After a handful of injuries in the Central Pulse shooting circle in the ANZ Premiership, 20-year-old Martina Salmon earned a surprise callup to the team having originally signed on to play a grade below for the Manawa this year.

Salmon has helped the Pulse remain competitive through their injury crisis, shooting at a nearly 90 percent success rate, helping the Pulse to second on the competition ladder.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's great to have your company here on the Illsport
Breakfast on news Talks. They'd be with a Central Polese
still second in the A and Z Knitball Premiership now
their next game is down south and in the Cargo
Monday night against the bottom placed Southern Steel. But in
terms of all the injuries the team has faced, what
a season we are seeing from goal shoot Martina sam
And originally signed on to come back to netball and

(00:21):
play for the Munawe team in the grade below this year,
but obviously with a whole raft of injuries in the
shooting circle the Pulse has had this season, Martina was
pretty much called on to well take the lead in
the shooting circle. She's had nine games now in the
goal shoot position and has been performing incredibly strong and
many giving her a lot of credit for the way
the Pols have been playing this year. We're lucky enough

(00:42):
to be joined by Martina. Now, thanks to your time, Martina,
good morning and well, how delighted are you with how
the season's gone so far?

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Yeah, no, it's been a great season so far. I
didn't think i'd be where I'm at now, but yeah,
just grateful for the opportunities I've had the last couple
of months, and yeah, just enjoying great.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Net For tell us where things were for you at
the very start of the year. I know you'd had
a break from from netball just and you were you
were coming back and to join the monow a team
right in the grade below.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Yep, so I was playing in the in and our team,
so started off the season with them, also just trend
with them throughout the pre season, so yeah, that was good.
And then yeah, I played like four or five games
with them and then ended up signing a full contract
with the Pulse, so it wasn't with them for too long.
But yeah, it was a great time with the In

(01:33):
and our team. Really loved my time with them.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
And it was a tough well pre season for the Pulse,
but also through the season obviously losing a whole bunch
of key players, but particularly in the shooting circle. So
I mean, tell us your feelings that you had to
sort of you're forced into making this stuff up really
pretty fast.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Yeah, I feel like I honestly have been waiting for
this moment for a very long time, just to be
able to step up into the am Z level. I
feel like, you know, I belong in this team, and
I belonged this position. Like sometimes I kind of doubt
myself and think of, you know, am I do I
belong where I'm at now? But I think just trusting
in myself that I have been blessed with the skift

(02:10):
to play netball, And yeah, I think I've slaughtered them
very well with this team. They've brought me in very nicely,
and they're so welcoming. They in quide me and everything.
So yeah, I just love how they make it such
a safe environment for me and like just at trainings
and stuff, not afraid to ask a new questions like, yeah,

(02:31):
they're just really cool to yeah, help me out. So yeah, No,
it's great.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
You had a break from nitball last year.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
What was the reason you decided to take some time
away and how different are you sort of coming back
now from a bit of time out.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Yeah, I it was more of just like a mental
health kind of thing. I think I was just struggling
a little bit off court, so I just needed some
time to kind of just focus on myself. And I'm
honestly so happy that I did take that year off.
I feel like a really built me to the person
that I am today and I think it's definitely gonna

(03:05):
help me in the future. I learned so much more
about myself and I feel like growing up playing Network,
it was just like playing network at such a young age,
it was just always netball, netball, netbak And you know,
knowing now that I have a life outside of network,
there's so much more to life than Netfax. So just
knowing that now to put myself first and to make

(03:25):
sure that my mental health is is is good first
before before everything else was good on court, So yeah,
I think just making sure that my mental health yeah,
is great, and then everything else will come.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Yeah, fantastic.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
And there must be a lot of mental work and
mental skills work for being a shooter as well of
those high pressure situations and the reliance the team has
on it.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
Yeah, yeah, I think. Yeah. I actually had a conversation
with someone this morning about shooters just I believe that
shooters are the most pressured the should on court. So yeah,
I think I think I've been built for this for
this position though that I love the pressure, like it's yeah,
it's a challenge, but yeah, no, it's great. I obviously

