just be as Dom have been in the last
three years, and of course we talk about history. Finmbar
winning all four men's open events. Yeah, I mean, that's
a fantastic leafant Like I said, that's actually the only
four events that he entered as well.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
So Quie got record, isn't it quite incredible?

Speaker 1 (09:15):
Yeah? Brilliant And obviously the sport is done not just
the players that we acknowledge every week, and I know
you just want to say thanks to all those who
make the sport happen right through the summer.

Speaker 3 (09:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
Look, the sport doesn't happen without volunteers. So to all
our volunteers and our game, our tournament managers, our umpires,
everybody else involved in clubs that have helped made these
events go ahead, we thank you. Your support is great
and you know it doesn't happen without you. And of
course to yourself, Cops, Bucky, your team. The opportunity to

(09:50):
come in and speak about our sport has been fantastic.
It's been my first season, we'll call it, which has
been pretty cool. I've enjoyed it took me a little
while to get into it, but hopefully, you know, I'll
improve over time. And that's been quite interesting for me
when I go out and do my job and I'm
out and about and people say to me that I

(10:11):
know who join the radio and said that, you know
Vinnie up at Calviourn four square, who'll be listening this morning?

Speaker 3 (10:19):
Hi Vinnie.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
You know he gives me a bit of a hard
time about it. I got another mate, John that thinks
I should go into podcast.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
That's not going to happen.

Speaker 1 (10:28):
Don't leave us that soon, Jason. Been a season that's
not going to happen.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
But look, I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It's been great.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
Yeah, we've really appreciated it. And you've done a fantastic job.
And it always takes someone to give up their time
to get all the information and do it before you go. Jason.
We did get a text after last week's slot they said,
can you please ask Jason Puddock about his famous Champion
of Champion four's title in nineteen ninety nine when playing
for the High Title Club. Dennis texted that.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
Dennis, look, that was an interesting one.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
I'd gone to part the North three year, came back
went to High Title because one of my mates was
playing there and I went there to play bowls with
him and he actually I got there and he said,
I don't have any space for my fulls team, so
I grabbed a few members. Dennis used to be at
Stakes Valley with me at one stage as well. We
had another guy, Cameron Tooley who was a part time

(11:21):
bowler didn't play a lot of balls, and another another
player from the club, and so we I don't know,
I guess we didn't have any expectations. We won the
club stuff, we go to the Champion Champs. We work
our way through to the final. Somehow Cameron couldn't be

(11:42):
at the semifinal even though he played the quarter final
in the morning, so we had to get a replacement
for the semi final and final, and then we got
to the final, we were in trouble. We sort of
had a chat halfway through and said, look, we're just
if we're going to give usself a chance, we gon'd
to have to get our a into gear right, and
we managed to get ourselves into a winning position and

(12:02):
ended up winning the title. Now, for those three players
that I had in my team, that was the first
ever title and it was a great experience, and I
think again Champion Champs does from time to time throughout
those combinations that you wouldn't expect, but it was thoroughly enjoyable.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
There you go, Dennis, the question has been answered. So
thanks Jase. We really appreciate it. And it's not just
the five ten minutes here. You're on the show every week.
You spend a lot of time getting the slot ready
and making sure the Bowls community get the word out
to everyone else in our wider audience too, So I
really want to thank you for all your time through
the summer, and hopefully we'll see you back in a
few months.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
No doubt you will.