(04:12):
loved shooting, so yeah, I love it.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
With everything that's happened with the netball journey this year,
how have you managed to just take some take some
time to set some goals and and keep things tracking.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
Well.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Have you been able to sort of, you know, set
some aims for you for yourself through the season.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Yeah, Well, my biggest goal for this year was just
to like enjoy netbre and to not put too much
high expectations on myself. But I'm here now playing in
the AMZ team. I'm pretty much starting most games too,
So yeah, I didn't think i'd be where I'm at now,
but yeah, just I'm honestly just very very grateful for

(04:48):
the opportunities that pols have given me. And to be
where I'm at now, I think, yeah, it's just great.
I'm just living my best life.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
Yeah it seems like and I mean anyone watching you
on court will know that.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
So shooting about eight percent through the season so far,
is that a figure you're happy with?

Speaker 2 (05:05):
Yeah, Yeah, definitely happy with it. Another thing for my
stuff is I put this high. I tell myself that
I want to be shooting at a high volume, but
I just need to tell myself that, you know, I've
just come into an a and Z team and mid
through season, so to not put too many high high
expectations on myself and just to enjoy that ball and

(05:25):
just play it and yeah, don't put too much pressure
on myself.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
Tell us about the rivalry that's building between the Pulse
and the Tactics this year. You know, both teams at
the top of the table. You've both won one each
this year. The Tactics snatched that one an extra time
just a couple of weeks ago. Absolutely, now, I mean
this is a real cool rivalry, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Yeah, Yeah, no, it's great. I don't think I've actually
ever been in a competition with a team like Tactics
like that's so close to us, like on the table.
So yeah, there are great team. For credits to them,
They've got such a great team like all throughout the court.
So yeah, I think it's just so important for us
to keep our composure and to keep doing what we

(06:05):
do best and to not yeah, to not black anywhere
on court. So yeah, I think I think this is good.
I think it's all part of sports to you know,
have these like challenges with other teams. So yeah, I
think it's going to help us. It's going to build
us stronger.

Speaker 1 (06:19):
So yeah, and the Steel down South in this round
coming up on Monday night. I mean, the Steel obviously
aren't having the greatest run as a team, but that
trip downs when the Cargill always seems to be a
pretty tricky one.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
Yeah. Yeah, I had my first game against them a
couple of weeks ago, and yeah, I actually made my
debut with them earlier on in the season. So yeah,
I think I love the Steel team. They're such great
girls and the management they're awesome. But it is an
easy playing down there. I think when I actually had

(06:53):
played that game, I was just a bit like, wow, okay,
this crowd, you know, they're definitely coming for us. But yeah,
I think I think it's just great. I think it's
just good to appreciate those moments and to just be
in the moment and enjoying that for so yeah, I'm
really excited for that game. It's going to be a
good one, not going to take them easy.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
So yeah, yeah, brilliant and just overall, Martina for yourself
individually but also as a team. How proud is everyone
have just you know the way that the Pulse have
just moved on from all the adversity, all the injuries
this year and under a new coach performing incredibly well.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Is there a genuinely good buzzer out?

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Oh yeah, definitely. And our management. Our coaches believe in us,
so I think just having their support and their confidence
and us has really just helped us all to be
performing the best nivel that we have been performing. So yeah,
I think we honestly have way more to give. So
we've got four more games left, but yeah, I think

(07:48):
you know this is our time to really dig in
and finish this season on a high.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Yeah, wonderful.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Well, I know there's a lot of support behind the
Pulse to do that and fingers crossed you can. Martina
congratch relations again on the season so far. Ready, appreciate
your time this morning here on the All Sport Breakfast.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Awesome, thanks so much for that.
